Caro Fratello nell’episcopato,

sono qui anche quest’anno per parlarti della Terra Santa.

Sento forte la responsabilità di rivolgermi ai Vescovi cattolici del mondo, a nome del Santo Padre, per farvi pervenire l’appello della Chiesa, in risposta al grido di chi si trova in grave sofferenza.

Mentre vi scrivo, il nostro cuore è sollevato dalla tregua in atto. Sappiamo che è fragile e che, per natura sua, non basterà da sola a risolvere i problemi e ad estinguere l’odio in quell’area. Ma almeno gli occhi non vedono ulteriori esplosioni e non perpetuano l’angoscia dell’irreparabile.

Abbiamo visto pianti, disperazione, distruzione ovunque. Ora la nostra speranza è che il trionfo della morte inferta non sia la sua eterna vittoria. E ci torna la speranza di vedere il Risorto, Gesù Cristo nostro Signore, che proprio in quella terra mostrò, vivo, le piaghe della sua passione.

Sentiamo oggi che le parole rivolte dal Santo Padre ai Cristiani che abitano i Luoghi Santi non erano un pio auspicio, ma una speranza possibile: «Voi, fratelli e sorelle in Cristo che dimorate nei Luoghi di cui più parlano le Scritture, siete un piccolo gregge inerme, assetato di pace. Grazie per quello che siete, grazie perché volete rimanere nelle vostre terre, grazie perché sapete pregare e amare nonostante tutto. Siete un seme amato da Dio. E come un seme, apparentemente soffocato dalla terra che lo ricopre, sa sempre trovare la strada verso l’alto, verso la luce, per portare frutto e dare vita, così voi non vi lasciate inghiottire dall’oscurità che vi circonda ma, piantati nelle vostre sacre terre, diventate germogli di speranza, perché la luce della fede vi porta a testimoniare l’amore mentre si parla d’odio, l’incontro mentre dilaga lo scontro, l’unità mentre tutto volge alla contrapposizione» (Lettera ai Cattolici del Medio Oriente, 7 ottobre 2024).

Subito torna alla mente il nostro dovere - e uso questo termine con trepidazione, ma con decisione - di correre per aiutare, appena concretamente possibile, la vita a rinascere. A te, Fratello vescovo, e a tutti quelli che animerai nel tuo ministero, si rivolge il drammatico appello di Dio: «“Figlio dell’uomo, potranno queste ossa rivivere?”. Io risposi: “Signore Dio, tu lo sai”. Egli mi replicò: “Profetizza su queste ossa e annuncia loro: “Ossa inaridite, udite la parola del Signore. Così dice il Signore Dio a queste ossa: Ecco, io faccio entrare in voi lo spirito e rivivrete”» (Ez 37,3-5). Tutti, a partire dai bambini, hanno diritto a vivere in pace e a riavere case e scuole, a giocare insieme senza la paura di rivedere il ghigno satanico della morte. È vero. Per noi cristiani i Luoghi Santi hanno un valore particolare, sono incarnazione dell’Incarnazione. Essi sono stati custoditi fin dagli inizi dalle comunità cristiane, nella varietà delle loro tradizioni, e da secoli i Frati minori della Custodia li curano con fedeltà mirabile.

Intorno a quei luoghi sono sbocciate iniziative di grande valore pastorale: parrocchie, scuole, ospedali, case per anziani, centri di assistenza a migranti, sfollati, rifugiati. Proprio per aiutare a sostenere tutto questo il Santo Papa Paolo VI ha istituito la Colletta per i Luoghi Santi, nella forma che da allora viene annualmente ripetuta il venerdì santo o in altra data localmente fissata.

Quest’anno la Colletta diventa una risorsa imprescindibile: dopo la pandemia, la quasi completa interruzione dei pellegrinaggi e delle piccole attività che soprattutto i cristiani hanno creato a lato di essi, molti sono stati costretti all’esilio. Se vogliamo rinforzare la Terra Santa e assicurare il contatto vivo con i Luoghi Santi, occorre sostenere comunità cristiane che, nella loro varietà, offrano al Dio-con-noi la loro lode perenne, anche a nome nostro. Ma perché questo avvenga, abbiamo assoluto bisogno del dono generoso delle vostre comunità.

Vorrei che voi, Fratelli vescovi, facendo memoria delle immagini di distruzione e di morte che sono passate costantemente sotto i vostri occhi in questi tempi di nuovo Calvario, vi faceste apostoli persuasivi di questo impegno. La Terra Santa, i Luoghi Santi, il Popolo Santo di Dio sono la vostra famiglia, perché sono patrimonio di tutti noi. Sentite, vi prego, la Colletta come una delle vostre priorità pastorali: qui è in gioco la sopravvivenza di questa nostra preziosa presenza, che risale direttamente ai tempi di Gesù. Sono certo che il vostro entusiasmo e la vostra cura affettuosa si trasmetteranno alle comunità che vi sono affidate.

Per cortesia, evitate che le nostre Chiese promuovano collette parallele per lo stesso scopo, perché non siano compromessi il significato e l’efficacia della vostra carità, iniziativa universale del Successore di Pietro, il Vescovo di Roma. Quanto avrete raccolto potrà essere rimesso direttamente a questo Dicastero dai Commissariati di Terra Santa del vostro Paese. Ci aspettiamo che nessuna comunità consideri questa “liturgia”, come veniva chiamata in antico, quale cosa che non la riguarda.

Papa Francesco invia a tutti voi la sua Benedizione: Dio non dimenticherà, particolarmente in questo Anno Giubilare della Speranza, chi si sarà fatto testimone della Sua Provvidenza e strumento della Sua Pace. I nostri Cristiani di quelle terre vi aspettano. Grazie e buon pellegrinaggio giubilare.

Cher frère dans l’épiscopat,

Cette année, je viens vous parler encore une fois de la Terre Sainte.

Je ressens fortement le besoin de m’adresser aux Evêques catholiques du monde entier, au nom du Saint-Père, pour vous faire parvenir l’appel de l’Église en réponse au cri de ceux qui souffrent tant.

Au moment où je vous écris, notre cœur est soulagé à l’annonce de la trêve. Nous la savons fragile et que, par sa nature même, elle ne suffira pas à résoudre tous les problèmes ni à éteindre la haine dont souffre cette région. Au moins nous ne voyons plus de nouvelles explosions et l’angoisse a cessé face à l’irréparable.

Nous avons vu partout des larmes, du désespoir et de la destruction. Nous espérons maintenant que ce triomphe de la mort infligée n’ait pas de victoire éternelle. Et nous retrouvons l’espérance de voir le Ressuscité, Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur, qui précisément sur cette terre a montré, vivant, les plaies de sa Passion.

Nous voyons aujourd’hui que les paroles adressées par le Saint-Père aux chrétiens qui habitent les Lieux saints n’étaient pas un simple vœu pieux, mais une espérance possible: «Et vous, frères et sœurs dans le Christ qui habitez les Lieux dont les Écritures parlent le plus, vous êtes un petit troupeau sans défense, assoiffé de paix. Merci d’être ce que vous êtes, merci de vouloir rester sur vos terres, merci de savoir prier et aimer malgré tout. Vous êtes une graine aimée de Dieu. Et de même qu’une graine, apparemment étouffée par la terre qui la recouvre, sait toujours trouver son chemin vers le haut, vers la lumière, pour porter du fruit et donner la vie, de même vous ne vous laissez pas engloutir par les ténèbres qui vous entourent mais, plantés sur vos terres sacrées, vous devenez des germes d’espérance, parce que la lumière de la foi vous conduit à témoigner de l’amour alors que l’on parle de haine, de la rencontre alors que les affrontements se multiplient, de l’unité alors que tout tourne à la confrontation» (Lettre aux catholiques du Moyen-Orient, 7octobre2024).

Me vient immédiatement à l’esprit que notre devoir – et j’utilise ce terme avec appréhension et détermination – est d’accourir pour aider la vie à renaître le plus concrètement possible. A vous, frères Evêques, et à tous ceux que dont vous prenez soin dans votre ministère, s’adresse l’appel dramatique de Dieu: «Fils d’homme, ces ossements peuvent-ils revivre? – Je lui répondis: Seigneur Dieu, c’est toi qui le sais! – Il me dit alors: Prophétise sur ces ossements. Tu leur diras: Ossements desséchés, écoutez la parole du Seigneur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu à ces ossements: Je vais faire entrer en vous l’esprit, et vous vivrez» (Ez 37,3-5). Tous, à commencer par les enfants, ont le droit de vivre en paix et de retrouver leurs maisons et leurs écoles, de jouer ensemble sans avoir la peur de revoir le sourire satanique de la mort. C’est vrai. Pour nous chrétiens, les Lieux saints ont une valeur particulière, ils sont l’incarnation du mystère de l’Incarnation. Ils ont été gardés dès le début par les communautés chrétiennes dans la variété de leurs traditions et, depuis des siècles, les frères mineurs de la Custodie en prennent soin avec une fidélité admirable.

Autour de ces lieux fleurissent des initiatives d’une grande valeur pastorale: paroisses, écoles, hôpitaux, maisons pour personnes âgées, centres d’assistance aux migrants, aux personnes déplacées et aux réfugiés. C’est précisément pour les soutenir que le Saint Pape Paul VI a institué la Collecte pour les Lieux saints, selon les modalités que vous connaissez, chaque année le Vendredi Saint ou à une autre date fixée localement.

Cette année, la Collecte est devenue une ressource incontournable : après la pandémie, l’interruption presque complète des pèlerinages et des petites activités que les chrétiens ont su créer proche d’eux, beaucoup ont été contraints à l’exil. Si nous voulons renforcer la Terre Sainte et assurer le contact vivant avec les Lieux saints, il faut soutenir les communautés chrétiennes qui, dans leur variété, offrent à Dieu-avec-nous leur louange éternelle, aussi en notre nom. Mais pour que cela se produise, nous avons absolument besoin du don généreux de vos communautés.

Je voudrais, chers confrères dans l’épiscopat, en faisant mémoire des images de destruction et de mort qui ont été présentées constamment à nos yeux en ces temps de nouveau Calvaire, que vous vous fassiez les apôtres persuasifs de cet engagement. La Terre Sainte, les Lieux saints, le peuple saint de Dieu sont votre famille car ils sont notre patrimoine commun. Je vous en prie, la Collecte doit être une de vos priorités pastorales : ici est en jeu la survie de cette précieuse présence qui remonte directement à l’époque de Jésus. Je suis certain que vous transmettrez votre enthousiasme et votre attention particulière aux communautés qui vous sont confiées.

Je vous remercie de veiller à ce que nos Eglises ne promeuvent pas de collectes parallèles dans le même but afin de ne pas compromettre la signification et l’efficacité de votre charité, initiative universelle du Successeur de Pierre, l’Evêque de Rome. Ce que vous aurez recueilli pourra être remis directement à ce Dicastère par les Commissariats de Terre Sainte de votre pays. Nous attendons qu’aucune communauté ne considère cette «liturgie», comme elle était appelée auparavant, comme quelque chose qui ne la concernerait pas.

Soyez assurés que le Pape François vous envoie à tous sa bénédiction: Dieu n’oubliera pas, en particulier en cette année jubilaire de l’espérance, ceux qui auront été témoins de sa Providence et se feront les instruments de sa paix. Nos chrétiens de ces terres vous attendent. Merci et bon pèlerinage jubilaire.

Dear Brother in the Episcopate,

Here I am to talk to you once again about the Holy Land.

I feel a strong sense of responsibility to address the Catholic Bishops of the world, in the name of the Holy Father, conveying the Church’s appeal in response to the cry of those who are suffering so much.

As I write to you, our hearts are lifted by the ceasefire in effect. We know that it is fragile and that, by its very nature, it will not be enough on its own to solve the problems and extinguish the hatred in that area. But at least our eyes no longer see explosions, perpetuating the anguish of the irreparable.

We have witnessed tears, despair and destruction everywhere. Now our hope is that the defeat inflicted by death will not be its eternal victory. And our hope is renewed in seeing the Risen One, Jesus Christ our Lord, who in that very land revealed the wounds of His passion, alive.

Today we feel that the words addressed by the Holy Father to the Christians who live in the Holy Places were not a pious wish, but a possible hope: “you, brothers and sisters in Christ who dwell in the lands of which the Scriptures speak most often, are a small, defenceless flock, thirsting for peace. Thank you for what you are, thank you for wanting to remain in your lands, thank you for being able to pray and love despite everything. You are a seed loved by God. Just as a seed, apparently pressed down by the earth that covers it, is always able to find its way upwards, towards the light, in order to bear fruit and give life, do not let yourselves be engulfed by the darkness that surrounds you. Planted in your sacred lands, become sprouts of hope, because the light of faith leads you to testify to love amid words of hatred, to encounter amid growing confrontation, to unity amid increasing hostility” (Letter to the Catholics of the Middle East, 7 October 2024).

Immediately, our duty – and I use this term with both trepidation and determination – comes to mind: to run, as soon as concretely possible, to help life to be reborn. To you, Brother Bishop, and to all those whom you animate in your ministry, God’s dramatic appeal is addressed: “‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O LordGod, you know.’Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of theLord.Thus says the LordGod to these bones: I will cause spirit to enter you, and you shall live’” (Ezek. 37:3-5). Everyone, starting with children, has the right to live in peace and to have homes and schools again, to play together without the fear of seeing the satanic grin of death again. It is true. For us Christians, the Holy Places have a special value; they are the incarnation of the Incarnation. From the very beginning, Christian communities of diverse traditions have safeguarded them and, for centuries, the Friars Minor of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land have cared for them with admirable fidelity.

Initiatives of great pastoral value have sprung up around those places: parishes, schools, hospitals, homes for the elderly, and assistance centres for migrants, displaced persons and refugees. Precisely to help support all this, Pope Saint Paul VI instituted the Collection for the Holy Places, repeated annually on Good Friday or on another locally established date.

This year the Collection becomes an essential resource: after the pandemic, with the almost complete interruption of pilgrimages and the small economic activities that Christians in particular have created alongside them, many have been forced into exile. If we want to strengthen the Holy Land and ensure living contact with the Holy Places, we must sustain Christian communities that, in their various traditions, offer perennial praise to the God-with-us, also in our name. For this to happen, we absolutely need the generous support of your communities.

I would like you, Brother Bishops, to become persuasive apostles of this commitment, remembering the images of destruction and death that have passed before our eyes in these times of new Calvary. The Holy Land, the Holy Places, the Holy People of God are your family, because they are the heritage of all of us. I implore you to feel the Collection as one of your pastoral priorities: at stake is the survival of this precious presence of ours, which dates back directly to the time of Jesus. I am certain that you will transmitted your enthusiasm and your affectionate care to the communities entrusted to you.

Please avoid that promoting parallel collections for the same purpose, which would compromise the meaning and effectiveness of your charity, a universal initiative of the Successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome. The Commissariats of the Holy Land in your country can send what you collect directly to this Dicastery. We anticipate that no community will consider this “liturgy”, as it was called in ancient times, as something that is not its concern.

