Pubblichiamo di seguito il Messaggio che il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha inviato al Presidente della Repubblica di Ungheria, S.E. il Signor László Sólyom, in occasione del 50° anniversario dell’insurrezione di Budapest:

1956. október 23-án Budapest bátor népe, szabadságvágyától vezérelve szembeszállt egy olyan rendszerrel, amely a magyar nemzet értékeitől eltérő célokat érvényesített. Még mindig élénken emlékezünk a néhány nap alatt többezer emberéletet és sokezer sebesültet követelő, egyben világszerte súlyos megrendülést kiváltó tragikus eseményekre. Tiszteletreméltó elődöm, XII. Pius pápa helyénvaló megnyilatkozásai máig hallhatóan visszhangzanak. Ő azonnal – négy alkalommal – megszólalt, nyomatékosan kérte a nemzetek közösségét, hogy ismerje el Magyarország jogát az önrendelkezésre, és garantálja a szükséges szabadságot a nemzeti önazonosság keretei között. Szívesen csatlakozom azokhoz a különféle kezdeményezésekhez, amelyek e jelentős, a magyar nemzet és Európa történetében egyaránt fontos eseményről emlékeznek meg. Éppen ezért kértem a Bíborosi Kollégium dékánját, Angelo Sodano bíboros urat – aki rövid idővel ezelőttig államtitkárom volt –, hogy nevemben vegyen részt az ünnepségeken, és legyen tolmácsa legbensőbb érzelmeimnek, amelyeket a budapesti fölkelés 50. évfordulóján élnek szívemben.

Elnök Úr, kérem Önt, hogy legátusomat, Angelo Sodano bíboros urat, úgy szíveskedjék fogadni, mintha engem fogadna. Egyben szívesen élek az alkalommal, hogy emlékeztessek arra az ezer éves megértésre, amely az Apostoli Szentszék és a nemes magyar nép közötti kapcsolatok alapját képezi. Szívesen gondolok arra, hogy az Ön Népe, Elnök Úr, az évszázadok során megtapasztalt sok-sok elnyomatás – legutóbb a szovjet kommunista diktatúra – ellenére, bármely ideológián túl, mindig helyesen értékelte az államnak és az állampolgárnak egymáshoz való viszonyát. A keresztény felfogás szerint a személy – erkölcsi, etikai és szociális mivoltában – megelőzi az államot. Az állam törvényes szervezete és annak helyesen értelmezett laicitása mindig a természettörvény tiszteletben tartásán nyugodott, a hiteles nemzeti értékekben nyilvánult meg, és a hívő emberek számára a Kinyilatkoztatással gazdagodott. Ez a keresztény felfogás a kezdetektől áthatotta azokat a népeket, amelyekből a történelem során a magyar nemzet megszületett. Őszinte szívvel ismétlem meg jókívánságomat, hogy Magyarország szabad jövőt építhessen, amely mentes bármely elnyomástól és ártalmas szellemi behatástól.

Elnök Úr, miközben arra kérem, számítson azok közé, akik szívesen emlékeznek meg e nagy horderejű történelmi eseményről, kívánom, hogy ez a megemlékezés alkalmul szolgáljon azon eszmények és erkölcsi értékek hiteles felmutatásához, amelyek annak az Európának vetették meg alapjait, amelynek Magyarország is része. Országa, Elnök Úr, továbbra is legyen az emberi személy tiszteletén ill. magas céljainak megbecsülésén nyugvó társadalom szószólója.

Mária, a Magyarok Nagyasszonya, Szent István király, Szent Erzsébet és mindazon szentek, akik a nemes pannon föld szülöttei, őrködjenek továbbra is a magyar nép legitim törekvései fölött. Biztosítom Önt lelki közelségemről, és rokonszenvem és együttérzésem jeleként szívesen adom Önre és honfitársaira különleges apostoli áldásomat.

President of the Republic of Hungary

On 23 October 1956, the courageous people of Budapest struggled to express their desire for freedom, in the face of a regime that was pursuing ends contrary to the values of the Hungarian Nation. Memories are still vivid of the tragic events that, in the space of a few days, left thousands of people dead or wounded, and caused deep distress throughout the world. At that time the grief-stricken appeals of my venerable Predecessor Pope Pius XII resounded strongly; with four impassioned public interventions, he pleaded insistently that the International Community recognize Hungary’s right to self-determination, within a framework of clear national identity, in order to guarantee true freedom. I gladly support the various initiatives planned to commemorate this significant event, so vital for the history of the Hungarian People and for Europe. It is for this reason that I have asked the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, until recently my Secretary of State, to be present at the celebrations in my name and to voice the sentiments that arise in my heart on this Fiftieth Anniversary of the Budapest uprising.

