Appointment of apostolic nuncio in Albania

The Holy Father has appointed His Excellency Msgr. Charles John Brown, titular archbishop of Aquileia and currently apostolic nuncio in Ireland, as apostolic nuncio in Albania.

 

Appointment of bishop of Plasencia, Spain

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Plasencia, Spain, Rev. Fr. José Luis Retana Gozalo, currently diocesan delegate for the teaching institutions of the diocese of Ávila, and parish priest.

Rev. Fr. José Luis Retana Gozalo

Rev. Fr. José Luis Retana Gozalo was born in Pedro Bernardo, diocese of Ávila, on 12 March 1953. He studied philosophy and theology in the seminary of Ávila in Salamanca. He was ordained a priest in Pedro Bernardo on 29 September 1979. He studied for two years at the Faculty of Theology of Fribourg, Switzerland. He pursued courses in geography and history at the National University of Distance Learning, and obtained a licentiate in theology from the University of Salamanca, where he also undertook doctorate level courses. He has published several books on historical themes.

He has held the following offices: formator and professor of the La Asunción diocesan college of Ávila (1979-1993 and 2003-2012); rector of the seminary of Ávila in Salamanca (1993-1999); episcopal vicar and special secretary to the bishop (1998-2005); and canon of the Cathedral of Ávila (since 2002). He is currently episcopal delegate for the diocesan teaching institutions, pastor of the “San Pedro Bautista” parish (since 2012), and head of the Cathedral Chapter (since 2015).