Pope Francis sends all of you his Blessing: God will not forget, especially in this Jubilee Year of Hope, those who have become witnesses of His Providence and instruments of His Peace. Our Christians of the Holy Land await you. Thank you and have a good Jubilee pilgrimage.

Lieber Mitbruder im Bischofsamt,

auch in diesem Jahr bin ich hier, um zu Ihnen über das Heilige Land zu sprechen.

Ich fühle mich verpflichtet, mich im Namen des Heiligen Vaters an die katholischen Bischöfe der Welt zu wenden, um Ihnen den Appell der Kirche zu übermitteln als Antwort auf den Schrei derer, die schwer zu leiden haben.

Beim Schreiben dieser Zeilen ist unser Herz erleichtert über den gegenwärtigen Waffenstillstand. Wir wissen, dass er zerbrechlich ist und dass er allein nicht ausreichen wird, um die Probleme zu lösen und den Hass in dieser Region auszulöschen. Aber unsere Augen müssen wenigstens keine weiteren Explosionen sehen und die Angst vor dem Unwiederbringlichen aufrechterhalten.

Wir haben überall Tränen, Verzweiflung und Zerstörung gesehen. Nun hoffen wir, dass der Triumph des Todes in diesen Tagen nicht dessen ewiger Sieg bedeutet. Und wir hoffen, den Auferstandenen zu sehen, Jesus Christus, unseren Herrn, der eben in diesem Land als Lebendiger die Wunden seines Leidens gezeigt hat.

Wir spüren heute, dass die Worte des Heiligen Vaters an die Christen, die an den Heiligen Stätten wohnen, kein frommer Wunsch waren, sondern eine mögliche Hoffnung sind: „Ihr, Brüder und Schwestern in Christus, die ihr an Orten wohnt, von denen die Heilige Schrift so viel erzählt, ihr seid eine kleine, wehrlose Herde, die nach Frieden dürstet. Danke dafür, wer ihr seid, danke, dass ihr in eurem Land bleiben wollt, danke, dass ihr trotz allem zu beten und zu lieben versteht. Ihr seid ein von Gott geliebtes Samenkorn. Und wie ein Samenkorn, das von der Erde, die es bedeckt, scheinbar erstickt wird, und doch immer wieder den Weg nach oben findet, zum Licht, um Frucht zu tragen und Leben zu schenken, so lasst auch ihr euch nicht von der Finsternis um euch herum überwältigen, sondern werdet, eingepflanzt in eure heiligen Länder, zu Keimen der Hoffnung: Das Licht des Glaubens führt euch dazu, Zeugnis zu geben von der Liebe, während von Hass gesprochen wird, für Begegnung, während die Konfrontation überhandnimmt, für Einheit, während alles sich auf Konfrontation richtet.“ (Brief an die Katholiken des Nahen Ostens, 7. Oktober 2024).

Sofort kommt uns unsere Pflicht in den Sinn – und ich verwende diesen Begriff mit Zögern, aber mit Entschlossenheit –, so schnell wie eben möglich zu helfen, dass das Leben wiederersteht. An dich, Bruder Bischof, und an alle, die du durch deinen Dienst anleitest, richtet sich der dramatische Appell Gottes: „Menschensohn, können diese Gebeine wieder lebendig werden? Ich antwortete: Gott und Herr, du weißt es. Da sagte er zu mir: Sprich als Prophet über diese Gebeine und sag zu ihnen: Ihr ausgetrockneten Gebeine, hört das Wort des Herrn! So spricht Gott, der Herr, zu diesen Gebeinen: Siehe, ich selbst bringe Geist in euch, dann werdet ihr lebendig.“ (Ez 37,3-5). Alle Menschen, angefangen bei den Kindern, haben ein Recht darauf, in Frieden zu leben, ihr Zuhause und ihre Schule wiederzubekommen und gemeinsam zu spielen, ohne Angst haben zu müssen, das satanische Grinsen des Todes wiederzusehen. Es ist wahr: Für uns Christen haben die Heiligen Stätten einen besonderen Wert, denn sie sind die Inkarnation der Inkarnation. Sie wurden von Beginn an von den christlichen Gemeinden in der Vielfalt ihrer Traditionen gehütet, und die Franziskaner der Kustodie haben sie über Jahrhunderte hinweg mit bewundernswerter Treue gepflegt.

Rund um diese Orte sind Initiativen von großem pastoralem Wert entstanden: Pfarreien, Schulen, Krankenhäuser, Altenheime, Hilfszentren für Migranten, Vertriebene und Flüchtlinge. Um all dies zu unterstützen, hat der heilige Papst Paul VI. die Kollekte für die Heiligen Stätten eingeführt, die seither jedes Jahr am Karfreitag oder an einem anderen, örtlich festgelegten Datum gehalten wird.

In diesem Jahr wird die Kollekte zu einer unverzichtbaren Ressource: Nach der Pandemie und dem fast vollständigen Aus der Pilgerfahrten und der kleinen Unternehmungen, die vor allem Christen in diesem Umfeld geschaffen haben, sind viele ins Exil gezwungen worden. Wenn wir das Heilige Land stärken und einen lebendigen Kontakt zu den Heiligen Stätten gewährleisten wollen, müssen wir die christlichen Gemeinschaften unterstützen, die in ihrer Vielfalt dem Gott-mit-uns ihr immerwährendes Lob darbringen, auch in unserem Namen. Dazu brauchen wir aber unbedingt die großzügige Gabe Ihrer Gemeinden.

Ich möchte, dass Sie, liebe Bischöfe, sich die Bilder der Zerstörung und des Todes vor Augen halten, die in diesen Zeiten eines neuen Kalvarienbergs sich stets neu in ihren Blick drängen, und dass Sie sich zu überzeugenden Aposteln dieses Engagements machen. Das Heilige Land, die Heiligen Stätten, das Heilige Volk Gottes sind eure Familie, denn sie sind unser aller Erbe. Ich bitte Sie: Machen Sie die Kollekte zu einer Ihrer pastoralen Prioritäten: Es geht um das Überleben dieser kostbaren Präsenz, die auf die Zeit Jesu zurückgeht. Ich bin sicher, dass Ihr Enthusiasmus und Ihre liebevolle Fürsorge sich auf die Ihnen anvertrauten Gemeinden übertragen werden.

Bitte vermeiden Sie, dass unsere Kirchen parallele Sammlungen für denselben Zweck durchführen, damit der Sinn und die Wirksamkeit Ihrer Wohltätigkeit nicht beeinträchtigt werden, die Teil der universellen Initiative des Nachfolgers Petri ist, des Bischofs von Rom. Das von Ihnen gesammelte Geld kann von den Kommissariaten für das Heilige Land in Ihrem Land direkt an dieses Dikasterium überwiesen werden. Wir erwarten, dass keine Gemeinschaft diese „Liturgie“, wie sie in der Antike genannt wurde, als etwas betrachtet, das sie nichts angehen würde.

Papst Franziskus sendet Ihnen allen seinen Segen: Gott wird, besonders in diesem Jubiläumsjahr der Hoffnung, diejenigen nicht vergessen, die sich zu Zeugen seiner Vorsehung und zu Werkzeugen seines Friedens gemacht haben. Unsere Christen in diesen Ländern erwarten Sie. Vielen Dank und eine glückliche Jubiläums-Pilgerreise.

Aquí estoy también este año para hablarte de la Tierra Santa.

Siento la fuerte responsabilidad de dirigirme a los Obispos católicos, en nombre del Santo Padre, para haceros llegar la llamada de la Iglesia, en respuesta al grito de quien se encuentra en grave sufrimiento.

Mientras os escribo, nuestro corazón está confortado por la tregua en acto. Sabemos que es frágil y que, por su naturaleza, ella sola no bastará para resolver los problemas y para extinguir el odio en esa área. Pero, al menos, los ojos no ven nuevas explosiones y no se perpetúa en ellos la angustia de lo irreparable.

Hemos visto lágrimas, desesperación y destrucción por todas partes. Mas nuestra esperanza es que el triunfo de la muerte provocada no llegue a convertirse en una eterna victoria. Y vuelve a nosotros la esperanza de ver al Resucitado, Jesucristo nuestro Señor, que precisamente en esa tierra mostró, vivo, las llagas de su pasión.

Sentimos hoy que las palabras dirigidas por el Santo Padre a los cristianos que habitan los Lugares Santos no eran un piadoso deseo, sino una esperanza posible: «Vosotros, hermanos y hermanas en Cristo que habitáis en los Lugares de los que hablan las Escrituras, sois un pequeño rebaño inerme, sediento de paz. Gracias por lo que sois, gracias porque queréis permanecer en vuestras tierras, gracias porque sabéis rezar y amar a pesar de los pesares. Sois una semilla amada por Dios. Y como una semilla, en apariencia sofocada por la tierra que la recubre, sabe encontrar el camino hacia lo alto, hacia la luz, para llevar fruto y dar vida, así también vosotros no os dejéis tragar por la oscuridad que os rodea, sino que, plantados en vuestras sagradas tierras, convertíos en brotes de esperanza, porque la luz de vuestra fe os lleva a testimoniar el amor mientras se habla de odio, el encuentro mientras se extiende el enfrentamiento, la unidad mientras todo lleva hacia la contraposición» (Carta a los católicos del Medio Oriente, 7 de octubre de 2024).

Inmediatamente vuelve a la mente nuestro deber –y uso este término con temblor, pero decididamente– de correr, nada más sea posible de modo concreto, para ayudar a la vida a renacer. A ti, Hermano obispo, y a todos aquellos que animarás con tu ministerio, se dirige la dramática llamada de Dios: «Hijo de hombre, ¿revivirán estos huesos? Y yo respondí: Señor, Yahvé, tú lo sabes. Y él me dijo: Hijo de hombre, profetiza sobre estos huesos y diles: Huesos secos, oíd la palabra de Yahvé. Así dice el Señor, Yahvé, a estos huesos: Voy a hacer entrar en vosotros el espíritu y viviréis» (Ez 37,3-5). Todos, comenzando por los niños, tienen derecho a vivir en paz y a volver a tener casas y escuelas, a jugar juntos, sin el temor de volver a ver la sonrisa satánica de la muerte. Esto es verdad. Para nosotros los cristianos los Lugares Santos tienen un valor particular, son encarnación de la Encarnación. Ellos han sido custodiados desde los inicios por las comunidades cristianas, en la variedad de sus diversas tradiciones, y desde hace siglos los Frailes menores de la Custodia los cuidan con admirable fidelidad.

En torno a esos Lugares han surgido iniciativas de gran valor pastoral: parroquias, escuelas, hospitales, casas para ancianos, centros de asistencia para migrantes, desplazados y refugiados. Precisamente para ayudar a sostener todo esto el Santo Papa Pablo VI instituyó la Colecta para los Lugares Santos, en la forma que desde entonces anualmente se viene repitiendo en el Viernes Santo o en otra fecha fijada localmente.

Este año la Colecta se ha convertido en un recurso imprescindible: después de la pandemia, de la casi completa interrupción de las peregrinaciones y de las pequeñas actividades creadas, sobre todo por los cristianos, alrededor de aquellas, y del exilio al que muchos se han visto obligados. Si queremos reforzar la Tierra Santa y asegurar el contacto vivo con los Lugares Santos es necesario sostener a las comunidades cristianas que, en su variedad, ofrezcan al Dios-con-nosotros una perenne alabanza, también en nuestro nombre. Pero para que esto llegue a realizarse tenemos la absoluta necesidad del don generoso de vuestras comunidades.

Quisiera que vosotros, Hermanos obispos, recordando las imágenes de destrucción y muerte que han pasado constantemente ante vuestros ojos en estos tiempos de nuevo Calvario, os hicieseis apóstoles persuasivos de este empeño. La Tierra Santa, los Lugares Santos, el Pueblo Santo de Dios son vuestra familia, porque son patrimonio de todos nosotros. Os ruego que sintáis la Colecta como una de vuestras prioridades pastorales: aquí está en juego la supervivencia de esta nuestra preciosa presencia, que se remonta directamente a los tiempos de Jesús. Estoy seguro de que vuestro entusiasmo y vuestro cuidado afectuoso serán transmitidos a las comunidades que os están encomendadas.

Por favor, evitad que nuestras Iglesias promuevan colectas paralelas para este mismo fin, para que no suceda que queden comprometidos el significado y la eficacia de vuestra caridad, que responde a la iniciativa universal del Sucesor de Pedro, el Obispo de Roma. Todo cuanto hayáis recogido podrá ser enviado directamente a este Dicasterio por los Comisariados de Tierra Santa de vuestro País. Nos esperamos que ninguna comunidad pueda considerar esta “liturgia” –así era llamada en la antigüedad– como algo ajeno a sí misma que no le afecta.

El Papa Francisco os envía a todos su Bendición: Dios no olvidará, particularmente en este Año jubilar de la Esperanza, a quien se habrá hecho testigo de Su Providencia e instrumento de Su Paz. Nuestros cristianos de aquellas tierras os esperan. Gracias y os deseo una feliz peregrinación jubilar.

Caro irmão no episcopado,

Aqui estou de novo este ano para lhe falar da Terra Santa.

Sinto profundamente a responsabilidade de dirigir-me aos Bispos católicos do mundo, em nome do Santo Padre, para fazer-vos chegar o apelo da Igreja em resposta ao grito de quem se encontra em grave sofrimento.

Enquanto vos escrevo, o nosso coração está aliviado pela trégua em curso. Sabemos que é frágil e que, pela sua natureza, não bastará por si só para resolver os problemas e extinguir o ódio naquela área. Mas pelo menos os olhos não vêm ulteriores explosões e não perpetuam a angústia do irreparável.

Vimos choros, desespero, destruição por toda a parte. Ora a nossa esperança é que o triunfo da morte provocada não seja a sua eterna vitória. E renova-se a esperança de ver o Ressuscitado, Jesus Cristo nosso Senhor, que precisamente naquela terra, mostrou, vivo, as chagas da sua paixão.

Ouvimos hoje que as palavras dirigidas pelo Santo Padre aos Cristãos que abitam nos Lugares Santos, não se eram um piedoso auspício, mas uma esperança possível: «Vós, irmãos e irmãs em Cristo que habitais nos Lugares de que mais falam as Escrituras, sois um pequeno rebanho indefeso, sedento de paz. Obrigado por serdes quem sois, obrigado por desejardes permanecer nas vossas terras, obrigado por saberdes rezar e amar, apesar de tudo. Sois uma semente amada por Deus. E assim como a semente, aparentemente sufocada pela terra que a cobre, sabe sempre encontrar o seu caminho para o alto, rumo à luz, para dar fruto e vida, assim também vós não vos deixais engolir pelas trevas que vos circundam mas, plantados nas vossas terras sagradas, tornais-vos rebentos de esperança, porque a luz da fé vos leva a testemunhar o amor enquanto se fala de ódio, o encontro enquanto o conflito é desenfreado, a unidade enquanto tudo se transforma em oposição.» (Carta aos Católicos do Médio Oriente, 7 de Outubro de 2024).

