Caro confratello nell’episcopato,
Il Venerdì santo sentiamo risuonare il racconto della Passione del Signore. Tra i segni che accompagnano la morte di Gesù, viene riferito che “il velo del tempio si squarciò, la terra tremò e le rocce si spezzarono” (Mt 27,51-52). Proprio mentre l’umanità si stava lentamente risollevando dalle conseguenze della pandemia, abbiamo assistito poche settimane orsono agli sconvolgimenti provocati dal terribile terremoto. Esso è stato percepito anche a Gerusalemme, ma ha provocato danni e seminato un numero altissimo di morti in Siria e nel sud della Turchia, terre visitate dalla predicazione apostolica e luoghi in cui è fiorito il cristianesimo delle origini con insigni tradizioni monastiche ed eremitiche, o scuole teologiche che hanno contribuito allo sviluppo della comprensione del mistero di Cristo di cui noi tutti siamo debitori, anche se spesso non le conosciamo, a causa delle persecuzioni che le estinsero.
Al dramma della guerra, che si è protratta per oltre dodici anni in Siria, si è aggiunta la devastazione provocata dai palazzi crollati a causa delle forti scosse sismiche: tanti nostri fratelli e sorelle nella fede e nell’umanità hanno affrontato un nuovo esodo dalle loro case, questa volta non più per il rischio delle bombe o per quello che aveva significato l’invasione della Piana di Ninive in Iraq, ma perché anche la casa, dimora degli affetti più cari, il rifugio della propria famiglia, ha vacillato rischiando di diventare e spesso trasformandosi di fatto in una tomba di morte.
Le devastazioni della lunga guerra e il recente terremoto, ancora una volta hanno messo a nudo la fragilità delle sicurezze a cui l’umanità affida la propria speranza, e ci fanno sentire più forte il desiderio di radicarsi nella Roccia della fedeltà di Dio nella Pasqua di Cristo, morto e risorto. Abbiamo guardato alla sua immagine profanata qualche settimana fa dagli atti vandalici presso la chiesa della Flagellazione, lungo la Via Dolorosa, a Gerusalemme. In quel Crocifisso mutilato siamo invitati a riconoscere il dolore di tanti nostri fratelli e sorelle che hanno visto egualmente straziati i corpi dei propri cari sotto le macerie o colpiti dalle bombe, e a percorrere con loro, mano nella mano, la via della Croce, sapendo che ogni sepolcro, proprio come quello della Basilica dell’Anastasis, nella Città Santa, non è l’ultima parola sulla vita dell’uomo di ogni tempo. La presenza preziosa dei Frati della Custodia di Terra Santa non garantisce soltanto il mantenimento dei santuari, ma custodisce la vita delle comunità cristiane, spesso tentate di smarrire la loro vocazione ad essere popolo della Pasqua nelle terre benedette dalla presenza del Redentore.
Molte case dei Religiosi e Religiose Francescane e di altri Ordini e Congregazioni, in Siria come in Turchia, in queste settimane sono diventate tende e riparo per gli sfollati, ma più in generale in tutta la Terra Santa rimangono sorgenti di speranza attraverso la cura dei più piccoli, la formazione scolastica, l’accompagnamento delle madri in difficoltà, il chinarsi sugli anziani e gli ammalati, oltre che offrire attraverso progetti abitativi per le nuove famiglie e creare posti di lavoro, perchè valga la pena continuare a rimanere nei Luoghi della Salvezza.
La Chiesa universale e l’umanità tutta si sono mostrate ancora una volta attente nel soccorrere l’emergenza legata ad una catastrofe naturale, ma il Santo Padre Francesco, nel solco di quanto affermato dai Suoi Predecessori, anche quest’anno incarica il Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali di ravvivare l’invito a rimanere solidali con la comunità cristiana della Terra Santa, come già fece l’Apostolo delle Genti, san Paolo, con la colletta avviata per la chiesa di Gerusalemme. Il gesto materiale dell’offerta, cui Egli ci chiama, sia accompagnato anzitutto da una parola che faccia riscoprire il senso di mantenere viva la memoria delle origini, come richiama il profeta Isaia: “considerate la roccia da cui foste tagliati” (Is 51,1). La Chiesa si è diffusa nel mondo con la predicazione degli apostoli, e ciascuno di noi col Battesimo è divenuto la pietra chiamata a restare unita al fondamento, che è Cristo Signore, per poter costruire un edificio spirituale: in Gerusalemme sono le nostre sorgenti, e noi vogliamo restare uniti e solidali con i fratelli e le sorelle che là continuano a testimoniare il Vangelo. Custodiamo la memoria storica del Cenacolo, rendendo cenacoli di preghiera e carità le nostre case e le nostre parrocchie. Rinforziamo gli spazi della Basilica del Santo Sepolcro e riportiamoli alla loro luce, ma facciamo abitare i nostri cuori dall’annuncio del Risorto. Manteniamo la Basilica della Annunciazione a Nazareth, ma lasciamo sconvolgere le nostre vite ogni giorno dalla Parola del Signore come fece la Vergine Maria. Uniamoci agli angeli festanti dei mosaici della Basilica della Natività a Betlemme, ma prendiamoci cura di quanti nascono e restano ai margini della nostra società, come fu per il Santo Bimbo nella Grotta attorniato soltanto dai pastori.
Vi chiedo con il cuore che la Colletta del Venerdì Santo sia dunque generosa da parte di tutti, come tanti piccoli oboli della vedova lodata da Gesù nel Vangelo.
A nome del Santo Padre Francesco ringrazio i Vescovi, i parroci, tutte le comunità religiose e parrocchiali, come pure i Commissari di Terra Santa che ovunque nel mondo aiutano la realizzazione di questo annuale pellegrinaggio alle sorgenti dell’esistenza cristiana. Grazie, soprattutto a nome di quelli che torneranno ad una vita più degna, grazie alla vostra bontà.

Cher confrère dans l’épiscopat
Le Vendredi Saint nous entendons résonner le récit de la Passion du Seigneur. Au travers des signes qui accompagnèrent la mort de Jésus, il est fait référence à celui-ci: «Le rideau du Sanctuaire se déchira en deux, depuis le haut jusqu’en bas; la terre trembla et les rochers se fendirent.» (Mt 27, 51-52). Alors que l’humanité se remettait lentement des conséquences de la pandémie, nous avons assisté il y a quelques semaines aux bouleversements provoqués par ce terrible tremblement de terre. S’il a été également ressenti à Jérusalem, il a provoqué des dégâts et causé un très grand nombre de morts en Syrie et dans le sud de la Turquie, ces terres visitées par la prédication apostolique, ces lieux où le christianisme des origines a fleuri avec d’éminentes traditions monastiques et érémitiques, des écoles théologiques qui ont contribué au développement de la compréhension du mystère du Christ dont nous sommes tous débiteurs, même si nous ne les connaissons pas bien, à cause des persécutions qui les ont fait disparaitre.
Au drame de la guerre qui a duré plus de douze ans en Syrie, s’est ajoutée la dévastation provoquée par l’effondrement d’immeubles à cause de fortes secousses sismiques. Beaucoup de nos frères et sœurs dans la foi et dans l’humanité ont dû fuir leurs maisons, non pas à cause du risque des bombes ou de l’invasion de la plaine de Ninive en Irak, mais parce que leurs maisons, le lieu intime des affections les plus chères, le refuge de leur famille, ont chancelé au risque de devenir, et même se transformant souvent en une véritable tombe mortelle.
Les ravages de la guerre et du récent tremblement de terre ont encore une fois révélé la fragilité des pierres auxquelles l’humanité confie ses espoirs et sa sécurité. Ces catastrophes nous font encore plus ressentir le besoin de nous enraciner dans le Roc de la fidélité de Dieu dans la Pâque du Christ, mort et ressuscité. Il y a quelques semaines nous avons regardé son image profanée par les actes de vandalisme commis dans l’église de la Flagellation, sur la Via Dolorosa, à Jérusalem. Dans ce Crucifix mutilé, nous sommes invités à reconnaître la douleur de tant de nos frères et sœurs qui ont vu les corps de leurs proches meurtris sous les décombres ou frappés par les bombes, et à parcourir avec eux, main dans la main, le chemin de la Croix, sachant que chaque sépulcre, le nôtre comme celui de la Basilique de l’Anastasis de la Ville Sainte, n’est pas le dernier mot de la vie de l’homme quelque soit l’époque. La précieuse présence des Frères de la Custodie de Terre Sainte ne garantit pas seulement le maintien matériel des sanctuaires, mais garde et protège la vie des communautés chrétiennes souvent tentées d’abandonner leur vocation à être le peuple témoin de la Pâque sur ces terres bénies par la présence du Rédempteur.
Ces dernières semaines, beaucoup de maisons religieuses des Franciscains et d’autres Ordres et Congrégations en Syrie comme en Turquie sont devenues comme des tentes et des abris pour les personnes évacuées à cause du séisme. Mais plus généralement dans toute la Terre Sainte, elles sont comme des oasis d’espérance à travers l’attention prodiguée aux plus petits, par la formation scolaire, l’accompagnement des mères en difficulté, le soin apporté aux personnes âgées comme aux malades, en soutenant aussi des projets de logements pour les jeunes familles et la création d’emplois pour qu’il vaille la peine de demeurer dans ces Lieux saints du Salut.
L’Eglise universelle et l’humanité toute entière se sont montrées une fois de plus attentives à secourir ces personnes face l’urgence causée par cette catastrophe naturelle. Le Saint-Père François, à la suite de ses Prédécesseurs, a chargé le Dicastère pour les Eglises orientales de raviver l’invitation à demeurer solidaires de la communauté chrétienne de Terre Sainte, comme le faisait déjà l’Apôtre des Nations, saint Paul, avec la collecte entreprise pour l’Eglise de Jérusalem. Que le geste matériel de l’offrande auquel il nous invite soit vivifié par cette parole qui nous fait redécouvrir le sens de maintenir vivante la mémoire des origines: «Regardez le rocher dans lequel vous avez été taillés» (Is 51, 1). L’Eglise s’est diffusée dans le monde par la prédication des Apôtres, et chacun de nous par le Baptême est devenu la pierre appelée à rester unie au fondement qu’est le Christ Seigneur, pour pouvoir construire un édifice spirituel. A Jérusalem, ce sont nos sources, et nous voulons rester unis et solidaires de nos frères et sœurs qui continuent là-bas à témoigner de l’Évangile. Gardons la mémoire historique du Cénacle, mais faisons de nos maisons et de nos paroisses des cénacles de prière et de charité. Renforçons la construction de la Basilique du Saint-Sépulcre en rendant ces lieux à leur lumière, mais faisons surtout habiter en nos cœurs l’annonce du Ressuscité. Maintenons la Basilique de l’Annonciation à Nazareth, mais laissons nos vies être bouleversées quotidiennement par la Parole du Seigneur comme pour la Vierge Marie. Joignons-nous aux anges en fête des mosaïques de la Basilique de la Nativité de Bethléem, mais n’oublions pas de prendre particulièrement soin de ceux qui naissent et restent en marge de notre société, comme ce fut le cas pour le Saint Enfant de la Grotte entouré seulement des bergers.
De tout cœur, je demande à tous que cette Collecte du Vendredi Saint soit généreuse, comme autant de petites oboles à l’image de celle de la veuve qu’admira et loua Jésus dans l’Evangile.
Au nom du Saint-Père François, je remercie tous les Evêques, les curés, toutes les communautés religieuses et paroissiales, ainsi que les commissaires de Terre Sainte qui, partout dans le monde, aident à la réalisation de ce pèlerinage annuel aux sources de l’existence chrétienne. Merci, surtout au nom de tous ceux qui retrouveront une vie plus digne grâce à votre bonté.

