Questa mattina il Santo Padre ha ricevuto in Udienza S.E. il Sig. NassirAbdulaziz Al-Nasser, Presidente della sessantaseiesima sessione dell’Assemblea Generale dell’ONU. In seguito, S.E. il Sig. Al-Nasser ha incontrato il Segretario di Stato, Sua Eminenza il Card. Tarcisio Bertone, che era accompagnato da S.E. Mons. Dominique Mamberti, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati.

Il cordiale colloquio ha avuto come tema centrale il ruolo dell’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite, e in particolare dell’Assemblea Generale, nella risoluzione dei conflitti, con particolare attenzione a quelli in atto in diverse regioni del mondo, soprattutto in Africa e in Medio Oriente, e alle gravi situazioni di emergenza umanitaria che ne conseguono.

In seguito ci si è soffermati sull’importanza del contributo della Chiesa Cattolica alla pace ed allo sviluppo, nonché sul rilievo della cooperazione tra le religioni e le culture.

This morning the Holy Father received in audience Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser, president of the sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The president subsequently went on to meet with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B. who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.

The central theme of the cordial discussions was the role of the United Nations Organisation, and especially of the General Assembly, in conflict resolution. Particular consideration was given to the conflicts currently affecting various regions of the world, especially Africa and the Middle East, and to the serious humanitarian emergencies they provoke.

Attention then turned to the Catholic Church's contribution to peace and development, and to the importance of cooperation between religions and cultures.
