Questa mattina, nel Palazzo Apostolico Vaticano, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza i pellegrini dell’Arcidiocesi di Ozamiz (Filippine).
Pubblichiamo di seguito il discorso che il Papa ha rivolto ai presenti nel corso dell’Udienza:

Eccellenza,
cari fratelli e sorelle, buongiorno a tutti!
Do il mio benvenuto a tutti voi, in particolare all’Arcivescovo Jumoad, mentre festeggiate il cinquantesimo anniversario dell’attuale Arcidiocesi di Ozamiz con un pellegrinaggio mariano in Europa. Grazie per la vostra visita!
È giusto celebrare il vostro Giubileo d’oro in questo modo, con un pellegrinaggio. Infatti, il pellegrinaggio ai santuari è una chiara espressione di fiducia in Dio. I pellegrini portano nel cuore la loro fede, la loro storia, le gioie, le ansie, le speranze e le preghiere personali. Penso alla storia biblica di Anna, la madre del profeta Samuele. Si recò al santuario di Silo con tristezza, ma allo stesso tempo con umile fiducia, per chiedere a Dio il dono di un figlio. Lì il Signore ascoltò la sua preghiera ed esaudì il suo desiderio (cfr 1 Sam 1,12-17). Nei santuari incontriamo il tenero amore del Padre che ha misericordia di tutti. E questa misericordia ci viene spesso manifestata attraverso la nostra santa Madre, Maria, che ci insegna ad accogliere Dio nella vita e che, proprio perché madre, sa porre le nostre necessità davanti a Gesù, come fece per gli sposi a Cana (cfr Gv 2,3-5). A me piace che il gesto di Maria, quello che la dipinge come è, è quello di indicare Gesù. A Cana, cosa ha detto? “Fate quello che Lui dirà”. Maria mai indica sé stessa, Maria indica il Signore, sempre indica il Signore. È un gesto di madre, e generoso, perché lei mai ha voluto mettersi al centro, sempre il Signore.
Mi rallegra, quindi, che il vostro sia un pellegrinaggio mariano e che possiate fare sosta e pregare in diversi santuari dedicati alla Madonna. È Maria, infatti, a mostrarci che essere discepoli di Gesù implica sempre ascoltare la sua parola, meditarla nel cuore (cfr Lc 2,19) e poi portarla agli altri, come impariamo quando va a visitare l’anziana parente Elisabetta (cfr. Lc 1,39-56). Possiamo dire che la Vergine Maria è stata la prima discepola missionaria. Spero che questo pellegrinaggio aiuti ciascuno di voi a essere come lei: discepoli missionari trasformati dall’incontro con il Signore e rinnovati nello zelo di testimoniare la sua presenza, la sua compassione e il suo amore.
Nello stesso tempo, cari fratelli e sorelle, auguro che gli altri eventi e celebrazioni previsti per il Giubileo ispirino tutti i membri della comunità arcidiocesana ad approfondire la consapevolezza della chiamata battesimale a vivere sempre come fedeli discepoli del Signore. In questo modo, nutrita dalla predicazione della Parola di Dio e dalla celebrazione dei Sacramenti, la Chiesa che è in Ozamiz potrà contribuire alla diffusione del Regno di Dio, Regno di giustizia, di unità e di pace.
A questo proposito, esorto le vostre parrocchie e comunità ad essere esemplari nel praticare le opere di misericordia e nell’essere vicini a tutti, specialmente alle famiglie, ai giovani, ai malati, agli anziani e ai poveri, con la carità di Gesù. Questo richiede anche di essere amministratori responsabili del creato, nella consapevolezza che la cura per l’altro e quella per la nostra casa comune sono intimamente legate (cfr Laudate Deum, 3). Mentre guardate al futuro, vi incoraggio a camminare insieme in solidarietà fraterna, ascoltandovi l’un l’altro e soprattutto ascoltando lo Spirito Santo, che guida la Chiesa nel discernere percorsi nuovi e creativi per l’annuncio del Vangelo.