Dear Brother in the Episcopate,
In the account of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, we hear reported among the signs accompanying the death of Jesus, “the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, and the rocks split” (Mt 27:51-52). Just as humanity was slowly recovering from the consequences of the pandemic, a few weeks ago we witnessed the upheavals caused by the terrible earthquake. Felt even in Jerusalem, it caused great damage and a very high number of deaths in Syria and in southern Turkey, lands visited by the Apostles, where early Christianity thrived with outstanding monastic and eremitical traditions. We are all indebted to the theological schools that flourished there and contributed to the development of the understanding of the mystery of Christ, even if we often do not know them due to the persecutions that extinguished them.
To the drama of the war that has lasted for over twelve years in Syria, the strong seismic shocks added devastation caused by collapsed buildings. Many of our brothers and sisters in faith and in humanity have faced a new exodus from their homes, this time no longer for fear of bombs or for what the invasion of the Plain of Nineveh had meant in Iraq, but because their very houses trembled. The refuges of families and intimate dwellings of their deepest affections faced the risk, alas often realised, of turning into deadly tombs.
The ravages of the long war and the recent earthquake have once again laid bare the fragility of the securities to which humanity entrusts its hope, and make us feel more strongly the desire to take root in the Rock of God’s fidelity in the Pasch of Christ, dead and risen. We saw His image desecrated a few weeks ago by vandalism at the Church of the Flagellation, along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. That mutilated Crucifix invites us to recognize the pain of so many of our brothers and sisters who have seen the bodies of their loved ones tortured under the rubble or hit by bombs. We are called to walk the way of the Cross hand in hand with them, knowing that, in every age, each sepulchre, just like that of the Basilica of the Anastasis in the Holy City, is not the last word on the life of man. The precious presence of the Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land not only guarantees the maintenance of the sanctuaries, but also safeguards the life of the Christian communities, often tempted to lose their vocation to be Easter people in the lands blessed by the presence of the Redeemer.
In recent weeks, many houses of Franciscan Friars and Sisters, as well as those of other Religious Orders and Congregations, have become tents and shelters for the displaced in Syria as in Turkey. More generally throughout the Holy Land, they remain sources of hope by caring for the littlest ones, educating schoolchildren and youth, accompanying mothers in difficulty, attending to the elderly and the sick, as well as offering housing projects for new families and creating jobs, so that it is worthwhile continuing to stay in the Places of Salvation.
The universal Church and all of humanity have once again shown themselves attentive in this emergency, coming to the aid of those afflicted by the natural catastrophe. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, following his predecessors, this year too has instructed the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches to revive the invitation to solidarity with the Christian community of the Holy Land as Saint Paul, the Apostle to the Nations, had already done with a collection for the Church of Jerusalem. The material gesture to which he calls us is accompanied above all by a word that rekindles our sense of keeping alive the memory of the origins, as the prophet Isaiah recalls: “Consider the rock from which you were hewn” (Is 51:1). The Church spread throughout the world with the preaching of the Apostles, and each of us through Baptism, has become a stone called to remain united to the foundation, which is Christ the Lord, in order to construct a spiritual building. In Jerusalem are our wellsprings, and we want to remain united with the brothers and sisters who continue to testify to the Gospel there. Let us cherish the historical memory of the Upper Room, making our homes and parishes cenacles of prayer and charity. Let us reinforce the spaces of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and restore them to light, but above all, let the announcement of the Risen Lord abide in our hearts. Let us maintain the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, but let us allow our lives to be changed daily by the Word of the Lord as the Virgin Mary did. Let us join the rejoicing angels in the mosaics of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, but let us take care of those who are born and remain on the margins of our society, like the Holy Child in the cave, surrounded only by shepherds.
I ask you with all my heart that the Good Friday Collection therefore be generous, like so many “mites” of the widow praised by Jesus in the Gospel.
On behalf of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, I thank the bishops, the parish priests, all the religious and parish communities, as well as the commissioners of the Holy Land, who everywhere in the world help to achieve this annual pilgrimage to the sources of Christian existence. Lieber Mitbruder im Bischofsamt,
Am Karfreitag hören wir den eindringlichen Bericht von der Passion des Herrn. Unter den Zeichen, die den Tod Jesu begleiten, wird berichtet, dass „der Vorhang im Tempel von oben bis unten entzweiriss. Die Erde bebte und die Felsen spalteten sich.“ (Mt 27,51-52). Gerade als die Menschheit dabei war, sich langsam von den Folgen der Pandemie zu erholen, wurden wir vor einigen Wochen Zeugen der Verwüstungen, die das schreckliche Erdbeben provoziert hat. Es war auch in Jerusalem zu spüren und verursachte Schäden und forderte sehr viele Todesopfer in Syrien und in der Südtürkei, Gebiete, die von der apostolischen Verkündigung erreicht wurden und in denen das frühe Christentum mit bedeutenden monastischen und eremitischen Traditionen oder theologischen Schulen blühte, die zur Herausbildung des Verständnisses des Geheimnisses Christi beigetragen haben, und denen wir alle zu Dank verpflichtet sind, auch wenn wir sie aufgrund der Verfolgungen, die sie auslöschten, oft nicht kennen.
Zum Drama des Krieges, der in Syrien seit über zwölf Jahren andauert, sind die Verwüstungen der durch das Erdbeben eingestürzten Gebäude hinzugekommen: So sahen sich viele unserer Brüder und Schwestern, denen wir im Glauben und im Menschsein verbunden sind, mit einem neuen Exodus aus ihren Häusern konfrontiert, diesmal nicht mehr wegen der Gefahr von Bomben oder dem, was die Invasion der Ninive-Ebene im Irak bedeutet hatte, sondern weil auch das Zuhause, die eine Heimstatt der wertvollsten Gefühle der Zuneigung und Zufluchtsort der Familie darstellt, ins Wanken geraten ist und sich in ein Grab des Todes zu verwandeln drohte, wie dies auch oft geschehen ist.
Die Verwüstungen des langen Krieges und das jüngste Erdbeben haben erneut die Zerbrechlichkeit der Sicherheiten vor Augen geführt, denen die Menschen ihre Hoffnung anvertraut hatten, und lassen noch stärker den Wunsch verspüren, uns im Felsen der Treue Gottes zu verwurzeln, im Pascha des gestorbenen und auferstandenen Christus. Wir haben sein Bild gesehen, das vor einigen Wochen durch Vandalismus in der Geißelungskirche an der Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem geschändet wurde. Wir sind eingeladen, in diesem verstümmelten Kruzifix den Schmerz so vieler unserer Brüder und Schwestern zu erkennen, die die Leichname ihrer Lieben unter den Trümmern verstümmelt oder von Bomben getroffen gesehen haben. Wir wollen Hand in Hand mit ihnen den Kreuzweg zu gehen, in dem Wissen, dass jedes Grab, wie das in der Auferstehungsbasilika in der Heiligen Stadt, nicht das letzte Wort über das Leben der Menschheit in jedem Zeitalter darstellt. Die wertvolle Präsenz der Brüder der Kustodie des Heiligen Landes garantiert nicht nur die Instandhaltung der Heiligtümer, sondern schützt auch das Leben der christlichen Gemeinschaften, die oft versucht sind, ihre Berufung aufzugeben, das österliche Volk in den durch die Gegenwart des Erlösers gesegneten Ländern zu sein.
Viele Ordenshäuser der Franziskanerinnen und Franziskaner und anderer Orden und Kongregationen, in Syrien wie in der Türkei, sind in diesen Wochen zu Stätten der Zuflucht und des Schutzes für die Vertriebenen geworden. Aber auch ganz grundsätzlich sind diese Ordenshäuser Quellen der Hoffnung für das ganze Heiligen Land, indem sie sich um die Kleinen kümmern, Schulunterricht anbieten, Mütter in Schwierigkeiten begleiten, sich für die Alten und Kranken einsetzen, Wohnprojekte für neue Familien initiieren und Arbeitsplätze schaffen, damit es sich auch weiterhin für die Menschen vor Ort lohnt, an den Stätten des Heils zu bleiben.
Die Weltkirche und die gesamte Menschheit haben sich im Zusammenhang mit der Naturkatastrophe einmal mehr als aufmerksame Helfer in der Not erwiesen. Dennoch hat der Heilige Vater Franziskus auch in diesem Jahr das Dikasterium für die orientalischen Kirchen angewiesen, den Appell zur Solidarität mit den Christen des Heiligen Landes wieder aufleben zu lassen, wie es der Völkerapostel Paulus mit der für die Kirche von Jerusalem initiierten Kollekte getan hat. Möge diese Geste einer materiellen Opfergabe, zu der Er uns aufruft, vor allem von einem Wort begleitet sein, das uns die Bedeutung der Erinnerung an die Ursprünge wiederentdecken lässt, wie der Prophet Jesaja sagt: „Blickt auf den Felsen, aus dem ihr gehauen seid.“ (Jes 51,1). Die Kirche hat sich durch die Verkündigung der Apostel in der ganzen Welt ausgebreitet, und jeder von uns ist durch die Taufe zu einem Stein geworden, der berufen ist, mit dem Fundament, das Christus, der Herr, ist, verbunden zu bleiben, um ein geistliches Gebäude zu errichten: In Jerusalem liegen unsere Quellen, und wir wollen mit unseren Brüdern und Schwestern, die dort weiterhin das Evangelium bezeugen, vereint und solidarisch bleiben. Bewahren wir die historische Erinnerung an den Abendmahlssaal, indem wir unsere Häuser und Gemeinden zu Abendmahlssälen des Gebets und der Nächstenliebe machen. Beleben wir die Räume der Grabeskirche neu und bringen wir sie wieder zum Leuchten. Öffnen wir aber darüber hinaus unsere Herzen für die Verkündigung des Auferstandenen. Erhalten wir die Verkündigungsbasilika in Nazareth, und lassen aber außerdem unser Leben jeden Tag durch das Wort des Herrn überwältigen, wie die Jungfrau Maria es tat. Schließen wir uns den festlichen Engeln der Mosaiken der Geburtsbasilika in Bethlehem an, und kümmern wir uns darüber hinaus auch um diejenigen, die nach ihrer Geburt am Rande unserer Gesellschaft bleiben, wie es dem Heiligen Kind in der Geburtsgrotte geschah, in der nur Hirten präsent waren.
Ich bitte daher von ganzem Herzen, dass die Karfreitagskollekte von allen großzügig unterstützt werden möge, wie die vielen kleinen Gaben der Witwe, die Jesus im Evangelium preist.
Im Namen des Heiligen Vaters Franziskus danke ich den Bischöfen, den Pfarrern, allen Ordensgemeinschaften und Pfarrgemeinden sowie den Kommissaren des Heiligen Landes, die überall auf der Welt dazu beitragen, diese jährliche Wallfahrt zur Quelle der christlichen Existenz zu ermöglichen. Ich danke euch besonders im Namen derer, die dank eurer Güte zu einem würdigeren Leben zurückkehren werden.

El Viernes Santo sentimos resonar la historia de la Pasión del Señor. Entre los signos que acompañan a la muerte de Jesús, se narra que «La cortina del templo se rasgó de arriba abajo en dos partes, la tierra tembló y se hendieron las rocas» (Mt 27,51-52). Justo cuando la humanidad se estaba recuperando lentamente de las consecuencias de la pandemia, tuvimos que asistir, hace todavía pocas semanas, a las graves perturbaciones provocadas por el terrible terremoto. Aunque este también se notó en Jerusalén, donde, sin embargo, causó daños y sembró un número altísimo de muertos fue en Siria y en el sur de Turquía, tierras que conocieron la predicación apostólica y lugares en los que floreció el cristianismo de los orígenes, con insignes tradiciones monásticas y eremíticas, y con escuelas teológicas que han contribuido al desarrollo de la comprensión del misterio de Cristo, de las que todos nosotros somos deudores, aun cuando frecuentemente no las conocemos, debido a las persecuciones que causaron su extinción.
Al drama de la guerra, que en Siria dura ya más de doce años, se ha añadido la devastación provocada por los edificios derrumbados a causa de las violentas sacudidas sísmicas: tantos hermanos nuestros en la fe y en la humanidad han afrontado un nuevo éxodo de sus casas, esta vez ya no por el peligro de las bombas, o a motivo de lo que había significado la invasión de la Meseta de Nínive en Irak, sino porque también la casa, hogar que contiene lo más entrañable al corazón, refugio de la propia familia, ha vacilado, con el riesgo de convertirse, y con frecuencia transformándose de hecho, en una tumba de muerte.
Las devastaciones de la larga guerra y el reciente terremoto han puesto al descubierto, una vez más, la fragilidad de las seguridades en las que la humanidad pone sus propias esperanzas, y nos han hecho sentir más fuertemente el deseo de echar raíces en la Roca de la fidelidad de Dios en la Pascua de Cristo, muerto y resucitado. Hemos dirigido la mirada a su imagen profanada, alguna semana atrás, por los actos vandálicos en la Iglesia de la Flagelación, a lo largo de la Vía Dolorosa, en Jerusalén. En ese Crucifijo mutilado se nos invita a reconocer el dolor de tantos hermanos y hermanas nuestros que, igualmente, han visto los cuerpos de sus seres queridos destrozados bajo los escombros o alcanzados por las bombas, y a recorrer con ellos, agarrando bien sus manos, la vía de la Cruz, sabiendo que todo sepulcro –precisamente como el de la Basílica de la Anástasis, o del Santo Sepulcro, de la Ciudad Santa– no es, ni lo será nunca en ningún tiempo, la última palabra sobre la vida del hombre. La presencia preciosa de los Frailes de la Custodia de Tierra Santa no solo garantiza el mantenimiento de los santuarios, sino que también custodia la vida de las comunidades cristianas, frecuentemente sometidas a la tentación de perder su vocación de ser pueblo de la Pascua en las tierras benditas por la presencia del Redentor.
Muchas casas de los Religiosos y Religiosas Franciscanos y de otras Órdenes y Congregaciones religiosas, en Siria como en Turquía, en estas semanas se han convertido en tiendas y refugio para los que han perdido sus casas, pero, más en general, siguen siendo, en toda la Tierra Santa, como manantiales de esperanza a través del cuidado de los más pequeños, la formación escolar, el acompañamiento de las madres que se encuentran en dificultad, el servicio humilde a los ancianos y enfermos; y además ofrecen un hogar y un futuro para las nuevas familias por medio de planes de construcción de viviendas y de la creación de puestos de trabajo, de manera que valga la pena continuar permaneciendo en los Lugares de la Salvación.
La Iglesia universal y toda la humanidad se han mostrado una vez más diligentes en el auxilio prestado durante la emergencia vinculada a una catástrofe natural, pero el Santo Padre Francisco, en el camino de lo afirmado por sus predecesores, encarga también este año al Dicasterio para las Iglesias Orientales para que invite ardientemente a seguir siendo solidarios con la comunidad cristiana de la Tierra Santa, como ya hizo el Apóstol de las Gentes, san Pablo, con la colecta que promovió para la iglesia de Jerusalén. El gesto material de la oferta al que nos llama el Papa, sea ante todo acompañado por unas palabras que hagan redescubrir el sentido de mantener viva la memoria de los orígenes, como expresa el profeta Isaías: «Considerad la roca de que habéis sido tallados» (Is 51,1). La Iglesia se ha difundido en el mundo con la predicación de los apóstoles, y cada uno de nosotros se ha convertido en la piedra llamada a permanecer unida al fundamento, que es Cristo Señor, para poder construir un edificio espiritual: en Jerusalén están nuestros orígenes y nosotros queremos permanecer unidos y solidarios con los hermanos y las hermanas que allí continúan dando testimonio del Evangelio. Custodiemos la memoria histórica del Cenáculo haciendo que nuestras casas y nuestras parroquias sean cenáculos de oración y caridad. Reforcemos los espacios de la Basílica del Santo Sepulcro y hagamos que resplandezcan de nuevo con toda su luz, pero hagamos también que en nuestros corazones habite el anuncio del Resucitado. Mantengamos la Basílica de la Anunciación de Nazaret, pero dejemos que nuestras vidas se llenen de gozo cada día ante la Palabra del Señor, como hizo María. Unámonos a los ángeles en fiesta de la Basílica de la Natividad de Belén, pero hagámonos cargo del cuidado de cuantos nacen y quedan en los márgenes de nuestra sociedad, como fue así para el Santo Niño en la Gruta, rodeado solamente por los pastores.
Os pido con el corazón que la Colecta del Viernes Santo sea pues generosa por parte de todos, como compuesta por tantos pequeños óbolos de la viuda alabada por Jesús en el Evangelio.
En nombre del Santo Padre Francisco doy las gracias a los Obispos, a los párrocos, a todas las comunidades religiosas y parroquiales, como también a los Comisarios de Tierra Santa que por todas partes en el mundo ayudan a la realización de esta peregrinación anual a las fuentes de la existencia cristiana. Gracias, sobre todo, en nombre de los que volverán así a una vida más digna, gracias por vuestra bondad.

