Caro confratello nell’episcopato,

“E ora i nostri piedi si fermano alle tue porte, Gerusalemme”. Come avremmo voluto che le parole del salmo 122 fossero la descrizione di ciò che accade ai nostri giorni! E invece tanti pellegrini restano lontani dalla città dei loro sogni, mentre gli abitanti della Terra Santa continuano a soffrire e a morire. In tutto il mondo risuona il rombo delle armi portatrici di morte. E non si vede tregua, anche se Dio ci ha assicurato che “Ogni calzatura di soldato nella mischia e ogni mantello macchiato di sangue sarà bruciato, sarà esca del fuoco”. Questa è la profezia di Isaia (9,4). Abbiamo visto e vediamo uomini in armi spargere sangue e uccidere la vita stessa. Eppure nel versetto successivo Isaia annunciava che “un bimbo ci è stato donato […] il Principe della pace”. Per noi Cristiani quel bimbo è Gesù, il Cristo, il Dio fatto uomo, il Dio con noi.

Papa Francesco non ha mai cessato di manifestare la propria vicinanza a tutti coloro che sono stati coinvolti nel conflitto in Terra Santa e di gridare, agli uomini e alle donne di buona volontà, la propria esortazione a operare per la pace e a rispettare la sacralità di ogni persona umana. Anche di recente così si è espresso: “Sono vicino a tutti coloro che soffrono, Palestinesi e Israeliani. Li abbraccio in questo momento buio. E prego tanto per loro. Le armi si fermino, non porteranno mai la pace, e il conflitto non si allarghi! Basta! Basta, fratelli, basta!” (Angelus, 12 novembre 2023).

Il pellegrinaggio a Gerusalemme ha una storia antica quanto il cristianesimo, e non solo per i Cattolici. Questo è reso ancora oggi possibile dall’opera generosa dei Francescani della Custodia di Terra Santa e dalle Chiese Orientali ivi presenti. Essi mantengono e animano i santuari, segni della memoria dei passi e delle azioni di Gesù, testimoni materiali di un Dio che assunse la materia per salvare noi, fango animato dal soffio dello Spirito. Per la loro dedizione in quei luoghi si continua a pregare incessantemente per il mondo intero.

Fin dalle sue origini la Chiesa ha coltivato ininterrottamente e con passione la solidarietà con la Chiesa di Gerusalemme. In epoca tardo-medievale e moderna, più volte i Sommi Pontefici intervennero per promuovere e regolamentare la colletta a favore del Luoghi Santi. L’ultima volta fu riformata dal santo Papa Paolo VI nel 1974 attraverso l’Esortazione Apostolica Nobis in Animo. Anche Papa Francesco ha spesso sottolineato l’importanza di questo gesto ecclesiale.

Cari fratelli e sorelle, non si tratta di una pia tradizione per pochi. Ovunque nella Chiesa Cattolica si fa obbligo ai fedeli di offrire il loro aiuto nella cosiddetta Colletta Pontificia per la Terra Santa che si raccoglie il Venerdì Santo o, per alcune aree, in un altro giorno dell’anno. Lo faremo anche quest’anno, sperando in una vostra particolare generosità.

E sapete perché? Perché, oltre alla custodia dei Luoghi Santi che hanno visto Gesù, ci sono, ancora viventi e operanti pur fra mille tragedie e difficoltà spesso causate dall’egoismo dei grandi della terra, i cristiani della Terra Santa. Molti nella storia sono morti martiri per non veder recise le radici della loro antichissima cristianità. Le loro Chiese sono parte integrante della storia e della cultura d’Oriente.

Ma oggi molti di loro non ce la fanno più e abbandonano i luoghi dove i loro padri e le loro madri hanno pregato e testimoniato il Vangelo. Lasciano tutto e fuggono perché non vedono speranza. E lupi rapaci si dividono le loro spoglie.

I cristiani di Iraq, Siria, Libano e di tante altre terre si rivolgono a noi e ci chiedono: “Aiutateci a diffondere ancora in Oriente il buon profumo di Cristo” (2 Cor 2,15).

Io mi rivolgo a voi perché il loro grido non resti inascoltato e il Santo Padre possa sostenere le Chiese locali a trovare nuove vie, occasioni di abitazione, di lavoro, di formazione scolastica e professionale, perché rimangano e non si perdano nel mondo sconosciuto di un Occidente, così diverso dal loro sentire e dal loro modo di testimoniare la fede. Se partiranno, se a Gerusalemme e in Palestina lasceranno i loro piccoli commerci destinati ai pellegrini che non vi si recano più, l’Oriente perderà parte della sua anima, forse per sempre.

Fate che sentano il cuore solidale della Chiesa!

Alle Chiese locali, ai Francescani, ai tanti volontari della carità, veri figli della pace, testimoni del Principe della pace, esprimo il grazie di Papa Francesco, come pure a tutti voi, per la vostra preghiera e il vostro contributo per la Terra Santa e per tutti coloro che vi abitano.

Il Signore vi benedica e vi ricompensi. Grazie anche a ciascuno dei Vescovi che terranno a cuore questa santa iniziativa.

Grazie a nome di chi piange e di chi muore per la follia della guerra. Grazie soprattutto a nome di chi ha perso i suoi bambini o li vede orribilmente mutilati. Aiutateci ad aiutarli!

Cher frère dans l’épiscopat,

«Maintenant notre marche prend fin devant tes portes, Jérusalem!». Comme nous aurions souhaité que les paroles du psaume 121 soient la description de ce qui se passe aujourd’hui! Malheureusement, de nombreux pèlerins restent éloignés de la ville de leurs rêves, tandis que les habitants de Terre Sainte continuent à souffrir et mourir. Partout dans le monde résonne le grondement des armes porteuses de mort. Et on ne voit pas de répit, bien que Dieu nous ait assuré que : «les bottes qui frappaient le sol, et les manteaux couverts de sang, les voilà tous brûlés: le feu les a dévorés». Telle est la prophétie d’Isaïe (9,4). Nous avons vu et nous voyons des hommes en armes verser le sang et tuer la vie elle-même. Et pourtant, dans le verset suivant, Isaïe annonçait qu’un «un fils nous a été donné[…]le Prince-de-la-Paix». Pour nous chrétiens, cet enfant est Jésus, le Christ, le Dieu fait homme, Dieu avec nous.

Le Pape François n’a jamais cessé de manifester sa proximité à tous ceux qui ont été impliqués dans le conflit en Terre Sainte et de crier aux hommes et aux femmes de bonne volonté son exhortation à œuvrer pour la paix et à respecter le caractère sacré de chaque personne humaine. Encore récemment, il s’exprimait ainsi : «Je suis proche de tous ceux qui souffrent, Palestiniens et Israéliens. Je les embrasse en ce moment sombre. Et je prie beaucoup pour eux. Que les armes se taisent, elles n’apporteront jamais la paix, et que le conflit ne s’étende pas! Assez! Assez, frères, assez!»(Angelus, 12 novembre 2023).

Le pèlerinage à Jérusalem a une histoire aussi ancienne que le christianisme, et pas seulement pour les catholiques. Cela est rendu possible encore aujourd’hui grâce à l’œuvre généreuse des Franciscains de la Custodie de Terre Sainte et des Eglises Orientales qui y sont présentes. Ils maintiennent et animent les sanctuaires, signes de la mémoire des actions de Jésus, témoins matériels d’un Dieu qui a assumé la matière pour nous sauver, boue animée par le souffle de l’Esprit. Grâce à leur dévouement dans ces lieux, on ne cesse pas d’y prier pour le monde entier.

Depuis ses origines, l’Eglise a sans cesse cultivé et avec passion la solidarité avec sa sœur de Jérusalem. À la fin du Moyen-Âge et à l’époque moderne, les Souverains Pontifes intervinrent plusieurs fois pour promouvoir et réglementer la collecte en faveur des Lieux Saints. Le dernier à l’avoir fait fut le saint Pape Paul VI en 1974 par son Exhortation Apostolique Nobis in Animo. Le Pape François a lui aussi souvent souligné l’importance de ce geste ecclésial.

Chers frères et sœurs, il ne s’agit pas d’une pieuse tradition réservée à quelques-uns. Partout dans l’Eglise catholique, on fait obligation aux fidèles d’offrir leur aide par la Collecte pontificale pour la Terre Sainte qui se fait le Vendredi Saint ou, dans d’autres lieux, un autre jour de l’année. Nous la ferons cette année encore, en comptant sur votre générosité particulière.

Savez pourquoi ? Parce qu’en plus de la garde des Lieux Saints qui ont vu Jésus, il y a encore vivants et actifs des chrétiens de Terre Sainte malgré mille tragédies et difficultés, souvent causées par l’égoïsme des grands de ce monde. Nombreux dans l’histoire sont morts martyrs pour ne pas voir coupées les racines de leur chrétienté très ancienne. Leurs Églises font partie intégrante de l’histoire comme de la culture de l’Orient.

Mais aujourd’hui, beaucoup d’entre eux n’en peuvent plus et abandonnent les lieux où leurs pères et leurs mères ont prié et témoigné de l’Évangile. Ils abandonnent tout et fuient parce qu’ils ne voient plus d’espoir. Et les loups rapaces se partagent les dépouilles.

Les chrétiens d’Irak, de Syrie, du Liban et de tant d’autres terres s’adressent à nous et nous demandent : Aidez-nous à répandre encore en Orient «la bonne odeur du Christ» (2 Co 2, 15).

Je m’adresse à vous pour que leur cri ne reste pas lettre-morte et que le Saint Père puisse soutenir les Eglises locales à trouver de nouvelles voies, des lieux d’habitation, du travail, des formations scolaires et professionnelles, afin qu’ils puissent rester et ne se perdent pas dans le monde inconnu d’un Occident si différent de leur manière de vivre comme de témoigner de leur foi. S’ils partent, s’ils abandonnent Jérusalem et la Palestine, leurs petits commerces destinés aux pèlerins qui n’y vont plus, l’Orient perdra une partie de son âme et peut-être pour toujours.

Faites qu’ils ressentent la solidarité chaleureuse de l’Eglise!

Aux Eglises locales, aux Franciscains, à tant de volontaires de la charité, vrais enfants de la paix et témoins du Prince de la paix, j’exprime les remerciements du Pape François, ainsi qu’à vous tous, pour votre prière et votre contribution pour la Terre Sainte et pour tous ceux qui y habitent.

Que le Seigneur vous bénisse et vous récompense de votre générosité. Merci également à tous ceux qui favoriseront cette sainte initiative.

Merci au nom de ceux qui pleurent ou qui meurent à cause de la folie de la guerre. Merci surtout au nom de ceux qui ont perdu leurs enfants ou qui les voient horriblement mutilés. Aidez-nous à les aider!

Que le Seigneur vous comble d’abondantes bénédictions et consolations.

Ash Wednesday, 2024

Dear brother in the episcopate,

“And now our feet are standing within your gates, Jerusalem.” How we wish the words of Psalm 122 were a description of what is happening in our days! Instead, many pilgrims remain far from the city of their dreams, while the inhabitants of the Holy Land continue to suffer and die. Throughout the world, the roar of weapons that bring death resounds. And there is no respite, even though God has assured us that “For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for fire.” This is the prophecy of Isaiah (9:4). We have seen and continue to see men in arms shedding blood and killing life itself. Yet, in the next verse, Isaiah announced that “A child is born to us […] the Prince of Peace.” For us Christians, that child is Jesus Christ, God made man, God with us.

Pope Francis has never ceased to express his closeness to all those affected by the conflict in the Holy Land and to cry out to men and women of goodwill, urging them to work for peace and to respect the sanctity of every human person. In recent times he expressed these words: “I am close to all those who are suffering, Palestinians and Israelis. I embrace them in this dark moment. And I pray for them a lot. May the weapons be stopped: they will never lead to peace, and may the conflict not widen! Enough! Enough, brothers, enough!” (Angelus, November 12, 2023).

The pilgrimage to Jerusalem has a history as ancient as Christianity itself, and not only for Catholics. This is made possible even today by the generous work of the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land and the Eastern Churches present there. They maintain and animate the holy sites, a living memory of Jesus’ steps and actions, a visible testimony of the God who made Himself flesh and blood to save us, mud animated by the breath of His Spirit. Thanks to their dedicated work in those places, we continue to pray unceasingly for the whole world.

Since its origins, the Church has continuously and passionately cultivated solidarity with the Church of Jerusalem. In the late medieval and modern era, the Supreme Pontiffs intervened several times to promote and regulate the Collection for the Holy Land. The Collection was last reformed by Pope Saint Paul VI in 1974 with his Apostolic Exhortation ‘Nobis in Animo’. Pope Francis has also often emphasized the importance of this ecclesial gesture.

Dear brothers and sisters, this is not merely a pious tradition for a few. Everywhere in the Catholic Church, the faithful have an obligation to offer their contribution to the so-called Pontifical Collection for the Holy Land, which is collected on Good Friday or, in some regions, on another day of the year. We will do the Collection again this year, hoping in your particular generosity.

And do you know why? Because, apart from the custody of the Holy Places that saw Jesus, there are still Christians living and operating in the Holy Land, amid many tragedies and difficulties often caused by the selfishness of the powerful of the world. Over the centuries many died as martyrs so as not to see their Christian roots cut off. Their Churches are an integral part of the history and culture of the East.

But today, many of them cannot take it anymore, and abandon the places where their fathers and mothers prayed and witnessed the Gospel. They leave everything and flee because they see no hope. And ravenous wolves divide their spoils.

The Christians of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and many other lands turn to us and ask, "Help us to spread the sweet aroma of Christ" (2 Corinthians 2:15) again in the East.

I address you so that their cry does not go unheard and that the Holy Father can support the local Churches in finding new ways, opportunities for housing, work, and educational and professional training, so that they may remain and not get lost in the West, a world they don’t know, which is so different from their feelings and their way of witnessing their faith. If they leave, if they leave their small businesses serving pilgrims who no longer come to Jerusalem and Palestine, the East will lose part of its soul, perhaps forever.

Make them feel the solidarity of the Church!

I express Pope Francis's gratitude to the local Churches, to the Franciscans, to the many charity volunteers, true children of peace, witnesses of the Prince of peace, and also to all of you for your prayer and your contribution for the Holy Land and for all those who dwell there.

May the Lord bless you and reward you. Thanks also to each of the Bishops who will take to heart this blessed initiative.

Thank you on behalf of those who cry and those who die because of the madness of war. Thank you especially on behalf of those who have lost their children or see them horribly mutilated. Help us to help them!

May the Lord bless you with abundant blessings and consolation.

