Pubblichiamo di seguito la Lettera che il Prefetto della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali, l’Em.mo Card. Leonardo Sandri, ha inviato ai Pastori della Chiesa Universale affinché sostengano la Terra Santa:

Eccellenza Reverendissima,
L'attesa quaresimale della Pasqua del Signore è una occasione propizia per sensibilizzare l’intera Chiesa Cattolica a favore della Terra Santa, promuovendo particolari iniziative di preghiera e di carità fraterna.
Rivolgo, perciò, un cordiale invito a tutte le comunità ecclesiali affinché si pongano al fianco dei cristiani di Gerusalemme, Israele e Palestina, come dei Paesi circostanti, Giordania, Siria, Libano, Cipro, Egitto, i quali compongono insieme quella Terra benedetta. Il Figlio di Dio fatto uomo, dopo averla attraversata per annunciare il Regno ed aver confermato la parola con prodigi e segni (cf At 2,22), è salito alla Santa Città per immolare Sé stesso: ha patito, è morto sulla Croce, è risorto e ci ha donato lo Spirito. Da allora ogni cristiano ritrova se stesso in quella Città e in quella Terra. Ciò è possibile perché ancora oggi i pastori posti dal Signore Gesù vi raccolgono i fratelli e le sorelle nella fede a celebrare l’amore di Colui che "fa nuove tutte le cose" (Ap 21,5).
La Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali ricorda ai vescovi del mondo intero la costante richiesta di Papa Benedetto XVI affinché sia generosamente sostenuta la missione della Chiesa nei Luoghi Santi. E’ una missione specificamente pastorale, ma nel contempo offre a tutti indistintamente un encomiabile servizio sociale. Così cresce quella fraternità che abbatte le divisioni e le discriminazioni per inaugurare sempre di nuovo il dialogo ecumenico e la collaborazione interreligiosa. Ciò costituisce un’ammirevole opera di pace e di riconciliazione, tanto più necessaria oggi, preoccupati come siamo col Santo Padre "per le popolazioni dei Paesi in cui si susseguono tensioni e violenze, in particolare la Siria e la Terra Santa" (Discorso agli Ambasciatori presso la Santa Sede, 9 gen. 2012). Ed anche in seguito Sua Santità ha pregato accoratamente per la Siria , rinnovando "il pressante appello a porre fine alla violenza…per il bene comune dell’intera società e della Regione" (Angelus, domenica 12 feb. 2012).
Il giorno che i Sommi Pontefici hanno scelto per la Collecta pro Terra Sancta è il venerdì che precede la Pasqua, anche se ogni comunità potrà scegliere altra opportuna circostanza per proporre ai fedeli la solidale iniziativa. Il Venerdì Santo quest'anno sembra interpretare ancor più le necessità dei pastori e dei fedeli, le quali sono racchiuse nelle sofferenze di tutto il Medio Oriente. Per i discepoli di Cristo le ostilità sono il pane quotidiano che alimenta la fede e talora fanno risuonare l'eco del martirio in tutta la sua attualità. L'emigrazione cristiana è acuita dalla mancanza di pace, che tenta di impoverire la speranza, mutandosi nella paura di essere soli davanti ad un futuro che sembra non esistere se non come abbandono della propria patria.
Come per l’evangelico chicco di frumento (cf Gv 12,24), la fatica dei cristiani di Terra Santa prepara senz’altro un domani di bene, ma chiede oggi di sostenere scuole, assistenza sanitaria, necessità abitative, luoghi di aggregazione e tutto quanto ha saputo suscitare la generosità della Chiesa. Quanta fede scopriamo nei giovani, desiderosi di testimoniare le beatitudini, amando i loro Paesi nell’impegno per la giustizia e per la pace con i mezzi della non violenza evangelica. Quanta orgogliosa fede, quanta fermezza, ci viene trasmessa da chi proferisce parole di riconciliazione e di perdono, sapendo di dover rispondere in tal modo alla violenza e talora al sopruso.
Abbiamo il dovere di restituire il patrimonio spirituale ricevuto dalla loro millenaria fedeltà alle verità della fede cristiana. Lo possiamo e lo dobbiamo fare con la nostra preghiera, con la concretezza del nostro aiuto, con i pellegrinaggi. L’Anno della Fede, nel cinquantesimo del Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II, fornirà motivazioni singolari per muovere i nostri passi verso quella Terra, peregrinando ancor prima col cuore tra i misteri di Cristo in compagnia della Santa Madre del Signore. Il prossimo Venerdì Santo, attorno alla Croce di Cristo, ci sentiremo insieme a questi nostri fratelli e alle sorelle: la solitudine che talora si affaccia fortemente nella loro esistenza sia vinta dalla nostra fraternità. Ed essi possano proclamare nella serenità del corpo e dello spirito che "Gesù è il Signore" (At 11,20), affinché "la porta della fede" (At 14,27) continui a spalancarsi proprio da quella Terra ad assicurare il perdono e la bontà di Dio per l’intera famiglia umana.
La nostra Congregazione si fa portavoce della gratitudine che Papa Benedetto XVI esprime ai pastori, ai sacerdoti, ai religiosi e alle religiose, ai giovani e a quanti si prodigano per la Terra di Gesù. Ed è sicura di interpretare il grazie della Diocesi patriarcale di Gerusalemme, della Custodia Francescana e delle locali Chiese Orientali Cattoliche.

Excellence Révérendissime,
L'attente de la Pâque du Seigneur pendant ce temps de Carême est une occasion pour attirer l'attention de toute l'Eglise Catholique sur la Terre-Sainte, en mettant en œuvre des initiatives de prière et de charité.
