All’arrivo all’aeroporto internazionale di München, previsto per le ore 15.30, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI è accolto dal Presidente della Repubblica Federale di Germania, S.E. il Signor Horst Köhler, dal Cancelliere Federale, S.E. la Signora Angela Merkel, dal Ministro Presidente della Baviera, S.E. il Signor Edmund Stoiber, dall’Arcivescovo di München und Freising, Em.mo Card. Friedrich Wetter, dal Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale di Germania e Vescovo di Mainz, Em.mo Card. Karl Lehmann, e da numerose Autorità ecclesiastiche, politiche e civili.

Dopo il saluto del Presidente Federale, S.E. il Sig. Horst Köhler, il Papa pronuncia il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:

Sehr geehrter Herr Bundespräsident,
verehrte Frau Bundeskanzlerin,
sehr geehrter Herr Ministerpräsident,
meine verehrten Herren Kardinäle,
liebe Mitbrüder im Bischofsamt,
sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
liebe Landsleute!

Bewegten Herzens betrete ich heute zum ersten Mal nach meiner Erhebung auf den Stuhl Petri bayerischen deutschen Boden. Ich kehre in meine Heimat, zu meinen Landsleuten, zurück in der Absicht, einige Orte zu besuchen, die in meinem Leben eine grundlegende Bedeutung hatten. Ich danke Ihnen, verehrter Herr Bundespräsident, für die herzlichen Worte, mit denen Sie mich willkommengeheißen haben. In diesen Worten habe ich die Resonanz der Empfindungen unseres ganzen Volkes wahrgenommen. Ich danke der Frau Bundeskanzlerin, Dr. Angela Merkel, und dem Herrn Ministerpräsidenten, Dr. Edmund Stoiber, für die Freundlichkeit, mit der sie meine Ankunft auf deutschem und bayerischem Boden ehren. Mein dankbarer Gruß gilt darüber hinaus den Regierungsmitgliedern und den kirchlichen, zivilen und militärischen Persönlichkeiten, die sich hier versammelt haben, sowie allen, die gekommen sind, um mich in dieser für mich so bedeutsamen Reise zu empfangen.

In diesem Augenblick steigen in meinem Innern viele Erinnerungen an die in München und Regensburg verbrachten Jahre auf – Erinnerungen an Menschen und Ereignisse, die tiefe Spuren in mir hinterlassen haben. Im Bewußtsein all dessen, was ich empfangen habe, bin ich hier vor allem, um meine herzliche Dankbarkeit zum Ausdruck zu bringen, die ich all denen gegenüber empfinde, die zur Formung meiner Persönlichkeit in den Jahrzehnten meines Lebens beigetragen haben. Aber ich bin hier auch als Nachfolger des Apostels Petrus, um die tiefen Bindungen zwischen dem Römischen Bischofssitz und der Kirche in unserer Heimat erneut zu bekräftigen und zu bestätigen.

Es sind Bindungen, die in ihrer jahrhundertelangen Geschichte stets lebendig erhalten wurden durch die Treue zu den Werten des christlichen Glaubens, derer sich gerade die bayerischen Lande besonders rühmen dürfen. Zeugnisse dafür sind berühmte Baudenkmäler, majestätische Kathedralen, Skulpturen und Gemälde von hohem künstlerischen Wert, literarische Werke, kulturelle Initiativen und vor allem viele Schicksale Einzelner und von Gemeinschaften, in denen sich die tiefen christlichen Überzeugungen der Generationen widerspiegeln, die in diesem mir so lieben Land aufeinander gefolgt sind. Die Beziehungen Bayerns zum Heiligen Stuhl waren, abgesehen von einigen Momenten der Spannung, stets geprägt von respektvoller Herzlichkeit. In den entscheidenden Stunden seiner Geschichte hat das bayerische Volk immer seine tiefe Ergebenheit gegenüber dem Stuhl Petri und seine Treue zum katholischen Glauben bestätigt. Die Mariensäule, die auf dem zentralen Platz unserer Hauptstadt München steht, ist ein beredtes Zeugnis dafür.

Der heutige gesellschaftliche Kontext ist in vieler Hinsicht verschieden von dem der Vergangenheit. Trotzdem denke ich, daß uns alle die Hoffnung verbindet, die kommenden Generationen mögen dem geistigen Erbe treu bleiben, das durch alle Krisen der Geschichte hindurch standgehalten hat. Mein Besuch in dem Land, in dem ich geboren wurde, möchte in diesem Sinn auch eine Ermutigung sein: Bayern ist ein Teil Deutschlands, der Geschichte Deutschlands in ihrem Auf und Ab zugehörig, und kann mit Recht stolz sein auf die von der Vergangenheit ererbten Traditionen. Mein Wunsch ist es, daß alle meine Landsleute in Bayern und in Deutschland insgesamt sich aktiv an der Weitergabe der grundlegenden Werte des christlichen Glaubens an die Bürger von morgen beteiligen, der uns alle trägt und der nicht abgrenzt, sondern der öffnet und die Menschen aus den verschiedenen Völkern, Kulturen und Religionen zueinander bringt. Ich hätte gerne meinen Besuch auch auf andere Teile Deutschlands ausgedehnt, um zu all den verschiedenen Ortskirchen zu kommen, besonders zu denen, mit denen mich persönliche Erinnerungen verbinden.

