Confirmation of the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference until the appointment of the new president on the occasion of the General Assembly (22-25 May 2017)

The Holy Father has confirmed His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, archbishop of Genoa, as president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, until the appointment of the new president on the occasion of the General Assembly to be held from 22 to 25 May 2017.

 

Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Paraíba, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Manoel Delson Pedreira da Cruz, O.F.M. Cap., as metropolitan archbishop of the archdiocese of Paraíba, Brazil, transferring him from the diocese of Campina Grande.

Msgr. Manoel Delson Pedreira da Cruz, O.F.M. Cap., was born on 10 July 1954 in Biritinga, archdiocese of Feira de Santana, in the state of Bahia. He gave his religious vows in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin on 17 January 1978, and was ordained a priest on 5 July 1980.

He studied philosophy in Nova Veneza, São Paulo, and theology at the Institute of Theology of the University of São Salvador da Bahia. He obtained a degree in classical letters from the Catholic University of São Salvador da Bahia, and a licentiate in social communications sciences from the Pontifical Salesian University, Rome.

Within his Order he has held the offices of formator, Provincial Minister (several times), and Definitor General for Latin America.

On 5 July 2006 he was appointed bishop of Caicó and received episcopal ordination on 24 September of the same year. On 8 August 2012 he was transferred to the diocese of Campina Grande.

He is currently vice president of the Nordeste 2 Regional Episcopal Conference, which encompasses the states of Alagoas, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte.

 

Appointment of auxiliary of Belo Horizonte, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Fr. Vicente de Paula Ferreira, C.SS.R., as auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, assigning him the titular see of Castra Nova. Fr. Ferreira is currently formator of students of theology of the Redemptorist Province of Belo Horizonte.

Rev. Fr. Vicente de Paula Ferreira, C.SS.R.

Fr. Vicente de Paula Ferreira, C.SS.R., was born on 27 October 1970 in Ararai, district of the municipality of Alegre, diocese of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, in the State of Espírito Santo.

He studied philosophy the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (1986-1990), where he later obtained a licentiate (2009-2011) and degree (2011-2013) in science of religion. He studied theology at the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology (FAJE) in Belo Horizonte (1993-1996) and specialised in psychology at Juiz de Fora (2003-2006).

He gave his religious vows as a Redemptorist on 12 December 1992, and was ordained a priest on 16 November 1996. Within his congregation he has held the following offices: vocational promoter (1997); formator for the pre-novitiate (1998-2002) and the aspirancy (2003-2005); president of the Union of Redemptorists of Brazil (2005-2011); Provincial Superior of the Province of Rio de Janeiro-Minas Gerais- Espírito Santo for three consecutive mandates (2005-2014); member of the Alphonsian Academy of Rome (since 2012).

He is currently formator of students of theology of the Redemptorist Congregation (Province of Rio) in Belo Horizonte.

 

Appointment of auxiliary of Washington, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Fr. Roy Edward Campbell as auxiliary bishop of Washington, U.S.A. Rev. Fr. Campbell, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, is currently pastor of the “Saint Joseph Parish” in Largo, assigning him the titular see of Ucres.

Rev. Fr. Roy Edward Campbell

Rev. Fr. Roy Edward Campbell was born on 19 November 1947 in Pomonkey, Maryland, in the archdiocese of Washington. After attending the Archbishop Carrol High School in Washington (1961-1965), he obtained a bachelor’s degree in zoology, anthropology and chemistry from the Howard University of Washington (1965-1969) and a diploma in banking management from the University of Virginia in Arlington (1990-1992). For several years he worked in the banking sector, becoming vice-president and project manager of the Bank of America. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the then-Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston in Massachusetts (2003-2007).

He was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Washington on 26 May 2007.

Since priestly ordination he has held the following offices: vicar of the “Saint Augustine Parish” and pro tempore administrator of the “Immaculate Conception Parish” in Washington (2007-2008); pastor of the “Our Lady of Assumption Parish” in Washington (2008-2010) and the “Saint Joseph Parish” in Largo (since 2010); member of the Archdiocesan Synod Implementation Committee, the Archdiocesan Formation Board (2010-2014), and the Clergy Personnel Board (2010); vicar forane of Middle Prince George’s County (2015) and the Executive Committee of the Priest Council (since 2016).

 

Appointment of member of the Congregation for Bishops

The Pope has appointed Msgr. Giacinto Berloco, titular archbishop of Fidene, apostolic nuncio, as member of the Congregation for Bishops.
