Tornato dal Pellegrinaggio al Monastero di S. Giovanni di Rila, alle 17.30, nella Nunziatura Apostolica a Sofia il Santo Padre incontra il Gran Mùfti Selim Myumyum Mehmed e alcuni Rappresentanti della Comunità Musulmana bulgara.

Alle 18, Giovanni Paolo II incontra nella Nunziatura Apostolica a Sofia una Delegazione di rappresentanti delle "Chiese Evangeliche Unite di Bulgaria" e dell’ "Unione delle Chiese Evangeliche Conciliari".

Alle 18.30, Giovanni Paolo II si reca dalla Nunziatura Apostolica alla Concattedrale Cattolica di rito latino a Sofia, dedicata a S. Giuseppe e affidata alla Provincia polacca dei Frati Minori Cappuccini. Entrando in chiesa il Santo Padre benedice una statua del Beato Giovanni XXXIII, Papa (che soggiornò a lungo in Bulgaria come Rappresentante Pontificio), e le prime pietre dell’erigenda nuova Cattedrale e di un’altra chiesa. Quindi rivolge ai presenti le parole che pubblichiamo di seguito:

Скъпи Братя и Сестри!

1. "Бог на мира ... нека ви направи съвършени във всяко добро, за да можете да изпълнявате Неговата воля, извършвайки във вас онова, което Му е угодно, чрез Исус Христос, на Когото нека бъде слава през всички векове. Амин" /Евр. 13, 20а. 21/.

С това пожелание от Посланието до Евреите, поздравявам сърдечно всички вас в тази ваша Съ-Катедрала, посветена на Свети Йосиф, съпруг на Дева Мария и Покровител на Вселенската Църква.

Отправям мислите си най-вече към Епископ Георги Йовчев, към Свещениците, Монасите и Монахините, като желая от това място да разпростра поздрава си към всички верни католици от Римски Обряд, разпръснати по различните краища на България, по-специално към децата, болните и възрастните.

2. С удоволствие разбрах за започването на строежа на новата Катедрала, недалеч от тук, на същото място, където се е намирала предишната, разрушена по време на войната. Молитвено пожелавам, различните камъни, необходими за построяването й, да бъдат образ на "живите камъни", които всеки от вас е призван да бъде, поради факта, че е получил Святото Кръщение, "за построяването на духовното здание, за Святото Свещенство, за да бъдат принасяни, чрез Исус Христос, угодни на Бога духовни жертви" /1 Петър 2, 5/. Нека ви придружават и подкрепят по пътя на живота застъпничеството и примерът на Блажения Папа Йоан ХХІІІ, чийто бащински образ ви посреща при входа на този храм.

1. "Il Dio della pace ... vi renda perfetti in ogni bene, perché possiate compiere la sua volontà, operando in voi ciò che a lui è gradito per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, al quale sia gloria nei secoli dei secoli. Amen" (Eb 13, 20a.21).

Con questo augurio, tratto dalla Lettera agli Ebrei, vi saluto con affetto, in questa vostra Con-Cattedrale dedicata a San Giuseppe, Sposo della Vergine Maria e Patrono della Chiesa universale.

Il mio pensiero si rivolge innanzitutto al Vescovo Mons. Gheorghi Jovcev, ai sacerdoti, ai religiosi e alle religiose, e da qui desidero estendere il mio saluto a tutti i fedeli cattolici di rito latino, sparsi nelle diverse regioni della Bulgaria, specialmente ai bambini, agli ammalati e agli anziani.

2. Ho appreso con piacere che presto inizieranno i lavori per la nuova Cattedrale poco lontano da qui, nel luogo stesso dove sorgeva l'antica chiesa distrutta dalla guerra. Auguro nella preghiera che le diverse pietre necessarie alla costruzione siano immagine delle "pietre vive" che ciascuno di voi è chiamato ad essere, in virtù del Battesimo, "per la costruzione di un edificio spirituale, per un sacerdozio santo, per offrire sacrifici spirituali graditi a Dio, per mezzo di Gesù Cristo" (1 Pt 2, 5).