J'adresse pour cela une invitation cordiale à toutes les communautés ecclésiales pour qu'elles soutiennent les chrétiens de Jérusalem, d'Israël et de la Palestine ainsi que des pays voisins, Jordanie, Syrie, Liban, Chypre, Egypte qui forment ensemble cette Terre bénie. Le Fils de Dieu fait homme, après l'avoir parcourue pour annoncer le Royaume de Dieu et avoir confirmé la Parole par des prodiges et des signes (cf. Ac. 2,22), est monté vers la Cité Sainte pour S'immoler: Il a souffert, est mort sur la Croix, est ressuscité et nous a communiqué l'Esprit-Saint. Depuis lors, tout chrétien se retrouve dans cette Cité et dans cette Terre. C'est possible parce qu'encore aujourd'hui, des pasteurs placés là par le Seigneur y rassemblent les fidèles dans la foi pour célébrer l'amour de Celui qui "fait toute chose nouvelle" (Ap 21, 5).
La Congrégation pour les Eglises Orientales rappelle aux évêques du monde entier, la requête pressante du Pape Benoît XVI à soutenir généreusement la mission de l'Eglise dans les Lieux-Saints. C'est une mission éminemment pastorale et dans le même temps, elle offre à tous indistinctement un service social incomparable. Ainsi, grandit la fraternité, qui abat les divisions et les discriminations, toujours renouvelée dans le dialogue œcuménique et la collaboration interreligieuse. C'est une œuvre admirable de paix et de réconciliation, d'autant plus nécessaire aujourd'hui, préoccupés comme nous le sommes avec le Saint Père "pour les populations des pays dans lesquels se poursuivent tensions et violences, en particulier la Syrie, ...et en Terre-Sainte..." (Discours aux Ambassadeurs près le Saint-Siège, 9-01-2012). Ensuite, le Saint Père a prié pour la Syrie renouvelant "un appel pressant à mettre fin à la violence...pour le bien commun de toute la société et de la région" (Angélus, 12-02-2012).
Le jour choisi par les Souverains Pontifes pour la Quête en faveur de la Terre-Sainte est le vendredi qui précède la Pâque, même si chaque communauté peut choisir un autre moment pour la proposer aux fidèles. Le Vendredi-Saint de cette année semble interpréter davantage encore les nécessités des pasteurs et des fidèles qui sont contenues dans toutes les souffrances du Moyen-Orient. Pour les disciples du Christ, les hostilités sont le pain quotidien qui nourrit la foi et rendent actuel le martyr. L'émigration des chrétiens est alimentée par l'absence de paix qui appauvrit l'espérance et se meut en peur d'être seuls devant un futur qui semble bouché là, mais que l'abandon de la terre natale serait susceptible de rouvrir.
Comme le grain de froment (cf. Jn 12, 24), les souffrances des chrétiens de Terre-Sainte préparent un futur meilleur, mais ils ont besoin maintenant de soutien pour les écoles, l'assistance sanitaire, pour des habitations, des lieux de rencontres et pour tout ce que la générosité de l'Eglise a pu susciter. Quelle foi découvrons-nous chez les jeunes désireux de témoigner des Béatitudes, engagés en faveur de la justice et de la paix par amour de leur pays! Quel exemple de foi et de fermeté nous est transmis par ceux qui prônent la réconciliation et le pardon quand ils subissent abus et violence!
Nous avons le devoir de les aider à conserver ce patrimoine spirituel que nous avons reçu de leur fidélité millénaire à la Vérité de la foi chrétienne. Nous le pouvons et nous devons nous y engager par la prière, par notre aide concrète, par les pèlerinages. L'Année de la Foi, pour le cinquantenaire du Concile Œcuménique Vatican II, nous fournira des occasions particulières pour aller dans cette Terre afin de suivre les pas du Christ en compagnie de Sa Sainte Mère. Le Vendredi-Saint prochain, près de la Croix, nous nous unirons à ces frères et sœurs pour que leur isolement si souvent ressenti soit vaincu par notre fraternité. Ils pourront alors sereinement proclamer que "Jésus est le Seigneur" (Ac 11, 20) afin que "la porte de la foi" (Ac 14, 27) continue à s'ouvrir justement à partir de cette Terre pour transmettre le pardon et la bonté de Dieu à la famille humaine entière.
Notre Congrégation se fait porte-voix de la gratitude que Sa Sainteté Benoît XVI exprime au évêques, aux prêtres, aux religieux, aux religieuses, aux jeunes et à tous ceux qui travaillent pour la Terre du Christ. Elle se fait aussi l'interprète de la reconnaissance du Diocèse patriarcal de Jérusalem, de la Custodie de Terre-Sainte et des Eglises Orientales locales.
Veuillez croire à l'expression de mes meilleurs vœux dans la joie du Seigneur, mort sur la Croix et ressuscité.

Your Excellency,
The annual Lenten journey towards the Pasch of the Lord offers a propitious occasion to sensitize the Catholic Church around the world with regard to the Holy Land by promoting relevant initiatives of prayer and fraternal charity.
Therefore, I am sending this cordial invitation to all ecclesial communities, asking them to place themselves at the side of the Christians of Jerusalem, Israel and Palestine, as well as the countries near to them – Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Egypt – which together make up that blessed Land. The Son of God made man, after having crossed this land announcing the Kingdom and confirming the word with mighty works, wonders and signs (cf. Acts 2:22), went up to the Holy City to immolate Himself: he suffered, died on the Cross, rose from the dead, and gave his Spirit to us. From that time, every Christian finds himself at home in that City and in that Land. This is possible thanks to the pastors in this place, who, by the will of the Lord Jesus, continue in our day also to gather our brothers and sisters in the faith to celebrate the love of Him who "makes all things new" (Ap. 21:5).