Caro irmão no episcopado,
Na sexta-feira Santa ouvimos o ressoar do relato da Paixão do Senhor. Entre os sinais que acompanham a morte de Jesus, é referido que o «véu do templo se rasgou, a terra tremeu e as rochas se abriram» (Mt. 26,51-52). Precisamente enquanto a humanidade se estava despertando lentamente das consequências da pandemia, assistimos há poucas semanas atrás, às profundas perturbações provocadas pelo terrível terramoto. Este foi sentido também em Jerusalém, mas provocou danos e semeou um número altíssimo de mortos na Síria e no sul da Turquia, terras visitadas pela pregação apostólica e lugares onde floresceu o cristianismo das origens com insignes tradições monásticas e eremíticas, ou escolas teológicas que contribuíram pelo desenvolvimento da compreensão do mistério de Cristo de que todos nós somos devedores, mesmo se frequentemente não o conhecemos por causa das perseguições que lhe moveram.
Ao drama da guerra, que durou por mais de doze anos na Síria, acrescentou-se a devastação provocada pelos edifícios que caíram por causa das ondas sísmicas: tantos irmãos e irmãs nossos na fé e na humanidade enfrentaram um novo êxodo das suas casa, desta vez não por causa do risco das bombas ou pelo que tinha significado a invasão da planície do Nínive no Iraque, mas porque também a casa, lugar dos afectos mais queridos, o refúgio da própria família, vacilou se arriscando de se tornar e frequentemente se transformando de facto, numa tomba de morte.
As devastações da guerra e o terramoto ainda mais uma vez meteram a nu a fragilidade das rochas a quem a humanidade confia a própria esperança e a própria segurança e nos fazem sentir mais forte o desejo de procurar a Rocha da fidelidade de Deus na Páscoa de Cristo, morto e ressuscitado. Vimos a sua imagem profanada há algumas atrás por actos vandálicos junto da igreja da Flagelação, ao longo da Via Dolorosa em Jerusalém. Naquele Crucifixo mutilado somos convidados a reconhecer a dor de tantos dos nossos irmãos e irmãs que viram igualmente destroçados os corpos dos seus entes queridos sob as ruínas ou atingidos pelas bombas e a percorrer com eles, mãos nas mãos, a estrada da Cruz, sabendo que cada sepulcro, como o da Basílica da Anástases, na Cidade Santa, não é a última palavra sobre a vida do homem de cada tempo. A presença preciosa dos Irmãos da Custódia da Terra Santa não garante apenas a manutenção dos santuários, mas custodia a vida das comunidades cristãs, frequentemente tentadas a desanimar na sua vocação de ser o povo da Páscoa nas terras abençoadas pela presença do Redentor.
Muitas casas dos Religiosos e Religiosas Franciscanas e de outras Ordens e Congregações, na Síria como na Turquia, nestas semanas se tornaram tendas e protecção para os desalojados, mas em geral em toda a Terra Santa permanecem fontes de esperança através do cuidado dos mais pequenos, da formação académica, do acompanhamento das mães em dificuldade, do inclinar-se sobre os anciãos e os doentes, além da oferta através de projectos, de alojamento para as novas famílias e criação de postos de trabalho, para que valha a pena continuar a permanecer nos Lugares da Salvação.
A Igreja universal e toda a humanidade se mostraram mais uma vez atentas a socorrer a emergência ligada a uma catástrofe natural, mas o Santo Padre Francisco, no sulco de quanto sempre afirmado pelos seus Predecessores, também este ano encarrega o Dicastério para as Igrejas Orientais a reavivar o convite para permanecer solidário com a comunidade cristã da Terra Santa, como já fez o Apóstolo das Gentes, São Paulo, com a coleta organizada para a igreja de Jerusalém. O gesto material da oferta, que ele nos recorda, seja acompanhado antes de mais por uma palavra que faça descobrir o sentido de manter viva a memória das origens, como exorta o profeta Isaías: «considerai a rocha de que fostes talhados» (Is 51,1). A Igreja se difundiu no mundo com a pregação dos apóstolos e cada um de nós com o Baptismo se tornou a pedra chamada a permanecer unida ao fundamento, que é Cristo Senhor, para poder construir um edifício espiritual: em Jerusalém estão as nossas fontes, e nós queremos continuar unidos e solidários com os irmãos e as irmãs que ali continuam a testemunhar o Evangelho. Protegemos a memória histórica do Cenáculo, tornando cenáculos de oração e de caridade as nossas casas e as nossas paróquias. Reforçamos os espaços da Basílica do Santo Sepulcro e reconduzimo-los à sua luz, mas façamos habitar os nossos corações pelo anúncio do Ressuscitado. Mantenhamos a Basílica da Anunciação em Nazaré, mas deixemo-nos desconjuntar as nossas vidas todos os dias pela Palavra do Senhor como o fez a Virgem Maria. Unamo-nos aos anjos festivos dos mosaicos da Basílica da Natividade em Belém, mas cuidemos de quantos nascem e permanecem nas margens da sociedade, como aconteceu com o Santo Menino na Gruta rodeado apenas pelos pastores.
Peço-vos com o coração que a Coleta da Sexta-feira Santa seja portanto generosa da parte de todos, como tantos pequenos óbolos da viúva louvada por Jesus no Evangelho.
Em nome do Santo Padre Francisco agradeço os Bispos, os párocos, todas as comunidades religiosas e paroquiais, como também os Comissários da Terra Santa que por todo o lado no mundo ajudam à realização desta peregrinação anual às fontes da existência cristã. Obrigado, sobretudo em nome daqueles que tornarão a uma vida mais digna, graças à vossa bondade.

Introduzione
La “Colletta per la Terra Santa” nasce dalla volontà dei Pontefici di mantenere forte il legame tra tutti i Cristiani del mondo e i Luoghi Santi. È la fonte principale per il sostentamento della vita che si svolge intorno ai Luoghi Santi e lo strumento che la Chiesa si è data per mettersi a fianco delle comunità ecclesiali del Medio Oriente. Nei tempi più recenti, Papa Paolo VI, attraverso l’Esortazione Apostolica ‘Nobis in Animo’ (25 marzo 1974), diede una spinta decisiva in favore della Terra Santa, da Lui visitata nello storico pellegrinaggio del 1964.
La Custodia Francescana attraverso la Colletta può sostenere e portare avanti l’importante missione a cui è chiamata: custodire i Luoghi Santi, le pietre della memoria, e favorire la presenza cristiana, le pietre vive di Terra Santa, attraverso tante attività di solidarietà, come ad esempio il mantenimento delle strutture pastorali, educative, assistenziali, sanitarie e sociali.
I territori che beneficiano sotto diverse forme di un sostegno proveniente dalla Colletta sono i seguenti: Gerusalemme, Palestina, Israele, Giordania, Cipro, Siria, Libano, Egitto, Etiopia, Eritrea, Turchia, Iran e Iraq.
Di norma, la Custodia di Terra Santa riceve il 65% della Colletta, mentre il restante 35% va al Dicastero per le Chiese Orientali, che lo utilizza per la formazione dei candidati al sacerdozio, il sostentamento del clero, l’attività scolastica, la formazione culturale e i sussidi alle diverse circoscrizioni ecclesiastiche in Medio Oriente.

Formazione Accademica, Spirituale e Umana dei Seminaristi e Sacerdoti delle Chiese poste sotto la giurisdizione della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali
Grazie alla Colletta si può provvedere a devolvere contributi ai seminari, alle case di formazione religiosa e istituzioni culturali nei territori di competenza, sostenendo sotto varie forme (borse di studio, tasse universitarie e ogni altra necessità sanitaria) anche a Roma, giovani seminaristi e sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose e, compatibilmente con i fondi disponibili, alcuni laici. Il collegio aperto cinque anni fa per ospitare le religiose che provengono da diversi paesi orientali, accoglie quest’anno 27 consacrate, su un totale di 252 studenti, che beneficiano della borsa di studio, ospiti in tutti e 7 collegi di competenza del Dicastero.
Non va dimenticato il contributo al sostentamento del Pontificio Istituto Orientale, istituzione accademica superiore con due facoltà, Scienze Ecclesiastiche Orientali e Diritto Canonico Orientale, di cui è Gran Cancelliere il Prefetto, come pure il sostegno al Comitato per la Collaborazione Culturale che sviluppa la sua attività in ambito ecumenico.

Sussidi per l’attività Scolastica
La Diocesi Patriarcale di Gerusalemme dei Latini, la Custodia Francescana, oltre alle altre Chiese e gli Istituti Religiosi sono impegnati per la formazione scolastica dei giovani della Terra Santa, ed insieme al Segretariato di Solidarietà sono sostenuti dai proventi della Colletta.
Una tra le prestigiose fondazioni che assicura la formazione accademica è la Bethlehem University. Quasi 3300 giovani, musulmani e cristiani, vengono formati intellettualmente e umanamente con la speranza di impegnarsi nella costruzione di un Paese dove regni rispetto reciproco e dove sia preservata la dignità umana. È apprezzabile l’impegno dei Fratelli de La Salle nella conduzione dell’Università.

Il Dicastero sostiene le Chiese poste sotto la sua competenza, con sussidi ordinari e straordinari, attinti dalla Colletta Terra Santa: essi contribuiscono alla vita quotidiana di tutte le Circoscrizioni.
Dopo 10 anni di guerra, il recente terremoto ha colpito duramente le regioni nord-occidentali della Siria, con edifici crollati ad Aleppo, Lattakia ed Idlib, come anche le regioni meridionale e centrale della Turchia, causando la morte di migliaia di persone. Il viaggio intrapreso dal Prefetto in Siria e Turchia una settimana dopo l’accaduto è stata una occasione per dimostrare la vicinanza, affetto e preoccupazione del Santo Padre alle popolazioni colpite dalla calamità naturale in entrambi i Paesi, rafforzare i vescovi, i sacerdoti, operatori caritativi nonché per pianificare una prospettiva per il lavoro futuro di ristrutturazione e ricostruzione delle case, scuole, chiese e altre strutture danneggiate o distrutte nel terremoto insieme alle Agenzie della ROACO.
La guerra e ora il terremoto hanno lasciato persone che non hanno cibo, altre che non hanno cure mediche, ragazzi e giovani che non hanno scuola, e poi gli orfani, i feriti e le vedove senza nessuno ad accudirli. Da un lato è necessario assicurare i mezzi necessari per una vita dignitosa a chi rientra in Iraq e Siria e a chi è rifugiato nei paesi limitrofi, come Libano e Giordania. Dall’altro lato si deve provvedere anche a favorire l’attività culturale, spirituale e psicologica che in qualche modo fanno avvicinare le persone, nonostante le differenze religiose ed etniche. Per provvedere a tutto questo è ovviamente necessaria la collaborazione di tutte le persone di buona volontà.

DICASTERY FOR THE EASTERN CHURCHES
2022 A.D.
Introduction
The Collection “Pro Terra Sancta” was born out of the desire of the Popes to maintain a strong bond between the faithful across the world and the Holy Places. It is the main source of material support for Christian life in the Holy Land and a tool for the universal Church to express solidarity with the ecclesial communities of the Middle East. In recent times, Saint Paul VI gave a significant boost to supporting the Holy Land with the Apostolic Exhortation ‘Nobis in Animo’ (March 25, 1974).
Through the funds traditionally collected on Good Friday, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land is able to carry out the important mission to which it is called: preserving the Sacred Places, the stones of memory, and promoting the Christian presence, the living stones, through its many pastoral, educational, welfare, health and social facilities.
The territories which benefit from the Collection are Jerusalem, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Turkey, Iran and Iraq.
As a rule, the Custody of the Holy Land receives 65% of the Collection, while the remaining 35% goes to the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, which is used for the formation of candidates to priesthood, the support of clergy, educational activities, cultural formation and for subsidies to the several ecclesiastical Circumscriptions in the Middle East.
This report is a synthesis of what the Dicastery received in 2022 and how it was distributed.

