All’arrivo all’aeroporto "4 de Fevereiro" di Luanda, alle ore 12.45, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI è accolto dal Presidente della Repubblica di Angola, S.E. il Sig. José Eduardo dos Santos, con la Consorte, e successivamente dall’Arcivescovo di Luanda e Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale dell’Angola e São Tomé (CEAST), S.E. Mons. Damião António Franklin. Presenti numerose Autorità politiche e civili; il Nunzio Apostolico S.E. Mons. Giovanni Angelo Becciu; i Vescovi dell’Angola e un gruppo di giovani.

Dopo il saluto del Presidente della Repubblica, S.E. Sig. José Eduardo dos Santos, il Papa pronuncia il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:

Excelentíssimo Senhor Presidente da República,
Ilustríssimas Autoridades civis e militares,
Venerados Irmãos no Episcopado,
Queridos amigos angolanos!

Com um profundo sentimento de respeito e simpatia, piso o solo desta nobre e jovem Nação no âmbito duma visita pastoral, que, no meu espírito, tem por horizonte o continente africano, mas os passos tive de os limitar a Yaoundé e Luanda. Saibam porém que, no meu coração e oração, tenho presentes a África em geral e o povo de Angola em particular, a quem desejo oferecer o meu cordial encorajamento a prosseguir no caminho da pacificação e da reconstrução do país e das instituições.

 Senhor Presidente, começo por lhe agradecer o amável convite que me fez para visitar Angola e as cordiais expressões de boas-vindas que acaba de me dirigir. Aceite a minha deferente saudação e venturosos votos, que estendo às demais autoridades que gentilmente vieram receber-me. Saúdo toda a Igreja Católica em Angola na pessoa dos seus Bispos aqui presentes e agradeço a todos os amigos angolanos o caloroso acolhimento que me reservaram. A quantos me acompanham pela rádio e televisão chegue a expressão da minha amizade, com a certeza da benevolência do Céu sobre a missão comum que nos está confiada: construirmos juntos uma sociedade mais livre, mais pacífica e mais solidária.

 Como não recordar aquele ilustre visitante que abençoou Angola no mês de Junho de 1992: o meu amado antecessor João Paulo II?! Incansável missionário de Jesus Cristo até aos confins da terra, mostrou o caminho para Deus, convidando todos os homens de boa vontade a escutarem a própria consciência rectamente formada e a edificarem uma sociedade de justiça, paz e solidariedade, na caridade e no perdão recíproco. Quanto a mim, venho de um país onde a paz e a fraternidade são caras aos corações de todos os habitantes, em particular de quantos – como eu – conheceram a guerra e a separação entre irmãos pertencentes à mesma nação, por causa de ideologias devastadoras e desumanas que, sob a falsa aparência de sonhos e ilusões, faziam pesar sobre os homens o jugo da opressão. Compreendeis por isso como sou sensível ao diálogo entre os homens para superar qualquer forma de conflito e de tensão e fazer de cada nação – e, por conseguinte, também da vossa Pátria – uma casa de paz e fraternidade. Com tal finalidade, deveis tirar do vosso património espiritual e cultural os valores melhores de que Angola é portadora, para irdes ao encontro uns dos outros sem medo, aceitando partilhar as próprias riquezas espirituais e materiais em benefício de todos.

 Como não pensar aqui nas populações da província do Kunene flageladas por chuvas intensas e aluviões que provocaram numerosos mortos e deixaram tantas famílias desalojadas pela destruição das suas casas? Àquelas provadas populações desejo neste momento fazer chegar a certeza da minha solidariedade juntamente com um particular encorajamento à confiança para recomeçarem com a ajuda de todos.

 Queridos amigos angolanos, o vosso território é rico; a vossa nação é forte. Usai, porém, estes vossos créditos para favorecer a paz e o entendimento entre os povos, numa base de lealdade e igualdade que promova na África aquele futuro pacífico e solidário a que todos aspiram e têm direito. Para isso, vos peço: Não vos rendais à lei do mais forte! Porque Deus concedeu aos seres humanos voar, sobre as suas tendências naturais, com as asas da razão e da fé. Se vos deixardes levar por elas, não será difícil reconhecer no outro um irmão que nasceu com os mesmos direitos humanos fundamentais. Infelizmente, dentro das vossas fronteiras angolanas, há ainda tantos pobres que reclamam o respeito dos seus direitos. Não se pode esquecer a multidão de angolanos que vive abaixo da linha de pobreza absoluta. Não desiludam as suas expectativas!