Surge logo na nossa mente o nosso dever – e uso este termo com trepidação, mas com decisão – de correr para ajudar, apenas concretamente possível, a vida que renasce. A ti, Irmão bispo, e a todos aqueles que animarás no teu ministério, se dirige o dramático apelo de Deus: «“Filho do homem poderão estes ossos reviver?” Eu respondi: “Senhor Deus, tu o sabes. Ele me replicou: “Profetiza sobre estes ossos e anuncia-lhes: “Ossos secos oiçam a palavra do Senhor. Assim fala o Senhor Deus a estes ossos: Eis que eu faço entrar em vós o espirito e revivereis”» (Ez 37,3-5).

Todos, a começar pelas crianças, tem direito a viver em paz e a reaver casas e escolas, a brincar juntos sem o medo de rever o riso satânico da morte. É verdade. Para nós cristãos os Lugares Santos têm um valor particular, são encarnação da Incarnação. Estes são protegidos desde os inícios das comunidades cristãs, na variedade das suas tradições e desde há séculos que os Frades menores da Custódia os cuidam com fidelidade admirável.

À volta daqueles lugares nascem iniciativas de grande valor pastoral: paróquias, escolas. Hospitais, casas para anciãos, centros de assistência aos migrantes, desalojados, refugiados. Precisamente para ajudar a suster tudo isto o Santo Papa Paulo VI instituiu a Coleta para os Lugares Santos, na modalidade que desde então é repetida anualmente cada sexta-feira santa ou noutra ocasião localmente fixada.

Este ano a Coleta torna-se um recurso imprescindível: depois da pandemia, a quase completa interrupção das peregrinações e das pequenas atividades que sobretudo os cristãos criaram contemporaneamente com aquelas, muitos foram constrangidos ao exílio. Se queremos reforçar a Terra Santa e assegurar o contato vivo com os Lugares Santos, ocorre manter comunidades cristãs que, na sua variedade, oferecem ao Deus-connosco o seu perene louvor, também em nosso nome. Mas para que isto aconteça, temos absoluta necessidade do dom generoso das vossas comunidades.

Gostaria que vós, Irmãos bispos, fazendo memória das imagens de destruição e de morte que passaram constantemente sob os vossos olhos nestes tempos de novo Calvário, vos fizésseis apóstolos persuasivos deste empenho. A Terra Santa, os Lugares Santos, o Povo Santo de Deus são a vossa família, porque são património de todos nós. Senti, vos peço, a Coleta como uma das vossas prioridades pastorais: aqui está em jogo a sobrevivência desta nossa preciosa presença, que vem desde os tempos de Jesus. Estou certo que o vosso entusiasmo e o vosso cuidado afetuoso se transmitirão às comunidades que vos foram confiadas.

Por cortesia, evitai que as nossas Igrejas promovam coletas paralelas a este nosso objetivo, para que não sejam comprometidos o significado e a eficácia da vossa caridade, iniciativa universal do Sucessor de Pedro, o Bispo de Roma. Quanto havereis recolhido poderá ser mandado diretamente a este Dicastério pelos Comissários da Terra Santa do vosso Pais. Esperamos que nenhuma comunidade considere esta “liturgia”, como era chamada antigamente, qualquer coisa que não lhe diz respeito.

O Papa Francisco envia a todos vós a sua Bênção: Deus não esquecerá, particularmente neste Ano Jubilar da Esperança, quem se fará testemunha da Sua Providência e instrumento da Sua Paz. Os nossos Cristãos daquelas terras vos esperam. Obrigado e boa peregrinação jubilar.

DICASTERO PER LE CHIESE ORIENTALI

Introduzione

La“Colletta per la Terra Santa” nasce dalla volontà dei Pontefici di mantenere saldo il legame tra tutti i Cristiani del mondo e i Luoghi Santi. Essa rappresenta una fonte principale di sostentamento per la vita che si svolge attorno ai Luoghi Santi e costituisce lo strumento con cui la Chiesa si pone accanto alle comunità ecclesiali del Medio Oriente. Con l’Esortazione Apostolica ‘Nobis in Animo’ (25 marzo 1974), il Santo Papa Paolo VI ha dato un impulso decisivo a favore della Terra Santa, che aveva visitato nel suo storico pellegrinaggio del 1964.

Attraverso la Colletta, la Custodia Francescana può portare avanti la sua missione fondamentale: custodire i Luoghi Santi, le pietre della memoria, e favorire la presenza cristiana, le pietre vive della Terra Santa. Questo avviene mediante numerose attività di solidarietà, come il mantenimento delle strutture pastorali, educative, assistenziali, sanitarie e sociali.

Di norma, la Custodia di Terra Santa riceve il 65% dei proventi della Colletta, mentre il restante 35% viene destinato al Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali, che provvede a distribuirlo.

Di seguito si riportano informazioni circa l’utilizzo della Colletta e i beneficiari.

Sussidi ordinari e straordinari

I territori menzionati dalle Sacre Scritture nella narrazione della storia salvifica, che beneficiano, in varie forme, del sostegno proveniente dalla Colletta sono: Gerusalemme, Palestina, Israele, Giordania, Cipro, Siria, Libano, Egitto, Etiopia, Eritrea, Turchia, Iran e Iraq. Questi Paesi affrontano sfide di diversa natura e il Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali interviene per sostenere le comunità locali, con particolare attenzione alla vita delle Chiese e delle loro opere. Viene elargito un sussidio ordinario annuale a tutte le eparchie orientali e latine dei suddetti Paesi, con l’eccezione dell’Etiopia, dove la Chiesa latina è posta sotto la cura del Dicastero per l’Evangelizzazione. Il contributo ricevuto consente di mantenere vive le realtà ecclesiali attraverso il sostegno ai sacerdoti, ai religiosi, alle istituzioni, alle famiglie e alle iniziative pastorali.

La Colletta rappresenta quindi un aiuto concreto per preservare la presenza cristiana in Terra Santa e in tutto il Medio Oriente, in contesti segnati da difficoltà sociali, economiche e politiche.

Sussidi per l’attività scolastica

La Diocesi Patriarcale di Gerusalemme dei Latini, la Custodia Francescana, oltre alle altre Chiese e agli Istituti Religiosi, sono impegnate nella formazione scolastica dei giovani della Terra Santa e insieme al Segretariato di Solidarietà, sono sostenute dai proventi della Colletta. La guerra a Gaza, l’aumento della disoccupazione e la mancanza di turismo hanno influito negativamente sulla situazione economica generale delle scuole in Palestina. Il Dicastero riserva una particolare attenzione alle emergenze e assicura che la formazione prosegua ininterrottamente e rimanga accessibile a tutti gli alunni.

Una prestigiosa Istituzione che assicura la formazione accademica è la Bethlehem University. Quasi 3300 giovani, musulmani e cristiani, vi vengono formati intellettualmente e umanamente con la speranza di impegnarsi nella costruzione di un Paese dove regni rispetto reciproco e dove sia preservata la dignità della persona umana. È apprezzabile l’impegno dei Fratelli delle Scuole Cristiane nella conduzione dell’Università.

Formazione accademica, spirituale e umana dei seminaristi e sacerdoti delle Chiese poste sotto la giurisdizione del Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali

Grazie alla Colletta si può provvedere a devolvere contributi ai seminari, alle case di formazione religiosa e ad istituzioni culturali nei territori di competenza, sostenendo sotto varie forme (borse di studio, tasse universitarie e necessità varie), anche a Roma, giovani seminaristi e sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose e, compatibilmente con i fondi disponibili, alcuni laici.

Conclusione

L’Anno Santo ha avuto inizio il 24 dicembre 2024, quando Papa Francesco ha inaugurato il Giubileo della speranza aprendo la Porta Santa della Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano.

Questo tempo di grazia è anche un invito a seminare speranza, specialmente per coloro che faticano a trovarla. Attraverso la preghiera incessante e l’impegno delle persone di buona volontà, è possibile offrire un sostegno concreto: aiutare una famiglia in difficoltà, accompagnare un bambino nel suo cammino verso il futuro, garantire assistenza ai rifugiati e agli sfollati, sostenere la formazione di sacerdoti e religiosi, nonché contribuire alla conservazione dei luoghi Santi.

Che questo Anno giubilare sia per tutti un’occasione di rinnovamento e di solidarietà, affinché la speranza risplenda soprattutto nei cuori di quanti ne hanno maggiormente bisogno.

DICASTERY FOR THE EASTERN CHURCHES

2024 A.D.

Introduction

The Collection “Pro Terra Sancta” was born out of the desire of the Popes to maintain a strong bond between the faithful across the world and the Holy Places. It is the main source of material support for Christian life in the Holy Land and a tool for the universal Church to express solidarity with the ecclesial communities of the Middle East. With the Apostolic Exhortation ‘Nobis in Animo’ (25 March 1974), Pope Saint Paul VI gave a significant impulse to supporting the Holy Land, which he had visited during his historic pilgrimage in 1964.

Through the funds traditionally collected on Good Friday, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land is able to carry out its important mission: preserving the Sacred Places, the stones of memory, and promoting the Christian presence, the living stones, through its many pastoral, educational, welfare, health and social facilities.

As a rule, the Custody of the Holy Land receives 65% of the Collection, while the remaining 35% goes to the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, which sees to its distribution.

What follows is a report about the use and beneficiaries of the Collection.

Ordinary and Extraordinary Subsidies

The territories that the Sacred Scriptures mention in the narrative of salvation history, which benefit in different forms from the Collection, are Jerusalem, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. These countries face challenges of various natures and the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches intervenes to sustain the local communities, with particular attention to the life and activities of the Churches. An ordinary annual subsidy is given to all the Eastern and Latin eparchies of the aforementioned countries, with the exception of Ethiopia, where the Latin Church is placed under the care of the Dicastery for Evangelization. The contribution received allows the ecclesial realities to remain alive through the support of priests, religious, institutions, families and pastoral initiatives.

The Collection therefore represents concrete assistance to preserve the Christian presence in the Holy Land, and throughout the Middle East, in contexts marked by social, economic and political difficulties.

Subsidies for Educational Activities

The Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custody, the Eastern Churches of the Holy Land, and Religious Institutes are committed to the education of young people in the Holy Land, and, together with the Secretariat of Solidarity, are supported by the proceeds of the Collection. The war in Gaza, rising unemployment and lack of tourism have negatively affected the general economic situation of schools in Palestine. The Dicastery pays particular attention to emergencies and ensures that education continues uninterrupted and remains accessible to all students.

A prestigious institution that ensures academic formation is Bethlehem University. Almost 3,300 young people, Muslims and Christians, receive intellectual and human formation in the hope they will engage in building a country where mutual respect reigns and where human dignity is preserved. The commitment of the De La Salle Brothers in running the university is praiseworthy.

Academic, Spiritual and Human Formation of the Seminarians and Priests of the Churches under the Jurisdiction of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches

Thanks to the Collection, contributions can be made to seminaries, religious formation houses and cultural institutions in the territories of competence, supporting in different forms (scholarships, university fees and various other needs), even in Rome, young seminarians and priests, men and women religious and, depending on the funds available, some lay people.

Conclusion

The Holy Year began on 24 December 2024, when Pope Francis inaugurated the Jubilee of Hope by opening the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

This time of grace is also an invitation to sow hope, especially for those who struggle to find it. Through incessant prayer and the commitment of people of good will, it is possible to offer concrete support: helping a family in difficulty, accompanying a child on the journey towards the future, ensuring assistance to refugees and displaced persons, supporting the formation of priests and religious, as well as contributing to the preservation of the Holy Places.

May this Jubilee Year be for all an occasion of renewal and solidarity, so that hope may shine above all in the hearts of those who need it most.

Rapporto sommario 2023/2024

La Custodia di Terra Santa da secoli si impegna nella conservazione e la rivitalizzazione dei luoghi santi del cristianesimo nella Terra di Gesù e in tutto il Medio Oriente. Tra i vari obiettivi della missione francescana, si ricordano il sostegno e lo sviluppo della minoranza cristiana che vi abita, la conservazione e valorizzazione di aree archeologiche e santuari, l’intervento nei casi di emergenza, la liturgia nei luoghi di culto, le opere apostoliche e l’assistenza ai pellegrini. Anche per il 2023/2024, la presenza francescana in Terra Santa, si è manifestata attraverso la progettazione, programmazione e l’esecuzione dei seguenti progetti e opere:

Le opere elencate sono state realizzate grazie a vari tipi di contributi economici, in primo luogo la Colletta del Venerdì Santo, poi le attività di fundraising della Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) e associazione Pro Terra Sancta (PTS), ma anche di altri donatori privati e istituzionali.

Dopo un anno dall’inizio della guerra che ancora una volta flagella questa terra, le entrate economiche che provenivano dalla stessa regione, parrocchie, santuari, pellegrini, ecc., sono state ridotte al minimo, e con questo molti progetti sono state ridimensionati, rallentati, sospesi o cancellati cercando di dare la priorità a quelli che toccano direttamente le persone nel bisogno. Abbiamo davanti nuove sfide e dobbiamo riflettere su come procedere sapendo che non siamo soli se ci lasciamo guidare dalla divina Provvidenza.

OPERE RIVOLTE AI PELLEGRINI

Acri: edificio ex scuola materna

§ In corso la progettazione degli interventi di ristrutturazione dell’edificio “Scuola materna”, in previsione di rendere nuovamente abitabile l’appartamento in cui risiedevano le suore che gestivano l’opera.

Acri: convento di San Francesco

§ Studio in corso per interventi di restauro delle finestre e delle facciate per risolvere problemi di infiltrazioni di umidità.

§ Completati lavori di manutenzione straordinaria della torre del campanile.

Ain Karem: santuario di San Giovanni Battista

§ Completati i lavori di messa in sicurezza dell’impianto elettrico del complesso che comprende convento, chiesa e seminario. Adeguata la potenza elettrica agli attuali bisogni del complesso.

§ Completati i lavori di ristrutturazione della cucina del convento.

§ Completati i lavori di manutenzione delle stanze del seminario.

§ Ancora in fase di progettazione i lavori di scavo/restauro della chiesa.

Ain Karem: Casanova

§ Completati i lavori di messa in sicurezza dell’impianto elettrico del Casanova per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini. Adeguata la potenza elettrica agli attuali bisogni del complesso.

Ain Karem: santuario di San Giovanni del Deserto

§ In corso di realizzazione gli interventi urgenti per la conservazione del santuario, sulla base di un masterplan che comprende la regimentazione delle acque meteoriche nell’area circostante al convento.

§ Completati i primi interventi di riparazione dell’impianto idrico principale.

§ Completata l’installazione di ringhiere di sicurezza per le finestre del convento delle suore.

§ In corso gli studi di dettaglio per il rinnovo dell’impianto idrico principale.

Ain Karem: santuario della Visitazione

§ Completati i lavori di installazione di una nuova campana.

