Questa mattina, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza i Fedeli della Chiesa Siro-Malabarese e ha loro rivolto il discorso che pubblichiamo di seguito:

Beatitudine,
Eccellenze,
cari fratelli e sorelle,

Sono lieto di incontrarvi e di dare il benvenuto a Lei, ai fratelli Vescovi e a quanti L’accompagnano nel Suo primo viaggio a Roma dopo l’elezione. È stata bella l’elezione! Saluto fraternamente anche i rappresentanti della comunità siro-malabarese di Roma.

I fedeli della vostra amata Chiesa sono conosciuti, non solo in India ma nel mondo intero, per il vigore della fede e della devozione. La vostra è una fedeltà antica, radicata nella testimonianza, fino al martirio, di San Tommaso, Apostolo dell’India: siete custodi ed eredi della predicazione apostolica. Avete avuto tante sfide nel corso della vostra storia, lunga e travagliata, la quale in passato ha pure visto dei fratelli nella fede commettere contro di voi azioni sciagurate, insensibili alle peculiarità della vostra fiorente Chiesa. Eppure siete rimasti fedeli al Successore di Pietro. E io sono felice oggi di accogliervi e di confermarvi nella gloriosa eredità che avete ricevuto e che portate avanti. Voi siete obbedienti, e dove c’è obbedienza c’è Ecclesia; dove c’è disobbedienza c’è lo scisma. E voi siete obbedienti, questa è una gloria vostra: l’obbedienza. Anche con la sofferenza, ma andare avanti.

È la vostra storia, singolare e preziosa, ed è un patrimonio unico per tutto il Popolo santo di Dio. Ne approfitto per ricordare che le tradizioni orientali sono tesori imprescindibili nella Chiesa. Specialmente in un tempo come il nostro, che taglia le radici e misura tutto, purtroppo anche l’atteggiamento religioso, sull’utile e sull’immediato, l’Oriente cristiano permette di attingere a fonti antiche e sempre nuove di spiritualità. Queste fresche sorgenti apportano vitalità alla Chiesa ed è perciò bello per me, in quanto Vescovo di Roma, incoraggiare voi, fedeli cattolici siro-malabaresi, ovunque vi troviate, a ben coltivare il senso di appartenenza alla vostra Chiesa sui iuris, affinché il suo grande patrimonio liturgico, teologico, spirituale e culturale possa ancor più risplendere. E inoltre ho detto a Sua Beatitudine di chiedere la giurisdizione per tutti i vostri migranti in tante parti del Medio Oriente. Ho detto che devono chiedere la giurisdizione con le carte, ma io oggi ho dato già la giurisdizione e possono agire con questo. Si deve fare anche tramite le carte, ma da oggi potete. Io desidero aiutarvi, senza però sostituirvi, proprio perché la natura della vostra Chiesa sui iuris vi abilita, oltre che ad un esame attento delle varie situazioni, anche ad adottare i provvedimenti opportuni per affrontare con responsabilità e coraggio evangelico, fedeli alla guida dell’Arcivescovo Maggiore e del Sinodo, le prove che state attraversando. È quello che vuole la Chiesa: fuori da Pietro, fuori dall’Arcivescovo Maggiore non è Ecclesia.

In tal senso, negli ultimi tempi ho indirizzato delle lettere e ho rivolto ai fedeli un videomessaggio per avvertirli della pericolosa tentazione di volersi concentrare su un dettaglio, a cui non si vuole rinunciare, a discapito del bene comune della Chiesa. È la deriva dell’autoreferenzialità, che porta a non sentire nessun’altra ragione se non la propria. In spagnolo, noi diciamo che questa autoreferenzialità si dice “yo, me, mi, con migo, para mi”: io, me, mi, con me, per me, tutto per me. Ed è qui che il diavolo – il diavolo esiste –, il divisore, si insinua, contrastando il desiderio più accorato che il Signore ha espresso prima di immolarsi per noi: che noi, suoi discepoli, fossimo «una sola cosa» (Gv 17,21), senza dividerci, senza rompere la comunione. Custodire l’unità, dunque, non è una pia esortazione, ma un dovere, e lo è soprattutto quando si tratta di sacerdoti che hanno promesso obbedienza e da cui il popolo credente si aspetta l’esempio della carità e della mansuetudine.

