Eccellenza Reverendissima,

“Gesù sarà in agonia fino alla fine del mondo; non bisogna dormire durante questo tempo” (Blaise Pascal, Pensieri, 553). La frase di Pascal ci richiama il mistero della lotta e della sofferenza del Redentore, che proprio l’anno liturgico e in special modo la Settimana Santa ed il Triduo Sacro ci fanno celebrare e attualizzare. Ma è una affermazione che sottolinea anche il fatto che il Cristo si identifica con l’agonia e la sofferenza di coloro che nella storia sembrano non conoscere altro che un interminabile Venerdì Santo: le persone provate dalla solitudine, dalla guerra e dalla fame, dal rifiuto e dall’abbandono.

Papa Francesco nella preghiera pronunciata al termine della Via Crucis al Colosseo il 19 aprile 2019, rivede i mali e i dolori del mondo e li pone al fianco della croce di Gesù: “La croce delle persone affamate di pane e di amore; la croce delle persone sole e abbandonate perfino dai propri figli e parenti; la croce delle persone assetate di giustizia e di pace; la croce delle persone che non hanno il conforto della fede; la croce degli anziani che si trascinano sotto il peso degli anni e della solitudine; la croce dei migranti che trovano le porte chiuse a causa della paura e dei cuori blindati dai calcoli politici; la croce dei piccoli, feriti nella loro innocenza e nella loro purezza; la croce dell’umanità che vaga nel buio dell’incertezza e nell’oscurità della cultura del momentaneo”. E conclude “Signore Gesù, ravviva in noi la speranza della risurrezione e della Tua definitiva vittoria contro ogni male e ogni morte”.

La Terra Santa è il luogo fisico in cui Gesù ha vissuto questa agonia e questa sofferenza trasformandola in azione redentiva grazie a un amore infinito. Nel Getsemani lo fa fino a sudare sangue. Nel Cenacolo anticipa l’offerta di sé che farà sulla croce attraverso il dono dell’Eucaristia, ma anche attraverso la lavanda dei piedi e il precetto dell’amore fraterno. Lungo la Via Dolorosa possiamo ancora immaginare i luoghi del duplice processo e della condanna di Gesù. Lo possiamo vedere mentre percorre la strada portando la croce, è aiutato dal Cireneo, fino a giungere sul Golgota per essere inchiodato, affidarci Maria, consegnarsi nelle mani del Padre e morire, essere deposto in un sepolcro nuovo e vuoto dal quale risorgerà il terzo giorno.

La Terra Santa e in modo speciale la comunità cristiana ivi residente ha sempre occupato un posto importante e speciale nel cuore della Chiesa universale che - come ricorda san Paolo - nel momento in cui si impegna a esprimere la propria solidarietà, anche economica, con Gerusalemme, compie un atto di restituzione: da Gerusalemme tutta la Chiesa ha ricevuto infatti il dono e la gioia del Vangelo e della salvezza in Cristo Gesù “che da ricco che era, si è fatto povero per voi, perché voi diventaste ricchi per mezzo della sua povertà” (2 Cor 7,9). Ed è la consapevolezza del dono ricevuto, che motiva ancora a donare con gioia e generosità.

Voi ben sapete quali dure prove abbia subìto lungo i secoli la Chiesa che vive in Terra Santa e in tutto il Medio Oriente. Quelle prove ancora non sono finite: la tragedia della continua e progressiva riduzione del numero di fedeli locali, può comportare il conseguente rischio di veder scomparire le diverse tradizioni cristiane che risalgono ai primi secoli. Lunghe e logoranti guerre hanno prodotto e continuano a produrre milioni di rifugiati e condizionano fortemente il futuro di intere generazioni, che si vedono private dei beni più elementari come il diritto a un’infanzia serena, a un’istruzione scolastica organica, a una giovinezza dedita alla ricerca di un lavoro, alla formazione di una famiglia, alla scoperta della propria vocazione, a una vita adulta operosa e dignitosa e a una vecchiaia serena.

La Chiesa continua a operare per la salvaguardia della presenza cristiana e per dar voce a chi non ne ha. Lo fa certamente sul versante pastorale e liturgico, che è fondamentale per la vita delle nostre piccole comunità. Ma Essa continua ad impegnarsi in modo serio anche per provvedere a un’educazione di qualità attraverso le scuole, che sono fondamentali per salvaguardare l’identità cristiana e per costruire una convivenza fraterna specialmente con i musulmani, secondo le indicazioni contenute nella “Dichiarazione di Abu Dhabi”. La Chiesa continua, grazie alla generosità dei fedeli di tutto il mondo, a mettere a disposizione case per i giovani che desiderano formare una nuova famiglia, così come a creare opportunità di lavoro. E ancora a provvedere un aiuto materiale concreto lì dove si presentano forme di povertà endemica, come pure bisogni sanitari ed emergenze umanitarie legate ai flussi di rifugiati e di lavoratori migranti stranieri.

Anche la cura dei Santuari, che sarebbe impossibile senza la colletta pro Terra Sancta, è di fondamentale importanza, sia perché essi sono i luoghi materiali che conservano la memoria della divina rivelazione, del mistero dell’incarnazione e della nostra redenzione; sia perché in quei luoghi la comunità cristiana locale trova le fondamenta della propria identità. Attorno ai santuari e grazie alla loro presenza trovano un lavoro dignitoso molti dei fedeli cristiani impegnati nell’accogliere i milioni di pellegrini che in questi ultimi anni giungono, sempre più numerosi, per visitare i Luoghi Santi.

A Lei, ai Sacerdoti, ai Consacrati e ai Fedeli, che si adoperano per la buona riuscita della Colletta, in fedeltà ad un’opera che la Chiesa richiede di compiere a tutti i suoi figli secondo le modalità note, ho la gioia di trasmettere la viva riconoscenza del Santo Padre Francesco. E mentre invoco copiose benedizioni divine su codesta Diocesi, porgo il più fraterno saluto nel Signore Gesù.

Excellence,

« Jésus sera en l'agonie jusqu'à la fin du monde ; il ne faut pas dormir pendant ce temps» (Blaise Pascal, Pensées, 553). La phrase de Pascal nous rappelle le mystère de la lutte et de la souffrance du Rédempteur, que l'année liturgique et particulièrement la Semaine Sainte et le Triduum sacré nous font célébrer et actualiser. Cette affirmation souligne également le fait que le Christ s'identifie à l'agonie et à la souffrance de ceux qui, dans l'histoire, semblent ne connaître qu'un interminable Vendredi saint : le peuple éprouvé par la solitude, par la guerre et par la faim, par le refus et par l'abandon.

Le pape François, dans la prière qu’il prononça au Colisée à la fin de la Via Crucis, le 19 avril 2019, passe en revue les maux et les douleurs du monde et les dépose aux pieds de la Croix de Jésus: «La croix des gens affamés de pain et d'amour ; la croix des personnes seules et abandonnées, même par leurs enfants et leurs proches; la croix de personnes assoiffées de justice et de paix; la croix des personnes qui n'ont pas le réconfort de la foi; la croix des personnes âgées accablées par le poids des années et la solitude; la croix des migrants qui trouvent les portes fermées à cause de la peur et des cœurs durcis par les calculs politiques; la croix des petits, blessés dans leur innocence et dans leur pureté ; la croix de l'humanité qui erre dans l'opacité de l'incertitude et dans l'obscurité de la culture de l'instantané». Et il conclutlain : « Seigneur Jésus, fais revivre en nous l'espérance de la résurrection et de ta victoire définitive contre le mal et contre la mort ».

La Terre sainte est le lieu physique où Jésus a vécu cette agonie et cette souffrance en la transformant en action rédemptrice grâce à un amour infini. À Gethsémani, cette Terre a reçu les gouttes de sang qu’Il a transpiré (Lc 22, 44). Dans la chambre haute, Il anticipe l'offrande qu'il fera sur la croix par le don de l'Eucharistie, mais aussi à travers le lavement des pieds et le commandement de l'amour fraternel. Le long de la Via Dolorosa, nous pouvons encore imaginer les lieux du double procès et de la condamnation de Jésus. Nous pouvons le voir alors qu'il parcourt les rues en portant sa Croix. Il est aidé par le Cyrénéen, jusqu'à ce qu'il atteigne le Golgotha pour être crucifié. Nous le voyons nous confier à Marie, se livrant à son Père et mourir, et enfin, être déposé dans un sépulcre neuf et vide d'où Il ressuscitera le troisième jour.

La Terre sainte, en particulier la communauté chrétienne qui y réside, a toujours occupé une place importante et spéciale au cœur de l'Église universelle qui - comme le rappelle saint Paul - lorsqu'elle s'engage à exprimer sa solidarité, y compris économique, avec Jérusalem, accomplit un acte de restitution: de Jérusalem, toute l'Église a en effet reçu le don et la joie de l'Évangile et du Salut en Jésus-Christ «qui, en étant riche, s'est fait pauvre pour vous, afin que vous puissiez devenir riche par sa pauvreté» (2 Co. 8, 9). Et c'est la conscience du don reçu qui nous motive encore à donner avec joie et générosité.

Vous savez bien quelles ont été les épreuves que l'Église vivant en Terre sainte et dans tout le Moyen-Orient a traversées au cours des siècles. Ces épreuves ne sont pas encore terminées: la tragédie de la réduction progressive du nombre de fidèles locaux se poursuit, avec le risque de voir disparaître les différentes traditions chrétiennes qui remontent aux premiers siècles. Des guerres longues et épuisantes ont produit et continuent de produire des millions de réfugiés et influencent fortement l'avenir de générations entières qui se voient privées des biens les plus fondamentaux tels que le droit à une enfance paisible, à une éducation scolaire harmonieuse, à une jeunesse dédiée la recherche d'un emploi, à la formation d'une famille, à la découverte de sa vocation, une vie adulte entreprenante et honorable, et une vieillesse paisible.

L'Église continue d'œuvrer pour sauvegarder la présence chrétienne et donner la parole à ceux qui ne l’ont pas. De toute évidence, elle le fait dans le domaine pastoral et liturgique, qui est fondamental pour la vie de nos petites communautés. Elle continue aussi à travailler sérieusement pour fournir une éducation de qualité à travers les écoles, qui sont essentielles à la sauvegarde de l'identité chrétienne et à l’édification d’une coexistence fraternelle, en particulier avec les musulmans, selon les indications contenues dans la Déclaration d'Abu Dhabi. Grâce à la générosité des fidèles du monde entier, l'Église continue à mettre des logements à disposition des jeunes qui souhaitent former une nouvelle famille, ainsi qu’à leur faciliter la recherche d’un emploi. De même, elle continue à fournir une aide matérielle concrète là où existent des formes de pauvreté endémique, comme par exemple des besoins de santé et des urgences humanitaires liés aux flux de réfugiés et de travailleurs migrants étrangers.

