Nella mattinata di oggi, giovedì 29 agosto 2013, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto le loro Maestà il Re di Giordania, Abdullah II, e la Regina Rania. Successivamente, il Sovrano hascemita ha incontrato Sua Eminenza il Signor Cardinale Tarcisio Bertone, Segretario di Stato, che era accompagnato da Sua Eccellenza Mons. Dominique Mamberti, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati.
Nel corso dei cordiali colloqui sono stati passati in rassegna alcuni temi di comune interesse, soprattutto la promozione della pace e della stabilità nel Medio Oriente, con particolare riferimento alla ripresa dei negoziati tra Israeliani e Palestinesi e alla questione di Gerusalemme. Speciale attenzione è stata riservata alla tragica situazione in cui versa la Siria; al riguardo, è stato riaffermato che la via del dialogo e della negoziazione fra tutti i componenti della società siriana, con il sostegno della comunità internazionale, è l’unica opzione per porre fine al conflitto e alle violenze che ogni giorno causano la perdita di tante vite umane, soprattutto fra la popolazione inerme.
Si è, inoltre, espresso apprezzamento per l’impegno di Re Abdullah nel campo del dialogo interreligioso e per l’iniziativa di convocare ad Amman, all’inizio del mese di settembre, una Conferenza sulle sfide che i Cristiani nel Medio Oriente devono affrontare, particolarmente durante questo periodo di cambiamenti socio-politici. Si è, infine, rilevato il positivo contributo che le comunità cristiane apportano alle società della Regione, di cui sono una parte integrante.

On the morning of Thursday August 29th 2013 Pope Francis received their Majesties the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, and Queen Rania. Later, the Hashemite sovereign met with His Eminence Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.
Several themes of common interest were addressed during the course of the cordial encounter, most importantly the promotion of peace and stability in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the restarting of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, and on the question of Jerusalem. Special attention was reserved for the tragic situation in which Syria finds itself. In this regard, it was reaffirmed that the path of dialogue and negotiation between all components of Syrian society, with the support of the international community, is the only option to put an end to the conflict and to the violence that every day causes the loss of so many human lives, especially amongst the helpless civilian population.
Appreciation was also expressed for King Abdullah’s commitment in the field of interreligious dialogue and for the initiative of convening a conference in Amman, at the beginning of the month of September, on the challenges that Christians in the Middle East will have to face, in particular during this period of socio-political transformations. Finally, recognition was expressed for the positive contribution that Christian communities bring to the local society, of which they are an integral part.