Lieber Mitbruder im Bischofsamt,

„Schon stehen unsere Füße in deinen Toren, Jerusalem“. Wie gerne hätten wir die Worte des Psalms 122 als Beschreibung dessen verwendet, was in unseren Tagen geschieht! Und doch bleiben viele Pilger der Stadt ihrer Träume fern, während die Bewohner des Heiligen Landes weiterhin leiden und sterben. Der Lärm todbringender Waffen hallt auf der ganzen Welt wider. Und es ist keine Ruhe in Sicht, auch wenn Gott uns zusichert: „Jeder Stiefel, der dröhnend daherstampft, / jeder Mantel, im Blut gewälzt, / wird verbrannt, wird ein Fraß des Feuers.“ Dies ist die Prophezeiung von Jesaja (9,4). Wir haben gesehen und sehen, wie Männer in Waffen Blut vergossen und das Leben selbst töteten. Doch im nächsten Vers verkündete Jesaja, dass „uns ein Kind gegeben wurde“: „der Fürst des Friedens“. Für uns Christen ist dieses Kind Jesus, der Christus, der menschgewordene Gott, der Gott mit uns.

Papst Franziskus hat nie aufgehört, allen am Konflikt im Heiligen Land Beteiligten seine Nähe zum Ausdruck zu bringen und Männer und Frauen guten Willens zu ermahnen, sich für den Frieden einzusetzen und die Heiligkeit jedes Menschen zu respektieren. Noch vor kurzem äußerte er sich so: „Ich stehe all jenen nahe, die leiden, den Palästinensern und den Israelis. Ich umarme sie in dieser dunklen Stunde. Und ich bete sehr viel für sie. Lasst die Waffen ruhen, sie werden niemals Frieden bringen, und lasst den Konflikt sich nicht ausweiten! Genug! Genug, Brüder und Schwestern, genug!“ (Angelus, 12. November 2023).

Die Pilgerfahrt nach Jerusalem hat eine Geschichte, die so alt ist wie das Christentum, und das nicht nur für Katholiken. Dies wird auch heute noch durch die großzügige Arbeit der Franziskaner der Kustodie des Heiligen Landes ermöglicht. Sie erhalten und beleben die Wallfahrtsorte, die Zeichen der Erinnerung an die Schritte und Taten Jesu sind, materielle Zeugen eines Gottes, der sich der Materie angenommen hat, um uns zu erlösen, Schlamm, der durch den Hauch des Geistes belebt wird. Für ihren Einsatz an diesen Orten wird weiterhin unaufhörlich auf der ganzen Welt gebetet.

Seit ihren Anfängen pflegt die Kirche kontinuierlich und mit Leidenschaft ihre Solidarität mit der Kirche von Jerusalem. Im späten Mittelalter und in der Neuzeit griffen die Päpste mehrmals ein, um die Kollekte zugunsten der Heiligen Stätten zu fördern und zu regeln. Zuletzt wurde dies 1974 vom heiligen Papst Paul VI. durch das Apostolische Schreiben Nobis in Animo neu geregelt. Auch Papst Franziskus hat oft die Bedeutung dieser kirchlichen Geste betont.

Liebe Brüder und Schwestern, dies ist keine fromme Tradition für wenige. Überall in der katholischen Kirche sind die Gläubigen verpflichtet, ihre Hilfe in der sogenannten Päpstlichen Kollekte für das Heilige Land anzubieten, die am Karfreitag oder in einigen Gegenden der Welt auch an einem anderen Tag im Jahr gesammelt wird. Wir werden diese Sammlung auch in diesem Jahr durchführen, und wir hoffen auf Ihre besondere Großzügigkeit.

Und wissen Sie warum? Denn über die Pflege der heiligen Stätten, die Jesus gesehen haben, hinaus, gibt es trotz tausender Tragödien und Schwierigkeiten, die oft durch den Egoismus der Großen der Welt verursacht werden, immer noch Christen im Heiligen Land, die dort leben und wirken. In der Geschichte sind viele als Märtyrer gestorben, um nicht zu erleben, wie die Wurzeln ihres alten Christentums zerstört werden. Ihre Kirchen sind ein integraler Bestandteil der Geschichte und Kultur des Orients.

Aber heute können es viele von ihnen nicht mehr ertragen und verlassen die Orte, an denen ihre Väter und Mütter gebetet und das Evangelium bezeugt haben. Sie lassen alles zurück und fliehen, weil sie keine Hoffnung sehen. Und räuberische Wölfe teilen ihre Beute.

Die Christen im Irak, in Syrien, im Libanon und in vielen anderen Ländern wenden sich an uns und bitten: „Helfen Sie uns, den Wohlgeruch Christi im Orient wieder zu verbreiten!“ (vgl. 2 Kor 2,15)

Ich wende mich an Sie, damit ihr Ruf nicht ungehört bleibt und der Heilige Vater die Ortskirchen dabei unterstützen kann, neue Wege und Möglichkeiten für Wohnraum, Arbeit, Schul- und Berufsausbildung zu finden, damit die Christen dort leben bleiben und sich nicht in der unbekannten Welt eines Westens verlieren, der sich so sehr von ihren Gefühlen und ihrer Art, den Glauben zu bezeugen, unterscheidet. Wenn sie gehen, wenn sie ihre kleinen Geschäfte in Jerusalem und Palästina verlassen, die für die Pilger bestimmt waren, die nicht mehr dorthin gehen, dann wird der Orient einen Teil seiner Seele verlieren, vielleicht für immer.

Lassen Sie sie das solidarische Herz der Kirche spüren!

Den Ortskirchen, den Franziskanern, den vielen freiwilligen Helfern der Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen, den wahren Kindern des Friedens und Zeugen des Friedensfürsten, spreche ich den Dank von Papst Franziskus aus, wie auch Ihnen allen für Ihre Gebete und Ihren Beitrag für das Heilige Land und für alle, die dort leben.

Möge der Herr Sie segnen und es Ihnen vergelten. Ein Dank auch an alle Bischöfe, die sich dieser heilige Initiative als ein Herzensanliegen annehmen.

Ein Dank im Namen derer, die weinen und derer, die durch den Wahnsinn des Krieges sterben. Ein Dank besonders im Namen derjenigen, die ihre Kinder verloren haben oder erleben müssen, wie sie schrecklich verstümmelt wurden. Helfen Sie uns, ihnen zu helfen!

Querido hermano en el episcopado:

“Y ahora nuestros pies se detienen a tus puertas, Jerusalén”. ¡Cómo hubiéramos querido que las palabras del salmo 122 fuesen la descripción de lo que ocurre hoy día! Y, en cambio, son tantos los peregrinos que quedan lejos de la ciudad de sus sueños, mientras los habitantes de la Tierra Santa continúan sufriendo y muriendo. En todo el mundo resuena el estruendo de las armas portadoras de muerte. Y no se ve tregua, aun cuando Dios nos ha asegurado que “han sido echados al fuego y devorados por las llamas las botas jactanciosas del guerrero y el manto manchado en sangre”. Esta es la profecía de Isaías (9,5). Hemos visto y vemos hombres en armas derramando sangre y matando la misma vida. Y, sin embargo, en el siguiente versículo Isaías anunciaba que “nos ha nacido un niño, nos ha sido dado un hijo [...] el Príncipe de la paz”. Para nosotros cristianos, ese niño es Jesús, el Cristo, el Dios hecho hombre, el Dios con nosotros.

El Papa Francisco nunca ha cesado de manifestar su propia cercanía a todos aquellos que se han visto implicados en el conflicto de Tierra Santa, ni ha cesado nunca de gritar a los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad su exhortación a que se obre por la paz y se respete la sacralidad de cada una de las personas humanas. También se ha expresado así recientemente: “Estoy cerca de todos los que sufren, palestinos e israelíes. Los abrazo en este momento oscuro. Y rezo tanto por ellos. ¡Deténganse las armas –no traerán nunca la paz–, y no se extienda el conflicto! ¡Basta! ¡Basta, hermanos, basta!” (Ángelus, 12 de noviembre de 2023).

La peregrinación a Jerusalén cuenta con una historia antigua cuanto lo es el cristianismo, y no solo para los católicos. Esto se hace hoy posible gracias a la obra generosa de los franciscanos de la Custodia de la Tierra Santa y de las Iglesias Orientales allí presentes. Ellos mantienen y animan los santuarios, signos de la memoria de los pasos y de las acciones de Jesús, testigos materiales de un Dios que asumió la materia para salvarnos a nosotros, barro animado por el soplo del Espíritu. Por el trabajo fiel de ellos en aquellos lugares se continúa rezando incesantemente por el mundo entero.

Desde sus orígenes la Iglesia ha cultivado ininterrumpidamente y con pasión la solidaridad con la Iglesia de Jerusalén. En las épocas tardomedieval y moderna los Sumos Pontífices intervinieron en diversas ocasiones para promover y reglamentar la colecta en favor de los Santos Lugares. La última reforma la realizó el santo Papa Pablo VI con la Exhortación apostólica Nobis in animo. También el Papa Francisco con frecuencia ha subrayado la importancia de este gesto eclesial.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, no se trata de una pía tradición para pocos. En todo lugar en la Iglesia católica se convierte en una obligación para los fieles el ofrecer su ayuda en la así llamada Colecta Pontificia para la Tierra Santa, que se recoge el Viernes Santo o, para algunas áreas, en otro día del año. La haremos también este año, esperando en una particular generosidad por vuestra parte.

Y, ¿sabéis por qué? Porque, aparte de la custodia de los Santos Lugares que han visto a Jesús, están –todavía vivos y operantes, aun entre mil tragedias y dificultades, con frecuencia causadas por el egoísmo de los grandes de la tierra– los cristianos de la Tierra Santa. Muchos en la historia han muerto mártires por no ver cortadas las raíces de su antiquísima cristiandad. Sus Iglesias son parte integrante de la historia y de la cultura de Oriente.

Sin embargo, hoy muchos ya no consiguen resistir y abandonan los lugares donde sus padres y sus madres han rezado y han testimoniado el Evangelio. Dejan todo y huyen, porque no ven esperanza. Y lobos rapaces se dividen sus despojos.

Los cristianos de Irak, Siria, el Líbano, y de tantas otras tierras, se dirigen a nosotros y nos piden: “¡Ayudadnos a difundir todavía en Oriente el buen olor de Cristo!” (cfr. 2 Cor 2,15).

Yo me dirijo a vosotros para que su grito no quede desoído y el Santo Padre pueda sostener a las Iglesias locales para que encuentren con su ayuda nuevas vías, lugares donde habitar, puestos de trabajo, de formación escolar y profesional, para que permanezcan allí y no se pierdan en el desconocido mundo de Occidente, tan diverso de su modo de ser y en su modo de testimoniar la fe. Si se tuviesen que ir, si tuviesen que dejar en Jerusalén y en Palestina sus pequeños comercios, destinados a los peregrinos, que ya no van allí, el Oriente perdería parte de su alma, quizá para siempre.

¡Haced que sientan el corazón solidario de la Iglesia!

A las Iglesias locales, a los franciscanos, a los tantos voluntarios de la caridad, verdaderos hijos de la paz, testigos del Príncipe de la paz, expreso el agradecimiento del Papa Francisco, como también a todos vosotros por la oración y la contribución a favor de la Tierra Santa y de todos aquellos que la habitan.

El Señor os bendiga y os recompense. Gracias también a cada uno de los Obispos que se empeñarán de corazón en esta santa iniciativa.

Gracias en nombre de quien llora y de quien muere por la locura de la guerra. Gracias, sobre todo, en nombre de quienes han perdido a sus niños o los han visto quedar horriblemente mutilados. ¡Ayudadnos a ayudarles!

Quarta-Feira de Cinzas de 2024

Amado Irmão no episcopado,

“E agora os nossos pés param às tuas portas, Jerusalém”. Como desejaríamos que as palavras do salmo 122 fossem a descrição do que acontece nos dias de hoje! Mas não; tantos peregrinos continuam afastados da cidade dos seus sonhos, enquanto os habitantes da Terra Santa continuam a sofrer e a morrer. Em todo o mundo ressoa o rumor das armas portadoras de morte. E não se vislumbra uma trégua, mesmo se Deus nos assegurou que “todo o calçado que levava o guerreiro no tumulto da batalha e todo o manto revolvido em sangue, serão queimados, servindo de combustível ao fogo”. Esta a profecia de Isaías (9, 4). Vimos e continuamos a ver homens armados espalhar sangue e matar a própria vida. E, no entanto, o versículo sucessivo de Isaías anunciava que “um menino nos será dado […] o Príncipe da paz”. Para nós cristãos aquele menino é Jesus, o Cristo, o Deus feito homem, o Deus connosco.

O Papa Francisco nunca cessou de manifestar a própria vizinhança a todos aqueles que se viram prisioneiros no conflito da Terra Santa e gritar aos homens e às mulheres de boa vontade a própria exortação a trabalhar pela paz e a respeitar a sacralidade de cada pessoa humana. Ainda recentemente se exprimiu assim: “Estou próximo a todos quantos sofrem, Palestinenses e Israelitas. Abraço-os neste momento escuro. E rezo tanto por eles. Que as armas se calem, nunca levarão à paz, e que o conflito não se alargue! Basta! Basta, Irmãos, basta!” (Angelus, 12 de Novembro de 2023).

A peregrinação a Jerusalém tem uma história tão antiga como o cristianismo e não só para os Católicos. Isto é ainda hoje possível graças à atividade generosa dos Franciscanos da Custódia da Terra Santa e das Igrejas Orientais ali presentes. Estes mantêm e animam os santuários, sinais da memória dos passos e das ações de Jesus, testemunhas materiais de um Deus que assume a matéria para nos salvar, barro animado pelo sopro do Espírito Santo. Por causa da sua dedicação, naqueles lugares continua-se a rezar incessantemente pelo mundo inteiro.

Desde as suas origens a Igreja cultivou ininterruptamente e com paixão a solidariedade com a Igreja de Jerusalém. Em época tardo-medieval e moderna, diversas vezes os Sumos Pontífices intervieram para promover e regulamentar a coleta em favor dos Lugares Santos. A última vez foi reformada pelo santo Papa Paulo VI em 1974 através da Exortação Apostólica Nobis in Animo. Também o Papa Francisco sublinhou frequentemente a importância deste gesto eclesial.

Caros irmãos e irmãs, não se trata de uma piedosa tradição de poucos. Por toda a parte na Igreja Católica é obrigação dos fiéis oferecer a sua ajuda na chamada Coleta Pontifícia para a Terra Santa que se recolhe na Sexta-feira Santa ou – em algumas regiões – noutro dia do ano. Fazemo-lo também este ano, esperando na vossa particular generosidade.

E sabeis porquê? Porque, para além da custódia dos Lugares Santos que viram Jesus, existem ainda vivos e operantes, mesmo entre mil tragédias e dificuldades frequentemente causadas pelo egoísmo dos grandes da terra, os cristãos da Terra Santa. Muitos na história morreram mártires para não ver arrancadas as raízes da sua antiquíssima cristandade. As suas Igrejas são parte integrante da história e da cultura do Oriente.

Mas hoje muitos deles não conseguem resistir mais e abandonam os lugares onde os seus pais e as suas mães rezaram e testemunharam o Evangelho. Deixam tudo e fogem, porque não veem esperança. E lobos rapaces dividem o que deles resta.

