Preghiera Ecumenica nella Chiesa Patriarcale di San Giorgio al Phanar

Incontro con Sua Santità Bartolomeo I nel Palazzo Patriarcale al Phanar

Alle ore 18.00 oggi il Santo Padre è arrivato al Phanar, sede del Patriarcato Ecumenico, per la Preghiera Ecumenica.
Papa Francesco e il Patriarca Ecumenico di Costantinopoli, Sua Santità Bartolomeo I, sono entrati insieme nella Chiesa Patriarcale di San Giorgio, accolti dal canto d’ingresso. Dopo un momento di preghiera per il Papa, per il Patriarca e per l’unità delle Sante Chiese di Dio, il Patriarca e il Papa hanno pronunciato i rispettivi discorsi, quindi hanno recitato insieme il Padre Nostro, prima di impartire la benedizione: il Papa in latino e il Patriarca in greco.

 Ἐν δοξολογίᾳ πρός τόν Πανάγαθον ἐν Τριάδι Θεόν ὑποδεχόμεθα Ὑμᾶς καί τήν τιμίαν Ὑμῶν Συνοδείαν εἰς τόν ἱερόν τοῦτον χῶρον, ἔνθα ἡ Καθέδρα τῶν ἐπισκόπων τῆς ἱστορικῆς καί μαρτυρικῆς ταύτης Ἐκκλησίας, τῆς ἐπιφορτισθείσης ὑπό τῆς Θείας Προνοίας μετά τοῦ πολυευθύνου λειτουργήματος τῆς Πρωτοθρόνου τῶν κατά τόπους ἁγιωτάτων Ὀρθοδόξων Ἐκκλησιῶν. Ἡ ἐνταῦθα ἔλευσις Ὑμῶν, τό πρῶτον ἀπό τῆς προσφάτου ἀναρρήσεως τῆς Ὑμετέρας Ἁγιότητος εἰς τόν θρόνον τῆς «προκαθημένης τῆς ἀγάπης», ἀποτελεῖ συνέχειαν ἀναλόγων ἐπισκέψεων τῶν τετιμημένων προκατόχων Ὑμῶν Παύλου του Ϛ΄, Ἰωάννου Παύλου τοῦ Β΄ καί Βενεδίκτου τοῦ ΙϚ΄, μαρτυροῦσα τήν βούλησιν Ὑμῶν καί τῆς ἁγιωτάτης Ἐκκλησίας τῆς Ρώμης, ὅπως συνεχισθῇ ἡ ἀδελφική μετά τῆς ἡμετέρας Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας σταθερά πορεία πρός ἀποκατάστασιν τῆς πλήρους κοινωνίας μεταξύ τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν ἡμῶν. Χαιρετίζομεν, ὅθεν, μεθ᾿ ἱκανοποιήσεως καί ἐκτιμήσεως μεγάλης τήν ἐνταῦθα ἔλευσιν τῆς Ὑμετέρας Ἁγιότητος ὡς γεγονός ἱστορικόν καί πλῆρες οἰωνῶν ἀγαθῶν διά τό μέλλον.

