Alle ore 12.30 di oggi, nella Basilica Vaticana, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza gruppi di fedeli provenienti dallo Sri Lanka, venuti in pellegrinaggio a Roma in occasione delle celebrazioni del 75^.mo anniversario della consacrazione alla Madonna della Chiesa in Sri Lanka.

Riportiamo di seguito il discorso che il Papa ha rivolto loro:

I greet you, dear brothers and sisters of the Sri Lankan community in Italy! I extend fraternal greetings to Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and the other Bishops of your homeland. I thank Cardinal Ranjith for the invitation to visit Sri Lanka. I accept it and believe the Lord will give us this grace. You have come on pilgrimage to Rome to render homage to Our Lady, at the end of the celebrations to mark the 75^th anniversary of the consecration to her of the Church in Sri Lanka.

Seventy-five years ago, the dark clouds of what would be the second world conflict were thickening in the skies and the faithful, guided by a sure intuition of faith, entrusted themselves to Our Lady, who always defends her children from dangers. In 1940, in the dramatic circumstances of the war, the Archbishop of Colombo, Mgr Jean-Marie Masson, of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, made a vow to build a shrine in honour of Our Lady if the island were preserved from foreign invasion. So it came about, and after the end of the war the beautiful Shrine of Our Lady of Lanka at Tewatte was built, and was consecrated forty years ago.

Dear brothers and sisters, Our Lady is always close to us, she looks upon each one of us with maternal love and accompanies us always on our journey. Do not hesitate to turn to her for every need, especially when the burden of life with all its problems makes itself felt.

Your homeland is called the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, on account of its natural beauty and its shape. They say that the pearl is formed from the tears of the oyster. Unfortunately, many tears have been shed in recent years, on account of the internal conflict which caused so many victims and so much damage. It is not easy, I know, to heal the wounds and cooperate with yesterday’s enemy to build tomorrow together, but it is the only path that gives hope for the future, hope for development and hope for peace. For this reason, I assure you that you have a particular place in my prayer. I ask the Lord to grant you the gift of peace and reconciliation, and to help you in your effort to ensure a better future for all who live in Sri Lanka.

I entrust you to the maternal intercession of Mary, Our Lady of Lanka. I ask you to pray for me and from my heart I bless you.

Vi saluto, cari fratelli e sorelle della comunità srilankese in Italia! Saluto fraternamente il Cardinale Malcolm Ranjith e altri Vescovi della vostra Patria. E ringrazio il cardinale Ranjith per l’invito a visitare lo Sri Lanka. Io accolgo questo invito e credo che il Signore ci darà la grazia. Siete venuti in pellegrinaggio a Roma per rendere omaggio alla Madonna, al termine delle celebrazioni per il 75° anniversario della consacrazione a Lei della Chiesa in Sri Lanka.

Settantacinque anni fa, le nuvole cupe di quello che sarebbe stato il secondo conflitto mondiale si addensavano nei cieli, e i fedeli, guidati da una sicura intuizione di fede, si affidarono alla Madonna, che sempre difende i suoi figli dai pericoli. Nel 1940, nelle drammatiche circostanze della guerra, l’Arcivescovo di Colombo, Mons. Jean-Marie Masson, degli Oblati di Maria Immacolata, fece il voto di far costruire un santuario in onore della Madonna se l’isola fosse stata preservata dall’invasione straniera. Così avvenne, e dopo la fine della guerra fu edificato il bel Santuario di Nostra Signora di Lanka, a Tewatte, consacrato quaranta anni or sono.

Cari fratelli e sorelle, la Madonna è sempre vicina a noi, guarda ognuno di noi con amore materno e ci accompagna sempre nel nostro cammino. Non esitate a fare ricorso a Lei per ogni necessità, soprattutto quando si fa sentire il peso della vita con tutti i suoi problemi.

La vostra Patria è chiamata la Perla dell’Oceano Indiano, per la sua bellezza naturale e la sua conformazione. Si dice che la perla è formata dalle lacrime dell’ostrica. Purtroppo, molte lacrime sono state versate negli ultimi anni, a motivo del conflitto interno che ha provocato tante vittime e causato tanti danni. Non è facile, lo so, guarire le ferite e collaborare con l’avversario di ieri per costruire insieme il domani, ma è l’unica strada che ci dà speranza di futuro, speranza di sviluppo e speranza di pace. Per questo, vi assicuro che avete un posto particolare nella mia preghiera. Supplico il Signore di farvi dono della pace e della riconciliazione, e di aiutarvi nel tentativo di assicurare un futuro migliore per tutti gli abitanti dello Sri Lanka.

Vi affido alla materna intercessione di Maria, Nostra Signora di Lanka. Vi chiedo di pregare per me e di cuore vi benedico.