Viele Zeichen der Zuneigung habe ich von überall und besonders aus den bayerischen Diözesen während meines Pontifikatsbeginns und all die Jahre hindurch erhalten dürfen. Das stärkt mich Tag um Tag. So möchte ich diese Gelegenheit benützen, um meinen ganz herzlichen Dank gegnüber Euch allen zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Ich habe auch lesen und verfolgen können, was in diesen Wochen und Monaten alles getan worden ist, wie viele Menschen sich mit all ihren Kräften daran beteiligt haben, daß dieser Besuch schön wird. Und jetzt danken wir dem Herrn, daß er uns auch den bayerischen Himmel dazu schenkt, denn den konnten wir nicht bestellen! Vergelt’s Gott also für all das, was geschehen ist von den verschiedensten Seiten – ich werde auch bei anderen Anlässen darauf zurückkommen können –, um einen schönen Ablauf dieses Besuches und dieser Tage zu gewährleisten. Über diesen Gruß an Euch, liebe Landsleute, hinaus – ich sehe vor mir die Stationen meines Weges von Marktl über Tittmoning nach Aschau nach Traunstein nach Regensburg nach München – über diesen Gruß an Euch hinaus möchte ich natürlich meinen Gruß an alle Einwohner Bayerns und ganz Deutschlands richten und denke dabei nicht nur an die katholischen Gläubigen, denen mein Besuch in erster Linie gilt, sondern auch an die Mitglieder der anderen Kirchen und kirchlichen Gemeinschaften, besonders an die evangelischen und die orthodoxen Christen. Und Sie, lieber Herr Bundespräsident, haben mir aus dem Herzen gesprochen: Auch wenn man fünfhundert Jahre nicht einfach bürokratisch oder durch gescheite Gespräche beiseite schieben kann – wir werden uns mit Herz und Verstand darum mühen, daß wir zueinander kommen.

Schließlich grüße ich die Angehörigen anderer Religionen und alle Menschen guten Willens, denen der Friede und die Ruhe des Landes und in der Welt ein Herzensanliegen sind. Möge der Herr die Bemühungen aller segnen, die auf die Schaffung einer Zukunft in echtem Wohlstand und auf der Grundlage der Gerechtigkeit, die den Frieden schafft, ausgerichtet sind. Diese Segenswünsche vertraue ich der Jungfrau Maria an, die in diesem unserem Land als Patrona Bavariae verehrt wird. Ich tue es in der klassischen Formulierung der Fürbitte von Jakob Balde, die zu Füßen der Mariensäule geschrieben steht: Rem regem regimen regionem religionem conserva Bavaris, Virgo Patrona, tuis! – Erhalte, Jungfrau Patronin, Deinen Bayern das Gut, oder wie man im Dialekt sagt „das Sach", die Regierung, das Land und die Religion!

Cari compaesani!

Con viva emozione metto oggi, per la prima volta dopo la mia elevazione alla Cattedra di Pietro, il piede su Terra tedesca-bavarese. Torno nella mia Patria, tra la mia gente, col programma di visitare alcuni luoghi che hanno avuto un'importanza fondamentale nella mia vita. La ringrazio, Signor Presidente della Repubblica, per le espressioni di cordiale benvenuto che mi ha rivolto. In queste parole ho percepito l'eco fedele dei sentimenti dell'intero nostro popolo. Ringrazio la Signora Cancelliere, Dr. Angela Merkel, e il Signor Ministro Presidente, Dr. Edmund Stoiber, per la gentilezza con cui hanno voluto onorare il mio arrivo in terra tedesca e bavarese. Il mio saluto riconoscente si estende inoltre ai membri del Governo, alle Personalità ecclesiastiche, civili e militari qui convenute, come anche a tutti coloro che hanno voluto essere presenti per accogliermi in questa visita per me tanto importante.

In questo momento emergono nel mio animo molti ricordi degli anni passati a Monaco e Ratisbona: sono ricordi di persone e di vicende che hanno lasciato in me una traccia profonda. Consapevole di quanto ho ricevuto, sono qui innanzitutto per esprimere il vivo senso di riconoscenza che provo verso tutti coloro che hanno contribuito a formare la mia personalità nei decenni della mia vita. Ma sono qui anche come Successore dell'apostolo Pietro, per riaffermare e confermare i profondi legami che esistono tra la Sede di Roma e la Chiesa nella nostra Patria.

