Mons. Antonio Mennini, dall’Esarca Apostolico di Sofia e Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale Bulgara, S.E. Mons. Christo Proykov, dal Vescovo di Sofia e Plovdiv, S.E. Mons. Gheorghi Ivanov Jovčev, dal Vescovo di Nicopoli, S.E. Mons. Petko Jordanov Christov, e dal Consigliere della Nunziatura Apostolica, Mons. José Leite Nogueira.
Il Papa si trasferisce, poi, nella Piazza S. Alexander Nevski a Sofia. Qui ha luogo, alla presenza del Presidente della Repubblica della Bulgaria, S.E. il Signor Georgi Parvanov, di Sua Santità il Patriarca Maxim e di altri esponenti del Patriarcato Ortodosso, delle Autorità politiche, civili e religiose, dei 3 Vescovi cattolici del Paese, e del Corpo Diplomatico, la cerimonia di benvenuto.
Dopo il saluto del Presidente della Repubblica della Bulgaria, Giovanni Paolo II rivolge ai presenti il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:

Скъпи Братя и Сестри!

1. С вълнение и дълбока радост идвам днес в България и отправям към вас моя сърдечен поздрав. Благодарен съм на Всемогъщия Бог, че ме удостои с честта да осъществя това свое желание, което нося от дълго време в сърцето си.

Всяка година, по случай празника на Cветите братя Кирил и Методий, Апостоли на Славянските народи, приемам представителите на Държавната власт и на Църквата в България. И така, аз идвам днес, за да върна по някакъв начин вашата визита и да се срещна с Българския народ в неговата прекрасна Страна. Сещам се в този момент за моя предшественик Папа Адриян ІІ, който се срещна със Cветите Солунски братя в Рим. Те донесоха мощите на Свети Климент, Папа и мъченик /срв. Животът на Костантин, ХVІІ,1 /, и засвидетелстваха общението на основаната от тях Църква с Римската Църква. Днес Римският Епископ идва при вас, воден от същите чуства на общение в Христовата любов.

Сещам се също така, в този особен момент, за един друг мой предшественик ) Блаженият Папа Йоан ХХІІІ, който беше Апостолически Делегат в България в продължение на 10 години, като остана дълбоко свързан с тази земя и нейните жители. В негов спомен, любезно поздравявам всички вас и ви уверявам, че никога не съм преставал да обичам Българския народ, представяйки го постоянно пред трона на Всевишния. Нека присъствието ми днес сред вас бъде красноречив израз на почит и обич, които храня към тази благородна Нация и към нейните чеда.

2. Поздравявам сърдечно представителите на Държавната власт, като им благодаря за отправените ми покани и за поетото от тях задължение при осъществяването на това мое посещение. На Вас, Господин Президент, изразявам искрената си признателност за вежливите думи, с които ме посрещнахте на този историчеки площад. Чрез членовете на Дипломатическия корпус, насочвам мислите си към народите, които те представят тук по един достоен начин.

Поздравявам с почит Негово Светейшество Патриарх Максим, Митрополитите и Епископите от Светия Синод, заедно с всички верни на Православната Църква в България. Гoрещо желая, това мое посещение, да послужи за затвърдждаване на взаимното ни познанство и, с Божията помощ, в ден и по начин, който Бог благоволи, да достигнем до състояние на "съвършено единение в мислите и намеренията" / срв. 1 Кор. 1, 10 /, помнейки призива на единствения наш Господ: "Ако се обичате взаимно, всички ще познаят, че сте Мои ученици!"/Йоан 13, 35/.

3. Прегръщам с особено вълнение моите събратя Христо, Георги, Петко и Методий, заедно с всички чеда на Католическата Църква: свещеници, монаси и миряни. Дойдох при вас с поздрав и пожелание за мир, който Възкръсналият Господ дарява на Своите ученици / срв. Йоан 20, 19/, като ви утвърдя във вярата и ви насърча в пътя на християнския живот.

Поздравявам християните от другите Църковни общности, членовете на Еврейската общност с техния Предстоятел, верните на Исляма, предвождани от Главния Мюфтия и, припомняйки срещата в Ассизи, подчертавам тук уверението си, че всяка религия е призвана да прокарва справедливост, мир, прошка, живот и любов между народите.