§ In corso interventi di manutenzione per la conservazione del santuario.

§ In corso di valutazione gli interventi di adeguamento dell’ascensore del convento.

Beit Sahour: santuario del Campo dei Pastori

§ Definito un masterplan di interventi per la conservazione e lo sviluppo del sito, che comprende nuove cappelle interne ed esterne, il restauro della grotta dei pastori, nuovi servizi igienici e infrastrutture.

§ Completamenti i lavori per la realizzazione di tre delle cinque cappelle interne per le celebrazioni dei pellegrini (cappella croata, spagnola, araba).

§ Completati i lavori di realizzazione della prima delle cappelle esterne (cappella di Guadalupe).

§ Completati i lavori essenziali di sistemazione della zona circostante alle nuove cappelle.

§ In corso di valutazione l’implementazione delle successive fasi del progetto che prevedono due ulteriori cappelle interne, quattro cappelle esterne, il rinnovo della sacristia, il completamento delle sistemazioni esterne, il restauro della grotta, la sistemazione della zona archeologica in collaborazione con il Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana (PIAC) e lo Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF).

Betania: santuario di Casa di Marta, Maria e Lazzaro

§ Completato il restauro e la valorizzazione dei resti bizantini e medievali del convento di Betania attraverso il recupero delle aree degradate.

§ Completati gli studi per il rinnovo dell’illuminazione interna della chiesa.

Betlemme: convento di Santa Caterina

§ In corso i lavori per la sostituzione dell’ascensore del convento per adeguarlo alle norme di sicurezza.

§ Completati i lavori di installazione di pannelli fotovoltaici per la produzione di energia elettrica.

Betlemme: Casa del Fanciullo

§ Completati i lavori di rifacimento di 5 bagni a servizio della struttura.

§ Completata la proposta della sistemazione del giardino della proprietà.

§ Completati i lavori di rinnovamento della pavimentazione del piazzale e delle relative infrastrutture.

§ Completati i lavori di manutenzione dell’impianto di acqua sanitaria e riabilitazione delle cisterne antiche.

NB: Nella realizzazione delle opere, pur comportando un fattore di complicazione per via dei permessi da richiedere, è stato privilegiato l’impiego di manodopera proveniente dalla Cisgiordania per dare lavoro a cristiani di un territorio che non beneficia né di welfare né di ammortizzatori sociali e che in questi ultimi anni, tra la situazione di conflitto e i vari lockdown, sarebbero rimasti totalmente privi di risorse economiche.

Ulteriori complicazioni durante il recente conflitto che ha comportato periodi di totale chiusura dei checkpoint dopo l’inizio del conflitto per quasi due mesi e poi a intermittenza. Ove possibile, gli operai sono stati impiegati nei santuari e nei conventi della Cisgiordania.

Appartamenti per i bisognosi e le giovani coppie

Sono numerose le case di proprietà della Custodia di Terra Santa, alla quale gli inquilini pagano affitti simbolici. Si tratta in genere di aree sovraffollate, dove in piccoli appartamenti convivono spesso diversi nuclei familiari. Ogni anno la Custodia interviene per mantenere e migliorare le condizioni delle abitazioni, cercando al contempo di creare ulteriori abitazioni per sostenere la comunità locale.

Opere culturali

§ STUDIUM BIBLICUM FRANCISCANUM (SBF) – GERUSALEMME

- Ogni anno la Custodia di Terra Santa sostiene economicamente la Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme.

- Formazione di 64 studenti in scienze bibliche presso lo Studium Biblicum Franciscanum provenienti da varie parte del mondo e da province religiose e diocesi povere, ai quali la Custodia garantisce vitto e alloggio e una borsa di studio. Essi saranno destinati all’insegnamento della Sacra Scrittura in vari paesi del mondo. Attualmente ci sono 36 studenti per la licenza, 11 per il dottorato,4 per il diploma di formazione biblica, 2 straordinari e 11 uditori.

§ CHRISTIAN MEDIA CENTER (CMC) – GERUSALEMME/NAZARETH

I servizi offerti comprendono:

- Website.

- Terra Santa News, notiziario settimanale che racconta fede, storia, attualità della Terra Santa; trasmesso da circa 35 emittenti nel mondo in 10 lingue.

- Documentari su temi sociali e religiosi.

- Diretta di celebrazioni liturgiche ed eventi.

§ ISTITUTO DI MUSICA MAGNIFICAT – GERUSALEMME

- L’istituto Magnificat è affiliato al Conservatorio di Vicenza il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale e internazionale.

- Accoglie circa 240 studenti cristiani, musulmani ed ebrei, guidati da circa 30 professori anche essi ebrei, cristiani e musulmani.

§ ACCOGLIENZA DI GIOVANI SEMINARISTI – GERUSALEMME

- Accoglienza nel Seminario Francescano Internazionale di San Salvatore a Gerusalemme.

- Accoglienza nel Seminario di Ain Karem.

§ FORMAZIONE DI GIOVANI SEMINARISTI – GERUSALEMME

- Formazione teologica presso lo Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum (STJ) di circa 46 giovani provenienti dalle varie Province dell’Ordine dei Frati Minori.

- Formazione di circa 84 giovani dall’aspirandato agli studi specialistici.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA PARROCCHIA LATINA DI GERUSALEMME

Supporto alle famiglie povere in situazione di difficoltà socio-economica attraverso la copertura dei costi di spese di affitto, spese per interventi medici e medicine ed altre varie, soprattutto per quelle famiglie che hanno a carico anziani e disabili non autosufficienti.

Beneficiari raggiunti: circa 50 persone, attraverso copertura dei costi per studio, cure mediche e affitto.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA PARROCCHIA LATINA DI BETLEMME

Supporto alle famiglie povere in situazione di difficoltà socio-economica attraverso la copertura dei costi di spese di affitto, spese per interventi medici e medicine ed altre varie, soprattutto per quelle famiglie che hanno a carico anziani e disabili non autosufficienti.

Inoltre, l’Arab Catholic Scout Group per l’acquisto delle nuove divise.

Beneficiari raggiunti: circa 80 persone, attraverso copertura dei costi per studio, cure mediche e affitto.

§ TERRA SANCTA MUSEUM: HERITAGE EDUCATION HUB FOR PALESTINIAN YOUTH - GERUSALEMME

A settembre 2024 è partita la seconda fase di questo progetto, con lo scopo di continuare ed espande le attività educative e culturali legate alla collezione archeologica del TSM e rivolte agli studenti delle scuole di Gerusalemme Est, alle famiglie ed a tutta la comunità locale palestinese. Il progetto include attività realizzate non solo negli spazi della sezione archeologica del Terra Sancta Museum, ma anche nei locali di Dar El-Consul e Musa Efendi.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 180 bambini e ragazzi di Gerusalemme Est beneficiari delle attività socioeducative e sul patrimonio culturale.

§ PSS PER BAMBINI E ADOLESCENTI - GERUSALEMME

In collaborazione con lo Spafford Children’s Center è stata riscontrata la necessità di attivare un programma integrato di protezione di trattamento del trauma; supporto psicosociale e gestione della rabbia e dello stress per bambini/e, giovani e genitori. Sono state realizzate sessioni di trattamento del trauma e gestione della rabbia e dello stress all’interno del centro e nell’ambito di alcune scuole di Gerusalemme Est. Sono stati organizzati anche dei campi estivi.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 400 bambini e circa 250 persone tra adulti, caregivers e staff.

§ SUPPORTO AL MAGNIFICAT INSTITUTE OF MUSIC DI GERUSALEMME

Supporto alle attività del Magnificat, offrendo la possibilità di frequentare i corsi e le lezioni anche alle fasce più vulnerabili e meno abbienti della popolazione di Gerusalemme finanziando l’erogazione delle borse di studio.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 190 ragazzi.

§ SUPPORTO AL CONVENTO DI SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL DI GERUSALEMME

Nel 2019 si sono ristaurati alcuni locali in stato di abbandono all’interno del Convento ed ha aperto la Dar Mamilla Guesthouse, il cui obiettivo non è solo quello di ospitare visitatori da tutto il mondo, ma anche di aiutare il lavoro delle Suore della Carità di San Vincenzo de Paoli. Anche per il 2024, una parte delle entrate della Dar Mamilla Guesthouse è stata devoluta a sostegno delle loro attività.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 200 bambini e bambine dai tre mesi ai quattro anni.

Circa 30 persone con disabilità fisiche e/o disturbi psichici.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA GREEK CATHOLIC ANNUNCIATION SOCIETY DI GERUSALEMME

Sopporto del centro, tramite la realizzazione di un programma estivo rivolto a bambini/e per rafforzare e valorizzare le loro capacità e competenze, in un ambiente sano e sicuro che favorisca l’apprendimento, la crescita personale e il senso di responsabilità verso la comunità. Le attività educative rivolte a bambini/e hanno come obiettivo quello di sviluppare le loro abilità pratiche, rafforzare la loro creatività e immaginazione, promuovere la comunicazione, la collaborazione e il lavoro di gruppo, attraverso la realizzazione di laboratori specifici.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 50 bambini e le rispettive famiglie.

§ SUPPORTO AL SAINT JOSEPH HOSPITAL - GERUSALEMME

Supporto economico del St. Joseph Hospital per l’acquisto di 53 carrozzine per i pazienti dell’ospedale. Il Saint Joseph Hospital è l'unico ospedale cattolico di Gerusalemme Est; serve circa 50.000 persone all'anno, dalla popolazione di Gerusalemme Est, della Cisgiordania ed i casi più gravi provengono anche da Gaza.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 1.500 pazienti ogni mese che usufruiscono delle carrozzine.

§ SUPPORTO AL SAINT LOUIS FRENCH HOSPITAL DI GERUSALEMME

Contributo alla realizzazione di un nuovo ascensore all’interno dell’ospedale. Grazie a questo è possibile spostare con più facilità le barelle e i pazienti in sedia a rotelle. L'ospedale è specializzato nella fornitura di cure palliative ai malati terminali con una capienza totale di 57 posti letto, suddivisi tra reparto di geriatria; geriatria complicata; ed oncologia. L’ospedale offre inoltre trattamenti ai malati di HIV.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 55 pazienti.

§ SUPPORTO AL JERUSALEM AFRICAN COMMUNITY CENTER (JACC)

Supporto delle attività di JACC, un centro che assiste circa 3.000 richiedenti asilo provenienti da Eritrea, Sudan ed Etiopia, tra cui molte famiglie con bambini, che si trovano a Gerusalemme. Il centro realizza attività di supporto legale, psicologico, nonché corsi di formazione e la distribuzione di beni di prima necessità per le famiglie più bisognose.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 3.000 membri della comunità, principalmente donne e bambini/e.

Circa 7 membri dello staff e circa 100 tra volontari e collaboratori esterni.

§ SUPPORTO AL CONVENTO FRANCESCANO DI SAN GIOVANNI - AIN KARIM

Questo progetto ha provveduto al rifacimento della cucina del Convento di San Giovanni, che si trovava in uno stato di grave necessità. La cucina fa parte del blocco del convento che risale al 1670, perciò necessitava di interventi urgenti per metterla a norma e renderla sicura ed agibile. Il progetto si è concluso e i lavori per la cucina e gli impianti sono terminati.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 30 residenti del Convento di San Giovanni di Ain Karem.

§ PROMUOVERE LA SOSTENIBILITÀ AMBIENTALE ATTRAVERSO L’EDUCAZIONE E L’INCLUSIVITÀ – GERICO, SEBASTIA, BETLEMME

Il progetto è realizzato in partnership con il Mosaic Centre e l’Associazione Tamer Institute for Community Education (sede a Ramallah) nelle città di Betlemme, Gerico e nel villaggio di Sebastia. Mira a contribuire allo sviluppo sostenibile di comunità nei territori palestinesi, attraverso la sensibilizzazione della società civile palestinese sulle tematiche della sostenibilità ambientale e dell’inclusività. In particolare, sono in corso di implementazione due percorsi di educazione ambientale e culturale rivolti a giovani e bambini di Gerico e Sebastia, nonché diversi corsi di formazione rivolti allo staff del Mosaic Centre di Betlemme, che include due artiste mosaiciste sordomute. Tra questi è stato condotto un training per trainer per renderli autonomi nel gestire attività di arteterapia rivolte a persone con disabilità; un corso di disegno per migliorare le loro competenze artistiche ed un corso di LIS per migliorare la comunicazione dello staff del Mosaic Centre. Altre attività prevedono l’installazione di pannelli fotovoltaici sulle guesthouse di ProTS e sui locali del Mosaic Centre per migliorare l’efficienza economica. l’impatto ambientale e l’accessibilità per persone con disabilità.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Almeno 25 persone con disabilità del Governatorato di Betlemme.

Almeno 150 bambini e ragazzi di Gerico e Sebastia.

§ SPORT PER I GIOVANI - SEBASTIA

La comunità di Sebastia, specialmente le fasce più giovani della popolazione, continua a vivere una situazione di estrema incertezza e vulnerabilità a causa della guerra in corso a Gaza e la crescente violenza dei coloni israeliani che abitano le colonie intorno al villaggio. In questo contesto, si è offerto ai ragazzi la possibilità di svolgere attività ricreative ed educative, per continuare a sperare in un futuro in cui il dialogo e la convivenza siano ancora possibili. Il progetto, realizzato da maggio a dicembre 2024 in partnership con il Mosaic Centre, ha riguardato l’organizzazione di un corso di allenamento di calcio per la preparazione dei giovani partecipanti alle competizioni sportive.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 70 giovani dei villaggi di Sebastia, Nisf Jubeil e dintorni.

§ CASA DELL’AMICIZIA - BETANIA

Il progetto prevede la formazione e la conservazione del patrimonio culturale, al servizio delle istituzioni accademiche e della comunità palestinese: finanziato dalla Cooperazione Italiana (AICS), in partnership con il Mosaic Centre, l’Al Quds University, l’Università degli Studi di Palermo e l’Università di Torino, il progetto ha l’obiettivo di contribuire alla protezione e la salvaguardia del patrimonio culturale di Betania per favorire uno sviluppo sociale ed economico inclusivo che promuova la cultura, il turismo sostenibile ed i prodotti locali.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 250 bambini e bambine di Betania coinvolti in attività educative (visite guidate e workshops artistici) e di archeologia sperimentale.

Circa 170 giovani di Betania e dintorni coinvolti in visite guidate.

33 studenti dell’Università di Al Quds hanno partecipato a formazione specifica, 7 sono iscritti al nuovo corso di laurea per tecnici restauratori.

circa 10 operai di Betania coinvolti nelle attività di restauro.

60 giovani e donne hanno partecipato a workshops sulla produzione di candele profumate, 4 donne di Betania hanno iniziato la produzione di candele.

6 donne beduine della comunità di Jabal al Baba sono state coinvolte nella coltivazione di zaatar e lavando in un pezzo di terra riabilitato.

