Alle 10 di questa mattina, lasciato il Seminario Archidiocesano di Rijeka, il Papa si trasferisce in aereo a Zadar. Dall’aeroporto, dove è accolto dall’Arcivescovo della Diocesi di Zadar, S.E. Mons. Ivan Prendja, e dalle Autorità politiche e civili, il Santo Padre si reca al Forum di Zadar per la celebrazione della Parola nella festività croata della Beata Vergine Maria Madre della Chiesa. Qui, introdotto dall’indirizzo di omaggio di S.E. Mons. Ivan Prendja, Giovanni Paolo II pronuncia l’omelia che riportiamo di seguito:

1. S radošću se na završetku ovoga mojeg apostolskog putovanja susrećem s vama, predragi vjernici Zadarske nadbiskupije i susjednih područja, koji ste došli na ovaj Forum u sjeni stolnice svete Anastazije, srijemske mučenice. Okupili smo se ovdje na molitvu Šestoga časa.

S ljubavlju vas pozdravljam u imenu Gospodnjemu, sjećajući se nazočnosti u ovome vašem gradu mojega predhodnika pape Aleksandra III., koji se je u ožujku 1177. zaustavio ovdje, pohodivši i neka druga ne daleka mjesta. Pozdravljam vašega nadbiskupa Ivana Prenđu, koji me je dočekao u ime svih vas, i nadbiskupa u miru Marijana Oblaka, koji je sa mnom sudjelovao u Drugome vatikanskom općem saboru. Bratski pozdravljam i ostale hrvatske biskupe, koji su se danas okupili oko mene i koji su me pratili za vrijeme ovoga apostolskog putovanja. Srda…no npozdravljam gospodu kardinale: Sodana, Vlka i Puljiƒa. Pozdravljam isto tako i srpsko-pravoslavnoga biskupa Dalmacije Fotija.

S poštovanjem pozdravljam također gospodina predsjednika Republike, kojemu zahvaljujem za nazočnost na ovome susretu, te druge građanske i vojne vlasti, kojima sam zahvalan za sve što su učinili za ostvarenje mojega pohoda.

2. Naš se bogoslužni skup održava u ponedjeljak po svetkovini Duhova, na dan u koji slavite blagdan Marije, Majke Crkve. Ulomak čitanja, što smo ga upravo čuli, govori o Marijinoj nazočnosti u dvorani Posljednje večere, gdje je okružena prvotnom kršćanskom zajednicom. Mala skupina, sabrana u gornjoj sobi kuće (Dj 1, 13), moli i čeka. Kada pak dođe Duh Sveti, tada će se otvoriti vrata dvorane Posljednje večere kako bi se evanđeoskomu navještaju omogućilo da iziđe na jeruzalemske trgove i odatle krene putovima svijeta.

Djevica je i kroz stoljeća, upravo kao što je bila na dan Pedesetnice, nastavila biti duhovno nazočna s vjernicima i s njima zajedno moliti za neprestani izljev darova Duha na Crkvu, koja se suočava s izazovima što se javljaju u raznim povijestnim razdobljima.

Marija tako u potpunosti ostvaruje svoje majčinsko poslanje. Ona, naime, nije majka samo zato što je na svijet dala i što je hranila Sina Božjega. Ona je majka i zato jer je »Djevica, koja je postala Crkva«, kako ju je volio pozdravljati Franjo Asiški (usp. Franjevačka vrela, 259), koji je – prema predaji – kroz Zadar prošao početkom XIII. stoljeća, za vrijeme svojega puta na Istok i u Svetu Zemlju.

3. Okupivši oko sebe apostole i učenike, koji su bili izvrgnuti kušnji da pođu svojim putem, Djevica Marija ih je sve predala »ognju« Duha, koji će ih uputiti u pustolovinu poslanja. »Osjećaj vjere« kršćanskoga puka prepoznavat će učinkovitu nazočnost Marije ne samo u prvotnoj kršćanskoj zajednici, nego i u kasnijim događajima u Crkvi, i ne će se zbog toga ustručavati nazvati je kraljicom apostola.