 Trata-se de uma obra imensa, que requer uma maior participação cívica de todos. É necessário envolver nela a sociedade civil angolana inteira, mas esta precisa de apresentar-se mais forte e articulada tanto entre as forças que a compõem como também no diálogo com o Governo. Para dar vida a uma sociedade verdadeiramente atenta ao bem comum, são necessários valores compartilhados por todos. Estou convencido de que Angola poderá encontrá-los também hoje no Evangelho de Jesus Cristo, como sucedeu tempos atrás com um vosso ilustre antepassado, Dom Afonso I Mbemba-a-Nzinga; há quinhentos anos, deu ele início em Mbanza Congo a um reino cristão que sobreviveu até ao século XVIII. Das suas cinzas pôde depois surgir, já na passagem do século XIX para o XX, uma Igreja renovada que não pára de crescer até aos dias de hoje, graças a Deus! Eis o motivo imediato que me trouxe a Angola: encontrar-me com uma das mais antigas comunidades católicas da África sub-equatorial, para a confirmar na sua fé em Jesus ressuscitado e unir-me às preces de seus filhos e filhas para que o tempo da paz, na justiça e na fraternidade, não conheça ocaso em Angola, permitindo-lhe cumprir a missão que Deus lhe confiou em favor do seu povo e no concerto das nações. Deus abençoe Angola!

Cari amici angolani!

Con vivi sentimenti di deferenza e amicizia, metto piede sul suolo di questa nobile e giovane Nazione nell’ambito di una visita pastorale che, nel mio spirito, ha per orizzonte il Continente africano, anche se i miei passi ho dovuto circoscriverli a Yaoundé e Luanda. Sappiano tutti però che, nel mio cuore e nella mia preghiera, ho presenti l’Africa in generale e il popolo di Angola in particolare, al quale desidero offrire un cordiale incoraggiamento a proseguire sulla via della pacificazione e della ricostruzione del Paese e delle istituzioni.

 Signor Presidente, inizio con il ringraziare per l’amabile invito che Ella mi ha fatto di visitare l’Angola e per le cordiali espressioni di benvenuto appena rivoltemi. Voglia gradire i miei deferenti saluti e i migliori auguri, che estendo alle altre Autorità qui gentilmente convenute ad accogliermi. Saluto tutta la Chiesa cattolica in Angola nella persona dei suoi Vescovi qui presenti, e ringrazio tutti gli amici angolani dell’affettuosa accoglienza che mi hanno riservato. A quanti mi seguono mediante la radio e la televisione, giunga pure l’espressione della mia amicizia, con la certezza della benevolenza del Cielo sopra la comune missione che c’è stata affidata: quella d’edificare insieme una società più libera, più pacifica e più solidale.

 Come non ricordare quell’illustre Visitatore che benedisse l’Angola nel mese di giugno 1992: il mio amato Predecessore Giovanni Paolo II? Instancabile missionario di Gesù Cristo fino agli estremi confini della terra, egli ha indicato la via verso Dio, invitando tutti gli uomini di buona volontà ad ascoltare la propria coscienza rettamente formata e ad edificare una società di giustizia, di pace e di solidarietà, nella carità e nel perdono vicendevole. Quanto a me, vi ricordo che provengo da un Paese dove la pace e la fraternità sono care ai cuori di tutti i suoi abitanti, in particolare di quanti – come me – hanno conosciuto la guerra e la divisione tra fratelli appartenenti alla stessa Nazione a causa di ideologie devastanti e disumane, le quali, sotto la falsa apparenza di sogni e illusioni, facevano pesare sopra gli uomini il giogo dell’oppressione. Potete dunque capire quanto io sia sensibile al dialogo fra gli uomini come mezzo per superare ogni forma di conflitto e di tensione e per fare di ogni Nazione – e quindi anche della vostra Patria – una casa di pace e di fraternità. In vista di tale scopo, dovete prendere dal vostro patrimonio spirituale e culturale i valori migliori, di cui l’Angola è portatrice, e farvi gli uni incontro agli altri senza paura, accettando di condividere le personali ricchezze spirituali e materiali a beneficio di tutti.

