Alle ore 10.15 di questa mattina, nella Sala dei Papi del Palazzo Apostolico, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza Sua Grazia Justin Welby, Arcivescovo di Canterbury e Primate della Chiesa Anglicana, con i Primati delle Province Anglicane, giunti a Roma in occasione della commemorazione del 50° anniversario dell’Incontro tra il Beato Paolo VI e l’Arcivescovo di Canterbury Michael Ramsey e dell’istituzione del Centro Anglicano di Roma che si è tenuta ieri pomeriggio nella Chiesa dei Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio in Roma.
Pubblichiamo di seguito il saluto che il Papa ha pronunciato nel corso dell’incontro:
Saluto del Santo Padre
Vostra Grazia,
cari Fratelli e Sorelle in Cristo,
grazie per la vostra presenza. È un bellissimo segno fraterno vedere i Primati di così tante Province della Comunione Anglicana insieme a Vostra Grazia qui a Roma. Abbiamo solennemente commemorato il 50° anniversario dello storico incontro tra il Beato Paolo VI e l’Arcivescovo Michael Ramsey. Esso ha portato molto frutto: basti pensare alla nascita del Centro Anglicano a Roma, alla nomina del rappresentante permanente dell’Arcivescovo presso la Santa Sede e all’inizio del nostro dialogo teologico, di cui è segno il volume che raccoglie i cinque documenti della seconda fase dell’ARCIC (1982-2005). Nel condividere questi frutti pensiamo che provengono da un albero che ha le sue radici nell’incontro di 50 anni fa.
Pensando al prosieguo del nostro cammino comune, mi vengono in mente tre parole: preghiera, testimonianza, missione.
Preghiera: ieri sera abbiamo celebrato i Vespri, stamani avete pregato qui, sulla tomba dell’Apostolo Pietro: non stanchiamoci di chiedere insieme e insistentemente al Signore il dono dell’unità.
Testimonianza: questi 50 anni di incontro e scambio, così come la riflessione e i testi comuni, ci raccontano di cristiani che, per fede e con fede, si sono ascoltati e hanno condiviso tempo e forze. È cresciuta la convinzione che l’ecumenismo non è mai un impoverimento, ma una ricchezza; è maturata la certezza che quanto lo Spirito ha seminato nell’altro produce un raccolto comune. Facciamo tesoro di questa eredità e sentiamoci ogni giorno chiamati a donare al mondo, come chiesto da Gesù, la testimonianza dell’amore e dell’unità tra noi (cfr Gv 15,12; 17,21).
Missione: c’è un tempo per ogni cosa (cfr Qo 3,1) e questo è il tempo in cui il Signore ci interpella, in modo particolare, a uscire da noi stessi e dai nostri ambienti, per portare il suo amore misericordioso a un mondo assetato di pace. Aiutiamoci gli uni gli altri a mettere al centro le esigenze del Vangelo e a spenderci concretamente in questa missione.
E per chiedere la grazia di crescere nella preghiera, nel dare testimonianza e nell’andare in missione, mi permetto di invitarvi a pregare insieme il Padre Nostro.

Your Grace,
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Thank you for your presence. It is a beautiful sign of fraternity to see the Primates of so many Provinces of the Anglican Communion joining you here in Rome. We have solemnly celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the historic meeting between Blessed Paul VI and Archbishop Michael Ramsey. That meeting has produced many fruits: we need think only of the opening of the Anglican Centre in Rome, the appointment of the Archbishop’s permanent representative to the Holy See, and the start of our theological dialogue, represented by the volume containing five documents from the second phase of ARCIC (1982-2005). In sharing together these fruits, we remember that they come from a tree which has its roots in that meeting of fifty years ago.
Reflecting on our continuing common journey, three words come to mind: prayer, witness, mission.
Prayer: yesterday evening we celebrated Vespers, and this morning you prayed here at the tomb of the Apostle Peter. Let us never grow tired of asking the Lord together and insistently for the gift of unity.
Witness: these past fifty years of encounter and exchange, as well as reflection and common texts, speak to us of Christians who, for faith and with faith, have listened to one another and shared their time and energy. The conviction has grown that ecumenism is never an impoverishment, but a richness; the certainty has deepened that what the Spirit has sown in the other yields a common harvest. Let us treasure this inheritance and know that we are called each day to offer to the world, as Jesus asked, the witness of our love and unity (cf. Jn 15:12; 17:21).
Mission: there is a time for everything (cf. Eccles 3:1) and now is the time in which the Lord challenges us, in a particular way, to go out from ourselves and our own environs, in order to bring his merciful love to a world thirsting for peace. Let us help one another to keep at the centre the demands of the Gospel and to spend ourselves concretely in this mission.
And to ask the grace of growing in prayer, in bearing witness and in going out in mission, may I invite you to pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