Academic, Spiritual and Human Formation of the Seminarians and Priests of the Churches under the Jurisdiction of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches
Thanks to the Collection, contributions can be made to seminaries, religious houses of formation and cultural institutions in the relevant territories and even in Rome, supporting in various forms (scholarships, university fees and health care) young seminarians and priests, men and women religious and, depending on the funds available, some lay people. The college, which was opened five years ago to host nuns who come from various Eastern countries, this year welcomes 27 consecrated women, out of a total of 252 students, who benefit from the scholarship, and are hosted in all 7 colleges under the jurisdiction of the Dicastery.
In addition, the Dicastery contributes to the support of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, a higher academic institution with two faculties, Eastern Ecclesiastical Sciences and Eastern Canon Law, of which the Cardinal Prefect is the Grand Chancellor, as well as to supporting the Committee for Cultural Collaboration which develops its activity in the ecumenical field.

Subsidies for Educational Activities
The Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custody, the Eastern Churches of the Holy Land and Religious Institutes are committed to the education of young people in the Holy Land.
One of the prestigious foundations that ensures academic formation is Bethlehem University. Almost 3,300 young people, mostly Palestinian Muslims, are trained intellectually and humanly in the hope they will engage in building a country where mutual respect reigns and where human dignity is preserved. The commitment of the De La Salle Brothers in running the university is very appreciated.

The Dicastery contributes to supporting the Churches under its jurisdiction with subsidies drawn from the Holy Land Collection: they contribute to the daily life of all the Circumscriptions.
After 10 years of war, a devastating earthquake has recently hit northwestern Syria with buildings falling apart in Aleppo, Lattakia and Idlib, as well as southern and central Turkey, and killing thousands. The visit of the Prefect to Syria and Turkey made a week after the disaster was an opportunity to show the closeness, affection and concern of the Holy Father to the people affected in both countries, to give strength to the bishops, priests, charitable workers, and also to outline plans for future renovation and reconstruction work of the houses, schools, churches and other structures damaged or destroyed by the earthquake together with the ROACO Agencies.
The war and now the earthquake have left many people with no food, others with no medical treatment, children and youths without schools, and also orphans, wounded and widows with no one to look after them. On the one hand, there is the need to ensure the necessary means for a dignified life to those returning to Iraq and Syria, and to those who have taken refuge in neighboring countries, such as Lebanon and Jordan. On the other hand, attention must be also paid to cultural, spiritual and psychological activities which in some way bring people together despite religious and ethnic differences. To provide for all this, the collaboration of all people of good will is clearly necessary.

Rapporto sommario 2021/2022
La Custodia di Terra Santa da secoli si impegna nella conservazione e la rivitalizzazione dei luoghi santi del cristianesimo nella Terra di Gesù e in tutto il Medio Oriente. Tra i vari obiettivi della missione francescana, si ricordano il sostegno e lo sviluppo della minoranza cristiana che vi abita, la conservazione e valorizzazione di aree archeologiche e santuari, l’intervento nei casi di emergenza, la liturgia nei luoghi di culto, le opere apostoliche e l’assistenza ai pellegrini. Anche per il biennio 2021/2022, la presenza francescana in Terra Santa, si è manifestata attraverso la progettazione, programmazione e l’esecuzione dei seguenti progetti e opere:

Le opere elencate sono state realizzate grazie a vari tipi di contributi economici, in primo luogo la Colletta del Venerdì Santo, poi le attività di fund raising della Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) e associazione Pro Terra Sancta (PTS), ma anche di altri donatori privati e istituzionali, così come dagli introiti delle attività svolte.
Grazie a Dio, al momento in cui questa relazione viene redatta (gennaio 2023), qui a Gerusalemme come nel resto del mondo, il Covid-19 ha molto ridotto il suo potenziale distruttivo e i suoi effetti non impediscono più la circolazione delle persone. Questo sta consentendo una progressiva ripresa dell’afflusso dei pellegrini, con un certo sollievo economico per le famiglie dei cristiani e anche per la Custodia. Così possiamo continuare la missione che ci è stata affidata sapendo che la Divina Provvidenza, che qui ci ha voluti, non cessa di prendersi cura di noi.
Opere rivolte ai pellegrini
Acri: edificio “Scuola materna”
● In corso la progettazione degli interventi di ristrutturazione dell’edificio “Scuola materna”, in previsione di rendere nuovamente abitabile l’appartamento in cui risiedevano le suore che gestivano l’opera.
Ain Karem: santuario della nascita di San Giovanni
● Completati i lavori di rifacimento della copertura della chiesa di San Giovanni Battista che comprendono il consolidamento delle volte in pietra.
● Completati i lavori di manutenzione delle altre coperture del convento per risolvere problemi di infiltrazione di umidità.
● Completati i lavori di restauro della sacrestia e dei locali adiacenti che soffrivano di seri problemi di umidità.
● Completati i lavori di realizzazione di uno scannafosso drenante all’esterno a ridosso del muro dell’edificio, a protezione della parte interrata.
● Completati i lavori di manutenzione della facciata sul lato del convento delle suore per risolvere problemi di infiltrazione di umidità.
● Completati i lavori di manutenzione interna del convento delle suore dovuti ai problemi di infiltrazione di acqua dalle coperture e dalla facciata.
● In fase di progettazione i lavori di restauro della chiesa ove previsti scavi archeologici.
● In fase di realizzazione la messa in sicurezza dell’impianto elettrico dell’intero complesso che comprende convento, chiesa, seminario e accoglienza dei pellegrini.
Ain Karem: santuario di San Giovanni nel Deserto
● In corso di realizzazione gli interventi più urgenti per la conservazione del santuario, sulla base di un masterplan che comprende la regimentazione delle acque meteoriche nell’area circostante al convento.
Beit Sahour: Campo dei Pastori
● È stato definito un masterplan di interventi per la conservazione e lo sviluppo del sito, un ampio intervento che comprende nuove cappelle esterne per le celebrazioni, la riqualificazione della grotta dei pastori, nuovi servizi igienici e infrastrutture.
● In fase di completamento i lavori per la realizzazione di un nuovo “Pilgrims Center”, comprendente nuovi servizi igienici e alcuni locali accessori con un piccolo souvenir shop, uno spazio di ristoro e una sala multifunzionale per piccole conferenze.
● In fase di realizzazione i lavori per la realizzazione tre delle cinque nuove cappelle esterne per le celebrazioni dei pellegrini. Sono stati completati i lavori strutturali e sono in corso i lavori relativi ad impianti e finiture.
● In corso di elaborazione anche un progetto di sistemazione della zona archeologica e una nuova campagna di scavi in collaborazione tra il PIAC e lo SBF.
Betania: santuario di Casa di Marta, Maria e Lazzaro
● In fase di completamento il restauro e valorizzazione dei resti bizantini e medievali del convento di Betania attraverso: recupero delle aree degradate;
● continuano la formazione al restauro e impiego di 10 giovani palestinesi; sostegno alle attività imprenditoriali della locale associazione femminile; progetto didattico con le scuole primarie per la conoscenza dei siti religiosi e archeologici locali (sostenuto da PTS).
Betlemme: convento di Santa Caterina
● Completamento del progetto pilota che prevede l’installazione dei pannelli solari fotovoltaici sul tetto del convento per ridurre i costi energetici della Parrocchia e del Convento e per incoraggiare la popolazione locale a valorizzare il ricorso a energie rinnovabili.
● Completata la prima fase dei lavori per la soluzione dei problemi di umidità di cui soffre il convento delle suore, rinnovando le infrastrutture principali di distribuzione dell’acqua.
● In procinto di iniziare la seconda fase dei lavori per sostituire le tubazioni che raccolgono e convogliano l’acqua piovana verso le cisterne antiche presenti nel sottosuolo del convento.
Betlemme: casa del fanciullo
● Rifacimento della dispensa, della cucina e della lavanderia per adeguarle alla normativa igienica e di sicurezza.
● Completamento dell’area giochi per i bambini con rifacimento del manto sintetico, allestimento dell’area attrezzata e messa in sicurezza delle strutture esterne.
Cafarnao: santuario della Promessa eucaristica
● Installati i nuovi cartelli esplicativi e di segnaletica del santuario.
● Ampliamento del Pilgrim Center.
Emmaus Qubeibeh: santuario dei santi Simeone e Cleopa
● Completati i lavori di manutenzione dei pluviali della chiesa che causavano importanti infiltrazioni di acqua.
● Completati i lavori per il consolidamento delle strutture delle coperture lignee della chiesa.
● In corso di progettazione altri interventi di manutenzione straordinaria per la conservazione delle strutture della chiesa, del convento e dell’ex-seminario.
● In corso di elaborazione il progetto per dotare la struttura di un vano ascensore per disabili.
Gerico: sito del Battesimo sul fiume Giordano
● In corso gli interventi di conservazione della proprietà a seguito del recente sminamento e della restituzione dell’area del santuario del Battesimo di Gesù.
● Completata una prima fase di lavori per la pulizia e la sistemazione preliminare del sito, con interventi di messa in sicurezza e di protezione dalle infiltrazioni di acqua dell’edificio centrale e interventi sull’area circostante per il drenaggio delle acque meteoriche il livellamento del terreno lasciato in pessimo stato dopo gli interventi di sminamento.
● Realizzazione un master plan di interventi per la valorizzazione e lo sviluppo del sito per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini.
● In fase di progettazioni la prima fase degli interventi previsti nel masterplan, con realizzazione dei servizi igienici per i pellegrini e sistemazione dei locali sotto la chiesa per ospitare una cappella per le celebrazioni.
Gerusalemme: basilica del Getsemani
● Terminati gli scavi archeologici che hanno messo in luce un bagno rituale del I secolo, una chiesetta bizantina del V secolo con iscrizione lapidea, il perimetro del monastero-ospizio medievale e vari reperti lapidei.
● In corso le rifiniture del tunnel e ascensori per i gruppi di pellegrini per collegare tramite percorso pedonale l’area della basilica e la Valle del Cedron.
● In fase avanzata i lavori per la realizzazione del centro servizi per i pellegrini nella Valle del Cedron.
● In procinto di iniziare i lavori per il nuovo sistema di illuminazione dell’esterno della basilica, promosso dalla Municipalità di Gerusalemme.
● In corso di progettazione le 3 cappelle esterne per le celebrazioni nel “Giardino degli apostoli” del convento dell’Agonia.
Gerusalemme: basilica del Santo Sepolcro di nostro Signore
● In corso i lavori di restauro del pavimento della Basilica e delle relative infrastrutture, in accordo con Greci e Armeni ed in collaborazione con l’Università La Sapienza (Roma) e il Centro di Restauri di Venaria (TO).
● In fase avanzata la ristrutturazione completa del secondo piano del convento per risanare le camere e dotarle di servizi igienici. In corso anche la realizzazione di un ulteriore piano per aumentare il numero di celle disponibili.
● In procinto di iniziare i lavori di restauro della cappella crociata, adeguando l’illuminazione e la ventilazione dei locali e risolvendo i problemi di infiltrazione di acqua di cui soffre.
● In fase di progettazione gli interventi di ristrutturazione del piano primo del convento (cucina, refettorio e altre camere da letto).
● In fase di realizzazione gli interventi di messa in sicurezza dell’impianto elettrico del convento, delle cappelle e della sacrestia.
Gerusalemme: centro parrocchiale
● Completati i primi interventi di razionalizzazione degli spazi del centro parrocchiale.
● In corso di progettazione interventi più consistenti relativi alla dotazione di impianti e servizi adeguati.
Gerusalemme: Christian Information Center
● Completati i lavori per realizzazione di cinque sale didattiche multimediali per i pellegrini dedicata alla conoscenza del Santo Sepolcro.
Gerusalemme: Christian Media Center
● Completati i lavori per l’adeguamento della sala utilizzata come studio di registrazione dei programmi.
Gerusalemme: convento di San Salvatore
Infermeria
● Completati i lavori di manutenzione interna delle stanze dell’infermeria con sostituzione dell’impianto di climatizzazione ed imbiancatura degli ambienti.
Uffici
● Completata la ristrutturazione dei locali per lo spostamento del Souvenir Shop in vista della realizzazione della sezione storica del Museo di Terra Santa.
● Completata la ristrutturazione degli ex-uffici della comunicazione, per ricollocare altri servizi della Custodia quali l’ufficio del cerimoniere, l’ufficio del calendarista, ecc.
Convento
● Installati i nuovi cartelli di segnaletica del convento.
● Completati i lavori di ristrutturazione della sala capitolare.
● Completati i lavori di ampliamento della foresteria dei frati con la ristrutturazione dei locali adiacenti e realizzazione di 5 nuove stanze.
● Completati i lavori di ristrutturazione/manutenzione delle stanze dei frati.
● In corso di studio l’aggiornamento del sistema di riscaldamento e di acqua calda sanitaria per ridurre i costi.
Gerusalemme: Maria Bambina, casa di accoglienza per pellegrini
● In corso i lavori di manutenzione delle stanze, in attesa di lavori più consistenti previsti nel master plan di interventi che è stato definito per il miglioramento dell’accoglienza dei pellegrini.
Gerusalemme: santuario del Dominus Flevit
● In corso di elaborazione un master plan degli interventi per il miglioramento dell’accoglienza di pellegrini e visitatori nel santuario.
Gerusalemme: Terra Santa Museum
● In corso di realizzazione un moderno centro museale per la valorizzazione del patrimonio artistico, archeologico e culturale francescano. Nell’area di circa 2500 m2 saranno compresi:
- Museo archeologico: I luoghi della Bibbia in Palestina (Convento della Flagellazione) (Terza fase)
- Museo storico: La Custodia Francescana di Terra Santa (Convento San Salvatore)
● Completati gli interventi di consolidamento strutturale e di finitura/impianti dei locali che completeranno l’area museale presso il santuario della Flagellazione. In fase di realizzazione gli allestimenti interni.
● In corso i lavori di consolidamento strutturale dell’area museale presso il convento di San Salvatore.
● In fase di completamento la progettazione di impianti, finiture e allestimenti dell’area museale presso il convento di San Salvatore
Gerusalemme: Dar al Consul
● Completata la ristrutturazione del complesso di Dar al Consul nella Città Vecchia, recuperando il piano terra in disuso di circa 1200m2 con valorizzazione dei ritrovamenti archeologici e predisposizione di ambienti per i pellegrini e per attività culturali a livello locale.
Gerusalemme: convento della Flagellazione
● Completati i lavori per una prima messa in sicurezza strutturale del secondo piano della parte più recente del convento.
● Completati i lavori per il miglioramento del decoro e l’ampliamento dello spazio del cortile disponibile per i pellegrini.
● Completati i lavori per la realizzazione di nuovi servizi igienici per i pellegrini.
● Completati i lavori per la ristrutturazione dei servizi igienici della sacrestia.
● In fase di progettazione i lavori per l’adozione di un nuovo sistema di acqua calda sanitaria.
Monte Tabor: basilica della Trasfigurazione
● Completati gli interventi di consolidamento strutturale e restauro delle torri campanarie.
● In corso i lavori per la ristrutturazione di una parte della Casa Nova, prevista la realizzazione di un conventino per accogliere le suore che collaboreranno nell’accoglienza dei pellegrini.
● In corso lo studio per il recupero del resto dell’edificio del Casanova, per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini.
Naim: santuario della risurrezione della figlia della vedova
● Completati i lavori per la riapertura del sito con la realizzazione di una struttura prefabbricata a uso sacrestia e per la presenza di un custode. In corso di realizzazione gli interventi per la sistemazione della parte del sito attorno alla chiesa.
Nazareth: basilica dell’Annunciazione a Maria Santissima
● Completati i lavori di ristrutturazione di un intero piano del convento con adeguamento dell’impianto elettrico, di climatizzazione e di acqua calda sanitaria, con adozione di sistemi a basso consumo. Realizzate le predisposizioni impiantistiche per la futura ristrutturazione degli altri piani del convento.
NB: Nella realizzazione delle opere, pur comportando un fattore di complicazione per via dei permessi da richiedere e durante i vari lockdown, è stato privilegiato l’impiego di manodopera proveniente dalla West Bank per dare lavoro a cristiani di un territorio che non beneficia né di welfare né di ammortizzatori sociali e che in questi ultimi due anni sarebbero rimasti totalmente privi di risorse economiche.
Opere rivolte a favore della comunità locale
● Betlemme: Casa del fanciullo; casa per 30 bambini di famiglie in difficoltà sociale, 20 interni (h 24) e 10 in accoglienza diurna.
● Finanziamento di 509 borse di studio universitario (284 dall’Economato custodiale e 225 attraverso la FFHL) per la durata di 4 anni, distribuite nelle diverse università (Betlemme, Università ebraica, Bir Zeit, Amman).
● Ausili per la messa in sicurezza delle attività di 10 piccole attività artigiane.
● A Betlemme e a Gerusalemme sono stati inviati in più occasioni aiuti economici supplementari per venire incontro ai costi sanitari delle famiglie e per generi di prima necessità, attraverso le parrocchie, durante la pandemia.
Scuole:
Amman:
● Durante il 2021 non ci sono stati grossi lavori a causa del covid. L'accento era sull'insegnamento a distanza e sul seguire bene gli studenti. Tuttavia, è stata completata la ristrutturazione del centro vocazionale (ex seminario minore) trasformandolo in casa di accoglienza multifunzionale per ritiri spirituali e attività giovanili, numero dei posti letto 20, due sale per conferenze ben attrezzate, ascensore, ingrandimento della cappella, nuovo arredamento.
● Nel 2022 è iniziato un lavoro di copertura di una parte del piazzale e di sistemazione delle infrastrutture per le attività sportive del Collegio.
Betlemme:
● Sistemazione dell’aula polivalente Millennium.
Cana:
● Completati i lavori per la costruzione di una nuova scuola. Il complesso comprende anche il centro parrocchiale e un parcheggio coperto per un’area di 5.000m2.
Gerusalemme - Saint Joseph School (Giaffa Gate):
● Completati i lavori di manutenzione di alcune aule della scuola e degli spazi di servizio.
Gerusalemme - Terra Sancta School (Damascus Gate):
● In corso di completamento i lavori per la realizzazione di nuovi locali per strutture sportive al di sotto dell’ampio cortile della scuola, che ospiteranno una piscina, una palestra e campi da gioco sulla copertura dell’edificio. Questi locali saranno anche ad uso dei giovani della Città Vecchia.
Gerusalemme - Scuola Hellen Keller – Beth Hanina:
● Completata la ristrutturazione della scuola elementare dopo l’apertura della scuola materna (attualmente 400 alunni in totale).
Gerusalemme - Scuola Hellen Keller (scuola per ipovedenti):
● Completata la ristrutturazione della scuola.
Giaffa – Elementary School:
● Completati i lavori di consolidamento strutturale di una porzione di edificio che accoglie 6 aule della scuola elementare, ripristinando le condizioni di sicurezza necessarie per l’uso dei locali. Sono stati al contempo rinnovati gli impianti e le finiture.
Gerico:
● Risistemazione della biblioteca della scuola
● Acquisizione di tre maxischermi con accesso a internet per il kindergarten
● Acquisizione di 4 lavagne luminose per il kindergarten
● Realizzazione di un affresco attorno ai muri del kindergarten
● Realizzazione di un parcheggio per le biciclette
Appartamenti per i bisognosi e le giovani coppie
Gerusalemme:
● Città Vecchia. Continua il lavoro di ristrutturazione delle case della Città Vecchia con lo scopo di migliorare le condizioni di vita dei residenti:
o ristrutturazione completa di 8 abitazioni;
o ristrutturazione parziale di 6 abitazioni;
o manutenzione straordinaria degli esterni (facciate, coperture, ecc.) di 7 abitazioni.
o manutenzione ordinaria o interventi d’urgenza in numerose abitazioni.
● Dar el Kbire: in corso la procedura per l’ottenimento dei permessi per l’ampliamento dell’edificio di 300-400m2 e la progettazione dell’intervento migliorativo sulle 19 abitazioni esistenti e degli esterni (facciate, coperture, ecc.). L’area totale interessata dal progetto è di circa 2500m2.
● Tumian Palace: in corso la procedura per l’ottenimento dei permessi per l’ampliamento dell’edificio con la realizzazione di 3 piani aggiuntivi e 800m2 ad uso residenziale e religioso.
● Abu Geries: in corso la procedura per l’ottenimento dei permessi per l’ampliamento dell’edificio con la realizzazione di 750m2 destinati a uffici, ristorazione e negozi.
● Pisgat Zeev housing project: in corso la procedura per l’ottenimento dei permessi per la costruzione del nuovo complesso residenziale con 70-80 unità abitative e 300m2 per uso commerciale.
Nazareth:
● Karm el Sacheb housing Project: concluse la fase di progettazione e la procedura per l’ottenimento dei permessi per la realizzazione di un complesso residenziale, devono essere avviati i lavori di realizzazione del progetto.
Altre opere culturali:
● Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Ogni anno la Custodia di Terra Santa sostiene economicamente la Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme.
● Formazione di 62 studenti in scienze bibliche presso lo Studium Biblicum Franciscanum provenienti da varie parte del mondo e da province religiose e diocesi povere, ai quali la Custodia garantisce vitto e alloggio e una borsa di studio. Essi saranno destinati all’insegnamento della Sacra Scrittura in vari paesi del mondo.
● Christian Media Center. I servizi offerti comprendono: Website, completamente rinnovato, semplificato nell’uso ed ora mobile friendly; Terra Santa News notiziario settimanale che racconta fede, storia, attualità della Terra Santa; trasmesso da circa 35 emittenti nel mondo in 10 lingue (da quest’anno anche in cinese); documentari su temi sociali e religiosi, in diverse lingue; diretta di celebrazioni liturgiche ed eventi.
● Istituto di Musica Magnificat. Affiliato al Conservatorio di Vicenza il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale e internazionale. Accoglie più di 220 studenti cristiani, musulmani ed ebrei, guidati da circa 30 professori anche essi ebrei, cristiani e musulmani.
● Accoglienza nel Seminario Francescano Internazionale di San Salvatore a Gerusalemme e nel Seminario di Ain Karem e formazione teologica presso lo Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum di 31 giovani provenienti dalle varie Province dell’Ordine dei Frati Minori.
● Formazione di 60 giovani in formazione nella Custodia (dall’aspirandato agli studi specialistici).
Rodi
● Distribuzione di cibo, cure mediche e dentistiche per i rifugiati in transito nei centri di accoglienza su Rodi e Kos.
● Rodi: distribuzione settimanale fino a 700 pacchi alimentari e generi di prima necessità per l'igiene ai locali bisognosi e ai rifugiati.
● Ristrutturazione del Centro Pastorale della parrocchia di Kos a seguito del terremoto del 2017.
● A causa della crisi economica in Grecia dal 2008 ad oggi, la Custodia:
o aiuta con il supporto psicologico per malati di cancro;
o offre lezioni gratuite di inglese, greco e italiano alla popolazione locale e ai rifugiati;
o offre borse di studio per i giovani della parrocchia e per bambini con difficoltà di apprendimento.
Siria e Libano:
Opere sostenute da Pro Terra Sancta (PTS)
Siria
Aleppo
· 1) Centro di assistenza Pro Terra Sancta – Azizieh – Emergenza generale
Descrizione Progetto e attività: il social/emergency center attivato si occupa della distribuzione di cibo, assistenza medica, vouchers per acquistare gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini. 25 sono i volontari, per lo più giovani, 15 le persone che compongono lo staff più o meno permanente del centro. I beneficiari vengono individuati seguendo i seguenti criteri: situazione finanziaria e numero di componenti della famiglia; numero di bambini presenti nella famiglia e numero di anziani; vedove con bambini a carico o mariti in guerra. Nel corso del 2021-2022 è stata attivata una cucina, con ca. 20 tra staff, cuochi e volontari coinvolti, per preparare e offrire pasti caldi, venendo incontro all’aumento vertiginoso dei prezzi e alla mancanza pressoché totale dell’elettricità per permettere di cucinare nelle case.
Beneficiari raggiunti 2021-2022
3.000 famiglie ricevono pacchi di cibo e non-food items, elettricità e acqua (incluse 500 famiglie con bambini neonati/piccoli + 100 bambini disabili musulmani).
1.200 persone al giorno ricevono un pasto caldo, preparato e distribuito presso la cucina sociale francescana del centro.
4.500 persone aiutate con medicine e assistenza medica.
250 studenti aiutati economicamente con borse di studio e 120 studenti direttamente supportati con attività di doposcuola.
· 2) Centro di assistenza Pro Terra Sancta – Azizieh – Pannelli solari
Beneficiari raggiunti
150 famiglie ricevono installazione di pannelli solari per elettricità e riscaldamento.

· 3) Franciscan Care Center – Aleppo TSC
Descrizione Progetto
Il centro di riabilitazione psicologica per bambini, denominato Franciscan Care Center, è in funzione da Giugno 2018 presso alcuni dei locali del Terra Santa College (convento Sant’Antonio).
Le attività spaziano dall’arte terapia, musicoterapia, sport, assistenza face to face, insegnamento di Inglese e Francese.
Beneficiari raggiunti
1.000 bambini e adolescenti iscritti e assistiti presso il centro di riabilitazione del Terra Sancta College.
24 persone locali specializzate coinvolte nel centro (educatori, insegnanti, psicologi, allenatori, artisti).
· 4) Franciscan Care Center – Centri di Aleppo est
Descrizione Progetto
Tre centri di aiuto e accoglienza aperti nella zona di Aleppo Est (un nuovo centro è stato attivato nel corso del 2022), in collaborazione con il Muftì e il Mukthar della zona, per assistere: i bambini orfani di quell’area e non ancora registrati all’anagrafe – il progetto è denominato: “Un nome un futuro”; i bambini che vivono in contesto di guerra da quasi 10 anni, in zone povere e in forte stato di degrado; i bambini che dai 9-10 anni sono costretti a lasciare la scuola per lavorare; supporto e aiuto alle donne e madri di Aleppo est.
Beneficiari raggiunti
3.200 bambini/orfani di Aleppo est aiutati e seguiti nei 3 centri.
600 donne di Aleppo est sostenute e formate e 200 adulti aiutati con formazione e aiuto al lavoro.
43 persone locali specializzate coinvolti nelle 3 sedi del centro (educatori, insegnanti, psicologi, allenatori, artisti).
· 5) Scuola del Rosario - Aleppo

Copertura di parte della somma per acquistare un pullmino per trasporto bambini nella nuova sede della scuola.