The Congregation for Oriental Churches hereby reminds the bishops of the entire world of the unceasing request of Pope Benedict XVI that the mission of the Church in the Holy Places be generously supported. Although specifically pastoral, this mission at the same time offers a praiseworthy social service to all without exception. In this way, fraternity, which can overcome division and discrimination, increases and gives renewed impetus to ecumenical dialogue and interreligious collaboration. This constitutes an admirable work of peace and reconciliation, which is all the more necessary today, as we share the Holy Father’s preoccupation "for the people of those countries where hostilities and acts of violence continue, particularly Syria and the Holy Land" (Address to Members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, January 9, 2012). Soon after, His Holiness again interceded fervently for Syria, renewing "the pressing appeal to put an end to the violence… for the common good of the whole of society and the Region" (Angelus, Sunday, February 12, 2012).
The day, which the Supreme Pontiffs have designated for the Collection for the Holy Land, is the Friday preceding Easter, even if each community is free to choose another opportune moment.
This year, Good Friday seems more fitting than ever as a sign of the needs of both pastors and faithful, which are bound up with the sufferings of the entire Middle East. For the disciples of Christ, hostility is often the daily bread which nourishes the faith and sometimes makes the echo of martyrdom. Christian emigration is exacerbated by the lack of peace, which tends to impoverish hope, changing it into the fear of facing alone a future that seems to exist only in the abandonment of one’s own country.
Nonetheless, as was the case for the Gospel’s grain of wheat (cf. Jn 12:24), so the trials of Christians in the Holy Land prepare without doubt a brighter tomorrow. The dawning of this new day, however, requires support now for schools, medical assistance, critical housing, meeting places, and everything else that the generosity of the Church has devised. What great faith we discover in young people, who, in witness to the Beatitudes and their love of country, have committed themselves to work for justice and peace through non-violent, evangelical means. What a justly proud and firm faith is communicated by those who offer words of reconciliation and forgiveness, knowing that this is the only true response to violence and even to the abuse of power.
We have the duty to restore the spiritual patrimony which we have received from these Christians’ two millennia of fidelity to the truth of the faith. We can and must do this by our prayer, by concrete assistance, and by pilgrimages. The Year of Faith, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, will provide particular motivation for us to direct our steps towards that Land, journeying first in our hearts through the mysteries of the life of Christ in company with the Holy Mother of the Lord. Next Good Friday, around the Cross of Christ, let us be conscious of being together with these brothers and sisters of ours. May the loneliness that is at times strongly felt in their situation be overcome by our fraternity! May they be able to proclaim in serenity of both body and spirit that "Jesus is Lord" (Acts 11:20)! Thus, "the door of faith" (cf. Acts 14:27) will continue to be thrown open wide from that very Land, so as to win the pardon and mercy of God for the entire human family.
Our Congregation is pleased to make itself a voice for Pope Benedict XVI, expressing his profound gratitude to bishops, priests, religious men and women, to young people and to all who have given of themselves for the benefit of the Land of Jesus. Likewise, we willingly transmit the abundant thankfulness of the Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem, of the Franciscan Custody, and of the local Oriental Catholic Churches.

Exzellenz hochwürdigster Herr Bischof,
Die Fastenzeit in Erwartung des Paschafestes des Herrn ist ein guter Anlass, um die gesamte katholische Kirche für das Heilige Land zu sensibilisieren und Initiativen mit dem Anliegen zu fördern, die dortigen Christen in Gebet und brüderlicher Liebe zu unterstützen.
Daher lade ich herzlich alle Ortskirchen ein, den Christen solidarisch zur Seite zu stehen, die in Jerusalem, Israel und Palästina leben, wie auch in den angrenzenden Ländern Jordanien, Syrien, Libanon, Zypern und Ägypten, die gemeinsam das geheiligte Land bilden. Der Mensch gewordene Sohn Gottes ist durch dieses Land gewandert, um das Reich Gottes zu verkünden und das Wort mit Zeichen und Wundern zu bestätigen (vgl. Apg 2,22). Er ist zur Heiligen Stadt hinaufgezogen, um sich selber als Opfer hinzugeben: Er hat gelitten, ist am Kreuz gestorben, ist auferstanden und hat uns seinen Geist geschenkt. Seitdem kann jeder Christ sich in jener Stadt und in jenem Land wiederfinden. Dies ist möglich, weil auch heute noch die vom Herrn Jesus eingesetzten Hirten die Brüder und Schwestern dort im Glauben sammeln, um die Liebe dessen zu feiern, der "alles neu macht" (vgl. Offb 21,5).
Die Kongregation für die orientalischen Kirchen möchte den Bischöfen der ganzen Welt die Bitte Papst Benedikts XVI. in Erinnerung rufen, die Mission der Kirche an den Heiligen Stätten großzügig zu unterstützen. Sie ist eine spezifisch pastorale Mission. Zugleich ist das dortige kirchliche Engagement auch ein wertvolles soziales Angebot, das unterschiedslos allen offen steht. So kann jene Brüderlichkeit wachsen, durch die Trennungen und Diskriminierungen überwunden werden und durch die die Weiterführung des ökumenischen Dialogs und der interreligiösen Zusammenarbeit ermöglicht wird. Dies alles fördert in bewundernswerter Weise Frieden und Versöhnung. Beides ist dringend nötig, denn wir teilen mit dem Heiligen Vater die Sorge "um die Bevölkerungen jener Länder, in denen die Spannungen und die Gewalt andauern, insbesondere in Syrien und im Heiligen Land" (Ansprache beim Neujahrsempfang für die Mitglieder des beim Heiligen Stuhl akkreditierten Diplomatischen Korps, 9. Januar 2012). Und auch danach hat Seine Heiligkeit inständig für Syrien gebetet und erneut dringend appelliert, "der Gewalt ein Ende zu setzen … zum Wohl der gesamten Gesellschaft und der Region." (Angelus, Sonntag 12. Februar 2012).