Ὁ ἱερός οὗτος χῶρος, ἐν τῷ ὁποίῳ ἐπί αἰῶνας ἐν μέσῳ ποικίλων ἱστορικῶν κλυδωνισμῶν οἱ ἑκάστοτε Οἰκουμενικοί Πατριάρχαι ἐτέλεσαν καί τελοῦν τό ἱερόν Μυστήριον τῆς Θείας Εὐχαριστίας, ἀποτελεῖ διάδοχον ἄλλων ἐπιφανῶν λατρευτικῶν χώρων ἐν τῇ Πόλει ταύτῃ, τούς ὁποίους ἐλάμπρυναν διαπρεπεῖς ἐκκλησιαστικαί μορφαί ἀνήκουσαι ἤδη εἰς τήν χορείαν τῶν μεγάλων Πατέρων τῆς κατά τήν οἰκουμένην Ἐκκλησίας. Τοιοῦτοι ὑπῆρξαν καί οἱ προκάτοχοι τῆς ἡμετέρας Μετριότητος ἅγιοι Γρηγόριος ὁ Θεολόγος καί Ἰωάννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος, τῶν ὁποίων τά ἱερά λείψανα ἀναπαύονται ἤδη ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τούτῳ ναῷ, ὁμοῦ μετ᾿ ἐκείνων τοῦ Μεγάλου Βασιλείου, τῆς κυρωσάσης τόν Τόμον τῆς Δ΄ Οἰκουμενικῆς Συνόδου Μεγαλομάρτυρος Εὐφημίας καί ἄλλων ἁγίων τῆς Ἐκκλησίας – τοῦτο δέ χάρις εἰς τήν ἐκ μέρους τῆς Ἐκκλησίας τῆς Ρώμης εὐγενῆ ἀπόδοσιν αὐτῶν εἰς τό Οἰκουμενικόν Πατριαρχεῖον. Ἄγοντες ἐφέτος τήν ἐπέτειον τῆς συμπληρώσεως δέκα ἐτῶν ἀπό τοῦ εὐλογημένου τούτου γεγονότος ἐκφράζομεν πρός τήν Ὑμετέραν Ἁγιότητα τάς θερμάς ἡμῶν εὐχαριστίας διά τήν φιλάδελφον χειρονομίαν ταύτην τῆς Ὑμετέρας Ἐκκλησίας πρός τό ἡμέτρον Πατριαρχεῖον. Οἱ ἱεροί οὗτοι Πατέρες, ἐπί τῆς διδασκαλίας τῶν ὁποίων ῲκοδομήθη ἡ κοινή κατά τήν πρώτην χιλιετίαν πίστις ἡμῶν, εἴησαν πρεσβευταί πρός Κύριον, ἵνα ἐπανεύρωμεν τήν πλήρη μεταξύ τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν ἡμῶν κοινωνίαν, ἐκπληροῦντες οὕτω τό ἅγιον θέλημα Αὐτοῦ εἰς καιρούς κρισίμους διά τήν ἀνθρωπότητα καί τόν κόσμον. Ἐκφράζοντες καί αὗθις τήν χαράν καί εὐχαριστίαν τῆς ἁγιωτάτης Ἐκκλησίας Κωνσταντινουπόλεως καί τῆς ἡμετέρας Μετριότητος ἐπί τῇ ἐπισήμῳ ταύτῃ καί φιλαδέλφῳ ἐπισκέψει τῆς Ὑμετέρας Ἁγιότητος, εὐχόμεθα Αὐτῇ καί τῇ τιμίᾳ Αὐτῆς Συνοδείᾳ εὐλογημένην κατά πάντα παρά Κυρίου τήν ἐν τῷ μέσῳ ἡμῶν παραμονήν Ὑμῶν εἰς περαιτέρω σύσφιγξιν τῶν ἀδελφικῶν ἡμῶν δεσμῶν πρός δόξαν τοῦ ἁγίου Αὐτοῦ ὀνόματος.

Your Holiness,

In offering glory to the all-good God in Trinity, we welcome You and Your honorable entourage to this sacred place, the hierarchal See of the historical and martyric Church charged by divine providence with a profoundly responsible ministry as being the First-Throne among the local most holy Orthodox Churches. We welcome You with joy, honor and gratitude because You have deemed it proper to direct Your steps from the Old Rome to the New Rome, symbolically bridging West and East through this movement, while translating the love of the Chief Apostle to his brother, the First-Called Apostle.

Your advent here, being the first since the recent election of Your Holiness to the throne that "presides in love," constitutes a continuation of similar visits by Your eminent predecessors Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, but also bears witness to Your own will and that of the most holy Church of Rome to maintain the fraternal and stable advance with the Orthodox Church for the restoration of full communion between our Churches. Therefore, it is with great satisfaction and appreciation that we greet the arrival here of Your Holiness as an historical event filled with favorable signs for the future.