4. България прие Благата Вест благодарение на проповедническата дейност на Светите братя Кирил и Методий, и, положеното в благодатна почва семе, роди във вековете обилни плодове на християнско свидетелство и святост.

Също така, по време на дългата и мразовита зима на тоталитарния режим, белязал със знака на страданието не само вашата Cтрана, но и много други страни в Европа, верността към Евангелието не намаля, а мнозина чеда на този народ геройски доказаха принадлежността си към Христос, достигайки нерядко дори до жертване на собствения си живот.

Сега бих желал да почета и онези смели свидетели на вярата, принадлежащи към различните Християнски изповедания. Нека Тяхната жертва не бъде без стойност, но да служи за пример и да прави плодотворна икуменичната им ангажираност, с цел пълното единение между християните. Нека се поучават от тях и всички онези, които работят за изграждането на общество, основано върху справедливостта и свободата!

5. Нужно е раните да бъдат лекувани и да се гледа с оптимизъм към бъдещето. Отнася се за един нелек и нелишен от препятствия път, но общото ангажиране на всички обществени слоеве, ще доведе до достигането на желаните цели. Необходимо е да се подхожда с мъдрост към oзаконяването и oпазването на демократичните структури, без да се пестят лишения, като съхранявяте и прокарвате ценностите, съставляващи истинското величие на всяка нация: това са моралната и интелектуална честност, защитата на семейството, помощта към нуждаещите се и почитта към човешкия живот, от момента на зачеването му до неговия естествен край.

Пожелавам ви най-искрено, смело започнатите в България усилия за социално обновление, да намерят нужния интелигентен прием и щедрата подкрепа на Европейската общност.

6. Може би точно тук, близо до гробовете на мъчениците, са се събрали през 342 или 343 година Епископите от Изтока и Запада, за провеждането на важния Сердикийски Събор, по време на който са били обсъждани съдбите на християнска Европа. В последвалите векове тук е била съградена базиликата Света Софúя ) Божествена Премъдрост, Която, според христянския начин на мислене, посочва основите, върху които трябва да бъде изградена човешката цивилизация.

Пътят, водещ към истинския напредък на един народ, не може да бъде само политически и икономически; той трябва да предполага също така и духовно-моралното измерение. Християнството е пуснало дълбоки корени в историята и културата на вашата Страна и този факт не може да бъде пренебреван ако желаете да осъществите процеса на националното ви израстване в бъдещето.

Католическата Църква, с всекидневната ангажираност на нейните чеда и отдаването на разположение на нейните структури, желае да допринася за запазването и развитието на наследството от духовни и културни ценности, с които Страната ви се гордее. Тя иска да свърже своите усилия, които Евангелието може да дари също и на поколенията от новото хилядолетие, с тези на другите християни, за да се отдаде в служба на хората от всички обществени слоеве.

7. България, със своето географско положение, е eдин своеобразен мост между Източна и Западна Европа – почти като един духовен кръстопът – земя на срещи и взаимно разбирателство. Тук са съсредоточени човешките и културни ценности на различните Континентални области, които са намерили прием и уважение. Бих желал публично да почета това традиционното гостоприемство на Българския народ, като припомня по-особено изключителните му заслуги за спасяването на хилядите евреи по време на Втората световна война.

Нека Божията Майка, особено обичана и почитана тук, пази България под своя покров и помага на народа да израства и напредва в братството и съгласието! Нека Всемогъщият Бог дари със Своя благослов тази ваша благородна Страна, като ú осигури цветущо и спокойно бъдеще!

Cari Fratelli e Sorelle!

1. E' con commozione ed intima gioia che mi trovo oggi in Bulgaria e posso rivolgervi il mio saluto cordiale. Ringrazio Dio Onnipotente per avermi concesso di dare compimento ad un desiderio che da tempo portavo nel cuore.