 Come non pensare qui alle popolazioni della provincia di Kunene flagellate da piogge torrenziali e alluvioni, che hanno provocato numerosi morti e hanno lasciato tante famiglie prive di alloggio per la distruzione delle loro case? A quelle popolazioni provate desidero far giungere in questo momento l’assicurazione della mia solidarietà, insieme con un particolare incoraggiamento alla fiducia per ricominciare con l’aiuto di tutti.

 Cari amici angolani, il vostro territorio è ricco; la vostra Nazione è forte. Utilizzate queste vostre prerogative per favorire la pace e l’intesa fra i popoli, su una base di lealtà e di uguaglianza che promuovano per l’Africa quel futuro pacifico e solidale al quale tutti anelano e hanno diritto. A tale scopo vi prego: Non arrendetevi alla legge del più forte! Perché Dio ha concesso agli esseri umani di volare, al di sopra delle loro tendenze naturali, con le ali della ragione e della fede. Se vi fate sollevare da queste ali, non vi sarà difficile riconoscere nell’altro un fratello, che è nato con gli stessi diritti umani fondamentali. Purtroppo dentro i vostri confini angolani ci sono ancora tanti poveri che rivendicano il rispetto dei loro diritti. Non si può dimenticare la moltitudine di angolani che vivono al di sotto della linea di povertà assoluta. Non deludete le loro aspettative!

 Si tratta di un’opera immane, che richiede una più grande partecipazione civica da parte di tutti. È necessario coinvolgere in essa l’intera società civile angolana; questa però ha bisogno di presentarsi all’appuntamento più forte e articolata, sia tra le forze che la compongono come anche nel dialogo con il Governo. Per dare vita ad una società veramente sollecita del bene comune, sono necessari valori da tutti condivisi. Sono convinto che l’Angola li potrà trovare anche oggi nel Vangelo di Gesù Cristo, come accadde tempo addietro con un vostro illustre antenato, Dom Afonso I Mbemba-a-Nzinga; per opera sua, cinquecento anni fa è sorto in Mbanza Congo un regno cristiano che sopravvisse fino al XVIII secolo. Dalle sue ceneri poté poi sorgere, a cavallo dei secoli XIX e XX, una Chiesa rinnovata che non ha cessato di crescere fino ai nostri giorni; ne sia ringraziato Dio! Ecco il motivo immediato che mi ha portato in Angola: ritrovarmi con una delle più antiche comunità cattoliche dell’Africa sub-equatoriale, per confermarla nella sua fede in Gesù risorto ed associarmi alle suppliche dei suoi figli e figlie affinché il tempo della pace, nella giustizia e nella fraternità, non conosca tramonto in Angola, consentendole di adempiere alla missione che Dio le ha affidato in favore del suo popolo e nel concerto delle Nazioni. Dio benedica l’Angola!

Chers Frères dans l’épiscopat,
Chers amis Angolais!

 C’est avec des sentiments de déférente amitié que je foule le sol de cette noble et jeune Nation dans le cadre d’une visite pastorale qui, à mes yeux, a comme horizon le continent africain tout entier, même si j’ai dû limiter mes pas à Yaoundé et à Luanda. Tous, nous savons bien que je garde dans mon cœur et ma prière l’Afrique tout entière et le peuple Angolais en particulier auquel je désire offrir mes encouragements cordiaux à progresser sur les chemins de la pacification et de la reconstruction du pays et de ses institutions.

 Monsieur le Président, permettez-moi d’abord de vous remercier pour l’aimable invitation que vous m’avez faite à venir visiter l’Angola et pour les mots de cordiale bienvenue que vous venez de m’adresser. Veuillez accepter mes salutations respectueuses et mes vœux les meilleurs, que j’étends aux autres Autorités qui sont venues pour m’accueillir ici. En la personne de ses Évêques ici présents, je salue l’ensemble de l'Église catholique en Angola. Et je vous remercie, vous tous, amis Angolais, pour l’accueil affectueux que vous me réservez. J’assure aussi de mon amitié ceux qui m’écoutent par la radio et la télévision, dans la certitude que le Ciel veille avec bienveillance sur la mission qui nous a été confiée à tous: édifier ensemble une société plus libre, plus pacifique et plus solidaire.

