COMUNICATO DELLA MISSIONE DI OSSERVAZIONE PERMANENTE DELLA SANTA SEDE PRESSO L’ORGANIZZAZIONE DELLE NAZIONI UNITE

● PREPARATORY MEETING ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SIDE-EVENT

On Thursday, 3 March 2005, from 1:15pm to 2:45pm, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations and its co-sponsors, AVSI (Association of Volunteers in International Service, USA, Inc.), New Humanity, and Pax Romana, will host a side-event on socio-ethical thought on economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The first phase of the event will take place at the United Nations Headquarters. The Presentation will be given by the Most Rev. Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, and former Permanent Observer at the UN Office in Geneva. The Moderator for the event is Mr. Oscar R. de Rojas, Executive Coordinator, Financing for Development Secretariat DESA.

The second phase of the side-event will continue from 3pm to 5:30pm in the auditorium at the Church of the Holy Family located at 315 East 47 Street. Speakers include: Mr. Chris Bacich, who will represent AVSI and focus on the importance of quality education for sustainable development; New Humanity representative, Prof. Amelia J. Uelmen, Director of the Institute on Religion and Law at Fordham University School of Law, who will speak on "Brotherhood as a Political Category", Dr. Joe Holland, President of Pax Romana/Catholic Movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs USA, and Executive Director of Pax Romana Center for International Study of Catholic SocialTeaching at St. Thomas University, Florida, who will make a presentation on "Ecology and Human Life - Two Interrelated themes in Postmodern Catholic Social Thought." The Moderator of the event is Prof. Dr. Mark J. Wolff, professor at St. Thomas University School of Law, Florida.
