Alle ore 11 di questa mattina, nella Sala del Concistoro del Palazzo Apostolico Vaticano, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza i “Patrons of the Arts” dei Musei Vaticani in occasione del 35° anniversario dell’Associazione.
Pubblichiamo di seguito le parole di saluto che il Papa ha rivolto ai presenti all’Udienza:
Saluto del Santo Padre
Cari amici,
sono lieto di accogliervi in occasione del vostro incontro a Roma, che coincide col 35° anniversario dell’Associazione.
Lungo tutti questi anni la vostra generosità ha contribuito in modo notevole al restauro di numerosi tesori d’arte custoditi nei Musei Vaticani. Avete così proseguito una tradizione che attraversa i secoli, imitando le gesta di quanti sono entrati nella storia della Chiesa attraverso la porta dell’arte, ad esempio sovvenzionando gli affreschi e i sarcofagi nelle catacombe, le grandi Cattedrali romaniche e gotiche, le opere di Michelangelo, Raffaello, Bernini e Canova.
L’arte, nella storia, è stata seconda solo alla vita nel testimoniare il Signore. Infatti è stata, ed è, una via maestra che permette di accedere alla fede più di tante parole e idee, perché con la fede condivide il medesimo sentiero, quello della bellezza. È una bellezza, quella dell’arte, che fa bene alla vita e crea comunione: perché unisce Dio, l’uomo e il creato in un’unica sinfonia; perché congiunge il passato, il presente e l’avvenire; perché attira nello stesso luogo e coinvolge nel medesimo sguardo genti diverse e popoli distanti.
Celebrare il vostro anniversario significa allora fare memoria grata di tutto questo, ma significa anche rinnovare la consapevolezza di una importante missione, quella di custodire una bellezza tanto benefica per l’uomo. Contemplare la grande arte, espressione della fede, ci aiuta in particolare a ritrovare ciò che conta nella vita. L’arte cristiana, infatti, conduce dentro sé stessi ed eleva sopra sé stessi: ci riporta all’Amore che ci ha creati, alla Misericordia che ci salva, alla Speranza che ci attende.
Così, nel nostro mondo inquieto, oggi purtroppo tanto lacerato e abbruttito da egoismi e logiche di potere, l’arte rappresenta, forse ancora più che in passato, un bisogno universale, in quanto è sorgente di armonia e di pace, ed esprime la dimensione della gratuità. Perciò vi ringrazio di cuore per il bene che fate, e do a voi e ai vostri famigliari la mia Benedizione, i migliori auguri di pace, chiedendovi di non dimenticarvi di me nelle vostre preghiere.

Dear Friends,
I am pleased to welcome you on the occasion of your meeting in Rome, which this year coincides with the thirty-fifth anniversary of your Association’s foundation.
Your generosity over these years has contributed to the restoration of numerous art treasures held in the Vatican Museums. In this way you have continued a centuries-long tradition, imitating the achievements of those who contributed to the Church’s history through art. These works include the frescoes and sarcophagi in the catacombs, the great Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, and the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and Canova.
Throughout history, art has been second only to life in bearing witness to the Lord. It was, and remains, a majestic road allowing us more than by words and ideas to approach the faith, because it follows the same path of faith, that of beauty. The beauty of art enriches life and creates communion, because it unites God, man and creation in a single symphony. It connects the past, the present and the future, and it attracts – in the same place and with the same gaze – different and far-off peoples.
Celebrating your anniversary allows us to recall this history with gratitude, but it also enables us to renew our awareness of the important mission of preserving such a beautiful heritage that is so beneficial to men and women. Contemplating great art, which expresses the faith, helps us rediscover what truly matters in life. In leading us both within and above ourselves Christian art points us to the love that created us, to the mercy which saves us, and to the hope that awaits us.
In today’s troubled world, unfortunately so often torn and damaged by selfishness and the thirst for power, art represents, perhaps even more than in the past, a universal need because it is a source of harmony and peace, and it expresses the dimension of generosity. Thanking you warmly for the good that you do, I willingly impart my Blessing accompanied by my best wishes for peace, to you and your families. And please do not forget to pray for me. May the Lord bless you all!