Os cristãos do Iraque, da Síria e do Líbano e de tantas outras terras dirigem-se a nós pedindo: “Ajudem-nos a difundir ainda no Oriente o bom perfume de Cristo” (2 Cor 2, 15). 

Eu dirijo-me a vós para que o seu grito não fique por escutar e o Santo Padre possa sustentar as Igrejas locais a encontrar novas vias, ocasiões de habitação, de trabalho, de formação académica e profissional, para que permaneçam e não se percam no mundo desconhecido de um Ocidente, tão diverso da sua sensibilidade e do seu modo de testemunhar a fé. Se partirem, se em Jerusalém e na Palestina deixarem os seus pequenos comércios destinados aos peregrinos que deixarão de ir lá, o Oriente perderá parte da sua alma, talvez para sempre.

Fazei com que sintam o coração solidário da Igreja!

Às Igrejas locais, aos Franciscanos, aos numerosos voluntários da caridade, verdadeiros filhos da paz, testemunhas do Príncipe da paz, exprimo o obrigado do Papa Francisco, como a todos vós, pela vossa oração e pelo vosso contributo para a Terra Santa e para todos os que nela habitam.

O Senhor vos abençoe e vos recompense. Obrigado também a cada um dos Bispos que tiverem a peito esta santa iniciativa.

Obrigado em nome de quem chora e de quem morre por causa da loucura da guerra. Obrigado sobretudo em nome de quem perdeu os seus filhos ou os vê horrivelmente mutilados. Ajudai-nos a ajudá-los!

Anno 2023

Introduzione

La“Colletta per la Terra Santa” nasce dalla volontà dei Pontefici di mantenere forte il legame tra tutti i Cristiani del mondo e i Luoghi Santi. È la fonte principale per il sostentamento della vita che si svolge intorno ai Luoghi Santi e lo strumento che la Chiesa si è data per mettersi a fianco delle comunità ecclesiali del Medio Oriente. Nei tempi più recenti, Papa Paolo VI, attraverso l’Esortazione Apostolica ‘Nobis in Animo’ (25 marzo 1974), diede una spinta decisiva in favore della Terra Santa, da Lui visitata nello storico pellegrinaggio del 1964.

La Custodia Francescana attraverso la Colletta può sostenere e portare avanti l’importante missione a cui è chiamata: custodire i Luoghi Santi, le pietre della memoria, e favorire la presenza cristiana, le pietre vive di Terra Santa, attraverso tante attività di solidarietà, come ad esempio il mantenimento delle strutture pastorali, educative, assistenziali, sanitarie e sociali.

I territori che beneficiano sotto diverse forme di un sostegno proveniente dalla Colletta sono i seguenti: Gerusalemme, Palestina, Israele, Giordania, Cipro, Siria, Libano, Egitto, Etiopia, Eritrea, Turchia, Iran e Iraq.

Di norma, la Custodia di Terra Santa riceve il 65% della Colletta, mentre il restante 35% va al Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali, che lo utilizza per la formazione dei candidati al sacerdozio, il sostentamento del clero, l’attività scolastica, la formazione culturale e i sussidi alle diverse circoscrizioni ecclesiastiche in Medio Oriente.

In sintesi riportiamo quanto il Dicastero ha ricevuto nel 2023 e come è stato distribuito:

Le offerte pervenute nell’anno 2023 per la Colletta di Terra Santa

Formazione Accademica, Spirituale e Umana dei Seminaristi e Sacerdoti delle Chiese poste sotto la giurisdizione della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali

Grazie alla Colletta si può provvedere a devolvere contributi ai seminari, alle case di formazione religiosa e istituzioni culturali nei territori di competenza, sostenendo sotto varie forme (borse di studio, tasse universitarie e ogni altra necessità sanitaria) anche a Roma, giovani seminaristi e sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose e, compatibilmente con i fondi disponibili, alcuni laici. Il collegio aperto sei anni fa per ospitare le religiose che provengono da diversi paesi orientali, accoglie quest’anno 28 consacrate, su un totale di 230 studenti, che beneficiano della borsa di studio, ospiti in tutti e 7 collegi di competenza del Dicastero.

Non va dimenticato il contributo al sostentamento del Pontificio Istituto Orientale, istituzione accademica superiore con due facoltà, Scienze Ecclesiastiche Orientali e Diritto Canonico Orientale, di cui è Gran Cancelliere il Prefetto, come pure il sostegno al Comitato per la Collaborazione Culturale che sviluppa la sua attività in ambito ecumenico.

Sussidi per l’attività Scolastica

La Diocesi Patriarcale di Gerusalemme dei Latini, la Custodia Francescana, oltre alle altre Chiese e gli Istituti Religiosi sono impegnati per la formazione scolastica dei giovani della Terra Santa, ed insieme al Segretariato di Solidarietà sono sostenuti dai proventi della Colletta.

Una tra le prestigiose fondazioni che assicura la formazione accademica è la Bethlehem University. Quasi 3300 giovani, musulmani e cristiani, vengono formati intellettualmente e umanamente con la speranza di impegnarsi nella costruzione di un Paese dove regni rispetto reciproco e dove sia preservata la dignità umana. È apprezzabile l’impegno dei Fratelli de La Salle nella conduzione dell’Università.

Sussidi Ordinari e Straordinari

Il Dicastero sostiene le Chiese poste sotto la sua competenza, con sussidi ordinari e straordinari, attinti dalla Colletta Terra Santa: tali finanziamenti contribuiscono alla vita quotidiana di tutte le Circoscrizioni.

Dopo il terremoto del 6 febbraio dell’anno scorso - che ha colpito duramente le regioni nord-occidentali della Siria, con edifici crollati ad Aleppo, Lattakia ed Idlib, come anche le regioni meridionale e centrale della Turchia - la Siria e Turchia si stanno riprendendo. La Conferenza Episcopale in collaborazione con la Caritas Turchia ha già avviato alcuni progetti con i contributi ricevuti da vari benefattori, specialmente per la ricostruzione delle abitazioni, restauri delle chiese e case religiose.

In Siria la situazione è molto più grave, vista la condizione precaria in cui versava il Paese già prima del terremoto. Il Dicastero, in collaborazione con la Nunziatura Apostolica in Siria, ha fatto un appello per sostenere la popolazione colpita dal terremoto. Il Comitato di Emergenza della Chiesa in Siria ha preparato un progetto a sostegno delle famiglie in difficoltà per affrontare l’inverno nel miglior modo possibile. Le regioni che ne beneficeranno sono quelle di Aleppo e Lattakia. I beneficiari totali del progetto sono circa 7000 persone e il budget totale è di $1.000.000,00 per una durata di 9 -12 mesi. Il Dicastero, su richiesta del Rappresentante Pontificio in Siria, ha finora trasferito 600.000,00 US$ a questo scopo.

Lo scoppio della Guerra in Gaza, dopo gli avvenimenti del 7 ottobre scorso, ha paralizzato la Terra Santa. La mancanza di pellegrini e turisti ha messo in difficoltà migliaia di famiglie. Il Dicastero sta seguendo lo sviluppo della situazione, dimostrando la propria vicinanza attraverso la Delegazione Apostolica a Gerusalemme, il Patriarcato Latino e la Custodia di Terra Santa. Il Santo Padre ha l’intenzione di realizzare un progetto con finalità umanitarie in Gaza o Cisgiordania che possa aiutare la popolazione a riprendere una vita più dignitosa e che possa creare opportunità di lavoro, a guerra finita. Questo progetto potrebbe essere realizzato con le offerte dei fedeli di tutto il mondo che partecipano alla Colletta per la Terra Santa.

DICASTERY FOR THE EASTERN CHURCHES

2023 A.D.

Introduction

The Collection “Pro Terra Sancta” was born out of the desire of the Popes to maintain a strong bond between the faithful across the world and the Holy Places. It is the main source of material support for Christian life in the Holy Land and a tool for the universal Church to express solidarity with the ecclesial communities of the Middle East. In recent times, Saint Paul VI gave a significant boost to supporting the Holy Land with the Apostolic Exhortation ‘Nobis in Animo’ (March 25, 1974).

Through the funds traditionally collected on Good Friday, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land is able to carry out the important mission to which it is called: preserving the Sacred Places, the stones of memory, and promoting the Christian presence, the living stones, through its many pastoral, educational, welfare, health and social facilities.

The territories that benefit from the Collection are Jerusalem, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

As a rule, the Custody of the Holy Land receives 65% of the Collection, while the remaining 35% goes to the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, which is used for the formation of candidates to priesthood, the support of clergy, educational activities, cultural formation and for subsidies to the several ecclesiastical Circumscriptions in the Middle East.

This report is a synthesis of what the Dicastery received in 2023 and how it was distributed.

Academic, Spiritual and Human Formation of the Seminarians and Priests of the Churches under the Jurisdiction of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches

Thanks to the Collection, contributions can be made to seminaries, religious houses of formation and cultural institutions in the relevant territories and even in Rome, supporting in various forms (scholarships, university fees and health care) young seminarians and priests, men and women religious and, depending on the funds available, some lay people. The college, which was opened five years ago to host nuns who come from various Eastern countries, this year welcomes 27 consecrated women, out of a total of 252 students, who benefit from the scholarship, and are hosted in all 7 colleges under the jurisdiction of the Dicastery.

In addition, the Dicastery contributes to the support of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, a higher academic institution with two faculties, Eastern Ecclesiastical Sciences and Eastern Canon Law, of which the Cardinal Prefect is the Grand Chancellor, as well as to supporting the Committee for Cultural Collaboration, which develops activities in the ecumenical field.

Subsidies for Educational Activities

The Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custody, the Eastern Churches of the Holy Land and Religious Institutes are committed to the education of young people in the Holy Land.

One of the prestigious foundations that ensures academic formation is Bethlehem University. Almost 3,300 young people, mostly Palestinian Muslims, are trained intellectually and humanly in the hope they will engage in building a country where mutual respect reigns and where human dignity is preserved. The commitment of the De La Salle Brothers in running the university is highly appreciated.

Ordinary and Extraordinary Subsidies

The Dicastery contributes to supporting the Churches under its jurisdiction with subsidies drawn from the Holy Land Collection: they contribute to the daily life of all the Circumscriptions.

After the earthquake of February 6 last year – which hit the northwestern regions of Syria hard, with buildings collapsing in Aleppo, Lattakia and Idlib, as well as the southern and central regions of Turkey – Syria and Turkey are recovering. The Episcopal Conference in collaboration with Caritas Turkey has already started some projects with contributions received from various benefactors, especially for the reconstruction of homes, restoration of churches and religious houses.

In Syria, the situation is much more serious, given the precarious condition of the country even before the earthquake. The Dicastery, in collaboration with the Apostolic Nunciature in Syria, made an appeal to support the population affected by the earthquake. The Emergency Committee of the Church in Syria has prepared a project to support families in difficulty to face the winter in the best possible way. The regions that will benefit from it are those of Aleppo and Lattakia. The total beneficiaries of the project are approximately 7000 people and the total budget is $1,000,000.00 for a duration of 9 to 12 months. The Dicastery, at the request of the Papal Representative in Syria, has so far transferred US$600,000.00 for this purpose.

The outbreak of the War in Gaza, after the events of October 7, paralysed the Holy Land. The lack of pilgrims and tourists has put thousands of families in difficulty. The Dicastery is following the development of the situation, demonstrating its closeness through the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem, the Latin Patriarchate and the Custody of the Holy Land. The Holy Father intends to carry out a project with humanitarian purposes in Gaza or the West Bank, which can help the population resume a more dignified life and create job opportunities once the war is over. This project could be realised with the offerings of the faithful from all over the world who participate in the Collection for the Holy Land.

Rapporto sommario 2022/2023

La Custodia di Terra Santa da secoli si impegna nella conservazione e la rivitalizzazione dei luoghi santi del cristianesimo nella Terra di Gesù e in tutto il Medio Oriente. Tra i vari obiettivi della missione francescana, si ricordano il sostegno e lo sviluppo della minoranza cristiana che vi abita, la conservazione e valorizzazione di aree archeologiche e santuari, l’intervento nei casi di emergenza, la liturgia nei luoghi di culto, le opere apostoliche e l’assistenza ai pellegrini. Anche per il biennio 2022/2023, la presenza francescana in Terra Santa, si è manifestata attraverso la progettazione, programmazione e l’esecuzione dei seguenti progetti e opere:

Le opere elencate sono state realizzate grazie a vari tipi di contributi economici, in primo luogo la Colletta del Venerdì Santo, poi le attività di fundraising della Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) e associazione Pro Terra Sancta (PTS), ma anche di altri donatori privati e istituzionali, così come dagli introiti delle attività svolte.

Grazie a Dio, qui a Gerusalemme come nel resto del mondo, il Covid-19 ha ridotto molto il suo potenziale distruttivo e i suoi effetti non impediscono più la circolazione delle persone. Questo stava consentendo una progressiva ripresa dell’afflusso dei pellegrini, con un certo sollievo economico per le famiglie dei cristiani e anche per la Custodia. Tuttavia, il recente aggravarsi del conflitto bellico che interessa Palestina e Israele a partire dal 7 Ottobre 2023 (la Striscia di Gaza in modo particolare, ma con conseguenze in tutto il West Bank e Gerusalemme e per quel che riguarda i pellegrini anche tutto Israele), ha portato all’improvvisa cancellazione di tutti i pellegrinaggi in corso e in programma, alla chiusura di tutti i checkpoint con impossibilità per i lavoratori del West Bank di entrare a Gerusalemme, e alla difficoltà per tutti di vivere e muoversi in sicurezza sull’intero territorio. Ciononostante, continua la missione che ci è stata affidata sapendo che la Divina Provvidenza, che qui ci ha voluti, non cessa di prendersi cura di noi.

§ Avviato un progetto di collaborazione tra l’istituto di musica Magnificat e la Fondazione Andrea Bocelli (ABF) per l’istituzione di un nuovo coro a Gerusalemme. I locali di Dar al Consul sono utilizzati per le prove settimanali del coro, mentre nei locali di Moussa Afendi, di fronte a Dar al Consul, si trova la sede della fondazione per attività di coordinamento, laboratorio musicale, ecc.

NB: Nella realizzazione delle opere, pur comportando un fattore di complicazione per via dei permessi da richiedere, è stato privilegiato l’impiego di manodopera proveniente dal West Bank per dare lavoro a cristiani di un territorio che non beneficia né di welfare né di ammortizzatori sociali e che in questi ultimi anni, tra la situazione di conflitto e i vari lockdown, sarebbero rimasti totalmente privi di risorse economiche.

Ulteriori complicazioni durante il recente conflitto che ha comportato la chiusura dei checkpoint per quasi due mesi. Ove possibile, gli operai sono stati impiegati nei santuari e nei conventi del West Bank.

Appartamenti per i bisognosi e le giovani coppie

Sono numerose le case di proprietà della Custodia di Terra Santa, alla quale gli inquilini pagano affitti simbolici. Si tratta in genere di aree sovraffollate, dove in piccoli appartamenti convivono spesso diversi nuclei familiari. Ogni anno la Custodia interviene per mantenere e migliorare le condizioni delle abitazioni, cercando al contempo di creare ulteriori abitazioni per sostenere la comunità locale.

