Pubblichiamo di seguito il Messaggio del Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per gli Operatori Sanitari ( per la Pastorale della Salute), S.E. Mons. Zygmunt Zimowski, in occasione della 59^a Giornata Mondiale dei Malati di Lebbra che si celebra domenica 29 gennaio 2012:

Le persone curate e sanate dalla lebbra possono e debbono esprimere tutta la ricchezza della loro dignità e spiritualità e, inoltre, una piena solidarietà verso gli altri, soprattutto nei confronti di chi ne è stato egualmente colpito ed è stato segnato indelebilmente dall’infezione! Tutte le realtà impegnate nella lotta al Morbo di Hansen devono al contempo continuare con tenacia il proprio lavoro affinché i successi ottenuti siano resi definitivi e sempre migliorati, riducendo il più possibile le ricadute e i nuovi casi.

Il Mycobacterium Leprae non è stato infatti ancora eradicato, anche se il numero ufficiale di nuovi contagiati continui a decrescere e attualmente sia intorno ai 200mila, secondo le anticipazioni dell’OMS relative al 2010-2011. Oltre a sostenere la distribuzione gratuita dei farmaci necessari, occorre dunque ulteriormente promuovere una diagnostica tempestiva e la perseveranza nel sottoporsi alle terapie. È fondamentale, inoltre, rafforzare l’opera volta a sensibilizzare e a formare le comunità e le famiglie a rischio di contagio.

Il passo evangelico "Alzati e va’; la tua fede ti ha salvato" (Lc 17,19) scelto dal Santo Padre Benedetto XVI come tema della XX Giornata Mondiale del Malato che ricorrerà l’11 febbraio prossimo in tutto il mondo, costituisce un approfondimento e una sollecitazione che toccano in particolar modo chi è stato colpito dall’infezione;  in tale brano si racconta infatti di 10 lebbrosi che vengono guariti da Gesù e riammessi nella comunità, reinseriti nel tessuto sociale e lavorativo.

Come sottolineato dal Santo Padre nel Suo Messaggio di quest’anno, le parole rivolte dal Signore all’uomo che, guarito, ritorna lodando Dio a gran voce e si getta ai piedi di Gesù per ringraziarlo, "aiutano a prendere coscienza dell'importanza della fede per coloro che, gravati dalla sofferenza e dalla malattia, si avvicinano al Signore. Nell'incontro con Lui possono sperimentare realmente che chi crede non è mai solo! Dio, infatti, nel suo Figlio, non ci abbandona alle nostre angosce e sofferenze, ma ci è vicino, ci aiuta a portarle e desidera guarire nel profondo il nostro cuore (cfr Mc 2 , 1-12)".

"La fede di quell'unico lebbroso che, vedendosi sanato, pieno di stupore e di gioia, a differenza degli altri, ritorna subito da Gesù per manifestare la propria riconoscenza – prosegue Benedetto XVI, - lascia intravedere che la salute riacquistata è segno di qualcosa di più prezioso della semplice guarigione fisica, è segno della salvezza che Dio ci dona attraverso Cristo; essa trova espressione nelle parole di Gesù: la tua fede ti ha salvato. Chi, nella propria sofferenza e malattia, invoca il Signore, è certo che il Suo amore non lo abbandona mai, e che anche l'amore della Chiesa, prolungamento nel tempo della sua opera salvifica, non viene mai meno".

Tale amore, che viene espresso anche attraverso l’impegno individuale e delle realtà ecclesiali e di volontariato, fra le quali la Fondazione Raoul Follereau e l’Ordine Sovrano dei Cavalieri di Malta, e i successi sin qui ottenuti, in termini di forte riduzione del numero di infettati, non esimono certamente i governi e gli organismi internazionali dall’aumentare l’attenzione e il lavoro contro la diffusione della lebbra né dalle loro responsabilità per quanto riguarda la prevenzione, in termini educativi e igienico sanitari, e la ‘riammissione’ della persona guarita nonché il sostegno a tutte le vittime dell’infezione.

D’altro lato chi è stato sanato e ha intrapreso la difficile strada del  reinserimento sociale e lavorativo può comunicare la propria gratitudine anche materialmente, diventando egli stesso testimone, contribuendo alla divulgazione dei criteri di prevenzione e di tempestiva identificazione della malattia nonché  al sostegno morale delle persone infettate; quando possibile, inoltre, cooperando con le strutture e le iniziative ad hoc affinché le terapie necessarie vengano completate e seguite dal reinserimento sociale di chi è stato sanato. Chi è giunto alla guarigione potrà in tal modo comunicare tutta la propria ricchezza interiore ed esperienza e al contempo, nell’aiutare il prossimo, tutta la propria dignità e profondità di persona toccata dalla sofferenza e impegnata in favore della salute della comunità d’appartenenza.

