Santa Messa per la Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù nel Parque Tejo

Questa mattina, lasciata la Nunziatura Apostolica, il Santo Padre Francesco si è trasferito in auto al Parque Tejo per la Santa Messa a conclusione della XXXVII Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù.

Dopo aver effettuato alcuni giri in papamobile tra i giovani, il Papa ha presieduto la Celebrazione Eucaristica nella Festa della Trasfigurazione del Signore.

Dopo le parole di ringraziamento del Patriarca di Lisbona, Em.mo Card. Manuel Clemente, e la proclamazione del Vangelo, Papa Francesco ha pronunciato l’omelia.

Al termine della Messa, dopo l’indirizzo di saluto del Prefetto del Dicastero per i Laici, la Famiglia e la Vita, Em.mo Card. Kevin Joseph Farrell, il Santo Padre ha consegnato le croci della GMG ad alcuni rappresentanti dei giovani dei cinque continenti e ha annunciato la sede e l’anno in cui avrà luogo la prossima GMG.

Prima della recita dell’Angelus, il Papa ha rivolto ai giovani e ai pellegrini presenti alcune parole di saluto. Quindi, dopo la benedizione finale, è rientrato in auto alla Nunziatura Apostolica di Lisbona.

Secondo le autorità locali erano presenti al Parque Tejo per la Santa Messa circa un milione e 500.000 persone.

«Señor, ¡qué bien estamos aquí!» (Mt 17,4). Estas palabras, le dijo el apóstol Pedro a Jesús en el monte de la Transfiguración, y también las queremos hacer nuestras después de estos días intensos. Es hermoso lo que estamos experimentando con Jesús, lo que hemos vivido juntos y es hermoso cómo hemos rezado, y con tanta alegría de corazón. Y entonces nos podemos preguntar: ¿qué nos llevamos con nosotros volviendo a la vida cotidiana?

Quisiera responder a este interrogante con tres verbos, siguiendo el Evangelio que hemos escuchado. ¿Qué nos llevamos? Resplandecer, escuchar y no tener miedo. ¿Qué nos llevamos?, respondo con estas tres palabras: Resplandecer, escuchar y no tener miedo.

Primera, resplandecer. Jesús se transfigura, el Evangelio dice que su rostro resplandecía como el sol» (Mt 17,2). Hacía poco que había anunciado su pasión y su muerte en la cruz, y con esto rompía la imagen de un Mesías poderoso, mundano, y frustra las expectativas de los discípulos. Ahora, para ayudarlos a acoger el proyecto de amor de Dios sobre cada uno de nosotros, Jesús toma a tres de ellos —Pedro, Santiago y Juan—, los conduce a un monte y se transfigura. Y este “baño de luz” los prepara para la noche de la pasión.

Amigos, queridos jóvenes, también hoy nosotros necesitamos algo de luz, un destello de luz que sea esperanza para afrontar tantas oscuridades que nos asaltan en la vida, tantas derrotas cotidianas para afrontarlas con la luz de la resurrección de Jesús, porque Él es la luz que no se apaga, es la luz que brilla aun en la noche. «Nuestro Dios ha iluminado nuestros ojos» (Esd 9,8), dice el sacerdote Esdras. Nuestro Dios ilumina. Ilumina nuestra mirada, ilumina nuestro corazón, ilumina nuestra mente, ilumina nuestras ganas de hacer algo en la vida, siempre con la luz del Señor.

Pero quisiera decirles que no nos volvemos luminosos cuando nos ponemos debajo de los reflectores, no, eso encandila. No nos volvemos luminosos cuando mostramos una imagen perfecta, bien prolijitos, bien terminaditos; no, no, aunque nos sintamos fuertes y exitosos. Fuertes y exitosos, pero no luminosos. Nos volvemos luminosos, brillamos, cuando, acogiendo a Jesús, aprendemos a amar como Él. Amar como Jesús, eso nos hace luminosos, eso nos lleva a hacer obras de amor. No te engañes, amiga, amigo, vas a ser luz el día que hagas obras de amor. Pero cuando en vez de hacer obras de amor hacia afuera, mirás a vos mismo, como un egoísta, ahí la luz se apaga.

El segundo verbo es escuchar. En el monte, una nube luminosa cubrió a los discípulos, y esa nube desde la cual habla el Padre, ¿qué dice? «Escúchenlo» (Mt 17,5). Este es mi Hijo amado, escúchenlo. Está todo aquí, y todo eso que hay que hacer en la vida está en esta palabra: Escúchenlo. Escuchar a Jesús, todo secreto está ahí. Escuchás qué te dice Jesús. “Yo no sé qué me dice”. Agarrá el Evangelio y leé lo que dice Jesús y lo que dice en tu corazón. Porque Él tiene palabras de vida eterna para nosotros; Él revela que Dios es Padre es amor. Él nos enseña el camino del amor, escúchalo a Jesús. Porque, por ahí nosotros con buena voluntad emprendemos caminos que parecen ser del amor, pero en definitiva son egoísmos disfrazados de amor. Tené cuidado con los egoísmos disfrazados de amor. Escúchalo, porque Él te va a decir cuál es el camino del amor. Escúchalo.