Enfin, le soin des Sanctuaires, qui serait impossible sans la Collecte pro Terra Sancta, est également d'une importance primordiale, à la fois parce que ce sont les lieux concrets qui préservent la mémoire de la Révélation divine, du mystère de l'Incarnation et de notre Rédemption, et parce qu’en ces lieux, la communauté chrétienne locale trouve les racines de sa propre identité. Grâce à la présence des Sanctuaires, de nombreux fidèles chrétiens trouvent un travail estimable en s’engageant à accueillir les millions de pèlerins qui, ces dernières années, sont venus de plus en plus nombreux visiter les Lieux saints.

A vous, aux prêtres, aux consacrés et aux fidèles qui aspirez au succès de la Collecte, dans un attachement profond à une œuvre que l'Église recommande à tous ses enfants selon des modalités connues, j'ai la joie de transmettre la vive reconnaissance de notre Saint-Père le Pape François.

Implorant de nombreuses bénédictions divines sur votre diocèse, je vous présente mes salutations les plus fraternelles dans le Seigneur Jésus.

Your Excellency,

“Jesus will be in agony even to the end of the world; we must not sleep during that time” (Blaise Pascal, Pensées, 553). Pascal’s phrase reminds us of the mystery of the Redeemer’s struggle and suffering, which the liturgical year celebrates and makes present in a special way through Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum. It is an affirmation that also underlines the fact that Christ identifies himself with the agony and suffering of those who in history seem to know nothing but an interminable Good Friday: people tried by solitude, by war and by hunger, by rejection and abandonment.

Pope Francis’ prayer at the end of the Way of the Cross in the Colosseum on 19 April 2019 reviews the evils and pains of the world and places them beside the Cross of Jesus: “The cross of those who hunger for bread and for love; the cross of those who are alone and abandoned, even by their own children and relatives; the cross of those who thirst for justice and peace; the cross of the elderly who bear the weight of the years and of solitude; the cross of migrants who find doors closed due to fear, and hearts armoured by political calculations; the cross of the little ones, wounded in their innocence and their purity; the cross of humanity that wanders in the darkness of uncertainty and in the obscurity of the culture of the momentary”. It concludes, “Lord Jesus, revive in us the hope of the resurrection and of your definitive victory against every evil and every death”.

The Holy Land is the physical place where Jesus lived this agony and this suffering, transforming it into redemptive action thanks to an infinite love. At Gethsemane, this land receives the drops of blood that he sweats. In the upper room, he anticipates the offering of himself that he will make on the cross through the gift of the Eucharist, but also through the washing of feet and the precept of brotherly love. Along the Via Dolorosa, we can still imagine the places of the double trial and condemnation of Jesus. We can see him as he walks the road carrying the cross, helped by Simon of Cyrene, until he reaches Golgotha to be crucified. He entrusts us to Mary, hands himself over to the Father, dies and is placed in a new and empty sepulcher from which he will rise on the third day.

The Holy Land and especially the Christian community that lives there has always occupied an important place in the heart of the universal Church which – as St. Paul recalls – when it expresses its solidarity with Jerusalem, including through economic support, performs an act of restitution. Indeed, the whole Church has received from Jerusalem the gift and joy of the Gospel and of salvation in Christ Jesus “who, though he was rich, made himself poor for you, so that you could become rich through his poverty” (2 Cor 8:9). It is awareness of the gift received that still motivates us to give with joy and generosity, in fidelity to the Church’s earnest request to all her children.

You know well what severe trials the Church in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East has endured over the centuries. Those trials are not yet finished: the tragedy of the progressive reduction of the number of local faithful continues, with the consequent risk of seeing the various Christian traditions that date back to the early centuries disappear. Long and exhausting wars continue to produce millions of refugees and strongly influence the future of entire generations. They see themselves deprived of the most basic goods such as the right to a peaceful childhood, to a harmonious school education, to dedicating one’s youth to looking for a job and forming a family, to discovering one’s vocation, to an industrious and dignified adult life, and to a peaceful old age.

The Church continues to work to safeguard the Christian presence and to give voice to the voiceless. She certainly does so on the pastoral and liturgical level, which is fundamental for the life of our small communities. She also continues to work seriously to provide quality education through schools, which are fundamental for safeguarding Christian identity and for building fraternal coexistence especially with Muslims, according to the indications contained in the “Abu Dhabi Declaration”. Thanks to the generosity of the faithful around the world, the Church continues to make accommodation available to young people who wish to form a new family, as well as to facilitate their search for employment. Likewise, she continues to provide concrete material assistance where there are forms of endemic poverty, such as health needs and humanitarian emergencies linked to the flow of refugees and foreign migrant workers.

The care of the Sanctuaries, which would be impossible without the collection pro Terra Sancta, is also of fundamental importance, both because they preserve the memory of divine revelation, the mystery of the Incarnation and our Redemption; and because in those places the local Christian community finds the foundations of its identity. Around the sanctuaries and thanks to their presence, many of the Christian faithful find dignified work as they welcome the millions of pilgrims who in recent years have come, in ever increasing numbers, to visit the Holy Places.

To Your Excellency, to the priests, to the consecrated men and women, and to the faithful who strive for the success of the Collection, I have the joy of transmitting the deep gratitude of the Holy Father, Pope Francis.

Finally, as I invoke abundant divine blessings on your diocese, I offer my most fraternal greeting in the Lord Jesus.

Exzellenz,

Jesus wird bis zum Ende der Welt in Agonie sein; in dieser Zeit sollte man nicht schlafen (Blaise Pascal, Gedanken, 553). Pascals Äußerung erinnert uns an das Mysterium des Kampfes unseres Erlösers und seines Leidens, das wir im liturgischen Jahr und insbesondere in der Karwoche und während des Heiligen Triduums feiern und vergegenwärtigen. Diese Feststellung unterstreicht zugleich die Tatsache, dass Christus sich mit der Agonie und dem Leiden derer identifiziert, die in ihrer eigenen Geschichte nichts als einen endlosen Karfreitag zu kennen scheinen: Menschen, die eine harte Prüfung erleben durch Einsamkeit, Krieg und Hunger, durch Ablehnung und Verlassensein.

In dem Gebet, das Papst Franziskus am Ende des Kreuzwegs im Kolosseum am 19. April 2019 gesprochen hat, ruft er die Übel und die Schmerzen der Welt in Erinnerung und stellt sie dem Kreuz Jesu zur Seite: Das Kreuz derer, die nach Brot und Liebe hungern; das Kreuz einsamer Menschen, die selbst von ihren Kindern und Verwandten verlassen wurden; das Kreuz derjenigen, die nach Gerechtigkeit und Frieden dürsten; das Kreuz derer, die nicht den Trost des Glaubens haben; das Kreuz der alten Menschen, die unter der Last des Alters und und der Einsamkeit ächzen; das Kreuz der Migranten, die vor verschlossenen Türen stehen aufgrund der Furcht der Menschen und der durch politisches Kalkül verbarrikadierten Herzen; das Kreuz der Kleinen, die verletzt wurden in ihrer Unschuld und Reinheit; das Kreuz der Menschheit, die herumirrt in der Dunkelheit der Ungewissheit und einer Kultur, die alles sofort haben möchte, ohne dass etwas bleiben würde. Und er beschließt das Gebet mit folgenden Worten: Herr Jesus, belebe in uns die Hoffnung auf die Auferstehung und Deinen endgültigen Sieg gegen alles Böse und den Tod.

Das Heilige Land ist der reale Ort, an dem Jesus diese Qual und Leiden durchlebt und dank einer unendlichen Liebe in Erlösungshandeln verwandelt hat. In Gethsemane tut er dies, bis er Blut schwitzt. Im Abendmahlssaal nimmt er seine Selbsthingabe am Kreuz vorweg durch die Gabe der Eucharistie, aber auch durch die Fußwaschung und das Gebot der brüderlichen Liebe. Entlang der Via Dolorosa können wir uns die Orte des zweifachen Prozesses und der Verurteilung Jesu vorstellen. Wir können sehen, wie er sich mit dem Kreuz auf der Straße dahinschleppt, wie ihm von Cyrenäus geholfen wird, wie er Golgota erreicht, wie er uns Maria anvertraut, wie er sich in die Hände des Vaters gibt und wie er stirbt und in ein neues Grab gelegt wird, aus dem er am dritten Tage auferstehen wird.

Das Heilige Land und insbesondere die dort ansässige christliche Gemeinschaft haben immer einen wichtigen und besonderen Platz im Herzen der Universalkirche eingenommen. Der Heilige Paulus erinnert daran, dass diese nur etwas zurückgibt, wenn sie sich zur Solidarität mit Jerusalem – auch in wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht – verpflichtet. Von Jerusalem hat die ganze Kirche nämlich die Gabe und die Freude des Evangeliums und des Heils in Christus Jesus empfangen. Er, der reich war, wurde euretwegen arm, um euch durch seine Armut reich zu machen. (2 Kor 8,9). Und es ist das Bewusstsein, dass wir beschenkt wurden, das uns weiterhin dazu motiviert, mit Freude und Großzügigkeit zu geben.

Sie wissen um die schweren Prüfungen, die die Kirche, die im Heiligen Land und im ganzen Nahen Osten lebt, im Laufe der Jahrhunderte durchlitten hat. Diese Prüfungen sind noch nicht abgeschlossen: Die Tragödie des kontinuierlichen und fortschreitenden Schrumpfens der Zahl der Gläubigen vor Ort mit der daraus resultierenden Gefahr, dass die verschiedenen christlichen Traditionen, die bis in die frühen Jahrhunderte zurückreichen, verschwinden. Lange und verheerende Kriege haben Millionen von Flüchtlingen hervorgebracht. Diese Kriege beeinträchtigen die Zukunft ganzer Generationen. Ihnen werden grundlegendste Güter vorenthalten, wie das Recht auf eine friedliche Kindheit, auf eine ordentliche Schulbildung und auf eine Jugend, in der sie sich eine Arbeit zum Lebensunterhalt erwählen können, das Recht auf die Bildung einer Familie, auf eine eigenen Berufung, die entdeckt werden will, das Recht auf ein Erwachsenenleben in Würde und mit Beschäftigung und das Recht auf ein friedliches Alter.

