Dear Brother Bishops,
While we walk this Lenten journey towards the Resurrection of the Lord united with the whole Church, I wish to extend to you, dear Archbishops and Bishops of Nigeria, a fraternal greeting, which I extend to the beloved Christian communities entrusted to your pastoral care. I would also like to share some thoughts with you on the current situation in your country.
Nigeria, known as the “African giant”, with its more than 160 million inhabitants, is set to play a primary role, not only in Africa but in the world at large. In recent years, it has experienced robust growth in the economic sphere and has again reasserted itself on the world stage as an attractive market, on account of its natural resources as well as its commercial potential. It is now considered officially the single largest African economy. It has also distinguished itself as a political player widely committed to the resolution of crisis situations in the continent.
At the same time, your nation has had to confront considerable problems, among them new and violent forms of extremism and fundamentalism on ethnic, social and religious grounds. Many Nigerians have been killed, wounded or mutilated, kidnapped and deprived of everything: their loved ones, their land, their means of subsistence, their dignity and their rights. Many have not been able to return to their homes. Believers, both Christian and Muslim, have experienced a common tragic outcome, at the hands of people who claim to be religious, but who instead abuse religion, to make of it an ideology for their own distorted interests of exploitation and murder.
I would like to assure you and all who suffer of my closeness. Every day I remember you in my prayers and I repeat here, for your encouragement and comfort, the consoling words of the Lord Jesus, which must always resound in our hearts: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (Jn14:27).
Peace – as you know so well – is not only the absence of conflict or the result of political compromise or fatalistic resignation. Peace is for us a gift which comes from on high; it is Jesus Christ himself, the Prince of Peace, who has made of two peoples one (cf. Eph 2:14). And only the man or woman who treasures the peace of Christ as a guiding light and way of life can become a peacemaker (cf. Mt 5:9).
At the same time, peace is a daily endeavour, a courageous and authentic effort to favour reconciliation, to promote experiences of sharing, to extend bridges of dialogue, to serve the weakest and the excluded. In a word, peace consists in building up a “culture of encounter”.
And so I wish here to express my heartfelt thanks to you, because in the midst of so many trials and sufferings the Church in Nigeria does not cease to witness to hospitality, mercy and forgiveness. How can we fail to remember the priests, religious men and women, missionaries and catechists who, despite untold sacrifices, never abandoned their flock, but remained at their service as good and faithful heralds of the Gospel? To them, most particularly, I would like to express my solidarity, and to say: do not grow tired of doing what is right!
We give thanks to the Lord for them, as for so many men and women of every social, cultural and religious background, who with great willingness stand up in concrete ways to every form of violence, and whose efforts are directed at favouring a more secure and just future for all. They offer us moving testimonies, which, as Pope Benedict XVI recalled at the end of the Synod for Africa, show “the power of the Spirit to transform the hearts of victims and their persecutors and thus to re-establish fraternity” (Africae Munus, 20).
Dear Brother Bishops, in perseverance and without becoming discouraged, go forward on the way of peace (cf. Lk 1:79). Accompany the victims! Come to the aid of the poor! Teach the youth! Become promoters of a more just and fraternal society!
I gladly impart to you my Apostolic Blessing, which I ask you to extend to priests, religious, missionaries, catechists, lay faithful and above all to those suffering members of the Body of Christ.
May the Resurrection of the Lord bring conversion, reconciliation and peace to all the people of Nigeria! I commend you to Mary, Queen of Africa, and I ask you also to pray for me.

Cari Fratelli nell’Episcopato,
Mentre con tutta la Chiesa compiamo il cammino quaresimale verso la Resurrezione del Signore, desidero far giungere a Voi, cari Arcivescovi e Vescovi, un fraterno saluto, che estendo alle amate comunità cristiane affidate alle vostre cure pastorali. Desidero anche farvi partecipi di alcune riflessioni in merito alla situazione vissuta attualmente nel vostro Paese.
