Nel pomeriggio il Santo Padre Francesco si è recato in visita alla Cattedrale di Morelia.
In sagrestia ha salutato 14 Rettori di Università messicane e 6 Leader di altre confessioni cristiane, quindi in Cattedrale è stato accolto da seicento bambini della diocesi che stanno frequentando il catechismo. A loro il Papa ha rivolto a braccio le parole che riportiamo di seguito:

¡Tomen asiento! ¡Buenas tardes! Sé que vienen de todas las parroquias de la ciudad y de las diócesis sufragáneas y de algunos colegios. Muchas gracias por la visita.

Le voy a pedir a Jesús que los haga crecer con mucho amor, con mucho amor, como tenía Él. Con mucho amor para ser cristianos en serio, para cumplir el mandamiento que Jesús nos dio: Amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y al prójimo como Jesús los amó, como a nosotros mismos o más, como Él nos amó.

Y le vamos a pedir a la Virgen también que nos cuide, que nos bendiga. Sobre todo, cada uno de ustedes, ahora, piense en su corazón en la familia que tiene y en los amigos, y si están peleados con alguno, también piensen en él, y también le vamos a pedir para que la Virgen lo cuide: es una manera de ir haciéndonos amigos y no tantos enemigos, porque la vida no es linda con enemigos, y El que hace los verdaderos amigos es Dios en nuestro corazón.

Entonces, en silencio, pensamos en la familia, en nuestros amigos, en aquellos con quienes estamos peleados, para que Dios los bendiga y por todas las personas que nos ayudan -las monjas, los curas los profesores, los maestros en la escuela- todos los que nos están ayudando a crecer. Y una bendición especial también para papá, mamá y los abuelos. Silencio, cerramos los ojos y pedimos todo esto.

Buenas tardes, a ustedes, jóvenes de México que están aquí, que están mirando por televisión, que están escuchando, y quiero enviar un saludo y una bendición a los miles de jóvenes que, en la Arquidiócesis de Guadalajara, están reunidos en la Plaza San Juan Pablo II siguiendo lo que está pasando aquí y, como ellos, tantos otros; pero, me mandaron a avisar que eran miles y miles allí, ya reunidos, escuchando. Así que somos dos estadios, la Plaza Juan Pablo de Guadalajara y nosotros aquí, y después, tantos otros por todos lados.

Yo conocía las inquietudes de ustedes, porque me habían hecho llegar el borrador de lo que más o menos iban a decir; es verdad, ¡para qué les voy a mentir! Pero a medida que hablaban también iba tomando nota de cosas que me parecían importantes para que no quedaran en el aire....

Les cuento que cuando llegué a esta tierra fui recibido con una calurosa bienvenida, y pude constatar ahí mismo algo que sabía desde hace tiempo: la vitalidad, la alegría, el espíritu festivo del Pueblo mexicano. «Ahorita»..., después de escucharlos, pero especialmente después de verlos, constato nuevamente otra certeza, algo que le dije al Presidente de la Nación en mi primer saludo. Uno de los mayores tesoros de esta tierra mexicana tiene rostro joven, son sus jóvenes. Sí, son ustedes la riqueza de esta tierra. ¡Cuidado! No dije la esperanza de esta tierra, dije: «Su riqueza».

La montaña puede tener minerales ricos que van a servir para el progreso de la humanidad, es su riqueza, pero esa riqueza hay que transformarla en esperanza con el trabajo, como hacen los mineros cuando van sacando esos minerales. Ustedes son la riqueza, hay que transformarla en esperanza. Y Daniela, al final, echó un desafío y, además, también nos dio la pista sobre la esperanza. Pero todos los que hablaron, cuando marcaban las dificultades, las cosas que pasaban, afirmaban una verdad muy grande: que «todos podemos vivir, pero no podemos vivir sin esperanza». Sentir el mañana, no podemos sentir el mañana si uno primero no logra valorarse, no logra sentir que su vida, sus manos, su historia, vale la pena. Sentir eso que Alberto decía, que «con mis manos, con mi corazón y con mi mente puedo construir esperanza». Si yo no siento eso la esperanza no podrá entrar en mi corazón. La esperanza nace cuando se puede experimentar que no todo está perdido, y para eso es necesario el ejercicio de empezar «por casa», empezar por sí mismo. No todo está perdido. No estoy perdido, yo valgo, yo valgo mucho. Les pido silencio ahora, cada uno se contesta en su corazón: ¿Es verdad que no todo está perdido? ¿Yo estoy perdido o estoy perdida? ¿Yo valgo? ¿Valgo poco, valgo mucho? La principal amenaza a la esperanza son los discursos que te desvalorizan, te van como chupando el valor y terminás como caído, ¿no es cierto?, como arrugado, con el corazón triste. Discursos que te hacen sentir de segunda, si no de cuarta. La principal amenaza a la esperanza es cuando sentís que no le importás a nadie o que estás dejado de lado. Esa es la gran dificultad para la esperanza: cuando en una familia o en una sociedad o en una escuela o en un grupo de amigos te hacen sentir que no les importás. Y eso es duro es doloroso, pero eso sucede, ¿o no sucede? ¿Sí o no? [Responden: «Sí»] ¡Sí, sucede! Eso mata, eso nos aniquila y esa es la puerta de ingreso para tanto dolor. Pero también hay otra principal amenaza a la esperanza –a la esperanza de que esa riqueza, que son ustedes, crezca y dé su fruto– y es hacerte creer que empezás a ser valioso cuando te disfrazás de ropas, marcas del último grito de la moda, o cuando te volvés prestigio, importante por tener dinero pero, en el fondo, tu corazón no cree que seas digno de cariño, digno de amor y eso tu corazón lo intuye. La esperanza está amordazada por lo que te hacen creer, no te la dejan surgir. La principal amenaza es cuando uno siente que tiene que tener plata para comprar todo, incluso el cariño de los demás. La principal amenaza es creer que por tener un gran «carro» sos feliz. ¿Es verdad esto, que por tener un gran carro sos feliz? [Responden: «No»].