Di seguito le abitazioni su cui si è lavorato nel biennio 2022-2023:

- Ogni anno la Custodia di Terra Santa sostiene economicamente la Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme.

- Formazione di 62 studenti in scienze bibliche presso lo Studium Biblicum Franciscanum provenienti da varie parte del mondo e da province religiose e diocesi povere, ai quali la Custodia garantisce vitto e alloggio e una borsa di studio. Essi saranno destinati all’insegnamento della Sacra Scrittura in vari paesi del mondo.

§ Christian Media Center (CMC) – Gerusalemme/nazareth

I servizi offerti comprendono:

- Website, completamente rinnovato, semplificato nell’uso ed ora mobile friendly.

- Terra Santa News, notiziario settimanale che racconta fede, storia, attualità della Terra Santa; trasmesso da circa 35 emittenti nel mondo in 10 lingue (da quest’anno anche in cinese).

§ Istituto di Musica Magnificat – Gerusalemme

- L’istituto Magnificat è affiliato al Conservatorio di Vicenza il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale e internazionale.

- Accoglie più di 220 studenti cristiani, musulmani ed ebrei, guidati da circa 30 professori anche essi ebrei, cristiani e musulmani.

Gerusalemme

§ Supporto ad Opere di Carità Cristiane

1) Franciscan Sisters School (Gerico): la scuola, gestita dalle Suore Francescane Missionarie del Cuore Immacolato di Maria, è una delle scuole più frequentate della città di Gerico. Ad oggi la scuola ospita più di 500 bambini/e e ragazze (dai 4 ai 14 anni), che frequentano asilo, elementari e scuole medie. I bambini/e dell’asilo ed elementari frequentano classi miste, le medie invece sono solo femminili.

Descrizione Progetto

ProTS ha supportato la scuola, gestita da tre Suore ed uno Staff di circa 42 persone, con la ristrutturazione dell’area giochi esterna della scuola.

Beneficiari raggiunti

Più di 500 bambini/e e ragazze dai 4 ai 14 anni.

2) Convento di Saint Vincent De Paul (Mamilla, Gerusalemme): all’interno del Monastero di St. Vincent de Paul, 4 Sorelle della Carità di San Vincenzo de Paoli si occupano di un asilo e di un centro per persone con disabilità. L’asilo accoglie più di 200 bambini dai tre mesi ai quattro anni. Le famiglie dei bambini pagano un prezzo molto inferiore rispetto agli asili di Gerusalemme e creano un ambiente vivace e multiculturale, rappresentando circa otto diverse nazionalità. Quest’attività è importante per le famiglie dei dintorni poiché l’asilo è aperto 7 giorni su 7, rispettando le festività cristiane, mussulmane ed ebraiche. Il piano terra del Convento ospita la Nursing Home Rehabilitation, una residenza che ospita circa 30 persone con disabilità fisiche e/o disturbi mentali ed anziani che non possono ricevere cura ed assistenza dalle famiglie.

ProTS nel 2019 ha ristrutturato alcuni locali in stato di abbandono all’interno del Convento ed ha aperto la Dar Mamilla Guesthouse, il cui obiettivo non è solo quello di ospitare visitatori da tutto il mondo, ma anche di aiutare il lavoro delle Suore della Carità di San Vincenzo de Paoli. Una parte delle entrate della Dar Mamilla Guesthouse è sempre andata a sostegno delle loro attività e dei lavori di ristrutturazione dei locali del Convento.

Circa 30 persone con disabilità fisiche e/o disturbi mentali.

3) Jerusalem African Community Center (JACC) (Jaffa Street, Gerusalemme): è un centro di supporto e di comunità per circa 3000 richiedenti asilo provenienti da Eritrea, Sudan ed Etiopia, tra cui molte famiglie con bambini, che si trovano a Gerusalemme. Il centro fornisce sostegno e supporto ai rifugiati attraverso supporto legale, psicologico, l’organizzazione di corsi di formazione e la distribuzione di beni di prima necessità per le famiglie più bisognose. La condizione in cui vivono le famiglie di richiedenti asilo in Israele è di estrema vulnerabilità socioeconomica, essendo bloccati in un limbo nel quale la richiesta d’asilo non viene né accettata né rigettata e quindi non godono di alcun diritto né tutela.

ProTS supporta la comunità di JACC da anni contribuendo a coprire i salari dello staff del centro e fornendo supporto nella scrittura e presentazione di progetti. Nel 2023 è stato presentato un progetto attraverso il bando ordinario della Chiesa Evangelica Valdese che è stato approvato ed è in fase di implementazione per l’organizzazione di corsi di formazione professionale, tra i quali corsi di cucito, di lingua inglese, ebraico, acquisizione delle competenze (scrittura CV, computer, ecc) e sessioni di assistenza legale e supporto psicosociale.

Circa 7 membri dello staff e circa 100 tra volontari e collaboratori esterni.

4) Saint Louis French Hospital (New Gate, Gerusalemme Est): è un ospedale che appartiene alla Congregazione delle Suore di San Giuseppe dell'Apparizione. L'ospedale è specializzato nella fornitura di cure palliative ai malati terminali con una capienza totale di 57 posti letto, suddivisi tra reparto di geriatria; geriatria complicata; ed oncologia. L’ospedale offre inoltre trattamenti ai malati di HIV.

In collaborazione con lo staff ed il Direttore Alex Hadweh si è concluso un progetto di ristrutturazione del salone di parrucchiere a disposizione dei pazienti dell’ospedale.

5) Home Notre-Dame Des Douleurs (Abu Dis, Gerusalemme Est): la Congregazione delle Figlie della Madonna Addolorata gestisce la Casa di Notre Dame des Douleurs, che accoglie le persone più ai margini della società e se ne prende cura, fornendo servizi, pasti ed attività ricreazionali (esercizi fisici, passeggiate in giardino, laboratori artigianali e giochi di società). La maggior parte degli ospiti è palestinese, tuttavia, sono presenti anche ospiti di nazionalità siriana, libanese o etiope. Oggi (dati del 2022), nella Casa di Notre Dame, vivono 4 Suore della Congregazione delle Figlie della Madonna Addolorata e circa 40 ospiti accolti. Inoltre, un medico del Saint Joseph Hospital, visita regolarmente la Casa di Notre Dame una volta alla settimana.

ProTS supporta le famiglie povere in situazione di difficoltà socio-economica attraverso il sostegno per il pagamento delle spese di affitto, spese per interventi medici e medicine ed altre varie a supporto di familiari in emergenza sociale con a carico anziani e disabili non autosufficienti.

§ Supporto PSS a bambini e adolescenti a Gerusalemme

Descrizione Progetto

In collaborazione con lo Spafford Children’s Center è stata riscontrata la necessità di attivare un programma integrato di protezione di trattamento del trauma; supporto psicosociale e gestione della rabbia e dello stress per bambini/e; giovani e genitori della durata di 12 mesi. A Gerusalemme, a causa della pericolosità di molti quartieri di Gerusalemme Est e paura delle famiglie, i bambini/e ed adolescenti si trovano spesso chiusi in casa da settimane e isolati. A questo si aggiungono i crescenti episodi di violenza e soprusi. Le attività in fase di implementazione sono sessioni di trattamento del trauma e gestione della rabbia e dello stress all’interno del centro e all’interno di alcune scuole di Gerusalemme Est.

§ Progetto Terra Sancta Museum

Descrizione Progetto

Terra Sancta Museum (TSM): A Community Living Museum for Palestinian Youth: il progetto affronta le vulnerabilità dei bambini e degli adolescenti della città vecchia di Gerusalemme Est totalmente separata dai suoi dintorni palestinesi. Obiettivo del progetto è la creazione di uno spazio protetto per la crescita culturale e identitaria dei giovani palestinesi di Gerusalemme Est, che si trovano in una condizione di isolamento culturale. Negli spazi della sezione archeologica del Terra Sancta Museum, e attraverso le sue collezioni, il progetto sviluppa attività educative rivolte alle scuole, alle famiglie ed ai giovani locali. Il progetto è realizzato in partnership con Studium Biblicum Franciscano e Ufficio Patrimonio Culturale CTS.

Sebastia Samaria

§ Supporto ai giovani di Sabastia - Mosaic Centre

Descrizione Progetto

In assenza di turisti che ospitano la foresteria e con i posti di blocco che impediscono di uscire dal villaggio per cercare lavoro, la comunità di Sebastia, specialmente le fasce più giovani della popolazione, sta vivendo una situazione di estrema incertezza e vulnerabilità a causa della guerra in corso a Gaza e la crescente violenza dei coloni israeliani che abitano le colonie intorno al villaggio. In questo contesto, proTS vuole offrire ai ragazzi la possibilità di svolgere attività ricreative ed educative, per continuare a sperare in un futuro in cui il dialogo e la convivenza siano ancora possibili. L’azione prevede l’organizzazione di un corso di allenamento di calcio per la preparazione dei giovani partecipanti alle competizioni sportive. Il progetto è realizzato in partnership con il Mosaic Centre.

§ Betania, Casa dell’Amicizia

Descrizione Progetto

Il progetto prevede la formazione e la conservazione del patrimonio culturale, al servizio delle istituzioni accademiche e della comunità palestinese: finanziato dalla Cooperazione Italiana (AICS), in partnership con il Mosaic Centre, l’Al Quds University, l’Università degli Studi di Palermo, l’Università di Torino e la Al Hana Women Association, il progetto ha l’obiettivo di contribuire alla protezione e la salvaguardia del patrimonio culturale di Betania per favorire uno sviluppo sociale ed economico inclusivo che promuova la cultura, il turismo sostenibile ed i prodotti locali.

§ Centro di Ascolto e di Orientamento al lavoro Pro Terra Sancta

Descrizione progetto

È attivo a Betlemme un centro di ascolto e orientamento al lavoro per fornire assistenza medica (accesso a cure mediche di base, operazioni e ricoveri ospedalieri e trattamenti medici specifici) e sociale alla popolazione più vulnerabile dell’area in collaborazione con altre organizzazioni che fanno parte del suo network. Il centro di ascolto impiega un assistente sociale senior e uno junior e le richieste di assistenza vengono valutate mensilmente da un comitato predisposto di cui fa parte anche un membro esterno all’organizzazione.

444 persone si sono recate al centro di ascolto e sono state accolte e prese in carico dal personale di ProTS o riferite a organizzazioni parte del network.

250 persone hanno beneficiato di sostegno per assistenza medica o sociale.

25 giovani hanno partecipato a vocational training e 27 giovani sono stati sostenuti attraverso il programma di orientamento al lavoro, in collaborazione con 15 istituzioni e piccole medie imprese.

70 famiglie povere verranno supportate attraverso l’erogazione di un contributo per le festività natalizie.

§ Emergenza Case e Acqua

Sempre attraverso il centro di ascolto vengono accolte le richieste per interventi di riabilitazione di abitazioni danneggiate e insalubri e installazione water tanks e pannelli solari.

§ Supporto all’educazione

Descrizione progetto

Attraverso il sostegno a distanza viene garantita l’istruzione di alcuni bambini che frequentano le Scuole di Terra Santa (Saint Joseph e Terra Sancta College), Rosary Sisters School e SIRA School. Inoltre sono state supportate alcune famiglie per il pagamento delle rette scolastiche o universitarie.

Pro Terra Sancta a Betlemme gestisce due guesthouse (Dar al Majus e Dar Essideh) entrambe nel centro storico. Inoltre, è attivo un bazaar equo e solidale che conta una rete di oltre 30 fornitori che sono principalmente organizzazioni che garantiscono un lavoro a donne vulnerabili o persone con disabilità.

§ DAMJ creative lab

Descrizione progetto

ProTS presso i vecchi uffici ha attivato un laboratorio creativo che supporta alcune piccole realtà imprenditoriali nello sviluppo dei prodotti e dell’identità di brand e del logo. Inoltre, sostiene le istituzioni e le opere che vogliono sviluppare delle produzioni per favorire la sostenibilità.

§ Attività culturali – Dar Al Majus Community Centre

Descrizione progetto

Presso Dar Al Majus e in collaborazione con altre realtà locali, ProTS organizza attività culturali rivolte alla comunità di Betlemme di vario tipo: rassegne letterarie, laboratori di scrittura, concerti, workshop di cucina, performance teatrali etc.

Circa 600 membri della comunità locale che hanno preso parte alle attività e agli eventi culturali.

Circa 350 bambini che hanno preso parte ad attività culturali e workshops.

§ Supporto altre opere di carità

1) Sostegno Hogar Nino Dios – rifacimento piscina e inizio fisioterapia in acqua.

Descrizione progetto

In collaborazione con i religiosi del Verbo Incarnato si è appena concluso un progetto di riabilitazione della piscina per svolgere attività fisioterapiche in acqua. Sono state inoltre ristrutturate le docce, è stato aggiunto un boiler per l’acqua ed è stata comprata l’attrezzatura per la fisioterapia. Nell’ambito del progetto di orientamento al lavoro è stata anche inserita la figura di una fisioterapista a supporto dello staff e delle suore per un periodo di sei mesi a partire da ottobre 2023. Inoltre, proTS ha messo a disposizione dell’opera un volontario per 11 mesi.

2) Sostegno Società Caritatevole Antoniana e Suore dell’Hortus Conclusus

Descrizione progetto

La collaborazione consiste in attuazione di lavori di ristrutturazione e miglioria degli istituti, supporto allo staff attraverso training, fornitura di medicine e attrezzature, supporto nelle spese correnti. In questa situazione di emergenza si sta lavorando per riattivare il Centro Diurno che prima della pandemia da covid-19 permetteva a circa 60 anziani di ricevere un pasto caldo e di svolgere delle attività aggregative. Le suore dell’Hortus Conclusus gestiscono anche un asilo ad Artas, sempre nel Governatorato di Betlemme, a cui sono state donate attrezzatura e materiale didattico.

3) Sostegno Casa del Fanciullo – corsi di lingua e sostegno psicologico

Descrizione progetto

ProTS ha attivato a Dar al Majus per i bambini della Casa del Fanciullo un corso di lingua italiana e spagnola e delle attività di sostegno psicosociale per fare fronte ai continui traumi a cui sono sottoposti.

20 bambini dagli 8 ai 17 orfani o con famiglie socialmente svantaggiate con problemi di dipendenze e/o violenza.

4) Istituto per sordi Effetà

Descrizione progetto

ProTS sta sostenendo la scuola con la partecipazione al pagamento di alcune rette per alcuni ragazzi provenienti dai villaggi più poveri e con il sostegno all’acquisto di ricambi per apparecchi acustici. La maggior parte degli studenti, infatti, non riesce a coprire i costi della retta annuale, pur essendo molto bassa. Nell’ambito del progetto di orientamento al lavoro è stata anche inserita la figura di un insegnante.