L'intercessione e l'esempio del Beato Giovanni XXIII, la cui paterna figura vi accoglie all'ingresso di questa chiesa, vi accompagnino e sostengano nel cammino della vita.

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

1. "May the God of peace . . . equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen" (Heb 13:20-21).

With this wish, taken from the Letter to the Hebrews, I greet you with affection in your Co-Cathedral dedicated to Saint Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Patron of the Universal Church.

My thoughts turn in the first place to Bishop Gheorghi Jovčev, to the priests and to the men and women religious, and from here I wish to extend my greeting to all the Catholic faithful of the Latin Rite in the different localities of Bulgaria, especially to the children, to those who are sick, and to the elderly.

2. I am pleased to learn that work on the new Cathedral will soon begin not far from here, on the very site where there stood the ancient church destroyed by the war. My prayer is that the variety of stones needed for building will be images of the "living stones" that each of you is called to be, by virtue of your Baptism, "built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Pet 2:5).

May the intercession and example of Blessed John XXIII, whose paternal figure stands at the entrance of this church to welcome you, accompany and sustain you on the road of life. With my Apostolic Blessing!

Chers Frères et Sœurs !

1. «Que le Dieu de la paix [...] vous munisse de tout ce qui est bon pour accomplir sa volonté, qu’il réalise en nous ce qui plaît à ses yeux, par Jésus Christ, à qui appartient la gloire pour les siècles des siècles. Amen !» (He 13, 20a.21).

C’est par ce souhait, tiré de la Lettre aux Hébreux, que je vous salue affectueusement, dans votre co-cathédrale, dédiée à saint Joseph, Époux de la Vierge Marie et Patron de l’Église universelle.

Ma pensée se tourne d’abord vers l’Évêque, Mgr Gheorghi Jovcev, vers les prêtres, les religieux et les religieuses, et, de ce lieu, je veux étendre mon salut à tous les fidèles catholiques de rite latin, dispersés dans les différentes régions de Bulgarie, spécialement les enfants, les malades et les personnes âgées.

2. J’ai appris avec plaisir que les travaux pour la nouvelle cathédrale commenceront bientôt, non loin d’ici, sur le lieu même où se dressait l’ancienne église détruite par la guerre. Dans la prière, je souhaite que les différentes pierres nécessaires à la construction soient les images des «pierres vivantes» que vous êtes chacun appelés à être, en vertu de votre Baptême, «pierres vivantes, qui servent à construire le Temple spirituel, et vous serez le sacerdoce saint, présentant des offrandes spirituelles que Dieu pourra accepter à cause du Christ Jésus» (1 P 2, 5).

Par l’intercession et l’exemple du Bienheureux Jean XXIII, dont la figure paternelle vous accueille à l’entrée de cette église, vous accompagnent et vous soutiennent sur la route de la vie.

Dopo aver visitato la Concattedrale Cattolica di rito latino, il Papa si reca alla Cattedrale Cattolica di rito bizantino-slavo, dedicata alla Dormizione della Beata Vergine Maria. All’esterno della Cattedrale Giovanni Paolo II benedice una campana e alcune prime pietre destinate alla costruzione di nuove chiese.

Riportiamo di seguito le parole che il Santo Padre rivolge ai presenti nel corso della visita:

Скъпи Братя и Сестри!

"Мирът Господен да бъде с вас! Благославяйте Бога през всички векове"/ Тоб. 12, 17/!  Щастлив съм да се срещна с всички вас в тази Катедрала, посветена на Успение Богородично. Сърдечно поздравявам вашия Апостолически Екзарх, Монс. Христо Пройков, като му благодаря за любезните думи, с които се обърна към мен. Прегръщам братски почитния Екзарх, Монс. Методий Стратиев, преживял преследванията и затворите заедно с тримата Свещеници Успенци, които утре в Пловдив ще провъзглася за Блажени. Също така, отправям сърдечния си поздрав към всички Cвещеници от Екзархията и поверените на пастирските им грижи присъстващи тук верни.