Ustedes son la riqueza de México, ustedes son la riqueza de la Iglesia. Permítanme que les diga una frase de mi tierra: «No les estoy sobando el lomo». No los estoy adulando. Y entiendo que muchas veces se vuelve difícil sentirse la riqueza cuando nos vemos continuamente expuestos a la pérdida de amigos o de familiares en manos del narcotráfico, de las drogas, de organizaciones criminales que siembran el terror. Es difícil sentirse la riqueza de una nación cuando no se tienen oportunidades de trabajo digno –Alberto, lo expresaste claramente–, posibilidades de estudio y capacitación, cuando no se sienten reconocidos los derechos que después terminan impulsándolos a situaciones límites. Es difícil sentirse la riqueza de un lugar cuando, por ser jóvenes, se los usa para fines mezquinos, seduciéndolos con promesas que al final no son reales, son pompas de jabón. Y es difícil sentirse ricos así. La riqueza la llevan adentro y la esperanza la llevan adentro; pero no es fácil, por todo esto que les estoy diciendo, que es lo que dijeron ustedes: faltan oportunidades de trabajo y de estudio –dijo Roberto y Alberto–.

Pero, pese a todo esto, no me voy a cansar de decirlo: ustedes son la riqueza de México.

Roberto, vos dijiste una frase que, o se me escapó cuando leí tu apunte o…, pero que quiero detenerme. Vos hablaste que perdiste algo, y no dijiste: «Perdí el celular, perdí la billetera con plata, perdí el tren porque llegué tarde». Dijiste: «Perdimos el encanto de disfrutar del encuentro». Perdimos el encanto de caminar juntos, perdimos el encanto de soñar juntos y para que esta riqueza, movida por la esperanza, vaya adelante, hay que caminar juntos, hay que encontrarse, hay que soñar. ¡No pierdan el encanto de soñar! ¡Atrévanse a soñar! Soñar, que no es lo mismo que ser dormilones, eso no, ¿eh?

Y no crean que les digo esto –de que ustedes son la riqueza de México y que esa riqueza con la esperanza va adelante– porque soy bueno, o porque la tengo clara, no queridos amigos, no es así. Les digo esto y estoy convencido; y, ¿saben por qué? Porque, como ustedes, creo en Jesucristo. Y creo que Daniela fue muy fuerte cuando nos habló de esto. Yo creo en Jesucristo, y por eso les digo esto. Él es quien renueva continuamente en mí la esperanza, es Él quien renueva continuamente mi mirada. Es Él quien despierta en mí, o sea, en cada uno de nosotros, el encanto de disfrutar, el encanto de soñar, el encanto de trabajar juntos. Es Él quien continuamente me invita a convertir el corazón. Sí, amigos míos, les digo esto porque en Jesús yo encontré a Aquel que es capaz de encender lo mejor de mí mismo. Y es de su mano que podamos hacer camino, es de su mano que una y otra vez podamos volver a empezar, es de su mano que podamos decir: Es mentira que la única forma de vivir, de poder ser joven, es dejando la vida en manos del narcotráfico o de todos aquellos que lo único que están haciendo es sembrar destrucción y muerte. Eso es mentira y lo decimos de la mano de Jesús. Es también de la mano de Jesús, de Jesucristo, el Señor, que podemos decir que es mentira que la única forma que tienen de vivir los jóvenes aquí es la pobreza, la marginación; en la marginación de oportunidades, en la marginación de espacios, en la marginación de la capacitación y educación, en la marginación de la esperanza. Es Jesucristo el que desmiente todos los intentos de hacerlos inútiles, o meros mercenarios de ambiciones ajenas. Son las ambiciones ajenas las que a ustedes los marginan, para usarlos en todas estas cosas que yo dije –que saben– y que terminan en la destrucción. Y el único que me puede tener bien fuerte de la mano es Jesucristo; Él hace que ésta riqueza se transforme en esperanza.