Descrizione progetto

ProTS sta sostenendo le Suore che ad Aida Camp hanno una guesthouse e un asilo nel pagamento di alcune spese urgenti e nel rifacimento dell’impianto fognario. Inoltre, attraverso il programma di orientamento al lavoro vengono garantite le cure assistenziali ad una delle suore non autosufficienti.

6) Catholic Action – riabilitazione playground e centro per anziani

Descrizione progetto

ProTS ha contribuito alla riabilitazione del parco giochi nel complesso dell’Azione Cattolica e al Centro di aggregazione per anziani. Inoltre, sostiene l’Azione Cattolica attraverso il programma di orientamento al lavoro.

7) Insegnamento italiano e latino a seminaristi e aspiranti frati

ProTS ha messo a disposizione dei volontari per l’insegnamento dell’italiano e del latino ad alcuni seminaristi del Seminario di Beit Jala e ad alcuni aspiranti frati della Custodia.

§ Sostegno alla Parrocchia Latina

Descrizione progetto

ProTS sostiene la parrocchia latina di Gaza City offrendo supporto per le attività parrocchiali e le necessità della comunità. Con lo scoppio della guerra l’aiuto si è intensificato per sostenere i bisogni primari della popolazione stremata dai bombardamenti e sfollata all’interno dei locali della parrocchia.

§ Bambini Farfalla di Gaza

Descrizione progetto

ProTS in collaborazione con la Caritas e la Parrocchia Latina porta avanti il progetto di assistenza medica ai “Bambini Farfalla” garantendo le cure di base e assistenza domiciliare per circa 30 bambini presenti nella Striscia e affetti da Epidermolisi Bollosa, una malattia genetica rara ed invalidante, che provoca bolle e lesioni in corrispondenza della pelle e delle mucose interne. In tutta la Striscia 65 pazienti hanno ricevuto una diagnosi di epidermolisi bollosa (37 maschi e 28 femmine) nel governatorato di Gaza City 19, nel Nord 9, nel centro 15, a Khan Younis e a Rafah 22 (Fonte: Chiesa cattolica).

Ha inoltre sostenuto la scuola pubblica in Jabal Weibdeh named ‘Balat Al-Sheehadah’ di Amman.

§ Centro di assistenza – Azizieh

Descrizione Progetto e attività

Distribuzione di cibo, assistenza medica, vouchers per acquistare gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini. Continua anche l’attività della cucina sociale, con ca. 20 tra staff, cuochi e volontari coinvolti, per preparare e offrire pasti caldi, venendo incontro all’aumento vertiginoso dei prezzi e alla mancanza pressoché totale dell’elettricità per permettere di cucinare nelle case. Aiuto incrementato post terremoto.

§ Franciscan Care Center – Aleppo TSC

Descrizione Progetto

Il centro di riabilitazione psicologica per bambini, denominato Franciscan Care Center, è in funzione presso alcuni dei locali del Terra Santa College e all’esterno, negli ampi spazi sistemati nel corso del 2023: sistemazione di due campi da calcio e uno da basket, copertura di due campi, ampio spazio per attività per i più piccoli e manutenzione piscina. Le attività spaziano dall’arte terapia, musicoterapia, sport, assistenza face to face, insegnamento di Inglese e Francese.

700 bambini e adolescenti iscritti e assistiti presso il centro di riabilitazione del Terra Sancta College; 270 bambini iscritti alla Terra Santa Accademy.

§ Franciscan Care Center – Centri di Aleppo est

Descrizione Progetto

Tre centri di aiuto e accoglienza aperti nella zona di Aleppo Est, in collaborazione con il Muftì e il Mukthar della zona, per assistere: i bambini e orfani nell zone povere e in forte stato di degrado; i bambini che dai 9-10 anni sono costretti a lasciare la scuola per lavorare; supporto e aiuto alle donne e madri di Aleppo est.

§ Franciscan Care Center

Descrizione Progetto

Il centro di riabilitazione psicologica per bambini, denominato Franciscan Care Center, ha continuato le sue attività anche durante il 2023 ad Hama, presso il complesso della chiesa della Vergina Immacolata dei Siriaci Cattolici di Hama.

Beneficiari raggiunti

200 bambini iscritti e assistiti presso il centro di riabilitazione di Hama, in maggioranza musulmani.

15 persone locali specializzate coinvolti (educatori, insegnanti, psicologi, allenatori, artisti).

Siria – Damasco

§ Centro di assistenza Damasco

Descrizione Progetto

Presso il centro Pro Terra Sancta è stato attivato un social/emergency center, il quale si occupa della distribuzione di vouchers per l’acquisto di cibo, medicine e supporto per le ricette mediche, gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini.

Il centro ha trovato un accordo con una decina di negozi alimentari e farmacie per l’acquisto attraverso vouchers e il successivo pagamento mensile. I beneficiari vengono individuati seguendo i seguenti criteri: situazione finanziaria e numero di componenti della famiglia; numero di bambini presenti nella famiglia e numero di anziani; vedove con bambini a carico; madri con marito in guerra.

Beneficiari raggiunti

650 famiglie supportate con food e non-food items ogni mese e 800 persone aiutate con assistenza medico/sanitaria e medicine; 200 famiglie con bambini neonati aiutate per spese latte/pannolini.

§ Progetto WIP e formazione, sviluppo e lavoro Damasco

Descrizione Progetto

Presso il centro Pro Terra Sancta è stato avviato uno sportello di aiuto al lavoro, che ha previsto l’offerta di un corso di formazioni per badanti, con successivo inserimento lavorativo, e un corso di formazione di business startup offerto a giovani selezionati con successivo grant di supporto alle idee più originali e sostenibili.

40 giovani formati nell’ambito delle business startup e 15 aiutati con un fondo per far partire le proprie attività.

20 giovani caregivers formati e che lavorano presso famiglie di anziani e strutture hospice a Damasco.

§ Centro di accoglienza e assistenza medica - Tabbaleh

Descrizione Progetto

Supporto e aiuto alle attività di assistenza per i malati accolti presso il centro francescano di Tabbaleh. Il complesso possiede 24 stanze, e da alcuni anni ospita malati gravi che devono sostenere trattamenti medici di lungo periodo presso ospedali a Damasco: copertura di parte dei trattamenti medici; acquisto di medicine e copertura spese stanze della struttura; spese per garantire un pasto al giorno. Si intende aumentare il numero di malati aiutati e assistiti.

§ Supporto ai bambini di Damasco: Asilo del Memoriale - Tabbaleh

Descrizione Progetto

Supporto e aiuto all’asilo di Tabbaleh della Custodia di TS gestito dalle suore francescane del CIM. L’asilo si trova presso alcuni locali del complesso del convento dei francescani. Consta di 6 classi per i bambini dai 2,5 ai 5 anni, per un totale di 140 bambini, 10 maestre e 2 impiegati per segreteria/pulizie.

§ Franciscan Music Center - Tabbaleh Damasco

Descrizione Progetto

Il Franciscan Music Center, scuola di musica sorta e strutturata nei locali in disuso del complesso del convento della Custodia di TS. Il centro è nato in collaborazione con un pianista locale e direttore del “Centro di armonia per l'educazione musicale di Damasco”. Sono proposti ai bambini e ragazzini siriani corsi di chitarra, pianoforte, violino e batteria. ProTS sostiene i costi correnti, l’acquisto di strumenti musicali e parte degli stipendi degli insegnanti.

§ Supporto psicologico per giovani e bambini – Tabbaleh Damasco

§ Asilo di San George - Maaloula

Descrizione Progetto

Maaloula è un piccolo villaggio nel governatorato di Rif Dimashq a 56 km a nord-est di Damasco. L’asilo di St. George è all’interno del complesso della chiesa cattolica greco-melchita St. George e rappresenta l’unica realtà educativa rivolta ai più piccoli ancora funzionante nell’area. L’edificio è molto modesto e ad oggi l’asilo consiste in 5 classi e dei bagni adiacenti. Anche nel 2023 sostenuti i costi correnti della struttura e coperture economiche per alcune famiglie che non riescono a pagare la retta mensile.

§ Progetto Quartiere e Santuario di Sant’Anania - Damasco

Descrizione Progetto

ProTS ha contribuito al rilancio dell’area di Sant’Anania, con il recupero di 7 case-abitazioni e della piazza principale antistante il santuario. Avvio studio per lavori di ristrutturazione dell’area Santuario.

La popolazione del quartiere cristiano di Damasco e i potenziali futuri pellegrini.

Siria – Knaye e Yacoubieh

§ Centro di assistenza - Knaye e Yacoubieh (provincia di Idlib)

Descrizione Progetto

Presso il convento di Knaye, si è attivato un social/emergency center, il quale si occupa della distribuzione di cibo, medicine, vouchers per acquistare gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini. E’ stato inoltre attivato un progetto di aiuto e assistenza post- terremoto, che ha visto la copertura dei costi di riparazione delle chiese a Knaye e Yacoubieh, e di molte case.

240 famiglie supportate con acqua, elettricità, riscaldamento (famiglie cristiane e musulmane).

60 bambini e rispettive famiglie; 65 studenti e 11 insegnanti locali.

80 case riparate.

Siria – Latakia

§ Centro di assistenza – Latakia

Descrizione Progetto

Presso il convento francescano di Lattakia è attivo un social/emergency center, il quale si occupa della distribuzione di cibo, medicine e assistenza medica, vouchers per acquistare gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini.

Beneficiari raggiunti

420 famiglie aiutate con food e non food items, affitto mensile casa; 45 ricevono latte e pannolini.

130 persone al mese aiutate con medicine e assistenza sanitaria.

150 studenti e rispettive famiglie.

§ Centro di assistenza e Dispensario medico – Latakia

Descrizione Progetto

In collaborazione con AVSI e la nunziatura apostolica a Damasco, è stato attivato all’interno del centro un dispensario medico, con distribuzione di medicine e sistema di referrals ad altre strutture mediche e dottori.

500 persone aiutate con visite mediche gratuite e con distribuzioni di medicine settimanali.

§ Centro di assistenza supporto donne – Latakia

Descrizione Progetto

Programma volto a favorire nuove attività imprenditoriali promosse e gestite da donne volte a favorire il sostentamento di famiglie povere.

Beneficiari raggiunti

50 donne aiutate nella formazione life skills e inserimento lavorativo, attraverso un programma di supporto di attività e business start-ups.

40 donne hanno frequentato il corso di taglio e cucito di 6 mesi e aiutate poi per inserimento lavorativo.

§ Educazione e assistenza – centro ricreativo e di supporto psicologico per bambini

Descrizione Progetto

Il progetto, si è rivolto finora a ragazzi di famiglie di sfollati interni, ha proposto attività di recupero e riabilitazione attraverso laboratori di arte, sport e cucina, coinvolgendo anche insegnanti e personale specializzato.

200 ragazzi/giovani aiutati durante l’anno + 22 insegnanti e staff specializzato coinvolti.

20 bambini orfani assistiti annualmente.

§ Centro di assistenza e sviluppo Pro Terra Sancta – Gemmaize

Descrizione Progetto e attività

Il social/emergency sorge all’interno del complesso del convento di Gemmaize, dove sono state recuperate 5 stanze e salone per gli uffici di Pro Terra Sancta. Lavorano circa 10 persone tra staff fisso e collaboratori. Il progetto generale include diverse attività sociali.

700 famiglie di Beirut, Tripoli, Tiro, Deir-Mimas, Harissa raggiunte dalle distribuzioni e gli aiuti di beni di prima necessità.

200 persone aiutate con medicine e copertura di spese mediche.

70 borse di studio per studenti bisognosi nell’area di Beirut + 50 borse di studio per gli universitari bisognosi nell’area di Beirut e Harissa.

§ Franciscan Care Center - Centro di riabilitazione psicologica per bambini

Descrizione Progetto

Il centro di arte-terapia per riabilitazione psicologica per bambini, denominato Franciscan Care Center, è in funzione anche a Beirut da novembre 2021. 4 stanze e un grosso salone sono stati recuperati

Selezione, formazione e supporto a giovani e non libanesi con idee imprenditoriali e di business, con accompagnamento e formazione da parte di coaches e tutors italiani e libanesi, con una community totale di ca. 25 persone.

35 giovani formati sul tema business-startup e 7 giovani aiutati direttamente con loan e grants per far partire le loro attività commerciali e imprenditoriali-sociali.

Libano – El Mina, Tripoli

§ Centro di assistenza e Dispensario medico

Descrizione Progetto

All’interno del complesso del convento di Tripoli, 3 locali sono stati rinnovati e adibiti a dispensario medico, attivi due giorni alla settimana con 3 dottori disponibili (incluso pediatra) e distribuzione di medicine.

200 persone e bambini ricevuti e aiutate ogni mese, con visite mediche e distribuzioni di medicinali e vaccini.

§ Centro Sportivo San Francesco

Descrizione Progetto

Presso il convento di San Francesco, a Tripoli, è presente un ampio centro sportivo composto da: un campo da calcio, un campo da basket, un’area parco-giochi. Il centro sportivo è di grande importanza nel quartiere e viene attualmente frequentato da bambini e ragazzi cristiani e musulmani e provenienti da famiglie libanesi, siriane e palestinesi. Si continua a sostenere il miglioramento e ampliamento del centro, continuano dei lavori per sistemare gli spazi di gioco, coprire i campi e rinnovare lo spogliatoio e organizzare tornei e corsi di sport.

300 bambini e giovani provenienti da famiglie povere libanesi e rifugiati palestinesi e siriane hanno usufruito, quando possibile, dei campi e degli allenamenti organizzati proposti dal centro.

Durante il 2023 è stato inoltre possibile installare impianto di pannelli solari per tutta la struttura e sono inoltre stati completati i lavori di costruzioni di nuovi edifici e spazi per la palestra, per il giudo, danza e ping-pong.

§ Educazione e formazione

Descrizione Progetto

In collaborazione con scuole locali (Tripoli, Adonis, Carmelitani, Gbaleh, Menjez) sono state istituite borse di studio durante l’anno a supporto degli studenti e famiglie più bisognose.

In collaborazione con maestra di arte, è stato attivato un ciclo di corsi di arte e disegno.

Libano – Tiro

§ Progetto dopo-scuola bambini

Descrizione Progetto

All’interno del complesso del convento di Tiro, completati i primi lavori di ricupero di due stanze, per le attività di distribuzioni di aiuti alimentari, medicine, accoglienza ma anche di educazione per bambini. Sono stati coperti anche i lavori per la creazione di una guest-house.

§ Progetto conservazione valorizzazione Musky - Cairo

Descrizione Progetto

Sostegno al Centro Francescano di Studi Orientali Cristiani per rinnovare la struttura e studiare e catalogare le collezioni, e supporto all’organizzazione di eventi per coinvolgere la comunità locale, in particolare studenti e studentesse universitari del Cairo. Lo scopo principale del Centro è lo sviluppo delle scienze orientali riguardanti le comunità cristiane del Medio Oriente e la documentazione sulla vita e la storia dei Francescani in Terra Santa.

Circa 200 studenti visitatori del centro e supportati per i loro studi e ricerche, vengono loro offerti anche corsi di base di latino, greco e italiano.

