Questa mattina, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza una Delegazione della “Catholic Extension Society”.

Pubblichiamo di seguito il saluto che il Papa ha rivolto ai presenti nel corso dell’Udienza:

Saluto del Santo Padre

Eminenza, eccellenza,

cari amici,

rivolgo un cordiale benvenuto a tutti voi della Catholic Extension Society, che vi siete riuniti questa settimana a Roma. La vostra presenza mi offre l’opportunità di esprimervi sentita gratitudine per l’impegno nel provvedere assistenza alle diocesi missionarie, in particolare negli Stati Uniti, e nel prendervi cura delle necessità dei poveri e dei più vulnerabili. Vi ringrazio anche del prezioso contributo, sia a livello ecclesiale che civile, per la ricostruzione a Porto Rico in seguito agli uragani e ai terremoti che hanno devastato l’isola negli ultimi anni. E ancora, mi congratulo con Suor Norma Pimentel, vincitrice del Premio “Spirit of Francis”, per il servizio che presta a tanti uomini, donne e bambini che giungono al confine meridionale degli Stati Uniti – esa frontera es caliente caliente – in cerca di un futuro migliore. Ed è pure bello vedere qui rappresentanti di gruppi di varie estrazioni culturali che la Catholic Extension Society sostiene. Grazie!

Voi, nell’intento di edificare il Corpo di Cristo, la Chiesa (cfr Ef 4,12), e nel dare voce a coloro che spesso sono senza voce, testimoniate la dignità conferita da Dio a ogni persona. Ciò è particolarmente importante al giorno d’oggi, mentre la Chiesa intera sta intraprendendo un percorso comune sulla via della sinodalità. Ascoltare e includere le esperienze e le prospettive di tutti, specialmente di coloro che si trovano ai margini della società, arricchisce la vita e il ministero ecclesiali; perché la Chiesa è come un grande arazzo, fatto di tanti singoli fili che provengono da popoli, lingue e culture differenti, ma sono intessuti in unità dallo Spirito Santo. Lo Spirito, infatti, crea unità armonizzando la molteplicità delle membra del Corpo di Cristo e la diversità dei loro doni. In proposito, mi rallegro per la vostra sollecitudine nel porre al centro dell’azione pastorale della Chiesa quanti sono spesso vittime dell’odierna “cultura dello scarto”; in tal modo la loro voce può essere udita e la società intera può trarne beneficio.

Cari amici, vi incoraggio a continuare a esprimere “lo stile di Dio” nell’opera che svolgete. Lo stile di Dio non è mai distante, distaccato o indifferente. Al contrario, è uno stile di vicinanza, compassione e tenerezza. Questo è lo stile di Dio: cercanía, compasión y ternura. Dios va así, eso es lo estilo que tiene. Auspico che il vostro servizio rispecchi sempre queste qualità, vicinanza, compassione e tenerezza – cercanía, compasión y ternura –, mostrando che il Signore si avvicina alla nostra vita, che è mosso a compassione per quanti si trovano in situazioni difficili, che il suo amore ci chiama a metterci in relazione con Lui e a vedere il nostro prossimo come un vero fratello o una vera sorella. La Chiesa è dunque grata per ogni espressione di carità fraterna e di sollecitudine verso chi è nel bisogno, perché così l’amorevole misericordia di Dio diviene visibile e il tessuto della società si consolida e si rinnova.

Desidero esprimervi ancora una volta la mia riconoscenza per il vostro impegno nella Chiesa e vi faccio i migliori auguri per il vostro lavoro. Su di voi, sulle vostre famiglie e su tutti coloro che servite, invoco il Signore, perché vi benedica con la sua sapienza e con la sua fortezza. E vi chiedo, per favore, di pregare per me perché anche io ne ho bisogno! Grazie.

Dear Friends,

I offer a cordial welcome to all of you from the Catholic Extension Society who have gathered this week in Rome. Your presence gives me the opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for your efforts in providing assistance to missionary Dioceses, particularly in the United States, and in caring for the needs of the poor and most vulnerable. I thank you, too, for your valuable contributions to the rebuilding of the Church and the broader society in Puerto Rico, following the various hurricanes and earthquakes which brought such devastation to the island in recent years. As well, I congratulate Sister Norma Pimentel, the recipient of the Spirit of Francis Award, for her service to the many men, women and children arriving at the southern border of the United States – that border is really hot – in search of a better future. It is a joy for me also to recognize the presence of leaders from culturally diverse groups that the Catholic Extension Society supports. Thank you!

In striving to build up the Body of Christ, the Church (cf. Eph 4:12), by giving a voice to those who are frequently voiceless, you bear witness to the God-given dignity of every person. This is particularly important at the present time, as the entire Church is undertaking a journey together on the path of synodality. Listening to and including the experiences and perspectives of all, especially those on the margins of society, enriches the Church’s life and ministry. For the Church is like a rich tapestry, made up of many individual threads that come from various peoples, languages and cultures, yet woven into a unity by the Holy Spirit. Indeed, the Spirit creates unity by harmonizing the multiplicity of the members of the Body of Christ and the diversity of their gifts. In this regard, I am pleased to know of your concern to place those who are often victims of today’s “throw-away culture” at the heart of the Church’s pastoral activity; in this way, their voices can be heard and all can benefit.

Dear friends, I encourage you as well to continue to express “God’s style” in the work that you do. God’s style is never distant, detached or indifferent. Instead, it is one of closeness, compassion and tender love. This is God’s style: closeness, compassion and tender love. God is like this, this is his style. It is my hope that your service will always reflect these qualities of closeness, compassion and tender love, showing that God draws near to our lives, that he is moved to compassion for those in difficult situations and that his love calls us to be in relationship with him and to see our neighbour as truly a brother or a sister. The Church, therefore, remains grateful for every expression of fraternal charity and care shown to all who are in need, for in this way, God’s loving mercy becomes visible and the fabric of society is strengthened and renewed.

Once again, I express my gratitude for your commitment to the Church, and I offer my prayerful best wishes for your work. Upon you, your families and all those whom you serve, I invoke the Lord’s blessings of wisdom and strength, and I ask you, please, to pray for me because I also need it! Thank you.