§ SUPPORTO AL CENTRO HOGAR NIÑO DIOS DI BETLEMME

In collaborazione con i religiosi del Verbo Incarnato si è appena concluso un progetto di messa in sicurezza della nuova casa in cui verranno spostati gli ospiti più grandi e un progetto di installazione di pannelli solari. Nell’ambito del progetto di orientamento al lavoro è stata anche inserita la figura di una idroterapista. Inoltre, ProTS ha messo a disposizione dell’opera un volontario per ulteriori 9 mesi.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 38 bambini con disabilità dai 2 ai 18 anni.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA SOCIETÀ CARITATEVOLE ANTONIANA E ALLE SUORE DELL’HORTUS CONCLUSUS” DI BETLEMME

La collaborazione consiste in attuazione di lavori di ristrutturazione e miglioria degli istituti, supporto allo staff attraverso training, fornitura di medicine e attrezzature, supporto nelle spese correnti. In questa situazione di emergenza è stato riattivato il Centro Diurno grazie al quale circa 33 anziani (non solo residenti all’Antoniana) hanno la possibilità di avere un pasto caldo e di svolgere delle attività aggregative. Le suore dell’Hortus Conclusus gestiscono anche un asilo ad Artas, sempre nel Governatorato di Betlemme, a cui sono state donate attrezzatura e materiale didattico. Nel convento è stata inoltre realizzata una fattoria didattica.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 33 anziani soli, di cui 28 sono donne.

17 bambini che frequentano l’asilo e la fattoria didattica.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA CASA DEL FANCIULLO DI BETLEMME

Si è attivato al Dar al Majus per i bambini della Casa del Fanciullo un corso di lingua italiana e spagnola e delle attività di sostegno psicosociale per fare fronte ai continui traumi a cui sono sottoposti. Da quest’anno le attività di sostegno psicologico sono rivolte anche ai social workers e alle famiglie dei bambini.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 24 bambini dagli 8 ai 17 orfani o con famiglie socialmente svantaggiate con problemi di dipendenze e/o violenza; 20 famiglie; 8 caregivers e social workers.

§ SUPPORTO ALL’ISTITUTO PER SORDI EFFETÀ DI BETLEMME

Si sostenne la scuola con la partecipazione al pagamento di alcune rette per alcuni ragazzi provenienti dai villaggi più poveri e con il sostegno all’acquisto di ricambi per apparecchi acustici. La maggior parte degli studenti, infatti, non riesce a coprire i costi della retta annuale, pur essendo molto bassa. E’ iniziato anche un nuovo progetto di formazionale sulla gestione del trauma a famiglie e insegnanti.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 200 studenti audiolesi dai 2 ai 18 anni hanno accesso a un ambulatorio medico fornito per le loro esigenze

§ SUPPORTO ALLA CATHOLIC ACTION DI BETLEMME

Contributo alla riabilitazione del tetto del campo da basket e delle sale aggregative interne dell’azione Cattolica. Inoltre, sostiene l’Azione Cattolica attraverso il programma di orientamento al lavoro.

§ SUPPORTO A SCUOLE E OPERE EDUCATIVE - BETLEMME

Attraverso il sostegno a distanza viene garantita l’istruzione di alcuni bambini che frequentano le Scuole di Terra Santa (Saint Joseph e Terra Sancta College), Rosary Sisters School e SIRA School. Inoltre, sono state supportate alcune famiglie per il pagamento delle rette scolastiche o universitarie. Sono state attività didattiche sul patrimonio culturale in tre scuole secondarie di Betlemme e in tre scuole secondarie di Hebron rivolte a un totale di 12 classi. Nel villaggio di Artas è stata realizzata una Fattoria Didattica all’interno del Convento delle Suore dell’Hortus Conclusus.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 250 bambini di età compresa tra i 3 e i 17 sono stati sostenuti nel proseguimento dei propri studi.

205 studenti delle scuole secondarie di Hebron hanno beneficiato di due incontri in aula e una visita guidata.

160 studenti delle scuole secondarie di Betlemme hanno beneficiato di due incontri in aula e una visita guidata.

17 bambini di Artas e Al Khader svolgono attività educative all’interno della fattoria didattica.

§ SUPPORTO ALL’ASSOCIAZIONE “CI MUOVIAMO SULLA VIA DELLA CARITÀ” DI BETLEMME

Sono stati acquistati e inviati vestiti e prodotti di prima necessità e prodotti igienici (come pannolini, assorbenti e prodotti per la cura della persona) e sacchi di riso e farina.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 150 famiglie aiutate e supportate all’interno dei campi profughi di Gaza.

§ CENTRO DI ASCOLTO E DI ORIENTAMENTO AL LAVORO - BETLEMME

È attivo a Betlemme un centro di ascolto e orientamento al lavoro per fornire assistenza medica (accesso a cure mediche di base, operazioni e ricoveri ospedalieri e trattamenti medici specifici) e sociale alla popolazione più vulnerabile dell’area in collaborazione con altre organizzazioni che fanno parte del suo network. Il centro di ascolto impiega un assistente sociale senior e uno junior e le richieste di assistenza vengono valutate mensilmente da un comitato predisposto di cui fa parte anche un membro esterno all’organizzazione.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 444 persone si sono recate al centro di ascolto e sono state accolte e prese in carico dal personale di ProTSo sono state riferite da organizzazioni parte del network.

200 persone hanno beneficiato di sostegno per assistenza medica o sociale.

25 giovani hanno partecipato a vocational training e 27 giovani sono stati sostenuti attraverso il programma di orientamento al lavoro, in collaborazione con 15 istituzioni religiose e non e piccole medie imprese.

15 giovani hanno beneficiato di attività di sostegno psicologico di gruppo attraverso il teatro.

6 istituzioni religiose supportate (Scouts, Elderly Center di Bet Jala, etc.).

§ EMERGENZA CASE E ACQUA - BETLEMME

Sempre attraverso il centro di ascolto vengono accolte le richieste per interventi di riabilitazione di abitazioni danneggiate e insalubri, così come installazione water tanks e pannelli solari.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 16 famiglie hanno beneficiato di interventi di ristrutturazione e messa in sicurezza delle loro abitazioni.

64 famiglie hanno beneficiati dell’installazione di water tanks e pannelli solari.

72 famiglie visitate dal nostro staff in quanto per la prima volta si recavano presso il centro d’ascolto.

§ ATTIVITÀ SOCIO/IMPRENDITORIALI - BETLEMME

A Betlemme si gestisce due Guesthouse (Dar al Majus e Dar Essideh) entrambe nel centro storico. Inoltre, è attivo un bazaar equo e solidale che conta una rete di oltre 30 fornitori che sono principalmente organizzazioni che garantiscono un lavoro a donne vulnerabili o persone con disabilità.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 34 realtà micro-imprenditoriali e istituzioni supportate attraverso la vendita dei loro prodotti.

§ DAMJ CREATIVE LAB - BETLEMME

Presso i vecchi uffici si è attivato un laboratorio creativo che supporta alcune piccole realtà imprenditoriali nello sviluppo dei prodotti e dell’identità di brand e del logo. Inoltre, sostiene le istituzioni e le opere che vogliono sviluppare delle produzioni per favorire la sostenibilità.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 9 istituzioni sono state supportate nello sviluppo del proprio business e di nuovi prodotti (es. Effetà).

6 donne di Gaza sono state supportate nello sviluppo di una propria linea di prodotti.

2 artisti di Gaza hanno tenuto workshops indirizzati ai fornitori del Bazar a cui hanno partecipato circa 30 persone (ricamo e arte calligrafica).

§ DAR AL MAJUS COMMUNITY CENTRE - BETLEMME

Presso Dar Al Majus e in collaborazione con altre realtà locali, si organizza attività culturali rivolte alla comunità di Betlemme di vario tipo: rassegne letterarie, laboratori di scrittura, concerti, workshop di cucina, performance teatrali etc.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 670 membri della comunità locale che hanno preso parte alle attività e agli eventi culturali.

Circa 256 bambini che hanno preso parte ad attività culturali e workshops.

20 organizzazioni e artisti partner degli eventi e delle attività organizzate (es. Bethlehem Accademy of Music, Bab Eddir Gallery, OpenMic, Alliance Francaise, Diyar Theatre group, Willy Brandt center, Mosaic Centre, SOS Villaggio Bambini, Piccirillo Centre, etc,).

§ INSEGNAMENTO ITALIANO E LATINO A SEMINARISTI E ASPIRANTI FRATI - BETLEMME

Si è messo a disposizione dei volontari per l’insegnamento dell’italiano e del latino ad alcuni seminaristi del Seminario di Beit Jala e ad alcuni aspiranti frati della Custodia.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 6 seminaristi; 6 aspiranti frati.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA PARROCCHIA LATINA DI GAZA

Si sostiene la parrocchia latina di Gaza City offrendo supporto per le attività parrocchiali e le necessità della comunità.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 135 persone che fanno parte della comunità della Parrocchia Latina di Gaza

600 persone sfollante all’interno della Parrocchia dall’inizio della guerra.

§ SUPPORTO ALL’ASSOCIAZIONE “ATFA-LUNA” DI GAZA

In collaborazione con Associazione “Atfa-Luna” di Gaza si stanno supportando attività di supporto PSS a circa 1.000 bambini e 300 adulti, inclusi bambini con disabilità, in due campi profughi informali di Gaza: a Rafah e a Dier Al-Balah, attraverso sessioni di sensibilizzazione e distribuzione di emergency kits per circa 1.000 persone e aiuti sociali a ca. 180 famiglie di persone con disabilità. Inoltre, si sta affiancando l’associazione nell’attivazione di alcuni learning points temporanei all’interno dei campi profughi con l’obiettivo di garantire un’istruzione inclusiva per 100 bambini con e senza disabilità.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 1.000 bambini e 300 adulti.

§ COLLABORAZIONE CON LA CARITAS DI GERUSALEMME A GAZA

Attraverso il “Gaza Emergency Appeal 2024” lanciato a inizio 2024, si è contribuito ad aiutare attraverso:

ü Distribuzioni di cibo e beni di prima necessità, attraverso invii diretti nei corridoi e acquisti diretti a Gaza.

ü Distribuzione di Multiple Purchase Cash Assistance (MPCA).

ü Distribuzione di medicinali essenziali e programmi di sensibilizzazione.

Inoltre, ProTS ha collaborato sul progetto “Humanitarian Aid for vulnerable people in the Gaza Strip protecting historical, archaeological, cultural and religious heritage in danger.” La collaborazione ha avuto come obiettivo quello di sostenere economicamente per i prossimi 6 mesi 35 individui impegnati nella protezione e nella salvaguardia del patrimonio culturale, storico, archeologico e religioso della Striscia di Gaza.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 100 famiglie di Gaza.

35 individui con le rispettive famiglie provenienti dal settore culturale e dislocati per tutta la Striscia di Gaza.

§ SUPPORTO AL TERRA SANTA COLLEGE DI NAZARETH

Il Ministero dell’Educazione israeliano ha stabilito che tutte le scuole devono possedere un bunker sicuro per proteggere tutti gli studenti, gli insegnanti e i lavoratori della scuola. Purtroppo, il bunker al Terra Santa College di Nazareth non soddisfaceva le norme di sicurezza e gli studenti sono impossibilitati a frequentare la scuola, seguendo le lezioni da remoto. Si è deciso di supportare finanziariamente il Terra Santa College sostenendo le spese per la messa in sicurezza del bunker.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 600 ragazzi e 40 membri dello staff.

§ SUPPORTO ALLA BASILICA DELL’ANNUNCIAZIONE DI NAZARETH

Il progetto prevede un intervento tecnico di consolidamento strutturale del porticato inferiore.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 13 residenti del Convento e tutta la popolazione cristiana della città di Nazareth.

1. GRECIA

• Supporto a profughi e rifugiati - Rodi

Si aiuta a distribuire generi di prima necessità (cibo e medicinali) ai profughi provenienti da Siria, Iraq e Afghanistan.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Fino a 800 pacchi distribuiti a settimana.

Un totale di ca. 2.000 famiglie assistite durante l’anno.

1. GIORDANIA

• Educazione e assistenza primaria – Amman, Anjara

Realizzazione di attività educative volte a favorire l’accesso di bambini provenienti da famiglie vulnerabili ad un’istruzione di qualità in varie aree geografiche del paese, attraverso la copertura delle tasse scolastiche, dei costi di trasporto e la fornitura di cancelleria.

Infine, si è raggiunto 50 famiglie vulnerabili, tramite la cooperazione con il Ministero dello Sviluppo Sociale, realizzando attività di cash assistance.

Beneficiari raggiunti

260 alunni dai 4 ai 18 anni, attraverso la cooperazione con 30 scuole ed istituzioni in diverse aree geografiche del paese;

50 famiglie povere sostenute con aiuto sociale.

• Supporto alle opere educative – Amman, Anjar

Le attività educative sono state realizzate attraverso il supporto ad una rete di istituzioni e scuole presenti nel paese, in particolare:

ü Francescani: il collegio della Terra Santa e la scuola delle Suore Francescane di Amman sono state destinatarie del supporto.

ü Vicariato Greco-Cattolico Melchita ad Amman: 9 scuole, tra cui quelle gestite dalle Suore Melchite;

ü Patriarcato Latino ad Amman: 10 scuole hanno beneficiato di questa opportunità;

ü Hopes Fund: 6 scuole raggiunte (Latine, Greco-Cattoliche e Mar Yousef);

ü Scuola Latina di Marka: un numero di bambini iracheni (rifugiati) ha beneficiato di questo supporto.

ü Inoltre, ProTS ha sostenuto la missione delle Suore di Anjara della Casa “Mary Our Lady of the Mountain”, coprendo i costi delle lezioni di recupero in diverse materie per i bambini ospitati nella struttura.

• Heritage Education Program – Amman, Madaba, Irbid

Descrizione Progetto

Si è avviato un progetto che ha l’obiettivo di promuovere la tutela del patrimonio culturale giordano, con particolare attenzione ai monumenti e ai siti archeologici appartenenti alla cultura cristiana, attraverso il coinvolgimento di scuole ed istituzioni locali, come l’Università Al Yarmouk e il Jordan Museum di Amman.

Nell’ambito del progetto, è stato quindi strutturato un Programma di Educazione al Patrimonio destinato alle scuole locali e alle famiglie.

Beneficiari raggiunti

2 studenti e 6 studentesse formati/e sulle materie inerenti al restauro del patrimonio culturale, attraverso la cooperazione con istituzioni locali;

12 alunni del Terra Santa College di Amman hanno partecipato alle visite guidate dedicate al patrimonio culturale.

1. LIBANO

• Centro di assistenza e sviluppo - Beirut

Il social/emergency center di ProTS ha l’obiettivo di aiutare famiglie povere libanesi provenienti dalle città di Beirut e periferia, Harissa, Tiro, Tripoli, Deir Mimas, Adonis, in coordinamento con i frati francescani locali.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 1.200 beneficiari raggiunti dalle distribuzioni e beni di prima necessità (kit igienici e generi alimentari).