§ Progetto aiuto ai poveri ed educazione giovani

Descrizione Progetto

Distribuzione di cibo e medicinali e sostegno dei poveri del quartiere del Musky Cairo, dove sorge il convento Francescano della Custodia di Terra Santa e in partnership con le suore francescane del CIM presso le loro opere a Porto Said, Alessandria, EL Dhahereya, Assiut, Minya, Towirat, Qena, Deir Dronka, Kafr el Dawar, Haram sono state attivati aiuti di carattere educativo come pagamento rette di bambini ospitati in orfanotrofi, spese mediche per famiglie, spese per beni essenziali. Aiuto anche alle giovani coppie.

§ Progetto Novizi: Sostegno alla formazione dei Novizi della Custodia presso la Verna.

Descrizione Progetto

Supporto ai novizi della custodia di terra santa, attraverso pagamento di vitto e alloggio, assicurazione sanitaria e spese mediche, permessi di soggiorno per cittadini extra UE.

8 novizi frati aiutati a completare il loro percorso di noviziato.

IX. Stipendi ordinari della Custodia di Terra Santa

Stipendi mensili di circa 1.044 impiegati in Israele (69%) e Palestina (31%) divisi tra 14 scuole (63% del numero totale degli impiegati), 4 Case Nove per pellegrini (10% del numero degli impiegati), 80 santuari, 25 parrocchie e tante attività varie.

Durante la pandemia del COVID i dipendenti con residenza in Israele hanno potuto beneficiare di una forma di cassa integrazione (halat) fino all’ottobre 2021 che lo Stato pagava loro e corrispondeva al 70% dello stipendio. I lavoratori dello Stato di Palestina invece erano totalmente privi di welfare. Per questo la Custodia ha scelto di continuare a pagare la metà dello stipendio degli impiegati dei territori palestinesi rimasti a casa e ovviamente il 100% di quelli che potevano venire al lavoro, ha cercato anche di far lavorare nei conventi e nelle opere di restauro soprattutto cristiani palestinesi provenienti dalla West Bank per garantire un sostentamento alle loro famiglie. Questa scelta ha gravato ovviamente sull’economia della Custodia in un tempo in cui non c’erano state introiti dai santuari per l’assoluta mancanza di pellegrini da fine febbraio 2020 fino all’aprile del 2022.

Finita l’emergenza pandemia abbiamo avuto poco più di un anno di ritorno progressivo alla normalità (aprile 2022-7 ottobre 2023). Con il conflitto siamo piombati di nuovo in una situazione di sofferenza e di incertezza anche economica. Durante il recente conflitto, i lavoratori provenienti dalla West Bank che ogni giorno si recano a lavoro a Gerusalemme, non sono potuti entrare dai checkpoint perché chiusi dall’Autorità Israeliana per quasi 2 mesi. La Custodia ha provveduto ugualmente al pagamento degli stipendi per sostenere le famiglie in un momento di generale difficoltà.

Summary Report 2022/2023

For many centuries the Custody of the Holy Land has been committed to the conservation and revitilisation of the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and in the entire Middle East. Among the various objectives of the Franciscan mission we mention the support and development of the Christian minority that dwells in this region, the conservation and valorisation of the archaeological zones and of the sanctuaries, interventions in cases of emergency, the liturgy in the Holy Places, the apostolic works and the assistance to pilgrims. For the biennium 2022/2023 the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land has continued to manifest itself in the projection, programming and execution of the following projects and works:

XVIII. Ordinary wages of the Custody of the Holy Land

The works listed here have already been realised thanks to various kinds of economic contributions, and in the first place thanks to the Good Friday Collection, and then thanks to fundraising activities of the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) and the Association Pro Terra Sancta (PTS), but also thanks to other private and institutional donors, as well as from other entries ensuing from other activities.

We thank God that here, in Jerusalem, as well as in the rest of the world, Covid-19 has reduced to a great extent its destructive potential, and its effects do not constitute an impediment for the circulation of persons any longer. This fact brought about a progressive revival in the number of pilgrims, with a certain economical respite for the Christian families and also for the Custody. However, the recent worsening of the war between Palestine and Israel, from 7 October 2023 (in the Gaza Strip in a particular way, but with consequences in the entire West Bank and in Jerusalem, and regarding pilgrims, the entire country of Israel), has brought a sudden cancellation of all pilgrimages that were taking place or that had been planned, with the closure of all check-points with the impossibility of workers from the West Bank to enter Jerusalem, and with the difficulty for everybody to move with security in the entire territory. In spite of all this, we still continue the mission that has been entrusted to us, knowing that Divine Providence, that has willed our presence in this Land, will never cease to take care of us.

I. WORKS GEARED TOWARDS PILGRIMS

Acre: building of the ex-kindergarten

§ The ongoing project of the works of restructuring of the “Kindergarten” building, in view of rendering once more habitable the apartment in which the sisters who took care of the school used to live.

Acre: friary of Saint Francis

§ Ongoing study for works of restoration of the windows and facades in order to solve problems of humidity infiltration.

Ain Karem: Sanctuary of Saint John the Baptist

§ The completing phase of the works on the security of the electrical system of the building that comprises the friary, church and seminary.

§ Programming of the works of restructuring of the friary kitchen.

§ Still ongoing phase of projecting the works of excavation/restoration of the church.

Ain Karem: Casanova

§ Phase of completion of the work on the security of the electrical system of the Casanova for the welcoming of pilgrims.

Ain Karem: Sanctuary of Saint John in the Desert

§ Near completion of the urgent interventions for the conservation of the sanctuary, based on a masterplan that includes the regimentation of rainwater in the area surrounding the friary.

Ain Karem: Sanctuary of the Visitation

§ Completion of the works of installation of a new bell.

§ Ongoing interventions of maintenance for the conservation of the sanctuary.

Beit Sahour: Sanctuary of the Shepherds’ Field

§ Definition of a masterplan of interventions for the conservation and the development of the site, which includes new internal and external chapels for celebrations, the restoration of the grotto of the shepherds, new bathrooms and other infrastructure.

§ Completion of the works on a new “Pilgrims Centre”, which will include bathrooms, a souvenir shop, space for restaurant and a multifunctional hall for conferences.

§ Ongoing completion works for the building of three of the five internal chapels for the celebration of pilgrims (the Croatian, Spanish and Arab chapels). Ongoing work on the first one of the external chapels (chapel of Guadalupe).

§ In course of elaboration of the project of the layout of the archaeological zone with a new excavation campaign in collaboration with the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology (PIAC) and the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF).

Bethany: Sanctuary of the House of Martha, Mary and Lazarus

§ Final phase of the restoration and valorisation of the Byzantine and Mediaeval remains of the friary of Bethany through the rehabilitation of degraded areas.

Bethlehem: Friary of Saint Catherine

§ Planning of the substitution of the lift of the friary to make it in line with security norms.

§ Planning of the second phase of works for the solution of problems of humidity in the sisters’ convent, by substituting the pipes that gather and direct rain water towards the ancient cisterns present underneath the friary.

Bethlehem: Boys Home

§ Renewal of 5 bathrooms in service for the entire structure.

§ Internal redecoration of the corridors and rooms of the boys.

Bethlehem: Catholic Action

§ Launching of an important work of planning for the rehabilitation and valorisation of the Catholic Action Centre of Bethlehem, comprising an area of 9.000 m2, open for the local community, and endowed with external and roofed spaces for games for children, a recreation hall for the elderly, a reception hall, a cinema, a sports centre with gym and a roofed basket-ball court, an open-air swimming pool, etc.

§ Completion of the maintenance works of the recreation hall for the elderly.

§ Completion of the interventions of security in the external games area for kids (Pro Terra Sancta).

§ Renewal of the lighting system of the basket-ball pitch with installation of energy saving lights.

§ Ongoing maintenance of the sanitary water facility with the rehabilitation of the ancient cisterns.

§ Programming of the restructuring of the gym with the renewal of the sports facilities, the restructuring of the internal games area for kids, and the opening of a cafeteria/restaurant.

Bethlehem: Casanova

§ Renewal of the system of hot sanitary water with the adoption of solar panels with high efficiency and brand new boilers.

§ Planning of the substitution of the generator in order to guarantee the functionality of the structure also during the frequent blackouts in the area.

Capernahum: Sanctuary of the Divine Promise

§ Continuation of the works of maintenance in the entire area.

Cana: Friary of the First Miracle

§ First Miracle Complex and Parish Centre. Completion of the works for the construction of the new school. The complex comprises the pastoral centre and a roofed parking lot extending for a total land surface of 5.000m2.

§ Renewal of the automation system for the church bells.

Emmaus Qubeibeh: Sanctuary of Saints Simeon and Cleopas

§ Ongoing planning of extraordinary maintenance for the conservation of the structures of the church, friary and ex-seminary.

§ Ongoing elaboration of the project to build a shaft for the lift in the building.

Jericho: Site of the Baptism of Jesus on the River Jordan

§ Ongoing interventions of conservation of the property following upon the demining of the area.

§ Realisation of the communicating walkway between the sanctuary and the baptism site on the Jordan (layout of the land surface, levelling of the terrain, placing of gravel to drain water and the delimitation of the walkway).

§ Realisation of a master plan of interventions for the valorisation and development of the site.

§ Ongoing initiatives to obtain permits for the building of bathrooms for pilgrims and the layout of the rooms beneath the church in order to transform them into a chapel for celebrations.

Jericho: Friary of the Good Shepherd

§ Realisation of the external works of art of the church which recall the figure of Jesus the Good Shepherd.

Jerusalem: Basilica of Gethsemane

§ Completion of the structural works for the building of a tunnel and of the lifts in order to link the area of the basilica with the Kidron Valley by means of a walkway for groups of pilgrims.

§ Completion of structural works for the centre for services to pilgrims in the Kidron Valley.

§ About to commence the works for the new system of lighting of the basilica from outside, promoted by the Municipality of Jerusalem.

§ Installation of light roofing for the 3 external chapels of the “Garden of the Apostles”.

§ Ongoing works of restoration of the pavement of the Basilica, in agreement with Greeks and Armenians and in collaboration with the Università La Sapienza (Rome) and the Centro di Restauri of Venaria (TO).

§ Ongoing elaboration of a master plan of interventions for the improvement of the welcoming of pilgrims and visitors in the sanctuary.

Jerusalem: Terra Santa Museum

§ Ongoing realisation of a modern centre for the museum in order to exhibit the value of the Franciscan artistic, archaeological and cultural patrimony. The area of around 2500 m² will comprise:

- Archaeological Museum: The places of the Bible in Palestine (Flagellation Monastery)

- Historical Museum: The Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land (Saint Saviour Monastery)

§ Completion of the interventions of structural consolidation and final touches for the installations in the areas which will complete the museum at the sanctuary of the Flagellation. The installations are in the phase of being concluded.

§ Ongoing works of structural consolidation of the museum area in the Friary of Saint Saviour.

§ Phase of completion of the projection of installations, finishing touches and setups of the area of the museum in the friary of Saint Saviour.

§ Various interventions of internal and external maintenance for the conservation of the building have been realised.

Jerusalem: Dar al Consul/Moussa Afendi

§ Completion of the restructuring of the complex of Dar al Consul in the Old City, by the rehabilitation of the disused basement with a total surface area of circa 1200m², with the valorisation of archaeological finds and the predisposition of the spaces for pilgrims and for cultural activities on the local level.

§ Launching of a project of collaboration between the institute of music Magnificat and the Foundation Andrea Bocelli (ABF) for the institution of a new choir in Jerusalem. The rooms of Dar al Consul are used for the weekly music rehearsals of the choir, whereas in the rooms of Moussa Afendi, in front of Dar al Consul, there is the seat for the foundation for activities of coordination, musical laboratory, etc.

§ Dar al Consul is also open for visits of pilgrims and also hosts cultural events and temporary exhibitions.

Jerusalem: Sanctuary of Betfage

NB: In the realisation of these works, although it entails a factor of complication regarding the requests for permits, the Custody gives priority to workers coming from the West Bank, in order to offer work opportunities for Christians hailing from a territory that does not benefit from a welfare system or from social security. During these last years, these workers would have remained totally deprived of economic resources, as a result of the conflict situation and the various lockdowns.

Other complications have now been added during the recent conflict. These have been the result of the closure of the checkpoints for nearly two months. Wherever possible, the workers have been employed in the Sanctuaries and in the friaries in the West Bank.

Apartments for needy persons and for young couples

The Custody of the Holy Land is proprietor of numerous houses in which the tenants pay symbolic rents. In general, these houses are found in overcrowded areas, where different family nuclei often live in small apartments. Each year the Custody intervenes to maintain and improve the conditions of these dwellings, while at the same time it tries to create other dwellings to support the local community.

During the biennium 2022-2023 the Custody has worked on the following dwelling units:

- complete restructuring of 8 houses;

- partial restructuring of 3 houses;

- extraordinary maintenance of the facades (front walls, roofs, etc.) of 2 hosh.

- ordinary maintenance or emergency interventions in numerous houses.

Cultural activities

§ Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF) – Jerusalem

- Every year the Custody of the Holy Land supports economically the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem.

- Formation of 62 students in the biblical sciences at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. The students hail from various parts of the world and from poor religious provinces and dioceses. To them the Custody guarantees board and lodging plus a scholarship. They are destined to teach Holy Scripture in various countries of the world.

§ Christian Media Center (CMC) – Jerusalem/nazareth

The services offered comprise:

- A Website, which is completely renewed, simplified for use and now also mobile friendly.

- Terra Sancta News, a weekly news bulletin which features faith, history and current events in the Holy Land; it is transmitted by around 35 transmitting stations in the world in 10 languages (from this year also in Chinese).

- Documentaries on social and religious themes, in various languages.

- Live transmissions of liturgical celebrations and events.

§ Music Institute Magnificat – Jerusalem

- The Magnificat Institute is affiliated to the Conservatorio di Vicenza. It promotes activity of research and cultural manifestations on the local and international level.

- The Institute welcomes more than 220 students who are Christians, Muslims and Jews. They are followed by 30 professors who are also Jews, Christians and Muslims.

§ Welcoming of young seminarians – Jerusalem

- Young seminarians are welcomed in the Franciscan International Seminary of Saint Saviour in Jerusalem.

- They are also welcomed in the Seminary of Ain Karem.

§ Formation of young seminarians – Jerusalem

- Theological formation at the Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum (STJ) of 31 young seminarians coming from various Provinces of the Order of Friars Minor.

- Formation of around 60 young men from the aspirancy to specialised studies.

§ Support and Works of Christian Charity

7) Franciscan Sisters School (Jericho): the school falls under the care of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is one of the most frequented schools of the city of Jericho. Today it welcomes more than 500 male and female children (from 4 to 14 years of age), who attend the kindergarten, the elementary school and the secondary school. The children of the kindergarten and elementary school attend mixed classes, while the secondary school is open only for female pupils.

Description of the Project

ProTS has supported the school, which falls under the care of three Sisters and a Staff of around 42 persons, with the restructuring of the external games area of the school.