Il centro di riabilitazione psicologica per bambini, denominato Franciscan Care Center, è stato attivato anche ad Hama, presso il complesso della chiesa della Vergina Immacolata dei Siriaci Cattolici di Hama.

200 bambini iscritti e assistiti presso il centro di riabilitazione di Hama, in maggioranza musulmani.
15 persone locali specializzate coinvolti (educatori, insegnanti, psicologi, allenatori, artisti).

· 7) Centro di Pro Terra Sancta Dar Bulus – Progetto Emergenza
Descrizione Progetto
Presso il centro Pro Terra Sancta è stato attivato un social/emergency center, il quale si occupa della distribuzione di vouchers per l’acquisto di cibo, medicine e supporto per le ricette mediche, gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini.
Il centro ha trovato un accordo con una decina di negozi alimentari e farmacie per l’acquisto attraverso vouchers e il successivo pagamento mensile. I beneficiari vengono individuati seguendo i seguenti criteri: situazione finanziaria e numero di componenti della famiglia; numero di bambini presenti nella famiglia e numero di anziani; vedove con bambini a carico; madri con marito in guerra.
Beneficiari raggiunti
600 famiglie supportate con food e non-food items ogni mese e 800 persone aiutate con assistenza medico/sanitaria e medicine; 200 famiglie con bambini neonati aiutate per spese latte/pannolini.
250 studenti supportati con borse di studio e materiale scolastico.
· 8) Centro di Pro Terra Sancta Dar Bulus – Progetto formazione, sviluppo e lavoro
Descrizione Progetto
Presso il centro Pro Terra Sancta è stato avviato uno sportello di aiuto al lavoro, che ha previsto l’offerta di un corso di formazioni per badanti, con successivo inserimento lavorativo, e un corso di formazione di business startup offerto a giovani selezionati con successivo grant di supporto alle idee più originali e sostenibili.
Beneficiari raggiunti
60 giovani formati nell’ambito delle business startup e 30 aiutati con un fondo per far partire le proprie attività.
· 9) Centro di accoglienza e assistenza medica - Tabbaleh
Descrizione Progetto
Supporto e aiuto alle attività di assistenza per i malati accolti presso il centro francescano di Tabbaleh. Il complesso possiede 24 stanze, e da alcuni anni ospita malati gravi che devono sostenere trattamenti medici di lungo periodo presso ospedali a Damasco: copertura di parte dei trattamenti medici; acquisto di medicine e copertura spese stanze della struttura; spese per garantire un pasto al giorno. Si intende aumentare il numero di malati aiutati e assistiti.

· 10) Asilo del Memoriale - Tabbaleh
Descrizione Progetto
Supporto e aiuto all’asilo di Tabbaleh. L’asilo si trova presso alcuni locali del complesso del convento dei francescani. Consta di 6 classi per i bambini dai 2,5 ai 5 anni, per un totale di 140 bambini, 10 maestre e 2 impiegati per segreteria/pulizie.

· 11) Franciscan Music Center - Tabbaleh
Descrizione Progetto
Il Franciscan Music Center, una piccola scuola di musica, sorta nei locali in disuso del complesso del convento. Il centro è nato in collaborazione un pianista locale e direttore del “Centro di armonia per l'educazione musicale di Damasco”. Sono proposti ai bambini e ragazzini siriani corsi di chitarra, pianoforte, violino e batteria. ProTS sostiene i costi correnti, l’acquisto di strumenti musicali e parte degli stipendi degli insegnanti.

· 12) PSS activities for youth – Tabbaleh
Descrizione Progetto
In collaborazione con CRS, vengono offerte, in alcuni locali dell’asilo e del convento, attività di PSS e arte-terapia per giovani e adolescenti.

· 13) Centro di assistenza medica
Descrizione Progetto
Nel quartiere di Jaramana, uno dei quartieri più poveri di Damasco, sorge dal 2015 lo studio medico attivo 5 ore al giorno per 5 giorni a settimana e specializzato in esami del sangue, studio del sangue periferico, aspirazione del midollo osseo, biopsia del midollo osseo. ProTS, in accordo con la parrocchia dei francescani di Bab Touma, anche durante il 2022 ha deciso di supportare parte dei costi del centro medico, coprendo le spese correnti e generali della struttura e in particolare offrendo assistenza economica ai pazienti più poveri e in gravi condizioni.

4.000 pazienti assistiti e curati presso la struttura.
2 dottori e 4 infermiere impiegate presso il centro medico.
· 14) Asilo di San George - Maaloula
Descrizione Progetto
Maaloula è un piccolo villaggio nel governatorato di Rif Dimashq a 56 km a nord-est di Damasco. L’asilo di St. George è all’interno del complesso della chiesa cattolica greco-melchita St. George e rappresenta l’unica realtà educativa rivolta ai più piccoli ancora funzionante nell’area. L’edificio è molto modesto e ad oggi l’asilo consiste in 5 classi e dei bagni adiacenti. Nel corso di questi anni di guerra l’edificio ha subìto molti danni, alcune aule sono pericolanti e in tutte le stanze sono presenti gravi infiltrazioni. Vengono sostenuti i costi correnti della struttura e coperture economiche per alcune famiglie che non riescono a pagare la retta mensile.

Presso il convento di Knaye, si è attivato un social/emergency center, il quale si occupa della distribuzione di cibo, medicine, vouchers per acquistare gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini. Descrizione Progetto
Attraverso la presenza francescana a Knaye, viene sostenuto un asilo nel villaggio di Darkoush, a sud di Idlib
- l’unica struttura di materna e infanzia funzionante nella zona. L’asilo accoglie bambini da 4 ai 6 anni, figli di famiglie musulmane poverissime. Il sostegno di ProTS ha previsto finora l’acquisto di armadietti, la riverniciatura delle aule e della sala mensa, l’acquisto di giochi e materiali didattici.

· 17) Centro di assistenza Pro Terra Sancta – Latakia – Emergenza generale
Descrizione Progetto
Presso il convento francescano di Lattakia è stato attivato un social/emergency center, il quale si occupa della distribuzione di cibo, medicine e assistenza medica, vouchers per acquistare gasolio per elettricità e riscaldamento, vestiti, detersivi e prodotti per l’igiene, pannolini e latte in polvere per bambini. Un contributo viene dato anche ai ragazzi attraverso la copertura della maggior parte delle spese per materiale scolastico (libri, cancelleria, parte delle rette scolastiche).

Descrizione Progetto
Il progetto, si è rivolto finora a ragazzi di famiglie di sfollati interni, ha proposto attività di recupero e riabilitazione attraverso laboratori di arte, sport e cucina, coinvolgendo anche insegnanti e personale specializzato.

Il social/emergency sorge all’interno del complesso del convento di Gemmaize, dove sono state recuperate due stanze per gli uffici di Pro Terra Sancta. Lavorano circa 10 persone tra staff fisso e collaboratori.
Si porta avanti un progetto per includere diverse attività sociali.

Descrizione Progetto
All’interno del complesso del convento di Tripoli, 3 locali sono appena stati rinnovati e adibiti a dispensario medico, attivi due giorni alla settimana con 3 dottori disponibili (incluso pediatra) e distribuzione di medicine.

· 25) “Centro Sportivo San Francesco” – El Mina
Descrizione Progetto
Presso il convento di San Francesco, a Tripoli, è presente un ampio centro sportivo composto da: un campo da calcio, un campo da basket, un’area parco-giochi. Il centro sportivo è di grande importanza nel quartiere e viene attualmente frequentato da bambini e ragazzi cristiani e musulmani e provenienti da famiglie libanesi, siriane e palestinesi. Si continua a sostenere il miglioramento e ampliamento del centro, continuano dei lavori per sistemare gli spazi di gioco, coprire i campi e rinnovare lo spogliatoio e organizzare tornei e corsi di sport.
Durante il 2022 è stato inoltre possibile completare la copertura del campo da calcio, per permetterne l’utilizzo in qualsiasi condizione climatica, e sono partiti i lavori per ampliare il centro sportivo creando una nuova struttura che ospita la palestra per il Judo, danza e ping-pong.

300 bambini e giovani provenienti da famiglie povere libanesi e rifugiati palestinesi e siriane hanno usufruito, quando possibile, dei campi e degli allenamenti organizzati proposti dal centro.

Tiro
· 28) Centro culturale a Tiro
Descrizione Progetto
All’interno del complesso del convento di Tiro, completati i primi lavori di ricupero di due stanze, per le attività di distribuzioni di aiuti alimentari, medicine, accoglienza.
Aperto anche un piccolo negozio di souvenirs a iniziati i primi lavori nella nuova guest-house, costruzione di bagni e un piccolo bar per accoglienza pellegrini e giovani.
· 29) Panetteria a Deir Mimas
Descrizione Progetto
Si intende finanziare e realizzare una panetteria che sia operativa per i poveri di Tiro e Deir Mimas, coinvolgendo 7 persone locali nella produzione di pane e altri pasti caldi per le famiglie povere della zona.

150 famiglie raggiunte settimanalmente.
Progetto in corso per promuovere la vendita di prodotti artigianali con l’obbiettivo di coinvolgere e così aiutare delle famiglie nuove dei villaggi intorno.
· 30) Sidone
Ricupero della presenza Cristiana a Sidone, maturazione di un progetto di attività interreligiosa e culturale.
Stipendi ordinari
della Custodia di Terra Santa
Stipendi mensili di circa 1.027 impiegati in Israele (69%) e Palestina (31%) divisi tra 15 scuole (62% del numero totale degli impiegati), 4 Case Nove per pellegrini (8% del numero degli impiegati), 80 santuari, 25 parrocchie e tante attività varie.
Durante la pandemia del COVID i dipendenti con residenza in Israele hanno potuto beneficiare di una forma di cassa integrazione (halat) fino all’ottobre 2021 che lo Stato pagava loro e corrispondeva al 70% dello stipendio. I lavoratori dello Stato di Palestina invece erano totalmente privi di welfare. Per questo la Custodia ha scelto di continuare a pagare la metà dello stipendio degli impiegati dei territori palestinesi rimasti a casa e ovviamente il 100% di quelli che potevano venire al lavoro, ha cercato anche di far lavorare nei conventi e nelle opere di restauro soprattutto cristiani palestinesi provenienti dalla West Bank per garantire un sostentamento alle loro famiglie. Questa scelta grava ovviamente sull’economia della Custodia in un tempo in cui non cerano state introiti dai santuari per l’assoluta mancanza di pellegrini da fine febbraio 2020 fino a qualche mese fa.