Resplandecer, la primera palabra, sean luminosos, escuchar, para no equivocarse el camino, y al final, la tercera palabra, no tener miedo. “No tengan miedo”. Una palabra que en la Biblia se repite tanto, en los Evangelios, “no tengan miedo”. Estas fueron las últimas palabras que en este momento de la transfiguración Jesús dijo a los discípulos: “No tengan miedo”.

A ustedes, jóvenes, que han vivido este gozo, estaba por decir esta gloria —bueno, algo de gloria es—, este encuentro con nosotros; a ustedes que cultivan sueños grandes pero a veces ofuscados por el temor de no verlos realizarse; a ustedes, que a veces piensan que no serán capaces, un poco de pesimismo se nos mete a veces; a ustedes, jóvenes, tentados en este tiempo por el desánimo, por juzgarse quizás fracasados o por intentar esconder el dolor disfrazándolo con una sonrisa; a ustedes, jóvenes, que quieren cambiar el mundo —y está bien que quieran cambiar el mundo— y que quieren luchar por la justicia y la paz; a ustedes, jóvenes, que le ponen ganas y creatividad a la vida, pero que les parece que no es suficiente; a ustedes, jóvenes, que la Iglesia y el mundo necesitan [como] la tierra necesita la lluvia; a ustedes, jóvenes, que son el presente y el futuro; sí, precisamente a ustedes, jóvenes, [Jesús] hoy les dice: “No tengan miedo”.

En un pequeño silencio, cada uno repita para sí mismo, en su corazón, estas palabras: No tengan miedo.

Queridos jóvenes, quisiera mirar a los ojos a cada uno de ustedes y decirles: no tengan miedo. No tengan miedo. Es más, les digo algo muy hermoso, ya no soy yo, es Jesús mismo quien los está mirando en este momento. Nos está mirando. «Senhor, é bom estarmos aqui!» (Mt 17, 4). Estas palavras que o apóstolo Pedro disse a Jesus no monte da Transfiguração, queremos fazê-las também nossas depois destes dias intensos. É bom tudo o que estamos a experimentar com Jesus, aquilo que vivemos juntos, e é bom como rezámos, com tanta alegria do coração. Mas perguntamo-nos: Que levamos connosco ao regressar à vida quotidiana?

Quero responder a esta pergunta com três verbos: resplandecer, ouvir, não temer, seguindo o Evangelho que ouvimos. Que levamos connosco? Respondo com três palavras: resplandecer, ouvir e não temer.

A primeira: resplandecer. Jesus transfigura-Se. Diz o Evangelho: «o seu rosto resplandeceu como o sol» (Mt 17, 2). Recentemente tinha anunciado a sua paixão e morte de cruz, esfrangalhando assim a imagem dum Messias poderoso, mundano, e dececionando as expectativas dos discípulos. Ora, para os ajudar a acolher o projeto de amor de Deus a respeito de cada um de nós, Jesus toma consigo três deles – Pedro, Tiago e João –, condu-los ao alto dum monte e transfigura-Se. E este «banho de luz» prepara-os para a noite da paixão.

Amigos, jovens queridos, também nós hoje precisamos de um pouco de luz, um lampejo de luz que forneça esperança para enfrentar tantas obscuridades que nos assaltam na vida, tantas derrotas quotidianas, para as enfrentar com a luz da ressurreição de Jesus. Porque Ele é a luz sem ocaso, a luz que brilha mesmo durante a noite. Diz o sacerdote Esdras: «O nosso Deus quis fazer brilhar os nossos olhos» (Esd 9, 8). O nosso Deus ilumina. Ilumina o nosso olhar, ilumina o nosso coração, ilumina a nossa mente, ilumina o nosso desejo de fazer algo na vida. Sempre com a luz do Senhor.

Mas quero dizer-vos que não ficamos luminosos, colocando-nos sob os holofotes; antes pelo contrário, isso encandeia-nos, não nos torna luminosos. Não ficamos luminosos, quando exibimos uma imagem perfeita, em ordem, bem acabada, não; nem mesmo se nos sentimos fortes e bem-sucedidos: fortes e bem-sucedidos, mas não luminosos. Tornamo-nos luminosos, resplandecemos quando, tendo acolhido Jesus, aprendemos a amar como Ele. Amar como Jesus: isto torna-nos luminosos, isto leva-nos a fazer obras de amor. Não te deixes enganar, minha amiga, meu amigo! Tornar-te-ás luz no dia em que fizeres obras de amor. Ao contrário quando, em vez de fazer obras de amor aos outros, só pensas em ti mesmo como um egoísta, então a luz apaga-se.

O segundo verbo é ouvir. No monte, uma nuvem luminosa cobre os discípulos. E desta nuvem fala o Pai. E que diz? «Escutai-O»! «Este é o meu Filho predileto, escutai-O» (Mt 17, 5). E é tudo… Tudo aquilo que se deve fazer na vida, está nesta palavra: escutai-O. Escutar Jesus. Todo o segredo está aqui. Escuta o que te diz Jesus. «Mas eu não sei o que Ele me diz!» Pega no Evangelho e lê o que diz Jesus, o que Ele diz ao teu coração. Porque Ele tem palavras de vida eterna para nós, revela que Deus é Pai, Deus é amor. Ele aponta-nos o caminho do amor. Escuta Jesus! Porque nós, mesmo quando com boa vontade nos embrenhamos por caminhos que até parecem ser de amor, em última análise não passam de egoísmo mascarado de amor. Cuidado com os egoísmos mascarados de amor! Escuta-O, porque Jesus dir-te-á qual é o caminho do amor. Escuta-O.

