La Commissione Cardinalizia dell'Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR) ha assegnato a Mauricio Larraín (Cile) e Carlo Salvatori (Italia) la carica di membri del Consiglio di Sovrintendenza dello IOR.

Il Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló, Presidente della Commissione Cardinalizia di Vigilanza dello IOR, ha affermato: "Lo IOR è lieto di lavorare con questi due membri aggiuntivi, che apporteranno all’Istituto una notevole esperienza in campo finanziario e un’ottica globale proprio nel momento in cui lo IOR si sta rafforzando e raggiungendo gli obiettivi segnalati dal Santo Padre."

Con queste designazioni, sono ora ricoperte tutte le cariche del Consiglio di Sovrintendenza dell'Istituto. Oltre a Mauricio Larraín e Carlo Salvatori, esso conta Jean-Baptiste de Franssu (Francia) quale Presidente dell'organo, Clemens Boersig (Germania), la Prof.ssa Mary Ann Glendon (USA) e Sir Michael Hintze (UK), insediatisi il 9 luglio 2014. A questi sei membri laici si aggiunge, in veste di Segretario non votante, il Monsignor Alfred Xuereb, Segretario Generale della Segreteria per l'Economia.

Come sancito dallo Statuto dell'Istituto, modificato nel 1990, il Consiglio di Sovrintendenza dello IOR definisce la strategia e assicura la supervisione delle operazioni. I suoi membri ricoprono la loro carica in conformità al nuovo contesto giuridico e per cinque anni.

La nomina di un Segretario non votante e la designazione di un sesto membro rispettivamente al Consiglio di Sovrintendenza dello IOR e alla Commissione Cardinalizia dell'Istituto saranno formalizzate una volta conclusasi la revisione dello Statuto attualmente in corso.

Cenni biografici sui nuovi membri del Consiglio di Sovrintendenza dello IOR

Mauricio Larraín è Direttore Esterno del Gruppo Banco Santander Cile e Direttore Generale della ESE Business School dell'Università Los Andes del Cile. Dal 1992 al 2014 ha ricoperto la carica di Presidente e Direttore Generale del Gruppo Banco Santander del Cile e, dal 2000 al 2014, di Presidente della Santander Chile Holding S.A. e della Universia Chile S.A. Durante quel periodo il Gruppo Banco Santander del Cile è stato scelto per sei anni come miglior banca dell’America Latina dalla rivista América Economía. Prima di giungere alla Santander, Mauricio Larraín è stato Senior Finance Specialist presso la Banca Mondiale di Washington D.C., manager del Debito Estero della Banca Centrale del Cile e Vice Sovrintendente Bancario della Sovrintendenza Bancaria del Cile. Per i suoi successi manageriali è stato insignito di diversi riconoscimenti. Nel 2008 ha ricevuto l'Estrategia Newspaper Award per il miglior dirigente. Nel 2007 è stato scelto come uno dei 3 migliori dirigenti e manager del Cile da Adimark GfK/La Segunda Newspaper; nel 2004 ha invece figurato nella rosa dei 10 migliori dirigenti del Cile degli ultimi 20 anni, nominati dal giornale La Tercera della Pontificia Università Cattolica del Cile. Mauricio Larraín ha conseguito lauree in legge e in economia (candidato) presso la Pontificia Università Cattolica del Cile e una in legge presso l'Università di Harvard. Nato il 31 luglio 1950, Larraín è sposato e ha sei figli.

