Alle 12.15 il Santo Padre arriva all’aeroporto di München dove ha luogo la Cerimonia di congedo. Dopo il saluto del Ministro Presidente della Baviera, S.E. il Sig. Edmund Stoiber, il Papa pronuncia il discorso che pubblichiamo di seguito:

Sehr geehrter Herr Ministerpräsident,
sehr geehrte Mitglieder der Regierung,
meine verehrten Herren Kardinäle,
liebe Mitbrüder im Bischofsamt,
sehr geehrte Damen und Herren!

Im Moment, da ich Bayern verlasse, um nach Rom zurückzukehren, möchte ich an alle, die hier zugegen sind – und in ihnen an alle Bürger meiner Heimat – einen herzlichen Gruß und ein Wort eines wirklich ganz von Herzen tief empfundenen Dankes sagen. Unauslöschlich trage ich in meinem Herzen den bewegenden Eindruck, den die Begeisterung und die spürbar starke Religiosität der großen Massen von Gläubigen in mir ausgelöst hat, die in andächtiger Sammlung beim Hören des Wortes Gottes und im Gebet verharrten und mich auf Straßen und Plätzen begrüßt haben. Ich habe bemerken können, wie viele Menschen in Bayern sich auch jetzt bemühen, in Gemeinschaft mit ihren Hirten auf den Wegen Gottes zu gehen, und sich engagieren, um ihren Glauben in der heutigen säkularisierten Welt zu bezeugen und als formende Kraft gegenwärtig werden zu lassen. Dank dem unermüdlichen Einsatz der Organisatoren hat alles in Ruhe und Ordnung und in Freude ablaufen können. Eben darum ist mein erstes Wort bei diesem Abschied ein Wort des Dankes an alle, die dafür mitgeholfen haben. Herzlich „Vergelt’s Gott" kann auch ich nur sagen.

Zunächst natürlich denke ich an Sie, Herr Ministerpräsident, dem ich für die Worte danke, die Sie gesprochen haben und in denen Sie ein großes Zeugnis für unseren christlichen Glauben als formende Kraft unseres öffentlichen Lebens abgelegt haben. Herzlichen Dank dafür! Ich danke den staatlichen und kirchlichen Persönlichkeiten, die hier zusammengekommen sind, besonders denen, die zum vollständigen Gelingen dieses Besuches beigetragen haben, bei dem ich überall freudig mir verbundene Menschen dieses Landes begegnen konnte, denen auch ich im Herzen immer tief verbunden bleibe. Es waren intensive Tage, und in meinem Gedächtnis konnte ich viele Ereignisse der Vergangenheit, die mein Leben geprägt haben, noch einmal neu erleben. Überall bin ich mit größter Zuvorkommenheit und Aufmerksamkeit, ich muß mehr sagen: mit größter Herzlichkeit empfangen worden; das hat mich tief beeindruckt. Ich kann mir die Schwierigkeiten, die Sorgen und Mühen wohleinigermaßen vorstellen, die die Organisation meines Besuches in Bayern mit sich gebracht hat: Viele Menschen aus den Dienststellen der Kirche, aus zivilen Behörden sowohl des Landes als auch des Staates wie vor allem auch eine ganz große Zahl von freiwilligen Helfern waren damit beschäftigt. Allen sage ein ganz herzliches „Vergelt’s Gott", mit der Zusicherung meines Gebetes für Euch alle.