Die Kirche setzt sich weiter dafür ein, die christliche Präsenz zu sichern und denjenigen eine Stimme zu geben, die keine haben. Dies tut sie in jedem Fall in pastoraler und liturgischer Hinsicht, denn das ist für das Leben unserer kleinen Gemeinschaften von grundlegender Bedeutung. Aber die Kirche setzt sich darüberhinaus auch weiterhin für eine qualitativ hochwertige Bildung ein in den Schulen, die gemäß der Erklärung von Abu Dhabi fundamental sind für die Bewahrung der christlichen Identität und für den Aufbau eines brüderlichen Zusammenlebens insbesondere mit Muslimen. Die Kirche setzt sich dank der Großzügigkeit der Gläubigen aus der ganzen Welt dafür ein, jungen Menschen, die eine neue Familie gründen möchten, ein Zuhause anzubieten und Arbeitsplätze für sie zu schaffen. Und außerdem leistet sie konkrete materielle Hilfe, wenn es um Formen endemischer Armut, um Bedürfnisse im Gesundheitssektor und um humanitäre Notfälle geht, die mit dem Zustrom von Flüchtlingen und ausländischen Arbeitsmigranten zusammenhängen.

Auch der Unterhalt der Wallfahrtsstätten, die ohne die Heilig-Land-Kollekte nicht möglich wäre, ist von grundlegender Bedeutung, sowohl weil es sich um die konkreten Orte handelt, an denen die Erinnerung an die göttliche Offenbarung, an das Geheimnis der Inkarnation und unserer Erlösung bewahrt wird; als auch weil die örtliche christliche Gemeinde an diesen Orten das Fundament ihrer Identität findet. An den Heiligtümern, die es dort gibt, finden viele der dortigen Christen eine würdevolle Arbeit, indem sie die Millionen von Pilgern willkommen heißen, die in den letzten Jahren immer zahlreicher die heiligen Stätten besuchen.

Ich freue mich Ihnen, den Priestern, den Ordensleuten und den Gläubigen, die sich für den Erfolg der Kollekte einsetzen – ein Werk, das die Kirche alle ihren Kindern nach den bekannten Modalitäten durchzuführen bittet – den lebendigen Dank des Heiligen Vaters Franziskus übermitteln zu dürfen. Auf ihr Bistum rufe ich den reichen Segen des Himmels herab und grüße Sie brüderlich im Herrn Jesus Christus.

La frase de Pascal nos recuerda el misterio de la lucha y del sufrimiento del Redentor, que precisamente el año litúrgico y de modo especial la Semana Santa y el Triduo Sacro nos hacen celebrar y actualizar. Pero es una afirmación que subraya también el hecho de que Cristo se identifica con la agonía y el sufrimiento de quienes en la historia parecen no conocer sino un interminable Viernes Santo: las personas afligidas por la soledad, la guerra y el hambre, por el rechazo y el abandono.

El Papa Francisco en la oración pronunciada al final del vía crucis en el Coliseo, el 19 de abril de 2019, fijando la mirada en los males y dolores del mundo, pone esas cruces en la Cruz de Jesús: «la cruz de las personas hambrientas de pan y de amor; la cruz de las personas solas y abandonadas incluso por sus propios hijos y parientes; la cruz de los pueblos sedientos de justicia y paz; la cruz de las personas que no tienen el consuelo de la fe; la cruz de los ancianos que se arrastran bajo el peso de los años y de la soledad; la cruz de los migrantes que encuentran puertas cerradas por miedo y corazones blindados por cálculos políticos; la cruz de los pequeños, heridos en su inocencia y en su pureza; la cruz de la humanidad que vaga en la oscuridad de la incertidumbre y en la oscuridad de la cultura de lo momentáneo». Y concluye: «Señor Jesús, reaviva en nosotros la esperanza de la resurrección y de tu victoria definitiva contra todo mal y toda muerte».

La Tierra Santa es el lugar físico en el que Jesús ha vivido esta agonía y este sufrimiento transformándolos en acción redentora gracias a un amor infinito. En Getsemaní lo hace hasta sudar sangre. En el Cenáculo, la ofrenda de sí mismo que realizará en la Cruz, la anticipa a través del don de la Eucaristía, pero también a través del lavado de los pies y del mandamiento del amor fraterno. A lo largo de la Vía Dolorosa aún podemos imaginar los lugares del doble proceso y de la condena de Jesús. Podemos verle mientras recorre el camino llevando la Cruz ayudado por el Cirineo, y llegar al Gólgota para ser clavado, y entregarse en las manos del Padre confiandonos a María, y morir colocado en un sepulcro nuevo y vacío de donde resucitará al tercer día.

La Tierra Santa, y de modo particular la comunidad cristiana que allí reside, siempre ha ocupado un lugar importante y especial en el corazón de la Iglesia universal. Esta –como recuerda San Pablo–, en el momento en que se empeña en expresar su solidaridad, también económica, con Jerusalén, cumple un acto de restitución: de Jerusalén, en efecto, toda la Iglesia ha recibido el don y la alegría del Evangelio y de la salvación en «Jesucristo, que, siendo rico, se hizo pobre por amor nuestro, para que vosotros fueseis ricos por su pobreza» (2 Cor, 8,9). Y es la conciencia del don recibido la que mueve de nuevo a dar con alegría y generosidad.

Bien saben ustedes lo duras que han sido las pruebas sufridas a lo largo de los siglos por la Iglesia que vive en Tierra Santa y en todo el Medio Oriente. Esas pruebas aún no han terminado, como lo muestra la tragedia de la continua y progresiva reducción del número de fieles locales, con el consiguiente riesgo de ver desaparecer las diversas tradiciones cristianas que vienen de los primeros siglos. Largas y destructivas guerras han producido y continúan produciendo millones de refugiados y condicionan fuertemente el futuro de enteras generaciones, que se ven privadas de los bienes más elementales, como el derecho a una paz justa, a una infancia tranquila, a una instrucción escolar orgánica, a una juventud dedicada a la búsqueda de un trabajo, a la formación de una familia, al descubrimiento de la propia vocación, a una vida adulta fructífera y digna, a una vejez serena.

La Iglesia sigue trabajando por la salvaguardia de la presencia cristiana y por dar voz a quien no la tiene. Lo hace, ciertamente, en el campo pastoral y litúrgico, que es fundamental para la vida de nuestras pequeñas comunidades. Pero continúa también, en modo serio, en su empeño por garantizar una educación de calidad a través de las escuelas, que son fundamentales para conservar la identidad cristiana y para construir una convivencia fraterna, especialmente con los musulmanes, según las indicaciones contenidas en la “Declaración de Abu Dabi”. Gracias a la generosidad de los fieles de todo el mundo, la Iglesia continúa poniendo una casa a disposición de los jóvenes que quieren formar una nueva familia y continúa creando oportunidades de trabajo. Sigue dando también una ayuda material concreta allí donde se presentan formas de pobreza endémica, o bien, necesidades sanitarias y emergencias humanitarias unidas a los flujos de refugiados y de trabajadores migrantes extranjeros.

También el cuidado de los Santuarios, que resultaría imposible sin la Colecta “pro Terra Sancta”, es de fundamental importancia, tanto porque estos son el lugar material que conserva la memoria de la divina revelación, del misterio de la encarnación y de nuestra redención, como también porque en esos lugares la comunidad cristiana local encuentra los fundamentos de su propia identidad. En torno a los santuarios y gracias a su presencia, encuentran un trabajo digno muchos de los fieles cristianos dedicados a acoger a los millones de peregrinos que en estos últimos años llegan, cada vez más numerosos, para visitar los Santos Lugares.

A usted, a los sacerdotes, a los consagrados y a los fieles, que se esfuerzan por el buen resultado de la Colecta, con fidelidad a una obra que la Iglesia pide cumplir a todos sus hijos según las modalidades conocidas, tengo la alegría de transmitirles el vivo reconocimiento del Santo Padre Francisco. Y mientras invoco copiosas bendiciones divinas para esa Diócesis, les saludo fraternalmente en el Señor Jesús.

Quarta-feira de Cinzas

Excelência Reverendíssima

Jesus estará em agonia até ao fim do mundo; não dormamos durante este tempo (Blaise Pascal, Pensamentos, 553). A frase de Pascal faz-nos recordar o mistério de luta e de sofrimento do Redentor, que o próprio ano litúrgico e, em especial, a Semana Santa e Tríduo Pascal, nos fazem celebrar e actualizar. Contudo, é uma afirmação que, também, destaca o facto de que Cristo se identifica com a agonia e o sofrimento daqueles que, na história, parece que não conhecem nada mais do que uma interminável Sexta-feira Santa: pessoas que vivem na solidão, na guerra e na fome, rejeitadas e abandonadas.

O Papa Francisco na oração pronunciada no final da Via-Sacra, no Coliseu, em 19 de Abril do ano passado, faz a leitura dos males e dores do mundo colocando-os ao lado da cruz de Jesus: a cruz das pessoas afamadas de pão e de amor; a cruz das pessoas sós e abandonadas, até dos próprios filhos e parentes; a cruz das pessoas sequiosas de justiça e paz; a cruz das pessoas que não têm o conforto da fé; a cruz dos anciãos que se arrastam sob o peso dos anos e da solidão; a cruz dos imigrantes que encontram a porta fechada por causa do medo e dos corações blindados do calculismo dos políticos; a cruz dos pequenos, feridos na sua inocência e na sua pureza; a cruz da humanidade que vaga no escuro da incerteza e na obscuridade da cultura do momento. Conclui: Senhor Jesus, reaviva em nós a esperança da ressurreição e da Tua definitiva vitória contra cada mal e cada morte.

A Terra Santa é a terra na qual Jesus viveu esta agonia e este sofrimento transformando-o em acção redentora graças a um amor infinito. No Getsémani fá-lo até suar sangue. No Cenáculo antecipa a oferta de si mesmo que fará sobre a cruz através do dom da Eucaristia e, ainda, no lava-pés e no preceito do amor fraterno. Ao longo da Via Dolorosa podemos imaginar os lugares do duplo processo e condenação de Jesus. Podemos vê-Lo enquanto percorre a estrada carregando com a cruz sendo ajudado por Cireneu, até alcançar o Gólgota onde foi pregado, Se confia a Maria, entrega-Se nas mãos do Pai e morrendo, é depositado num sepulcro novo e vazio do qual ressuscitará ao terceiro dia.

