Oggi, venerdì 21 marzo 2014, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza, nel Palazzo Apostolico Vaticano, il Presidente della Repubblica di Malta, Sua Eccellenza il Sig. George Abela. Successivamente il Presidente Abela ha incontrato Sua Eminenza il Cardinale Pietro Parolin, Segretario di Stato, il quale era accompagnato dall’Arcivescovo Dominique Mamberti, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati.
Nel corso dei colloqui, che si sono svolti in un clima cordiale, sono state ricordate le profonde tracce del cristianesimo nella storia, nella cultura e nella vita del Popolo maltese, come pure le buone relazioni tra la Santa Sede e Malta, evocando le visite pastorali compiute dal Beato Giovanni Paolo II e Benedetto XVI. In particolare, si è fatto riferimento all’apporto della Chiesa cattolica in campo educativo e assistenziale, come pure agli Accordi conclusi tra la Santa Sede e Malta in vista di una proficua cooperazione a servizio del bene comune.
Infine, ci si è soffermati sul contributo di Malta in seno all’Unione Europea, come pure su alcune situazioni della regione del Mediterraneo, nonché sul fenomeno delle migrazioni verso l’Europa che vede impegnati la Chiesa e il Governo.

Today, Friday 21 March 2014, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Francis received in Audience the President of the Republic of Malta, His Excellency Mr. George Abela, who subsequently met with His Eminence Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.
During the cordial discussions, mention was made of the deep imprints of Christianity in the history, culture and life of the Maltese population, as well as the good relations between the Holy See and Malta, recalling the pastoral visits made by Blessed John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Particular reference was made to the contribution of the Catholic Church in the fields of education and welfare, and the Agreements concluded between the Holy See and Malta with a view to fruitful collaboration in the service of the common good.
Finally, the Parties focused on Malta’s contribution within the European Union, as well as various situations in the Mediterranean region, and the phenomenon of migration towards Europe which involves the efforts of the Church and the Government.