This sacred space, where in the midst of diverse historical challenges Ecumenical Patriarchs have for centuries celebrated and celebrate the holy Mystery of the Divine Eucharist, constitutes a successor to other illustrious places of worship in this City, which have been brightened by renowned ecclesiastical personalities already adorning the choir of great Fathers of the universal Church. Such luminaries include our predecessors Saints Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom, whose sacred relics now lie in this holy church, thanks to their gracious return to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Church of Rome; their relics are alongside those of Basil the Great and Euphemia the Great Martyr, who validated the Tome of the Fourth Ecumenical Council, as well as other saints of the Church. This year marks the tenth anniversary since the blessed return of the relics of St. Gregory and St. John; wherefore, we express to Your Holiness our fervent thanks for this fraternal gesture on behalf of Your Church to our Patriarchate. May these holy Fathers, on whose teaching our common faith of the first millennium was founded, intercede for us to the Lord so that we may rediscover the full union of our Churches, thereby fulfilling His divine will in crucial times for humanity and the world. For, according to St. John Chrysostom: "This is what ultimately holds the faithful together and upholds love; indeed, this is precisely why Christ said that we should be one." (Homily on Philippians 4.3 PG62.208)

We express once again the joy and gratitude of the most holy Church of Constantinople and of ourselves on this formal and fraternal visit of Your Holiness, and we wish You and Your honorable entourage an altogether blessed sojourn among us so that we may further increase our fraternal relations for the glory of His name.

glorificando il Dio Trino più che Buono, accogliamo Voi ed il Vostro venerabile Seguito, in questo luogo sacro, qui dove è la Cattedra dei vescovi di questa storica Chiesa martire, incaricata dalla Divina Provvidenza del ministero di alta responsabilità di Primo Trono delle Santissime Chiese Ortodosse Locali. Vi accogliamo con gioia, onore e riconoscenza, poiché avete avuto la bontà di portare i Vostri passi dalla Antica alla Nuova Roma, gettando un ponte simbolico, con questo Vostro gesto, tra l’Occidente e l’Oriente, Voi latore di amore del Protocorifeo verso il suo proprio fratello, il Primo Chiamato.

La Vostra venuta qui, primo atto dalla recente ascesa di Vostra Santità al trono di "colei che presiede nella carità", costituisce un proseguo di analoghe visite dei Vostri venerabilissimi Predecessori, Paolo VI, Giovanni Paolo II e Benedetto XVI, testimoniando così la volontà Vostra e della Santissima Chiesa di Roma, di proseguire il fraterno costante cammino con la nostra Chiesa Ortodossa, per il ristabilimento della completa comunione tra le nostre Chiese. Salutiamo dunque, con piacere e grande considerazione, la venuta di Vostra Santità qui, come un fatto storico e ricco di buoni auspici per il futuro.

Questo sacro luogo, nel quale da secoli, tra vari sconvolgimenti storici, i Patriarchi Ecumenici hanno sempre celebrato e celebrano il sacro Mistero della Divina Eucarestia, è erede di altri luoghi di culto illustri in questa Città, ai quali hanno dato lustro eminenti figure ecclesiastiche, appartenenti alla schiera dei grandi Padri della Chiesa Universale. Tra questi ci sono i predecessori della nostra Umiltà, i santi Gregorio il Teologo e Giovanni Crisostomo, le cui sacre Reliquie riposano in questo sacro tempio, assieme a quelle di San Basilio il Grande, di Santa Eufemia megalomartire, colei che ha confermato il Tomo del Quarto Concilio Ecumenico e di altri santi della Chiesa – e ciò grazie alla nobile restituzione di esse al Patriarcato Ecumenico, da parte della Chiesa di Roma. Celebrando quest’anno il compimento del decimo anniversario di tale benedetto avvenimento, esprimiamo a Vostra Santità i nostri calorosi ringraziamenti per quel gesto fraterno della Vostra Chiesa nei confronti del nostro Patriarcato Ecumenico. Questi Santi Padri, sul cui insegnamento si è fondata la nostra comune fede durante il primo millennio, siano intercessori presso il Signore, affinché possiamo ritrovare la piena comunione tra le nostre Chiese, compiendo così la Sua santa volontà, in tempi difficili per l’umanità ed il mondo. Poiché come dice San Giovanni Crisostomo: : "Questo è ciò che naturalmente salda insieme i fedeli e preserva l’amore; per questo il Cristo dice, ché siano uno". (Ai Fil. 4,3 P.G. 62,208)