Ich bin nach Deutschland, nach Bayern, gekommen, um meinen Landsleuten die immerwährendenWahrheiten des Evangeliums als gegenwärtige Wahrheit und Kraft nahezubringen und die Gläubigen zu stärken in der Treue zu Christus, dem Sohn Gottes, der Mensch geworden ist zu unserem Heil. Im Glauben bin ich gewiß, daß sich in ihm, in seinem Wort, der Weg finden läßt, um nicht nur die ewige Glückseligkeit zu erlangen, sondern auch um eine menschenwürdige Zukunft schon auf dieser unsererErde zu bauen. Von diesem Bewußtsein angetrieben, hat die Kirche unter der Führung des Geistes die Antworten auf die Herausforderungen, die im Laufe der Geschichte auftraten, immer neu im Wort Gottes gefunden. Das hat sie ganz speziell auch für die Probleme zu tun versucht, die sich vor allem von der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts an im Zusammenhang mit der sogenannten „Arbeiterfrage" stellten. Ich unterstreiche das bei diesem Anlaß, weil gerade heute, am 14. September, der 25. Jahrestag der Veröffentlichung der Enzyklika Laborem exercens ist, in der der große Papst Johannes Paul II. die Arbeit als eine „fundamentale Dimension menschlicher Existenz auf Erden" bezeichnet (Nr. 4) und daran erinnert hat, daß „die erste Grundlage für den Wert der Arbeit der Mensch selbst ist" (Nr.6). Sie ist darum „ein Gut für den Menschen", merkte er an, „weil er durch die Arbeit nicht nur die Natur umwandelt und seinen Bedürfnissen anpaßt, sondern auch sich selbst als Mensch verwirklicht, ja gewissermaßen »mehr Mensch wird«" (Nr. 9). Auf der Basis dieser Grundintuition gab der Papst in der Enzyklika einige Orientierungen, die bis heute aktuell sind. Auf diesen Text, der durchaus prophetischen Wert besitzt, möchte ich auch die Bürger meiner Heimat verweisen, weil ich sicher bin, daß seine praktische Anwendung auch für die heutige gesellschaftliche Situation inDeutschland von großem Nutzen sein wird.

Zum Abschied von meiner geliebten Heimat vertraue ich nun Gegenwart und Zukunft Bayerns und ganz Deutschlands der Fürsprache aller Heiligen an, die im treuen Dienst Christi auf deutschem Boden gelebt und in ihrem Leben die Wahrheit jener Worte erfahren haben, welche die verschiedenen Stationen des Besuches als Leitmotiv begleitet haben: „Wer glaubt, ist nie allein." Diese Erfahrung hat sicher auch der Autor unseres Bayernhymnusgemacht. Mit seinen Worten, mit den Worten unserer Hymne, die auch ein Gebet sind, möchte ich meiner Heimat gern noch einen Segenswunsch hinterlassen: „Gott mit dir, du Land der Bayern, deutsche Erde, Vaterland! / Über deinen weiten Gauen ruhe seine Segenshand! / Er behüte deine Fluren, schirme deiner Städte Bau / Und erhalte dir die Farben seines Himmels weiß und blau!"

Allen ein herzliches „Vergelt’s Gott" und: "Auf Wiedersehen!", so Gott will.

Signori Cardinali e venerati Fratelli nell'Episcopato,
Illustri Signori, gentili Signore!

Nel momento di lasciare la Baviera per fare ritorno a Roma, desidero rivolgere a voi qui presenti, e in voi a tutti i cittadini della mia Patria, un cordiale saluto e insieme una parola di ringraziamento proveniente veramente dal profondo del cuore. Porto impresse indelebilmente nell'animo le emozioni suscitate in me dall'entusiasmo e dalla intensa religiosità di vaste moltitudini di fedeli, che si sono devotamente raccolte nell'ascolto della Parola di Dio e nella preghiera e che mi hanno salutato per le strade e nelle piazze. Ho potuto rendermi conto di quante persone, in Baviera, anche oggi si sforzano di camminare sulle strade di Dio in comunione con i loro Pastori, impegnandosi a rendere testimonianza della loro fede nell'attuale mondo secolarizzato e a renderla presente in esso come forza plasmante. Grazie alla infaticabile dedizione degli organizzatori, tutto ha potuto svolgersi nell'ordine e nella tranquillità, nella comunione e nella gioia. La mia prima parola, in questo commiato, deve dunque essere di gratitudine a tutti coloro che hanno collaborato per ottenere questo risultato. Posso solo dire di tutto cuore: "Dio ve ne renda merito!"