 Comment ne pas évoquer ici le souvenir de l’illustre visiteur qui bénit l’Angola au mois de juin de 1992, mon bien-aimé prédécesseur le Pape Jean-PaulII? Missionnaire infatigable de Jésus Christ, jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre, il a montré le chemin vers Dieu, invitant tous les hommes de bonne volonté à écouter la voix de leur conscience formée dans la droiture, et à construire une société de justice, de paix et de solidarité, dans la charité et le pardon réciproques. Quant à moi, vous le savez, je viens d’un pays dont les habitants ont une haute estime de la paix et de la fraternité, en particulier ceux qui – comme moi – ont connu la guerre et la division entre frères d’une même Nation en raison d’idéologies destructrices et inhumaines qui faisaient peser le joug de l’oppression sous la fausse apparence du rêve et de l’illusion. Vous pouvez donc comprendre combien le dialogue entre les hommes est important à mes yeux, car il permet de dépasser toutes les formes de conflits et de tensions et de faire de chaque Nation – et donc de votre Patrie – une maison de paix et de fraternité. Pour atteindre ce but, vous devez puiser dans votre patrimoine spirituel et culturel les valeurs positives dont l’Angola est riche, et aller sans peur à la rencontre les uns des autres, en acceptant de partager pour le bien de tous les richesses spirituelles et matérielles.

 Comment ne pas penser aux populations de la province de Kunene frappées par des pluies torrentielles et des inondations qui ont provoqué de nombreuses victimes et ont laissé tant de familles privées de toit en raison de la destruction de leur maison? À ces populations éprouvées, je désire en cet instant transmettre l’assurance de ma solidarité ainsi qu’une invitation particulière à la confiance pour reprendre, avec l’aide de tous, une vie normale.

 Chers amis Angolais, votre territoire est riche; votre Nation est forte. Utilisez ces atouts pour favoriser la paix et l’entente entre les peuples, sur une base de loyauté et d’égalité capable de promouvoir en Afrique l’avenir pacifique et solidaire auquel tous aspirent et auquel tous ont droit. Pour cela, je vous en prie, ne vous laissez pas prendre par la loi du plus fort! Car Dieu a accordé aux hommes le pouvoir de s’élever avec les ailes de la raison et de la foi, au-dessus de leurs inclinations naturelles. Si vous vous laissez emporter sur ces ailes, il ne vous sera pas difficile alors de reconnaître dans l’autre un frère, né avec les mêmes droits humains fondamentaux. À l’intérieur de vos frontières, se trouvent malheureusement encore tant de pauvres qui demandent le respect de leurs droits. Il n’est pas possible d’oublier la multitude des Angolais qui vivent au-dessous du seuil de pauvreté absolue. Ne décevez pas leurs attentes!

 Il s’agit là d’une immense entreprise, qui requiert le plus grand civisme possible de la part de tous. Il y faut l’engagement de la société civile angolaise tout entière; mais elle doit se présenter à ce rendez-vous plus forte et plus organisée, que ce soit entre ses diverses composantes ou dans le dialogue avec le Gouvernement. Pour donner naissance à une société véritablement soucieuse du bien commun, des valeurs partagées par tous sont nécessaires. Je suis convaincu que l’Angola pourra les trouver aujourd’hui encore dans l’Évangile de Jésus Christ, tout comme cela fut, il y a bien longtemps, avec votre illustre ancêtre, Dom Afonso I Mbemba-a-Nzinga; grâce à lui, il y a cinq cents ans, fut établi au Mbanza Congo un royaume chrétien qui a subsisté jusqu’au XVIII^e siècle. De ses cendres prit naissance, à la fin du XIX^e siècle et au début du XX^e siècle, une Église renouvelée qui n’a pas cessé de grandir jusqu’à nos jours; que Dieu en soit remercié! C’est là le motif premier qui a conduit mes pas en Angola: aller à la rencontre d’une des plus anciennes communautés catholiques de l’Afrique sub-équatoriale, pour la confirmer dans sa foi en Jésus Christ et pour m’unir aux supplications de ses fils et de ses filles afin que le temps de la paix, dans la justice et dans la fraternité, ne connaisse pas de déclin en Angola, lui donnant ainsi la possibilité d’accomplir la mission que Dieu lui a confiée à l’égard de son peuple et dans le concert des Nations. Que Dieu bénisse l’Angola!