A Terra Santa, e de modo particular a comunidade cristã que ali reside, teve sempre um lugar importante e especial no coração da Igreja Universal que - como recorda São Paulo - no momento no qual se empenha a exprimir a própria solidariedade, também económica, com Jerusalém, cumpre um acto de restituição: de Jerusalém toda a Igreja recebeu o dom e a alegria do Evangelho e da Salvação em Cristo Jesus que, de rico que era, se fez pobre para nós, para que nos tornássemos ricos por meio da sua pobreza (2 Cor 7,9). A consciência do dom recebido motiva, ainda, a dar com alegria e generosidade.

Vós bem sabeis quantas duras provas experimentou, ao longo dos séculos, a Igreja que vive na Terra Santa e em todo o Médio Oriente. Provas essas que continuam: a tragédia da contínua e progressiva redução do número dos fiéis locais, com o consequente risco de ver desaparecer as diversas tradições cristãs que remontam aos primeiros séculos. Longas e desgastantes guerras produziram e continuam a causar milhões de refugiados condicionando, fortemente, o futuro de inteiras gerações, as quais se vêem privadas dos bens mais elementares como o direito a uma infância serena, a uma instrução escolástica organizada, a uma juventude dedicada à procura de um trabalho, à formação de uma família, à descoberta da própria vocação, a uma vida adulta produtiva, digna e a uma terceira idade serena.

A Igreja continua a trabalhar na salvaguarda da presença cristã e no dar voz a quem não a tem. Esta salvaguarda faz-se no âmbito da pastoral e da liturgia, que é fundamental para a vida das nossas pequenas comunidades. Continua, pois, a empenhar-se, de modo sério, a prover a uma educação de qualidade através de escolas, que são fundamentais para a salvaguarda da identidade cristã, e para construir uma convivência fraterna, especialmente com os muçulmanos, segundo as indicações contidas na Declaração de Abu Dhabi. A Igreja continua, graças à generosidade dos fiéis de todo o mundo, a colocar à disposição casas para os jovens que desejam formar uma nova família, como também, a criar oportunidades de trabalho. Provê ainda, a uma ajuda material concreta aos lugares onde existe a pobreza continuada, como também, às necessidades sanitárias e emergência humanitária ligada ao fluxo de refugiados e de trabalhadores migrantes estrangeiros.

Há, ainda, o cuidado pelos Santuários, que seria impossível manter sem a colecta feita para a Terra Santa e que é de importância fundamental, seja porque esses são os lugares que conservam a memória da revelação divina, do mistério da Incarnação e da nossa Redenção; seja porque naqueles lugares a comunidade cristã local encontra o fundamento da sua própria identidade. À volta dos santuários, e graças à sua presença, encontram um trabalho digno muitos fiéis cristãos empenhados em acolher os milhões de peregrinos, que nestes últimos anos ali se deslocam, cada vez mais numerosos, para visitar os Lugares Santos.

A Vossa Reverência, aos Sacerdotes, aos Religiosos e aos Fiéis que se empenham numa Colecta proveitosa, em fidelidade a uma obra que a Igreja pede cumprimento a todos os seus filhos segundo os modos referidos, tenho a alegria de transmitir-lhe o vivo reconhecimento do Santo Padre Francisco. Enquanto invoco copiosas bênçãos divinas para a sua Diocese, apresento-lhe uma viva saudação fraternal no Senhor Jesus.

CONGREGAZIONE PER LE CHIESE ORIENTALI
Anno 2019

Introduzione

La “Colletta per la Terra Santa” nasce dalla volontà dei Papi di mantenere forte il legame tra tutti i Cristiani del mondo e i Luoghi Santi. Essa tradizionalmente raccolta nella giornata del Venerdì Santo, è la fonte principale per il sostentamento della vita che si svolge intorno ai Luoghi Santi; è anche lo strumento che la Chiesa si è data per mettersi a fianco delle comunità ecclesiali del Medio Oriente. Nei tempi più recenti, Papa Paolo VI, attraverso l’Esortazione Apostolica ‘Nobis in Animo’ (25 marzo 1974), diede una spinta decisiva in favore della Terra Santa.

La Custodia Francescana attraverso la Colletta può sostenere e portare avanti l’importante missione a cui è chiamata: custodire i Luoghi Santi, le pietre della memoria, e favorire la presenza cristiana, le pietre vive di Terra Santa, attraverso tante attività di solidarietà, come ad esempio il mantenimento delle strutture pastorali, educative, assistenziali, sanitarie e sociali.

I territori che beneficiano sotto diverse forme di un sostegno proveniente dalla Colletta sono i seguenti: Gerusalemme, Palestina, Israele, Giordania, Cipro, Siria, Libano, Egitto, Etiopia, Eritrea, Turchia, Iran e Iraq.

Di norma, la Custodia di Terra Santa riceve il 65% della Colletta, mentre il restante 35% va alla Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali, che lo utilizza per la formazione dei candidati al sacerdozio, il sostentamento del clero, l’attività scolastica, la formazione culturale e i sussidi alle diverse circoscrizioni ecclesiastiche in Medio Oriente.

Formazione Accademica, Spirituale e Umana dei Seminaristi e Sacerdoti delle Chiese poste sotto la giurisdizione della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali

Grazie alla Colletta si può provvedere a devolvere contributi ai seminari, alle case di formazione religiosa e istituzioni culturali nei territori di competenza, sostenendo sotto varie forme (borse di studio, tasse universitarie e ogni altra necessità sanitaria) anche a Roma, giovani seminaristi e sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose e, compatibilmente con i fondi disponibili, alcuni laici. Il nuovo collegio aperto quattro anni fa per ospitare le religiose che provengono da diversi paesi orientali, accoglie quest’anno 32 studentesse. Sono circa 300 gli studenti, che beneficiano della borsa di studio, ospiti in 7 collegi di competenza del Dicastero.

Inoltre, il Dicastero contribuisce al sostentamento del Pontificio Istituto Orientale, istituzione accademica superiore con due facoltà, Scienze Ecclesiastiche Orientali e Diritto Canonico Orientale, di cui è Gran Cancelliere il Cardinale Prefetto.

Sussidi per l’attività Scolastica

La Diocesi Patriarcale di Gerusalemme, la Custodia Francescana, le Chiese Orientali della Terra Santa e gli Istituti Religiosi sono impegnati per la formazione scolastica dei giovani della Terra Santa. Tenute presenti le particolari circostanze in cui versano gli studenti cristiani e preso in considerazione l’arrivo di migliaia di ragazzi in età scolare dalla Siria e Iraq in Terra Santa, la Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali ha deciso di aumentare la somma dei sussidi anche per l’anno accademico in corso.

È notevole anche l’operato del Segretariato di Solidarietà nel coordinamento e distribuzione dei sussidi alle istituzioni scolastiche gestite dalle summenzionate istituzioni.

Una tra le prestigiose fondazioni che assicura la formazione accademica è la Bethlehem University. Quasi 3300 giovani, la maggior parte palestinesi musulmani, vengono formati intellettualmente e umanamente con la speranza di impegnarsi nella costruzione di un Paese dove regni rispetto reciproco e dove sia preservata la dignità umana. È apprezzabile l’impegno dei Fratelli de La Salle nella conduzione dell’Università.

Sussidi Ordinari e Straordinari

Questa Congregazione contribuisce a sostenere le Chiese poste sotto la sua competenza, con sussidi, attinti dalla Colletta Terra Santa.

Il Medio Oriente continua a vivere nell’instabilità e tensione. Quelli che non hanno cibo, quelli che non hanno cure mediche, che non hanno scuola, gli orfani, i feriti e le vedove si fanno sentire. La Congregazione riserva una particolare attenzione alle necessità di queste persone e compie le opere di ristrutturazione attraverso le diocesi orientali e latine del luogo e anche sollecitando le Agenzie Cattoliche impegnate nei suddetti paesi. Assicurare i mezzi necessari per una vita dignitosa a chi rientra in Iraq e Siria e a chi è rifugiato nei paesi limitrofi, come Libano e Giordania richiede la collaborazione di tutte le persone di buona volontà. Inoltre, si provvede anche a favorire l’attività culturale, spirituale e psicologica che in qualche modo fanno avvicinare le persone, nonostante le differenze religiose ed etniche.

Conclusione

La generosità dei fedeli cattolici, espressa dalla Colletta, verso i loro fratelli e sorelle del Medio Oriente può risolvere tanti problemi, ma la preghiera e il sostegno morale sono ancora più necessarie. Si invita pertanto ad “adottare” anche se non ne conosci il nome, un cristiano del Medio Oriente, e pregando per lui/lei durante tutto l’anno 2020. Come ha detto Papa Francesco durante l’udienza concessa ai Partecipanti della Riunione Opere Aiuto Chiese Orientali (ROACO) del giugno 2019 il “grido di molti che in questi anni sono stati derubati della speranza” deve arrivare al nostro orecchio per aprire il nostro cuore per essere solidali con loro, “manifestando il volto della Chiesa e contribuendo a renderla viva, in particolare alimentando la speranza per le giovani generazioni”.

CONGREGATION FOR THE EASTERN CHURCHES
2019 A.D.

Introduction

The “Collection for the Holy Land” was born from the desire of the Popes to maintain a strong link between all the faithful and the Holy Places, and given a decisive boost by Saint Paul VI through the Apostolic Exhortation ‘Nobis in Animo’ (March 25, 1974). It is an instrument that the Church provides her children in other parts of the world to express solidarity with the ecclesial communities of the Middle East.

The funds traditionally collected on Good Friday are the main source of material support for Christian life in the Holy Land. The Franciscan Custody uses the Collection to carry out its important mission of preserving the Sacred Places, the stones of memory, and promoting the Christian presence, the living stones, through many pastoral, educational, welfare, health and social structures.

The territories that benefit in various forms of support from the Collection are Jerusalem, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

As a rule, the Custody of the Holy Land receives 65% of the Collection, while the remaining 35% goes to the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, which uses it for the formation of candidates for the priesthood, the support of the clergy, educational activities, cultural formation and subsidies to the various ecclesiastical circumscriptions in the Middle East.

Academic, Spiritual and Human Formation of the Seminarians and Priests of the Churches under the Jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches

Thanks to the Collection, contributions can be made to seminaries, religious houses of formation and cultural institutions in the territories of competence, supporting in various forms (scholarships, university fees and health needs) young seminarians and priests, men and women religious and, depending on the funds available, and some lay people. About 300 students benefiting from scholarships are hosted in 7 colleges under the jurisdiction of the Dicastery in Rome. A new college that opened four years ago for nuns from different Eastern countries welcomes 32 female students this year.

In addition, the Dicastery contributes to the sustenance of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, a higher academic institution with two faculties, Eastern Ecclesiastical Sciences and Eastern Canon Law, of which the Cardinal Prefect is Grand Chancellor.