Resplandecer é a primeira palavra: sede luminosos! A segunda: escutar, para não se enganar no caminho! E finalmente a terceira palavra: não ter medo. Não tenhais medo. Uma expressão que se repete muito na Bíblia. Concretamente no Evangelho, no momento da Transfiguração, as últimas palavras que Jesus disse aos discípulos foram estas: «Não tenhais medo» (Mt 17, 7).

A vós, jovens, que vivestes esta alegria (estava para dizer esta glória, e de certo modo este nosso encontro também é glória); a vós, que cultivais sonhos grandes mas frequentemente ofuscados pelo temor de que não se realizem; a vós, que às vezes pensais que não ides conseguir (por vezes assalta-nos um pouco de pessimismo); a vós, jovens, tentados a desanimar neste tempo, a julgar-vos talvez inadequados ou a esconder a angústia mascarando-a com um sorriso; a vós, jovens, que quereis mudar o mundo (é um bem que queirais mudar o mundo!) e que quereis lutar pela justiça e a paz; a vós, jovens, que investis na vida esforço e imaginação, ficando porém com a sensação de que não bastam; a vós, jovens, de quem a Igreja e o mundo têm necessidade como a terra tem de chuva; a vós, jovens, que sois o presente e o futuro… Sim, precisamente a vós, jovens, é que Jesus diz hoje: «Não tenhais medo», «não tenhais medo»! Num breve momento de silêncio, cada um repita para si mesmo, no próprio coração, estas palavras: «Não tenhais medo».

Queridos jovens, gostaria de poder fixar cada um de vós nos olhos e dizer: Não temas, não tenhas medo! Mais, tenho uma coisa belíssima para vos dizer: já não sou eu, mas é o próprio Jesus que vos fixa agora. Ele que vos conhece, conhece o coração de cada um de vós, conhece a vida de cada um de vós, conhece as alegrias, conhece as tristezas, os sucessos e os fracassos, conhece o vosso coração. E hoje aqui em Lisboa, nesta Jornada Mundial da Juventude, Ele diz-vos: «Não temais, não temais! Coragem, não tenhais medo!»

È bello quanto stiamo sperimentando con Gesù, ciò che abbiamo vissuto insieme, ed è bello come abbiamo pregato, con tanta gioia del cuore. Allora possiamo chiederci: cosa portiamo con noi ritornando alla vita quotidiana?

Vorrei rispondere a questo interrogativo con tre verbi, seguendo il Vangelo che abbiamo ascoltato. Che cosa portiamo? Brillare, ascoltare, non temere. Che cosa portiamo con noi? Rispondo con queste tre parole: brillare, ascoltare e non temere.

La prima: brillare. Gesù si trasfigura. Il Vangelo dice: «Il suo volto brillò come il sole» (Mt 17,2). Egli aveva da poco annunciato la sua passione e la morte di croce, frantumando così l’immagine di un Messia potente, mondano, e deludendo le attese dei discepoli. Ora, per aiutarli ad accogliere il progetto d’amore di Dio su ciascuno di noi, Gesù prende tre di loro, Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, li conduce sul monte e si trasfigura. E questo “bagno di luce” li prepara alla notte della passione.

Amici, cari giovani, anche oggi noi abbiamo bisogno di un po’ di luce, di un lampo di luce che sia speranza per affrontare tante oscurità che ci assalgono nella vita, tante sconfitte quotidiane, per affrontarle con la luce della risurrezione di Gesù. Perché Lui è la luce che non tramonta, è la luce che brilla anche nella notte. «Il nostro Dio ha fatto brillare i nostri occhi», dice il sacerdote Esdra (Esd 9,8). Il nostro Dio illumina. Illumina il nostro sguardo, illumina il nostro cuore, illumina la nostra mente, illumina il nostro desiderio di fare qualcosa nella vita. Sempre con la luce del Signore.

Ma vorrei dirvi che non diventiamo luminosi quando ci mettiamo sotto i riflettori, no, questo abbaglia. Non diventiamo luminosi. Non diventiamo luminosi quando esibiamo un’immagine perfetta, ben ordinata, ben rifinita, no; e neanche se ci sentiamo forti e vincenti, forti e vincenti, ma non luminosi. Noi diventiamo luminosi, brilliamo quando, accogliendo Gesù, impariamo ad amare come Lui. Amare come Gesù: questo ci rende luminosi, questo ci porta a fare opere di amore. Non t’ingannare, amica, amico, diventerai luce il giorno in cui farai opere di amore. Ma quando, invece di fare opere di amore verso gli altri, guardi a te stesso, come un egoista, lì la luce si spegne.