More than 500 children and adolescents from 4 to 14 years.

8) Convent of Saint Vincent De Paul (Mamilla, Jerusaslem): within the Monastery of St. Vincent de Paul, 4 Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul take care of a kindergarten and of a centre for disabled persons. The kindergarten welcomes more than 200 children aged from three to four years. The families of the children pay a school fee which is much lower than the one they would have to pay in other kindergartens in Jerusalem. They also create a lively and multicultural environment, since they represent eight different nationalities. This activity is important for the families of the surroundings since the kindergarten is open 7 days a week, respecting the Christian, Muslim and Jewish festivities. The ground floor of the Convent is the seat of the Nursing Home Rehabilitation, a residence which welcomes around 30 persons who have physical disability and/or mental problems, plus elderly persons who cannot receive care and assistance in their families.

Description of the Project

In 2019 ProTS has restructured some areas which were in a dilapidated state within the Convent, and it has opened the Dar Mamilla Guesthouse, whose objective is not only that of welcoming visitors from all over the world, but also to help the work of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. A part of the entries of Dar Mamilla Guesthouse has always been destined to support their activity and the works of restructuring of the areas of the Convent.

Around 200 male and female children from three months to four years of age.

Around 30 persons with physical disabilities and/or mental problems.

4 sisters and 74 members of the staff of the Convent of Saint Vincent de Paul.

9) Jerusalem African Community Center (JACC) (Jaffa Street, Jerusalem): is a centre of support and community for around 3000 immigrants who request asylum and who hail from Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia, among whom are many families with children, who stay in Jerusalem. The centre provides support to refugees through legal and psychological support, the organisation of courses of formation and the distribution of goods of prime necessity for those families most in need. The conditions in which the families who request asylum in Israel live are of an extreme socio-economic vulnerability, since these persons are blocked in a limbo in which their request for asylum is neither accepted nor rejected, and therefore they do not enjoy any rights or protection.

Description of the Project

ProTS supports the community of JACC for many years. It contributes to cover the salaries of the staff in the centre and it provides support in the writing and presentation of projects. In 2023 a project has been presented through the ordinary call of the Waldensian Evangelical Church, which has been approved and is in the phase of implementation for the organisation of courses of professional formation, among which there will be courses for tailoring, courses in English and Hebrew languages, acquisition of competencies (CV writing, computer, etc.) and sessions of legal assistance and psychosocial support.

10) Saint Louis French Hospital (New Gate, East Jerusalem): is a hospital that belongs to the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition. The hospital specialises in providing palliative care for terminal patients, with a total capacity of 57 beds, divided between the gereatric ward; the complicated gereatric ward; and the oncology ward. The hospital also offers treatment for persons who are HIV positive.

Description of the Project

In collaboration with the staff and the Director Alex Hadweh the project of restructuring of the hairdresser’s hall has been concluded, and this service is now available to the patients of the hospital.

More than 55 patients.

11) Notre-Dame Des Douleurs Home (Abu Dis, East Jerusalem): the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sorrowful Madonna takes care of the House Notre Dame des Douleurs, which welcomes persons coming from the margins of society. It takes care of them, and provides services, meals and recreational activities (physical exercises, walks in the garden, handicraft laboratories and social games). The majority of the guests are Palestinians. However, there are also present guests of Syrian, Lebanese and Ethiopian nationalities. Today (data of 2022), in Notre Dame Home, live 4 Sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sorrowful Madonna, who welcome around 40 guests. Besides, there is a doctor of Saint Joseph Hospital who regularly visits the Notre Dame Home once a week.

Description of the Project

In collaboration with the staff and the Director a Course for Social Health Care Assistance has been implemented, and is geared towards the workers of the structure for socio-sanitary professional formation.

12) Latin Parish of Jerusalem (Old City, East Jerusalem) and Latin Parish of Bethlehem

Description of the Project

ProTS supports poor families in situations of socio-economic difficulty through the support for the payment of rents, expenses for medical operations and medicines, and other various needs in support of family members who go through a social emergency since they are burdened with the care of elderly and disabled persons who are not self-sufficient.

Around 50 families.

§ Support PSS to children and adolescents in Jerusalem

Description of the Project

In collaboration with the Spafford Children’s Center it was noted that there is a necessity to activate an integrated programme of protection of treatment of trauma; it entails a psycho-social support and help in handling of anger and stress for children, young people and parents. The programme lasts for 12 months. In Jerusalem, as a result of the dangers inherent in many quarters of East Jerusalem and because of fear experienced by families, children and adolescents often find themselves closed in for weeks at home and isolated. To this one adds the growing episodes of violence and abuses. The activities in this phase of implementation include sessions of treatment of trauma and handling of anger and stress. They are carried out within the centre itself, and within some schools of East Jerusalem.

Around 20 families of Jerusalem and surroundings, for a total of circa 100 persons.

§ Project Terra Sancta Museum

Description of the Project

Terra Sancta Museum (TSM): A Community Living Museum for Palestinian Youth: the project affronts the vulnerability of children and adolescents in the Old City of East Jerusalem, which is totally separated from its Palestinian surroundings. The objective of the project is the creation of a space where one guarantees total protection for the cultural and identity growth of Palestinian young people in East Jerusalem, who find themselves in a situation of cultural isolation. In the space of the archaeological section of the Terra Sancta Museum, and through its collections, the project develops educational activities geared towards schools, towards families and towards local young people. The project is realised in partnership with the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum and the Cultural Office for the Patrimony of the CTS.

Sebastia Samaria

§ Support to young people of Sabastia - Mosaic Centre

Description of the Project

In the absence of tourists who can be welcomed as guests in the guest-house, and with the road-blocks that prohibit people to go out of the village to look for work, the community of Sebastia, and especially the youngest age-groups of the population, are living in a situation of extreme uncertainty and vulnerability because of the war going on in Gaza and the growing violence of Israeli settlers who live in the settlements around the village. In this context, ProTS wants to offer to young people the possibility to carry out recreational and educational activities, in order to continue to hope in a future in which dialogue and coexistence will still be possible. The action foresees the organisation of a course of football training to help young people prepare themselves for sports competitions. The project is realised in partnership with the Mosaic Centre.

Bethany

§ Bethany, House of Friendship

Description of the Project

The project foresees the formation and the conservation of the cultural patrimony, in service to the academic institutions and to the Palestinian community: this project is financed by the Cooperazione Italiana (AICS) in partnership with the Mosaic Centre, the Al Quds University, the Università degli Studi di Palermo, the Università di Torino and the Al Hana Women Association. The project has the objective of contributing to the protection and safeguarding of the cultural patrimony of Bethany in order to favour an inclusive social and economic development which can promote culture, sustainable tourism and local products.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

Around 250 male and female children of Bethany have been involved in educational activities and experimental archaeology.

Around 10 workers from Bethany are involved in activities of restoration.

Betlemme

§ Centre for Listening and Orientation for job creation Pro Terra Sancta

Description of the Project

In Bethlehem there is a centre for listening and orientation for job creation in order to provide medical assistance (access to basic medical treatment, operations and hospitalisation, and specific medical treatments) as well as social assistance to the most vulnerable population of the area, in collaboration with other organisations that form part of the same network. The centre for listening employs a senior and a junior social assistant, and the requests for assistance are evaluated monthly by a predisposed committee of which one member has to be external to the organisation.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

444 persons have gone to the centre for listening and have been welcomed and their cases evaluated by the personnel of ProTS or else referred to organisations which are part of the network.

250 persons have benefited from support for medical and social assistance.

25 young people have participated in vocational training and 27 young people have been supported through the programme of orientation for work, in collaboration with 15 institutions and small and medium firms.

15 young people have benefited from activities of psychological and group support.

70 poor families have been supported through the granting of a contribution for the Christmas festivities.

§ Emergency Houses and Water

Description of the Project

The centre for listening also welcomes requests for interventions of rehabilitation of damaged buildings, or unhealthy buildings, and of the installation of water tanks and solar panels.

65 families have benefited from interventions of restructuring and security of their dwellings.

36 families have benefited from the installation of water tanks and solar panels.

72 families have been visited by our staff after having come for the first time to the centre of listening.

§ Support for Education

Description of the Project

Sponsorships in order to guarantee the instruction of some children who frequent the Terra Sancta Schools (Saint Joseph and Terra Sancta College), Rosary Sisters School and SIRA School. Besides some families have been supported in order to be able to pay the school or university fees.

250 children and adolescents aged between 3 and 17 have been supported in order to continue their studies.

§ Socio-Entrepreneurial activities

Description of the Project

Pro Terra Sancta in Bethlehem directs two guesthouses (Dar al Majus and Dar Essideh), both in the historical centre. Besides these, a fair trade bazaar is active. It is based upon a net of 30 providers who are principally organisations which guarantee work to vulnerable women or disabled persons.

§ DAMJ creative lab

Description of the Project

In the old buildings ProTS has activated a creative laboratory that supports some small entrepreneurial realities in the development of products and the identity of brand and logo. Besides this, it supports the institutions and the works that want to develop productions in order favour their sustainability.

9 institutions have been supported in the development of their business and new products (eg. Effetà).

§ Cultural Activities – Dar Al Majus Community Centre

Description of the Project

At Dar Al Majus, and in collaboration with other local realities, ProTS organises cultural activities geared towards the community of Bethlehem and made up of various types: literary presentations, writing laboratories, concerts, kitchen workshops, performance for theatre, etc.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

Around 600 members of the local community who have taken part in activities and cultural events.

Around 350 children who have taken part in cultural activities and workshops.

15 organisers and artists who are partners of the events and activities which are organised (eg. Bethlehem Academy of Music, Bab Eddir Gallery, OpenMic, Alliance Française, Diyar Theatre Group, Willy Brandt Center, etc.).

§ Support to other works of charity

8) Support Hogar Nino Dios – remaking of the swimming pool and beginning of water physiotherapy.

Description of the Project

In collaboration with the religious of the Incarnate Word a project of rehabilitation of the swimming pool has been concluded, with the aim of organising physiotherapeutic activities in water. The showers have been restructured, a boiler for water has been added and equipment for physiotherapy has been bought. In the context of the project of orientation to the work the figure of a therapist has also been inserted, in order to support the staff and the sisters for a period of six months, as from October 2023. Besides this, ProTS has also offered the services of a volunteer for 11 months.

9) Support Società Caritatevole Antoniana and Suore dell’Hortus Conclusus

Description of the Project

The collaboration consists in realising the works of restructuring and improvement of the institutes, in the support of the staff through training, through the provision of medicine and equipment, in the support of current expenses. In this situation of emergency there are works to reactivate the Day Centre which, before the Covid-19 pandemic, used to permit to 60 elderly persons to receive a warm meal and to take part in group activities. The sisters of Hortus Conclusus take care of the kindergarten in Artas, always in the Governatorate of Bethlehem, and to them have been donated equipment and didactic material.

33 elderly persons who live alone, of whom 28 are women.

10) Support Boys Home – language courses and psychological support

Description of the Project

ProTS has activated at Dar al Majus for the boys living in the Boys Home a language course in Italian and Spanish, as well as activities of psycho-social support in order to face the continual traumas which they undergo.

20 boys of 8 to 17 years of age, who are orphans or who come from families which are socially at a disadvantage or with problems of dependence and/or violence.

11) Institute for the deaf Effetà

Description of the Project

ProTS is supporting the school with the participation and payment of some school fees for some children coming from the poorest villages, and with the support of acquiring new equipment for autistic cases. The majority of the students, in fact, do not succeed in covering the costs of the annual school fees, even though these are very low. The figure of a teacher has also been inserted in the sphere of the project of orientation to work.

200 students with hearing impairment from 2 to 18 years have access to a medical clinic equipped for their needs.

12) Franciscan Sisters Aida Camp – rebuilding of the drainage system and support to the sisters

Description of the Project

ProTS is supporting the Sisters who at Aida Camp have a guesthouse and a kindergarten. They support them in the payment of some urgent expenses and in the rebuilding of the drainage system. Besides this, through the programme of orientation to work, they guarantee help care to one of the sisters who is not self-sufficient.

13) Catholic Action – rehabilitation of the playground and centre for elderly persons

Description of the Project

ProTS has contributed to the rehabilitation of the playground in the building of the Catholic Action and in the meeting Centre for the elderly. Besides this, they support the Catholic Action through the programme of orientation to work.

14) Teaching of Italian and Latin to seminarians and aspirant friars

Description of the Project

ProTS has offered some volunteers for teaching Italian and Latin to some seminarians of the Seminary of Beit Jala and to some aspirant friars of the Custody.

§ Support to the Latin Parish

Description of the Project

ProTS supports the Latin parish of Gaza City, offering support for parochial activities and the necessities of the community. With the breaking out of the way the aid has been intensified in order to support the basic and primary needs of the population exhausted by the bombardments and overcrowded within the compound of the buildings of the parish.

135 persons who make part of the community of the Latin Parish of Gaza.

600 persons who became homeless within the Parish at the beginning of the war.

§ Butterfly Children of Gaza

Description of the Project

ProTS, in collaboration with Caritas and with the Latin Parish, leads the project of medical assistance to “Butterfly Children”, guaranteeing the basic treatments and home assistance to around 30 children who live in the Gaza Strip and who suffer from Epidermolosis Bullosa, a genetic and rare intrusive illness, which provokes blisters and lesions on the skin and on internal mucous membranes. In the entire Gaza Strip 65 patients have received a diagnosis of Epidermolisis Bullosa (37 males and 28 females), in the Governatorate of Gaza City 19, in the North 9, in the Centre 15, at Khan Younis and Rafah 22 (Source: Catholic Church).

Description of the Project

In collaboration with the Franciscans present in Rhodes, ProTS helps to distribute goods of prime necessity (food and medicines) to the immigrants and refugees coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

§ Education project Amman: scholarships for young people and support to schools.

Description of the Project

In collaboration with the Latin Apostolic Vicariate, ProTS has donated scholarships to support young students in a network of schools in Jordan.

It has also supported the public school of Jabal Weidbeh called ʻBalat Al-Sheehadah’ of Amman.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

100 students have been helped with scholarships and scholastic material, with a special aid given to 10 orphans.

50 poor families supported with social help.

V. SYria

Works/Projects supported by Pro Terra Sancta

Syria - Aleppo

§ Centre of assistance – Azizieh

Description of the Project and activities

Distribution of food, medical assistance, vouchers to acquire fuel for electricity and heating, clothes, soap powder and products for hygiene, nappies and milk powder for babies. Continuation of the activity of the social kitchen, with circa 20 among staff, cooks and volunteers, who take collaborate to prepare and offer hot meals, trying to meet the needs of the people created by the high rise in the cost of food and by the near total absence of electricity that can permit people to cook in their homes. The aid has been increased after the earthquake.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

3.000 families receive food backs and non-food items, electricity and water (including 500 families with new-born babies and infants + 100 Muslim disabled children).

1.200 persons per day receive a hot meal, prepared and distributed at the Franciscan social kitchen of the centre.