Sono legami che hanno una storia secolare, alimentata dalla ferma adesione ai valori della fede cristiana, una adesione della quale possono vantarsi in modo particolare proprio le regioni bavaresi. Ne danno testimonianza monumenti famosi, maestose cattedrali, statue e dipinti di grande valore artistico, opere letterarie, iniziative culturali e soprattutto tante vicende di singoli e di comunità nelle quali si rispecchiano le convinzioni cristiane delle generazioni che si sono succedute su questa Terra a me tanto cara. I rapporti della Baviera con la Santa Sede, pur con qualche momento di tensione, sono sempre stati improntati a rispettosa cordialità. Nelle ore decisive della sua storia, poi, il popolo bavarese ha sempre confermato la sua profonda devozione alla Cattedra di Pietro ed il fermo attaccamento alla fede cattolica. La Mariensäule, che s'innalza nella piazza centrale della nostra capitale Monaco, ne è eloquente testimonianza.

Il contesto sociale odierno è sotto molti aspetti diverso da quello del passato. Penso tuttavia che siamo tutti uniti nella speranza che le nuove generazioni restino fedeli al patrimonio spirituale che, attraverso tutte le crisi della storia, ha resistito. La mia visita alla Terra che mi ha dato i natali vuol essere anche un incoraggiamento in questo senso: la Baviera è una parte della Germania, appartenendo alla storia della Germania nei suoi alti e bassi, e può con buona ragione essere fiera delle tradizioni ereditate dal passato. Il mio augurio è che tutti i miei compatrioti nella Baviera e nell'intera Germania si facciano parte attiva nella trasmissione ai cittadini di domani dei valori fondamentali della fede cristiana, che ci sostiene tutti e che non divide, ma apre e avvicina le persone appartenenti a popoli, culture e religioni diverse. Ben volentieri avrei esteso la mia visita anche ad altre parti della Germania, per toccare tutte le varie Chiese locali, in particolare quelle alle quali mi legano personali ricordi. Molti sono stati i segni di affetto che ho ricevuto da tutte le parti e specialmente dalle Diocesi bavaresi in questo inizio di Pontificato e nel corso di tutti questi anni. Ciò mi rafforza di giorno in giorno. Per questo desidero cogliere questa occasione per esprimere a voi tutti la mia profonda gratitudine. Ho anche potuto leggere e seguire quanto è stato fatto in queste settimane e in questi mesi, quante persone hanno contribuito con tutte le loro forze, affinché questa visita sia bella. E ora rendiamo grazie al Signore che ci dona anche il cielo bavarese, perché questo noi non lo potevamo ordinare. Grazie! Che Dio vi ripaghi per tutto quello che è stato fatto dalle più diverse parti – avrò modo di tornarci ancora anche in altre occasioni – per garantire uno svolgimento sereno di questa visita e di questi giorni.

Oltre questo saluto a voi, cari compatrioti – vedo qui davanti a me le tappe del mio cammino, da Marktl e Tittmoning ad Aschau, Traunstein, Regensburg, e München – oltre che a voi desidero naturalmente rivolgere il mio saluto con grande affetto a tutti gli abitanti della Baviera e dell'intera Germania: non penso soltanto ai fedeli cattolici, ai quali la mia visita è in primo luogo diretta, ma anche agli aderenti alle altre Chiese e Comunità ecclesiali, in modo particolare ai cristiani evangelici e ortodossi. Lei, caro signor Presidente della Repubblica, con le sue parole ha interpretato i pensieri del mio cuore: anche se cinquecento anni non si possono semplicemente rimuovere in modo burocratico o per mezzo di discorsi intelligenti, ci impegneremo col cuore e con la ragione a convergere gli uni verso gli altri.

Saluto infine i seguaci di altre religioni e tutte le persone di buona volontà che hanno a cuore la pace e la serenità del Paese e del mondo. Voglia il Signore benedire gli sforzi di tutti in vista dell'edificazione di un futuro di autentico benessere e basato su quella giustizia che crea la pace. Affido questi voti alla Vergine Maria, venerata in questa nostra Terra col titolo di Patrona Bavariae. Lo faccio con le parole classiche di Jakob Balde, iscritte qui ai piedi della Mariensäule: Rem regem regimen regionem religionem conserva Bavaris, Virgo Patrona, tuis! - Conserva ai tuoi Bavaresi, o Vergine Patrona, i beni, o come si dice in dialetto "la roba", l'autorità politica, il Paese, la religione!

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear fellow countrymen!

Today with great emotion I set foot, for the first time since my elevation to the Chair of Peter, on German and Bavarian soil. I return to my homeland and among my own people, in order to visit certain places of fundamental importance in my life. I thank you, Mr President of the Republic, for your cordial words of welcome. In these words I sense a faithful echo of the sentiments of all our people. I thank the Chancellor, Dr Angela Merkel, and the Prime Minister, Dr Edmund Stoiber, for the kindness with which they have honoured my arrival on German and Bavarian soil. I also offer greetings and the expression of my gratitude to the members of Government, the ecclesiastical, civil and military authorities, and all those who are here to welcome me on this visit, which is so meaningful for me.