Il secondo verbo è ascoltare. Sul monte, una nube luminosa copre i discepoli. E questa nube, dalla quale parla il Padre, che cosa dice? «Ascoltatelo», «questi è il Figlio mio prediletto, ascoltatelo» (Mt 17,5). È tutto qui: tutto quello che c’è da fare nella vita sta in questa parola: ascoltatelo. Ascoltare Gesù. Tutto il segreto sta qui. Ascolta che cosa ti dice Gesù. “Io non so cosa mi dice”. Prendi il Vangelo e leggi quello che dice Gesù, quello che dice al tuo cuore. Perché Lui ha parole di vita eterna per noi, Lui rivela che Dio è Padre, è amore. Lui ci indica il cammino dell’amore. Ascolta Gesù. Perché noi, anche se con buona volontà, ci mettiamo su strade che sembrano di amore, ma in definitiva sono egoismi mascherati da amore. State attenti agli egoismi mascherati da amore! Ascoltalo, perché Lui ti dirà qual è il cammino dell’amore. Ascoltalo.

Brillare è la prima parola, siate luminosi; ascoltare, per non sbagliare strada; e infine la terza parola: non avere paura. Non abbiate paura. Una parola che nella Bibbia si ripete tanto, nei Vangeli: “non abbiate paura”. Queste furono le ultime parole che nel momento della Trasfigurazione Gesù disse ai discepoli: «Non temete» (Mt 17,7).

A voi giovani che avete vissuto questa gioia – stavo per dire questa gloria, e in effetti una specie di gloria lo è, questo nostro incontro –; a voi che coltivate sogni grandi ma spesso offuscati dal timore di non vederli realizzati; a voi che a volte pensate di non farcela – un po’ di pessimismo ci assale a volte –; a voi, giovani, tentati in questo tempo di scoraggiarvi, di giudicarvi forse inadeguati o di nascondere il dolore mascherandolo con un sorriso; a voi, giovani, che volete cambiare il mondo – ed è un bene che vogliate cambiare il mondo – e che volete lottare per la giustizia e la pace; a voi, giovani, che ci mettete impegno e fantasia nella vita, ma vi sembra che non bastino; a voi, giovani, di cui la Chiesa e il mondo hanno bisogno come la terra della pioggia; a voi, giovani, che siete il presente e il futuro; sì, proprio a voi, giovani, Gesù oggi dice: “Non temete!”, “Non abbiate paura!”.

Non sono più io, è Gesù stesso che vi guarda ora, vi guarda, Lui che vi conosce, conosce il cuore di ognuno di voi, conosce la vita di ognuno di voi, conosce le gioie, conosce le tristezze, i successi e i fallimenti, conosce il vostro cuore. E oggi Lui dice a voi, qui, a Lisbona, in questa Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù: “Non temete, non temete, coraggio, non abbiate paura!”.

«Seigneur, il est bon que nous soyons ici !» (Mt 17, 4). Ces paroles, que l'apôtre Pierre a adressées à Jésus sur la montagne de la Transfiguration, nous voulons aussi les faire nôtres après ces journées intenses. Tout ce que nous sommes en train de vivre avec Jésus est beau, ce que nous avons fait ensemble. Et la manière dont nous avons prié est belle, avec une grande joie dans le cœur. Nous pouvons alors nous demander : qu’est-ce que nous remporterons avec nous en retournant à vie quotidienne?

Je voudrais répondre à cette question par trois verbes, en suivant l’Évangile que nous avons entendu. Qu’est-ce que nous remporterons? : briller, écouter, ne pas craindre. Qu’est-ce que nous remporterons avec nous? Je réponds par ces trois mots: briller, écouter, ne pas craindre.

Le premier: Briller. Jésus est transfiguré. L’Évangile dit: «Son visage devint brillant comme le soleil» (Mt 17, 2). Il venait d’annoncer sa passion et sa mort sur la croix, brisant ainsi l’image d’un Messie puissant et mondain, décevant les attentes des disciples. Maintenant, pour les aider à accepter le projet d’amour de Dieu sur chacun de nous, Jésus prend trois d’entre eux, Pierre, Jacques et Jean, Il les conduit sur la montagne et est transfiguré. Ce “bain de lumière” les prépare à la nuit de la passion.

Mes amis, chers jeunes, nous avons aujourd’hui encore besoin d’un peu de lumières, d’un éclair de lumière qui soit espérance pour affronter tant d’obscurités qui nous assaillent dans la vie, tant de défaites quotidiennes, pour y faire face avec la lumière de la résurrection de Jésus. Il est la lumière qui ne se couche jamais, Il est la lumière qui brille même dans la nuit. «Notre Dieu a fait briller nos yeux», dit le prêter Esdras (Esd 9, 8). Notre Dieu illumine. Il illumine notre regard, Il illumine notre cœur, Il illumine notre esprit, Il illumine notre désir de faire quelque chose dans la vie. Toujours avec la lumière du Seigneur.

Mais je voudrais vous dire que nous ne devenons pas lumineux lorsque nous sommes sous les projecteurs, non, c’est une erreur. Nous ne devenons pas lumineux lorsque nous affichons une image parfaite, bien ordonnée, bien finie, non. Et non plus lorsque nous nous sentons forts et victorieux. Forts et victorieux mais pas lumineux. Nous brillons quand, en accueillant Jésus, nous apprenons à aimer comme Lui. Aimer comme Jésus : cela nous rend lumineux, cela nous conduit à accomplir des œuvres d'amour. Ne te trompe pas, mon ami, tu deviendras lumière le jour où tu feras des œuvres d'amour. Mais lorsque, au lieu de faire des œuvres d'amour envers les autres, tu te regardes toi-même, comme un égoïste, là, la lumière s'éteint.