С особени чувства поздравявам Монахините Кармилитки и Сестрите Евхаристинки, спомняйки си по-специално за онези от тях – живи на земята или живи на небето –, които преживяха, в периода на комунистическата власт, дълъг доброволен затвор на балкона на храма Свети Франческо, като запазиха жив идеала на своето посветяване и поддържаха с молитва и покаяние верността на християните към техния Господ.

Заедно с вас си спомням с възхищение и благодарност за личността и делото на Апостолическия Делегат, Монс. Анджело Джузеппе Ронкалли – Блаженият Папа Йоан ХХІІІ, който се е молил в тази Катедрала и се е раздавал щедро за съживяването на Католическата Църква от Византийско-Славянски Обряд в България. Нека неговите мощи, които ви нося в дар от Рим, бъдат почитани в новостроящия се посветен на него храм.

Същата силна вяра на онези, които са ви предшествали в Католическата Църква в България, ви призовава днес да обновите по един живителен начин вашето свидетелстване за Исус Христос. Насърчен от пълномощията дадени на Свети Петър от Самия Исус, желая от своя страна да ви утвърдя и подкрепя в тази задача. Нека Господ ви придружава и помага в изпълняването на този благороден обет за воденето на християнски начин на живот и, чрез застъпничеството на Неговата Всесвята Майка, почитана като покровителка на единството между християните в светилището на Святата Троица в Малко Търново, да ви обсипе щедро със Своите благословения.

Carissimi Fratelli e Sorelle!

"La pace sia con voi. Benedite Dio per tutti i secoli" (Tb 12, 17). Sono lieto di incontrarmi con tutti voi in questa Cattedrale dedicata alla Dormizione della Beata Vergine Maria. Saluto con affetto il vostro Esarca Apostolico, Mons. Christo Proykov, e lo ringrazio per le amabili parole che mi ha rivolto. Abbraccio fraternamente l'Esarca emerito Mons. Metodi Stratiev, che ha vissuto la persecuzione e la prigionia insieme con i tre sacerdoti assunzionisti che domani a Plovdiv proclamerò Beati, e rivolgo il mio saluto cordiale a tutti i sacerdoti dell'Esarcato e ai fedeli affidati alle loro cure pastorali e qui rappresentati.

Con particolare affetto saluto le Monache Carmelitane e le Suore Eucaristine, ricordando specialmente quelle tra loro - vive sulla terra o vive nel cielo - che hanno vissuto durante il periodo della dominazione comunista la lunga reclusione nel coro della chiesa di San Francesco, mantenendo vivo l'ideale della loro consacrazione e sostenendo con la preghiera e la penitenza la fedeltà dei cristiani al loro Signore.

Insieme con voi, ricordo con ammirazione e gratitudine la figura e l'opera del Delegato Apostolico Mons. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, il Beato Papa Giovanni XXIII, che ha pregato in questa Cattedrale e tanto si è prodigato per la vita della Chiesa Cattolica di rito bizantino-slavo in Bulgaria. La sua reliquia, che vi ho portato in dono da Roma, sia custodita e venerata nell'erigenda chiesa che avete voluto intitolare al suo nome.

La stessa fede coraggiosa di coloro che vi hanno preceduto in questa Chiesa cattolica che è in Bulgaria, vi esorta a rinnovare oggi in modo vivace la vostra testimonianza a Cristo Signore. Confortato dal mandato conferito a Pietro da Gesù stesso, desidero da parte mia sostenervi e confermarvi in questo vostro impegno. Il Signore vi assista e vi aiuti nel proposito generoso di vita cristiana e, per l'intercessione della sua Santissima Madre, venerata con il titolo di Patrona dell'unità dei Cristiani nel Santuario della Santissima Trinità a Malko Tyrnovo, vi doni l'abbondanza delle sue benedizioni.