Carlo Salvatori è Presidente della banca d'investimento Lazard Italia dal giugno 2010 e della compagnia assicurativa Allianz SpA dal maggio 2012. È altresì membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, dell’Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù, della Chiesi Farmaceutici, del Gruppo Riso Gallo nonché Presidente dell’Unione Cristiana Imprenditori Dirigenti Sezione di Milano. Carlo Salvatori ha ricoperto diverse cariche di alta dirigenza nel settore bancario italiano, tra cui quella di Amministratore Delegato di Unipol Gruppo Finanziario, di Presidente di UniCredit e di Vice Presidente di Mediobanca. Egli è stato altresì Amministratore Delegato e CEO di Banca Intesa, Cariplo, Banco Ambrosiano Veneto e Direttore Centrale di BNL. Lo stesso ha inoltre ricoperto il ruolo di Presidente del Supervisory Board della Bank-Austria di Vienna e di membro del Supervisory Board della HypoVereinsbank di Monaco (Germania). Carlo Salvatore ha conseguito una laurea in Economia e Commercio presso l’Università degli Studi di Bologna, una in Scienze Bancarie presso l’Università di Siena e una laurea honoris causa in Scienze Politiche presso l’Università degli Studi di Macerata. Nato a Sora (Frosinone, Italia) il 7 luglio 1941, Carlo Salvatori è sposato e ha tre figli.

The Cardinals’ Commission of the Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR) has appointed Mr. Mauricio Larraín (Chile) and Mr. Carlo Salvatori (Italy) as members to the IOR Board of Superintendence.

On the occasion of the nomination Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló, President of the IOR’s Supervisory Commission of Cardinals, said: "The IOR is looking forward to working with these two new board members who will add significant financial experience and global perspective at a time when the role of IOR is being reinforced and confirmed to meet the objectives of the Holy Father."

With these appointments, the IOR Board of Superintendence is now complete. Besides Mauricio Larraín and Carlo Salvatori, it is composed of Mr. Jean-Baptiste de Franssu (France), President of the Board, Mr. Clemens Boersig (Germany), Prof. Mary Ann Glendon (USA) and Sir Michael Hintze (UK), who assumed office on 9 July 2014. In addition to these six lay members of the Board, Monsignor Alfred Xuereb, Secretary-General of the Secretariat for the Economy, serves as its non-voting Secretary.

As set out in the Institute’s revised Statute from 1990, the IOR Board of Superintendence defines strategy and ensures oversight of operations. The members of the Board of Superintendence are nominated in accordance with the new legal framework and for a period of five years.

The nomination of a non-voting Secretary and a sixth member to the IOR Board of Superintendence as well as the nomination of a sixth member to the IOR Cardinals’ Commission will be formalized upon completion of the current review of the Institute’s Statute.

Background on the new members of the IOR Board of Superintendence

Mauricio Larraín is External Director of Santander Bank Group Chile and General Director of the ESE Business School from the Los Andes University of Chile. He has served as the Santander Bank Group Chile’s Chairman and General Director from 1992 until 2014 and has been President of Santander Chile Holding S.A. and Universia Chile S.A. from 2000 until 2014. During this period, Santander Bank Group Chile was chosen as the Best Bank in Latin America in six different years by the América Economía Magazine. Before joining Santander, Mauricio Larraín was Senior Finance Specialist at the World Bank in Washington D.C., Manager of External Debt at the Central Bank of Chile and Deputy Superintendent of Banks of the Superintendence of Banks of Chile. He was awarded several prizes for his executive achievements. In 2008, he received the Estrategia Newspaper Award for Best Executive. In 2007, he was selected among the 3 Best Executives and Managers of Chile by Adimark GfK/La Segunda Newspaper, and in 2004, he was chosen as one of the 10 Best Executives of Chile in 20 years by the newspaper La Tercera of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Mauricio Larraín holds degrees in Law and Economics (candidate) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and a degree in Law from Harvard University. Born on 31 July 1950, he is married and has six children.

Carlo Salvatori serves as President of the investment bank Lazard Italy since June 2010 and of the insurance company Allianz SpA since May 2012. Furthermore, he is member of the Board of Directors of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital, of Chiesi Pharmaceuticals and of the Riso Gallo Group and he also is President of the Christian Union of Business Executives’ Milanese section. Carlo Salvatori assumed various high-rank executive positions in the Italian banking industry: Among others, he served as Managing Director of Unipol Gruppo Finanziario, as President of UniCredit and as Vice President of Mediobanca.