Presveta Djevica, koja – prema pisanju evanđelista Luke – »pohranjivaše u sebi sve one događaje i prebiraše ih u svome srcu« (Lk 2, 19), nastavlja uvijek iznova pred oči vjernikâ stavljati povijestne događaje, koji su sastavni dio njihove vjere. Marija, kao svjedok početaka i jamac vjernosti kršćanskih naraštanja, u svako doba ponavlja riječi, što ih je izgovorila na svadbi u Kani: »Što god vam rekne, učinite!« (Iv 2, 5).

4. Marijine su riječi i njezin primjer uzvišena škola života u kojoj se školuju apostoli, kako oni jučer, tako isto i ovi danas. Marija ih neprestano pripravlja za poslanje svojom ustrajnom molitvom Ocu, svojom odanošću Sinu, svojim spremnim prihvaćanjem poticaja Duha.

Raduje me spoznaja da je ova nadbiskupija prošlih godina doživjela procvat i višestruki rast raznovrsnih oblika zalaganja i apostolske djelatnosti vjernikâ svjetovnjakâ. Od Marije, draga braćo i sestre, naučite biti vjerodostojni svjedoci i velikodušni apostoli, pružajući svoj doprinos velikome djelu nove evangelizacije. I uvijek imajte na umu da pravi apostolat kao preduvjet traži osobni susret s Isusom, Živim, Gospodinom (usp. Otk 1, 17-18).

5. Presveta Djevica ostaje uzor svima, koji slušaju riječ Božju i opslužuju je (usp. Lk 8, 21). Kako onda ne bi mogao postojati duboki duhovni sklada između vjernika i Djevice koja izgovara svoj Veliča ? Siromašni i ponizni iz svakoga vremena nisu pogriješili kada su Mariju, koja šuti, odabrali za svoju glasnogovornicu, i Mariju, koja služi, za svoju kraljicu.

I mi također pristupamo k Njoj, kako bi od Nje naučili poslušnost i otvorenost Bogu. I mi se, hodočasnici trećega tisućljeća, također preporučamo njezinu zagovoru, kako bi Ona svojom molitvom poduprla našu vjeru, hranila našu nadu i učinila djelotvornom našu ljubav:

Sveta Marijo, Majko Božja i Majko naša,

sjeti se svih svojih sinova i kćeri,

i priteci nam u pomoć.

Vodi nas na susret s Kristom, koji je Put, Istina i Život.

Isprosi nam od Oca darove Duha Svetoga,

zaštitu od zamki i izbavljenje od zla.

Pomozi nam da u svakoj prilici svjedočimo

o rodnosti ljubavi i istinskome smislu života.

Nauči nas s Tobom zajedno graditi kraljevstvo Tvoga Sina,

Kraljevstvo pravde, ljubavi i mira.

1. As my Apostolic Journey to Croatia draws to an end, I am happy to join you, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Zadar and neighbouring areas, here in Forum Square, in the shadow of the Cathedral of Saint Anastasia, the martyr from Sirmio. We are gathered here to celebrate Midday Prayer, the hour of Sext.

I greet you with affection in the name of the Lord, as I recall the presence of my predecessor, Pope Alexander III, who stopped in this city in March 1177 and visited several places in the vicinity. I greet your Archbishop, the Most Reverend Ivan Prendja, who has welcomed me in the name of all present, and Archbishop Emeritus Marijan Oblak, who took part with me in the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. With fraternal affection I greet the Bishops of Croatia, who surround me today and have accompanied me throughout this Pastoral Visit. My greetings also go to the Serbian Orthdox Bishop of Dalmatia Fotije.

Lastly, I greet with respect the President of the Republic, whom I thank most heartily for being present at this gathering, and the other civil and military authorities, to whom I express my gratitude for everything that they have done to make my visit possible.

2. Our liturgical assembly takes place on the day after the Solemnity of Pentecost, the day on which Croatians celebrate the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church. The reading we have just heard portrays Mary in the Cenacle, surrounded by the early community. The small group, gathered in "the upper room" of the house (Acts 1:13), prays and waits. With the coming of the Holy Spirit the doors of the room will burst open and enable the Gospel proclamation to go out to the streets of Jerusalem, and then to set forth on the paths of the world.

As on the day of Pentecost, the Blessed Virgin has remained spiritually in the midst of the Christian faithful down the centuries, invoking the constant outpouring of the Spirit’s gifts upon the Church as she faces the challenges which arise in different periods of her history.

