Questa sera, il Direttore della Sala Stampa della Santa Sede, Rev.do P. Federico Lombardi, S.J., a proposito dell’interpretazione di alcuni passi del discorso del Santo Padre all’Università di Regensburg, ha rilasciato ai giornalisti la seguente dichiarazione:
A proposito delle reazioni di esponenti musulmani circa alcuni passi del discorso del Santo Padre all’Università di Regensburg, è opportuno rilevare che – come risulta da una attenta lettura del testo – ciò che sta a cuore al Santo Padre è un chiaro e radicale rifiuto della motivazione religiosa della violenza.
Non era certo nelle intenzioni del Santo Padre svolgere uno studio approfondito sulla jihad e sul pensiero musulmano in merito, e tanto meno offendere la sensibilità dei credenti musulmani.
Anzi, nei discorsi del Santo Padre appare chiaramente il monito, rivolto alla cultura occidentale, perché si eviti "il disprezzo di Dio e il cinismo che considera il dileggio del sacro un diritto della libertà" (discorso del 10.9), la giusta considerazione della dimensione religiosa è infatti premessa essenziale per un fruttuoso dialogo con le grandi culture e religioni del mondo. Proprio nelle conclusioni del discorso all’Università di Regensburg, Benedetto XVI ha affermato: "Le culture profondamente religiose del mondo vedono proprio nella esclusione del divino dall’universalità della ragione un attacco alle loro convinzioni più intime. Una ragione che di fronte al divino è sorda e respinge la religione nell’ambito delle sottoculture, è incapace di inserirsi nel dialogo delle culture".
È chiara quindi la volontà del Santo Padre di coltivare un atteggiamento di rispetto e di dialogo verso le altre religioni e culture, evidentemente anche verso l’islam.

This evening, Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J. released the following declaration to journalists concerning the interpretation of certain passages of the Holy Father's address at the University of Regensburg:
Concerning the reaction of Muslim leaders to certain passages of the Holy Father's address at the University of Regensburg, it should be noted that what the Holy Father has to heart - and which emerges from an attentive reading of the text - is a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence.
It was certainly not the intention of the Holy Father to undertake a comprehensive study of the jihad and of Muslim ideas on the subject, still less to offend the sensibilities of Muslim faithful.
Quite the contrary, what emerges clearly from the Holy Father's discourses is a warning, addressed to Western culture, to avoid "the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom" (homily, September 10). A just consideration of the religious dimension is, in fact, an essential premise for fruitful dialogue with the great cultures and religions of the world. And indeed, in concluding his address in Regensburg, Benedict XVI affirmed how "the world's profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions. A reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures".
What is clear then, is the Holy Father's desire to cultivate an attitude of respect and dialogue towards other religions and cultures, including, of course, Islam.