At this moment, many memories of the years I passed in Munich and Regensburg come back to mind: memories of people and events which have deeply marked my life. Conscious of how much I have received, I have come here above all to express my deep gratitude towards all those who helped shape me as a person over decades of my life. But I also come here as the Successor of the Apostle Peter, to reaffirm and strengthen the deep bonds linking the See of Rome and the Church in our native land.

These bonds have a history going back centuries and constantly nourished by firm adherence to the values of the Christian faith, an adherence in which the region of Bavaria can take particular pride. It is witnessed to by famous monuments, majestic cathedrals, statues and paintings of great artistic value, literary works, cultural initiatives and above all, the many individual and community events which reflect the Christian beliefs of successive generations in this Land which is so dear to me. The relations between Bavaria and the Holy See, notwithstanding some moments of tension, have always been marked by cordial respect. At decisive moments in their history, the Bavarian people have always confirmed their sincere devotion to the See of Peter and their firm attachment to the Catholic faith. The Mariensäule, which stands in the central square of our capital Munich, is an eloquent testimony to that faith. 

Today’s social context is in many ways different from that of the past. Still, I think we are all united in the hope that new generations will remain faithful to the spiritual patrimony which has withstood all the crises of history. My visit to the land of my birth is meant to be an encouragement in this regard: Bavaria is a part of Germany; sharing in the ups and downs of Germany’s history, and has good reason to be proud of the traditions inherited from the past. My hope is that all my compatriots in Bavaria and throughout Germany will play an active part in transmitting to tomorrow’s citizens the fundamental values of the Christian faith, which sustains all and is not a source of division, but rather opens up and brings closer together persons of different peoples, cultures and religions. I would gladly have visited other parts of Germany too, including all the various local Churches, especially those linked to personal memories. I have received many signs of affection from everywhere, and especially from the Dioceses of Bavaria, during this early stage of my Pontificate and over all these years. This is a source of strength to me every day. So I want to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude. I have also been able to read about and to follow what has been done in these weeks and months, and how many people have helped in every way possible to make this a wonderful visit. And now let us thank the Lord who gives us also the Bavarian sky, since this was not something we could have ordered. Thank you! May God repay you for all that has been done by all sorts of people – I will come back to this on other occasions – in order to guarantee the smooth running of this visit and these days.

In addition to this greeting to you, my dear compatriots – I see before me the stages of my visit, from Marktl and Tittmoning to Aschau, Traunstein, Regensburg and Munich – in addition to you I wish naturally to greeting with affection all the people of Bavaria and the whole of Germany. I am thinking here not only of the Catholic faithful, to whom my visit is principally directed, but also of the members of other Churches and Ecclesial Communities, particularly Evangelical and Orthodox Christians. With your words, Mr President of the Republic, you have interpreted the sentiments of my own heart: even if five hundred years cannot simply be eliminated by a bureaucratic move or through intelligent speeches, we will be committed with heart and reason to draw closer one to another.

Finally I greet the followers of other religions and all people of good will who have at heart the peace and freedom of this country and our world. May the Lord bless the efforts of all those concerned to build a future of true well-being, based on that justice which creates peace. I entrust these prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, venerated in this land as the Patrona Bavariae. I do so in the classic prayer of Jakob Balde, written here on the base of the Mariensäule: Rem regem regimen regionem religionem conserva Bavaris, Virgo Patrona, tuis! – Preserve, O Virgin and Patroness, for your Bavarian people, their goods (as they say in dialect, their "stuff"), their government, their land and their religion!

Es ist für mich tief bewegend, wieder auf diesem wunderschönen Platz zu Füßen der Mariensäule zu stehen, an einem Ort – es ist schon gesagt worden –, der für mich zweimal Zeuge entscheidender Wendepunkte in meinem Leben war. Hier haben mich – es wurde erzählt – vor dreißig Jahren die Gläubigen mit großer Herzlichkeit aufgenommen, und ich habe der Muttergottes den Weg anvertraut, den ich nun zu gehen hatte, denn der Sprung vom Professorenstuhl auf den Dienst des Erzbischofs von München und Freising war gewaltig, und nur unter einem solchen Schutz und mit der spürbaren Liebe der Münchner und der Bayern konnte ich es wagen, diesen Dienst in der Nachfolge von Kardinal Döpfner zu übernehmen. Dann war es eben wieder so 1982: Hier habe ich Abschied genommen, und damals war der Erzbischof der Glaubenskonkregation, der spätere Kardinal Hamer, dabei und sagte: Die Münchner sind wie Neapolitaner, sie wollen den Erzbischof anrühren und haben ihn gern. Es hat ihn förmlich verwundert, so viel Herzlichkeit hier in München zu sehen, das bayerische Herz an diesem Ort kennenlernen zu dürfen, an dem ich mich noch einmal der Muttergottes anvertraut habe.

