● VISITA ALLA CHIESA PATRIARCALE ARMENA APOSTOLICA DI JERUSALEM

 Alle ore 11.10, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI giunge alla Chiesa Patriarcale Armena Apostolica di Jerusalem, che ha sede nel Monastero di San Giacomo, ed è accolto dal Patriarca Sua Beatitudine Torkom II Manoukian.

Quindi, nella Chiesa dove si trovano riunite alcune centinaia di fedeli, dopo il discorso del Patriarca Armeno Apostolico, il Santo Padre pronuncia il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:

Your Beatitude,

I greet you with fraternal affection in the Lord, and I offer prayerful good wishes for your health and your ministry. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit this Cathedral Church of Saint James in the heart of the ancient Armenian quarter of Jerusalem, and to meet the distinguished clergy of the Patriarchate, together with the members of the Armenian community of the Holy City.

Our meeting today, characterized by an atmosphere of cordiality and friendship, is another step along the path towards the unity which the Lord desires for all his disciples. In recent decades we have witnessed, by God’s grace, a significant growth in the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church. I count it a great blessing to have met in this past year with the  Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and with the Catholicos of Cilicia Aram I. Their visits to the Holy See, and the moments of prayer which we shared, have strengthened us in fellowship and confirmed our commitment to the sacred cause of promoting Christian unity.

In a spirit of gratitude to the Lord, I wish also to express my appreciation of the unwavering commitment of the Armenian Apostolic Church to the continuing theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. This dialogue, sustained by prayer, has made progress in overcoming the burden of past misunderstandings, and offers much promise for the future. A particular sign of hope is the recent document on the nature and mission of the Church produced by the Mixed Commission and presented to the Churches for study and evaluation. Together let us entrust the work of the Mixed Commission once more to the Spirit of wisdom and truth, so that it can bear abundant fruit for the growth of Christian unity, and advance the spread of the Gospel among the men and women of our time.

From the first Christian centuries, the Armenian community in Jerusalem has had an illustrious history, marked not least by an extraordinary flourishing of monastic life and culture linked to the holy places and the liturgical traditions which developed around them. This venerable Cathedral Church, together with the Patriarchate and the various educational and cultural institutions attached to it, testifies to that long and distinguished history. I pray that your community will constantly draw new life from its rich traditions, and be confirmed in its witness to Jesus Christ and the power of his resurrection (cf. Phil 3:10) in this Holy City. I likewise assure the families present, and particularly the children and young people, of a special remembrance in my prayers. Dear friends, I ask you in turn to pray with me that all the Christians of the Holy Land will work together with generosity and zeal in proclaiming the Gospel of our reconciliation in Christ, and the advent of his Kingdom of holiness, justice and peace.

Your Beatitude, I thank you once more for your gracious welcome, and I cordially invoke God’s richest blessings upon you and upon all the clergy and faithful of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Holy Land. May the joy and peace of the Risen Christ be always with you.

La saluto con fraterno affetto nel Signore, ed esprimo i migliori oranti auguri per la Sua salute ed il Suo ministero. Sono riconoscente per l’opportunità di visitare questa Chiesa Cattedrale di San Giacomo nel cuore dell’antico quartiere Armeno di Gerusalemme, e di incontrare il distinto clero del Patriarcato, insieme con i membri della comunità Armena della Città Santa.

Il nostro odierno incontro, caratterizzato da una atmosfera di cordialità ed amicizia, è un ulteriore passo nel cammino verso l’unità che il Signore desidera per tutti i suoi discepoli. Negli ultimi decenni, abbiamo sperimentato, per grazia di Dio, una significativa crescita nelle relazioni tra la Chiesa Cattolica e la Chiesa Apostolica Armena. Considero una grande benedizione l’essermi incontrato l’anno scorso con il Supremo Patriarca e Catholicos di tutti gli Armeni Karekin II e con il Catholicos di Cilicia Aram I. La loro visita alla Santa Sede, ed i momenti di preghiera che abbiamo condiviso, ci hanno rafforzati nell’amicizia ed hanno confermato il nostro impegno per la sacra causa della promozione dell’unità dei Cristiani.

In spirito di gratitudine al Signore, desidero anche esprimere il mio apprezzamento per il deciso impegno della Chiesa Apostolica Armena a proseguire nel dialogo teologico fra la Chiesa Cattolica e le Chiese Ortodosse Orientali. Questo dialogo, sostenuto dalla preghiera, ha fatto progressi nel superare il fardello di malintesi passati ed offre molte promesse per il futuro. Un particolare segno di speranza è il recente documento sulla natura e la missione della Chiesa preparato dalla Commissione Mista e presentato alle Chiese per essere studiato e valutato. Affidiamo insieme il lavoro della Commissione Mista ancora una volta allo Spirito di sapienza e verità, perché possa portare frutti abbondanti per la crescita dell’unità dei Cristiani e far progredire l’espansione del Vangelo fra gli uomini e le donne del nostro tempo.

Fin dai primi secoli cristiani, la comunità Armena di Gerusalemme ha avuto una illustre storia, segnata come non ultima cosa da uno straordinario rifiorire di vita e cultura monastica collegate con i luoghi santi e con le tradizioni liturgiche che si sono sviluppate attorno ad essi. Questa venerabile Chiesa cattedrale, assieme al Patriarcato e alle varie istituzioni educative e culturali con esso connesse, rendono testimonianza di questa lunga e distinta storia. Prego affinché la vostra comunità possa costantemente trarre nuova vita da queste ricche tradizioni ed essere confermata nella fedele testimonianza a Gesù Cristo e alla potenza della sua risurrezione (cfr Fil 3,10) in questa Città Santa. Ugualmente assicuro le famiglie presenti, e in particolare i bambini e i giovani, di un speciale ricordo nelle mie preghiere. Cari amici, a mia volta chiedo a voi di pregare con me affinché tutti i Cristiani della Terra Santa lavorino assieme con generosità e zelo annunciando il Vangelo della nostra riconciliazione in Cristo, e l’avvento del suo Regno di santità, di giustizia e di pace.

Beatitudine, La ringrazio una volta ancora per il cortese benvenuto e cordialmente invoco le più ricche benedizioni di Dio su di Lei e su tutto il clero e i fedeli della Chiesa Apostolica Armena nella Terra Santa. Che la gioia e la pace del Cristo Risorto siano sempre con voi.