Me han pedido una palabra de esperanza, la que tengo para decirles, la que está en la base de todo, se llama Jesucristo. Cuando todo parezca pesado, cuando parezca que se nos viene el mundo encima, abracen su cruz, abrácenlo a Él y, por favor, nunca se suelten de su mano, aunque los esté llevando adelante arrastrando; y, si se caen una vez, déjense levantar por Él. Los alpinistas tienen una canción muy linda, que a mí me gusta repetírsela a los jóvenes – mientras suben van cantando–: «En el arte de ascender el triunfo no está en no caer sino en no permanecer caído». Ese es el arte, y, ¿quién es el único que te puede agarrar de la mano para que no permanezcas caído?: Jesucristo, el único. Jesucristo que, a veces, te manda un hermano para que te hable y te ayude. No escondas tu mano cuando estás caído, no le digas: «No me mires que estoy embarrado o embarrada. No me mires que ya no tengo remedio». Solamente, dejáte agarrar la mano y agarráte a esa mano, y la riqueza que tenés adentro, sucia, embarrada, dada por perdida, va a empezar, a través de la esperanza, a dar su fruto. Pero siempre agarrado de la mano de Jesucristo. Ese es el camino, no se olviden: «En el arte de ascender el triunfo no está en no caer sino en no permanecer caído». No se permitan permanecer caídos ¡Nunca! ¿De acuerdo! Y si ven un amigo o una amiga que se pegó un resbalón en la vida y se cayó, andá y ofrecéle la mano, pero ofrecésela con dignidad. Ponéte al lado de él, al lado de ella, escuchálo, no le digas: «Te traigo la receta». No, como amigo, despacito, dale fuerza con tus palabras, dale fuerza con la escucha, esa medicina que se va olvidando: la «escuchoterapia». Dejálo hablar, dejálo que te cuente, y entonces, poquito a poco, te va a ir extendiendo la mano, y vos lo vas a ayudar en nombre de Jesucristo. Pero si vas de golpe y le empezás a predicar, y a darle y a darle, pues, pobrecito, lo vas a dejar peor que como estaba. ¿Está claro? [Responden: «Sí»]. Nunca se suelten de la mano de Jesucristo, nunca se aparten de Él; y, si se apartan, se levantan y sigan adelante, Él comprende lo que son éstas cosas. Porque de la mano de Jesucristo es posible vivir a fondo, de su mano es posible creer que la vida vale la pena, que vale la pena dar lo mejor de sí, ser fermento, ser sal y luz en medio de los amigos, en medio del barrio, en medio de la comunidad, en medio de la familia –después, Rosario, voy a hablar un poquito de esto que vos dijiste de la familia–. En medio de la familia. Por esto, queridos amigos, de la mano de Jesús les pido que no se dejen excluir, no se dejen desvalorizar, no se dejen tratar como mercancía. Jesús nos dio un consejo para esto, para no dejarnos excluir, para no dejarnos desvalorizar, para no dejarnos tratar como una mercancía: «Sean astutos como serpientes y humildes como palomas». Las dos virtudes juntas. A los jóvenes viveza no les falta, a veces, les falta la astucia para que no sean ingenuos. Las dos cosas: astutos pero sencillos, bondadosos. Es cierto que por este camino quizás que no tendrán el último carro en la puerta, no tendrán los bolsillos llenos de plata, pero tendrán algo que nadie nunca podrá sacarles, que es la experiencia de sentirse amados, abrazados, acompañados. Es el encanto de disfrutar del encuentro, el encanto de soñar en el encuentro de todos. Es la experiencia de sentirse familia, de sentirse comunidad. Y es la experiencia de poder mirar al mundo a la cara, con la frente alta, sin el carro, sin la plata, pero con la frente alta: la dignidad. Tres palabras que las vamos a repetir: Riqueza, porque se la dieron; Esperanza, porque queremos abrirnos a la esperanza; Dignidad. Repetimos: Riqueza, esperanza y dignidad. La riqueza que Dios les dio a ustedes. Ustedes son la riqueza de México. La esperanza que les da Jesucristo y la dignidad que les da el no dejarse «sobar el lomo» y ser mercadería para los bolsillos de otros.

Hoy el Señor los sigue llamando, los sigue convocando, al igual que lo hizo con el indio Juan Diego. Los invita a construir un santuario. Un santuario que no es un lugar físico, sino una comunidad, un santuario llamado parroquia, un santuario llamado Nación. La comunidad, la familia, el sentirnos ciudadanos, es uno de los principales antídotos contra todo lo que nos amenaza, porque nos hace sentir parte de esta gran familia de Dios. No para refugiarnos, para encerrarnos, para escaparnos de las amenazas de la vida o de los desafíos, al contrario, para salir a invitar a otros; para salir a anunciar a otros que ser joven en México es la mayor riqueza y, por lo tanto, no puede ser sacrificada. Y porque la riqueza es capaz de tener esperanza y nos da dignidad. Otra vez las tres palabras: riqueza, esperanza y dignidad. Pero riqueza, esa que Dios nos dio y que tenemos que hacer crecer.

