Alle ore 9.00 di questa mattina, nella Basilica Vaticana, il Santo Padre Francesco ha incontrato il gruppo di fedeli di rito siro-malabarese convenuti a Roma per la canonizzazione, avvenuta ieri, di due nuovi santi indiani: Kuriakose Elias Chavara della Sacra Famiglia ed Eufrasia Eluvathingal del Sacro Cuore.
Riportiamo di seguito il testo del discorso che il Papa ha rivolto loro:
Discorso del Santo Padre
Cari fratelli e sorelle,
sono lieto di unirmi al vostro rendimento di grazie al Signore per la canonizzazione di due nuovi Santi indiani, provenienti dal Kerala. E colgo l’occasione per ringraziare la Chiesa in India, per ringraziare la Chiesa in Kerala, per tutta la forza apostolica, per la testimonianza di fede che voi avete! Ma grazie tante! Continuate così! Il Kerala è una terra tanto fertile di vocazioni consacrate, sacerdotali. Avanti così, lavorando con la vostra testimonianza. Ringrazio il Cardinale George Alencherry, i Vescovi, i sacerdoti le persone consacrate e tutti voi cari fedeli di rito siro-malabarese. E ringrazio anche per la sua presenza il Cardinale del rito siro-malankarese [Card. Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal, ndr], grazie! Voi sapete che il vostro Cardinale siro-malankarese è il più giovane del Collegio cardinalizio?
Voi siete convenuti a Roma così numerosi per questa singolare circostanza e avete potuto trascorrere giornate di fede e comunione ecclesiale, pregando anche sulle tombe degli apostoli. Possano questi momenti di festa e di intensa spiritualità aiutarvi a contemplare le opere meravigliose compiute dal Signore attraverso la vita e l’attività dei nuovi Santi.
Padre Kuriakose Elias Chavara e suor Eufrasia Eluvathingal, religiosa dell’Istituto femminile da lui fondato, ricordano a ciascuno di noi che l’amore di Dio è la fonte e la méta e il sostegno di ogni santità, mentre l’amore del prossimo è la più limpida manifestazione dell’amore verso il Signore. Infatti, padre Kuriakose Elias fu un religioso attivo e contemplativo che spese generosamente la sua vita per la Chiesa Siro-malabarese, operando all’insegna del motto "santificazione di sé e salvezza degli altri". Mentre suor Eufrasia visse in profonda unione con Dio, così che la sua vita di santità fu di esempio e sprone alla gente, che le diede il soprannome di "Madre orante". Per le suore questo: che siano suore oranti!
Cari fratelli e sorelle, vi aiutino questi nuovi Santi a far tesoro della loro lezione di vita evangelica. Seguitene le orme e imitatene, in modo particolare, l’amore a Gesù Eucaristia e alla Chiesa, per progredire sempre sulla via della santità. Con questo auspicio, che accompagno con la preghiera, rinnovo a tutti voi e ai vostri cari la Benedizione Apostolica. Grazie!

Dear brothers and sisters,
I am pleased to join you in giving thanks to the Lord for the canonization of two new Indian saints, both from the State of Kerala. I take this opportunity to thank the Church in India, the Church in Kerala, for all its apostolic vigour and for your witness to the Faith! My heartfelt gratitude! Keep up the good work! Kerala is rich in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Continue on this path, working through your witness. I thank Cardinal George Alencherry, the Bishops, priests, men and women religious, and each of you, dear brothers and sisters of the Syro-Malabar rite. I remember in a special way the Cardinal of the Syro- Malankara rite: thank you! Did you know that your Syro-Malankar Cardinal is the youngest member of the College of Cardinals?
You have come to Rome in great numbers on this very important occasion, and have been able to live days of faith and ecclesial communion, praying also at the tombs of the Apostles. May this time of celebration and intense spirituality help you to contemplate the marvellous works accomplished by the Lord in the lives and deeds of these new saints.
Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia Eluvathingal, who was a member of the religious Institute founded by him, remind each of us that God’s love is the source, the support and the goal of all holiness, while love of neighbour is the clearest manifestation of love for God. Father Kuriakose Elias was a religious, both active and contemplative, who generously gave his life for the Syro-Malabar Church, putting into action the maxim "sanctification of oneself and the salvation of others". For her part, Sister Euphrasia lived in profound union with God so much so that her life of holiness was an example and an encouragement to the people, who called her "Praying Mother". There are many consecrated religious here today, especially consecrated women. May you also may be known as "Praying Sisters".
Dear brothers and sisters, may these new saints help you to treasure their lessons of evangelical living. Follow in their footsteps and imitate them, in a particular way, through love of Jesus in the Eucharist and love of the Church. Thus you will advance along the path to holiness. With this hope and the assurance of my prayers, I impart to each of you and to all your loved ones my Apostolic Blessing. Thank you!