Die Päpste haben für die Collecta Pro Terra Sancta den Freitag der Heiligen Woche gewählt, auch wenn jede Ortskirche einen anderen geeigneten Zeitpunkt wählen kann, um die Gläubigen zu diesem solidarischen Akt einzuladen. In diesem Jahr scheint der Karfreitag in besonderer Weise die Anliegen der Gläubigen und ihrer Hirten auszudrücken, die sich im Nahen Osten inmitten einer schwierigen Situation befinden. Für die Jünger Christi sind die Anfeindungen das tägliche Brot, das den Glauben nährt. Zuweilen werden diese Widrigkeiten sogar zu einem Widerhall des Martyriums in seiner ganzen Aktualität. Die Friedlosigkeit in diesen Ländern verschärft die Emigrationsbewegung der Christen. Sie droht Hoffnung zu zerstören und die Sorge zu nähren, einst alleine dazustehen und für sich keine Zukunft mehr zu sehen, außer im Verlassen des eigenen Vaterlandes.
Wie beim Samenkorn im Evangelium (vgl. Joh 12,24) bereiten die Mühen der Christen im Heiligen Land eine bessere Zukunft vor. Gleichwohl bedürfen in der heutigen Zeit die Schulen, Krankenhäuser, Gemeinderäume und Wohnungsbauinitiativen und all die anderen Werke der Kirche unserer Unterstützung. Welch großen Glauben, den die Jugend offenbart: Sie wollen die Seligpreisungen bezeugen und ihre Heimatliebe zeigen im Einsatz für Gerechtigkeit und Frieden mit den Mitteln evangelischer Gewaltlosigkeit. Welch stolzer Glaube, wie viel Entschlossenheit zeigt sich in dem, der auf Gewalt und Misshandlung mit Worten der Versöhnung und Vergebung antwortet.
Wir sind verpflichtet, uns für das geistliche Erbe zu revanchieren, das die Schwestern und Brüder im Heiligen Land uns durch ihre zweitausendjährige Treue zur Wahrheit des christlichen Glaubens übermittelt haben. Wir können und müssen es durch unser Gebet tun, durch die Konkretheit unserer Hilfe und durch Wallfahrten dorthin. Das Jahr des Glaubens, 50 Jahre nach dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil, stellt einen willkommenen Anlass dar, uns mit dem Herzen auf den Weg zu machen ins Heilige Land, auf den Spuren der Heilsgeheimnisse Christi und in Begleitung der Heiligen Muttergottes. Am kommenden Karfreitag werden wir, um das Kreuz Christi versammelt, uns verbunden fühlen mit diesen unseren Schwestern und Brüdern: Die Einsamkeit, die sie in ihrem Dasein in ganz besonderer Weise erleiden, möge besiegt werden durch unsere Brüderlichkeit. So können sie in Gelassenheit und mit Leib und Seele verkünden, dass "Jesus der Herr" ist (Apg 11,20), auf dass die Öffnung der "Tür des Glaubens" (vgl. Apg 14,27) sich gerade in jenem Land ereigne und von dort Gottes Vergebung und Güte der gesamte Menschheitsfamilie zuteil werde.
Unsere Kongregation möchte sich zum Sprachrohr machen für die Dankbarkeit Papst Benedikts XVI. gegenüber den Oberhirten, den Priestern, den Ordensmännern und -frauen, den Jugendlichen und all denen, die sich für das Land Jesu einsetzen. Zugleich möchte sie auch danken in Namen der Patriarchaldiözese von Jerusalem, der Franziskanischen Kustodie sowie der örtlichen katholischen Ostkirchen.

La espera cuaresmal de la Pascua del Señor es una ocasión propicia para sensibilizar a la entera Iglesia Católica en favor de Tierra Santa, promoviendo iniciativas particulares de oración y de caridad fraterna.
Dirijo, por este motivo, una cordial invitación a todas las comunidades eclesiales con el fin de que se pongan al lado de los cristianos de Jerusalén, Israel y Palestina, así como de los Países circunstantes, Jordania, Siria, Líbano, Chipre y Egipto, los cuales componen juntos la Tierra bendita. El Hijo de Dios hecho hombre, después de haberla atravesado para anunciar el Reino y de haber confirmado la palabra con prodigios y signos (cfr. Hech. 2,22), subió a la Ciudad Santa para inmolarse a sí mismo: ha sufrido, ha muerto en la Cruz, ha resucitado y nos ha dado el Espíritu. Desde entonces todo cristiano se encuentra a sí mismo en aquella Ciudad y en aquella Tierra. Esto es posible porque todavía hoy los pastores puestos por el Señor Jesús reúnen allí a los hermanos y las hermanas en la fe, para celebrar a Aquel que "hace nuevas todas las cosas" (Hech. 21,5).
La Congregación para las Iglesias Orientales recuerda a los Obispos la constante petición del papa Benedicto XVI para que sea generosamente sostenida la misión de la Iglesia en los Lugares Santos. Es una misión específicamente pastoral, pero al mismo tiempo ofrece un encomiable servicio social a todos sin distinción. De esta manera, crece aquella fraternidad que abate las divisiones y las discriminaciones para inaugurar siempre de nuevo el diálogo ecuménico y la colaboración interreligiosa. Esto constituye una admirable obra de paz y de reconciliación, tanto más necesaria hoy, preocupados como estamos, con el Santo Padre, "por la población de los Países que están sufriendo tensiones y violencias, en particular Siria y Tierra Santa" (cfr. Discurso al Cuerpo Diplomático acreditado ante la Santa Sede, de 9 de enero de 2012). Y también sucesivamente Su Santidad rezó por Siria, renovando "la apremiante exhortación a poner fin a la violencia (...) por el bien común de toda la sociedad y de la Región" (Ángelus, domingo 12 de febrero de 2012).