Jesús, el que nos da la esperanza, nunca nos invitaría a ser sicarios, sino que nos llama discípulos, nos llama amigos. Jesús nunca nos mandaría al muere, sino que todo en Él es invitación a la vida. Una vida en familia, una vida en comunidad; una familia y una comunidad a favor de la sociedad. Y aquí, Rosario, retomo lo que vos dijiste, una cosa tan linda: «En la familia se aprende cercanía». Se aprende solidaridad, se aprende a compartir, a discernir, a llevar adelante los problemas unos de otros, a pelearse y a arreglarse, a discutir y a abrazarse, y a besarse. La familia es la primera escuela de la Nación, y en la familia está esa riqueza que tienen ustedes. La familia es como quien custodia esa riqueza, en la familia van a encontrar esperanza, porque está Jesús, y en la familia van a tener dignidad. Nunca, nunca dejen de lado la familia; la familia es la piedra de base de la construcción de una gran Nación. Ustedes son riqueza, tienen esperanza y sueñan –también Rosario habló de soñar–. ¿Ustedes sueñan con tener una familia? [Responden: «Sí»]

Queridos hermanos, ustedes son la riqueza de este País y, cuando duden de eso, miren a Jesucristo, que es la esperanza, el que desmiente todos los intentos de hacerlos inútiles, o meros mercenarios de ambiciones ajenas.

Vi dico che, quando sono arrivato in questa terra, sono stato accolto con un caloroso benvenuto, e ho potuto constatare immediatamente una cosa che sapevo da tempo: la vitalità, l’allegria, lo spirito festoso del Popolo messicano. Adesso, dopo avervi ascoltato, ma specialmente dopo avervi visto, constato nuovamente un’altra certezza, una cosa che ho detto al Presidente della Nazione nel mio primo saluto. Uno dei tesori più grandi di questa terra messicana ha il volto giovane, sono i suoi giovani. Sì, siete voi la ricchezza di questa terra. Attenzione: non ho detto la speranza di questa terra, ho detto: la ricchezza.

La speranza nasce quando si può sperimentare che non tutto è perduto. E per questo è necessario l’esercizio di incominciare “da casa”, da sé stessi. Non tutto è perduto. Io non sono perduto. Io valgo, io valgo molto. Vi chiedo silenzio adesso; ciascuno risponda nel suo cuore: E’ vero che non tutto è perduto? Io sono perduto, sono perduta? Io valgo? Valgo poco? Valgo molto? La principale minaccia alla speranza sono i discorsi che ti svalutano, come se ti succhiassero il valore, e finisci come a terra – non è vero? – come avvizzito, con il cuore triste… discorsi che ti fanno sentire di seconda classe, se non di quarta. La principale minaccia alla speranza è quando senti che a nessuno importa di te o che sei lasciato in disparte. Questa è la grande difficoltà per la speranza: quando in una famiglia o in una società o in una scuola o in un gruppo di amici ti fanno sentire che gli importa di te. E questo è duro, è doloroso, però succede – o non succede? Sì o no? [“Si”]. Succede! Questo uccide, questo ci annienta, e questo apre la porta a tanto dolore. Ma c’è anche un’altra importante minaccia alla speranza – alla speranza che quella ricchezza, che siete voi, cresca e dia il suo frutto – ed è farti credere che cominci a valere quando ti mascheri di vestiti, marche, dell’ultimo grido della moda, o quando diventi prestigioso, importante perché hai denaro, ma in fondo il tuo cuore non crede che tu sia degno di affetto, degno di amore, e questo il cuore lo intuisce. La speranza è imbavagliata da quello che ti fanno credere, non te la lasciano emergere. La principale minaccia è quando uno sente che i soldi gli servono per comprare tutto, compreso l’affetto degli altri. La principale minaccia è credere che perché hai una bella macchina sei felice. Ma è vero che se hai una bella macchina sei felice?

Voi siete la ricchezza del Messico, voi siete la ricchezza della Chiesa. Permettetemi di dirvi un’espressione della mia terra: no les estoy “sobando el lomo” – non vi sto “lisciando il pelo”, non vi sto adulando! E capisco che molte volte diventa difficile sentirsi la ricchezza quando ci troviamo continuamente esposti alla perdita di amici e di familiari nelle mani del narcotraffico, delle droghe, di organizzazioni criminali che seminano il terrore. E’ difficile sentirsi la ricchezza di una nazione quando non si hanno opportunità di lavoro dignitoso – Alberto, lo hai detto chiaramente –, possibilità di studio e di preparazione, quando non si vedono riconosciuti i diritti e questo poi finisce per spingere a situazioni limite. E’ difficile sentirsi la ricchezza di un luogo quando, per il fatto che sono giovani, li si usa per scopi meschini seducendoli con promesse che alla fine nono sono reali, sono bolle di sapone. Ed è difficile sentirsi ricchi così. La ricchezza ce l’avete dentro, la speranza ce l’avete dentro, però non è facile, per tutto questo che vi sto dicendo, e che voi stessi avete detto: mancano opportunità di lavoro e di studio – l’hanno detto Roberto e Alberto. Eppure, malgrado tutto questo, non mi stanco di ripeterlo: voi siete la ricchezza del Messico.

