"The Media: A Network for Communication, Communion and Cooperation" is the theme chosen by Pope Benedict XVI for the XL World Communications Day 2006.
"This first theme chosen by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, for a World Communications Day", said Archbishop John P. Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, the department of the Holy See which prepares study materials and liturgical aids on the theme for distribution to bishops' conferences around the world, "underlines his own appreciation of the ability of the communications media not only to make known needed information but also to promote fruitful cooperation."
World Communications Day, the only worldwide celebration called for by the Second Vatican Council ("Inter Mirifica", 1963), is marked in most countries, on the recommendation of the bishops of the world, on the Sunday before Pentecost (in 2006, May 28).
The announcement of the theme is customarily made on September 29, the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Raphael and Gabriel, who has been designated as the patron of those who work in radio.
The Holy Father's message for World Communications Day is traditionally published in conjunction with the Memorial of St. Francis de Sales, patron of writers (January 24), to allow bishops' conferences, diocesan offices and communications organizations sufficient time to prepare audiovisual and other materials for national and local celebrations.

"I Media: rete di comunicazione, comunione e cooperazione" è il tema scelto da Papa Benedetto XVI per la 40ª Giornata Mondiale delle Comunicazioni Sociali 2006.
"Questo primo tema voluto dal Santo Padre Benedetto XVI - ha affermato l'Arcivescovo John P. Foley, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio delle Comunicazioni Sociali, il Dicastero della Santa Sede che prepara il materiale di studio e liturgico sul tema, destinato alle Conferenze episcopali di tutto il mondo - indica il suo apprezzamento per la capacità dei mass media non solo di far conoscere le informazioni necessarie, ma anche di promuovere una fruttuosa cooperazione".
La Giornata delle Comunicazioni Sociali, l'unica celebrazione mondiale stabilita dal Concilio Vaticano II ("Inter mirifica", 1963), è fissata nella maggior parte dei Paesi, su raccomandazione dei Vescovi del mondo, la domenica prima di Pentecoste (nel 2006, il 28 maggio).
L'annuncio del tema è dato, di consuetudine, il 29 settembre, festa degli Arcangeli Michele, Raffaele e Gabriele, il quale è stato designato Patrono di coloro che lavorano nella radio.
II Messaggio del Santo Padre per la Giornata Mondiale delle Comunicazioni Sociali è pubblicato, tradizionalmente, in concomitanza con la memoria di San Francesco di Sales, Patrono dei giornalisti (24 gennaio), per lasciare alle Conferenze episcopali, agli Uffici diocesani e alle Organizzazioni che si occupano di comunicazione sociale il tempo sufficiente per preparare sussidi audiovisivi e altro materiale per celebrazioni a livello nazionale e locale.