Esprimendo ancora la gioia e il ringraziamento della santissima Chiesa di Costantinopoli e della nostra Umiltà per tale visita ufficiale e fraterna di Vostra Santità, auguriamo a Voi ed al Vostro venerabile Seguito, che la Vostra permanenza in mezzo a noi sia benedetta in tutto dal Signore, per un ulteriore rinsaldamento dei nostri legami fraterni, a gloria del Suo santo nome.

Dando gloria al Bondadoso Dios Trino os acogemos y a vuestro venerable Séquito en este lugar sagrado, donde está la Cátedra de los obispos de esta histórica y mártir Iglesia, que tiene asignado por la Divina Providencia el servicio tan responsable de la Primacía entre las Santísimas Iglesias Ortodoxas locales. Os acogemos con alegría, honor y reconocimiento, porque gustosamente habéis dirigido vuestros pasos desde la Antigua la Nueva Roma, unificando simbólicamente con este movimiento vuestro el Occidente y el Oriente, portador del amor del Protocorifeo al Primer Llamado, su hermano carnal.

Vuestra venida aquí, por primera vez desde la reciente elevación de Vuestra Santidad al Trono de la "primacía del amor", constituye una continuación a análogas visitas de vuestros venerables predecesores Pablo VI, Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI, testimoniando vuestra voluntad como también la de la Santísima Iglesia de Roma, de continuar el firme camino fraternal con nuestra Iglesia Ortodoxa para el restablecimiento de la plena comunión entre nuestras Iglesias. Saludamos, por eso, con mucha satisfacción y estima la venida aquí de Vuestra Santidad, como un evento histórico y lleno de buenos auspicios para el futuro.

Este sagrado lugar, en el cual durante siglos a través de muchísimas visicitudes históricas, cada uno de los Patriarcas Ecuménicos han celebrado y celebran el sagrado Misterio de la Divina Eucaristía, constituye un sucesor de otros distinguidos lugares de culto en esta Ciudad, que han iluminado ilustres figuras eclesiásticas que pertenecen ya al coro de los grandes Padres de la Iglesia universal. Tales eran también los predecesores de nuestra Humildad, los Santos Gregorio el Teólogo y Juan Crisóstomo, las reliquias de los cuales descansan ya en este sagrado templo, junto con aquellas de Basilio el Grande, de la Gran Mártir Eufemia que convalidó el Tomos del V Concilio Ecuménico y otros santos de la Iglesia – eso gracias a la gentil restitución de ellas por parte de la Iglesia de Roma al Patriarcado Ecuménico. Este año cumplimos el décimo aniversario de este evento y expresamos a Vuestra Santidad nuestros calurosos agradecimientos por esto gesto fraternal de Vuestra Iglesia hacia nuestro Patriarcado Ecuménico. Que estos Padres sagrados, sobre la enseñanza de los cuales fue construida nuestra común fe durante el primer milenio, sean intercesores ante el Señor, para que encontremos nuevamente la plena comunión entre nuestras Iglesias, cumpliendo así Su santa voluntad en tiempos cruciales para la humanidad y el mundo. Santità, Fratello carissimo,

la sera porta sempre con sé un sentimento misto di gratitudine per il giorno vissuto e di trepidante affidamento di fronte alla notte che scende. Questa sera il mio animo è colmo di gratitudine a Dio, che mi concede di trovarmi qui a pregare insieme con Vostra Santità e con questa Chiesa sorella, al termine di una intensa giornata di visita apostolica; e al tempo stesso il mio animo è in attesa del giorno che liturgicamente abbiamo iniziato: la festa di sant’Andrea Apostolo, che di questa Chiesa è il Fondatore e il Patrono.