Roberto, tu hai detto una frase che voglio conservare. Hai detto che hai perso qualcosa. E non hai detto: Ho perso il cellulare, ho perso il portafogli con i soldi, ho perso il treno perché sono arrivato tardi… Hai detto: Abbiamo perso il fascino di godere dell’incontro”. Abbiamo perso il fascino di camminare insieme; abbiamo perso il fascino di sognare insieme. E perché questa ricchezza, mossa dalla speranza, vada avanti, bisogna camminare insieme, bisogna incontrarsi, bisogna sognare! Non perdete il fascino di sognare! Osate sognare! Sognare, che non è lo stesso di essere dormiglioni, questo no!

E non pensate che vi dica questo – che voi siete la ricchezza del Messico, e che questa ricchezza con la speranza va avanti – perché sono buono, o perché sono un esperto, no, cari amici, non è così. Vi dico questo, e ne sono convinto, sapete perché? Perché come voi credo in Gesù Cristo. E penso che Daniela è stata molto forte quando ci ha parlato di questo. Io credo in Gesù Cristo, e perciò vi dico questo. E’ Lui che rinnova continuamente in me la speranza, è Lui che rinnova continuamente il mio sguardo. E’ Lui che risveglia in me, in ognuno di noi il fascino di godere, il fascino di sognare, il fascino di lavorare insieme. E’ Lui che continuamente mi invita a convertire il cuore. Sì, amici miei, vi dico questo perché in Gesù io ho incontrato Colui che è capace di accendere il meglio di me stesso. Ed è grazie a Lui che possiamo fare strada, è grazie a Lui che ogni volta possiamo ricominciare da capo, è grazie a Lui che possiamo dire: non è vero che l’unico modo di vivere, di essere giovani è lasciare la vita nelle mani del narcotraffico o di tutti quelli che la sola cosa che stanno facendo è seminare distruzione e morte. Questo non è vero e lo diciamo grazie a Gesù. Ed è anche grazie a Gesù, a Gesù Cristo il Signore che possiamo dire che non è vero che l’unico modo di vivere per i giovani qui è la povertà e l’emarginazione; emarginazione dalle opportunità, emarginazione dagli spazi, emarginazione da formazione ed educazione, emarginazione dalla speranza. E’ Gesù Cristo Colui che smentisce tutti i tentativi di rendervi inutili, o meri mercenari di ambizioni altrui. Sono le ambizioni altrui che vi emarginano, per usarvi in tutte quelle cose che ho detto, che sapete, e che finiscono nella distruzione. E l’unico che mi può tenere ben forte per la mano è Gesù Cristo. Egli fa sì che questa ricchezza si trasformi in speranza.

Mi avete chiesto una parola di speranza: quella che ho da dirvi, quella che è alla base di tutto, si chiama Gesù Cristo. Quando tutto sembra pesante, quando sembra che ci caschi il mondo addosso, abbracciate la sua croce, abbracciate Lui e, per favore, non staccatevi mai dalla sua mano, anche se vi sta portando avanti trascinandovi; e se una volta cadete, lasciatevi rialzare da Lui. Gli alpini hanno una canzone molto bella, che a me piace ripetere ai giovani, una canzone che cantano mentre salgono: “Nell’arte di ascendere, il successo non sta nel non cadere, ma nel non rimanere caduto”. Questa è l’arte. E chi è l’unico che ti può afferrare per la mano perché tu non rimanga caduto? Gesù Cristo, solo Lui. Gesù Cristo che, a volte, ti manda un fratello perché ti parli e ti aiuti. Non nascondere la tua mano quando sei caduto. Non dirgli: Non guardarmi che sto infangato o infangata. Non guardarmi, che ormai non c’è più rimedio. Solamente lasciati afferrare la mano, e afferra quella mano, e la ricchezza che hai dentro, sporca, infangata, data per perduta, comincerà, attraverso la speranza, a dare il suo frutto. Ma sempre con la mano stretta a quella di Gesù Cristo. Questa è la strada. Non dimenticate: “Nell’arte di ascendere, il successo non sta nel non cadere, ma nel non rimanere caduto”. Non permettetevi di rimanere caduti! Mai! D’accordo? E se vedete un amico o un’amica che ha fatto uno scivolone nella vita ed è caduto, vai e offri la tua mano; ma offrila con dignità: mettiti accanto a lui, accanto a lei, ascolta… Non dire: ti do la ricetta! Non, da amico, con calma, dagli forza con le tue parole, con il tuo ascolto: quella medicina che si sta dimenticando: l’“ascoltoterapia”. Lascialo parlare, lascia che ti racconti, e allora, a poco a poco, ti allungherà la mano, e tu lo aiuterai nel nome di Gesù Cristo. Ma se vai di colpo, e cominci a fargli la predica, e dai e dai, alla fine, poveretto, lo lasci peggio di come stava… E’ chiaro? Non staccatevi mai dalla mano di Gesù Cristo, non allontanatevi mai da Lui. E se vi allontanate, rialzatevi e andate avanti: Lui capisce cosa sono queste cose. Perché insieme a Gesù Cristo è possibile vivere pienamente, insieme a Lui è possibile credere che vale la pena vivere; che vale la pena dare il meglio di sé, essere fermento, sale e luce tra gli amici, nel quartiere, nella comunità, nella famiglia – dopo, Rosario, parlerò un po’ di quello che tu hai detto sulla famiglia.