La Nigeria, conosciuta come il “gigante dell’Africa”, con oltre 160 milioni di abitanti, è destinata a giocare un ruolo di primo piano non solo in quel Continente, ma nel mondo intero. In questi ultimi anni ha sperimentato una forte crescita sul piano economico e si è proposta sulla scena internazionale come un mercato di grande interesse sia per le sue risorse naturali sia per le sue potenzialità commerciali. E’ ormai considerata ufficialmente la più grande economia africana. Si è inoltre distinta come interlocutore politico per l’impegno profuso nella risoluzione di situazioni di crisi nel Continente.
In pari tempo, la vostra Nazione si è dovuta confrontare con gravi difficoltà, tra le quali, nuove e violente forme di estremismo e di fondamentalismo, su base etnica, sociale e religiosa. Molti nigeriani sono stati uccisi, feriti e mutilati, sequestrati e privati di ogni cosa: dei propri cari, della propria terra, dei mezzi di sussistenza, della loro dignità, dei loro diritti. Tanti non hanno più potuto fare ritorno alle loro case. Credenti, sia cristiani che musulmani, sono stati accomunati da una tragica fine, per mano di persone che si proclamano religiose, ma che abusano della religione per farne una ideologia da piegare ai propri interessi di sopraffazione e di morte.
Io vorrei assicurarvi che sono vicino a voi e a quanti soffrono. Ogni giorno vi porto nella preghiera e qui ripeto, a vostro conforto e incoraggiamento, le consolanti parole del Signore Gesù che devono sempre risuonare nei nostri cuori: « Vi lascio la pace, vi do la mia pace » (Gv 14,27).
La pace – come voi sapete bene – non è solo l’assenza di conflitti o risultato di qualche compromesso politico, o fatalismo rassegnato. La pace, per noi, è un dono che viene dall’Alto, è Gesù Cristo stesso, Principe della Pace, Colui che ha fatto dei due un popolo solo (cfr. Ef. 2,14). E solo chi ha la pace di Cristo nel cuore, come orizzonte e stile di vita, può diventare un artigiano della pace (cfr. Mt. 5,9).
Nello stesso tempo, la pace è impegno quotidiano, coraggioso ed autentico per favorire la riconciliazione, promuovere esperienze di condivisione, gettare ponti di dialogo, servire i più deboli e gli esclusi. In una parola, la pace consiste nel costruire una “cultura dell’incontro”.
Per questo voglio qui esprimerVi un sincero ringraziamento, perché in mezzo a tante prove e sofferenze, la Chiesa in Nigeria non cessa di testimoniare l’accoglienza, la misericordia e il perdono. Come non ricordare i sacerdoti, i religiosi e le religiose, i missionari e i catechisti che, pur tra indicibili sacrifici, non hanno abbandonato il proprio gregge, ma sono rimasti al suo servizio, buoni e fedeli annunciatori del Vangelo? Ad essi, in particolare, vorrei esprimere la mia prossimità e dire: non stancatevi di fare il bene!
Per loro ringraziamo il Signore, come per molte persone di ogni estrazione sociale, culturale e religiosa che, con grande determinazione, si impegnano concretamente contro ogni forma di violenza e in favore di un avvenire più sicuro e più giusto per tutti. Essi ci offrono testimonianze commoventi che, come ci ha ricordato papa Benedetto XVI al termine del Sinodo per l’Africa, mostrano «la potenza dello Spirito che trasforma i cuori delle vittime e dei loro carnefici per ristabilire la fraternità» (Africae Munus, 20).
Cari Fratelli nell’Episcopato: con perseveranza e senza scoraggiamenti andate avanti sulla via della pace (cfr. Lc. 1,79)! Accompagnate le vittime! Soccorrete i poveri! Educate i giovani! Fatevi promotori di una società più giusta e solidale!
Di cuore Vi imparto la Benedizione Apostolica e Vi chiedo di farne partecipi sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose, missionari, catechisti, fedeli laici e soprattutto le membra sofferenti del Corpo di Cristo.
La Resurrezione del Signore possa essere apportatrice di conversione, di riconciliazione e di pace per l’intero popolo della Nigeria! Vi affido a Maria, Regina dell’Africa. Pregate anche per me.