El día que los Sumos Pontífices han elegido para la Colecta pro Terra Sancta es el viernes que precede a la Pascua, si bien cada comunidad puede elegir otra oportuna circunstancia para proponer a los fieles esta iniciativa de solidaridad. El Viernes Santo de este año parece expresar aún con más viveza las necesidades de los pastores y de los fieles, encerrados en medio de los sufrimientos de todo el Medio Oriente. Para los discípulos de Cristo las hostilidades son el pan de cada día que alimenta la fe y, a veces, hace resonar el eco del martirio con toda su actualidad. La emigración cristiana se ha agudizado por la falta de paz, que tiende a debilitar la esperanza, transformándose en el miedo de encontrarse solos ante un futuro que no parece existir, si no es como abandono de la propia Patria.
Como el evangélico grano de trigo (cfr. Jn. 12,24), la fatiga de los cristianos de Tierra Santa prepara sin duda un mañana, pero hoy pide que sean sostenidas las escuelas, la asistencia sanitaria, las necesidades de vivienda, de lugares de vida social y de todo aquello que ha sabido crear la generosidad de la Iglesia. ¡Cuánta fe descubrimos en los jóvenes, deseosos de testimoniar las bienaventuranzas, amando sus Países en el empeño por la justicia y por la paz, con los medios de la no violencia evangélica! ¡Cuánta orgullosa fe, cuánta firmeza, nos transmite quien pronuncia palabras de reconciliación y de perdón, sabiendo que ésa es la respuesta que debe darse a la violencia y a la opresión!
Tenemos el deber de devolver a estos cristianos el patrimonio espiritual que hemos recibido de su milenaria fidelidad a la verdad de la fe cristiana. Podemos y debemos hacerlo con nuestra oración, con lo concreto de nuestras ayudas, con nuestras peregrinaciones. El Año de la Fe, en el Cincuenta aniversario del Concilio Ecuménico Vaticano II, nos aportará particulares motivos para mover nuestros pasos hacia la Tierra Santa, peregrinando ya antes con el corazón entre los misterios de Cristo y en compañía de la Madre del Señor. El próximo Viernes Santo, alrededor de la Cruz de Cristo, nos sentiremos unidos junto a estos hermanos y hermanas nuestros: la soledad que alguna vez se hace presente con fuerza en sus existencias sea vencida por nuestra fraternidad. Y puedan ellos proclamar, en la serenidad del cuerpo y del espíritu que "Jesús es el Señor" (Hech. 11,20) para que "la puerta de la fe" (Hech. 14,27) siga abriéndose de par en par precisamente en aquella Tierra donde se aseguró el perdón y la bondad de Dios hacia la entera familia humana.
Nuestra Congregación se hace portavoz de la gratitud que el Santo Padre Benedicto XVI expresa a los pastores, a los sacerdotes, a los religiosos y a las religiosas, a los jóvenes y a cuantos se prodigan en favor de la Tierra de Jesús. Y, segura de interpretarlos cabalmente, transmite también las gracias de la Diócesis patriarcal de Jerusalén, de la Custodia Franciscana y de las Iglesias Orientales Católicas locales.

Excelência Reverendíssima:
A espera quaresmal da Páscoa do Senhor é uma ocasião propícia para sensibilizar toda a Igreja Católica a favor da Terra Santa, promovendo iniciativas especiais de oração e de caridade fraterna.
Dirijo, portanto, um cordial convite a todas as comunidades eclesiais para que estejam do lado dos cristãos de Jerusalém, Israel e Palestina, como os países circunstantes, Jordânia, Síria, Líbano, Chipre, Egipto, que juntas compõem aquela Terra abençoada. O Filho de Deus feito homem, depois de tê-la cruzado para anunciar o Reino e ter confirmando a palavra com sinais e prodígios (cf. At 2,22), subiu à Cidade Santa para se imolar: ele sofreu, morreu na Cruz, ressuscitou e nos deu o Espírito. Desde então, todo o cristão se encontra a si próprio naquela cidade e naquela Terra. Isto é possível porque ainda hoje os pastores constituídos pelo Senhor Jesus lá acolhem os irmãos e as irmãs na fé para celebrar o amor d'Aquele que "faz novas todas as coisas" (Ap 21,5).
A Congregação para as Igrejas Orientais recorda bispos do mundo inteiro o constante pedido do Papa Bento XVI de que a missão da Igreja nos Lugares Santos seja generosamente sustentada. É uma missão especificamente pastoral, mas ao mesmo tempo oferece a todos indistintamente um louvável serviço social. Assim, cresce a fraternidade que abate as divisões e as discriminações para inaugurar um sempre renovado diálogo ecumênico e a cooperação inter-religiosa. Isto constitui uma admirável obra de paz e de reconciliação, tão mais necessária hoje, preocupados que estamos com o Santo Padre "pelas as populações dos países em que se sucedem tensões e violências, em particular na Síria e na Terra Santa" (Discurso aos Embaixadores para a Santa Sé, 09 de Janeiro de 2012). E mesmo depois de Sua Santidade orou fervorosamente pela Síria, renovando "o pressuroso apelo a por fim à violência ... para o bem comum da sociedade e da Região" (Angelus de domingo, 12 de Fevereiro, 2012).
O dia que os Papas escolheram para a Collecta pro Terra Sancta é a sexta-feira antes da Páscoa, embora cada comunidade possa escolher outra ocasião adequada para propor aos fiéis a iniciativa de solidariedade. A Sexta-Feira Santa deste ano parece interpretar ainda mais as necessidades dos pastores e os fiéis, que se encontram nos sofrimentos de todo o Oriente Médio. Para os discípulos de Cristo as hostilidades são o pão quotidiano que alimenta a fé e que, por vezes, fazem ressoar o eco do martírio em toda a sua atualidade. A emigração de cristãos tem se agravado pela falta de paz, que tenta empobrecer a esperança, transformando-se em medo de estar sozinho perante um futuro que parece não existir, senão como um abandono da própria pátria.