Naturalmente, il mio pensiero va innanzitutto a Lei, Signor Ministro Presidente, che ringrazio per le parole da Lei pronunciate, con cui ha reso una grande testimonianza in favore della nostra fede cristiana quale forza plasmante della nostra vita pubblica. Grazie di cuore per questo! Ringrazio le altre Personalità civili ed ecclesiastiche qui convenute, in particolare quelle che hanno contribuito alla perfetta riuscita di questa visita, nel corso della quale ho potuto incontrare dappertutto persone di questa Terra che mi testimoniavano il loro gioioso affetto e a cui anche il mio cuore resta sempre profondamente legato. Sono stati giorni intensi, e nel ricordo ho potuto rivivere tanti eventi del passato che hanno segnato la mia esistenza. Ovunque ho ricevuto un'accoglienza piena di premure e di attenzioni, devo dire di più, un’accoglienza all'insegna della più grande cordialità. Questo mi ha intimamente toccato. Posso in qualche misura immaginare le difficoltà, le preoccupazioni, la fatica che l'organizzazione della mia visita in Baviera ha comportato: vi sono state coinvolte molte persone appartenenti sia agli organismi della Chiesa che alle strutture pubbliche tanto della Regione quanto dello Stato e soprattutto anche un grande numero di volontari. A tutti dico un "Dio ve ne renda merito" che parte dal profondo del cuore ed è accompagnato dall'assicurazione della mia preghiera per voi tutti.

Sono venuto in Germania, in Baviera, per riproporre ai miei concittadini le eterne verità del Vangelo come verità e forza attuali e confermare i credenti nell'adesione a Cristo, Figlio di Dio fattosi uomo per la nostra salvezza. Sono convinto nella fede che in Lui, nella sua parola, si trova la via non solo per raggiungere la felicità eterna, ma anche per costruire un futuro degno dell'uomo già su questa nostra terra. Animata da questa consapevolezza, la Chiesa sotto la guida dello Spirito, ha trovato sempre di nuovo nella Parola di Dio le risposte alle sfide emergenti nel corso della storia. Questo ha cercato di fare, in particolare, anche per i problemi manifestatisi nel contesto della cosiddetta "questione operaia", soprattutto a partire dalla seconda metà del secolo XIX. Lo sottolineo in questa circostanza, perché proprio oggi, 14 settembre, cade il 25° anniversario della pubblicazione dell'Enciclica Laborem exercens, con la quale il grande Papa Giovanni Paolo II ha indicato nel lavoro "una dimensione fondamentale dell'esistenza dell'uomo sulla terra" (n. 4) e ha ricordato a tutti che, cito, "il primo fondamento del valore del lavoro è l'uomo stesso" (n. 6). Il lavoro pertanto, egli annotava, è "un bene dell'uomo", perché con esso "l'uomo non solo trasforma la natura adattandola alle proprie necessità, ma anche realizza se stesso come uomo ed anzi, in un certo senso, diventa più uomo" (n. 9). Sulla base di questa intuizione di fondo, il Papa indicava nell'Enciclica alcuni orientamenti che restano attuali anche oggi. A quel testo non privo di valore profetico vorrei rimandare anche i cittadini della mia Patria, nella certezza che da una sua applicazione concreta potranno derivare grandi vantaggi anche per l'odierna situazione sociale in Germania.

Ed ora, nel congedarmi dalla mia amata Patria, affido il presente ed il futuro della Baviera e della Germania all'intercessione di tutti i Santi che sono vissuti sul territorio tedesco servendo fedelmente Cristo e sperimentando nella loro esistenza la verità di quelle parole che hanno accompagnato come leitmotiv le varie fasi della visita: "Chi crede non è mai solo". Questa esperienza ha fatto sicuramente anche l'autore del nostro inno bavarese. Con le sue parole, con le parole del nostro inno, che sono anche una preghiera, mi piace lasciare ancora un augurio alla mia Patria: "Dio sia con te, Paese dei Bavaresi, terra tedesca, Patria! / Sopra i tuoi vasti territori riposi la sua mano benedicente! / Egli protegga la tua campagna e gli edifici delle tue città / e conservi a te i colori del suo cielo bianco e azzurro!"