Mr President, in asking you to receive my Legate a Latere, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, with the same honour that you would show to me, I gladly take the opportunity to call to mind the thousand-year-old agreement that governs relations between the Apostolic See and the noble people of Hungary. At the same time, I am pleased to observe, Mr President, that despite all the oppression they have endured down the centuries, most recently from Soviet Communism, your people have always maintained the correct evaluation of the relationship between the State and citizens, beyond all ideology. According to the Christian vision that inspired the various peoples who were to form the Hungarian Nation, the human person, with his legitimate moral, ethical and social aspirations, takes precedence over the State. The legal structure and the secular nature of the State have always been conceived with respect for natural law expressed in authentic national values which, for believers, are enriched by Revelation. The heartfelt wish that I now renew is that Hungary may build a future free from all forms of oppression and ideological conditioning. Mr President, I ask you to count me among those who gratefully commemorate this most important historical event, and I pray that it will provide an occasion for timely reflection on the moral, ethical and spiritual ideals and values that have shaped Europe, of which Hungary is a part. May your country, Mr President, continue to promote a civilization based on respect for the human person and his supreme destiny.

May Mary, the Magna Domina Hungarorum, Saint Stephen, Saint Elizabeth and the other saints from the noble land of Pannonia continue to watch over the legitimate aspirations of the Hungarian people. I assure them of my spiritual closeness, and as a sign of my constant affection, I impart to you and to your compatriots a special Apostolic Blessing.

Il 23 ottobre del 1956 il coraggioso popolo di Budapest dovette confrontarsi con il proprio desiderio di libertà, a fronte di un regime che perseguiva fini difformi dai valori della Nazione ungherese. E’ ancor vivo nella memoria il ricordo dei tragici eventi che provocarono, nel giro di pochi giorni, migliaia di vittime e di feriti, destando nel mondo grave turbamento. Risuonarono allora forti le accorate considerazioni del mio venerato Predecessore il Papa Pio XII, il quale, attraverso ben quattro vibranti interventi pubblici, chiese con insistenza alla Comunità Internazionale il riconoscimento dei diritti dell’Ungheria all’autodeterminazione, in un quadro di sostanziale identità nazionale, che garantisse la necessaria libertà. Volentieri aderisco alle varie iniziative programmate per commemorare un così significativo evento, quanto mai importante per la storia del Popolo ungherese e per l’Europa. E proprio per questo ho chiesto al Decano del Collegio cardinalizio, il Signor Cardinale Angelo Sodano, sino a poco tempo fa mio Segretario di Stato, di partecipare a mio nome alle celebrazioni e di rendersi interprete degli intimi sentimenti che albergano nel mio cuore nel 50° anniversario dell’insurrezione di Budapest.

Signor Presidente, nel domandarLe di voler accogliere il mio Legato a Latere, il Signor Cardinale Angelo Sodano, con la stessa deferenza con la quale accoglierebbe me, colgo volentieri l’occasione per sottolineare la millenaria intesa che anima i rapporti tra la Sede Apostolica e il nobile Popolo ungherese. Al tempo stesso, mi piace rilevare come il Suo Popolo, Signor Presidente, nonostante le oppressioni subite lungo i secoli, e da ultimo quella sovietico-comunista, abbia sempre tenuto nella giusta valutazione il rapporto fra Stato e cittadino, al di là di ogni ideologia. Secondo la visione cristiana, a cui si sono ispirate le popolazioni che hanno dato vita alla Nazione ungherese, la persona con le sue legittime aspirazioni morali, etiche e sociali precede lo Stato. La struttura legale dello Stato e la sua giusta laicità sono sempre state concepite nel rispetto della legge naturale tradotta negli autentici valori nazionali e, per i credenti, arricchita dalla Rivelazione. L’auspicio che di cuore rinnovo è che l’Ungheria possa costruire un futuro libero da ogni oppressione e condizionamento ideologico.

Signor Presidente, mentre Le domando di annoverarmi tra quanti fanno grata memoria di un evento storico di così grande rilievo, auspico che esso sia motivo di provvida riflessione sugli ideali e sui valori morali, etici e spirituali che hanno costruito l’Europa, di cui l’Ungheria è parte. Possa il Suo Paese, Signor Presidente, continuare a farsi paladino di una proposta di civiltà basata sul rispetto della persona umana e sul primato dei suoi alti destini.

Maria, la Magna Domina Hungarorum, santo Stefano, santa Elisabetta e gli altri santi che annovera la nobile Terra di Pannonia continuino a vegliare sulle legittime aspirazioni del Popolo ungherese. Io assicuro la mia spirituale vicinanza e, in segno del mio costante affetto, imparto a Lei e ai Suoi Compatrioti una speciale Benedizione Apostolica.