1.240 bambini e 330 anziani sono stati supportati attraverso la distribuzione di latte in polvere e di pannoloni.

400 persone aiutate con medicine e copertura di spese mediche.

270 borse di studio per studenti bisognosi nell’area di Beirut e Harissa.

21 famiglie ogni mese sono state supportate tramite la copertura dei costi di affitto e di elettricità (funzionamento dei generatori).

• Franciscan Care Center - Beirut

Il centro di arte-terapia per riabilitazione psicologica rivolto ai bambini, denominato Franciscan Care Center, è in funzione anche a Beirut, nel centro di PTS Libano a Gemmaizeh, dove sono previsti corsi di arte-terapia, musico-terapia, PSS individuale, supporto psicomotore.

Beneficiari raggiunti

120 tra bambini, giovani e anziani partecipano alle attività proposte.

8 persone locali specializzate coinvolte (educatori, insegnanti, psicologi, allenatori, artisti).

• WIP – Work in Progress – Sviluppo imprenditoria - Beirut

Selezione, formazione e supporto a giovani libanesi con idee imprenditoriali e di business, con accompagnamento e formazione da parte di coaches e tutors italiani e libanesi, con una community totale di ca. 25 persone.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 10 giovani formati sul tema business-startup e aiutati direttamente con loan e grants per far partire le loro attività commerciali e imprenditoriali-sociali. Dall’inizio del programma WIP nel 2022, circa 100 giovani hanno frequentato le attività di formazione proposte nell’ambito imprenditoriale e 30 un supporto diretto per far partire e crescere la propria attività.

• Centro di assistenza e Dispensario medico - Tripoli

All’interno del complesso del convento di Tripoli, diversi locali sono stati rinnovati e adibiti a dispensario medico, attivi tre giorni alla settimana con dottori specializzati (inclusi pediatra e ginecologo) e distribuzione di medicine.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 400 persone e bambini ricevuti e aiutati ogni mese, tramite visite mediche nonché distribuzioni di medicinali e vaccini.

Una nuova stanza di Ginecologia è stata attivata presso il Dispensario.

• Centro Culturale e Sportivo San Francesco - Tripoli

Presso il convento di San Francesco, a Tripoli, è presente un ampio centro sportivo composto da: un campo da calcio, un campo da basket, un’area parco-giochi, stanza per il giudo e la danza, stanza dedicata al ping-pong. Il centro sportivo è di grande importanza nel quartiere e viene attualmente frequentato da bambini e ragazzi cristiani e musulmani, provenienti da famiglie libanesi, siriane e palestinesi. Si continua a sostenere il miglioramento del centro e l’organizzazione di tornei/corsi sportivi.

Sono state inoltre sistemate 4 sale nuove del complesso esterno del convento, per la creazione della sala della musica (corsi di formazione musicale e banda dei giovani), la sala dell’arte e del ballo.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 300 bambini /giovani provenienti da famiglie povere libanesi e di rifugiati palestinesi/siriani hanno usufruito, quando possibile, dei campi e degli allenamenti proposti dal centro, ovvero calcio, basket, palestra, giudo, danza e ping-pong.

40 bambini coinvolti nei corsi di musica e nella banda.

35 bambini coinvolti nei progetti artistici e culturali.

• Supporto a opere educative - Tripoli

In collaborazione con scuole locali (Tripoli, Adonis, Carmelitani, Gbaleh, Menjez) sono state istituite borse di studio durante l’anno a supporto degli studenti e famiglie più bisognose.

In collaborazione con una maestra di arte, è stato realizzato un ciclo di corsi di arte e disegno.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 120 borse di studio per i bambini e famiglie più bisognose.

• Attività di dopo-scuola per bambini - Tiro

All’interno del complesso del convento di Tiro, sono state realizzate attività di distribuzioni di aiuti alimentari, medicine, accoglienza, ma anche di educazione per bambini.

Beneficiari raggiunti: 25 bambini aiutati con percorsi di dopo-scuola.

• Emergenza guerra

ProTS è attiva dal 25 settembre 2024, immediatamente dopo lo scoppio della guerra nel paese, per aiutare gli sfollati accolti in alcune scuole pubbliche adibite a rifugi. In particolare, ProTS è intervenuta nella regione di Metn (scuola pubblica di Beit Chabab), nella regione di Keserwan (scuola francescana di Adonis), a Jbeil (scuola pubblica di Jbeil) e ha collaborato strettamente con il Convento Francescano di Tiro (sud) – dove 90 persone sono state accolte nei primi giorni della guerra.

Sono state realizzate le seguenti attività di distribuzione di beni essenziali:

ü Pasti caldi per circa 500 beneficiari raggiunti ogni giorno – Jbeil e Metn

ü Acqua potabile per circa 250 persone ogni giorno – Jbeil e Metn

ü Farmaci (vitamine e farmaci per malattie croniche) per un totale di 300 beneficiari (250 a Metn e 50 a Jbeil)

ü Vaccini per bambini, per un totale di 80 bambini (55 a Metn e 25 a Jbeil)

ü Latte e pannolini per 120 bambini assistiti ogni giorno – Jbeil, Metn, Adonis

ü Circa 300 tra persone e bambini ospitati nei centri sono stati coinvolti nelle attività di supporto psicosociale, tramite il lavoro delle psicologhe e degli educatori di ProTS.

Infine, ProTS ha aiutato i conventi dei Frati Francescani di Beirut (Gemmayze) e Harissa, dove al momento sono ospitate circa 30 persone, attraverso la copertura dei costi di alloggio (coperte, materassi, vestiti). Purtroppo, il supporto al convento di Tiro è stato sospeso a causa della pericolosità della situazione che impedisce ai frati di continuare le attività di accoglienza.

1. EGITTO

• Conservazione valorizzazione del Musky - Cairo

Sostegno al Centro Francescano di Studi Orientali Cristiani per rinnovare la struttura e studiare/catalogare le collezioni, e supporto all’organizzazione di eventi per coinvolgere la comunità locale, in particolare studenti universitari del Cairo. Lo scopo principale del Centro è lo sviluppo delle scienze orientali riguardanti le comunità cristiane del Medio Oriente e la documentazione sulla vita e la storia dei Francescani in Terra Santa.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 200 studenti visitatori del centro supportati per i loro studi e ricerche, vengono loro offerti anche corsi di base di latino, greco e italiano.

3 ragazzi coinvolti nelle attività del centro, tramite attività di ricerca e dottorato.

• Aiuto ai poveri e educazione giovani - Cairo

Distribuzione di cibo e medicinali e sostegno dei poveri del quartiere del Musky Cairo, dove sorge il convento Francescano della Custodia di Terra Santa. Inoltre, in partnership con le suore francescane del CIM presso le loro opere a Porto Said, Alessandria, EL Dhahereya, Assiut, Minya, Towirat, Qena, DeirDronka, Kafr el Dawar, Haram, sono state attivati aiuti di carattere educativo, come pagamento rette perbambini ospitati in orfanotrofi, spese mediche per famiglie, spese per beni essenziali. Aiuto anche alle giovani coppie.

Beneficiari raggiunti: Circa 40 bambini e giovani sostenuti nel quartiere del Musky.

Circa 850 donne, persone in condizioni economiche fragilim, studenti e bambini, raggiunti attraverso le opere supportate.

• Progetto di aiuto alle famiglie vulnerabili di persone detenute – Abu Qurqas

Servizio di accompagnamento rivolto a 66 detenuti provenienti da famiglie vulnerabili di Abu Qurqas. Le attività supportate riguardano l’accompagnamento in ambito legale, psicologico ed educativo (quest’ultimo per i figli dei detenuti, attraverso il pagamento delle quote per la partecipazione ai campi estivi e tasse scolastiche).

Beneficiari raggiunti: 66 detenuti e le loro famiglie di Abu Qurqas.

Supporto ai novizi della custodia di terra santa, attraverso pagamento di vitto e alloggio, assicurazione sanitaria e spese mediche, permessi di soggiorno per cittadini extra UE.

1. Stipendi ordinari della Custodia di Terra Santa

La Custodia di Terra Santa (CTS) conta un totale di 1465 dipendenti. Di questi, 955 lavorano direttamente nelle diverse opere e scuole situate in Israele e nei Territori Palestinesi. Il Dipartimento HR supervisiona in modo diretto 60 di queste opere, mentre le scuole sono gestite dall'Ufficio Centrale delle Scuole Terra Santa. Il restante personale (510 dipendenti) è impiegato in strutture e istituzioni della CTS situate al di fuori della Terra Santa.

Le opere della CTS gestite dal Dipartimento HR affrontano sfide significative a causa della guerra in corso. Nonostante la perdita di 46 dipendenti, per dimissioni o licenziamenti dall’inizio della guerra, queste opere continuano a operare con un organico di 344 persone, distribuite tra i Territori Palestinesi (82 dipendenti) e Israele (262 dipendenti, dei quali 63 titolari di carta d’identità Palestinese con permessi di lavoro speciali).

Summary Report 2023/2024

The Custody of the Holy Land has committed itself for many centuries in conserving and revitalising of the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and in the entire Middle East. Among the various objectives of the Franciscan mission are the support and development of the Christian minority which lives in these countries, the conservation and valorisation of the archaeological areas and sanctuaries, the intervention in cases of emergency, the liturgy in the places of cult, the apostolic works and the assistance of pilgrims. Also during 2023/2024 the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land has been manifested through the projection, programming and execution of the following projects and works:

The works listed above have been realised thanks to various kinds of economic contributions, in the first place thanks to the Good Friday Collection, as well as through the fundraising activities of the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) and of the Association Pro Terra Sancta (PTS), but also through other private and institutional donators.

One year after the beginning of the war which is still wounding this land, the economic entries which come from the same region, from parishes, sanctuaries, pilgrims, etc., have been reduced to a minimum, and with this many other projects have had to be redimensioned, slowed down, suspended or cancelled, in order to try to give priority to those issues which directly touch persons in need. We have to face new challenges and also to reflect on how to proceed, while knowing that we are not alone if we let ourselves be guided by divine Providence.

WORKS IN FAVOUR OF PILGRIMS

Acre: building of the ex-kindergarten

§ Planning phase of the interventions of restructuring of the “Kindergarten” building, in view of making once more habitable the apartment in which the sisters who directed this work used to live.

Acre: friary of Saint Francis

§ Ongoing study for the interventions of restoration of the windows and façades in order to solve problems of infiltration of humidity.

§ Completion of works of extraordinary maintenance of the bell tower.

Ain Karem: Sanctuary of Saint John the Baptist

§ Completion of the works of security of the electrical system of the building, which comprises the friary, church and seminary. The electrical potency has been adjusted to the present needs of the building.

§ Completion of the works of restructuring of the friary kitchen.

§ Completion of the works of maintenance of the rooms of the seminary.

§ Still in the phase of planning are the works of excavation/restoration of the church.

Ain Karem: Casanova

§ Completion of the works of securing the electrical system of the Casanova for the welcoming of pilgrims. The electrical potency has been adjusted to the present needs of the building.

Ain Karem: Sanctuary of Saint John in the Desert

§ In course of realisation of the urgent interventions for the conservation of the sanctuary, on the basis of a masterplan that comprises the regulation of rain water in the area surrounding the friary.

§ Completion of the first interventions of the reparation of the principal water system.

§ Completion of the installation of the security frames of the windows of the convent of the sisters.

§ Ongoing study of the details for the renewal of the principal water system.

Ain Karem: Sanctuary of the Visitation

§ Completion of the works of installation of a new bell.

§ Continuing intervention of maintenance for the conservation of the sanctuary.

§ Continuing evaluation of the interventions of adjustment of the friary lift.

Beit Sahour: Sanctuary of the Shepherds Field

§ Definition of a masterplan of interventions for the conservation and the development of the site, which comprises new internal and external chapels, the restoration of the grotto of the shepherds, new lavatories and infrastructures.

§ Completion of the works of realisation of three of the five internal chapels for the celebrations of pilgrims (the Croatian, Spanish and Arabic chapels).

§ Completion of the works of realisation of the first among the external chapels (chapel of Guadalupe).

§ Completion of the essential works of adjusting of the areas surrounding the new chapels.

§ In course of evaluation is the implementation of the successive phases of the project, which foresee another two internal chapels, four external chapels, the renewal of the sacristy, the completion of the external arrangements, the restoration of the grotto, the layout of the archaeological zone in collaboration with the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology (PIAC) and the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF).

Bethany: Sanctuary of the House of Martha, Mary and Lazarus

§ Completion of the restoration and evaluation of the Byzantine and Mediaeval remains of the friary of Bethany through the retrieval of the degraded areas.

§ Completion of the study for the renewal of the internal illumination of the church.

Bethlehem: Friary of Santa Caterina

§ In progress are the works for the changing of the friary lift in order to adjust it to security norms.

§ Completion of the works of installation of solar panels for the production of electricity.

Betehlehem: Boys Home

§ Completion of the reconstruction of 5 lavatories to serve the complex.

§ Completion of the proposal of arrangement of the garden of the property.

§ Completion of the preliminary proposal to convert the ex-convent of the Missionaries of Mary into a retreat house.

Bethlehem: Catholic Action

§ Continuation of the works of planning for the rehabilitation and valorisation of the centre of the Catholic Action in Bethlehem, an area covering 9.000 m², open for the local community, and endowed with external and internal play spaces for children, with a recreational hall for elderly people, a hall for feasts, a cinema, a sports centre with gym and internal basket-ball court, outdoor swimming pool, etc.

§ Completion of the works of renewal of the flooring of the large square and with the relative facilities.

§ Completion of the maintenance works of the domestic water system and rehabilitation of the ancient cisterns.

Cana: Friary of the First Miracle

§ Completion of the working of construction of the new building destined for the school. The complex comprises the parish centre and a covered parking lot for a total area of 5.000m². Planning of the final phases of the connection to the electricity service and testing of the systems.

§ Completion of the works of renewal of the automation of the church bells.

Emmaus Qubeibeh: Sanctuary of Saints Simon and Cleophas

§ Completion of the works of extraordinary maintenance of the roof structures in view of waterproofing of the church.

§ Completion of works of restructuring of part of the Casa Nova, planned to become a small convent for the sisters who will collaborate in the welcoming of pilgrims.

§ Completion of interventions of maintenance of the terrace roof which links the Church to the sacristy.

§ Ongoing study for the recovery of areas as lodgings for volunteers who come to offer service in favour of pilgrims.

§ Ongoing study for the upgrading of the capacity of electrical power supply on the art of the public electrical firm.

§ Ongoing evaluation of the construction of a new and more efficient adduction system of water which responds to contemporary needs. The present pumping station goes back to the 1960s, and in case of a breakdown it would leave the whole complex of Mount Tabor without a supply of drinking water.

§ Ongoing study for the renewal of the external buildings which are currently in disuse.