In this way Mary carries out in its fullness her mission as Mother: she is Mother not only because she gave birth to and nurtured the Son of God; she is also Mother because she is "the Virgin who has become the Church," as Saint Francis of Assisi loved to call her (cf. Fontes Francescani, 259). Francis too passed through Zadar at the beginning of the thirteenth century, during his journey to the East and the Holy Land.

3. The Virgin Mary, gathering around herself the Apostles and the disciples who were tempted to disperse, commended them to the "fire" of the Spirit who would launch them on the adventure of mission. The "sensus fidei" of the Christian People would recognize Mary’s active presence not only in the earliest community, but also throughout the Church’s history. For this reason the Church has not hesitated to grant her the title of "Queen of the Apostles."

The Most Holy Virgin, who, in the words of the Evangelist Luke, "kept all these things, pondering them in her heart" (2:19), continues to set before the memory of believers the historical events which are the foundation of their faith. As a witness to the origins of the Church and the guarantor of the fidelity of Christians in every generation, Mary repeats in every age the words she spoke at the wedding feast of Cana: "Do whatever he tells you" (Jn 2:5).

4. Mary’s words and example represent a sublime school of life, at which apostles are formed. Apostles in the past and apostles today. Mary continues to prepare them for mission by her assiduous prayer to the Father, by her closeness to her Son, and by her openness to the promptings of the Spirit.

It pleases me to know that this Archdiocese has witnessed in recent years the growth and expansion of different forms of lay engagement and apostolate. Dear brothers and sisters, learn from Mary how to be credible witnesses and generous apostles, as you make your own contribution to the great enterprise of the new evangelization. And never forget that a genuine apostolate demands as a prior condition a personal encounter with Jesus, the Living One, the Lord (cf. Rev 1:17-18).

5. Mary Most Holy remains a model for all who hear the word of God and put it into practice (cf. Lk 8:21). How then could there not be a profound spiritual understanding between all believers and the Virgin of the Magnificat? The poor and the humble in every age were not mistaken when they made Mary in silence their Advocate and Mary in service their Queen.

Let us too draw near to her and learn to imitate her docility and openness to God. Let us too, the pilgrims of the third millennium, commend ourselves to her intercession, so that by her prayers she may sustain our faith, nourish our hope and make fruitful our charity:

Holy Mary, Mother of God and our own Mother,

look upon all your children

and come to our aid.

Guide us to Christ, the Way, and the Truth, and the Life;

from the Father implore for us the gifts of the Spirit,

protection from every snare, and freedom from all evil.

Help us ever to bear witness

to the fruitfulness of love and the authentic meaning of life;

teach us to build with you the Kingdom of your Son

the Kingdom of justice, love and peace.

1. Con gioia, al termine del mio viaggio apostolico in Croazia, mi incontro con voi, carissimi fedeli dell'Arcidiocesi di Zadar e delle regioni vicine, convenuti in questa piazza del Forum all’ombra della Cattedrale di Sant’Anastasia, martire di Sirmio. Siamo qui raccolti per celebrare insieme la preghiera dell’Ora Sesta.

Vi saluto con affetto nel nome del Signore, nel ricordo della presenza in questa vostra città del mio Predecessore, Papa Alessandro III, che nel marzo 1177 qui sostò visitando anche alcune località vicine. Saluto il vostro Arcivescovo, Mons. Ivan Prendja, che a nome di tutti mi ha accolto, e l’Arcivescovo emerito, Mons. Marijan Oblak, che ha partecipato con me al Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II. Rivolgo un pensiero fraterno ai Vescovi croati, che oggi mi circondano e mi hanno accompagnato durante questo viaggio apostolico. Saluto cordialmente i Signori Cardinali Sodano, Vlk e Pulijƒ. Il mio saluto si estende anche al Vescovo serbo-ortodosso di Dalmazia Fotije.

Saluto, infine, con deferenza il Signor Presidente della Repubblica, che ringrazio vivamente per la presenza a questo incontro, e le altre Autorità civili e militari, alle quali va la mia gratitudine per quanto hanno fatto per la realizzazione della mia visita.