Beatitudine, lavoriamo con determinazione per custodire la comunione e preghiamo senza stancarci perché i nostri fratelli, tentati dalla mondanità che porta a irrigidirsi e a dividere, possano rendersi conto di essere parte di una famiglia più grande, che vuole loro bene e li aspetta. Come il Padre nei riguardi del figlio prodigo, lasciamo le porte aperte e il cuore aperto perché, una volta ravveduti, non trovino difficoltà ad entrare (cfr Evangelii gaudium, 46): li aspettiamo. Ci si confronti e si discuta senza paura – questo va bene –, ma soprattutto si preghi, perché, alla luce dello Spirito, che armonizza le diversità e riconduce le tensioni in unità, si risolvano i conflitti. Con una certezza: che l’orgoglio, le recriminazioni, le invidie non vengono dal Signore e non portano mai alla concordia e alla pace. Mancare di rispetto gravemente al Santissimo Sacramento, Sacramento della carità e dell’unità, discutendo di dettagli celebrativi di quella Eucaristia che è il punto più alto della sua presenza adorata tra noi, è incompatibile con la fede cristiana. Il criterio guida, quello veramente spirituale, quello che deriva dallo Spirito Santo, è la comunione: significa verificarsi sull’adesione all’unità, sulla custodia fedele e umile, rispettosa e obbediente dei doni ricevuti.

E vorrei dire a tutti: nei momenti di difficoltà e di crisi non ci si lasci prendere dallo scoraggiamento o da un senso di impotenza di fronte ai problemi. Fratelli e sorelle, non si spenga la speranza, non ci si stanchi di aver pazienza, non ci si chiuda in pregiudizi che portano ad alimentare animosità. Pensiamo ai grandi orizzonti della missione che il Signore ci affida, la missione di essere segno della sua presenza di amore nel mondo, non scandalo per chi non crede! Pensiamo, nel prendere ogni decisione, ai poveri e ai lontani, alle periferie, a quelle in India e nella diaspora, a quelle esistenziali. Pensiamo a chi soffre e attende segnali di speranza e di consolazione. So che la vita di tanti cristiani in molti luoghi è difficile, ma la differenza cristiana consiste nel rispondere al male col bene, nel lavorare senza stancarsi con tutti i credenti per il bene di tutti gli uomini.

Io vi ringrazio per l’impegno della vostra Chiesa nei campi della formazione familiare e della catechesi, e sostengo il vostro lavoro pastorale rivolto ai giovani e alle vocazioni. Vi sono vicino nella preghiera e vi porto nel cuore ogni giorno. E voi, per favore, portate ai vostri fratelli e sorelle il mio incoraggiamento.

Insieme guardiamo a Gesù: a Lui crocifisso e risorto, a Lui che ci ama e fa di noi una cosa sola, a Lui che ci vuole riuniti come una sola famiglia attorno a un unico altare. Come l’apostolo Tommaso, guardiamo alle sue piaghe: sono visibili ancora oggi nel corpo di tanti affamati, assetati e scartati, nelle carceri, negli ospedali e lungo le strade; toccando questi fratelli con tenerezza, accogliamo il Dio vivente in mezzo a noi. Come San Tommaso, guardiamo le piaghe di Gesù e vediamo come da quelle ferite, che avevano tramortito i discepoli e potevano gettarli in un irreparabile senso di colpa, il Signore ha fatto scorrere canali di perdono e di misericordia. Cuore largo, cuore largo, sempre! Quale stupore avrà colto l’apostolo Tommaso nel contemplarle e nel vedere i suoi dubbi e le sue paure svanire di fronte alla grandezza di Dio! È lo stupore che genera speranza, è lo stupore che lo ha spinto a uscire, a valicare nuovi confini per diventare vostro padre nella fede. Coltiviamo questo stupore della fede, che permette di superare ogni ostacolo!