Subsidies for Educational Activities

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Custody of the Holy Land, the Eastern Catholic Churches of the Holy Land and Religious Institutes are committed to the education of young people in the Holy Land. Keeping in mind the particular circumstances faced by Christian students and taking into account the arrival into the Holy Land of thousands of school-aged children from Syria and Iraq, the Congregation for the Eastern Churches has decided to increase the subsidies also for the current academic year.

The work of the Secretariat of Solidarity in the coordination and distribution of subsidies to educational institutions managed by the aforementioned institutions is also noteworthy.

One of the prestigious Institutions that ensures academic formation is Bethlehem University. Almost 3,300 young people, mostly Palestinian Muslims, are trained intellectually and humanly with the hope of engaging in the construction of a country where mutual respect reigns and where human dignity is preserved. The commitment of the De La Salle Brothers in running the university is much appreciated.

Ordinary and Extraordinary Subsidies

This Congregation contributes to supporting the Churches placed under its competence with subsidies drawn from the Holy Land Collection.

The Middle East continues to live in instability and tension. Those who have no food, medical treatment or school make themselves heard, as do the orphans, the widowed and the wounded. The Congregation pays particular attention to the needs of these people and works to rebuild social structures through the local Eastern and Latin Dioceses, as well as by coordinating the Catholic agencies involved in the aforementioned countries. Ensuring the means necessary for a dignified life for those returning to Iraq and Syria and for refugees in neighboring countries, such as Lebanon and Jordan, requires the collaboration of all people of good will. Furthermore, cultural, spiritual and psychological activities are encouraged that in various ways bring people closer, despite religious and ethnic differences.

Conclusion

The generosity that the Catholic faithful express towards their brothers and sisters in the Middle East though the Collection can solve many problems, but prayer and moral support are even more necessary. We therefore invite you to “adopt” a Christian from the Middle East, even if you do not know his/her name, and pray for him/her throughout the year 2020. As Pope Francis said during the audience granted to the participants of the Reunion of Aid Agencies for the Eastern Churches (ROACO) of June 2019, “the cry of many who in recent years have been robbed of hope” must reach our ears and open our hearts to solidarity with them, “manifesting the face of the Church and helping to make it alive, in particular by fueling hope for the younger generations”.

La Custodia di Terra Santa, da secoli si impegna nella conservazione e la rivitalizzazione dei luoghi santi del cristianesimo nella Terra di Gesù e in tutto il Medio Oriente. Tra i vari obiettivi della missione francescana, si ricordano il sostegno e lo sviluppo della minoranza cristiana che vi abita, la conservazione e valorizzazione di aree archeologiche e santuari, l’intervento nei casi di emergenza, la liturgia nei luoghi di culto, le opere apostoliche e l’assistenza ai pellegrini. Anche per il biennio 2018/2019, la presenza francescana in Terra Santa, si è manifestata attraverso la progettazione, programmazione e l’esecuzione dei seguenti progetti e opere:

Le opere elencate sono state realizzate grazie a vari tipi di contributi economici, in primo luogo la Colletta del Venerdì Santo, poi le attività di fund raising della Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) e Associazione pro Terra Sancta (ATS), ma anche di altri donatori privati e istituzionali, così come dagli introiti delle attività svolte.

I. Opere rivolte ai pellegrini

Ain Karem: santuario della nascita di San Giovanni

In fase di completamento i lavori di rifacimento della copertura della chiesa di San Giovanni Battista che comprendono il consolidamento delle volte in pietra.

In fase di progettazione i lavori di restauro della chiesa che soffre seri problemi statici.

Di imminente realizzazione lo scavo archeologico interno alla chiesa e il restauro della sacrestia.

Completato l’allestimento della grande sala crociata per permettere il culto durante i lavori della chiesa.

Completata la ristrutturazione dei locali affianco la sacrestia per la realizzazione del nuovo parlatorio.

Ain Karem: santuario di San Giovanni nel Deserto

In corso di realizzazione gli interventi di manutenzione generale per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini.

Beit Sahour: Campo dei Pastori

In corso di progettazione gli interventi per la conservazione e lo sviluppo del sito, un ampio intervento che comprenderà nuove cappelle esterne per le celebrazioni, la riqualificazione della grotta, nuovi servizi igienici e infrastrutture.

Betania: santuario di Casa di Marta, Maria e Lazzaro

In corso il restauro e valorizzazione dei resti bizantini e medievali del convento di Betania attraverso: recupero delle aree degradate; formazione e impiego di 10 giovani palestinesi al restauro; sostegno alle attività imprenditoriali della locale associazione femminile; progetto didattico con le scuole primarie per la conoscenza dei siti religiosi e archeologici locali (sostenuto da ATS).

Betlemme: basilica della Natività

Collaborazione con le altre comunità ecclesiali presenti e l’Autonomia Nazionale Palestinese per il restauro della basilica della Natività.

In corso la realizzazione delle nuove panche per il presbiterio di Santa Caterina.

Rifacimento della facciata del convento.

Betlemme: santuario della Grotta del Latte

Rifacimento dell’impermeabilizzazione del complesso e sistemazione delle aree esterne per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini.

Betlemme: Casa Nova, casa di accoglienza per pellegrini

Conclusione del rinnovo di tutte le 66 le stanze, il refettorio, i corridoi e le scale della Casa Nova.

Sostituzione dei due ascensori per i pellegrini.

Cafarnao: santuario della Promessa eucaristica

Completati i lavori nei locali per l’accoglienza di gruppi di pellegrini giovani e/o in economia.

Rinnovo degli impianti di climatizzazione e di acqua calda sanitaria dell’intero convento, con adozione di sistemi moderni a basso consumo.

Emmaus Qubeibeh: santuario dei santi Simeone e Cleopa

Rinnovo di alcuni ambienti del convento per accogliere la comunità inter-obbedienziale.

Gerico: santuario del Buon Pastore

Restauro dello stadio della scuola.

Creazione di 10 nuovi bagni.

Creazione di un palco per le varie attività della scuola.

Creazione di 4 nuove aule scolastiche (incluso dell’aria condizionata, dato che la temperatura a Gerico può raggiungere i 50° C).

Risistemazione della biblioteca scolastica.

Gerusalemme: basilica del Getsemani

In corso le rifiniture del tunnel e ascensori per i gruppi di pellegrini per collegare tramite percorso pedonale l’area della basilica e la Valle del Cedron.

Completato il rinnovo delle coperture degli eremi a disposizione per esperienze di romitaggio.

In corso di progettazione: centro servizi per i pellegrini nella Valle del Cedron.

Gerusalemme: basilica del Santo Sepolcro di nostro Signore

Realizzazione degli interventi di consolidamento strutturale della roccia della grotta dell’Invenzione della Santa Croce a seguito di indagini strumentali e analisi approfondite.

In corso di progettazione il restauro della cappella dell’Apparizione.

Sostituzione dell’ascensore del convento.

In fase di studio in collaborazione con l’Università La Sapienza (Roma) e il Centro di Restauri di Venaria (TO) il restauro del pavimento della Basilica e le infrastrutture (in accordo con Greci e Armeni).

Gerusalemme: Casa Nova, casa di accoglienza per pellegrini

Completato il rinnovo dei 2 locali acquistati recentemente ed ora impiegati per mostre di opere artigianali locale (madreperla e altro) e uno adibito a gelateria/caffetteria.

Rinnovo di un ufficio di direzione con mostra permanente di artigianato locale .

Gerusalemme: centro parrocchiale

In corso di progettazione il master plan per la sistemazione degli spazi del centro parrocchiale.

Conclusione del restaurante panoramico sulla terrazza dell’edificio.

Proseguimento nella realizzazione di cinque sale didattiche multimediali per i pellegrini dedicata alla conoscenza del Santo Sepolcro.

Realizzazione di un master plan di intervento per una migliore accoglienza di pellegrini e visitatori del santuario.

Gerusalemme: Terra Santa Museum

In corso gli interventi di consolidamento strutturale dei locali che completeranno l’area museale presso il santuario della Flagellazione.

In corso di realizzazione un moderno centro museale per la valorizzazione del patrimonio artistico, archeologico e culturale francescano. Nell’area di circa 2500 m² saranno compresi:

- Museo archeologico: I luoghi della Bibbia in Palestina (Convento della Flagellazione) (Terza fase);

- Museo storico: La Custodia Francescana di Terra Santa (Convento San Salvatore).

Monte Nebo (Giordania): memoriale di san Mosè

Completate le due nuove cappelle per favorire le celebrazioni dei pellegrini.

Progettazione di ambienti per accogliere pellegrini che desiderano fare tempi di ritiro.

Monte Tabor: basilica della Trasfigurazione

Completata la ristrutturazione totale di una cappella esterna per i pellegrini.

In corso di progettazione gli interventi generali per la conservazione del sito con creazione di un parcheggio interno al monastero, della strada di collegamento del parcheggio esterno con quello interno con marciapiede per disabili e dei servizi per i pellegrini.

Naim: santuario della risurrezione della figlia della vedova

In corso di progettazione gli interventi per la riapertura e lo sviluppo del sito.

Nazareth: basilica dell’Annunciazione a Maria Santissima

Lavori di restauro e manutenzione per la conservazione della Grotta sacra.

Rinnovo degli impianti di climatizzazione e di acqua calda sanitaria dell’intero convento, con adozione di sistemi moderni a basso consumo.

Ramleh: santuario di san Giuseppe di Arimatea

Completato il restauro del campanile del santuario e di alcune aule scolastiche.

Tabgha: santuario del Primato di san Pietro

Completata la rampa di accesso per i pellegrini disabili.

Casa per 27 bambini di cui 10 interni in difficoltà sociale.

Rinnovo del riscaldamento.

Borse di studio e sussidi

Finanziamento di 490 borse di studio universitario (225 dalla Custodia + 265 dalla FFHL) per la durata di 4 anni, distribuite nelle diverse università (Betlemme, Università ebraica, Bir Zeit, Amman); 178 sussidi per studenti in difficoltà.

Sostegno a imprese artigiane

Acquisto di pezzi di ricambio, apparecchiature per la produzione, ausili per la messa in sicurezza delle attività di 10 piccole attività artigiane.

Attività per le famiglie

Betlemme

Proseguono: i progetti a sostegno del consultorio familiare parrocchiale; il progetto rivolto a più di 20 ragazzi (età 6-12), provenienti da famiglie in difficoltà; assistenza medica per le famiglie in gravi difficoltà economiche; ristrutturazione delle case appartenenti alle famiglie più bisognose (sostenuto da FFHL).