NB: In the realisation of these works, although having to face a factor of complication in view of the permits which have to be requested, we have preferred the employment of a work force coming from the West Bank in order to offer work for Christians living in a territory which does not benefit from social welfare or from social security, and who in these last years, owing to the situation of conflict and various lockdowns, would have remained totally deprived of economic resources.

Ulterior complications have arisen during the recent conflict, which has brought periods of total closure of checkpoints after the beginning of the hostilities, first for a period of nearly two months, and then intermittently. Wherever possible, the workers have been employed in the sanctuaries and in the friaries of the West Bank.

Aid for families

In Bethlehem and in Jerusalem, on various occasions, financial aid has been provided in order to meet the health expenses of families, as well as for the purchase of daily basic necessities. This is done through the parishes.

Apartments for persons in need and young couples

The Custody of the Holy Land has in property a numerous number of houses, which are rented out to their tenants with a symbolic sum. In general, these are found in overcrowded areas, where different family groups often live together in small apartments. Each year the Custody intervenes to improve the conditions in these houses, while at the same time it tries to build other houses in order to support the local community.

Here follow the houses in which works have been carried out in 2023-2024:

- extraordinary maintenance and interventions of emergency in numerous houses.

Cultural Works

§ STUDIUM BIBLICUM FRANCISCANUM (SBF) – JERUSALEM

- Every year the Custody of the Holy Land offers economic support to the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem.

- Formation of 64 students in biblical sciences at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, coming from various areas of the world and from poor religious provinces and dioceses, to whom the Custody guarantees food and lodging and a scholarship. They will be destined for teaching Holy Scripture in various countries in the world. At this point in time there are 36 students for the Masters’ degree, 11 for the Doctorate, 4 for the Diploma in Biblical Formation, 2 extraordinary students and 11 audit students.

§ CHRISTIAN MEDIA CENTER (CMC) – JERUSALEM/NAZARETH

The services offered comprise:

- Website.

- Terra Santa News, a weekly news bulletin on faith, history and contemporary events in the Holy Land; transmitted by roughly 35 broadcasting institutions in 10 languages.

- Documentaries on social and religious themes.

- Live-streaming of liturgical celebrations and events.

§ INSTITUTE OF MUSIC MAGNIFICAT – JERUSALEM

- The Magnificat Institute is affiliated to the Conservatory of Vicenza. The Magnificat promotes activities of research and cultural manifestations on the local and international level.

- It welcomes around 240 Christian, Muslim and Jewish students, under the direction of around 30 teachers, who are also Jewish, Christian and Muslim.

§ WELCOMING OF YOUNG SEMINARIANS – JERUSALEM

- Welcoming in the Franciscan International Seminary of Saint Saviour in Jerusalem.

- Welcoming in the Seminary of Ain Karem.

§ FORMATION OF YOUNG SEMINARIANS – JERUSALEM

§ TERRA SANCTA MUSEUM: HERITAGE EDUCATION HUB FOR PALESTINIAN YOUTH - JERUSALEM

In September 2024 the second phase of this project was launched, with the aim of continuing to expand the educational and cultural activities linked with the archaeological collection of the Terra Sancta Museum and addressed to the students of the schools of East Jerusalem, to families and to the entire local Palestinian Christian population. The project includes activities realised not only in the spaces of the archaeological section of the Terra Sancta Museum, but also in the premises of Dar El-Consul and Musa Efendi.

Beneficiaries reached: 180 infants and children of East Jerusalem benefit from the socio-educational activities and on the cultural patrimony.

§ PSS FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS - JERUSALEM

In collaboration with the Sparfford Children’s Center we have discovered the necessity to activate an integrated programme of protection of treatment of trauma; it includes a psycho-social support and management of anger and stress for children, young people and parents. Sessions for treating trauma and handling of anger and stress have been realised within the centre and in the ambit of some schools of East Jerusalem. Summer camps have also been organised.

Beneficiaries reached: Around 400 children and around 250 persons among adults, caregivers and staff.

§ SUPPORT TO MAGNIFICAT INSTITUTE OF MUSIC OF JERUSALEM

Support to the activities of Magnificat, offering the possibility to frequent courses and lessons also in the most vulnerable and less well-off strata of the population of Jerusalem, financing the distribution of scholarships.

Beneficiaries reached: Around 190 children.

§ SUPPORT TO THE CONVENT OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL OF JERUSALEM

In 2019 some areas which lay abandoned in the interior of the Convent were restored, and the Dar Mamilla Guesthouse opened, with the objective not only of hosting visitors from all over the world, but also to help in the work of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. Also for 2024, a part of the entries of Dar Mamilla Guesthouse has been devolved to support their activities.

Beneficiaries reaches: around 200 children from three months to four years of age.

Around 30 persons with physical disabilities and/or psychic disorders.

4 sisters and 74 members of the staff of the Convent of Saint Vincent de Paul.

§ SUPPORT TO THE GREEK CATHOLIC ANNUNCIATION SOCIETY OF JERUSALEM

Support of the centre, through the realisation of a summer programme dedicated to children/and to strengthen and enrich their abilities and competences, in a healthy and secure environment which favours learning, personal growth and the sense of responsibility towards the community. The educational activities aimed at children have as their objective the development of their practical abilities, the strengthening of their creativity and imagination, the promotion of their communication, collaboration and working as a group, through the realisation of specific laboratories.

Beneficiaries reached: around 50 children and their respective families.

§ SUPPORT TO SAINT JOSEPH HOSPITAL - JERUSALEM

Financial support of St. Joseph Hospital in order to acquire 53 wheel-chairs for patients in the hospital. The Saint Joseph Hospital is the only Catholic hospital of East Jerusalem; it serves around 50.000 persons every year, coming from the population of East Jerusalem, from the West Bank and, in the most serious cases, also from Gaza.

Beneficiaries reached: around 1.500 patients every month who can make use of the wheel-chairs.

§ SUPPORT TO SAINT LOUIS FRENCH HOSPITAL OF JERUSALEM

A contribution for the installation of a new lift in the hospital. Thanks to this it is possible to transport with greater ease stretchers and patients in wheel-chairs. The hospital is specialised in the offering of palliative care to terminal patients with a total capacity of 57 beds, subdivided between the geriatric ward; the complicated geriatric ward; and the oncology ward. The hospital also offers treatment to HIV patients.

Beneficiaries reached: 55 patients.

§ SUPPORT TO THE JERUSALEM AFRICAN COMMUNITY CENTER (JACC)

Support to the activity of JACC, a centre which assists around 3.000 asylum seekers coming from Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia, among whom many families with children, who live in Jerusalem. The centre takes care of activities of legal and psychological support, as well as courses of formation and distribution of basic necessities for the families most in need.

Beneficiaries reached: around 3.000 members of the community, principally women and children. Around 7 members of the staff and around 100 volunteers and external collaborators.

SUPPORT TO THE FRANCISCAN FRIARY OF SAINT JOHN - AIN KARIM

This project has provided for the refurbishment of the kitchen of the Friary of Saint John, which was found to be in a state of serious need. The kitchen is part of the friary complex, which goes back to 1670, and therefore it necessitated urgent interventions in order to make it respond to legal norms and render it secure and efficient. The project has been concluded and the works for the kitchen and its installations have been terminated.

Beneficiaries reached: around 30 residents of the Friary of Saint John in Ain Karem.

§ PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH EDUCATION AND INCLUSIVITY – JERICHO, SEBASTIA, BETHLEHEM

The project has been realised in partnership with the Mosaic Centre and the Association Tamer Institute for Community Education (with headquarters in Ramallah) in the towns of Bethlehem, Jericho, and in the village of Sebastia. It aims at contributing to the sustainable development of the communities in the Palestinian territories, through awareness of the Palestinian civil society on themes relating to environmental sustainability and inclusivity. In particular, we mention the ongoing implementation of two areas of environmental and cultural education aimed at young people and children in Jericho and Sebastia, as well as various courses of formation carried out by the staff of the Mosaic Centre of Bethlehem, which include two mosaic artists who are impaired in speech and hearing. They have received the services of an expert trainer in order to help them become autonomous in carrying out activities of art-therapy aimed at persons with disability; a course in design in order to improve their artistic competences and a course of LIS in order to improve the communication of the staff of the Mosaic Centre. Other activities foresee the installation of solar panels on the guesthouse of ProTS and on the premises of the Mosaic Centre, in order to improve the economic efficiency, the environmental impact and the accessibility to persons with disability.

Beneficiaries reached: at least 25 persons with disability from the Governorate of Bethlehem.

At least 150 children from Jericho and Sebastia.

§ SPORTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE - SEBASTIA

The community of Sebastia, especially the younger age group of the population, continues to live a situation of extreme uncertainty and vulnerability as a result of the current war in Gaza and the increasing violence of Israeli settlers who live in colonies around the village. In this context, we have offered to young people the possibility to dedicate themselves to recreational and educational activities, in order to continue hoping in a future in which dialogue and coexistence would still be possible. The project has been realised from May to December 2024, in partnership with the Mosaic Centre, and it has been organised a course of football training with the preparation of young people who can participate in sports competitions.

Beneficiaries reached: around 70 young people from the villages of Sebastia, Nisf Jubeil and surroundings.

§ HOUSE OF FRIENDSHIP - BETHANY

The project foresees the formation and conservation of cultural patrimony, to serve academic institutions and Palestinian communities: it is financed by the Cooperazione Italiana (AICS), in partnership with the Mosaic Centre, Al Quds University, the Università degli Studi di Palermo and the Università di Torino. The project has the objective of contributing to the protection and safeguarding of the cultural patrimony of Bethany in order to favour inclusive social and economic development which promotes culture, sustainable tourism and the local products.

Beneficiaries reaches: around 250 children from Bethany who are involved in educational activities (guided visits and artistic workshops) and in experimental archaeology.

Around 170 young people from Bethany and surroundings, involved in guided tours.

33 students from Al Quds University have participated in specific formation, 7 have enrolled in a new doctoral course for technicians/restorers.

Around 10 workers from Bethany have been involved in the activity of restoration.

60 young people and women have participated in a workshop on the production of perfumed candles, while 4 women from Bethany have started to produce the candles.

6 Beduin women from the community of Jabal al Baba have been involved in the cultivation of za’atar and lavender in a portion of rehabilitated land.

§ SUPPORT TO THE HOGAR NIÑO DIOS OF BETHLEHEM

In collaboration with the religious of the Incarnate Word we have just concluded a project for the security of the new house in which the eldest guests will be transferred and welcomed, and a project for installing solar panels. Within the context of the project of orientation to work the figure of a hydro-therapist has also been included. Besides, Pro TS has offered the services of a volunteer in favour of this initiative for a further period of 9 months.

Beneficiaries reached: 38 children with disability from 2 to 18 years.

§ SUPPORT TO THE CHARITABLE SOCIETY ANTONIANA AND TO THE SISTERS OF “HORTUS CONCLUSUS” OF BETHLEHEM

The collaboration consists in carrying out works of restructuring and improvement of the institutes, support to the staff through training, providing medicines and instruments of work, and supporting current expenditures. In this situation of emergency, the Day Centre has been revived, thanks to which around 33 elderly persons (not only those residing in the Società Antoniana) have the possibility to receive a hot meal and to participate in aggregative activities. The Sisters of Hortus Conclusus also administer a kindergarten at Artas, always in the Governorate of Bethlehem, to which have been donated equipment and didactic material. In the convent an educational farm has also been realised.

Beneficiaries reached: 33 elderly persons who live alone, of whom 28 are women.

17 children who attend the kindergarten and the educational farm.

§ SUPPORT TO THE BOYS HOME OF BETHLEHEM

From Dar al Majus a course of Italian and Spanish languages has been organised for the kids of the Boys Home, together with activities of psycho-social support in order to face the continual traumas to which these children are exposed. From this year the activities of psychological support have also been aimed at the social workers and the families of the children.

Beneficiaries reached: 24 children from 8 to 17 years who are orphans or come from families who live in social disadvantage, or have problems of dependency and/or violence; 20 families; 8 caregivers and social workers.

§ SUPPORT TO THE EFFETÀ INSTITUTE OF BETHLEHEM FOR DEAF CHILDREN

Support of a school with the participation of the payment of some school-fees for some children coming from the poorest villages and with the support for the acquisition of spare parts and hearing aids. The majority of the students, in fact, cannot cover the cost of the annual fees, even though these are very low. A new project for the formation of how to handle trauma has been organised for families and teachers.

Beneficiaries reached: 200 students with hearing impairment from 2 to 18 years have access to a medical clinic equipped for their needs

§ SUPPORT TO THE CATHOLIC ACTION OF BETHLEHEM

Contribution to the rehabilitation of the roof of the basket-ball court and the other aggregate internal halls of the Catholic Action. Besides, the Catholic Action is also supported through a programme of orientation for work.

§ SUPPORT TO SCHOOLS AND EDUCATIONAL WORKS - BETHLEHEM

Through distance support we guarantee the teaching of some children who attend the Terra Santa Schools (Saint Joseph and Terra Sancta College), Rosary Sisters and SIRA School.

Moreover, some families have received support for paying school fees or university fees. Educational activities on the cultural patrimony have been organised in three secondary schools in Bethlehem and in three secondary schools in Hebron aimed at a total of 12 classes. In the village of Artas an Educational Farm has been realised within the Convent of the Sisters of Hortus Conclusus.

Beneficiaries reached: 250 children aged between 3 and 17 years have been supported in the continuation of their studies.

205 students of the secondary schools of Hebron have benefited from two meetings in the class and a guided visit.

160 students of the secondary schools of Bethlehem have benefited from two meetings in the class and a guided visit.

17 children of Artas and Al Khader carry out educational activities within the educational farm.

§ SUPPORT TO THE ASSOCIATION “CI MUOVIAMO SULLA VIA DELLA CARITÀ” OF BETHLEHEM

Clothes, goods of basic necessities and hygienic products (like diapers, absorbents and products for personal care) have been acquired and sent, together with sacks of rice and flour.

Beneficiaries reached: around 150 families have been helped and supported within the refugee camps of Gaza.

§ CENTRE FOR COUNSELLING AND EMPLOYMENT ORIENTATION - BETHLEHEM

In Bethlehem a centre for counselling and employment orientation has been activated in order to provide medical assistance (access to basic medical care, operations and hospitalisation and specific medical treatments) as well as social assistance to the most vulnerable population of the area in collaboration with other organisations which form part of its network. The counselling centre employs a senior and a junior social assistant, and the requests for assistance are evaluated every month by an ad hoc committee in which a member who is outside the organisation takes part.

Beneficiaries reached: 44 persons have been welcomed at the counselling centre and their cases have been handled by the personnel of ProTS and have been referred to other organisations in the same network.

200 persons have benefited from support for medical or social assistance.

25 young people have participated in a vocational training, and 27 young people have been supported through the programme of work orientation, in collaboration with 15 religious institutions as well as small and medium businesses.

15 young people have benefited from activities of psychological support in a group through the theatre.

6 religious institutions have been supported (Scouts, Elderly Centre of Beit Jala, etc.).