E voi, cari fedeli della comunità siro-malabarese di Roma, discendenti dell’apostolo Tommaso nella città di Pietro e Paolo, avete un ruolo speciale: da questa Chiesa, che presiede alla comunione universale della carità (cfr S. Ignazio di Antiochia, Lettera ai Romani), siete chiamati a pregare e a cooperare in modo speciale per l’unità all’interno della vostra Chiesa, non solo nel Kerala ma in tutta l’India e in tutto il mondo. Il Kerala, che è una miniera di vocazioni! Preghiamo perché continui a esserlo.

Beatitudine, grazie per questa visita fraterna, ne sono contento. Cari fratelli e sorelle, di cuore vi benedico e vi affido alla Vergine Maria, a San Tommaso Apostolo e ai vostri santi e martiri; e vi chiedo, per favore, di non dimenticarvi di pregare per me. Grazie, grazie tante!

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am pleased to welcome you, your brother bishops and those who have accompanied you on your first trip to Rome after your election. It was good to have this election! I also fraternally greet the representatives of the Syro-Malabar community in Rome.

The faithful of your beloved Church are known, not only in India, but throughout the whole world, for the “vigour” of their faith and piety. Your faith is of an ancient origin, as it is rooted in the witness to the point of martyrdom of Saint Thomas, the Apostle of India. You are all custodians and heirs of his apostolic preaching. You have had many challenges over the course of your long and difficult history, which has also seen some members of the faith commit unfortunate acts against you because of their insensitivity to the particular nature of your flourishing Church. Yet, you have remained faithful to the Successor of Peter. And so it gives me great joy to welcome all of you and to confirm you in the glorious legacy that you have received and which you carry forward. You are obedient, and where obedience is present, there is the Church. Where there is disobedience, there is schism. You are obedient; this is one of your glorious attributes: obedience. I know this is not without suffering, but continue to press forward.

Your history is unique and precious, and it is a special heritage for all God’s holy people. And I take this opportunity to stress that Eastern traditions are indispensable treasures in the life of the Church. This is especially important to recall in a time like ours, which severs the roots connecting us to the past and measures everything based on what is useful and immediate. This unfortunately can also include religious attitudes. The Christian East allows us to draw from ancient and ever new sources of spirituality; these become fresh springs that bring vitality to the Church. It is, therefore, good for me, as Bishop of Rome, to encourage you, the Syro-Malabar Catholic faithful, wherever you are, to cultivate the sense of belonging you have to your Church sui iuris, so that your great liturgical, theological, spiritual and cultural heritage may shine ever more brightly. I also told His Beatitude to ask for jurisdiction with regard to all your migrants in so many parts of the Middle East. I said that they have to ask for jurisdiction in writing, but I have given it today and they can already exercise it. This has to be put in writing, but again, as of today, you can exercise it. I wish to help you, not supersede you, because the nature of your Church sui iuris empowers you not only to examine carefully the situations and challenges that you face, but also to take appropriate steps to address them, with responsibility and evangelical courage, remaining faithful to the guidance of the Major Archbishop and the Synod. This is what the Church wants, for apart from Peter, apart from the Major Archbishop, there is no Church.

To this end, I have recently sent letters and a video message to the faithful, warning them of the dangerous temptation to focus on one detail, and an unwillingness to let it go, even to the detriment of the good of the Church. It stems from a self-referentiality, which leads to listening to no other way of thinking but one’s own. In Spanish we call this self-referentiality “yo, me, mi, con migo, para mi”: “I, me, with me, for me, everything for me”. It is here that the devil, the divider, who truly exists, creeps in and thwarts the most heartfelt desire that the Lord expressed before dying for us: that we, his disciples, be “one” (Jn 17:21), without division and without breaking communion. For this reason, guarding unity is not a pious exhortation but a duty, and it is especially so when it concerns priests who have promised obedience and from whom the faithful expect the example of charity and meekness.

