Le religioni del mondo firmano la Rome Call

Il 9 e 10 luglio 2024 si terrà a Hiroshima, in Giappone, uno storico evento multireligioso. Intitolato AI Ethics for Peace: World Religions commit to the Rome Call (Etica dell’AI per la pace: Le religioni del mondo si impegnano per l'appello di Roma). L’evento ha un profondo significato perché si svolge a Hiroshima, città che come nessun’altra testimonia le conseguenze di una tecnologia distruttiva e della duratura ricerca della pace. In questo luogo simbolico, i leader delle principali religioni mondiali si riuniranno per firmare la Rome Call for AI Ethics, sottolineando l'importanza vitale di guidare lo sviluppo dell'intelligenza artificiale con principi etici per garantire che sia al servizio del bene dell'umanità.
L'evento è promosso dalla Pontificia Accademia della Vita, da Religions for Peace Japan, dall'Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace degli Emirati Arabi Uniti e dalla Commissione per le relazioni interreligiose del Gran Rabbinato di Israele.
LE PREMESSE
La Rome Call for AI Ethics è stata ideata dalla Pontificia Accademia per la Vita e promossa dalla Fondazione RenAIssance con l'obiettivo di promuovere l'algoretica, ovvero lo sviluppo etico dell'Intelligenza Artificiale.
La prima firma di questo “Appello per l’etica dell’intelligenza artificiale” è avvenuta a Roma il 28 febbraio 2020, con la sua sottoscrizione da parte della Pontificia Accademia per la Vita, di Microsoft, di IBM, dell'Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l'Alimentazione e l'Agricoltura (FAO) e del Governo italiano, alla presenza del Presidente del Parlamento Europeo.
Il documento promuove un approccio etico all'Intelligenza Artificiale (AI) e un senso di responsabilità condivisa tra organizzazioni, governi, big tech e istituzioni, al fine di dare forma a un futuro in cui l'innovazione digitale e il progresso tecnologico siano al servizio dell'ingegno e della creatività umana, preservando e rispettando al tempo stesso la dignità di ogni singolo individuo e del nostro pianeta.
Dopo la firma della Rome Call, nel 2023, da parte dei leader delle tre religioni abramitiche (cristianesimo, islam ed ebraismo) in nome della coesistenza pacifica e dei valori condivisi, l'evento di Hiroshima rafforza l'idea che un approccio multireligioso a questioni vitali come l'etica dell'AI sia la strada da seguire.
Le religioni svolgono un ruolo cruciale nel plasmare un mondo in cui il concetto di sviluppo proceda di pari passo con la tutela della dignità di ogni singolo essere umano e la salvaguardia del pianeta, la nostra casa comune. Unirsi per chiedere lo sviluppo di un'etica dell'AI è un passo che tutte le tradizioni religiose devono compiere insieme.
PROGRAMMA DELL'EVENTO
L'evento, organizzato in collaborazione con Religions for Peace Japan, il Forum per la Pace di Abu Dhabi e il Gran Rabbinato di Israele, si svolgerà in due giorni.
Il 9 luglio 2024, presso l’International Conference Center di Hiroshima, l’evento avrà inizio con i discorsi del Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu, Presidente di Religions for Peace Japan, di S.E. Mons. Vincenzo Paglia, Presidente della Pontificia Accademia per la Vita, di S.E. Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, Presidente del Forum per la Pace di Abu Dhabi e Presidente del Consiglio Fatwa degli Emirati Arabi Uniti, e del Rabbino Eliezer Simha Weisz, Membro della Commissione per le Relazioni Interreligiose del Gran Rabbinato di Israele. Quindi Padre Paolo Benanti, Professore di Etica della Tecnologia presso la Pontificia Università Gregoriana, presenterà l'Addendum di Hiroshima sull'AI generativa, che diventerà parte integrante della Rome Call for AI Ethics.
Nel corso della prima giornata si terranno tre sessioni.
La prima, dedicata a “Prospettiva scientifica: rischi e opportunità dell'Intelligenza Artificiale”, vedrà la Prof.ssa Lisa Schirch, PhD, Richard G. Starmann, Sr. Professor of the Practice of Peace Studies - University of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, il Dr. Prof. Jeremy Wertheimer, Broad Institute di Harvard e MIT, membro del Consiglio accademico della Yeshiva University, e il Prof. Mario Rasetti, Professore Emerito di Fisica Teorica presso il Politecnico di Torino - Istituto CENTAI, presentare le loro scoperte e riflessioni.
La seconda, incentrata su “Prospettiva tecnologica - Applicazioni pratiche di un'AI etica”, conterà sui contributi di Brad Smith, Presidente di Microsoft, Dario Gil, IBM Senior Vice President e direttore della ricerca, e Dave West, Senior Vice President e Presidente Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China di Cisco.
La terza, dedicata a “Governance dell'intelligenza artificiale”, vedrà la partecipazione di Amandeep Singh Gill, inviato del Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite per la tecnologia, Jimena Sofia Viveros Alvarez, capo dello staff e consulente legale del giudice Loretta Ortiz presso la Corte Suprema messicana, ed Eriko Hibi, direttore dell'Ufficio di collegamento della FAO in Giappone.