A tutti un cordiale "Vergelt's Gott" e "Arrivederci", se Dio vuole.

Ladies and Gentlemen!

As I leave Bavaria for Rome, I would like to say to you here present, and through you to all the citizens of my native land, a cordial farewell and to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was deeply moved by the enthusiasm and fervent devotion of the faithful who gathered devoutly to hear the Word of God and to join in prayer, and who greeted me in the streets and squares. I was able to see how many people in Bavaria still today are endeavouring to journey in communion with their Bishops along the paths of God and to testify to their faith in today’s secularized world and to make it present in that world as a shaping force. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the organizers, everything took place in an orderly and peaceful way, in fellowship and joy. And so my first word, in this farewell, must be one of thanks to all who cooperated in achieving these results. I can only say whole-heartedly: "May God reward you!".

Naturally, I turn first to you, Mr Minister President, with gratitude for the kind words which you have rendered a great witness on behalf of our Christian faith as a force for shaping our public life. Heartfelt thanks for this! I thank the other civil and ecclesiastical authorities gathered here, especially those who contributed to the success of this visit, which enabled me to meet everywhere people from this region who testified to me their joyful affection and to whom my heart remains always bound. These have been busy days, when I was able to re-live in memory many past events which have left a mark on my life. Everywhere I was received with an attention and care, and, I must say more, a welcome marked by the greatest cordiality. This has touched me deeply. I can in some way imagine the challenges, concerns and the work involved in organizing my visit to Bavaria: many people had a part to play, both those from the Church, Regional and State agencies, and the many people who volunteered their time. To all of you I offer a heartfelt "May God reward you!" and the assurance of a special remembrance in my prayers.

I came to Germany, to Bavaria, to bring once more to my fellow-citizens the eternal truths of the Gospel as a truth and power for today, and to confirm believers in their fidelity to Christ, the Son of God, who became man for our salvation. I am convinced, in faith, that in Christ, in his word, we find the way not only to eternal happiness, but also to the building of a humane future even now, on this our land. Impelled by this conviction, the Church, led by the Spirit, has constantly looked to the Word of God so as to be able to respond to new historical challenges. She sought to do so in a special way with regard to the problems arising from the so-called "worker question", beginning particularly in the second half of the nineteenth century. I mention this here, because today, 14 September, marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of the Encyclical Laborem Exercens, in which the great Pope John Paul II called work "a fundamental dimension of man’s existence on earth" (No. 4), and insisted that "the primary basis of the value of work is man himself" (No. 6). Work, he observed, is therefore "something good for man", because with it "man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his own needs, but also achieves fulfilment as a human being, and, in a certain sense, becomes more human" (No. 9). On the basis of this profound intuition, the Pope offered in his Encyclical some guidelines which are still helpful today. That text was not lacking in prophetic value, and I would like to recommend it to the people of my native land. I am certain that its concrete application will prove very beneficial in Germany’s present situation.

And now, as I take leave of my beloved homeland, I entrust the present and future of Bavaria and of Germany to the intercession of all those saints who lived in German territory, faithfully serving Christ and experiencing in their lives the truth expressed in the words which have been like a leitmotif during the various parts of my visit: "Those who believe are never alone". This too was surely the experience of the composer of our Bavarian anthem. In his words, in the words of our anthem, which are also a prayer, I would like to leave behind my own prayer for my homeland: "God be with you, land of the Bavarian people, German soil, my native land! Upon your vast borders may his hand rest in blessing! May he watch over your countryside and cities, and keep for you the colours of his white and blue sky!".

To everyone I offer a hearty "Vergelt’s Gott" and "Auf Wiedersehen", if God so wills.