Your Beatitude, let us work with determination to protect communion and pray tirelessly that our brothers and sisters, tempted by a worldliness that leads to rigidity and division, may realize that they are part of a larger family that loves them and waits for them. Like the Father in the parable of the prodigal son, let us leave the doors open and our hearts open so that, once they have repented, they will not find it difficult to re-enter (cf. Evangelii gaudium, 46): we are waiting for them. Let us meet and discuss without fear, this is fine, but above all, let us pray, so that the light of the Spirit, which reconciles differences and brings tensions back into unity, may resolve disputes. There is one certainty: pride, recriminations and envy do not come from the Lord and never lead to concord and peace. Showing a grave lack of respect for the Blessed Sacrament – the Sacrament of charity and unity – by arguing about the details of how to celebrate the Eucharist, the pinnacle of his presence among us, is incompatible with the Christian faith. The guiding criterion, the truly spiritual one that derives from the Holy Spirit, is communion: this requires us to do a self-examination of our dedication to unity and our faithful, humble, respectful and obedient care for the gifts we have received.

I would like to say to everyone, in moments of difficulty and crisis, do not be overcome by discouragement or a sense of helplessness in the face of problems. Brothers and sisters, let us not extinguish hope, grow weary of patience, or close ourselves off to prejudices that fuel animosities. Rather, let us think about the vast horizon of the mission that the Lord has entrusted to us, the mission to be a sign of his loving presence in the world, and not a scandal to those who do not believe! When making decisions, let us think of the poor and the estranged, those on the peripheries, in India and the diaspora, and those in an existential crisis. Let us also be mindful of those who are suffering and waiting for signs of hope and consolation. I know that the lives of Christians in many places are difficult, but the difference is that we Christians respond to evil with good and we work tirelessly with all believers for the good of humanity.

I would like to thank you for your Church’s commitment in the areas of family formation and catechesis, and I support your pastoral work aimed at youth and vocations. I am close to you in prayer and carry you in my heart every day. Please also take my encouragement to your brothers and sisters.

Together we look to Jesus, crucified and risen, who loves us and makes us one, who wants us united as one family around one altar. Like the Apostle Thomas, let us look at his wounds. They are still visible today on the bodies of the hungry, thirsty and discarded, those in prisons, hospitals and on the streets. As we touch these brothers and sisters with tenderness, we welcome the living God in our midst. Like St. Thomas, we look at the wounds of Jesus, which had stunned the disciples and could have thrown them into a hopeless guilt, and see that it is from those wounds the Lord made channels of forgiveness and mercy. A big heart, always a big heart! What amazement must have seized the Apostle Thomas as he contemplated them and saw his doubts and fears vanish before the greatness of God! It is an amazement that generates hope, an amazement that prompted him to go out, to cross new borders and to become your father in faith. Let us cultivate this amazement of faith, which enables us to overcome every obstacle!

And you, dear faithful of the Syro-Malabar community in Rome, descendants of the Apostle Thomas in the city of Peter and Paul, have a special role to play. From this Church, which presides over the universal communion of charity (cfr. Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Romans), you are called to pray and cooperate in a special way for unity within your Church, not only in Kerala but also throughout India and the whole world. Kerala is a treasure-trove of vocations! Let us pray that it will continue to be so.

Your Beatitude, thank you for this fraternal visit; I am pleased by it. Dear brothers and sisters, from the bottom of my heart I bless you and entrust you to the Virgin Mary, Saint Thomas the Apostle and your saints and martyrs; and I ask you, please do not forget to pray for me. Thank you, thank you very much!