§ EMERGENCY HOUSES AND WATER - BETHLEHEM

Through the counselling centre are welcomed requests for interventions of rehabilitation of dwellings which are damaged or unhealthy, as well as requests for installing water tanks and solar panels.

Beneficiaries reached: 16 families have benefited from interventions of restructuring and consolidation of their houses.

64 families have benefited from the installation of water tanks and solar panels.

72 families have been visited by our staff since they have made recourse to the counselling centre for the first time.

§ SOCIO-ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITIES - BETLEMME

In Bethlehem there are two Guesthouses (Dar al Majus and Dar Essideh) both in the historical centre. Besides, a bazaar for fair trade and solidarity has been activated, which operates within a network of 30 producers who are mainly organisations which guarantee work to vulnerable women or persons with disability problems.

Beneficiaries reached: 34 micro-entrepreneurial realities and institutions have been supported by the selling of their products.

§ DAMJ CREATIVE LAB - BETHLEHEM

In the old offices a creative laboratory has been founded which supports some small entrepreneurial realities in the development of products and of the identity of brands and logos. Besides, it also supports institutions and works which want to develop production in order to favour sustainability.

Beneficiaries reached: 9 institutions have been supported in the development of their business and new products (for example, Effetà).

6 women from Gaza have been supported in developing their own line of products.

2 artists from Gaza have organised workshops aimed at the producers of the Bazaar, to which around 30 persons have participated (in embroidery and the art of calligraphy).

§ DAR AL MAJUS COMMUNITY CENTRE - BETHLEHEM

At Dar Al Majus and in collaboration with other social realities are organised cultural activities of various kinds aimed at the community of Bethlehem: literary reviews, laboratories of writing, concert, kitchen workshops, theatre performance, etc.

Beneficiaries reached: around 670 members of the local community who have taken part in the activities and cultural events.

Around 256 children who have taken part in cultural activities and workshops.

20 organisations and artists who are partners to the events and to the activities which are organised (for example, Bethlehem Academy of Music, Bab Eddir Gallery, OpenMic, Alliance Française, Diyar Theatre group, Willy Brandt Centre, Mosaic Centre, SOS Children’s Village, Piccirillo Centre, etc.).

§ TEACHING OF ITALIAN AND LATIN TO SEMINARIANS AND FRIAR ASPIRANTS - BETHLEHEM

Some volunteers are available for the teaching of Italian and Latin to some seminarians of the Seminary of Beit Jala and to some friar aspirants of the Custody.

Beneficiaries reached: 6 seminarians; 6 friar aspirants.

§ SUPPORT TO THE LATIN PARISH IN GAZA

Support to the Latin parish in Gaza City by offering concrete help for parish activities and the needs of the community.

Beneficiaries reached: 135 persons who make part of the community of the Latin Parish of Gaza

600 homeless persons within the Parish since the beginning of the war.

§ SUPPORT TO THE ASSOCIATION “ATFA-LUNA” OF GAZA

In collaboration with the Association “Atfa-Luna” of Gaza some activities of PSS support are being aimed at around 1.000 children and 300 adults, including children with disability issues, in two informal refugee camps in Gaza: in Rafah and in Deir Al-Balah, through sessions of sensitisation of distribution of emergency kits for around 1.000 persons and through social aid to around 180 families with persons suffering from disability problems. Besides, the association is also being available in activating some temporary learning points within the refugee camps with the objective of guaranteeing an inclusive education to 100 kids with or without issues of disability.

Beneficiaries reached: around 1.000 children and 300 adults.

§ COLLABORATION WITH THE CARITAS OF JERUSALEM IN GAZA

Through the “Gaza Emergency Apeal 2024”, launched in the beginning of 2024, help has been provided through:

ü Distribution of food and basic necessities, through direct channels in corridors and direct acquisitions in Gaza.

ü Distribution of Multiple Purchase Cash Assistance (MPCA).

ü Distribution of essential medicines and programmes of sensitisation.

Besides, ProTS has collaborated in the project “Humanitarian Aid for vulnerable people in the Gaza Strip protecting historical, archaeological, cultural and religious heritage in danger.” The collaboration has had as its objective the economic support for the coming 6 months of 35 individuals who are dedicating themselves to the protection and safeguarding of the cultural, historical, archaeological and religious patrimony of the Gaza Strip.

Beneficiaries reached: 100 families of Gaza.

§ SUPPORT TO TERRA SANCTA COLLEGE OF NAZARETH

The Israeli Ministry of Education has established that all schools should have a secure bunker to protect all the students, teachers and employees of the school. Unfortunately, the bunker of Terra Sancta College in Nazareth did not qualify to satisfy the security norms and the students cannot attend the school, but have to follow lessons online. A decision has been taken to give financial support to Terra Sancta College to be able to shoulder the expenses of making the bunker in line with the new security norms.

Beneficiaries reached: around 600 children and 40 members of the staff.

§ SUPPORT TO THE ANNUNCIATION BASILICA OF NAZARETH

The project foresees a technical intervention of structural consolidation of the inferior portico.

Beneficiaries reached: 13 residents of the Friary and all the Christian population of the town of Nazareth.

1. GREECE

• Support to fugitives and refugees – Rhodes

Distribution of basic necessities (food and medicines) to the refugees coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Beneficiaries reached: around 800 packs distributed each week.

A total of roughly 2.000 families have been assisted during the year.

1. JORDAN

• Education and primary assistance – Amman, Anjara

Realisation of educational activities aimed at favouring the access of children coming from vulnerable families to acquire quality education in various geographical areas of the country, through the covering of the cost of school fees, transport costs and the providing of stationery.

Finally, we have reached the number of 50 vulnerable families, through the cooperation with the Ministry for Social Development, by realising activities of cash assistance.

Beneficiaries reached:

260 students from 4 to 18 years, through the cooperation with 30 schools and institutions in various geographical areas of the country;

50 poor families supported with social assistance.

• Support of educational initiatives – Amman, Anjar

The educational activities have been realised through the support of a network of institutions and schools present in the country, in particular:

ü Franciscans: Terra Sancta College and the school of the Franciscan Sisters of Amman have been destined for support.

ü The Greek-Catholic Melkite Vicariate of Amman: 9 schools, among which those administered by the Melkite Sisters;

ü Latin Patriarchate in Amman: 10 schools have benefited from this opportunity;

ü Hopes Fund: 6 schools have been reached (Latin, Greek-Catholic and Mar Yousef);

ü Latin School of Marka: a number of Iraqi children (refugees) have benefited from this support.

ü Besides, ProTS has supported the mission of the Sisters of Anjara of the House “Mary Our Lady of the Mountain”, covering the costs of remedial lessons in various subjects for children who are living in this institution.

• Heritage Education Program – Amman, Madaba, Irbid

Description of the Project

A project has been launched, having as its objective the promotion and care of the Jordanian cultural patrimony, with particular attention to the monuments and archaeological sites pertaining to Christian culture, through the involvement of schools and local institutions, such as Al Yarmouk University and the Jordan Museum of Amman.

Within the context of the project, a Programme for Education to the Patrimony has been structured and is destined for local schools and families.

Beneficiaries reached:

2 male students and 6 female students formed in the subjects connected with the restoration of cultural patrimony, through the cooperation with local institutions;

12 students of Terra Sancta College of Amman have participated in guided visits dedicated to the cultural patrimony.

1. LEBANON

• Centre for assistance and development - Beirut

The social/emergency centre of ProTS has the objective to help poor Lebanese families coming from the city of Beirut and its suburbs, from Harissa, Tyre, Tripoli, Deir Mimas, Adonis, in coordination with the local Franciscan friars.

Beneficiaries reached: 1.200 beneficiaries reached in the distribution of basic necessities (hygienic kits and food).

1.240 children and 330 elderly people have been supported through the distribution of powdered milk and diapers.

400 persons have been helped with medicines and covering of medical expenses.

270 scholarships for needy students in the area of Beirut and Harissa.

21 families each month have been supported through the covering of costs of rent and electricity (for the functioning of generators).

• Franciscan Care Centre - Beirut

The centre for art therapy for psychological rehabilitation is aimed at children, and works under the name Franciscan Care Centre. It functions also in Beirut, in the centre of PTS Lebanon at Gemmaizeh, where there are courses of art therapy and music therapy, individual PSS, psychomotor support.

Beneficiaries reached

120 children, young people and elderly persons participate in the activities proposed.

8 local specialised persons are involved (educators, teachers, psychologists, trainers, artists).

• WIP – Work in Progress – Development of enterprises - Beirut

Selection, formation and support to young Lebanese with ideas linked to enterprise and business, with accompaniment and formation on the part of Italian and Lebanese coaches and tutors, with a community of around 25 persons.

Beneficiaries reached: 10 young people formed on the theme of business-startup and directly helped by a loan and grants in order to launch their commercial and entrepreneurial-social activities. From the beginning of the WIP programme in 2022, around 100 young people have frequented the activities of formation proposed within the entrepreneurial context, and 30 have received a direct support to launch and develop their activities.

• Centre of assistance and medical dispensary - Tripoli

In the premises of the friary of Tripoli, various areas have been renewed and can now be used as a medical dispensary, which is active three days a week with specialised doctors (including a pediatrician and a gynecologist) and with the distribution of medicines.

Beneficiaries reached: around 400 persons and children have been welcomed and helped every month, through medical visits as well as distribution of medicines and vaccines.

A new room of Gynecology has been activated in the Dispensary.

• Saint Francis Cultural and Sports Centre - Tripoli

Within the friary of Saint Francis in Tripoli there is a large sports centre composed of: a football field, a basket-ball court, a playground, rooms for judo and dancing, a room for ping-pong. The sports centre is very important in the neighbourhood and is frequented by Christian and Muslim children and adolescents, coming from Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian families. An effort is being made to continue developing the centre and to organise sports competitions/courses.

4 new halls have been arranged in the complex outside the friary, for the creation of a music hall (courses of musical formation and a band for young people), a hall for art and dancing.

Beneficiaries reached: 300 children / young people coming from poor Lebanese families and from Palestinian/Syrian refugees have made use, whenever possible, of the football field, court and playground and from the training proposed in the centre, namely football, basket-ball, gym, judo, dancing and ping-pong.

35 children involved in artistic and cultural projects.

• Support for educational activities - Tripoli

In collaboration with local schools (Tripoli, Adonis, Carmelites, Gbaleh, Menjez) scholarships have been instituted during the year to support students and the families most in need.

In collaboration with a female art teacher, a cycle of courses of art and design has been organised.

Beneficiaries reached: 120 scholarships for children and the families most in need.

• After-school activities for children - Tyre

In the friary of Tyre activities for distribution of food, medicines, for welcoming and also for education of children have been realised.

Beneficiaries reached: 25 children helped with after-school activities.

• Emergency war

ProTS is active since 25 September 2024, immediately after the beginning of the war in the country, to help homeless people by welcoming them in some public schools that have been transformed into shelters. In particular, ProTS has intervened in the region of Metn (public school of Beit Chabab), in the region of Keserwan (Franciscan school of Adonis), in Jbeil (public school of Jbeil) and has collaborated closely with the Franciscan Friary of Tyre (south) – where 90 persons have been welcomed and sheltered during the first days of the war.

The following activities for the distribution of basic necessities have been realised:

ü Hot meals for around 500 beneficiaries reached every day – Jbeil and Metn

ü Drinking water for around 250 persons every day – Jbeil and Metn

ü Medicines (vitamins and medicines for chronic illnesses) for a total of 300 beneficiaries (250 in Metn and 50 in Jbeil)

ü Vaccines for kids, for a total of 80 children (55 in Metn and 25 in Jbeil)

ü Milk and diapers for 120 infants assisted every day – Jbeil, Metn, Adonis

ü Gasoline for the heating system of the centres or, as an alternative, blankets, in Metn school

ü Around 300 persons and children have been welcomed in the centres and have taken part in activities of psycho-social support, through the work of psychologists and educators of ProTS.

Lastly, ProTS has helped the friaries of the Franciscan Friars of Beirut (Gemmayze) and Harissa, where at present there are 30 persons living, through the covering of costs for lodging (blankets, mattresses, clothes). Unfortunately, the support to the friary of Tyre has been suspended as a result of the dangerous situation there which prohibits the friars from continuing the activities of welcoming.

1. EGYPT

• Conservation and enhancement of Musky - Cairo

Support to the Franciscan Centre for Oriental Christian Studies in order to renew the structure and to study/catalogue the collections, and support to the organisation for events which involve the local community, in particular the university students of Cairo. The principal aim of the Centre is the development of oriental sciences regarding the Christian communities of the Middle East, and the documentation on the life and history of Franciscans in the Holy Land.

Beneficiaries reached: around 200 students visitors in the Centre have been supported in their studies and research, by also offering them basic courses in Latin, Greek and Italian.

3 young men are involved in the activity of the centre, through research and doctoral studies.

• Helping the poor and education of young people – Cairo

Distribution of food and medicines to support poor people in the Musky quarter in Cairo, where the Franciscan friary of the Custody of the Holy Land is situated. Besides, in partnership with the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CIM) through their institutions in Port Said, Alexandria, El Dhahereya, Assiut, Minya, Towirat, Qena, Deir Donka, Kafr el Dawar, Haram, various aids of an educational character have been activated, such as the payment of school fees for children who are welcomed in orphanages, medical expenses for families, expenses for goods of basic necessity. Help is also given to young couples.

Beneficiaries reached: around 40 children and young people supported in the Musky quarter.

Around 850 women, persons in fragile economic situations, students and children, reached through the works that are supported.

• Project for the help of vulnerable families and prisoners – Abu Qurqas

Beneficiaries reached: 66 prisoners and their families in Abu Qurqas.

Service of accompaniment directed at 66 prisoners coming from vulnerable families in Abu Qurqas. The activities supported regard accompaniment in the legal, psychological and educational fields (this last aspect is directed towards the children of the prisoners, through the payment of fees for the participation in summer camps and for school fees).

1. ITALY

• Novices Project: Support for the formation of the Novices of the Custody – La Verna.

Description of the Project:

Support for the Novices of the Custody of the Holy Land, through the payment of food and lodging, health insurance and medical expenses, residents visa for citizens coming from outside the EU.

Beneficiaries reached: 8 friar Novices are helped to complete their year of novitiate.

1. Ordinary salaries of the Custody of the Holy Land.

The Custody of the Holy Land (CTS) offers work to 1465 employees. Of these, 955 work directly in different institutions and schools in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. The Human Resources Department supervises directly 60 of these initiatives, while the schools fall under the responsibility of the Central Office of Terra Sancta Schools. The rest of the personnel (510 employees) are employed in structures and institutions of the CTS outside the territory of the Holy Land.

The works of the CTS which fall under the Department for Human Resources face significant challenges because of the ongoing war. In spite of the loss of 46 employees, as a result of resignations or dismissals since the beginning of the war, these works continue to work with an organic number of 344 persons, distributed in the Palestinian Territories (82 employees) and Israel (262 employees, of whom 63 hold a Palestinian ID Card with special permits to work).