Per questo, cari amici, da parte di Gesù vi chiedo di non lasciarvi escludere, non lasciarvi disprezzare, non lasciarvi trattare come merce. Gesù ci ha dato un consiglio per questo, per non lasciarci escludere, per non lasciarci disprezzare, per non lasciarci trattare come una merce: «Siate prudenti come i serpenti e semplici come le colombe» (Mt 10,16). Le due virtù insieme. Ai giovani la vivacità non manca; a volte, manca loro la prudenza, per non essere ingenui. Entrambe le cose: prudenti ma semplici, buoni. Certo, per questa strada forse non avrete la macchina ultimo modello, non avrete il portafoglio pieno di soldi, ma avrete qualcosa che nessuno potrà togliervi, cioè l’esperienza di sentirsi amati, abbracciati e accompagnati. E’ il fascino di godere dell’incontro, il fascino di sognare nell’incontro con tutti. E’ l’esperienza di sentirsi famiglia, di sentirsi comunità. E’ l’esperienza di poter guardare il mondo in faccia, a testa alta! Senza la macchina, senza i soldi, ma a testa alta! La dignità!

Tre parole che adesso ripetiamo: ricchezza, perché ci è stata data; speranza, perché vogliamo aprirci alla speranza; dignità. Ripetiamo: ricchezza, speranza e dignità [ripetono]. La ricchezza che Dio ha dato a voi: voi siete la ricchezza del Messico; la speranza che vi dà Gesù Cristo; la dignità che vi dà il non lasciarvi “lisciare il pelo”, ed essere merce per il borsellino di altri.

Oggi il Signore continua a chiamarvi, continua a convocarvi, come fece con l’indio Juan Diego. Vi invita a costruire un santuario. Un santuario che non è un luogo fisico, bensì una comunità, un santuario chiamato parrocchia, un santuario chiamato Nazione. La comunità, la famiglia, il sentirci cittadini è uno dei principali antidoti contro tutto ciò che ci minaccia, perché ci fa sentire parte di questa grande famiglia di Dio. Non per rifugiarci, per chiuderci, per scappare dai pericoli della vita e dalle sfide; anzi, per uscire ad invitare altri, per uscire ad annunciare a tutti che essere giovani in Messico è la più grande ricchezza e pertanto non può essere sacrificata. E perché la ricchezza è capace di avere speranza e ci dà dignità. Un’altra volta le tre parole: ricchezza, speranza e dignità. Ma quella ricchezza che Dio ci ha dato e che dobbiamo far crescere.

Gesù, Colui che ci dà la speranza, mai ci inviterebbe ad essere sicari, ma ci chiama discepoli, ci chiama amici. Gesù mai ci manderebbe a morire, ma tutto in Lui è invito alla vita. Una vita in famiglia, una vita in comunità; una famiglia e una comunità a favore della società. E qui, Rosario, riprendo quello che tu hai detto, una cosa molto bella: “Nella famiglia si impara la vicinanza”. Si impara la solidarietà, si impara a condividere, a discernere, a portare avanti i problemi gli uni degli altri, a litigare e a mettersi d’accordo, a discutere e ad abbracciarsi e a baciarsi. La famiglia è la prima scuola della nazione, e nella famiglia c’è quella ricchezza che voi avete. La famiglia è quella che custodisce questa ricchezza, nella famiglia potete trovare speranza, perché c’è Gesù, e nella famiglia potete avere dignità. Mai, mai mettete da parte la famiglia! La famiglia è la pietra angolare della costruzione di una grande nazione. Voi siete ricchezza, avete speranza e sognate… – anche Rosario ha parlato di sognare –: voi sognate di avere una famiglia? [“Sì”].

Cari fratelli, voi siete la ricchezza di questo Paese, e quando dubitate di questo, guardate Gesù Cristo, che è la speranza, Colui che smentisce tutti i tentativi di rendervi inutili, o meri mercenari di ambizioni altrui.

Good afternoon to you, young friends of Mexico here today, and to those who are following us on television or listening to us. I want to send a greeting and blessing to all the thousands of young people within the Archdiocese of Guadalajara who are joining us at the Plaza San Juan Pablo II, and to many others; I was told that there are many thousands there following our celebration. So then we are two stadiums, the Plaza San Juan Pablo II, and our venue here, as well as many other young people in other places.

I already knew your concerns because I was given a draft copy of what you might say; I have to be honest, why tell you a lie! But as you were speaking I also took some notes of the things which seemed more important so that they would not be left hanging in the air.

I have to tell you that when I arrived in this country I received a warm welcome and I saw something that I knew for a long time: the vitality, the joy, and the festive spirit of the Mexican people. And now [ahorita]… after listening to you, but particularly after seeing you, I am also certain about something else, something I said to the President of the nation when I arrived. One of Mexico’s greatest treasures is that it has a youthful face: its young people. Yes, you are the wealth of this land. Careful though! I did not say the hope of this land, but its wealth.