Ciò costituirà un ulteriore e rilevante contributo al progresso nella lotta al Morbo di Hansen che per millenni ha rappresentato una piaga terrificante e l’automatica esclusione dalla società. Sarà infatti solamente l’impegno di tutti e a tutti i livelli che consentirà di trasformare la lebbra, da minaccia e flagello a memoria, per quanto spaventosa, del passato.

A Maria, Madre di Misericordia e Salute degli Infermi, affidiamo i nostri fratelli e sorelle colpiti dalla lebbra, affinché la Sua materna compassione e vicinanza li accompagni sempre anche nella quotidianità della vita.

Les personnes soignées et guéries de la lèpre peuvent et doivent exprimer toute la richesse de leur dignité et spiritualité ainsi qu’une entière solidarité envers les autres et, surtout envers ceux qui ont été atteints et marqués de manière indélébile par l’infection! Toutes les réalités engagées dans la lutte contre la maladie de Hansen doivent en même temps continuer avec ténacité leur travail afin que les succès obtenus soient définitifs ou améliorés, en réduisant le plus possible les rechutes et les nouvelles infections.

Le Mycobacterium Leprae n’a pas encore été éradiqué, même si le nombre officiel de nouvelles contagions continue à décroître et se situe actuellement aux alentours de 200.000, selon les anticipations de l’OMS pour l’année 2010-2011. En plus du soutien à la distribution gratuite des médicaments nécessaires, il faut donc promouvoir à nouveau un diagnostic en temps utile et la persévérance dans la soumission aux traitements. Il est fondamental, en outre, de renforcer l’action destinée à sensibiliser et à former les communautés et les familles exposées au risque de contagion.

Le passage évangélique «Relève-toi, va; ta foi t’a sauvé» (Lc 17,19) choisi par le Saint-Père Benoît XVI comme thème de la XXème Journée mondiale du Malade qui sera célébrée le 11 février prochain, constitue un approfondissement et une sollicitation touchant de manière particulière celui qui a été contaminé; dans ce passage, on parle en effet de 10 lépreux qui ont été guéris par Jésus et admis de nouveau dans la communauté, réintégrés dans le tissu social et du travail.

Comme le Saint-Père l’a souligné dans son message de cette année, les paroles que le Seigneur adresse à l’homme qui, guéri, revient en louant Dieu à haute voix et se jette aux pieds de Jésus pour le remercier, «aident à prendre conscience de l’importance de la foi pour ceux qui, marqués par la souffrance et la maladie, s’approchent du Seigneur. Dans leur rencontre avec Lui, ils peuvent réellement faire l’expérience que celui qui croit n’est jamais seul! En effet, Dieu, dans son Fils ne nous abandonne pas à nos angoisses et à nos souffrances, mais Il nous est proche, Il nous aide à les porter et Il désire nous guérir au plus profond de notre cœur» (cf. Mc 2, 1-12)».

«La foi de ce lépreux qui, se voyant guéri, plein d’étonnement et de joie, à la différence des autres, revient, seul, vers Jésus pour lui manifester sa reconnaissance – poursuit Benoît XVI – laisse entrevoir que la santé recouverte est signe de quelque chose de plus précieux que la simple guérison physique, elle est un signe du salut que Dieu nous donne par le Christ; elle trouve une expression dans les paroles de Jésus: ta foi t’a sauvé. Quiconque, dans la souffrance et la maladie, invoque le Seigneur peut être certain que son amour ne l’abandonnera jamais et que, l’amour de l’Église aussi, prolongement dans le temps de son œuvre salvifique, ne manquera jamais».

Cet amour, -qui est également exprimé par l’engagement individuel comme par celui des réalités ecclésiales et de bénévolat, parmi lesquelles la Fondation Raoul Follereau et l’Ordre Souverain des Chevaliers de Malte-, ainsi que les succès obtenus jusqu’à présent en terme de diminution importante du nombre de contaminés ne dispensent pas certainement les gouvernements et les organismes internationaux d’intensifier l’attention et le travail contre la diffusion de la lèpre ni de leurs responsabilités pour ce qui concerne la prévention en terme d’éducation, d’hygiène, de santé comme de la «réintégration» de la personne guérie et du soutien à toutes les victimes de la maladie.

D’autre part, celui qui a été guéri et a entrepris le parcours difficile de la réintégration dans la vie sociale et dans le monde du travail peut communiquer sa gratitude de façon matérielle également, en devenant lui-même un témoin, en contribuant à la divulgation des critères de prévention et d’identification rapide de la maladie ainsi qu’au soutien moral des personnes contaminées; dans la mesure du possible, en plus, en collaborant avec les structures et les initiatives ad hoc, afin que les traitements nécessaires soient effectués et suivis de la réinsertion sociale de celui qui a été guéri. La personne guérie pourra ainsi communiquer toute sa richesse intérieure et son expérience et, en même temps, par le biais de l’aide au prochain, sa profonde dignité de personne marquée par la souffrance et engagée en faveur de la santé de sa propre communauté.