Attraverso le parole del profeta Zaccaria, il Signore ci ha donato ancora una volta, in questa preghiera vespertina, il fondamento che sta alla base del nostro protenderci tra un oggi e un domani, la salda roccia su cui possiamo muovere insieme i nostri passi con gioia e con speranza; questo roccioso fondamento è la promessa del Signore: «Ecco, io salvo il mio popolo dall’oriente e dall’occidente … nella fedeltà e nella giustizia» (8,7.8).

Sì, venerato e caro Fratello Bartolomeo, mentre Le esprimo il mio sentito "grazie" per la Sua fraterna accoglienza, sento che la nostra gioia è più grande perché la sorgente è oltre, non è in noi, non è nel nostro impegno e nei nostri sforzi, che pure doverosamente ci sono, ma è nel comune affidamento alla fedeltà di Dio, che pone il fondamento per la ricostruzione del suo tempio che è la Chiesa (cfr Zc 8,9). «Ecco il seme della pace» (Zc 8,12); ecco il seme della gioia. Quella pace e quella gioia che il mondo non può dare, ma che il Signore Gesù ha promesso ai suoi discepoli, e ha donato loro da Risorto, nella potenza dello Spirito Santo.

Andrea e Pietro hanno ascoltato questa promessa, hanno ricevuto questo dono. Erano fratelli di sangue, ma l’incontro con Cristo li ha trasformati in fratelli nella fede e nella carità. E in questa sera gioiosa, in questa preghiera vigiliare vorrei dire soprattutto: fratelli nella speranza - e la speranza non delude! Quale grazia, Santità, poter essere fratelli nella speranza del Signore Risorto! Quale grazia – e quale responsabilità – poter camminare insieme in questa speranza, sorretti dall’intercessione dei santi fratelli Apostoli Andrea e Pietro! E sapere che questa comune speranza non delude, perché è fondata non su di noi e sulle nostre povere forze, ma sulla fedeltà di Dio.

Con questa gioiosa speranza, colma di gratitudine e di trepidante attesa, formulo a Vostra Santità, a tutti i presenti, e alla Chiesa di Costantinopoli il mio cordiale e fraterno augurio per la festa del Santo Patrono. E vi chiedo un favore: di benedire me e la Chiesa di Roma.

Your Holiness, my dear Brother,

Each evening brings a mixed feeling of gratitude for the day which is ending and of hope-filled trust as night falls. This evening my heart is full of gratitude to God who allows me to be here in prayer with Your Holiness and with this sister Church after an eventful day during my Apostolic Visit. At the same time my heart awaits the day which we have already begun liturgically: the Feast of the Apostle Saint Andrew, Founder and Patron of this Church.

In the words of the prophet Zechariah, the Lord gives us anew in this evening prayer, the foundation that sustains our moving forward from one day to the next, the solid rock upon which we advance together in joy and hope. The foundation rock is the Lord’s promise: "Behold, I will save my people from the countries of the east and from the countries of the west… in faithfulness and in righteousness" (8:7.8).

Yes, my venerable and dear Brother Bartholomew, as I express my heartfelt "thank you" for your fraternal welcome, I sense that our joy is greater because its source is from beyond; it is not in us, not in our commitment, not in our efforts – that are certainly necessary – but in our shared trust in God’s faithfulness which lays the foundation for the reconstruction of his temple that is the Church (cf. Zech 8:9). "For there shall be a sowing of peace" (Zech 8:12); truly, a sowing of joy. It is the joy and the peace that the world cannot give, but which the Lord Jesus promised to his disciples and, as the Risen One, bestowed upon them in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Andrew and Peter heard this promise; they received this gift. They were blood brothers, yet their encounter with Christ transformed them into brothers in faith and charity. In this joyful evening, at this prayer vigil, I want to emphasize this; they became brothers in hope – and hope does not disappoint us! What a grace, Your Holiness, to be brothers in the hope of the Risen Lord! What a grace, and what a responsibility, to walk together in this hope, sustained by the intercession of the holy Apostles and brothers, Andrew and Peter! And to know that this shared hope does non deceive us because it is founded, not upon us or our poor efforts, but rather upon God’s faithfulness.