The mountain may have rich minerals to serve humanity’s advancement, in terms of its wealth, but that richness has to be converted into hope by hard work, just as miners do when they extract those minerals. You are this wealth, and it has to be converted into hope. And Daniela concluded by offering us a challenge, as well as giving us some guidance about hope. But all who spoke about their difficulties and their experiences expressed a great truth: “all of us can live but we cannot live without hope”. You cannot look to the future if you do not first know how to value yourselves, if you do not feel that your life, your hands, your history, is worth the effort. It’s about feeling what Alberto described: “with my hands, with my heart and my mind I can build up hope; if I do not perceive that hope, then it cannot enter my heart”. Hope is born when you are able to experience that all is not lost; and for this to happen it is necessary to start “at home”, to begin with yourself. Not everything is lost. I am not lost; I am worth something, I am worth a lot. I ask you for some silence now, and I ask each one of you to ask himself or herself: “Is it true that not everything is lost?” “Am I lost?” “Do I have worth?” “Am I worth a little, a lot?” The biggest threats to hope are those words which devalue you, words which suck out your value and you end up feeling down, is this not so? Words which make you feel second rate, even fourth rate. The biggest threat to hope is when you feel that you do not matter to anybody or that that you have been left aside. This is the great obstacle to hope: when, in a family, society, school or a group of friends, you are made to feel unimportant to them. This is hard and painful, but it does happen, am I right? Yes or no? [They reply “Yes”]. Yes, it happens. This kills, this crushes us and opens the door to much suffering. But there is also another principal threat to the hope that your richness will grow and bear fruit, and it is this: to allow yourself to believe that you begin to be valuable when you start wearing the right clothes, the latest brands and fashions, or when you start enjoying prestige and importance because you have money; but in the depths of your heart you do not believe that you are worthy of kindness or love and this is something which your heart intuits. Hope is silenced by what they make you believe, and they don’t let you flourish. The biggest threat is when a person feels that they must have money to buy everything, including the love of others. The biggest threat is to believe that by having a big car you will be happy. Is this true, that by having a big car you will be happy? [They reply: “No”].

You are the wealth of Mexico, you are the wealth of the Church. Allow me to tell you a phrase from my country: “I am not massaging your back”; “I am not flattering you”. I understand that often it is difficult to feel your value when you are continually exposed to the loss of friends or relatives at the hands of the drug trade, of drugs themselves, of criminal organizations that sow terror. It is hard to feel the wealth of a nation when there are no opportunities for dignified work – Alberto you expressed this clearly – no possibilities for study or advancement, when you feel your rights are not recognized, which then leads you to extreme situations. It is difficult to appreciate the value of a place when, because of your youth, you are used for selfish purposes, seduced by promises that end up being untrue. They are like soap bubbles. And it is difficult to feel valuable in these cases. You bear your value inside and your hope too; but it is not easy, due to the things I am telling you and to the things you have told us: there is a lack of work and study opportunities, as Roberto and Alberto said.

Nonetheless, despite all this, I will never tire of saying, You are the wealth of Mexico. Roberto, you used a phrase which I may have overlooked when I read the draft, but it’s something I want to come back to. You spoke about losing something and yet you did not say: “I lost my cell phone, I lost my wallet with money in it, I lost the train because I was late”. We have lost the wonder of walking together, we have lost the delight of dreaming together, so that this wealth, moved by hope, can take us forward; we need to walk together, we need to meet, and we need to dream. Do not lose the fascinating power of dreaming! Have the courage to dream! To dream, which is not the same as being sleepyheads, right?

And don’t think I am saying this – that you are the wealth of Mexico and that this richness goes forward when it is full of hope – because I am good, or I because I have concise ideas about it; no dear friends, it is not like that. I say this to you and I am convinced of it. And do you know why? Because, like you, I believe in Jesus Christ. And I think Daniela was very brave when she spoke to us about this. I believe in Jesus Christ and that is why I tell you this. It is he who continually renews in me this hope, it is he who continually renews my outlook. It is he who awakens in me, in each one of us, the wonder of enjoying, the charm of dreaming, the delight of working together. It is he who continually invites me to a conversion of heart. Yes, my friends, I say this because in Jesus I have found the one who is able to bring out the best in me. Hand in hand with him, we can move forward, hand in hand with him we can begin again and again, hand in hand with him we can say: it is a lie to believe that the only way to live, or to be young, is to entrust oneself to drug dealers or others who do nothing but sow destruction and death. This is a lie and we say it holding on to Jesus’ hand. It is also hand in hand with Jesus Christ, with the Lord, that we can say: it is a lie that the only way to live as young people here is in poverty and exclusion; in the exclusion of opportunities, in the exclusion of spaces, in the exclusion of training and education, in the exclusion of hope. It is Jesus Christ who refutes all attempts to render you useless or to be mere mercenaries of other people’s ambitions. They are ambitions which exclude you, to use you in the areas I mentioned, which you know well, and which end up destroying. And the only one that can grab me firmly by the hand is Jesus Christ; he can convert this wealth into hope.