Betlemme: Azione Cattolica

Manutenzione generale straordinaria dei bagni nell’area della piscina parrocchiale ad uso della popolazione locale .

Scuole

Amman

Lavoro di manutenzione ordinaria (rifacimento della cucina del kindergarten, dei bagni e della pulizia dei pavimenti della scuola elementare).

Creazione di un nuovo laboratorio per l’insegnamento della robotica presso l’asilo e la 1°, 2° e 3° classe elementare. Questo programma verrà esteso a tutto il collegio nei due prossimi anni.

Compra del programma educativo e-school che aiuta con mezzi moderni l’insegnamento (school managment system: che favorisce le comunicazioni tra scuola, genitori e allievi learning managment system che favorisce l’insegnamento interattivo tra docenti e allievi nella classe e a casa).

In corso il lavoro di ristrutturazione radicale del Peace Building costruito nel 1976.

Betlemme:

Proseguimento della risistemazione del campo di basket esterno della scuola e pittura generale del medesimo.

Creazione di sei aule per il ramo professionale (sartoria, falegnameria, laboratorio di elettricità, ramo di estetica e bellezza).

Cana:

In corso di realizzazione le opere per la costruzione di una nuova scuola (terminate le opere strutturali). Il complesso comprenderà anche il centro parrocchiale e un parcheggio coperto per un’area di 5000m^2.

Gerico

Istallazioni di lavagne luminose nelle aule scolastiche.

Costruzione di un palco per il teatro della scuola e di 4 nuove aule.

Creazione di un tendone per proteggere dal sole i ragazzi nei cortili.

Istallazione dell’aria condizionata nella scuola (la temperatura in estate sale fino a 50º C).

Creazione di una sala di computer per studenti.

Gerusalemme: Saint Joseph School (Giaffa Gate)

Completati i lavori di rinnovo dell’impianto elettrico.

In corso di realizzazione nuovi locali per strutture sportive al di sotto dell’ampio cortile della scuola, che ospiteranno una piscina, una palestra e campi da gioco sulla copertura dell’edificio. Questi locali saranno anche usati dalla gioventù della Città Vecchia.

Prosegue il rinnovo dei locali della scuola.

Gerusalemme: Scuola Helen Keller – Beth Hanina Terra Sancta Museum

Dopo l’apertura di una scuola materna due anni fa (80 alluni), proseguimento con l’apertura della prima sezione di una scuola elementare.

Appartamenti per i bisognosi e le giovani coppie

Gerusalemme

Città Vecchia. Continua il lavoro di ristrutturazione delle case della Città Vecchia con lo scopo di migliorare le condizioni di vita dei residenti: ristrutturazione completa di 7 abitazioni (4 nel 2015, 3 nel 2016, 7 nel 2018); ristrutturazione parziale di 6 abitazioni (2 nel 2015, 4 nel 2016, 5 nel 2017-18); ristrutturazione degli esterni (facciate, coperture, ecc) di 5 edifici.

Dar al Consul renovation project. In corso la ristrutturazione del complesso residenziale nella Città Vecchia, con 40 appartamenti e un piano terra in disuso. L’area del progetto è di circa 2500m^2.

o Classe A ristrutturazione con interventi maggiori per 14 abitazioni (in corso di cui 7 completati);

o Classe B ristrutturazione con interventi medi per 16 abitazioni (in corso di cui 10 completati);

o Classe C ristrutturazione con interventi minori per 10 abitazioni (in corso di cui 6 completati);

o Ristrutturazione esterni di 6 edifici (in corso di cui 4 completati).

Dar el Kbire: Progettazione dell’ampliamento dell’edificio di 300-400m² e dell’intervento migliorativo sulle 19 abitazioni esistenti (6 sono completate). L’area totale interessata dal progetto è di circa 2500m².

Tumian Palace: Progettazione dell’ampliamento dell’edificio con la realizzazione di 3 piani aggiuntivi e 800m² ad uso residenziale.

Abu Geries: Progettazione dell’ampliamento dell’edificio con la realizzazione di 750m² destinati a uffici, ristorazione e negozi.

Saint James housing project di Beit Hanina: ottenuto il permesso di costruzione per due piani aggiuntivi in ciascuno dei 6 edifici, per un totale di 24 appartamenti. In corso la progettazione esecutiva per la sopraelevazione.

Betfage (Monte degli Olivi): 10 nuovi appartamenti realizzati, un ampliamento di circa 750m² del complesso residenziale costituito da 10 edifici. Gli appartamenti sono stati completati e consegnati alle famiglie.

Pisgat Zeev housing project: Progettazione del nuovo complesso residenziale con 70-80 unità abitative e 300m² per uso commerciale.

Giaffa

The Franciscan Neighborhood: ottenuto il permesso di costruzione di 124 appartamenti destinati alle famiglie cristiane della parrocchia. L’area totale degli appartamenti sarà di circa 10.000m².

Nazareth

Karm el Sacheb housing Project: progetto per la realizzazione di un complesso residenziale (chiesa, locali per uso sociale, 80 appartamenti per giovani famiglie).

Altre opere culturali

Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Ogni anno la Custodia di Terra Santa sostiene economicamente la Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme. Offerte circa 30 borse di studio a studenti provenienti da diverse diocesi, per tutta la durata degli studi.

Christian Media Center. I servizi offerti comprendono: Website, completamente rinnovato, semplificato nell’uso ed ora mobile friendly; Terra Santa News notiziario settimanale che racconta fede, storia, attualità della Terra Santa; trasmesso da circa 35 emittenti nel mondo in 6 lingue; documentari su temi sociali e religiosi, in diverse lingue; diretta di celebrazioni liturgiche ed eventi.

Istituto di Musica Magnificat. Affiliato al Conservatorio di Vicenza il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale e internazionale. Accoglie più di 220 studenti cristiani, musulmani e ebrei, guidati da un 25 professori anche essi ebrei, cristiani e musulmani.

Formazione di 50 studenti francescani di paesi in via di sviluppo ai quali la Custodia garantisce vitto, alloggio e pagamento degli studi a Gerusalemme tra STJ e SBF.

Formazione di 72 giovani in formazione nella Custodia (dall’aspirandato agli studi specialistici).

III. Altre opere

È continuato e si è intensificato in Siria, Giordania e Libano l’aiuto alla popolazione siriana ed irachena, cristiani ma non solo, che vive una situazione di estrema necessità, attraverso la presenza dei Frati della Custodia di Terra Santa con il sostegno finanziario e la collaborazione soprattutto di ATS.

In Libano

Accoglienza e sostegno temporaneo per 14 famiglie irachene a Deir Mimas e oltre 47 nella zona di Harissa e Jounieh.

Aiuto scolastico per 28 bambini iracheni e giovani iracheni a Deir Mimas, oltre 35 nella zona di Harissa e quasi 65 a Jounieh. Aiuto a giovani siriani a Jounieh e Beirut in numero di 40.

In Siria

Aiuti attraverso le parrocchie di Aleppo, Damasco, Knayeh, Yakoubieh e Latakieh.

Centro di emergenza di Aleppo presso la parrocchia e il Terra Sancta College:

- distribuzione del pacco alimentare per 1200 famiglie al mese (50 € ognuno);

- assistenza sanitaria di emergenza (per una spesa mensile di 30 mila $), di visite mediche, analisi e medicine, interventi chirurgici, per i parrocchiani;

- partecipazione alle spese degli interventi chirurgicidi cristiani di tutti i Riti, in collaborazione con le loro Chiese;

- assistenza sanitaria per la gravidanza, il parto, e l’assistenza post-parto sia alla madre sia al figlio;

- cura di tutti i casi di sterilità in tutte le famiglie cristiane di tutti i Riti,

- cura per i bambini e la loro crescita sotto tutti i punti di vista:

+ bisogni primari di latte, pannolini ai bambini della parrocchia, con un sussidio mensile per ogni bambino,

+ centro di cura post-traumatico da guerra per bambini e ragazzi, cristiani e musulmani,

+ distribuzioni di vestiti, due volte all’anno a più di 1000 bambini…,

+ adozione di centri di catechismo e di oratori estivi nelle parrocchie più povere, da tutti i punti di vista,

+ oratorio estivo per più di 1300 bambini, adozione materiale, logistica e di contenuto a 6 oratori estivi di cinque parrocchie,

+ progetto di “dopo scuola” a favore di 60 bambini con dei limiti di comprensione…,

+ corso di inglese di prima qualità nella città, di diversi livellinellacittà a 65 bambini, bravi nello studio,

+ corso di “matematica mentale" per 77 bambini, bravi nello studio (novità 2019),

+ adozione dei bambini con dei talenti (lezioni private di pianoforte per 6 studenti);

- sostegno scolastico (somma mensile consegnata) agli studenti di scuole e di università, per gli studenti di Rito latino;

- riparazione / ricostruzione di case danneggiati (di tre diversi livelli di danni): siamo arrivati a ricostruire 1500 case fino ad oggi (a favore di tutti i cristiani di tutti i Riti);

- aiuto ad avviare piccole imprese e attività lavorative (1000 persone), a favore di tutti i cristiani di tutti i Riti);

- progetto per accogliere 120 soldati cristiani congedati dopo 8 anni di servizio militare obbligatorio: aiuto attraverso il creare di opportunità di lavoro per ognuno di loro (novità 2019),

- progetto di aiuto ai fidanzati cristiani, ortodossi e cattolici, detto: regalo di nozze (affitto di casa di un anno, occorrente elettrico, arredamento di una o due stanze, riparazione casa…);

- servizio gratuito di funerale e progetto per aiutare nel servizio di sepoltura e della compra della bara;

- Progetto di sostegno delle famiglie dei sacerdoti e dei loro famigliari poveri, per tutti i Riti cattolici e ortodossi.

Progetti di sostegno alla chiesa armeno-ortodossa (novità 2019)

- sostegno al clero con una somma mensile per ogni sacerdote, visto lo stipendio basso.

- aiuto logistico e materiale ai sacerdoti ortodossi per raccogliere i dati sulle famiglie, con dei tre impiegati nostri.

- adozione delle famiglie giovani povere con un pacco alimentare e assistenza sanitaria (in atto).

- adozione di centri di catechismo nuovi, visto che non hanno ancora.

Damasco (Bab Touma, Casa di Anania, Tabbale e Salhie):

- riparazione strutture danneggiate dai bombardamenti.

- aiuto famiglie e giovani poveri.

- medicine e interventi medici.

- bambini e studenti aiuto allo studio.

- ristrutturazione spazi interni piano terra parrocchia Bab Touma, per attività giovani.

- studio e ristrutturazione spazio per centro culturale parrocchiale per giovani alla Casa di Anania.