With this joyful hope, filled with gratitude and eager expectation, I extend to Your Holiness and to all present, and to the Church of Constantinople, my warm and fraternal best wishes on the Feast of your holy Patron. And I ask a favour of you: to bless me and the Church of Rome.

Santidad, querido Hermano,

El atardecer trae siempre un doble sentimiento, el de gratitud por el día vivido y el de la ansiada confianza ante el caer de la noche. Esta tarde mí corazón está colmado de gratitud a Dios, que me ha concedido estar aquí para rezar junto con Vuestra Santidad y con esta Iglesia hermana, al término de una intensa jornada de visita apostólica; y, al mismo tiempo, mi corazón está a la espera del día que litúrgicamente hemos comenzado: la fiesta de San Andrés Apóstol, que es el Patrono y Fundador de esta Iglesia.

En esta oración vespertina, a través de las palabras del profeta Zacarías, el Señor nos ha dado una vez más el fundamento que está a la base de nuestro avanzar entre un hoy y un mañana, la roca firme sobre la que podemos mover juntos nuestros pasos con alegría y esperanza; este fundamento rocoso es la promesa del Señor: «Aquí estoy yo para salvar a mi pueblo de Oriente a Occidente... en fidelidad y justicia» (8,7.8).

Sí, venerado y querido Hermano Bartolomé, mientras expreso mi sentido «gracias» por su acogida fraterna, siento que nuestra alegría es más grande porque la fuente está más allá; no está en nosotros, no en nuestro compromiso y en nuestros esfuerzos, que también deben hacerse, sino en la común confianza en la fidelidad de Dios, que pone el fundamento para la reconstrucción de su templo que es la Iglesia (cf. Za 8,9). «¡He aquí la semilla de la paz!» (Za 8,12); ¡he aquí la semilla de la alegría! Esa paz y esa alegría que el mundo no puede dar, pero que el Señor Jesús ha prometido a sus discípulos, y se la ha entregado como Resucitado, en el poder del Espíritu Santo.

Andrés y Pedro han escuchado esta promesa, han recibido este don. Eran hermanos de sangre, pero el encuentro con Cristo los ha transformado en hermanos en la fe y en la caridad. Y en esta tarde gozosa, en esta vigilia de oración, quisiera decir sobre todo: hermanos en la esperanza, y la esperanza no defrauda. Qué gracia, Santidad, poder ser hermanos en la esperanza del Señor Resucitado. Qué gracia – y qué responsabilidad – poder caminar juntos en esta esperanza, sostenidos por la intercesión de los santos hermanos, los Apóstoles Andrés y Pedro. Y saber que esta esperanza común no defrauda, porque no se funda en nosotros y nuestras pobres fuerzas, sino en la fidelidad de Dios.

Con esta esperanza gozosa, llena de gratitud y anhelante espera, expreso a Vuestra Santidad, a todos los presentes y a la Iglesia de Constantinopla mis mejores deseos, cordiales y fraternos, en la fiesta del santo Patrón. Y le pido un favor: Me bendiga y bendiga la Iglesia de Roma.

Παναγιὼτατε, αγαπητέ Aδελφέ,

η βραδιά φέρνει πάντα μαζί της ενα μικτό αίσθημα ευγνωμοσύνης γιά την ημέρα που βιώθηκε καί τρεμάμενη εμπιστοσύνη μποστά στην νύχτα που πέφτει. Απόψε η ψυχή μου είναι γεμάτη ευγνωμοσύνη προς τον Θεό, που με αξιώνει να βρεθώ εδώ και να προσευχηθώ μαζί με την Παναγιότητα Σας και με αυτήν την αδελφή Εκκλησία, στο πέρας μιάς έντονης ημέρας αποστολικής επίσκεψης, και συγχρόνως η ψυχή μου είναι σε αναμονή της ημέρας που ήδη αρχήσαμε λειτουργικά: της εορτής του Αγίου Αποστόλου Ανδρέου, Ιδριτού και Προστάτου αυτής της Εκκλησίας.