Le deuxième verbe est écouter. Sur la montagne, une nuée lumineuse recouvre les disciples. Et le Père parle de cette nuée elle. Et que dit-il? «Écoutez-le», «Celui-ci est mon Fils bien aimé» (Mt 17, 5). Tout est là : tout ce qu’il y a à faire dans la vie réside dans ce mot : écoutez-le. Écouter Jésus. Tout le secret est là. Écoute ce que Jésus te dit. “Je ne sais pas ce qu'il me dit”. Prends l'Évangile et lis ce que Jésus dit, ce qu'il dit à ton cœur. Car Il a pour nous des paroles de vie éternelle, Il nous révèle que Dieu est Père, qu’Il est amour. Il nous montre le chemin de l'amour. Écoute Jésus. Car, même si c’est avec de la bonne volonté, nous nous engageons sur des chemins qui semblent être des chemins d'amour mais qui, en fin de compte, sont des égoïsmes déguisés en amour. Faites attention aux égoïsme déguisés en amour ! Écoute-le, car Il te dira quel est le chemin de l'amour. Écoute-le.

Briller est le premier mot, soyez lumineux ; écouter, pour ne pas s'égarer ; et enfin, le troisième mot : ne pas avoir peur. N'ayez pas peur. Un mot qui revient si souvent dans la Bible, dans les Évangiles : “N'ayez pas peur”. Ce sont les dernières paroles que Jésus adresse aux disciples au moment de la Transfiguration : “N'ayez pas peur” (Mt 17, 7).

À vous, jeunes, qui avez vécu cette joie, - j’allais dire cette gloire et, de fait, notre rencontre est une sorte de gloire – à vous qui nourrissez de grands rêves mais souvent obscurcis par la crainte de ne pas les voir réalisés; à vous qui pensez parfois ne pas y arriver – un peu de pessimisme nous assaille parfois - ; à vous, jeunes, qui, en ces temps, êtes tentés de vous décourager, de vous juger peut-être inadaptés ou de cacher la douleur en la masquant d’un sourire ; à vous, jeunes, qui voulez changer le monde – et c’est bien de vouloir changer le monde - et qui voulez lutter pour la justice et la paix ; à vous, jeunes, qui y mettez votre engagement et votre imagination, bien que cela vous semble ne pas suffire; à vous, jeunes, dont l’Église et le monde ont besoin comme la terre a besoin de pluie ; à vous, jeunes, qui êtes le présent et l’avenir ; oui, précisément à vous, jeunes, Jésus dit aujourd’hui : “N'ayez pas peur”.

Dans un bref moment de silence, que chacun répète à lui-même dans son cœur ces paroles: “N'ayez pas peur”.

After these exciting days, surely we feel like repeating the words of the Apostle Peter on the mount of the Transfiguration: “Lord, it is good for us to be here!” (Mt 17:4). Indeed, how good it has been to share this experience with Jesus, with one another, and to pray together with joyful hearts. Now, we can also ask an important question: What will we take back with us as we resume our daily lives?

I would like to answer this question with three verbs, drawing from the Gospel we have heard: to shine, to listen, and to be unafraid. What will we take back with us? I would respond with these three words: to shine, to listen, and to be unafraid

The first: to shine. Jesus is transfigured. The Gospel tells us: “his face shone like the sun” (Mt 17:2). Shortly before this, he had predicted his passion and death on the cross, shattering the disciples’ image of a powerful and worldly Messiah, and disappointing their expectations. Now, in order to help them embrace the loving plan that God has for each of us, Jesus takes three of the disciples, Peter, James, and John, and leads them up the mountain, where he is transfigured. Through this brilliant burst of light, Jesus prepares the disciples for the dark night of the Passion.

Dear young friends, today we too need something of this burst of light, so that it can fill us with hope as we face the many failures of each day and the darkness that assails us in life, and respond to them with the light of the resurrection of Jesus. For he is the light that never sets, the light that shines even in the dead of night. As the priest Ezra said, God has illumined our eyes (cf Ezra 9:8). Our God illumines: he illumines our vision, our hearts, our minds, our desire to do something with our lives. The Lord’s light always shines.

Yet, I would like to tell you that we do not radiate light by putting ourselves in the spotlight, for that type of light is blinding. No, we cannot illumine others by projecting a perfect, well-ordered, refined image of ourselves, or by appearing to be powerful and successful, strong but without light. No, we radiate light – we shine – by welcoming Jesus into our hearts and learning to love as he does. To love like Jesus: that is what makes us shine, makes us do works of love. Friends, I am telling you the truth: whenever you do works of love, you become light. But the moment you stop loving others and become self-centered, you extinguish your light.

