Alle ore 11.30 di questa mattina, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza una Delegazione dell’Alleanza Evangelica Mondiale.
Pubblichiamo di seguito il discorso che il Papa ha rivolto ai presenti nel corso dell’incontro:
Discorso del Santo Padre
Cari fratelli e sorelle in Cristo,
«Grazia a voi e pace da Dio Padre nostro e dal Signore Gesù Cristo, che ha dato sé stesso per i nostri peccati al fine di strapparci da questo mondo malvagio, secondo la volontà di Dio e Padre nostro» (Gal 1,3-4). L’apostolo Paolo esprime con queste parole la nostra fede comune, la nostra speranza comune. Vorrei che questo mio saluto, che proclama che Gesù Cristo è Signore e Salvatore, raggiungesse anche i membri delle vostre comunità di origine.
Nell’offrire tutta la nostra volontà, con rinnovato amore, al servizio del Vangelo, aiutiamo la Chiesa a diventare sempre più, in Cristo e con Cristo, la vite feconda del Signore «finché arriviamo tutti all’unità della fede e della conoscenza del Figlio di Dio, fino all’uomo perfetto, fino a raggiungere la misura della pienezza di Cristo» (Ef 4,13). Questa realtà ha il suo fondamento nel Battesimo, attraverso il quale partecipiamo ai frutti della morte e risurrezione di Cristo. Il Battesimo è un inestimabile dono divino che abbiamo in comune (cfr Gal 3,27). Grazie ad esso non viviamo più soltanto nella dimensione terrena, ma nella potenza dello Spirito.
Il Sacramento del Battesimo ci ricorda una verità fondamentale e molto consolante: che il Signore sempre ci precede con il suo amore e la sua grazia. Precede le nostre comunità; precede, anticipa e prepara i cuori di coloro che annunciano il Vangelo e di coloro che accolgono il Vangelo della salvezza. «Leggendo le Scritture risulta peraltro chiaro che la proposta del Vangelo non consiste solo in una relazione personale con Dio. E neppure la nostra risposta di amore dovrebbe intendersi come una mera somma di piccoli gesti personali nei confronti di qualche individuo bisognoso … una serie di azioni tendenti solo a tranquillizzare la propria coscienza. La proposta è il Regno di Dio (cfr Lc 4,43); si tratta di amare Dio che regna nel mondo» (Esort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 180). Il Regno di Dio sempre ci precede. Come pure ci precede il mistero dell’unità della Chiesa.
Sin dall’inizio ci sono state divisioni tra i cristiani, e ancora oggi purtroppo permangono rivalità e conflitti tra le nostre comunità. Tale situazione indebolisce la nostra capacità di adempiere il comandamento del Signore di predicare il Vangelo a tutte le nazioni (cfr Mt 28,19-20). La realtà delle nostre divisioni deturpa la bellezza dell’unica tunica di Cristo ma non distrugge completamente la profonda unità generata dalla grazia in tutti i battezzati (cfr Conc. Ecum. Vat. II, Decr. Unitatis redintegratio, 13). L’efficacia dell’annuncio cristiano sarebbe certo maggiore se i cristiani superassero le loro divisioni e potessero celebrare insieme i Sacramenti e insieme diffondere la Parola di Dio e testimoniare la carità.
Sono lieto di apprendere che, in diversi Paesi del mondo, cattolici ed evangelici hanno stabilito relazioni di fratellanza e collaborazione. Inoltre, gli sforzi congiunti tra il Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani e la Commissione teologica della World Evangelical Alliance hanno aperto nuove prospettive, chiarendo malintesi e mostrando vie per superare pregiudizi. Auspico che tali consultazioni possano ulteriormente ispirare la nostra testimonianza comune e i nostri sforzi evangelizzatori: «Se realmente crediamo nella libera e generosa azione dello Spirito, quante cose possiamo imparare gli uni dagli altri! Non si tratta solamente di ricevere informazioni sugli altri per conoscerli meglio, ma di raccogliere quello che lo Spirito ha seminato in loro come un dono anche per noi» (Esort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 246). Spero inoltre che il documento "Testimonianza cristiana in un mondo multi-religioso. Raccomandazioni per il comportamento", possa diventare motivo di ispirazione per l’annuncio del Vangelo in contesti multi-religiosi.
