Pubblichiamo di seguito il Messaggio che il Santo Padre Francesco ha inviato ai partecipanti all’incontro “AI Ethics for Peace” (Hiroshima, 9-10 luglio 2024):

Cari amici, vi giunga questo saluto per il vostro incontro dal titolo “AI Ethics for Peace”. Intelligenza artificiale e pace sono due temi di assoluta importanza, come ho avuto modo di sottolineare ai leader politici del G7: “Conviene sempre ricordare che la macchina può, in alcune forme e con questi nuovi mezzi, produrre delle scelte algoritmiche. Ciò che la macchina fa è una scelta tecnica tra più possibilità e si basa o su criteri ben definiti o su inferenze statistiche. L’essere umano, invece, non solo sceglie, ma in cuor suo è capace di decidere. La decisione è un elemento che potremmo definire maggiormente strategico di una scelta e richiede una valutazione pratica. A volte, spesso nel difficile compito del governare, siamo chiamati a decidere con conseguenze anche su molte persone. Da sempre la riflessione umana parla a tale proposito di saggezza, la phronesis della filosofia greca e almeno in parte la sapienza della Sacra Scrittura. Di fronte ai prodigi delle macchine, che sembrano saper scegliere in maniera indipendente, dobbiamo aver ben chiaro che all’essere umano deve sempre rimanere la decisione, anche con i toni drammatici e urgenti con cui a volte questa si presenta nella nostra vita. Condanneremmo l’umanità a un futuro senza speranza, se sottraessimo alle persone la capacità di decidere su loro stesse e sulla loro vita condannandole a dipendere dalle scelte delle macchine. Abbiamo bisogno di garantire e tutelare uno spazio di controllo significativo dell’essere umano sul processo di scelta dei programmi di intelligenza artificiale: ne va della stessa dignità umana” (Cfr. Nel lodare questa iniziativa vi chiedo di mostrare al mondo che uniti chiediamo un fattivo impegno per tutelare la dignità umana in questa nuova stagione di uso delle macchine.
Il fatto che vi ritroviate a Hiroshima per parlare di intelligenza artificiale e pace è di grande importanza simbolica. Tra gli attuali conflitti che scuotono il mondo, sempre più spesso purtroppo oltre all’odio della guerra si sente parlare di questa tecnologia. Per tale motivo ritengo di straordinaria importanza l’evento di Hiroshima. È fondamentale che, uniti come fratelli, possiamo ricordare al mondo che: “in un dramma come quello dei conflitti armati è urgente ripensare lo sviluppo e l’utilizzo di dispositivi come le cosiddette “armi letali autonome” per bandirne l’uso, cominciando già da un impegno fattivo e concreto per introdurre un sempre maggiore e significativo controllo umano. Nessuna macchina dovrebbe mai scegliere se togliere la vita ad un essere umano” (Cfr. Discorso al G7, 14 giugno 2024)
Se guardiamo alla complessità delle questioni che abbiamo davanti, includere nel governo delle intelligenze artificiali le ricchezze culturali dei popoli e delle religioni è una chiave strategica per il successo del vostro impegno per una saggia gestione dell’innovazione tecnologica.
Mentre auguro che questo incontro porti frutti di fraternità e di collaborazione, prego affinché ognuno di noi possa farsi strumento di pace per il mondo.

Dear friends, I send this greeting to those participating in the “AI Ethics for Peace” Gathering. Artificial intelligence and peace are two issues of supreme importance, as I had the opportunity to emphasize to the political leaders at the G7: “It should always be remembered that a machine can, in some ways and by these new methods, produce algorithmic choices. The machine makes a technical choice among several possibilities based either on well-defined criteria or on statistical inferences. Human beings, however, not only choose, but in their hearts are capable of deciding. A decision is what we might call a more strategic element of a choice and demands a practical evaluation. At times, frequently amid the difficult task of governing, we are called upon to make decisions that have consequences for many people. In this regard, human reflection has always spoken of wisdom, thephronesisof Greek philosophy and, at least in part, the wisdom of Sacred Scripture. Faced with the marvels of machines, which seem to know how to choose independently, we should be very clear that decision-making, even when we are confronted with its sometimes dramatic and urgent aspects, must always be left to the human person. We would condemn humanity to a future without hope if we took away people’s ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives, by dooming them to depend on the choices of machines. We need to ensure and safeguard a space for proper human control over the choices made by artificial intelligence programs: human dignity itself depends on it” (Address to the G7, 14 June 2024).
In commending your initiative, I ask you to show the world that we are united in asking for a proactive commitment to protect human dignity in this new era of machines.
The fact that you are gathering in Hiroshima to discuss artificial intelligence and peace is of great symbolic importance. Among the current conflicts impacting our world – including the hatred of war – we hear more and more about this technology. That is why I consider this event in Hiroshima to be of extraordinary importance. It is crucial that, united as brothers and sisters, we remind the world that “in light of the tragedy that is armed conflict, it is urgent to reconsider the development and use of devices like the so-called ‘lethal autonomous weapons’ and ultimately ban their use. This starts from an effective and concrete commitment to introduce ever greater and proper human control. No machine should ever choose to take the life of a human being” (Address to the G7, 14 June 2024).
As we look at the complexity of the issues before us, recognizing the contribution of the cultural riches of peoples and religions in the regulation of artificial intelligence is key to the success of your commitment to the wise management of technological innovation.
Hoping that your gathering will bear fruit in bringing about fraternity and cooperation, I pray that each of us may become instruments of peace for the world.