Διά μέσου των λόγων του Προφήτου Ζαχαρίου, ο Κύριος μάς εδώρησε ακόμα μια φορά, σε αυτήν την εσπερινή προσευχή, το θεμέλιο που είναι η βάση της προέκτασης μας προς το ενα σήμερον και προς το ενα αύριον, ο στερεός βράχος επι του οποίου μπορούμε να οδηγήσουμε μαζί τα βήματα μας με χαρά και ελπίδα, αυτό το απο βράχο θεμέλιο, είναι η υπόσχεση του Κυρίου: «Ιδού εγώ σώζω τον λαόν μου απο γής ανατολών και απο γής δυσμών...εν αληθεία και δικαιοσύνη» (8, 7.8)

Μάλιστα, σεβάσμιε και αγαπητέ αδελφέ Βαρθολομαίε, ενώ εκφράζω το εγκάρδιο ευχαριστώ για την αδελφική Σας υποδοχή, αίσθανομαι οτι η χαρά μας είναι πιό μεγάλη γιατί η πηγή της βρίσκεται αλλού, οχι σε εμάς, οχι στο καθήκον μας και στις προσπαθείες μας, οι οποίες βεβαίως υπάρχουν, αλλά στην κοινή αφοσίωση στην πιστότητα του Θεού, που θέτει το θεμέλιο για την ανασυγκρότησι του ναού του που εἰναι η Εκκλήσια (βλ Ζαχ. 8,9). «Ιδού ο σπόρος της ειρήνης» (Ζαχ 8.12), ιδού ο σπόρος της χαράς. Αυτή η ειρήνη και αυτή η χαρά που ο κόσμος δεν μπορεί να δώσει, αλλά που ο Κύριος Ιησούς υποσχέθηκε στους μαθητές του, και τους εδώρησε με την Ανάσταση του, δυνάμει του Παναγίου Πνέυματος.

Ο Ανδρέας και ο Πέτρος άκουσαν αυτήν την υπόσχεση, έλαβαν αυτήν την δωρεάν. Ήσαν αδελφοί εξ αίματος, αλλά η συνάντηση με τον Χριστό, τους μετέβαλε σε αδελφούς εν τη πίστη και εν τη αγάπη. Και σ'αυτήν την χαρμόσυνη βραδιά, σε αυτήν την προεόρτιαν προσευχήν θα ήθελα προ πάντων να πώ : αδελφοί στήν ελπίδα, και η ελπίδα δεν απογοητεύει !

Οποία χάρις, Παναγιώτατε, να μπορούμε να είμαστε αδελφοί εν τη ελπίδι του Αναστάντος Χριστού! Οποία χάρις, και οποία ευθύνη, να μπορούμε να βαδίζουμε μαζί σ'αυτήν την ελπίδα, ενισχυμένοι με την μεσιτεία των Αγίων αδελφών Αποστόλων Ανδρέα και Πέτρο! Γνωρίζοντας οτι αυτή η κοινή ελπίδα δεν θα μας απογοητεύσει, γιατί είναι θεμελιωμένη οχι επάνω στις πτωχές μας δυνάμεις, αλλἀ στην πιστότητα του Θεού.

Με αυτήν την χαρούμενην ελπίδα, γεμάτη ευγνώμοσυνη και τρεμάμενη αναμονή, εκφράζω προς την Παναγιώτητα Σας, προς όλους τους παρόντες, και προς την Εκκλησίαν της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως  την θερμήν μου αδελφικήν ευχήν επι τη εορτή του Αγίου Προστάτου Της. Και Σας ζητώ μια χάρη: να ευλογείσετε εμένα και την Εκκλησίαν της Ρώμης.

Al termine della Preghiera Ecumenica, il Papa e il Patriarca Ecumenico si sono incontrati in privato in una sala del Patriarcato. Quindi, dopo lo scambio dei doni e la presentazione delle rispettive Delegazioni, il Santo Padre ha lasciato il Patriarcato Ecumenico ed è rientrato in auto alla Rappresentanza Pontificia di Istanbul.
