Nella serata di ieri, il Direttore della Sala Stampa della Santa Sede, Dr. Joaquín Navarro-Valls, ha rilasciato ai giornalisti la seguente dichiarazione:

Il Cardinale Segretario di Stato, Angelo Sodano, ha scritto, a nome del Santo Padre Benedetto XVI, una lettera al Presidente dell’Afganistan, Hamid Kazai, riguardante la sorte del convertito al cristianesimo Abdul Rahman, che rischia la pena capitale.

Nella lettera, che porta la data del 22 marzo, è detto che l’appello del Papa è ispirato da "profound human compassion" e da "firm belief in the dignity of human life and by respect for every person’s freedom of conscience and religion".

Scrive ancora il Card. Angelo Sodano "I am certain, Mr President, that dropping the case against Mr Rahman would bestow great honour upon the Afgan People and would raise a chorus of admiration in the international community. It would then contribute in a most significant way to our common mission to foster mutual understanding and respect among the world’s different religions and cultures".