Carissimi, contate sulla mia vicinanza spirituale mentre iniziate il vostro pellegrinaggio. Possano queste giornate essere occasione di grazia per ciascuno di voi e portare frutto nel desiderio di continuare il vostro cammino di fede. Vi affido all’amorevole intercessione della Vergine Maria, Madre della Chiesa, e assicuro la mia preghiera per voi, per le vostre famiglie e per il popolo di Dio nell’Arcidiocesi di Ozamiz. Vi benedico tutti di cuore e vi chiedo, per favore, di ricordarvi di pregare per me. Grazie.

Your Excellency,
Dear brothers and sisters, good morning to everyone!
I offer a cordial welcome to all of you, and in particular to Archbishop Jumoad, as you mark the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of what is now the Archdiocese of Ozamiz with a Marian pilgrimage to Europe. Thank you for your visit.
It is appropriate to celebrate your Golden Jubilee in this way. It is important to keep in mind, however, that a pilgrimage is not like a vacation. In fact, making a pilgrimage to shrines is an eloquent expression of trust in God. Pilgrims carry in their hearts their faith, history, joys, anxieties, hopes and particular prayers. Here, I am thinking of the biblical story of Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel. She went to the shrine of Shiloh in sadness, yet at the same time with humble confidence, to ask God for the gift of a son. There, the Lord heard her prayer and granted her desire (cf. 1 Sam 1:12-17). At shrines, we meet the tender love of the Father who has mercy on all. And that mercy is so often made known to us through our Blessed Mother, Mary, who teaches us how to welcome God into our lives and who, precisely because she is a mother, knows how to place our needs before Jesus, just as she did for the newly-married couple at Cana (cf. Jn 2:3-5). I like that Mary’s gesture, one that portrays her as she is, is to point to Jesus. At Cana, what did she say? “Do whatever he tells you”. Mary never points to herself; Mary points to the Lord, she always points to the Lord. It is a mother’s gesture, and a generous one, because she never wanted to put herself in the centre, but always the Lord.
I am happy, then, that yours is a Marian pilgrimage and that you will be able to visit and pray at different shrines dedicated to Our Lady. For it is Mary who shows us that being followers of Jesus always involves listening to his word, meditating on it in our hearts (cf. Lk 2:19) and then bringing that word to others, as we learn when Mary went to visit her elderly relative Elizabeth (cf. Lk 1:39-56). Indeed, we could say that Mary was the first missionary disciple. It is my hope that this pilgrimage will help each of you to be like Mary: missionary disciples transformed by your encounter with the Lord and renewed in zeal for bearing witness to his presence, compassion and love.
At the same time, I trust that the other events and celebrations planned to mark the Jubilee will inspire all members of the Archdiocesan community to deepen the awareness of their baptismal call to live always as faithful disciples of the Lord. In this way, nourished by the preaching of the word of God and the celebration of the sacraments, the local Church of Ozamiz will be able to contribute to the advancement of God’s kingdom of justice, unity and peace. In this regard, it is my hope that your parishes and communities will be models in practicing the works of mercy and in being neighbours to all, especially families, young people, the sick, the elderly and the poor, with the charity that Jesus asks of us. This includes, as well, being responsible stewards of creation, in the realization that our care for one another and for our common home are intimately bound together (cf. Laudate Deum, 3). As you look forward to the future, I encourage you to journey together in fraternal solidarity, listening to one another and above all to the Holy Spirit who guides the entire Church in discerning new and creative paths for the proclamation of the Gospel.
Dear friends, please know of my spiritual closeness as you begin your pilgrimage. May these days be an occasion of grace for each of you and bear fruit in the desire to continue your journey of faith. Entrusting you to the loving intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, I assure you of my prayers for you, your families and God’s people in the Archdiocese of Ozamiz. To all of you, I cordially impart my blessing, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. Thank you.