The second verb is to listen. On the mountain, a bright cloud overshadows the disciples. And what does it tell us, this cloud from which the Father speaks? “This is my Son, the Beloved… listen to him!” (Mt 17:5). Listen to him. To listen to Jesus, that is life’s secret. Listen to what Jesus is saying to you. “But I don’t know what he is saying to me”. Well, take the Gospels and read there what Jesus is saying, what he is saying to your heart. For he has the words of eternal life for us, he reveals that God is our Father, that God is love. He shows us the way of love. Listen to Jesus; otherwise, even if we set out with good intentions along paths that seem to be of love, in the end those paths will be seen as selfishness disguised as love. Be careful of selfishness disguised as love! Listen to Jesus, for he will show you which paths are those of love. Listen to him.

The first word: to shine, so be radiant; then, listen in order not to take the wrong path; finally the third word: to be unafraid. Do not be afraid. We often find these words in the Bible, in the Gospels: “Do not be afraid”. These were the last words spoken by Jesus to the disciples at the moment of the Transfiguration: “Do not be afraid!” (Mt 17:7).

As young people, you have experienced these days of joy – I was about to say of glory, and indeed our encounters have been a kind of glory. You have great dreams, but often fear that they may not come true; sometimes you think that you are not up to the challenge, which is a kind of pessimism that can overcome us at times. As young people, you may be tempted at this time to lose heart, to think you fall short, or to disguise your pain with a smile. As young people, you want to change the world – and it is very good that you want to change the world – you want to work for justice and peace. You devote all your life’s energy and creativity to this, but it still seems insufficient. Yet, the Church and the world need you, the young, as much as the earth needs rain. To all of you, dear young people, who are the present and the future, yes to all of you, Jesus now says: “Have no fear”, “Do not be afraid!”.

Now, in a brief moment of silence, each of you repeat these words, in your own heart: “Do not be afraid!”

Dear young people, I would like to look into the eyes of each of you and say: Do not be afraid. I will tell you something else, also very beautiful: it is no longer I, but Jesus himself who is now looking at you. He knows each of your hearts, each of your lives; he knows your joys, your sorrows, your successes and failures. He knows your heart. Und dieses „Lichtbad“ bereitet sie auf die Nacht seines Leidens vor.

Freunde, liebe junge Menschen, auch heute brauchen wir etwas Licht, einen Lichtblitz, der Hoffnung sei, um so viel Dunkelheit zu begegnen, die uns im Leben überfällt, so viele tägliche Niederlagen, um ihnen mit dem Licht der Auferstehung Jesu zu begegnen. Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

Una palabra ha resonado muchas veces en estos días, y es: “gracias”, mejor dicho, “obrigado”. Es hermoso lo que el Patriarca de Lisboa nos acaba de explicar, que obrigado no sólo expresa la gratitud por lo que se ha recibido, sino también el deseo de corresponder al bien. En este acontecimiento de gracia, todos nosotros hemos recibido, y ahora, que nos preparamos para regresar a casa, el Señor nos hace sentir la necesidad de compartir también con los otros, testimoniando con alegría la gratuidad de Dios y lo que Dios puso en nuestros corazones.

Sin embargo, antes de despedirnos yo también quiero decir obrigado. En primer lugar, al Cardenal Clemente, y con él a la Iglesia y a todo el pueblo portugués: obrigado. Obrigado al señor Presidente, que nos ha acompañado en los eventos de estos días; obrigado a las instituciones nacionales y locales por el apoyo y la asistencia que nos han brindado; obrigado a los obispos, sacerdotes, consagrados y laicos; y obrigado a ti, Lisboa, que permanecerás en la memoria de estos jóvenes como “casa de fraternidad” y “ciudad de los sueños”. Expreso también mi gratitud al Cardenal Farrell —que ha rejuvenecido en estas Jornadas— y a quienes han preparado estas Jornadas, así como a cuantos las han acompañado con la oración. ¡Obrigado a los voluntarios, a ellos este aplauso de corazón por su gran servicio! Y un agradecimiento especial a quienes desde el cielo han velado por la JMJ, es decir, a los santos patronos del evento, y a uno en particular: a Juan Pablo II, que dio vida a las Jornadas Mundiales de la Juventud.

¡Y obrigado a todos ustedes, queridos jóvenes! Dios ve todo lo bueno que ustedes son, y sólo Él conoce lo que ha sembrado en sus corazones. Ustedes se van de aquí con lo que Dios sembró en el corazón, háganlo crecer, cuídenlo con esmero. Quisiera hacerles una recomendación: mantengan presentes en su mente y en su corazón los momentos más hermosos. Para que así, cuando lleguen los momentos de cansancio y de desánimo —que son inevitables—, y tal vez la tentación de dejar de caminar o encerrarse en ustedes mismos, con el recuerdo reaviven las experiencias y la gracia de estos días, porque ―no lo olviden nunca― esta es la realidad, esto son ustedes: ¡el santo Pueblo fiel de Dios que camina con la alegría del Evangelio! Me gustaría también enviar un saludo a los jóvenes que no han podido estar aquí presentes, pero que han participado en las iniciativas organizadas por sus países, por las Conferencias episcopales, por las Diócesis; y pienso, por ejemplo, en los hermanos y hermanas subsaharianos reunidos en Tánger. A todos gracias, gracias.

