The Holy Father has:

- given his assent to the election, by the Synod of Bishops of the Major Archiepiscopal Syro-Malabar Church, of Fr. Thomas (Tomy) Tharayil as auxiliary of the archieparchy of Changanacherry (area 8,450, population 9,467,100, Catholics 396,500, priests 762, religious 642, women religious 3,320), India. The bishop-elect was born in Changanacherry in 1972 and was ordained a priest in 2000. He studied in the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, and holds a doctorate in psychology from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome. After ordination he served as secretary of Archbishop Joseph Powathil, deputy priest of various parishes, and professor in a number of seminaries and institutes. He is currently director of the Danahalaya Institute of Formation.