Como para o grão de trigo do Evangelho (cf. Jo 12:24), o lide dos cristãos na Terra Santa prepara sem dúvida um amanhã de bem, mas pede hoje apoiar para apoiar as escolas, programas de saúde, necessidades habitacionais, locais para encontros e tudo o que a generosidade da Igreja tem sabido suscitar. Quanta fé que encontramos nos jovens, desejosos de testemunhar as bem-aventuranças, amando os próprios países no compromisso pela justiça e pela mediante a não-violência evangélica. Quanta altivez na fé, quanta firmeza, nos é transmitida por quem profere palavras de reconciliação e de perdão, sabendo dever responder por esta via à violência e, por vezes, a toda opressão.
Temos o dever de restituir o patrimônio espiritual recebido da sua fidelidade milenária às antigas verdades da fé cristã. Podemos e devemos fazê-lo com nossas orações, com a nossa ajuda concreta, com as peregrinações. O Ano da Fé, no qüinquagésimo aniversário do Concílio Ecumênico Vaticano II, dará motivações singulares para mover nossos passos rumo àquela Terra, peregrinando ainda antes com o seu coração por entre os mistérios de Cristo em companhia da Santa Mãe de Deus. A próxima Sexta-Feira Santa, em torno da cruz de Cristo, nós nos sentiremos unidos com estes nossos irmãos e irmãs: a solidão que, por vezes, se manifesta fortemente na existência deles seja vencida pela nossa fraternidade. E que eles possam proclamar na serenidade do corpo e do espírito de que "Jesus é o Senhor" (Atos 11:20), de modo que "a porta da fé" (Atos 14.27) continua se abrir de par em par precisamente a partir daquela Terra assegurando o perdão e a bondade de Deus para toda a família humana.
Nossa congregação se faz o porta-voz da gratidão que o Papa Bento XVI expressa aos pastores, aos sacerdotes, aos religiosos e às religiosas, aos jovens e todos quantos se dedicam à Terra de Jesus. E está certa de interpretar o muito obrigado da Diocese patriarcal de Jerusalém, da Custódia Franciscana e das Igrejas Orientais Católicas locais.

Rapporto sommario 2010/2011
La Custodia di Terra Santa, prosegue incessantemente il suo cammino secolare, nella conservazione e tutela dei luoghi santi nella Terra di Gesù, per mantenere viva la liturgia nei luoghi di culto, per assistere i Pellegrini, intensificare le opere apostoliche, per sostenere le comunità dei cristiani. Negli anni 2010/2011 ha prestato particolare attenzione alla programmazione e all’esecuzione dei seguenti progetti e opere:

I) PELLEGRINI
1. Betlemme
Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Caterina
Conclusione dei lavori al sistema d’illuminazione interno alla Chiesa di Santa Caterina.
2. Gerusalemme
Convento San Salvatore
Progetto di ristrutturazione dello "Studio Teologico" e opere di restauro di parti del Convento di San Salvatore.
Avvio lavori della Biblioteca Custodiale.
Magnificat – Scuola di musica: ristrutturazione dei servizi igienici, rifacimento della scala d’ingresso.
Ristrutturazione dei servizi igienici nel Convento delle Suore.
Santuario Dominus Flevit
Conclusione del progetto di ristrutturazione del Convento del Dominus Flevit, il Santuario, i giardini e gli spazi riservati all’accoglienza dei pellegrini.
Getsemani
Avvio della procedura di appalto per il rifacimento del muro esterno in pietra, fornitura e installazione del recinto in acciaio, come richiesto dall’Autorità per la natura e l’ambiente israeliana.
È in corso la procedura per il restauro e la manutenzione del tetto della basilica, per evitare le infiltrazioni d’acqua.
Santuario della Flagellazione
Studium Biblicum Francescanum
Conclusione del progetto di ristrutturazione della "Sala dei Crociati" presso il Convento della Flagellazione.
Termine dell’ampliamento della Biblioteca dello Studium Biblicum Francescanum. Il progetto include l’installazione di un ascensore per l’accessibilità ai locali. Inoltre sono stati forniti gli scaffali mobili e fissi.
Progettazione della terza fase di ampliamento della biblioteca al piano superiore, per dividerla in due sezioni.
Convento Betphage
Progetto di ristrutturazione del Convento delle Palme a Betphage, con particolare riguardo all’area esterna, dove sono accolti i pellegrini soprattutto durante la Domenica delle Palme.
Progettazione del restauro della Chiesa e dell’area attorno.
3. Magadala
Chiesa di Maria Maddalena
Continuazione dei lavori di conservazione dell’area archeologica di Magdala, dove sono stati ritrovati importanti resti. E’ stato necessario rimuovere le pavimentazioni di mosaico, che dovranno essere protette adeguatamente dagli agenti atmosferici. E’ in fase di allestimento un percorso di visita, all’interno del sito, per consentire ai pellegrini di approfondire la vita quotidiana della città al tempo di Gesù.
4. Giaffa
Chiesa di S. Antonio
Fase conclusiva del restauro dell’intero complesso conventuale e degli ambienti della Parrocchia Latina.
5. Monte Tabor
Santuario della Trasfigurazione
Terminato il rifacimento dell’impianto elettrico della Basilica e preparazione del progetto di restauro dell’intero complesso, in coordinamento con Israel Antiquities Authority e l’Autorità dei Parchi Nazionali.
6. Nain
Santuario di Nain
Progetto di costruzione del Santuario in ricordo del "miracolo della resurrezione del figlio della vedova".
Conclusione dei lavori di demolizione degli edifici a ridosso della chiesa, con l’avvio del restauro e della costruzione del nuovo convento per le suore.
7. Tabga
Santuario del Primato di Pietro
Progetto per la realizzazione di nuovi servizi igienici presso il Santuario del Primato e altri lavori di restauro conservativo.
8. Monte Nebo (Giordania)
Santuario Memoriale di Mosè
Seconda fase dei lavori di rifacimento e conservazione dei mosaici del Santuario memoriale del Profeta Mosè.
Proseguimento dei lavori del progetto "Nuova copertura per il Memoriale di Mose".