Cela constituera une contribution ultérieure et importante au progrès dans la lutte contre la maladie de Hansen qui, pendant des millénaires, a représenté une plaie terrible et l’exclusion automatique de la société. En réalité, seul l’engagement de tous et à tous les niveaux permettra de transformer la lèpre, de menace et de fléau en souvenir, si même épouvantable mais du passé.

À Marie, Mère de la miséricorde et Santé des malades, nous confions nos frères et sœurs atteints de la lèpre, afin que sa compassion maternelle et très proche les accompagne toujours, dans la quotidienneté de la vie également.

"In the Fight Against Hansen’s Disease the Commitment of All Men of Good Will in Required"

People treated for, and cured of, leprosy can, and must, express all of the riches of their dignity and spirituality, as well as full solidarity towards others, above all those who have been equally afflicted and have been marked indelibly by this infection! All the forces involved in the fight against Hansen’s disease must at the same time continue their work tenaciously so that the successes that have been obtained are made definitive and always improved, reducing as much as possible relapses and new cases.

Mycobacterium Leprae, in fact, has not as yet been eradicated, even though the official number of new cases of the infection continues to decrease and at the present time are about 200,000, according to the estimates of the World Health Organisation for the years 2010-2011. In addition to supporting the free distribution of those drugs and medicines that are required, one should, therefore, further promote speedy diagnosis and perseverance in receiving therapies. It is of fundamental importance, furthermore, that the work directed towards sensitising and training communities and families that run the risk of contagion be strengthened.

The gospel phrase ‘Stand and go; your faith has saved you’ (Lk 17:19), chosen by the Holy Father Benedict XVI as the theme for the twentieth World Day of the Sick which will be held on 11 February of this year throughout the world, constitutes an exploration and a call that touches in a particular way those who have been afflicted by this infection; in this passage from St. Luke, indeed, we are told about ten lepers who were healed by Jesus, readmitted to the community and reintegrated into the social and occupational fabric.

As is emphasised by the Holy Father in his Message for this year, ‘help us to become aware of the importance of faith for those who, burdened by suffering and illness, draw near to the Lord. In their encounter with him they can truly experience that he who believes is never alone! God, indeed, in his Son, does not abandon us to our anguish and sufferings, but is close to us, helps us to bear them, and wishes to heal us in the depths of our hearts (cf. Mk 2:1-12).

The faith of the lone leper who, on seeing that he was healed, full of amazement and joy, and unlike the others, immediately went back to Jesus to express his gratitude, enables us to perceive that reacquired health is a sign of something more precious than mere physical healing, it is a sign of the salvation that God gives us through Christ; it finds expression in the words of Jesus: your faith has saved you. He who in suffering and illness prays to the Lord is certain that God's love will never abandon him, and also that the love of the Church, the extension in time of the Lord's saving work, will never fail’.

This love, which is also expressed through individual action and through Church institutions and volunteer organisations, amongst which the Raoul Follereau Foundation and the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta, as well as the successes that have been obtained hitherto in terms of a strong reduction in the number of people infected by this disease, certainly do not exempt governments and international organisations from increasing the attention they pay to, and their work to combat, the spread of leprosy, or from their responsibilities as regards prevention, in educational and hygiene/health-care terms, and the ‘readmission’ of people who have been cured, as well as support for all the victims of infection.

On the other hand, those who have been cured and have followed the difficult pathway of social reintegration can communicate their gratitude in a practical way as well, becoming themselves witnesses, contributing to the dissemination of the criteria of prevention and the swift identification of this disease, as well as providing moral support for those people who have been infected; and, where possible, in addition, cooperating with institutions and ad hoc initiatives so that the necessary therapies are completed and then followed by the social reintegration of those who have been cured. Those who have attained a cure can in this way communicate all their interior riches and experience and at the same time, in helping their neighbour, all their dignity and profundity as people touched by suffering and involved in working for the health of the community to which they belong.

This will amount to a further and relevant contribution to progress in the fight against Hansen’s disease which for millennia has constituted a terrible scourge and involved automatic exclusion from society. Indeed, only the involvement of everyone – and at all levels – will allow the transformation of leprosy from being a threat and a scourge into being a memory, however frightening, of the past.

To Mary, Mother of Mercy and Health of the Sick, we entrust our brothers and sisters who are afflicted by leprosy so that her maternal compassion and nearness may accompany them always, in the daily events of life as well.