4.500 persons have been helped with medicines and medical assistance.

250 students have been economically helped with scholarships, and 120 students have been directly supported with extra-curricular activities.

70 houses have been repaired after the earthquake (zone Midan, Azizieh, East, TSC).

§ Light and heating for families, Solar Panels – Azizieh

Description of the Project

Installation of solar panels for electricity and heating.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

120 families receive the installation of solar panels.

Cost of one water solar panel pump + Cost of 1 solar panel for energy = 2.500 EUR.

§ Franciscan Care Center – Aleppo TSC

Description of the Project

The centre for psychological rehabilitation for children, called Franciscan Care Center, is functioning in some rooms of Terra Sancta College and on the outside, in the large spaces that have been arranged during 2023: laying out of two football fields and one basket-ball court, covering of two fields, large space for activities for young children and the maintenance of the swimming pool. The activities include the arts-therapy, music-therapy, sports, face to face assistance, teaching of English and French.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

700 children and adolescents who enrolled and were assisted at the centre of rehabilitation of Terra Sancta College; 270 children enrolled in the Terra Sancta Academy.

24 local specialised persons are involved in the centre (educators, teachers, psychologists, trainers, artists).

§ Franciscan Care Center – Centres of east Aleppo

Description of the Project

Three centres for helping and welcoming have been opened in the area of East Aleppo, in collaboration with the Mufti and the Mukthar of the area, in order to assist: children and orphans in the poor areas and in areas of great social degradation; children who are between 9 and 10 years of age and who are compelled to leave school in order to work; support and help to women and mothers of East Aleppo.

4.000 children/orphans of East Aleppo are helped and followed in 3 centres.

600 women of East Aleppo are supported and formed, and 150 adults are helped with formation and other aids for work.

90 specialised persons involved in 3 seats of the centre (educators, teachers, psychologists, trainers, artists).

§ Help to the sick of Aleppo

Description of the Project

Reparation of buildings and machines for radiology that have been badly damaged after the earthquake of February 2023.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

Circa 400 patients have made use of the repaired machinery in a period of 5 months.

Syria – Hama

§ Franciscan Care Center

Description of the Project

The centre for psychological rehabilitation for children, called Franciscan Care Center, has continued its activities even during 2023 in Hama, in the building of the church of the Immaculate Virgin of the Catholic Syrians in Hama.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

200 children enrolled and assisted at the centre for rehabilitation in Hama, the majority of whom are Muslims.

15 local specialised persons are involved (educators, teachers, psychologists, trainers, artists).

Syria – Damascus

§ Centre for assistance Damascus

Description of the Project

The Pro Terra Sancta has activated a social emergency centre, which is occupied with the distribution of vouchers for acquiring food, medicines and support for medical prescriptions, for fuel for electricity and heating, for clothes, soap powder and products for hygiene, nappies and milk powder for infants. The centre has come to an agreement with ten food stores and pharmacies for the acquisition of goods through vouchers and the successive monthly payment. The beneficiaries are picked up by following these criteria: their financial situation and the number of component members of the family; the number of children present in the family and the number of elderly persons; widows having kids under their care; wives whose husbands are on military service during war.

650 families are supported with food and non-food items each month, and 800 persons are helped with medical/sanitary assistance and medicines; 200 families with new-born babies have been helped for the expenses of milk/nappies.

250 students have been supported with scholarships and scholastic material.

§ Project WIP and formation, development and work Damascus

Description of the Project

At the Pro Terra Sancta centre there is a window of opportunity for work, which foresees the offering of a course of formation for care-workers, with successive insertion in a job, and a course of formation of business start-up offered to young people who are chosen with successive grants of support for the most original and sustainable ideas.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

40 young people formed in the context of business start-up and 15 helped with a fund to launch their own activity.

20 young caregivers formed and who work in families of elderly and hospice structures in Damascus.

§ Centre of welcome and medical assistance - Tabbaleh

Description of the Project

Support and help in the activities of assistance for sick persons welcomed in the Franciscan centre at Tabbaleh. The building is made up of 24 rooms, and since some years it has been welcoming persons with serious illnesses who have to undergo long periods of medical treatment in the hospitals of Damascus: the covering of part of their medical treatment; the acquisition of medicines and the covering of the expenses for the rooms in the building; the expenses to guarantee one meal a day. The intention is that of increasing the number of sick persons who are helped and assisted.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

100 sick persons have been welcomed every year in the centre.

120 persons have been helped with distribution of medicines and covering costs of operations and hospitalisation.

§ Support to the children of Damascus: Refuge at the Memorial of St. Paul - Tabbaleh

Description of the Project

Support and help to the refuge of Tabbaleh of the Custody of the Holy Land, directed by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CIM). The refuge is found in the rooms of the building of the Franciscan friary. It is made up of 6 classes for children aged between 2.5 and 5 years, for a total of 140 children, 10 teachers and 2 employees for office/cleaning.

§ Franciscan Music Center - Tabbaleh Damascus

Description of the Project

The Franciscan Music Centre is a school of music born and structured in the disused premises of the building of the friary of the Custody of the Holy Land. The centre was born in collaboration with a local pianist and director of the “Centre for harmony and for musical education of Damascus”. To Syrian children and young adolescents are proposed courses of guitar, pianoforte, violin and battery. ProTS supports the current costs, the acquisition of musical instruments and part of the salaries of the teachers.

§ Psychological support for children and young people – Tabbaleh Damascus

Description of the Project

In collaboration with CRS, in some rooms of the refuge and of the friary are offered activities of PSS and art-therapy for young people and adolescents.

100 young people from poor quarters of Damascus.

§ Saint George Kindergarten - Maaloula

Description of the Project

Maaloula is a small village in the Governatorate of Rif Dimashq some 56 km to the north-east of Damascus. The kindergarten of Saint George lies within the building of the Greek-Melkite Catholic church of Saint George and represents the only educational reality geared towards the young which is still functioning in the area. The building is very modest and nowadays the kindergarten consists of 5 classes and their adjacent bathrooms. Also in 2023 the current costs of the structure have been shouldered, as well as the covering economic costs for some families who do not manage to pay the monthly school fee.

30 children enrolled in the kindergarten with their respective families; 3 teachers.

§ Project of the Quarter and Sanctuary of Saint Hananias - Damascus

Description of the Project

ProTS has contributed to the relaunching in the area of Saint Hananias, with the recovery of 7 dwelling houses and of the main square in front of the sanctuary. A study has been launched regarding the restructuring of the area of the Sanctuary.

The population of the Christian Quarter of Damascus and potential future pilgrims.

Syria – Knaye and Yacoubieh

§ Centre for assistance - Knaye and Yacoubieh (province of Idlib)

Description of the Project

In the friary of Knaye has been activated a social/emergency centre, which is occupied with the distribution of food, medicines, vouchers for the acquisition of fuel for electricity and heating, clothes, soap powder and products for hygiene, nappies and milk powder for children. Besides, a project of help and assistance after the earthquake has been activated, and it oversees the covering of the costs of reparation of the churches of Knaye and Yacoubieh, and the repairing of many houses.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

240 families have been supported with water, electricity, heating (Christian and Muslim families).

60 children with their respective families; 65 students and 11 local teachers.

80 houses have been repaired.

Syria – Latakia

§ Centre for assistance – Latakia

Description of the Project

In the Franciscan friary of Latakia has been activated a social/emergency centre, which is occupied with the distribution of food, medicines and medical assistance, vouchers for acquiring fuel for electricity and heating, clothes, soap powder and products for hygiene, nappies and milk powder for infants.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

420 families have been helped with food and non-food items, monthly rent of the house; 45 receive milk and nappies.

130 persons each month are helped with medicines and medical assistance.

150 students and their respective families.

§ Centre of assistance and Medical dispensary – Latakia

Description of the Project

In collaboration with AVSI and the Apostolic Nunciature of Damascus, in the centre premises has been activated a medical dispensary, with the distribution of medicine and a system of referrals to other medical structures and doctors.

500 persons have been helped with free medical visits and with the distribution of medicines every week.

§ Centre of assistance and support for women – Latakia

Description of the Project

A programme geared to favour new entrepreneurial activities promoted and directed by women, and aimed at favouring the sustenance of poor families.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

50 women have been helped in the formation of life skills and insertion in work, through a programme of support of activities and business start-ups.

40 women have frequented the 6 months’ course of tailoring and sewing and afterwards they were helped to insert themselves in a stable work.

§ Education and assistance – recreational and psychological support centre for children

Description of the Project

Up till now this project has been geared towards children coming from internally homeless families, and has proposed activities of recovery and rehabilitation through laboratories of art, sports and kitchen, involving also teachers and specialised personnel.

200 children/young people have been helped during the year + 22 teachers and specialised staff have been involved.

20 orphaned children are assisted annually.

VI. LEBANON

Lebanon – Beirut

§ Centre of assistance and development Pro Terra Sancta – Gemmaize

Description of the Project and activities

The social/emergency centre is found within the building of the friary of Gemmaize, where 5 rooms and a hall have been fitted in order to become offices Pro Terra Sancta. Around 10 persons work there, among fixed staff and collaborators. The general project includes various social activities.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

700 families of Beirut, Tripoli, Tyre, Deir-Mimas, Harissa have been reached by distributions and offers of goods of basic necessity.

200 persons have been helped with medicines and the covering costs of medical expenses.

70 scholarships for needy students in the area of Beirut + 50 scholarships for needy university students in the area of Beirut and Harissa.

§ Franciscan Care Center – Centre for psychological rehabilitation of children

Description of the Project

The centre of art-therapy for the psychological rehabilitation of children, called Franciscan Care Centre, is functioning also in Beirut since November 2021. 4 rooms and a large hall have been fitted for the purpose.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

120 among children, young people and elderly persons participate in the activities proposed.

8 local specialised persons are involved (educators, teachers, psychologists, trainers, artists).

§ Project WIP

Description of the Project and activities

Selection, formation and support of young people and non-Lebanese persons with enterpreneurial and business ideas, with accompaniment and formation by Italian and Lebanese coaches and tutors, with a community made up of circa 25 persons.

Beneficiaries reached

35 young people formed on the theme business start-up and 7 young persons directly helped with a loan and grants to launch their commercial and entrepreneurial-social activities.

Lebanon – El Mina, Tripoli

§ Centre of assistance and Medical dispensary

Description of the Project

Within the building of the friary of Tripoli, 3 rooms have been renovated and fitted as a medical dispensary, which is active for two days a week with 3 doctors who are available (including a paediatrician) and the distribution of medicines.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

200 persons and children are received and helped each month, with medical visits and distribution of medicines and vaccines.

§ Saint Francis Sports Centre

Description of the Project

In the friary of Saint Francis, in Tripoli, there is a spacious sports centre composed of: a football field, a basket-ball court, a playground. The sports centre is of great importance in the city quarter and is presently frequented by Christian and Muslim children and youngsters coming from Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian families. An effort is being made to continue to support the improvement of the centre and to make it bigger, by continuing the works to arrange the spaces for games, to cover the fields and renew the dressing rooms, and to organise sports competitions and courses.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

300 children and young people coming from poor Lebanese families and Palestinian and Syrian refugees have made use, as much as possible, of the fields and of the training sessions organised and proposed by the centre.

During 2023 it has moreover been possible to install solar panels for the entire structure, and also to finish the work of construction of new buildings and spaces for the gym, for judo, for dance and for ping-pong.

§ Education and Formation

Description of the Project

During the year a study was made to support students and the families most in need.

In collaboration with an art teacher, a cycle of courses for art and design has been introduced.

120 scholarships for children and most needy families.

35 children in Tripoli are involved in the project.

Lebanon – Tyre

§ After-school project for children

Description of the Project

Within the building of the friary of Tyre, the first works of rehabilitation of two rooms has been completed. These are aimed at the activity of distribution of food, medicines, welcoming and also the education of children. The expenses of works for the creation of a guest-house have also been paid.

25 children have been helped by after-school activities.

VII. EgYPT

Works/projects supported by Pro Terra Sancta

Egypt – Cairo

§ Project of conservation and enhancement Musky - Cairo

Description of the Project

Support to the Franciscan Centre for Christian Oriental Studies in order to renew the structure and to study and catalogue the collections, and to support the organisation of events to involve the local community, in particular university male and female students of Cairo. The principal aim of the Centre is the development of oriental sciences regarding the Christian communities of the Middle East and the documentation on the life and history of Franciscans in the Holy Land.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

Around 200 students who visited the centre and were supported for their studies and research. To them are offered basic courses in Latin, Greek and Italian.

§ Project to help the poor and for the educaiton of young people

Description of the Project

Distribution of food and medicines in support of the poor of the quarter of Musky, Cairo, where the Franciscan friary of the Custody of the Holy Land is situated, and in partnership with the Franciscan Sisters Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CIM) at their own convents of activity in Port Said, Alexandria, El Dhahereya, Assiut, Minya, Towirat, Qena, Deir Dronka, Kafr el Dawar, Haram. The assistance includes works of an educational character like payment for the school fees of the children who are welcomed in orphanages, for the medical expenses of families, and for paying essential commodities. Assistance is also given to young couples.

VIII. ItaLY

Works/projects supported by Pro Terra Sancta

La Verna

§ Project Novices: Support to the formation of the Novices of the Custody in la Verna.

Description of the Project

Support to the novices of the Custody of the Holy Land, through payment of food and lodging, health insurance and medical expenses, residence permits for citizens who come from outside the EU.

Beneficiaries who have been reached

8 friars novices have been helped to complete their formative iter during the novitiate.

IX. ORDINARY WAGES OF THE CUSTODY OF THE HOLY LAND

Monthly wages of circa 1.044 employees in Israel (69%) and Palestine (31%) divided between 14 schools (63% of the total number of employees), 4 Case Nove for pilgrims (10% of the number of employees), 80 sanctuaries, 25 parishes and many other various activities.

During the COVID pandemic, the employees who have residence in Israel have been able to benefit from a form of redundancy fund (halat) until October 2021, which the State paid for them, and which corresponded to 70% of the salary. The workers from the State of Palestine, instead, were totally deprived of any welfare. For this reason the Custody has chosen to continue to pay half of the wages of the employees of the Palestinian territories who had to remain at home, and obviously 100% of the wages of those who could come to work. The Custody has also tried to have as workers in the friaries and in the works of restoration especially the Palestinian Christians hailing from the West Bank, in order to guarantee a support to their families. This choice has obviously been a burden on the economy of the Custody during a time in which there were no entries from the sanctuaries and because of the total lack of pilgrims from the end of February 2020 till April 2022.

When the pandemic emergency ended we have had one year and some months of progressive return to normality (April 2022 – 7 October 2023). With the present conflict we have once again found ourselves thrown into a situation of suffering and uncertainty, even on the economic level. During the recent conflict, the workers hailing from the West Bank who daily come to work in Jerusalem, cannot enter the checkpoint, since these have been closed by the Israeli Authorities for almost 2 months. The Custody has continued to provide equally for the payment of wages in order to support the families in a moment of general difficulty.