Y de manera particular, acompañamos con el afecto y la oración a quienes no han podido venir a causa de conflictos y guerras. En el mundo son muchas las guerras, son muchos los conflictos. Pensando en este continente, siento un gran dolor por la querida Ucrania, que sigue sufriendo tanto. Amigos, permítanme también yo, ya viejo, comparta con ustedes, jóvenes, un sueño que llevo en el corazón: el sueño de la paz, el sueño de los jóvenes que rezan por la paz, viven en paz y construyen un futuro de paz. Por medio del Ángelus pongamos el futuro de la humanidad en manos de María, Reina de la Paz. Y hay un último obrigado que quisiera subrayar al final: obrigado a nuestras raíces, a nuestros abuelos, que nos trasmitieron la fe, que nos trasmitieron el horizonte de una vida. Son nuestras raíces. Y de regreso a casa, sigan rezando por la paz. Quanto bem recebemos todos nós neste evento de graça! E agora o Senhor faz-nos sentir a necessidade de o partilhar também com os outros, dando alegremente testemunho do dom gratuito de Deus, do bem que Ele colocou nos nossos corações.

Mas, antes de nos despedirmos, quero também eu dizer «obrigado». Digo-o, em primeiro lugar, ao Cardeal Clemente e, nele, à Igreja e a todo o povo português: obrigado! Obrigado ao Senhor Presidente, que nos acompanhou nos eventos destes dias; obrigado às instituições nacionais e locais pelo apoio e assistência prestados; obrigado aos Bispos, sacerdotes, pessoas consagradas e leigos. E obrigado a ti, Lisboa, que permanecerás na memória destes jovens como «casa de fraternidade» e «cidade dos sonhos». Prima però di inviarvi desidero dire anch’io obrigado. Anzitutto al Cardinale Clemente, e con Lui alla Chiesa e all’intero popolo portoghese, obrigado. Obrigado al Signor Presidente, che ci ha accompagnato negli eventi di questi giorni. Obrigado alle Istituzioni nazionali e locali per il sostegno e l’assistenza forniti. Obrigado ai Vescovi, ai sacerdoti, ai consacrati e ai laici. Y obrigado a te, Lisbona, che rimarrai nella memoria di questi giovani come “casa di fraternità” e “città di sogni”! Our thanks must go particularly to those who watched over World Youth Day from above, namely the patron saints of the event: especially John Paul II, who brought these World Youth Days to life.

And obrigado to all of you, dear young people! God sees your goodness. He alone knows what he has sown in your hearts. You leave here with what God has sown in your hearts; take good care of it. I would like to recommend that you hold fast to the memory of these days, remembering the best moments, so that when times of fatigue and discouragement come, which are inevitable, and perhaps even the temptation to give up or close in on yourselves, you will be able to recall and relive the experiences and graces of these days. Indeed, never forget who you really are: the faithful holy People of God walking in the joy of the Gospel! I would also like to send a special greeting to the young people who could not be here, and who participated in local initiatives organized by the Dioceses and Bishops’ Conferences in their countries; I am thinking, for example, of our sub-Saharan brothers and sisters gathered in Tangier. A big thanks to all of you.

In a particular way, let us accompany with our affection and prayers those who could not be with us because of armed conflicts and wars. Indeed, there are many wars and conflicts in our world. Thinking of this continent, I feel great sorrow for beloved Ukraine, which continues to suffer greatly. Dear friends, allow me, as an older person, to share with you young people a dream that I carry within me: it is the dream of peace, the dream of young people praying for peace, living in peace and building a peaceful future. As we pray the Angelus, let us place the future of humanity into the hands of Mary, Queen of Peace.

There is one last obrigado I would like to emphasize: obrigado to our “roots”: our grandparents, who passed on the faith to us, who passed on the horizon of a lifetime. They are our roots. Now, as you return home, continue to pray for peace. What is more, you are a sign of peace for the world, showing how the various nationalities, languages and histories can unite instead of divide. Now, we come to an eagerly awaited moment: the announcement of the next stage of the journey. Before telling you the venue of the forty-first World Youth Day, I extend an invitation to each of you. I invite young people from all over the world to Rome in 2025, to celebrate together the Jubilee for Young People. I look forward to seeing you in 2025 for the celebration of the Jubilee for Young People. The next World Youth Day will take place in Asia: in South Korea, in Seoul in 2027! Thus, from the western border of Europe it will move to the Far East. This is a marvellous sign of the Church’s universality and of the dream of unity to which you bear witness!