You have asked me for a word of hope, and the one word I have to give you, which is the foundation of everything, is Jesus Christ. When everything seems too much, when it seems that the world is crashing down on you, embrace his Cross, draw close to him and please, never let go of his hand, even if they are dragging you; and, if you should fall, allow him to lift you up. Mountain climbers have a lovely song which I like to repeat to young people. As they go up the mountain they sing: “In the art of climbing upwards, the triumph is not in not falling but rather in not staying down on the ground”. This is the art, and, who is the only one who can take you by the hand so that you are not left lying on the ground? Jesus Christ is the only one. Jesus Christ, who sometimes sends a brother or sister to speak to you or help you. Don’t hide your hand when you have fallen, do not say to him: “Don’t look at me, I am covered in mud. Don’t look at me, I am without hope”. You have only to let him grab your hand and you his, and then that richness which is inside you, which is covered in mud, and which you have given up on, will begin, through hope, to bear fruit. But always holding onto Jesus’ hand. This is the way, do not forget: “In the art of climbing upwards, the triumph is not in not falling but rather in not staying down on the ground”. Never allow yourselves to stay down, fallen on the ground! Never! Agreed? And if you see a friend who slipped up in life and has fallen, go and offer him or her your hand, but do so with dignity. Put yourself on their level, listen to them and don’t say: “I have the solution for you”. No, as a friend, slowly give them strength by your words, give them strength by your listening, that medicine which sadly is being forgotten: “the therapy of listening”. Let them speak, let them share their experience, and then little by little, they will offer you their hand, and, in the name of Jesus Christ, you can help them. But if you go in suddenly and begin to give them a sermon, going on about the same thing, well then, he or she will be worse off than before. Am I clear? [They reply: “Yes”]. Never let go of Jesus’ hand, never leave him; and if you do move away from him, get up and keep moving forwards, he understands what you are going through. Hand in hand with Jesus it is possible to live fully, by holding his hand it is possible to believe that life is worth the effort, it is worth giving of your best, to be leaven, salt and light among friends, in neighbourhoods, communities, and families. For this reason, dear friends, holding the hand of Jesus I ask you to not let yourselves be excluded, do not allow yourselves to be devalued, do not let them treat you like a commodity. For this Jesus have us good advice, so that we would not be left excluded, left without value, treated as a commodity: “Be astute as serpents but humble as doves”. These two virtues go together. Young people do not lack a lively mind but they do sometimes lack that astuteness which would prevent them from being naive. The two things: astuteness but with simplicity and goodness. Of course, on this journey you may perhaps not be able to have the latest car model at the door, you will not have pockets filled with money, but you will have something that no one can take away from you, which is the experience of being loved, embraced and accompanied. It is the delight of enjoying an encounter, the delight of dreaming and desiring encounter among everyone. It is the experience of being family, of feeling oneself as part of a community. It is the experience of being able to look at the world in the face, with your head held up high, without the car, without the money, but with your head held high: this is dignity. Three words we want to repeat: value, because you have been made valuable; hope, because we want to be open to hope; and dignity. Let us repeat these three words: value, hope and dignity. It is the value, the worth that God has given you. You are the wealth of Mexico. The hope and dignity which Jesus Christ gives you means not allowing “your backs to be massaged” and not allowing yourselves to be used as commodities to fill the pockets of other people.

Today the Lord continues to call you, he continues to draw you to him, just as he did with the Indian, Juan Diego. He invites you to build a shrine. A shrine that is not a physical place but rather a community, a shrine called “Parish”, a shrine called, “Nation”. Being a community, a family, and knowing that we are citizens is one of the best antidotes to all that threatens us, because it makes us feel that we are a part of the great family of God. This is not an invitation to flee and enclose ourselves, to escape from the threats that exist in life or to escape from challenges, but, on the contrary, it is an invitation to go out and to invite others, to go out and proclaim to others that being young in Mexico is the greatest wealth, and consequently, it cannot be sacrificed. For this great value of ours is capable of hope and it gives us dignity. Again these three words: value, hope and dignity. But it is a value, a richness, which God has given us and which we have to make grow.

Jesus, who gives us hope, would never ask us to be assassins; rather, he calls us disciples, he calls us friends. Jesus would never send us out to death, but rather everything in him speaks of life. A life in a family, life in a community; families and communities for the good of society. And here, Rosario, I refer to what you said, something really beautiful: “In the family we learn closeness”. In the family we learn solidarity, how to share, to discern, to walk ahead with each other’s problems, to fight and to make up, to argue and to embrace and to kiss. The family is the first school of the nation, and in the family you will find that richness and value that you have. The family is like the custodian of that great value, in the family you will find hope, for Jesus is there, and in the family you will have dignity. Never, never put the family to one side; the family is the founding stone upon which a great nation is built. You are so valuable, you have hope and you dream – Rosario also spoke of dreaming – “Do you dream of having a family?” They reply: “Yes”].

Dear brothers and sisters, you are the wealth of this country, and when you doubt this, look to Jesus Christ, who is the hope, he who destroys all efforts to make you useless or mere instruments of other people’s ambitions.