- aiuti accoglienza e sostegno ammalati.

- educazione, aiuto all'asilo bambini a Tabbale.

- centro per il trattamento post traumatico da guerra per bambini e ragazzi.

Latakieh:

- acquisto di un terreno per edificare un centro pastorale a servizio della comunità parrocchiale locale.

- distribuzione mensile di pacco alimentare a circa 300 famiglie.

- centro per il trattamento post traumatico da guerra per bambini e ragazzi.

Aiuti a rifugiati nei 3 villaggi di Knaye, Jacoubie e Sjeide

A Rodi - Kos

Aiuti in generi alimentari e di prima assistenza ai rifugiati che transitano per il centro di accoglienza temporanea di Rodi e quello di Kos.

Progetto di riparazione della chiesa parrocchiale, del cimitero e del convento dopo il terremoto.

IV. Stipendi ordinari della Custodia

Stipendi mensili di circa 1150 impiegati in Israele e Palestina divisi tra 15 scuole (60 % del numero totale degli impiegati), 4 Case Nove per pellegrini (20 % del numero degli impiegati), 80 santuari, 25 parrocchie e tante attività varie.

The Custody of the Holy Land, for centuries has been committed to the preservation and revitalization of the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and throughout the Middle East. Among the various objectives of the Franciscan mission, we recall the support and development of the Christian minority that lives there, the preservation and enhancement of archaeological areas and sanctuaries, intervention in emergencies, liturgy in places of worship, apostolic works and assistance to pilgrims. Also for the two-year period 2018/2019, the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land manifested itself through the planning, planning and execution of the following projects and works:

Completion of the large Crusader hall to allow worship during the ongoing restoration work in the church.

Beit Sahour: The Shepherds’ Fields

In the course of planning, the interventions for the conservation and development of the site, a broad intervention that will include new external chapels for celebrations, the redevelopment of the cave, new toilets and infrastructures.

Bethany: Sanctuary of the House of Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Ongoing restoration and enhancement of the Byzantine and medieval remains of the monastery at Bethany through: recovery of degraded areas; training and employment of 10 young Palestinians for restoration work; support for the entrepreneurial activities of the local women's association; educational project with primary schools to learn about local religious and archaeological sites (supported by ATS).

Bethlehem: Basilica of the Nativity

Collaboration with the other ecclesial communities present and the Palestinian National Authority for the restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity.

The construction of new benches for the sanctuary of St. Catherine’s church is underway.

Renovation of the monastery façade.

Bethlehem: Sanctuary of the Milk Grotto

Remodeling of the complex waterproofing and rearrangement of the external areas for the reception of pilgrims.

Bethlehem: Casa Nova, Home for pilgrims

Completion of the renovation of all 66 rooms, the dining-room, the corridors and the stairs of the Casa Nova.

Capernaum: Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Promise

Implementation of an intervention by a master plan for a better reception of pilgrims and visitors to the sanctuary.

Jerusalem: Terra Sancta Museum

Ongoing structural consolidation of the premises that will complete the museum area at the Sanctuary of the Flagellation.

A modern museum centre for the enhancement of the Franciscan artistic, archaeological and cultural heritage is under construction. In the area of about 2500 m2 will be included:

- Archaeological museum: The places of the Bible in Palestine (Monastery of the Flagellation) (Third phase);

- Historical Museum: The Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land (at the Monastery of St. Saviour).

Monte Nebo (Jordan): Memorial of St. Moses

Completion the two new chapels to encourage pilgrim celebrations.

A project of the environment to accommodate pilgrims who wish to make retreats.

Monte Thabor: Basilica of the Transfiguration

Completion of the renovation of an external chapel for pilgrims.

In course is the planning of general interventions for the preservation of the site with the creation of a parking area inside the monastery, with a connecting road to the external car park with the internal one having a sidewalk for the disabled and services for pilgrims.

Naim: Shrine of the Resurrection of the Widow's Daughter

Interventions for the opening and development of the site are being planned.

Nazareth: Basilica of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Restoration and maintenance work for the conservation of the sacred grotto.

Renewal of the air conditioning and hot water systems of the entire monastery, with the adoption of modern low-consumption systems.

Ramleh: Sanctuary of St. Joseph of Arimathea

Completion of the restoration of the bell tower of the sanctuary and of some classrooms.

Tabgha: Sanctuary of the Primacy of St. Peter

The access ramp for disabled pilgrims has been completed.

II. Works aimed at the local community

Works in favour of young people.

Bethlehem: Boys’ Home

Home for 27 children including 10 interns in social difficulty.

Renewal of heating system.

Scholarships and subsidies

Financing of 490 university scholarships (225 from the Custody + 265 from the FFHL) for the duration of 4 years, distributed in different universities (Bethlehem, Hebrew University, Bir Zeit, Amman); 178 grants for students in financial difficulty.

Support for craft businesses

Purchase of spare parts, production equipment, aids for securing the activities of 10 small craft activities.

Activities for families

Bethlehem

Continuing are: projects in support of the parish family counseling; the project aimed at more than 20 children (ages 6-12), coming from families in difficulty; medical assistance for families in serious financial difficulties; renovation of homes belonging to the most needy families (supported by FFHL).

Works in favour of parish communities

Bethlehem: Catholic Action

Extraordinary general maintenance of the bathrooms in the parish swimming-pool area for the use of the local population.

Schools

Amman

Ordinary maintenance work (renovation of the kindergarten kitchen, bathrooms and cleaning of primary school floors).

Creation of a new robotic teaching laboratory at the nursery and 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes. This program will be extended to all the next two years.

Purchases of the e-school educational program using modern means teaching (school management system: which fosters communication between school, parents and the student learning management system that promotes interactive teaching between teachers and students in the classroom and at home).

The radical restructuring work of the Peace Building built in 1976 is underway.

Bethlehem:

Continuation of the rearrangement of the external basketball court of the school and general painting of the same.

Creation of six classrooms for the professional branch (tailoring, carpentry, electricity laboratory, beauty and beauty branch).

Cana:

Works for the construction of a new school (structural works completed) are underway. The complex will also include the parish centre and a covered parking of an area of 5000m2.

Jericho

Installation of whiteboards in the classrooms

Construction of a stage for the school theatre and 4 new classrooms.

Creation of a tent to protect the children in the courtyards alone.

Installation of air conditioning in the school (the temperature rises in the summer up to 50º C)

Creation of a computer room for students.

Jerusalem: Saint Joseph School (Jaffa Gate)

Renovation works of the electrical system completed.

Jerusalem: Terra Sancta School (Damascus Gate)

Ongoing construction of new sports facilities below the large courtyard of the school, which will house a swimming pool, a gym and playgrounds on the building’s roof. These premises will also be used by the youth of the Old City.

After the opening of a kindergarten two years ago with 80 students this will progressively lead to the opening of the first section of a primary school.

Old City. The renovation work of the houses in the Old City continues with the aim of improving the living conditions of the residents: complete renovation of 7 dwellings (4 in 2015, 3 in 2016, 7 in 2018); partial renovation of 6 dwellings (2 in 2015, 4 in 2016, 5 in 2017-18); renovation of the exterior (facades, roofs, etc.) of 5 buildings.

Dar Consul renovation project. The renovation of the residential complex in the Old Town is underway, with 40 apartments and a disused ground floor. The project area is around 2500m2.

Class A restructuring with major interventions for 14 homes (of which 7 are completed).

Class B renovation with medium interventions for 16 homes (of which 10 completed).

Class C restructuring with minor interventions for 10 homes (of which 6 completed).

External renovation of 6 buildings (4 of which are completed).

Dar el Kbire: Design of the 300-400m2 extension of the building and improvement of the 19 existing dwellings (6 are completed). The total area covered by the project is around 2500m2.

Tumian Palace: Design of the extension of the building with the construction of 3 additional floors and 800m2 for residential use.

Abu Geries: Design of the extension of the building with the construction of 750m2 for offices, catering and shops.

Saint James housing project at Beit Hanina: Already obtained is the building permit for two additional floors in each of the 6 buildings, for a total of 24 apartments. The executive planning for an elevated extension is in progress.

Betfage (Monte degli Olivi): 10 new apartments built, an extension of approximately 750m2 of the residential complex consisting of 10 buildings. The apartments have been completed and handed over to families.

Pisgat Zeev housing project: Design of the new residential complex with 70-80 housing units and 300m2 for commercial use.

Jaffa

The Franciscan Neighbourhood: the building permit has been obtained for 124 apartments for Christian families in the parish. The total area of the apartments will be around 10,000m2.

Nazareth

Karm el Sacheb housing Project: project for the construction of a residential complex (church, rooms for social use, 80 apartments for young families).

Other cultural works

Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Every year the Custody of the Holy Land financially supports the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archeology at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem. It offers around 30 scholarships to students from different dioceses, for the duration of their studies.

Christian Media Centre. The services offered include: Website, completely renewed, simplified in use and now mobile friendly; Terra Sancta News a weekly news that tells about faith, history, current events in the Holy Land; broadcast by around 35 broadcasters worldwide in 6 languages; documentaries on social and religious themes, in different languages; broadcasting directly liturgical celebrations and events.

Institute of the Magnificat Music School. It is affiliated to the Vicenza Conservatory, the Magnificat promotes research activities and cultural events at local and international level. It welcomes more than 220 Christian, Muslim and Jewish students, led by 25 professor who are Jewish, Christians and Muslims.

Training of 50 Franciscan students from developing countries to whom the Custody guarantees food, accommodation and financing all studies in Jerusalem between STJ and SBF.

Training of 72 young people in formation in the Custody (from the aspirant to specialist studies).

III. Other works

Assistance given to the Syrian and Iraqi population, Christians and others has continued and intensified in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. The people are living in a situation of extreme necessity, they are helped through the presence of the Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land with financial support and collaboration especially from ATS (Association Terra Santa NGO).

In Lebanon

Reception and temporary support for 14 Iraqi families in Deir Mimas and over 47 in the area of Harissa and Jounieh.

Educational help for 28 Iraqi children and young Iraqis in Deir Mimas, over 35 in the Harissa area and almost 65 in Jounieh. Aid to 40 young Syrians in Jounieh and Beirut.

In Syria

Aid for the people given through the parishes of Aleppo, Damascus, Knayeh, Yakoubieh and Latakieh.