For centuries, the Custody of the Holy Land has been committed to the conservation and revitalization of the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and throughout the Middle East. Amongst the various objectives of the Franciscan mission, we recall the support and development of the Christian minority who live there, the conservation and enhancement of archaeological areas and sanctuaries, intervention in cases of emergency, the liturgy in places of worship, the apostolic works and assistance to pilgrims. Also for the two-year period 2021/2022, the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land was manifested through the planning, programming and execution of the following projects and works:
I. Works aimed at pilgrims.
II. Works aimed at benefiting the local community.
III. Rhodes
IV. Projects in Syria and Lebanon supported by PTS Pro Terra Sancta
V. Ordinary salaries of the Custody of the Holy Land
The listed works were created thanks to various types of economic contributions, first of all the Good Friday Collection, then the fund raising activities of the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) and the Pro Terra Sancta association (PTS), but also from other private and institutional donors, as well as from the income from the activities carried out.
Thank God, at the time this report is drafted (January 2023), here in Jerusalem as in the rest of the world, Covid-19 has greatly reduced its destructive potential and its effects no longer impede the movement of people. This is allowing a gradual recovery of the influx of pilgrims, with some economic relief for Christian families and also for the Custody. Thus we can continue the mission entrusted to us knowing that Divine Providence, which has wanted us here, does not cease to take care of us.
WORKS ADDRESSED TO PILGRIMS
Acre: “Nursery school” building
• The planning of the renovation interventions of the “Nursery school” building is underway, in anticipation of making the apartment in which the nuns who ran the work habitable again.
Ain Karem: shrine of the birthplace of St. John
• Completed the renovation of the roof of the church of St. John the Baptist which includes the consolidation of the stone vaults.
• Completed the maintenance work on the other roofs of the monastery to resolve the problems of humidity infiltration.
• Completed the restoration work on the sacristy and adjacent rooms which suffered from serious humidity problems.
• Work completed for the construction of an external draining ditch close to the wall of the building, to protect the underground part.
• Completed the maintenance work on the facade on the side of the monastery to solve problems of moisture infiltration.
• Completed the internal maintenance works of the convent of the nuns due to the problems of water infiltration from the roofs and the facade.
• In the planning stage, the restoration works of the church where archaeological excavations are foreseen.
• The safety of the electrical system of the entire complex which includes the convent, church, seminary and reception of pilgrims is under construction.
Ain Karem: Sanctuary of St. John in the Desert
• The most urgent interventions for the conservation of the sanctuary are underway, on the basis of a master plan which includes the regulation of rainwater in the area surrounding the monastery.
Beit Sahour: Shepherds’ Field
• A master plan of interventions for the conservation and development of the site has been defined, a large intervention which includes new external chapels for Liturgical celebrations, the redevelopment of the shepherds’ cave, new toilets and infrastructures.
• The works for the construction of a new “Pilgrims Centre” are being completed, including new toilets and some ancillary rooms with a small souvenir shop, a refreshment area and a multifunctional room for small conferences.
• Work is underway for the construction of three of the five new external chapels for the celebrations of pilgrims. The structural works have been completed and the works relating to systems and finishes are in progress.
• A project for the arrangement of the archaeological area and a new excavation campaign in collaboration between the PIAC and the SBF are also being developed.
Bethlehem: Monastery of Saint Catherine
• Completion of the pilot project which provides for the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of the convent to reduce the energy costs of the Parish and monastery and to encourage the local population to value the use of renewable energies.
• Completed the first phase of the works for the solution of the humidity problems affecting the convent of the nuns, renovating the main water distribution infrastructures.
• In the process of starting the second phase of the works to replace the pipes that collect and convey rainwater to the ancient cisterns located in the basement of the monastery.
Bethlehem: Children’s home for Boys
• Refurbishment of the pantry, kitchen and laundry to adapt them to hygiene and safety regulations.
• Completion of the children’s play area with resurfacing of the synthetic surface, setting up the equipped area and making the external structures safe.
Capernaum: Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Promise
• Installed new shrine signage and explanatory signs.
• Expansion of the Pilgrim Centre.
Emmaus Qubeibeh: Sanctuary of saints Simeon and Cleophas
• Completed the maintenance work on the church’s drainpipes which were causing major water infiltrations.
• Work completed for the consolidation of the wooden roof structures of the church.
• Other extraordinary maintenance interventions are being planned for the conservation of the structures of the church, the monastery and the former seminary.
• The project to equip the structure with an elevator shaft for the disabled is being developed.
Jericho: Site of the Baptism on the Jordan River
• Conservation interventions are underway on the property following the recent demining and the restitution of the area of the sanctuary of the Baptism of Jesus.
• Completion of a first phase of works for the cleaning and preliminary arrangement of the site, with interventions to make the central building safe and protect it from water infiltration and interventions on the surrounding area for the drainage of rainwater and levelling of the land left in very bad condition after demining operations.
• Creation of a master plan of interventions for the enhancement and development of the site for welcoming pilgrims.
• The first phase of the interventions envisaged in the master plan is in the design phase, with the construction of toilets for pilgrims and the arrangement of the premises under the church to house a chapel for Liturgical celebrations.
Jerusalem: Basilica of Gethsemane
• The archaeological excavations have brought to light a ritual bath from the 1st century, a Byzantine church from the 5th century with a stone inscription, the perimeter of the medieval monastery-hospice and various stone finds.
• The completion of the tunnel and lifts for groups of pilgrims are underway to connect the area of the basilica and the Valley of Cedron via a pedestrian path.
• Work is at an advanced stage for the construction of the service centre for pilgrims in the Cedron Valley.
• The process of starting work on the new lighting system for the exterior of the basilica, promoted by the Municipality of Jerusalem.
• The 3 external chapels for the Liturgical celebrations in the “Garden of the Apostles” of the monastery of the Basilica of All Nations are being designed.
Jerusalem: Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre of Our Lord
• Restoration work is underway on the floor of the Basilica and the related infrastructures, in agreement with the Greeks and Armenians and in collaboration with the La Sapienza University (Rome) and the Venaria Restoration Centre (TO).
• The complete renovation of the second floor of the monastery is at an advanced stage to restore the rooms and equip them with en-suite toilets. The implementation of a further plan to increase the number of cells available is also underway.
• In the process of starting the restoration work on the Crusader chapel, adjusting the lighting and ventilation of the premises and solving the problems of water infiltration from which it suffers.
• The renovation work on the first floor of the monastery (kitchen, refectory and other bedrooms) is in the planning stage.
• The safety measures for the electrical system of the monastery, the chapels and the sacristy are under construction.
Jerusalem: parish centre
• The first rationalization interventions of the parish centre spaces have been completed.
• More substantial interventions relating to the provision of adequate systems and services are being planned.
Jerusalem: Christian Information Centre
• Work completed for the construction of five multimedia educational rooms for pilgrims dedicated to knowledge of the Holy Sepulchre.
Jerusalem: Christian Media Centre
• Completed the works for the adaptation of the room used as a recording studio for the programmes.
Jerusalem: Monastery of St. Saviour
Infirmary
• Internal maintenance work completed in the infirmary rooms with replacement of the air conditioning system and painting/decorating of the rooms.
Offices
• Completed the renovation of the premises for the relocation of the Souvenir Shop in view of the creation of the historical section of the Museum of the Holy Land.
• Completed the restructuring of the former communication offices, to relocate other services of the Custody such as the master of Liturgical Ceremonies Office, the Liturgical Calendar Planner’s office, etc.
Monastery
• New signage for the monastery has been erected.
• Completed the renovation works of the chapter house.
• Completed the expansion works of the friars’ guesthouse with the renovation of the adjacent rooms and the construction of 5 new rooms.
• Completed the renovation/maintenance of the friars’ rooms.
• Upgrading of the heating and domestic hot water system to reduce costs is under study.
Jerusalem: “Maria Bambina”, Home for Pilgrims
• Maintenance work in the rooms is underway, pending more substantial work envisaged in the master plan of interventions which has been defined for the improvement of the reception of pilgrims.
Jerusalem: Sanctuary of Dominus Flevit
• A master plan of the interventions for the improvement of the reception of pilgrims and visitors in the sanctuary is being developed.
Jerusalem: The Holy Land Museum
• A modern museum centre is under construction for the enhancement of the Franciscan artistic, archaeological and cultural heritage. The area of about 2500 m2 will include:
• Archaeological Museum: The places of the Bible in Palestine (Monastery of the Flagellation) (Third phase)
• Historical Museum: The Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land (San Salvatore Convent)
• Structural consolidation and finishing/equipment interventions completed for the premises that will complete the museum area at the Flagellation sanctuary. The interior fittings are under construction.
• Structural consolidation works are underway in the museum area at the convent of San Salvatore.
• The design of systems, finishes and fittings of the museum area at the monastery of St. Saviour is nearing completion

• Completed the renovation of the Dar al Consul complex in the Old City, recovering the disused ground floor of approximately 1200m2 with enhancement of the archaeological finds and preparation of rooms for pilgrims and for cultural activities at a local level.
Jerusalem: Monastery of the Flagellation
• Completion of the works for an initial structural safety of the second floor of the most recent part of the convent.
• Work completed to improve the decor and expand the space in the courtyard available for pilgrims.
• Completion of the works for the construction of new toilets for pilgrims.
• Work completed for the renovation of the toilet facilities in the sacristy.
• The works for the installation of a new domestic hot water system are in the planning stage.
Mount Tabor: Basilica of the Transfiguration
• Structural consolidation and restoration of the bell towers completed.
• Work is underway for the renovation of a part of the Casa Nova, the construction of a small convent is planned to house the nuns who will collaborate in welcoming pilgrims.
• The study is underway for the recovery of the rest of the Casanova building, for the reception of pilgrims.
Naim: Sanctuary of the resurrection of the widow’s daughter
• Completion of the works for the reopening of the site with the construction of a prefabricated structure for sacristy use and for the presence of a caretaker. The interventions for the arrangement of the part of the site around the church are underway.
Nazareth: Basilica of the Annunciation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary
• Completion of the renovation of an entire floor of the monastery with installation of electrical, air conditioning and domestic hot water systems, which includes low consumption systems. The system preparations were made for the future renovation of the other floors of the monastery.
NB: In carrying out these works, there were some complicating issues due to the permits that needed to be requested and during the various lockdowns, a Christian work force from the West Bank was given privilege to work in view of the fact that they came from an area that does not benefit from welfare or “social shock absorbers” and therefore during the last two years as a result of the Covid lockdowns, they would have been totally without economic resources.
WORKS FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
• Bethlehem: Boys Children’s Home; a home for 30 children from families in social difficulty, 20 boarders (24 hours) and 10 day care boys.
• Financing of 509 university scholarships (284 from the Custodial Treasury and 225 through the FFHL Franciscan Holy Land Foundation) for a duration of 4 years, distributed in the various universities (Bethlehem, Hebrew University, Bir Zeit, and Amman).
• Aids for making the activities of 10 small craft businesses safe.
• In Bethlehem and Jerusalem, additional economic aid was sent on several occasions to meet the health costs of families and for basic necessities, through the parishes, during the Covid pandemic.
Schools:
Amman:
• During 2021 there were no major works due to the Covid Pandemic. The emphasis was on distance learning and following students’ wellbeing. However, the renovation of the vocational centre (the former minor seminary) was completed, transforming it into a multifunctional reception house for spiritual retreats and youth activities, number of beds 20, two well-equipped conference rooms, lift, enlargement of the chapel, new furniture.
• In 2022 work began to cover part of the square and to arrange the infrastructure for the Terra Sancta College’s sports activities.
Bethlehem:
• Arrangement of the multipurpose Millennium classroom.
Cana:
• Completed the works for the construction of the new school. The complex also includes the parish centre and a covered car park of an area of 5,000m2.
Jerusalem - Saint Joseph’s School (Jaffa Gate):
• Maintenance work completed on some of the school’s classrooms and service areas.
Jerusalem - Terra Sancta School (Damascus Gate):
• Work is nearing completion for the construction of new premises for sports facilities below the large school courtyard, which will house a swimming pool, gymnasium and playing fields on the roof of the building. These premises will also be for the use of the youth of the Old City.
Jerusalem - Helen Keller School – Beth Hanina:
• Completed the renovation of the elementary school after the opening of the kindergarten (currently 400 pupils in total).
Jerusalem - Helen Keller School (school for the visually impaired):
• Completion of the renovation of the school.
Jaffa – Elementary School:
• Structural consolidation work completed on a portion of the building that houses 6 elementary school classrooms, restoring the safety conditions necessary for the use of the premises. At the same time, the systems and finishes were renewed.
Jericho:
• Rearrangement of the school library
• Acquisition of three giant screens with internet access for the kindergarten
• Acquisition of 4 overhead projectors for kindergarten
• Creation of a fresco around the walls of the kindergarten
• Construction of a bicycle parking area
Apartments for the needy and young couples
Jerusalem:
•Old City. The renovation work on the houses in the Old City continues with the aim of improving the living conditions of the residents:
o complete renovation of 8 houses;
o partial renovation of 6 houses;
o extraordinary maintenance of the exteriors (facades, roofs, etc.) of 7 homes.
o ordinary maintenance or emergency interventions in numerous homes.
• Dar el Kbire: the procedure is underway for obtaining permits for the expansion of the building by 300-400m2 and the design of the improvement intervention on the 19 existing houses and the exteriors (facades, roofs, etc.). The total area affected by the project is approximately 2500m2.
• Tumian Palace: the procedure is underway for obtaining permits for the expansion of the building with the construction of 3 additional floors and 800m2 for residential and religious use.
• Abu Geries: the procedure is underway for obtaining permits for the expansion of the building with the construction of 750m2 for offices, restaurants and shops.
• Pisgat Zeev housing project: the procedure is underway for obtaining permits for the construction of the new residential complex with 70-80 residential units and 300m2 for commercial use.
Nazareth:
• Karm el Sacheb housing Project: once the design phase and the procedure for obtaining permits for the construction of a residential complex have been completed, the construction works on the project must begin.
Other cultural works:
• Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Every year the Custody of the Holy Land financially supports the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem.
• Formation of 62 students in biblical sciences at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum from various parts of the world and from poor religious provinces and dioceses, to whom the Custody guarantees room and board and a scholarship. They are destined to teach Sacred Scripture in various countries of the world.
•Christian Media Centre. The services offered include: Website, completely renewed, simplified in use and now mobile friendly; Terra Santa News weekly news bulletin that tells about the faith, history and current events of the Holy Land; broadcast by about 35 broadcasters worldwide in 10 languages (from this year also in Chinese); documentaries on social and religious themes, in several languages; live coverage of liturgical celebrations and events.
• Institute of Music The Magnificat. Affiliated with the Vicenza Conservatory, the Magnificat promotes research activities and cultural events at a local and international level. It welcomes more than 220 Christian, Muslim and Jewish students, led by about 30 professors who are also Jewish, Christian and Muslim.
• Reception in the International Franciscan Seminary of St Saviour in Jerusalem and in the Seminary of Ain Karem and theological formation at the Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum of 31 young people from the various Provinces of the Order of Friars Minor.
• Formation of 60 young people in formation in the Custody (from aspirancy to specialist studies).
RHODES
• Distribution of food, medical and dental care for refugees in transit in reception centres on Rhodes and Kos.
• Rhodes: weekly distribution of up to 700 food parcels and basic necessities for hygiene to needy locals and refugees.
• Restructuring of the Pastoral Centre of the parish of Kos following the 2017 earthquake.
• Due to the economic crisis in Greece from 2008 to today, the Custody:
o help with psychological support for cancer patients;
o offering free English, Greek and Italian lessons to local people and refugees;
o offering scholarships for the youth of the parish and for children with learning difficulties.