Ich danke Ihnen, verehrter lieber Herr Ministerpräsident, für den freundlichen Willkommensgruß, den Sie im Namen der bayerischen Landesregierung und des bayerischen Volkes an mich gerichtet haben. Ich danke besonders herzlich auch meinem lieben Nachfolger im Amt des Hirten der Erzdiözese München und Freising, Herrn Kardinal Friedrich Wetter, für die herzlichen Worte, mit denen er mich hier begrüßt hat. Ich grüße Frau Bundeskanzlerin, Dr. Angela Merkel, und alle politischen, zivilen und militärischen Persönlichkeiten, die an dieser Begegnung zur Begrüßung und zum Gebet teilnehmen. Einen besonderen Gruß möchte ich an die Priester richten, besonders an diejenigen, mit denen ich als Priester und als Bischof in meinem Heimatbistum München und Freising zusammenarbeiten durfte. Euch alle aber, liebe Landsleute, die Ihr Euch um diesen Platz versammelt habt, möchte ich mit großer Herzlichkeit und Dankbarkeit begrüßen. Ich danke Euch für diesen bayerisch-herzlichen Empfang und danke, wie ich es schon am Flughafen tun durfte, all den vielen, die an der Vorbereitung mitgewirkt haben und jetzt dafür sorgen, daß alles sich in so schöner Weise abspielen kann.

Vielleicht darf ich bei dieser Gelegenheit einen Gedanken wieder aufgreifen, den ich in meinen kurzen Erinnerungen im Zusammenhang meiner Ernennung zum Erzbischof von München und Freising dargestellt hatte. Ich sollte ja Nachfolger des heiligen Korbinian werden und bin es geworden. An der Legende dieses Heiligen hat mich seit meiner Kindheit die Geschichte fasziniert, wonach ein Bär sein Reittier auf seiner Reise über die Alpen zerrissen hat. Korbinian verwies es ihm streng und lud ihm zur Strafe sein Gepäck auf, das er nun bis nach Rom zu schleppen hatte. So mußte der Bär, beladen mit dem Bündel des Heiligen, nach Rom wandern und wurde erst dort von Korbinian freigelassen.

Als ich 1977 vor die schwierige Entscheidung gestellt wurde, die Ernennung zum Erzbischof von München und Freising anzunehmen oder nicht – eine Ernennung, die mich aus meiner gewohnten Tätigkeit als Universitätslehrer herausholte in neue Aufgaben und Verantwortungen – da habe ich sehr nachgedacht, mich dann gerade an diesen Bären erinnert und an die Interpretation, die der heilige Augustinus von den Versen 22 und 23 des Psalmes 72 [73] in seiner ganz ähnlichen Situation bei seiner Priester- und Bischofsweihe entwickelt und später in seinen Psalmenpredigten niedergelegt hat. In diesem Psalm fragt sich der Psalmist, warum es den schlechten Menschen dieser Welt oft so gut geht und warum es so vielen guten Menschen in der Welt so schlecht geht. Dann sagt der Psalmist: Ich war dumm, wie ich nachdachte, ich war wie ein Stück Vieh vor dir, aber dann bin ich in den Tempel hineingegangen und habe gewußt, daß ich gerade in meinen Nöten ganz nah bei dir bin und daß du immer mit mir bist. Augustinus hat diesen Psalm mit Liebe immer wieder aufgenommen und hat in diesem Wort: „Ich war wie ein Vieh vor dir" (iumentum im Lateinischen) die Bezeichnung für die Zugtiere gesehen, die damals in der Landwirtschaft in Nordafrika üblich waren, und er hat sich selbst in dieser Bezeichnung „iumentum" als Lasttier Gottes wiedererkannt, sich selbst darin gesehen als einen, der unter der Last seines Auftrages der „sarcina episcopalis" steht. Er hatte von sich aus das Leben eines Gelehrten gewählt und war, wie er dann sagt, von Gott zum „Zugtier" Gottes bestimmt worden – zum braven Ochsen, der den Pflug im Acker Gottes zieht, die schwere Arbeit tut, die ihm aufgetragen wird. Doch dann erkannte er: Wie das Zugtier ganz nahe bei dem Bauern ist, unter dessen Führung es arbeitet, so bin ich ganz nahe bei Gott, denn so diene ich ihm unmittelbar für das Errichten seines Reiches, für das Bauen der Kirche.

Auf dem Hintergrund der Gedanken des Bischofs von Hippo ermutigt mich der Bär immer neu, meinen Dienst mit Freude und Zuversicht zu tun – vor dreißig Jahren wie auch nun in meiner neuen Aufgabe – und Tag für Tag mein Ja zu Gott zu sagen: Ein Lasttier bin ich für dich geworden, doch gerade so bin ich „immer bei dir" (Ps 72 [73], 23). Der Bär des heiligen Korbinian wurde in Rom freigelassen. In meinem Fall hat der Herr anders entschieden. Und so stehe ich also wieder zu Füßen der Mariensäule, um die Fürsprache und den Segen der Muttergottes zu erflehen, nicht nur für die Stadt München und auch nicht nur für das liebe Bayernland, sondern für die Kirche der ganzen Welt und für alle Menschen guten Willens.