Dopo queste sessioni tecniche, una sessione aperta sarà dedicata al contributo di esperti di diverse religioni mondiali, moderata dal dottor Russell Rook, della Good Faith Partnership.
La seconda giornata, il 10 luglio, è dedicata alla celebrazione della firma della Rome Call da parte dei leader delle religioni mondiali e si svolgerà presso l’International Conference Center Hiroshima “Dahlia”.
Dopo la testimonianza di un sopravvissuto alla bomba atomica, i partecipanti si recheranno a piedi al Parco della Memoria, visiteranno il cenotafio e deporranno corone di fiori in memoria delle vittime; proseguiranno quindi verso il luogo della cerimonia, passando per la Luce della Pace e la Statua dei Bambini della Bomba Atomica.
Un intermezzo musicale, proposto dal quartetto di flauti della "Elisabeth University of Music" (città di Hiroshima), introdurrà infine la cerimonia della firma della Rome Call, nella quale un membro di ciascuna religione mondiale farà una breve dichiarazione.

AI Ethics for Peace: World Religions commit to the Rome Call
Hiroshima, Japan – July 9-10, 2024
An historic multi-faith event will take place in Hiroshima, Japan, on July 9th and 10th, 2024. Titled AI Ethics for Peace: World Religions commit to the Rome Call. This event holds profound significance as it convenes in Hiroshima, a city that stands as a powerful testament to the consequences of destructive technology and the enduring quest for peace. In this symbolic location, leaders of major world religions will gather to sign the Rome Call for AI Ethics, emphasizing the vital importance of guiding the development of artificial intelligence with ethical principles to ensure it serves the good of humanity.
The event is promoted by the Pontifical Academy of Life, Religions for Peace Japan, the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s Commission for Interfaith Relations.
BACKGROUND
The Rome Call for AI Ethics was issued by the Pontifical Academy for Life and furthered by the RenAIssance Foundation in an effort to promote algorethics, i.e. an ethical development of artificial intelligence.
On February 28th, 2020, the Pontifical Academy for Life, together with Microsoft, IBM, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Italian Government – and in the presence of the President of the EU Parliament – signed this “Call for AI Ethics” in Rome.
The document aims to foster an ethical approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to promote a sense of responsibility among organizations, governments, multinational technology companies, and institutions, in order to shape a future in which digital innovation and technological progress serve human genius and creativity, while preserving and respecting the dignity of each and every individual, as well as our planet’s.
Following the signing of the Rome Call by leaders of the three Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) in 2023, in the name of peaceful coexistence and shared values, the Hiroshima event reinforces the view that a multi-religious approach to vital questions such as AI ethics is the path to follow.
Religions play a crucial role in shaping a world in which the concept of development proceeds hand in hand with protecting the dignity of each individual human being and preserving the planet, our common home. Coming together to call for the development of an AI ethic is a step that all religious traditions must take.
EVENT PROGRAM
The event, co-organized with Religions for Peace Japan, the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, will take place over two days.
On July 9th, 2024, at the International Conference Center Hiroshima, the event will open with speeches by Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu, Chairperson of Religions for Peace Japan, H.E. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, H.E. Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, President of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, and Chair of the Emirates Fatwa Council, UAE, and Rabbi Eliezer Simha Weisz, Member of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s Commission for Interreligious Relations. Father Paolo Benanti, Professor of Ethics of Technology at the Pontifical Gregorian University will then present the Hiroshima Addendum on generative AI, which will become an integral part of the Rome Call for AI Ethics.
Three sessions will be held throughout this first day.
The first, dedicated to Scientific perspective: risks and opportunities of Artificial Intelligence will see Prof. Lisa Schirch, PhD, Richard G. Starmann, Sr. Professor of the Practice of Peace Studies - University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, Dr. Prof. Jeremy Wertheimer, Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, Member of Academic Board of Yeshiva University, and Prof. Mario Rasetti, Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at the Politecnico di Torino – CENTAI Institute present their findings and reflections.
The second, focused on Technological perspective – Practical applications of an Ethical AI, will count on the contributions of Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, Dario Gil, IBM Senior Vice President and Director of Research, and Dave West, Senior Vice President and President of Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China of Cisco.
The third, exploring The Governance of Artificial Intelligence, will count on Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology, Jimena Sofia Viveros Alvarez, Chief of Staff and Head Legal Advisor to Justice Loretta Ortiz at the Mexican Supreme Court, and Eriko Hibi, Director of the FAO Liaison Office in Japan.
After these technical sessions, an open session will be dedicated to the contribution of experts from different world religions, moderated by Dr. Russell Rook, of the Good Faith Partnership.
The second day, July 10th, is dedicated to celebrating the signing of the Rome Call by leaders of the World Religions, and will take place at the International Conference Center Hiroshima “Dahlia”.
Following the testimony of a survivor of the atomic bomb, participants will walk to the Memorial Park, visit the cenotaph, and lay wreaths in memory of the victims; they will then proceed to the Ceremony Site, via the Peace Light and the Statue of the Children of the Atomic Bomb.
A musical interlude, offered by the Flutes’ quartet of ‘Elisabeth University of Music’ (Hiroshima City) introduces the Rome Call’s signature ceremony, where one member of each World Religion will make a brief declaration.