Dear Angolan Friends,

 With sincere sentiments of respect and friendship, I set foot on the soil of this noble and young nation in the course of a pastoral visit in which I intend to reach out to the entire African continent, even if it has been necessary to restrict the itinerary to Yaoundé and to Luanda. I would like everyone to know, however, that I keep very much in my heart and in my prayers Africa in general and the people of Angola in particular, whom I warmly encourage to continue along the path of peace-building and reconstruction of the country and its institutions.

 Mr President, I begin by thanking you for your kind invitation to visit Angola and for the warm words of welcome that you have just addressed to me. Please accept my respectful greetings and my very best wishes, which I also extend to the other Authorities who have kindly come here to receive me. I greet the whole of the Catholic Church in Angola in the persons of the Bishops here present, and I thank all my Angolan friends for the affectionate welcome they have given me. To those who are listening on radio and television, I offer a further cordial greeting, certain of Heaven’s blessing on the common mission that has been entrusted to us: that of building together a freer and more peaceful society, marked by greater solidarity.

 How can I fail to recall the famous visitor who blessed Angola in June 1992: my beloved Predecessor John Paul II? A tireless missionary of Jesus Christ to the furthest ends of the earth, he pointed out the way towards God, inviting all people of good will to listen to their own rightly formed consciences and to build a society of justice, of peace and of solidarity, in mutual charity and forgiveness. For my part, I remind you that I come from a country where peace and fraternity are dear to the hearts of all its people, in particular those, like myself, who have known war and division between family members from the same nation as a result of inhuman and destructive ideologies, which, under the false appearance of dreams and illusions, caused the yoke of oppression to weigh down upon the people. You can therefore understand how keenly aware I am of dialogue as a way of overcoming every form of conflict and tension and making every nation – including your own – into a house of peace and fraternity. With this in view, you must take from your spiritual and cultural heritage the best values that Angola possesses, and go out to meet one another fearlessly, agreeing to share personal resources, both spiritual and material, for the good of all.

 How can our thoughts not turn also to the people from the province of Kunene, who have been afflicted by torrential rains and floods, causing numerous deaths and leaving many families without shelter through the destruction of their homes? At this time I would like to offer those people the assurance of my solidarity, together with a particular encouragement to have the confidence to start again with the help of all.

 Dear Angolans, your land is abundant and your nation is mighty. Make use of these advantages to build peace and understanding between peoples, based upon loyalty and equality that can promote for Africa the peaceful future in solidarity that everyone longs for and to which everyone is entitled. To this end, I ask you: do not yield to the law of the strongest! God has enabled human beings to fly, over and above their natural tendencies, on the wings of reason and faith. If you let these wings bear you aloft, you will easily recognize your neighbour as a brother or sister, born with the same fundamental human rights. Unfortunately, within the borders of Angola, there are still many poor people demanding that their rights be respected. The multitude of Angolans who live below the threshold of absolute poverty must not be forgotten. Do not disappoint their expectations!

 This is a huge task, requiring greater civic participation on everyone’s part. It is necessary to involve the whole of Angolan civil society in this effort; but society needs to grow stronger and more articulated, both among its constitutive elements and in its dialogue with the Government, before it can take up the challenge. Before there can be a society that is truly solicitous for the common good, there have to be common values, shared by all. I am convinced that modern Angola will be able to find such values in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as happened long ago, at the time of your illustrious forebear, Dom Alphonsus I Mbemba-a-Nzinga. Through his efforts, five hundred years ago, a Christian kingdom emerged in Mbanza Congo which survived until the eighteenth century. From its ashes, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a renewed Church could arise which has continued to grow right up to our own days; may God be thanked for it! This is the immediate occasion for my visit to Angola: to be together with one of the oldest Catholic communities in sub-equatorial Africa, to strengthen it in its faith in the risen Jesus and to join its sons and daughters in praying that this time of peace in Angola, in justice and fraternity, may prove lasting, allowing the community to carry out the mission that God has entrusted to it for the good of its people within the family of Nations. May God bless Angola!