Cari Fratelli nell'Episcopato e nel Sacerdozio,
Illustri Signori, gentili Signore,
Cari fratelli e sorelle!

È per me motivo di particolare emozione trovarmi di nuovo in questa bellissima piazza ai piedi della Mariensäule – un luogo, come è stato detto, che già altre due volte è stato testimone di svolte decisive nella mia vita. Qui, come si è detto, trent’anni fa, i fedeli mi accolsero con grande cordialità, ed io affidai alla Madonna il cammino che avrei dovuto percorrere, poiché il passaggio dalla cattedra universitaria al servizio di Arcivescovo di Monaco e Frisinga era un salto enorme, e soltanto con una tale protezione e con l’amore percettibile degli abitanti di Monaco e della Baviera potevo osare di assumere quel ministero succedendo al Cardinale Döpfner. Poi, di nuovo, nel 1982: Qui mi sono congedato; e allora c’era presente l’Arcivescovo della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, Hamer, successivamente Cardinale, ed egli disse: "Gli abitanti di Monaco sono come i napoletani, vogliono toccare l’Arcivescovo e gli vogliono bene". Si è proprio meravigliato di vedere qui a Monaco tanta cordialità, di poter conoscere il cuore bavarese in questo luogo, in cui io, ancora una volta, mi sono affidato alla Madonna.

La ringrazio, illustre e caro Signor Ministro Presidente, per il cordiale indirizzo di benvenuto che mi ha rivolto in nome del Governo e del popolo bavarese. Ringrazio di tutto cuore anche il mio caro successore come Pastore dell'Arcidiocesi di München-Freising, il Signor Cardinale Friedrich Wetter, per le parole calorose con cui qui mi ha salutato. Saluto la Signora Cancelliere, Dr. Angela Merkel, e tutte le Personalità politiche, civili e militari che hanno voluto partecipare a questo incontro di benvenuto e di preghiera. Un particolare saluto desidero riservare ai sacerdoti, specialmente a coloro con cui, come sacerdote e come Vescovo, ho potuto collaborare nella mia Diocesi d'origine, München-Freising. Ma tutti voi, cari compatrioti convenuti in questa piazza, vorrei salutare con grande cordialità e gratitudine. Vi ringrazio per la vostra calorosa accoglienza bavarese, e ringrazio, come ho già fatto all’aeroporto, tutti coloro che hanno collaborato alla preparazione della visita e ora si adoperano affinché tutto possa svolgersi così bene.

Forse mi permettete di tornare in questa occasione su un pensiero che, nelle mie brevi memorie, ho sviluppato nel contesto della mia nomina ad Arcivescovo di Monaco e Frisinga. Dovevo divenire successore di san Corbiniano e lo sono diventato. Della sua leggenda mi ha affascinato fin dalla mia infanzia la storia, secondo la quale un orso avrebbe sbranato l’animale da sella del santo, durante il suo viaggio sulle Alpi. Corbiniano lo rimproverò duramente e, come punizione, gli mise sul dorso tutto il suo bagaglio affinché lo portasse fino a Roma. Così l'orso, caricato col fardello del santo, dovette camminare fino a Roma, e solo lì da Corbiniano fu lasciato libero di andarsene.

Quando, nel 1977, mi trovai davanti alla difficile scelta di accettare o no la nomina ad Arcivescovo di Monaco e Frisinga che mi avrebbe strappato alla mia consueta attività universitaria portandomi verso nuovi compiti e nuove responsabilità, riflettei molto. E proprio allora mi ricordai di questo orso e dell’interpretazione dei versetti 22 e 23 del Salmo 72 [73] che sant'Agostino, in una situazione molto simile alla mia nel contesto della sua ordinazione sacerdotale ed episcopale ha sviluppato e, in seguito, espresso nei suoi sermoni sui Salmi. In questo Salmo, il salmista si chiede perché spesso ai malvagi di questo mondo le cose vanno tanto bene e perché, invece, a molte persone buone le cose vanno così male. E allora il Salmista dice: ero stolto per come la pensavo; davanti a te stavo come una bestia, ma poi sono entrato nel santuario e ho compreso che proprio nelle mie difficoltà ero molto vicino a te e che tu eri sempre con me. Agostino, con amore, ha ripreso spesso questo Salmo e, vedendo nell’espressione "davanti a te stavo come una bestia" (iumentum in latino) un riferimento all'animale da tiro che allora veniva usato in Nordafrica per lavorare la terra, ha riconosciuto in questo "iumentum" se stesso come bestia da tiro di Dio, vi si è visto come uno che sta sotto il peso del suo incarico, la "sarcina episcopalis". Aveva scelto la vita dell'uomo di studio e, come dice in seguito, Dio lo aveva chiamato a fare "l'animale da tiro", il bravo bue che tira l'aratro nel campo di Dio, che fa il lavoro pesante, che gli viene assegnato. Ma poi riconosce: come l’animale da tiro è molto vicino al contadino, sotto la cui guida lavora, così io sono vicinissimo a Dio, perché così lo servo direttamente per l’edificazione del suo Regno, per la costruzione della Chiesa.