Aleppo
• 1) Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Centre – Azizieh – General emergency
Project description and activity: the activated social/emergency centre deals with the distribution of food, medical assistance, vouchers to purchase diesel for electricity and heating, clothes, detergents and hygiene products, diapers and powdered milk for children. There are 25 volunteers, mostly young people, 15 people who make up the more or less permanent staff of the centre. The beneficiaries are identified according to the following criteria: financial situation and number of family members; number of children in the family and number of elderly people; widows with dependent children or husbands at war. During 2021-2022 a kitchen was activated, with approximately 20 staff, cooks and volunteers involved, to prepare and offer hot meals, meeting the skyrocketing prices and the almost total lack of electricity to allow cooking at home.
Beneficiaries reached 2021-2022
3,000 families receive parcels of food and non-food items, electricity and water (including 500 families with infants/toddlers + 100 disabled Muslim children).
1,200 people a day receive a hot meal, prepared and distributed in the Franciscan social kitchen of the centre.

• 3) Franciscan Care Centre – Aleppo TSC
Project Description:
The psychological rehabilitation centre for children, called the Franciscan Care Centre, has been in operation since June 2018 in some of the premises of the Terra Sancta College (at St. Anthony’s Monastery).
The activities range from art therapy, music therapy, sports, face to face assistance, teaching of English and French.
Beneficiaries reached:
1,000 children and adolescents enrolled and assisted at the rehabilitation centre at Terra Sancta College.
24 specialized local people involved at the centre (educators, teachers, psychologists, coaches, artists).
• 4) Franciscan Care Centre – Centres of East Aleppo
Project Description
Three aid and reception centres opened in the East Aleppo area (a new centre was activated in 2022), in collaboration with the Mufti and the Mukthar of the area, to assist: orphaned children in that area and not yet registered at the Registry Office – the project is called: “A name-a future”; children who have been living in the context of war for almost 10 years, in poor areas and in a strong state of degradation; children aged 9-10 who are forced to leave school to work; support and help to women and mothers in East Aleppo.
Beneficiaries reached:
3,200 children/orphans from East Aleppo helped and looked after in the 3 centres.
600 women of East Aleppo supported and trained and 200 adults helped with training and job assistance.
43 specialized local people involved in the 3 centres of the centre (educators, teachers, psychologists, coaches, artists).

Project Description:
Coverage of part of the sum to purchase a minibus to transport children to the new school premises.

Project Description:
The psychological rehabilitation centre for children, called the Franciscan Care Centre, has also been activated in Hama, at the complex of the church of the Immaculate Virgin Mary of the Syriac Catholics of Hama.
Beneficiaries reached:
200 children enrolled and assisted at the Hama rehabilitation centre, mostly Muslims.

Damascus
• 7) Pro Terra Sancta Dar Bulus Centre – Emergency Project
Project Description:
A social/emergency centre has been activated at the Pro Terra Sancta centre, which deals with the distribution of vouchers for the purchase of food, medicines and support for medical prescriptions, diesel for electricity and heating, clothes, detergents and products for hygiene, diapers and powdered milk for children.
The centre has reached an agreement with a dozen food shops and pharmacies for the purchase through vouchers and the subsequent monthly payment. The beneficiaries are identified according to the following criteria: financial situation and number of family members; number of children in the family and number of elderly people; widows with dependent children; mothers with husbands at war.
• 8) Pro Terra Sancta Dar Bulus Centre – Training, development and work project
Project Description:
At the Pro Terra Sancta centre, a work aid desk was launched, which provided for the offer of a training course for caregivers, with subsequent job placement, and a business start-up training course offered to selected young people with a subsequent grant to support the most original and sustainable ideas.
Beneficiaries reached:
60 young people trained in business start-ups and 30 helped with a fund to start their own businesses.
• 9) Reception and medical assistance centre - Tabbaleh
Project Description:
Support and help in assistance activities for the sick received at the Franciscan centre of Tabbaleh. The complex has 24 rooms, and for some years has been hosting seriously ill people, cancer patients, who have to undergo long-term medical treatments in hospitals in Damascus: coverage of part of the medical treatments; purchase of medicines and coverage of room costs; expenses to guarantee one meal a day. The intention is to increase the number of patients helped and assisted.
Beneficiaries reached:
140 sick people hosted at the centre annually.
120 people helped with the distribution of medicines and covering the costs of operations and hospitalizations.
• 10) Memorial Kindergarten - Tabbaleh
Project Description:
Support and help to the kindergarten of Tabbaleh. The kindergarten is located in some rooms of the complex of the Franciscan Monastery. It has 6 classes for children aged 2.5 to 5, for a total of 140 children, 10 teachers and 2 secretarial/cleaning employees.

• 11) Franciscan Music Centre - Tabbaleh
Project Description:
The Franciscan Music Centre, a small music school, built in the disused premises of the monastery complex. The centre was born in collaboration with a local pianist and director of the “Damascus Harmony Centre for Music Education”. Guitar, piano, violin and drum lessons are offered to Syrian children and teenagers. Pro Terra Sancta covers running costs, the purchase of musical instruments and part of the teachers’ salaries.
Beneficiaries reached:
100 children + 8 local music teachers.
• 12) PSS activities for youth – Tabbaleh
Project Description:
In collaboration with CRS, PSS and art therapy activities for young people and adolescents are offered in some rooms of the kindergarten and monastery.
Beneficiaries reached:
100 young people from the poor neighbourhoods of Damascus.
• 13) Medical Assistance Centre
Project Description:
Since 2015, in the Jaramana district, one of the poorest districts of Damascus, there has been a medical assistance centre active 5 hours a day for 5 days a week and specialized in blood tests, study of peripheral blood, bone marrow aspiration, bone marrow biopsy . Pro Terra Sancta, in agreement with the Franciscan parish of Bab Touma, also during 2022 has decided to support part of the costs of the medical centre, covering the current and general expenses of the structure and in particular by offering economic assistance to the poorest and most seriously ill patients.
Beneficiaries reached:
4,000 patients assisted and treated at the facility.
2 doctors and 4 nurses employed at the medical centre.
• 14) St. George’s Kindergarten - Maaloula
Project Description:
Maaloula is a small village in Rif Dimashq governorate 56 km northeast of Damascus. The St. George’s kindergarten is within the complex of St. George’s Greek-Melchite Catholic church and represents the only educational reality aimed at the youngest still functioning in the area. The building is very modest and today the kindergarten consists of 5 classrooms and adjacent bathrooms. During the years of war the building has suffered a lot of damage, some classrooms are unsafe and in all the rooms there is serious infiltration of water. The current costs of the structure and economic coverage for some families who are unable to pay the monthly fee are supported.

Knaye
• 15) Pro Terra Sancta Emergency Centre - Knaye e Yacoubieh (Province of Idlib)
Project Description:
At the Monastery of Knaye, a social/emergency centre has been activated, which deals with the distribution of food, medicines, vouchers to buy diesel for electricity and heating, clothes, detergents and hygiene products, diapers and powdered milk for children. The beneficiaries are identified according to the following criteria: financial situation and number of family members; number of children in the family and number of elderly people; widows with dependent children; mothers with husbands at war.
Beneficiaries reached:
240 families supported with water, electricity, heating (Christian and Muslim families).
60 children and their families; 65 students and 11 local teachers.
• 16) Darkoush Kindergarten - Idlib
Project Description:
Through the Franciscan presence in Knaye, a kindergarten is supported in the village of Darkoush, south of Idlib
- The only functioning nursery and childcare facility in the area. The kindergarten welcomes children from 4 to 6 years old, children of very poor Muslim families. The support of Pro Terra Sancta has so far foreseen the purchase of lockers, the repainting of the classrooms and the canteen, the purchase of games and educational materials.

Lattachieh
• 17) Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Centre – Latakia – General emergency
Project Description:
A social/emergency centre was activated at the Franciscan convent of Lattakia, which deals with the distribution of food, medicines and medical assistance, vouchers to purchase diesel to generate electricity and heating, clothes, detergents and hygiene products, diapers and powdered milk for children. A contribution is also given to children through the coverage of most of the expenses for school materials (books, stationery, part of the school fees).
Beneficiaries reached:
420 families helped with food and non-food items, monthly house rent; 45 receive milk and diapers.
130 people a month helped with medicines and health care.
150 students and their families.
• 18) Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Centre – Latakia – Medical dispensary
Project Description:
In collaboration with AVSI and the apostolic Nunciature in Damascus, a medical dispensary has been set up within the centre, which will see those most in need.
Beneficiaries reached:
500 people helped with free medical visits and weekly distribution of medicines.
• 19) Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Centre – Latakia – Women’s support and development
Project Description: To facilitate and develop Women’s support and development.
Beneficiaries reached:
50 women helped in life skills training and job placement, through a support program of activities and business start-ups.
40 women attended the 6-month cutting and sewing course and were then helped to find a job placement.
• 20) Lattakia Summer Camp – recreation and psychological support centre for children
Project Description:
The project, which has so far been aimed at young people from families of internally displaced persons, has proposed recovery and rehabilitation activities through art, sport and cooking workshops, also involving teachers and specialized personnel.

• 21) Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Centre – Gemmaize – General emergency
Description Project and activity:
The social/emergency is located within the Gemmaize monastery complex, where two rooms have been recovered for the Pro Terra Sancta offices. About 10 people work between permanent staff and collaborators.
A project is carried out to include various social activities.
Beneficiaries reached:
650 families in Beirut, Tripoli and Tire reached by the distribution and aid of basic necessities.
35 houses repaired and 35 families who have returned to live in safety in their homes.
350 people helped with medicines and coverage of medical expenses.
80 scholarships for needy students in the Beirut area.
50 scholarships for needy university students in the Beirut and Harissa area.
• 22) Franciscan Care Centre - Psychological rehabilitation centre for children
Project Description:
The psychological rehabilitation centre for children, called the Franciscan Care Centre, has also been in operation in Beirut since November 2021. 4 rooms and a large living room have been recovered
Beneficiaries reached:
300 children enrolled and assisted at the Hama rehabilitation centre, mostly Muslims.
60 young people aged between 25 and 35 helped with psychological support and help for job placement, life skills.

Tripoli
• 24) Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Centre – Medical Dispensary
Project Description
Within the Tripoli monastery complex, 3 rooms have just been renovated and used as a medical dispensary, active two days a week with 3 doctors available (including a paediatrician) and distribution of medicines.
Beneficiaries reached:
500 people helped in the first month, including 70 children.
• 25) “The St. Francis’ Sports Centre” – El Mina
Project Description:
At the monastery of St. Francis, in Tripoli, there is a large sports centre consisting of: a football field, a basketball court, a playground area. The sports centre is of great importance in the neighbourhood and is currently attended by Christian and Muslim children and young people from Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian families. We continue to support the improvement and expansion of the centre, work continues to arrange the playing spaces, cover the fields and renovate the locker room and organize tournaments and sports courses.
During 2022 it was also possible to complete the roofing of the football field, to allow its use in any weather condition, and work began to expand the sports center by creating a new structure that houses the gym for judo, dance and table tennis.
Beneficiaries reached:
300 children and young people from poor Lebanese families and Palestinian and Syrian refugees took advantage, when possible, of the camps and organized training offered by the centre.
• 26) Education support – Tripoli
Project Description:
In collaboration with local schools (Tripoli, Adonis, Carmelitani, Gbaleh, Menjez) scholarships were established and granted during the year to support the most needy students and families.
Beneficiaries reached:
100 scholarships for the most needy children and families.
• 27) PAD Centre – Gbaleh, Tripoli
Project Description:
Support to the PAD psychological recovery centre, set up at the school complex of the Franciscan Sisters of Ivrea di Gbaleh.
Beneficiaries reached:
40 families helped by psychologists and professionals in a path of psychological rehabilitation.
Shot
• 28) Cultural Centre in Tyre
Project Description:
Inside the complex of the convent of Tiro, the first works of recovery of two rooms have been completed, for the activities of distribution of food aid, medicines, hospitality.
A small souvenir shop has also been opened and the first works have begun for the new guest-house, the construction of baths and a small bar to welcome pilgrims and young people.
• 29) Bakery in Deir Mimas
Project Description:
The intention is to finance and build a bakery that is operational for the poor of Tire and Deir Mimas, involving 7 local people in the production of bread and other hot meals for poor families in the area.
Beneficiaries reached:
150 families reached weekly.
Project underway to promote the sale of handicraft products with the aim of involving and thus helping new families from the surrounding villages.
• 30) Sidon
Recovery of the Christian presence in Sidon, maturation of a project of interreligious and cultural activity.
ORDINARY SALARIES
OF THE CUSTODY OF THE HOLY LAND
Monthly salaries of approximately 1,027 employees in Israel (69%) and Palestine (31%) divided between 15 schools (62% of the total number of employees), 4 Casa Nova Hostel for pilgrims (8% of the number of employees), 80 sanctuaries, 25 parishes and many other various activities.
During the COVID pandemic, employees residing in Israel were able to benefit from a form of redundancy fund (halat) until October 2021 which the State paid them and corresponded to 70% of their salary. The workers of the State of Palestine, on the other hand, were totally deprived of any form of welfare. For this reason the Custody chose to continue to pay half the salary of the employees of the Palestinian Territories who remained at home and obviously 100% of those who were able come to work. The Custody also tried to use mainly Christian people to work in the monasteries and in the projects involving restoration works, employing Palestinians from the West Bank to ensure a livelihood for their families. This choice obviously weighted and weighs heavily on the economy of the Custody at a time when there was no income from the sanctuaries due to the absolute lack of pilgrims from the end of February 2020 until a few months ago.
