La nona Congregazione Generale dei Cardinali, questa mattina, ha avuto inizio alle ore 9:00, con un momento di preghiera comune. Erano presenti 177 cardinali, di cui 127 elettori.

In apertura, sono stati sorteggiati i cardinali della Commissione che assiste il camerlengo nelle congregazioni particolari per il disbrigo degli affari ordinari: si tratta del Cardinale Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., e del Cardinale Marcello Semeraro, mentre resta confermato il Cardinale Reinhard Marx in quanto coordinatore del Consiglio per l’Economia.

La sessione si è articolata in 26 interventi, che hanno toccato diversi temi di rilevanza ecclesiale e pastorale. Si è riflettuto sul duplice compito della Chiesa: vivere e testimoniare la comunione al proprio interno, e promuovere la fraternità nel mondo. È stato ricordato con gratitudine il magistero di Papa Francesco e i processi avviati sotto il suo pontificato, sottolineando la responsabilità di proseguirli e custodirli.

Tra i temi emersi, la collaborazione e la solidarietà tra le Chiese locali, il ruolo della Curia in relazione al Papa, il servizio della Chiesa e del Pontefice alla causa della pace, e il valore dell’educazione come strumento di trasformazione e speranza. Non sono mancati riferimenti al Giubileo e al desiderio che il prossimo Papa abbia uno spirito profetico, capace di guidare una Chiesa che non si richiuda su sé stessa, ma sappia uscire e portare luce a un mondo segnato da disperazione.

Sono stati ripresi anche alcuni temi già affrontati nei giorni precedenti, come la sinodalità e la collegialità, e si è posto lo sguardo sul mondo e sull’attenzione che questo rivolge alla Chiesa. È emersa la consapevolezza del rischio che la Chiesa diventi autoreferenziale e perda la sua rilevanza se non vive nel mondo e con il mondo. Importanti anche i richiami al dialogo ecumenico e alla missione.

È stato comunicato che le sessioni di lunedì si terranno al mattino, dalle 9 alle 12.30 circa e nel pomeriggio, dalle 17:00 alle 19:00 circa.

Inoltre, il decano del Collegio dei cardinali ha ricordato che la Basilica di San Pietro per il mese di maggio organizza il Rosario ogni sabato sera alle 21:00

Domani chi vuole tra i Cardinali può celebrare l’Eucaristia nella propria sede titolare.

Infine, è stato segnalato che i lavori di ristrutturazione a Casa Santa Marta, in fase avanzata, termineranno il 5 maggio. Il personale e tutti coloro che sono coinvolti saranno accolti a Santa Marta e Santa Marta Vecchia. L’ingresso negli ambienti sarà consentito tra martedì sera e mercoledì mattina, prima della celebrazione della Messa Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice.

The ninth General Congregation of the Cardinals began at 9.00 this morning, with a moment of joint prayer. There were 177 Cardinals present, of whom 127 were electors.

At the beginning, lots were drawn to select the Cardinals of the Commission who assist the Camerlengo in the particular congregations for the handling of ordinary business. They were Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., and Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, while Cardinal Reinhard Marx remains confirmed as coordinator of the Council for the Economy.

The session was divided into 26 interventions, which touched different topics of ecclesial and pastoral relevance. There was a reflection on the dual task of the Church: to live and to witness communion within, and to promote fraternity in the world. The magisterium of Pope Francis and the processes initiated during his papacy were recalled with gratitude, emphasizing the responsibility to continue them and to safeguard them.

The issues that emerged included collaboration and solidarity among the local Churches, the role of the Curia in relation to the Pope, the service of the Church and the Pontiff for the cause of peace, and the value of education as a tool for transformation and hope. References were made to the Jubilee and the desire for the next Pope to have a prophetic spirit, capable of leading a Church that does not close in on herself, but is able to go out and bring light to a world marked by despair.

A number of themes already addressed in the previous days were also re-examined, such as solidarity and collegiality, with a focus on the world and the attention it pays to the Church. Awareness emerged of the risk of the Church becoming self-referential and losing her relevance if she does not live in the world and with the world. There were also important references to ecumenical dialogue and mission.

It was communicated that the Monday sessions will be held in the morning, from 9.00 to approximately 12.30, and in the afternoon, from 17.00 to around 19.00.

In addition, the Dean of the College of Cardinals recalled that throughout the month of May, Saint Peter’s Basilica will organize the Rosary every Saturday evening at 21.00.

Tomorrow, the Cardinals who wish to do so may celebrate the Eucharist in their own titular Churches.

Finally, it was reported that the renovation work at the Casa Santa Marta is at an advanced stage, and will terminate on 5 May. The staff and all those who are involved will be accommodated at Santa Marta and Santa Marta Vecchia. Entry to the rooms will be permitted between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, before the celebration of the Mass Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice.
