At the invitation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, the office entrusted with implementing the charitable initiatives of the Holy Father, will travel to the Philippines from 19 to 24 January for the Plenary Assembly being held in Manila. During the meeting the Cardinal will reflect together with the Bishops on the teaching reaffirmed in the first Encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, and listen to the diverse experiences of the local churches.

Catholics constitute 90 percent of the total population in the Philippines – the largest such figure in the whole of Asia. Since the arrival of Christianity over 400 years ago, the country has been enriched by the growth of the Church and the fidelity of the Filipino people, which is beautifully expressed in the Church’s numerous charitable activities. With today’s rapidly changing economic, social and demographic realities, the Philippines face new challenges and opportunities, which have significant consequences for charitable ecclesial organizations operating in the nation. The mission of diakonia is part of the very essence of the Church and is a vital element in her ministry to the poor. It follows that the role of the Bishop or local Ordinary is fundamental; indeed the ultimate responsibility for charitable action is his.

In the course of his trip, Cardinal Cordes will visit the poor, the sick and the suffering. He will deliver lectures and discuss the different facets of charity with priests, seminarians, charity workers and various lay groups. He will also meet the President of the Philippines and will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tómas, Manila, the oldest university in Asia and one of the world’s largest Catholic universities.

Su invito della "Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines" (CBCP), il Cardinale Paul Josef Cordes, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio Cor Unum, Dicastero incaricato di promuovere le iniziative caritative del Santo Padre, si recherà nelle Filippine dal 19 al 24 gennaio prossimi in occasione dell’Assemblea Plenaria dei Presuli filippini, che si terrà a Manila. Il Porporato rifletterà con i Vescovi sugli elementi teologici evidenziati dalla prima Enciclica di Papa Benedetto XVI, Deus caritas est, anche per acquisire, a partire dall’attività delle Chiese particolari, elementi utili alle responsabilità che ha il Pontificio Consiglio a livello mondiale.

I cattolici filippini costituiscono circa il 90% della popolazione, la percentuale più alta in tutta l’Asia. Sin da quando il cristianesimo è giunto nel paese più di 400 anni fa, la crescita della Chiesa e la fedeltà alla fede sono divenute caratteristiche distintive della nazione, espresse anche in numerose opere caritative. Oggi, nel contesto di un tessuto economico, sociale e demografico caratterizzato da mutamenti repentini, le Filippine sono di fronte a nuove sfide ed opportunità da cogliere, con importanti risvolti per le organizzazioni ecclesiali che operano in ambito caritativo. La missione della diakonia rimane comunque indispensabile sia per i poveri del paese, sia per manifestare l’essenza stessa della Chiesa e, poiché è una delle tre missioni ecclesiali, è primario il ruolo del Vescovo o dell’Ordinario locale, in quanto ad egli compete la responsabilità ultima dell’impegno caritativo.

Nel corso della visita, il Cardinale Cordes terrà incontri e conferenze sulla carità davanti a sacerdoti, seminaristi, dirigenti ed operatori di organismi caritativi e gruppi di laici. Incontrerà anche il Presidente delle Filippine e riceverà inoltre una laurea honoris causa della "Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tómas" di Manila, la più antica Università dell’Asia e uno dei più grandi atenei cattolici nel mondo.