1. "Peace be with you. Bless God for ever" (Tob 12:17). I am pleased to meet you in this Cathedral dedicated to the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I affectionately greet your Apostolic Exarch Christo Proykov, and I thank him for his kind words to me. I fraternally embrace the Exarch Emeritus Metodi Stratiev, who endured persecution and prison together with the three Assumptionist priests whom I shall proclaim Blessed tomorrow in Plovdiv. I extend cordial greetings also to all the priests of the Exarchate and to the faithful entrusted to their pastoral care and represented here.

With special affection I greet the Carmelite Nuns and the Sisters of the Eucharist, remembering particularly those among them — alive here on earth or already in heaven — who during the period of Communist domination experienced long confinement in the choir of the Church of Saint Francis, keeping alive the ideals of their consecration and supporting through prayer and penance the fidelity of Christians to their Lord.

Together with you, I remember with admiration and gratitude the figure and work of the Apostolic Delegate Archbishop Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, Blessed Pope John XXIII, who prayed in this Cathedral and did so much for the life of the Byzantine-Slavonic Rite Catholic Church in Bulgaria. May the relic of him, which I have brought as a gift from Rome, be kept and venerated in the soon-to-be-built church which, in accordance with your desire, will be dedicated to his name.

The same courageous faith of those who have preceded you in the Catholic Church in Bulgaria calls you to a fervent renewal of your witness to Christ the Lord today. Strengthened by the command given to Peter by Jesus himself, I for my part wish to support you and confirm you in this commitment of yours. May the Lord accompany you and assist you in the generous intentions of your Christian life and, through the intercession of his Most Blessed Mother, venerated under the title of Patroness of Christian Unity in the Shrine of the Most Holy Trinity at Malko Tyrnovo, may he grant you the abundance of his blessings.

«La paix soit avec vous. Bénissez Dieu dans tous les siècles» (Tb 12, 17). Je suis heureux de vous rencontrer tous dans cette cathédrale dédiée à la Dormition de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie. Je salue avec affection votre Exarque apostolique, Mgr Christo Proykov, et je le remercie des aimables paroles qu’il m’a adressées. J’embrasse fraternellement l’Exarque émérite, Mgr Metodi Stratiev, qui a connu la persécution et la prison avec les trois prêtres assomptionnistes que je proclamerai Bienheureux demain, à Plovdiv, et j’adresse mon salut cordial à tous les prêtres de l’exarchat et aux fidèles confiés à leur sollicitude pastorale et représentés ici.

Je salue avec une particulière affection les Moniales carmélites et les Sœurs eucharistines, me souvenant spécialement de celles d’entre elles – qu’elles soient encore vivantes sur cette terre ou déjà au ciel – qui ont vécu pendant la période de la domination communiste la longue réclusion dans le chœur de l’église de Saint-François, en maintenant vivant l’idéal de leur consécration et en soutenant par la prière et par la pénitence la fidélité des chrétiens à leur Seigneur.

Avec vous, je me souviens avec admiration et gratitude de la figure et de l’action du Délégué apostolique, Mgr Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, le Bienheureux Pape Jean XXIII, qui a prié dans cette cathédrale et qui s’est tant dépensé pour la vie de l’Église catholique de rite byzantin-slave en Bulgarie. Que sa relique, que je vous ai apportée comme un don venant de Rome, soit conservée et vénérée dans la future église que vous avez voulu dédier à son nom.

La même foi courageuse de ceux qui vous ont précédés dans cette Église catholique qui est en Bulgarie vous incite à renouveler aujourd’hui de manière vigoureuse le témoignage que vous rendez au Christ Seigneur. Fort du mandat conféré à Pierre par Jésus lui-même, je désire pour

ma part vous soutenir et vous confirmer dans votre engagement. Que le Seigneur vous assiste et vous aide dans votre intention généreuse de vivre chrétiennement et, par l’intercession de sa Très Sainte Mère, vénérée sous le titre de Patronne de l’Unité des Chrétiens dans le sanctuaire de la Très sainte Trinité de Malko Tyrnovo, qu’il vous donne l’abondance de ses Bénédictions !