Doch bevor ich euch aussende, möchte auch ich obrigado sagen. An erster Stelle an Kardinal Clemente, und mit ihm an die Kirche in Portugal und an das ganze portugiesische Volk, obrigado. Obrigado an den Herrn Präsidenten, der uns bei den Veranstaltungen dieser Tage begleitet hat; Obrigado an die nationalen und lokalen Einrichtungen für die Unterstützung und die Hilfestellung; Obrigado an die Bischöfe, die Priester, die Gottgeweihten und die Laien; und obrigado an dich, Lissabon, das du diesen jungen Menschen als „Haus der Geschwisterlichkeit“ und als „Stadt der Träume“ in Erinnerung bleiben wirst! Große Dankbarkeit spreche ich dann Kardinal Farrell, der sich in diesen Tagen verjüngt hat, und denjenigen aus, die diese Tage vorbereitet haben, sowie denjenigen, die sie mit dem Gebet begleitet haben. Und obrigado an euch alle, liebe Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene! Gott sieht all das Gute, das ihr seid. Er allein kennt das, was er in euren Herzen gesät hat. Ihr geht von hier fort zusammen mit alle dem, was Gott in euren Herzen gesät hat. Hütet es mit Sorgfalt. Ich möchte euch eine Empfehlung aussprechen: Erinnert euch daran, haltet die schönsten Momente im Gedächtnis und im Herzen fest, weil ihr dann, wenn mancher Moment der Mühsal und Entmutigung kommt – und diese sind unvermeidlich -, und vielleicht die Versuchung, auf dem Weg stehen zu bleiben oder euch in euch selbst zu verschließen, dass ihr dann durch die Erinnerung die Erfahrungen und die Gnade dieser Tage wieder aufleben lasst. Denn – vergesst das nie – dies ist die Wirklichkeit, dies seid ihr: das heilige, treue Volk Gottes, das in der Freude des Evangeliums unterwegs ist! Ich möchte auch die jungen Menschen grüßen, die nicht hier sein konnten, aber an Initiativen teilgenommen haben, die von ihren Ländern, von den Bischofskonferenzen, von den Bistümern organisiert wurden. Ich denke beispielsweise an die Brüder und Schwestern aus der Subsahara, die in Tanger versammelt sind. Allen ein Dankeschön, danke!

Insbesondere begleiten wir mit der Verbundenheit und den Gebeten diejenigen, die aufgrund von Konflikten und Kriegen nicht kommen konnten. In der Welt gibt es viele Kriege, es gibt viele Konflikte. Wenn ich an diesen Kontinent denke, empfinde ich großen Schmerz für die geschätzte Ukraine, die weiterhin sehr leidet. Liebe Freunde, erlaubt auch mir, als einem inzwischen alten Mann, mit euch jungen Menschen einen Traum zu teilen, den ich in mir hege: Es ist der Traum vom Frieden, der Traum von jungen Menschen, die für den Frieden beten, in Frieden leben und eine Zukunft des Friedens aufbauen. Durch den Angelus legen wir die Zukunft der Menschheit in die Hände Marias, der Königin des Friedens.

Und es gibt ein letztes Obrigado, das ich zum Schluss betonen möchte: Obrigado an unsere Wurzeln, an unsere Großeltern, die uns den Glauben weitergegeben haben, die den Horizont eines Lebens weitergegeben haben. Sie sind unsere Wurzeln. Und betet, wenn ihr nach Hause zurückkehrt, weiterhin für den Frieden. Ihr seid ein Zeichen des Friedens für die Welt, ein Zeugnis dafür, wie die verschiedenen Nationalitäten, die Sprachen, die Geschichte vereinigen können statt zu trennen. Ich verabrede mich mit den Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen aus der ganzen Welt im Jahr 2025 in Rom, um gemeinsam das Jubiläum der jungen Menschen zu feiern! Und der nächste Weltjugendtag wird in Asien stattfinden: in Südkorea, in Seoul! Er wird sich also 2027 von der westlichen Grenze Europas in den Fernen Osten verlagern: Das ist ein schönes Zeichen für die Universalität der Kirche und für den Traum von der Einheit, dessen Zeugen ihr seid!

Sie waren mit uns hier, aber sie sind immer bei uns, sie verlieren unser Leben nicht aus den Augen, sie lieben unser Leben wie niemand sonst: obrigado dir, unserem Herrn Jesus; obrigado dir, unserer Mutter Maria. وشكرًا (obrigado) لكم جميعًا، أيّها الشّباب الأعزّاء! الله يرى كلّ خير فيكم، فهو وحده يعلَم ما زرعه في قلوبكم. ستذهبون من هنا مع ما زرعه الله في قلوبكم: اجعلوه ينموا فيكم، وحافظوا عليه بعناية. أريد أن أوصيكم وصيّة: تذكّروا واحفظوا في أذهانكم وقلوبكم أجمل اللحظات من هذه الأيام، لأنّه بهذه الطّريقة، عندما تأتي لحظة مِن التّعب والإحباط - وهذا أمرٌ لا بدّ منه -، وربما تراودكم التّجربة لأن تتوقّفوا في المسيرة أو أن تنغلقوا على أنفسكم، أحيُوا فيكم من خلال الذّكرى خبرة ونعمة هذه الأيام، لأنّه - لا تنسَوا هذا أبدًا - هذا هو الواقع، هذا ما أنتم: شعب الله المقدّس الأمين الذي يسير في فرح الإنجيل! يسرّني أيضًا أن أُرسِلَ تحيّة إلى الشّباب الذين لم يتمكّنوا من الحضور هنا، لكنّهم شاركوا في مبادرات نظمّتها في بلدانهم المجالس الأسقفيّة والأبرشيّات. أفكّر، مثلًا، في الإخوة والأخوات من جنوب الصّحراء المجتمعين في طنجة (Tangeri). شكرًا لكم جميعًا، شكرًا!