Sullo sfondo di questo pensiero del Vescovo di Ippona, l'orso di san Corbiniano mi incoraggia sempre di nuovo a compiere il mio servizio con gioia e fiducia – trent'anni fa come anche adesso nel mio nuovo incarico – dicendo giorno per giorno il mio "sì" a Dio: Sono divenuto per te come una bestia da soma, ma proprio così "io sono con te sempre" (Sal 72[73], 23). L'orso di san Corbiniano, a Roma, fu lasciato libero. Nel mio caso, il "Padrone" ha deciso diversamente. Mi trovo, dunque, di nuovo ai piedi della Mariensäule per implorare l'intercessione e la benedizione della Madre di Dio, non solo per la città di Monaco e per l’amata Baviera, ma per la Chiesa universale e per tutti gli uomini di buona volontà.

My Brother Cardinals, Bishops and Priests,
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Brothers and Sisters!

It is very moving for me to stand once more in this beautiful square at the foot of the Mariensäule – in a place which, as was already pointed out, has witnessed two other decisive turning-points in my life. Here, as it was said, thirty years ago the faithful gave me a very warm welcome, and I entrusted to the Virgin Mary the path that lay ahead of me, since the move from a university chair to the ministry of Archbishop of Munich and Freising was a big step, and only with such protection and the palpable affection of the people of Munich and Bavaria could I hope to take up that ministry as the successor of Cardinal Döpfner. Then, again in 1982, I bade farewell here. Archbishop, later Cardinal, Hamer, the Archbishop of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was present, and he remarked: "The people of Munich are like the people of Naples: they want to touch their Archbishop and they love him". He was amazed to see such warmth here in Munich, and to encounter the Bavarian heart in this place, where once more I entrusted myself to the Virgin.

I thank your, distinguished and dear Mr Minister President, for your cordial words of welcome in the name of the Bavarian government and people. I also offer a heartfelt thanks to my dear successor as Pastor of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, Cardinal Friedrich Wetter, for his warm words of greeting. I greet Madam Chancellor, Dr Angela Merkel, and all the political, civil and military authorities taking part in this ceremony of welcome and prayer. I would like to offer a special greeting to the priests, especially those with whom I was able to work in my home Diocese of Munich and Freising. But I wish to greet all of you, my dear compatriots assembled in this square, with great heartfelt gratitude and affection. I thank you for your warm Bavarian welcome, and I thank, as I have already done at the airport, all those who helped to prepare this visit are now working so that everything will go so smoothly.

I hope you will allow me to recall on this occasion a few thoughts which I set down in my brief memoirs with regard to my appointment as Archbishop of Munich and Freising. I was to become, and did become, the successor of Saint Corbinian. From my childhood I was very much taken with the story that a bear had attacked and killed the horse on the saint was riding across the Alps. Corbinian severely scolded the bear and he punished him by loading him down with all his baggage and making him carry it all the way to Rome. So the bear, carrying the baggage of the saint, had to go to Rome, and only there was he allowed by the saint to go free.

In 1977, when I had to face the difficult choice of whether or not to accept my appointment as Archbishop of Munich and Freising, knowing that it would take me away from my usual work at the university and mean new work and new responsibilities, I had to do a lot of reflecting. And precisely then I remembered this bear and the interpretation of verses 22 and 23 of Psalm 73 that Saint Augustine, in a situation much like my own and in the context of his own priestly and episcopal ordination, had come up with and later set down in his sermons on the Psalms. In Psalm 73, the Psalmist asks why in this world good things often happen to bad people, while bad things happen to many good people. And he goes on to say: "I was foolish in my thinking, I stood in your presence like a dumb beast. But then I entered the sanctuary and I understood how even amid my troubles I was close to you and that you were always with me". Augustine loved this Psalm and often made reference to it, seeing in the words "I stood in your presence like a dumb beast" (in Latin, iumentum) a reference to the beasts of burden used in North Africa to work the land. In this iumentum he saw an image of himself as a beast of burden for God, someone burdened by his responsibility, the sarcina episcopalis. He had chosen the life of a scholar and God had called him to become a "beast of burden", a sturdy ox drawing the plough in God’s field, doing the heavy labour assigned to him. But he came to realize: just as the beast of burden is very close to the farmer, working under his direction, so I am very close to God, because thus I serve him directly for the building up of his Kingdom, the the building up of his Church.