II) COMUNITÀ LOCALE
1. Opere in favore dei giovani
Borse di Studio. Finanziamento di 420 Borse di Studio Universitarie per la durata di quattro anni, distribuite nelle diverse università: Betlemme, Gerusalemme, Haifa, Bir Zeit, Amman e altre.
Imprese Artigiane. Progetto di Sostegno a 10 piccole imprese artigiane con l’acquisto di pezzi di ricambio, apparecchiature per la produzione, ausili per la messa in sicurezza delle attività.
2. Attività per le famiglieBetlemme
Sostegno del Consultorio familiare parrocchiale che supporta a livello assistenziale i bisogni principali delle famiglie.
Casa Francescana del Fanciullo: prosecuzione del progetto rivolto a più di 20 ragazzi di età compresa tra 6 e 12 anni, provenienti da famiglie povere e in difficoltà. I ragazzi sono seguiti nel percorso di accoglienza e assistenza allo studio da un educatore, un assistente sociale e uno psicologo.
Assistenza Medica: copertura parziale o completa dell’intervento rivolto alle famiglie in media e grave difficoltà economica.
Abitazioni: Progetto di ristrutturazione delle case appartenenti alle famiglie più bisognose. L’opera è effettuata da personale locale senza impiego. Oltre all’aiuto alle famiglie, sono assicurati periodicamente decine di posti di lavoro.
3. Comunità parrocchialiGerusalemme
Conclusione del rifacimento e della ristrutturazione della chiesa di San Giacomo in Beit Hanina, del convento con i relativi servizi.
Avvio della procedura di appalto per la costruzione di nuove aree sportive nel centro parrocchiale a Beit Hanina, che include: un campo di calcio, 2 campi di pallacanestro e una sala interna con i relativi servizi.
Lavori di manutenzione e ristrutturazione delle infrastrutture nei complessi residenziali quali St. Anton Building Project, St. Paul Building Project, St. Francis Building Project, St. James Building Project.
Betlemme
Adeguamento dei servizi igienici presso il St. Franicis Millenuim Center, a disposizione di turisti e pellegrini.
Avvio della procedura di appalto per la creazione di laboratori artigianali di legno d’ulivo e madreperla presso il St. Francis Millenium Center.
Lavori di manutenzione e ristrutturazione dei complessi residenziali: Jesus the Child Building project, St. Catherine building project , St. Francis Building project.
Nazareth
Proseguimento della realizzazione di campi di calcio e spazi ricreativi per i bambini della parrocchia di Nazareth.
Conclusione delle opere di rifacimento dell’impianto idraulico presso la Basilica dell’Annunciazione per proteggere la grotta dall’umidità.
Preparazione per l’installazione di un nuovo organo all’interno della Basilica dell’Annunciazione.
Cana
Avvio del progetto di costruzione del centro parrocchiale e della scuola per la popolazione cristiana locale.
Gerico
Costruzione della Sala Parrocchiale adiacente al Santuario del Buon Pastore e prima fase di costruzione della nuova scuola primaria e secondaria.
4. Scuole
Ramleh
Ampliamento e ristrutturazione degli spazi della scuola esistente.
Betlemme
Conclusione della costruzione del teatro, presso la scuola Saint Joseph - Terra Sancta Girls School.
Giordania
Realizzazione di un centro sportivo presso la Terra Santa School di Amman.
5. Costruzione di appartamenti per i poveri e per le giovani coppie
Betfage: Fase conclusiva del progetto di costruzione del nuovo complesso residenziale S. Francis di Betfage. Sono state consegnati 69 appartamenti alle famiglie cristiane di Gerusalemme.
Gerusalemme: Ristrutturazione di circa 75 abitazioni nella città vecchia di Gerusalemme.
Betlemme: Prosecuzione delle opere di manutenzione e risanamento delle case per i poveri, di proprietà della Custodia.
Nazareth: Housing Project in Nazareth. Avvio del progetto per la realizzazione di un complesso residenziale, dove oltre alla Cappella, e alcuni locali per uso sociale si prevede la costruzione di 80 appartamenti da destinare alle giovani famiglie.
6. Opere culturali
Sostegno alla Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Francescanum di Gerusalemme. Offerta di circa 30 borse di studio a studenti provenienti da diverse diocesi, per tutta la durata degli studi.
Franciscan Media Center: nuova forma di comunicazione attraverso un sito web aggiornato, con l’ausilio di network televisivi per diffondere in tempo reale fatti ed eventi legati ai Luoghi santi.
Magnificat: in pochi anni di attività il Magnificat è diventata una scuola di musica, in grado di preparare diversi studenti provenienti da culture diverse. Il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale e internazionale.
Progetto di rinnovo e acquisto dei macchinari per la tipografia della Custodia di Terra Santa a Betfage – Franciscan Print Press
Oltre alle opere realizzate e progettate in Israele e nei Territori Palestinesi, sono stati eseguiti interventi in Siria e Libano.

Report Summary 2010/2011
The Custody of the Holy Land tirelessly continues its mission, begun several centuries ago, to conserve and protect the holy places in the Land of Jesus. This includes celebrating the liturgy, assisting Pilgrims, and carrying out multiple apostolic works, especially for the benefit of the Christian communities. In the year 2010/2011, particular attention has been paid to the planning and execution of projects in the following areas:
HOLY PLACES
I) PILGRIMS
1. Bethlehem
Parish Church of St. Catherine
Completion of work on the lighting system inside the Church of St. Catherine.
2. Jerusalem
Convent of St. Saviour
Renovation of the "Studio Teologico" and restoration of the Convent of St. Saviour.
Work started on the Custodial Library.
Magnificat – School of Music: renovation of bathrooms and entrance stairway.
Renovation of bathrooms in the Sisters’ Convent.
Sanctuary of Dominus Flevit
Completion of restructuring at the Convent of Dominus Flevit, including the sanctuary, gardens and areas reserved for the reception of pilgrims.