Cari fratelli e sorelle, sono fiducioso che lo Spirito Santo, che infonde nella Chiesa, con il suo soffio possente, il coraggio di perseverare e anche di cercare nuovi metodi di evangelizzazione, possa inaugurare una nuova tappa nelle relazioni tra cattolici ed evangelici. Una tappa che permetta di realizzare in maniera più piena la volontà del Signore di portare il Vangelo fino agli estremi confini della terra (cfr At 1,8). Vi assicuro per questo la mia preghiera, e chiedo anche a voi di pregare per me e per il mio ministero. Grazie.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
"Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father" (Gal 1:3-4). With these words the Apostle Paul expresses our common faith and our common hope. I ask you to bring this greeting, and its proclamation that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, to the members of your respective communities.
Whenever we put ourselves entirely and lovingly at the service of the Gospel, we become ever more fruitful branches of that vine which is Christ, "until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Eph 4:13). This truth is grounded in our Baptism, by which we share in the fruits of Christ’s death and resurrection. Baptism is God’s priceless gift which we have in common (cf. Gal 3:27). Thanks to this gift, we no longer live a purely earthly existence; we now live in the power of the Spirit.
The sacrament of Baptism reminds us of a fundamental and very comforting truth. The Lord always anticipates us with his love and his grace. He goes before our communities; he goes before all those who proclaim the Gospel of salvation and those who accept it, preparing every heart to welcome him. "Reading the Scriptures makes it clear that the Gospel is not merely about our personal relationship with God. Nor should our loving response to God be seen simply as an accumulation of small personal gestures to individuals in need… a series of acts aimed solely at easing our conscience. The Gospel is about the kingdom of God (cf. Lk 4:43); it is about loving God who reigns in our world" (Evangelii Gaudium, 180). The Kingdom of God always goes before us, just as the mystery of the Church’s unity always goes before us.
From the beginning, there have been divisions among Christians and sadly, even today, conflicts and rivalries exist between our communities. This weakens our ability to fulfill the Lord’s commandment to preach the Gospel to all peoples (cf. Mt 28:19-20). Our divisions mar the beauty of the seamless robe of Christ, yet they do not completely destroy the profound unity brought about by grace in all the baptized (cf. Unitatis Redintegratio, 13). The effectiveness of the Christian message would no doubt be greater were Christians to overcome their divisions, and together celebrate the sacraments, spread the word of God, and bear witness to charity.
It pleases me to know that in various countries Catholics and Evangelicals enjoy good relations and work together as brothers and sisters. The joint efforts of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Theological Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance have also opened up new horizons by clarifying misunderstandings and by showing the way to overcoming prejudices. It is my hope that these talks may further inspire our common witness and our efforts to evangelize: "If we really believe in the abundantly free working of the Holy Spirit, we can learn so much from one another! It is not just about being better informed about others, but rather about reaping what the Spirit has sown in them, which is also meant to be a gift for us" (Evangelii Gaudium, 246). I am confident that the document, Christian Witness in a Multi-Religious World: Recommendations for Conduct can prove helpful for the preaching of the Gospel in multi-religious contexts.
Dear brothers and sisters, I trust that the Holy Spirit, who inspires the Church to persevere in seeking new methods of evangelization, will usher in a new era of relations between Catholics and Evangelicals, so that the Lord’s will that the Gospel be brought to the ends of the earth (cf. Acts 1:8) may be more fully realized. With this prayer, I ask you to pray for me and for my ministry. Thank you.