2. La nostra assemblea liturgica si tiene all’indomani della solennità di Pentecoste, nel giorno in cui celebrate la festa di Maria, Madre della Chiesa. La lettura che è stata appena proclamata la presenta nel Cenacolo, attorniata dalla comunità primitiva. Il piccolo gruppo, raccolto "al piano superiore" della casa (At 1,13), prega ed attende. Verrà lo Spirito Santo e allora si spalancheranno le porte del Cenacolo per consentire all'annuncio evangelico di uscire sulla piazza di Gerusalemme, e di avviarsi poi sulle strade del mondo.

Come nel giorno della Pentecoste, la Vergine ha continuato a restare spiritualmente in mezzo ai fedeli nel corso dei secoli, per invocare la costante effusione dei doni dello Spirito sulla Chiesa alle prese con le sfide emergenti nelle diverse epoche della storia.

Maria realizza così in pienezza la sua missione materna: non è madre solo perché ha dato alla luce ed ha nutrito il Figlio di Dio; è madre anche perché è "la Vergine fatta Chiesa", come amava salutarla Francesco d’Assisi (cfr FF 259), passato secondo la tradizione da Zadar agli inizi del XIIIE secolo, durante il suo viaggio verso l’Oriente e la Terra Santa.

3. La Vergine Maria, raccogliendo attorno a sé gli Apostoli e i discepoli tentati di dispersione, li consegna al ‘fuoco’ dello Spirito che li lancerà nell’avventura della missione. Il "sensus fidei" del popolo cristiano riconoscerà l'attiva presenza di Maria non solo nella comunità degli inizi, ma anche nelle successive vicende della Chiesa. Per questo non esiterà a tributarle il titolo di "Regina degli Apostoli".

La Vergine Santissima, che secondo l'evangelista Luca "serbava tutte queste cose meditandole nel suo cuore" (2,19), continua a riproporre alla memoria dei credenti gli eventi storici che ne fondano la fede. Testimone delle origini, garante della fedeltà delle generazioni cristiane, Maria ripete in ogni tempo le parole pronunciate alle nozze di Cana: "Fate quello che vi dirà" (Gv 2, 5).

4. Le parole e l'esempio di Maria costituiscono una sublime scuola di vita, alla quale si formano gli apostoli. Quelli di ieri e quelli di oggi. Maria li prepara continuamente alla missione con l’assiduità della sua preghiera al Padre, con l'attaccamento al Figlio, con la sua disponibilità ai suggerimenti dello Spirito.

Mi rallegro nell’apprendere che questa Arcidiocesi ha visto negli anni recenti fiorire e moltiplicarsi diverse forme di impegno e di apostolato laicale. Cari Fratelli e Sorelle, imparate da Maria ad essere testimoni credibili ed apostoli generosi, offrendo il vostro contributo alla grande opera della nuova evangelizzazione. E ricordate sempre che l'autentico apostolato richiede come condizione previa l'incontro personale con Gesù, il Vivente, il Signore (cfr Ap 1,17-18).

5. Maria Santissima rimane modello di quanti ascoltano la Parola di Dio e la mettono in pratica (cfr Lc 8, 21). Come dunque non ci potrebbe essere una profonda intesa spirituale tra i credenti e la Vergine del Magnificat? I poveri e gli umili di tutti i tempi non si sono sbagliati facendo di Maria nel silenzio la loro portavoce e di Maria nel servizio la loro regina.

Anche noi ci accostiamo a lei, per impararne la docilità e l’apertura a Dio. Anche noi, pellegrini del terzo millennio, ci affidiamo alla sua intercessione, affinché con la sua preghiera sostenga la nostra fede, alimenti la nostra speranza, renda operosa la nostra carità:

Santa Maria, Madre di Dio e Madre nostra,

ricordati di tutti i tuoi figli,

vieni in nostro soccorso.

Guidaci all’incontro con Cristo, Via, Verità e Vita;

implora per noi dal Padre i doni dello Spirito,

la protezione dalle insidie e la liberazione dal male.

Aiutaci a testimoniare in ogni circostanza

la fecondità dell’amore e il senso autentico della vita;

insegnaci a edificare con Te il regno del tuo Figlio,

regno di giustizia, di amore e di pace.