Gethsemane
Initial procurement needed for reconstruction of the exterior stone wall, supplies for and installation of steel fence, as required by the Environmental Authorities of Israel.
Beginning restoration and maintenance of the roof of the Basilica of Gethsemane, in order to prevent water seepage.
Sanctuary of the Flagellation
Studium Biblicum Francescanum
Concluding restoration of the "Hall of Crusaders" at the Convent of the Flagellation.
Completing the Library expansion of the Studium Biblicum Francescanum. The project includes the installation of an elevator for greater accessibility to the premises, as well as renovation of mobile and fixed shelving.
Designing the third phase of library expansion, regarding the upper level, which will be divided into two sections.
Convent at Bethpage
Restructuring the Convento delle Palme at Bethpage, with particular regard to the outer area where pilgrims are welcomed, especially for the Palm Sunday procession.
Designing the restoration of the Church at Bethpage and its environs.
3. Magdala
Church of Mary Magdalene
Continuation of work to preserve the archaeological area of Magdala, where important remains have been found. It was necessary to remove the mosaic floors, which must be adequately preserved from the elements. The establishment of a guided tour inside the site, to give pilgrims a deeper understanding of the city’s daily life at the time of Jesus, is underway.
4. Jaffa
Church of St. Anthony
Final phase of restoration of the convent and environs at the Latin Parish.
5. Mount Tabor
Sanctuary of the Transfiguration
Completion of the renovation of the electrical system in the Basilica and preparation for restoration of the entire complex, in coordination with the Israel Antiquities Authority and the National Parks Authority.
6. Nain Sanctuary of Nain
Construction project at the Sanctuary, which commemorates the miracle of the resurrection of the widow’s son.
Completion of house demolitions near the Church, in order to begin construction of a new convent and to allow for the Church restoration project.
7. Tabgha
Sanctuary of the Primacy of Peter
Renovation and completion of new bathroom facilities and other necessary restoration work at the Shrine of the Primacy of Peter.
8. Monte Nebo (Jordan)
Memorial Shrine of Moses
Second stage of reconstruction work and conservation of the mosaics at the memorial shrine of the Prophet Moses.
Continuation of work on the project "New covering for the Memorial of Moses".
II) LOCAL COMMNITY
1. Works for the benefit of youth
Scholarships. Financing of 420 university scholarships over a period of 4 years, distributed to different universities: Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Haifa, Bir Zeit, Amman and others.
Handcraft Enterprises. Support for 10 small craft businesses including the acquisition of spare parts and production equipment, along with safety measure compliance.
2. Activities for familiesBethlehem
Continuation of support for the Parish Family Counselling Centre, which provides assistance for families with critical needs.
Franciscan Boys’ Home. Continuation of the project for more than 20 boys between the ages of 6 and 12, who come from poor families in difficulty. The boys receive hospitality, assistance with studies, and the services of an educator, a social worker and a psychologist.
Medical assistance. Continuation of the project providing medical assistance to families facing serious economic difficulties, including partial or complete coverage of medical expenses.
Housing. Restoration of houses belonging to families in need. Local people without jobs carry out the restoration. In addition to helping families, the project provides temporary work on a regular basis.
3. Parish communitiesJerusalem
Completion of the rebuilding and restructuring of the Church of St. Jacob in Beit Hanina, its convent and related services.
Begin procurement for the construction of new sports areas at the parish centre in Beit Hanina, including a soccer field, two basketball courts and an indoor dining room with related services.
Restoration and maintenance of the infrastructure in residential complexes such as St. Anton Building Project, St. Paul Building Project, St. Francis Building Project, and St. James Building Project.
Bethlehem
Reconfigure bathroom facilities for use by tourists and pilgrims at the St. Francis Millennium Centre.
Begin procurement for the creation of workshops for olive wood and mother of pearl at the St. Francis Millennium Centre.
Renovation and maintenance of residential complexes: Jesus the Child Building Project, St. Catherine Building Project, St. Francis Building Project.
Nazareth
Development of soccer fields and playgrounds for the children of the parish of Nazareth.
Completion of renovation of the hydraulic system at the Basilica of the Annunciation in order to protect the grotto from moisture.
Installation of a new organ in the Basilica of the Annunciation.
Cana
Beginning construction of the parish centre and school for the local Christian population.
Jericho
Construction of parish hall adjacent to the Sanctuary of the Good Shepherd and the first phase of construction of the new primary and secondary school.
4. Schools
Ramleh
Expansion and renovation of existing school areas.
Bethlehem
Completion of construction of the theatre at Saint Joseph – Terra Sancta Girls School.
Jordan
Creation of a sports Centre near the Terra Santa School in Amman.
5. Construction of apartments for the poor and for young couples
Bethpage. Final phase of construction of the new St. Francis Residence in Bethpage. Already 69 apartments were opened for Christian families from Jerusalem.
Jerusalem. Restructuring of approximately 75 homes in the Old City.
Bethlehem. Continuation of renovation and maintenance of housing for the poor on property of the Custody.
Nazareth. Housing Project in Nazareth. Beginning of construction of a residential complex where, in addition to a chapel and social facilities, the construction of 80 apartments is planned for the benefit of young families.
6. Other cultural works
Each year, the Custody of the Holy Land provides financial support to the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Francescanum of Jerusalem. It offers approximately 30 scholarships to students from different dioceses, for the duration of their studies.
Franciscan Media Center. Development of a new form of communication by means of a website updated with the help of television networks, in order to disseminate real-time events related to the Christian holy places.
Magnificat. In a few short years, Magnificat has become a school of music capable of preparing students from a variety of cultures. Magnificat promotes research activities and cultural events both locally and internationally.
Renovation and purchase of printing equipment for the Custody of the Holy Land in Bethpage – Franciscan Printing Press.
In addition to these works, completed or planned in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, activities were also undertaken in Syria and Lebanon.