Aleppo emergency centre at the parish and Terra Sancta College:

- distribution of food parcels;

- health care for pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care for both mother and child;

- care of all cases of infertility in all Christian families of all Rites;

- care of children and their growth from all points of view

+ primary needs of milk, diapers for children in the parish, with a monthly subsidy for each child,

+ Post-traumatic War Treatment Centre for children and young adults for Christians and Muslims,

+ clothing distribution, twice a year to more than 1,000 children ...,

+ Aquisition of catechism centres and summer oratories in the poorest parishes, from all points of view,

+ summer oratory for more than 1300 children, material acquisitions, logistics and content for 6 summer oratories and five parishes,

+ "after school" project for 60 children with limited comprehension,

+ top quality English course in the city, at different levels in the city for 65 academically able children,

+ "mental arithmetic" course for 77 academically able children (new 2019),

+ Assumption of children with special talents (private piano lessons for 6 students);

- school support (monthly sum awarded) to students of schools and universities, for students of the Latin Rite;

- repair / reconstruction of damaged houses (of three different levels of damage): we have rebuilt 1500 houses to date (in favour of all Christians of all Rites);

- help given to start small businesses and work activities (1000 people), in favour of all Christians of all Rites);

- project to accommodate 120 Christian soldiers discharged after 8 years of compulsory military service: help through creating job opportunities for each of them (new 2019);

- aid project for Christian, Orthodox and Catholic fiancés, for example: wedding gift (one-year home rental, electricity, one or two-room furniture, home repair ...);

- free funeral service and project to help with the burial service and purchase of the coffin;

- Project to support the families of priests and their poor families, for all Catholic and Orthodox Rites.

Support projects of the Armenian Orthodox Church (new 2019)

- support for the clergy with a monthly sum for each priest who receives a low salary;

- logistic and material help for Orthodox priests to collect data on families, using three of our employees;

- assumption of young poor families with a food package and health care (in place);

- assumption of new catechism centres, where they do not yet exist.

Damascus (Bab Touma, House of Ananias, Tabbale and Salhie):

- repair of structures damaged by bombing

- help for poor families and young people

- medicines and medical interventions

- children and students study aids

- renovation of interior spaces on the ground floor of the Bab Touma parish, for youth activities

- study and restructuring space for a parish cultural centre for young people at the House of Ananias

- Help and support aids for the sick

- Education, help for kindergarten children in Tabbale

- A Post-traumatic War Treatment Centre for children and young people

Latakieh:

- purchase of land to build a pastoral centre at the service of the local parish community

- monthly distribution of food parcels to around 300 families

- A Post-Traumatic War treatment Centre for children and young people

• Aid for refugees in the 3 villages of Knaye, Jacoubie and Sjeide

In Rhodes - Kos

Food aid and first aid for refugees passing through the temporary reception centre of Rhodes and Kos.

Project to repair the parish church, cemetery and monastery in Kos after the earthquake.

IV. Ordinary salaries of the Custody

Monthly salaries of around 1150 employees in Israel and Palestine divided between 15 schools (60% of the total number of employees), 4 Casa Nova Homes for pilgrims (20% of the number of employees), 80 sanctuaries, 25 parishes and many other activities.

General Administration

Summary of Main Projects 2018-2019

The main projects of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem during 2018-2019 centered around three main themes, being expanding the humanitarian support to needy Christian families; enhancing the educational support, mainly through the schools and parishes; and focusing on the pastoral activities, mainly through the parishes and the work of the pastoral committee. Below is a summary of the main projects under each of these main headings.

Expanding the Humanitarian Support to Needy Christian Families

The Latin Patriarchate continued with the existing humanitarian assistance programs that have been offered for many years and expanded the programs to areas where there are emerging needs resulting from the deteriorating economic and political reality of the Holy Land (Palestine, Jordan, and Israel). Such support can be summarized as follows:

• Social Assistance – to support families who are categorized as the poorest of the poor in the areas where we serve. Such families had serious economic problems and the support sometimes ranged from food coupons to payment of utility bills and back rental.
• Educational Support – to assist needy Christian families secure the education of their children either at schools or universities.
• Medical Assistance – to support poor Christians who are in need of urgent medical procedures and do not have medical insurance.
• Medicines – to cover the monthly medicines of poor elderly members who have chronic diseases and require medications on a monthly basis, and do not have insurance.
• Iraqi Refugee Support – to support the families of Christian Iraqi refugees in Jordan through subsidies to their rent costs, medical expenses and transportation.
• Syrian and Iraqi Refugees education – providing a quality education to Syrian and Iraqi refugees through opening 12 LPJ schools in Jordan in the afternoon as second shift to educate the children denied a formal education.
• Gaza Job Creation – providing employment and training opportunities to youth and needy members of the Christian community thus encouraging them to stay in this small yet vibrant community.
• East Jerusalem assistance – to provide Christian families caught in the politics of the city support to sustain their presence in the city as they face legal and eviction proceedings.
• Livelihood refugee support in Jordan – through the implementation of a number of training and employment programs, hundreds were involved in gaining skills in cheese making, pizza production, tailoring skills, and wine making among others. Such refugees became self-sufficient through gaining these skills.

Through the above assistance programs, thousands of needy Christians were assisted as they faced poverty, legal notices, medical emergencies, and general marginalization. In total, over $2 million dollars were allocated to these various programs.

Educational Support

The Latin Patriarchate operates a network of 45 schools and 34 kindergartens spread over the three countries of Israel, Palestine and Jordan. Many of these schools are old, with some buildings being over 170 years old while others more recently constructed. In total the schools educate 19,000 students and employ around 1,550 people, mostly Christians. The project support is divided into two components, the first being new institutions, while the other being the focus on enhancing the buildings through infrastructure, furniture, and equipment upgrades. As for the first category, here is a summary of the main projects:

• Jaffa of Nazareth – Israel – Construction of a new Kindergarten there to meet the growing needs of the Christian community and to expand the school. This project also included a complete renovation of the adjacent school.
• Hashimi – Jordan – The construction of a new Kindergarten in Hashimi which was mandated by the Jordanian Ministry of Education, as the old building did not meet the governmental standards.
• Gaza – Palestine – The construction of a new Kindergarten at the Holy Family School in Gaza to meet the growing needs there. This project also included adding a new floor to expand the school as well as installing a solar energy system.
• Salt – Jordan – The relocation of the school from the crowded center of Salt to the outskirts where the school was relocated in the building formerly used as a kindergarten and house for the Rosary Sisters. This provided an enhanced learning environment after completely renovating the building.

The cost of the above projects was in excess of $2 million dollars.

In addition to these main construction and renovation projects, a number of additional smaller projects were completed including:

• Improving the infrastructure, furniture and equipment at the various schools to ensure a healthy and safe environment. Below is a highlight of the various main projects:

o Installing solar energy systems at over ten schools in Palestine and Jordan. Not only did this reduce the cost of electricity, in many places down to zero, but contributed to an environmentally friendly eco-system.

o Installing smart boards at no less than ten schools to enhance the use of technology in the educational process.

o Hundreds of student desks were either rehabilitated or replaced to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the students.

o Renovation at eight schools of the toilettes improving the hygiene for the students.

o Renovation works at a number of schools including school halls, classrooms, and laboratories.

o Installing an elevator at the Seminary in Beit Jala.

o Enhancing the Computer labs at three schools.

o Installation of CCTV security systems at a number of schools to enhance safety.

o Upgrade of the electric grid at two schools.

The cost estimate for the above projects is about $1 million dollars.

Pastoral Activities

There was renewed commitment to support the pastoral work of the diocese and this can be divided in two categories, the first being to support the pastoral activities while the second component consisted of much needed infrastructure development to support the activities. Below is a summary for the two sub-categories staring with the activities:

• Summer camps focusing on bible education and visits to holy sites were held during the summer at all 55 LPJ parishes.
• Sunday school activities were supported at many LPJ parishes.
• Production of educational materials and games to enhance the pastoral work included educational games production “In the Footsteps of Jesus”
• Support to Catholic scout troupes scattered throughout the parishes.
• Provide transportation costs to various parishes in Palestine to participate in the Palm Sunday procession in Jerusalem as well as Our Lady of Palestine feast in Rafat.
• Expanding the work with the migrant community in Jordan.
• Supporting the work of the prison ministry in Jordan.
• Translating spiritual literature to the Hebrew language to support the Hebrew speaking community.
• Recording Arabic spiritual and religious songs for use by mass media, marketed through YouTube to attract the younger generations.
• Major support to the activities of the Youth Chaplaincy in both Palestine and Jordan.
• Supporting the spiritual retreats of the Lectors and Acolytes.
• Supporting the spiritual retreats of Deacons, and new priests.
• Developing the Emmaus Center for family support.
• Purchasing a bus to support the pastoral activities of the Gaza parish.
• Purchasing a mini-van to support the work of the Youth Chaplaincy in Palestine.
• Supporting all costs of the Catechetical Office and its work throughout the Diocese.

The estimated cost for the above activities is around $500,000.

As for the infrastructure works completed to enhance the pastoral activities, they can be summarized as follows:

• The continuation of the construction of the new Church in Jubeiha, Jordan, which will have a capacity of about 900 seats as well as the parish hall. Expected completion date is March 2020.
• The renovation of the Rosary Sisters residences in Amman, Rameh, Zababdeh, and Beit Jala.
• The rehabilitation or expansion of the parish halls in Kerak, Fheis, Beit Jala, Ramallah, Taybeh, Bir Zeit, Aboud, and Jenin.
• Construction of two rooms in Gaza to serve as a training center serving the youth.
• Complete renovation of the priests’ house in Anjara.
• Rehabilitation works at the Churches in Hashimi, Ader, and Smakieh.
• Renovations and expansions of the Christ the King Bookstore in Beit Sahour being the main source of Christian books and references in the area.
• Renovation of the main conference room at the Latin Patriarchate.

The estimated cost of implementation of the above projects is approximately $1.2 million.

Other Miscellaneous Projects

In addition to the main projects stated above, there are a number of additional projects in various LPJ entities including:

• Our Lady of Peace Center in Jordan – six projects were completed to enhance the services of the center which caters to people with special needs as well as host many pastoral activities. This included the restoration of the hydrotherapy pool; renovation of the games area; establishment of a sensory room; rehabilitation of the speech therapy room; completion of two retired priests’ apartments; and renovation of the bathrooms.
• Ecclesiastical Courts – complete renovation of the courts headquarters in Jerusalem including a safer environment especially for the court documents.
• Beit Afram Elderly Home in Taybeh – a number of projects were completed to improve the infrastructure. This included installing a new fire safety system; safety repairs to emergency exits; re-asphalting the parking lot; water-proofing works to fix leaky roofs; and introducing an air-conditioning and ventilation system in the kitchen.

The estimated cost of the above projects is approximately $350,000.