With these words of the Bishop of Hippo in mind, I have found in Saint Corbinian’s bear a constant encouragement to carry out my ministry with confidence and joy – thirty years ago, and again now in my new task – and to say my daily "yes" to God: I have become for you a beast of burden, but as such "I am always with you" (Ps 73:23). Saint Corbinian’s bear was set free in Rome. In my case, the Lord decided otherwise. And so I find myself once more at the foot of the Mariensäule, imploring the intercession and blessing of the Mother of God, not only for the city of Munich and for my beloved Bavaria, but for the universal Church and for all people of good will.

unsere Vorfahren haben in bedrängter Zeit dein Bild hier im Herzen der Stadt München aufgestellt, um dir Stadt und Land anzuvertrauen. Dir wollten sie auf den Wegen des Alltags immer wieder begegnen und von dir das rechte Menschsein lernen; von dir lernen, wie wir Gott finden und wie wir so zueinander kommen können. Sie haben dir Krone und Zepter, die damaligen Symbole der Herrschaft über das Land gegeben, weil sie wußten, daß dann die Macht und die Herrschaft in den rechten Händen sind – in den Händen der Mutter.

Dein Sohn hat seinen Jüngern kurz vor der Stunde des Abschieds gesagt: Wer unter euch groß sein will, der sei euer Bediener, und wer unter euch der erste sein möchte, der sei aller Knecht (Mk 10, 43f). Du hast in der entscheidenden Stunde deines Lebens gesagt: Siehe, ich bin die Magd des Herrn (Lk 1, 38) und hast dein ganzes Leben als Dienst gelebt. Du tust es weiter die Jahrhunderte der Geschichte hindurch: Wie du einst für die Brautleute in Kana leise und diskret eingetreten bist, so tust du es immer: Alle Sorgen der Menschen nimmst du auf dich und trägst sie vor den Herrn, vor deinen Sohn. Deine Macht ist die Güte. Deine Macht ist das Dienen. Lehre uns, die Großen und die Kleinen, die Herrschenden und die Dienenden, auf solche Weise unsere Verantwortung zu leben. Hilf uns, die Kraft des Versöhnens und das Vergeben zu finden. Hilf uns, geduldig und demütig zu werden, aber auch frei und mutig, wie du es in der Stunde des Kreuzes gewesen bist. Du trägst Jesus auf deinen Armen, das segnende Kind, das doch der Herr der Welt ist. So bist du, den Segnenden tragend, selbst zum Segen geworden. Segne uns und diese Stadt und dieses Land. Zeige uns Jesus, die gebenedeite Frucht deines Leibes. Bitte für uns Sünder, jetzt und in der Stunde unseres Todes. Amen.

Il tuo Figlio, poco prima dell'ora del congedo, ha detto ai suoi discepoli: "Chi vuol essere grande tra voi si farà vostro servitore, e chi vuol essere il primo tra voi sarà il servo di tutti" (Mc 10,43s). Tu, nell'ora decisiva della tua vita hai detto: "Eccomi, sono la serva del Signore" (Lc 1,38) e hai vissuto tutta la tua esistenza come servizio. Questo Tu continui a fare lungo i secoli della storia. Come una volta, a Cana, intercedesti silenziosamente e con discrezione per gli sposi, così fai sempre: Ti carichi di tutte le preoccupazioni degli uomini e le porti davanti al Signore, davanti al Figlio tuo. Il tuo potere è la bontà. Il tuo potere è il servire.

Insegna a noi – grandi e piccoli, dominatori e servitori – a vivere in questo modo la nostra responsabilità. Aiutaci a trovare la forza per la riconciliazione e per il perdono. Aiutaci a diventare pazienti ed umili, ma anche liberi e coraggiosi, come lo sei stata Tu nell'ora della Croce. Tu porti sulle tue braccia Gesù, il Bambino che benedice, il Bambino che pur è il Signore del mondo. In questo modo, portando Colui che benedice, sei diventata Tu stessa una benedizione. Benedici noi, questa città e questo Paese! Mostraci Gesù, il frutto benedetto del tuo seno! Prega per noi peccatori, adesso e nell'ora della nostra morte. Amen!

Holy Mother of the Lord!

Our ancestors, at a time of trouble, set up your statue here, in the very heart of Munich, and entrusted the city and country to your care. They wanted to meet you again and again along the paths of their daily life, and to learn from you the right way to live, to find God and to live in harmony. They gave you a crown and a sceptre, which at that time were symbols of dominion over the country, because they knew that power and dominion would then be in good hands - in the hands of a Mother. 

Your Son, just before his farewell to his disciples, said to them: "Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all" (Mk 10:43-44). At the decisive hour in your own life, you said: "Here I am, the servant of the Lord" (Lk 1:38). You lived your whole life as service. And you continue to do so throughout history. At Cana, you silently and discreetly interceded for the spouses, and so you continue to do. You take upon yourself people’s needs and concerns, and you bring them before the Lord, before your Son. Your power is goodness. Your power is service. 

Teach us - great and small alike - to carry out our responsibilities in the same way. Help us to find the strength to offer reconciliation and forgiveness. Help us to become patient and humble, but also free and courageous, just as you were at the hour of the Cross. In your arms you hold Jesus, the Child who blesses, the Child who is also the Lord of the world. By holding the Child who blesses, you have yourself become a blessing. Bless us, this city and this country! Show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb! Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen!