Ogni anno, in occasione della festa dei Santi Cirillo e Metodio, apostoli dei popoli slavi, sono solito accogliere in Vaticano i rappresentanti del Governo e della Chiesa di Bulgaria. Vengo dunque oggi, in un qualche modo, a restituire la visita e ad incontrare nel suo bel Paese il diletto popolo bulgaro. Ripenso in questo momento al mio predecessore, Papa Adriano II, che andò personalmente incontro ai santi Fratelli di Tessalonica, quando vennero a Roma per portare le reliquie di san Clemente, Papa e martire (cfr Vita di Costantino, XVII, 1), e per testimoniare la comunione della Chiesa da essi fondata con la Chiesa di Roma. Oggi è il Vescovo di Roma che viene a voi, mosso dagli stessi sentimenti di comunione nella carità di Cristo.

Il pensiero va pure, in questa particolare circostanza, ad un altro mio predecessore, il Beato Papa Giovanni XXIII, che per una decina d'anni fu Delegato Apostolico in Bulgaria e restò sempre profondamente legato a questa terra e ai suoi abitanti. Nel suo ricordo, saluto tutti con affetto e a tutti dico che in nessuna circostanza ho cessato di amare il popolo bulgaro, presentandolo costantemente nella preghiera al Trono dell'Altissimo: la mia presenza oggi tra voi sia manifestazione eloquente dei sentimenti di stima e di affetto che nutro verso questa nobile Nazione e tutti i suoi figli.

2. Saluto cordialmente le Autorità della Repubblica, e le ringrazio per gli inviti rivoltimi e per l'impegno posto nel predisporre questa mia visita. A Lei, Signor Presidente, esprimo viva riconoscenza per le cortesi parole con le quali mi ha accolto su questa storica piazza. Attraverso gli onorevoli Membri del Corpo Diplomatico, il mio pensiero si volge anche ai popoli che essi degnamente qui rappresentano.

Saluto con deferenza Sua Santità il Patriarca Maxim ed i Metropoliti e Vescovi del Santo Sinodo, insieme ai fedeli tutti della Chiesa Ortodossa di Bulgaria: desidero ardentemente che questa mia visita serva a rafforzare la nostra reciproca conoscenza affinché, con l'aiuto di Dio e nel giorno e nel modo che a Lui piacerà, si possa giungere a vivere "in perfetta unione di pensiero e di intenti" (cfr 1 Cor 1,10), memori della parola dell'unico nostro Signore: "Da questo tutti sapranno che siete miei discepoli, se avrete amore gli uni per gli altri" (Gv 13,35).

3. Abbraccio con particolare affetto i miei fratelli Vescovi Christo, Gheorghi, Petko e Metodi, insieme con tutti i figli e le figlie della Chiesa Cattolica, sacerdoti, religiosi e laici: vengo a voi con il saluto e l'augurio di pace che il Signore risorto offre ai suoi discepoli (cfr Gv 20,19), per confermarvi nella fede ed incoraggiarvi nel cammino della vita cristiana.

Saluto i cristiani delle altre Comunità ecclesiali, i membri della Comunità Ebraica con il loro Presidente e i fedeli dell'islam guidati dal Gran Mufti, e riaffermo qui, sulla scia dell'incontro di Assisi, la convinzione che ogni religione è chiamata a promuovere giustizia e pace tra i popoli, perdono, vita e amore.

4. La Bulgaria ha accolto il Vangelo grazie alla predicazione dei Santi Cirillo e Metodio, e quel seme deposto in terra fertile ha prodotto nell'arco dei secoli copiosi frutti di testimonianza cristiana e di santità. Anche durante il lungo e rigido inverno del sistema totalitario, che ha segnato nella sofferenza il vostro, insieme a tanti altri Paesi d'Europa, la fedeltà al Vangelo non è venuta meno, e numerosi figli di questo popolo hanno vissuto eroicamente l'adesione a Cristo, giungendo in non pochi casi fino al sacrificio della propria vita.

Voglio qui rendere omaggio a questi coraggiosi testimoni della fede, appartenenti alle diverse Confessioni cristiane. Il loro sacrificio non sia vano, ma serva di esempio e renda fecondo l'impegno ecumenico in vista della piena unità dei cristiani. Guardino ad essi anche quanti lavorano per l'edificazione di una società basata sulla verità, sulla giustizia e sulla libertà!

5. Occorre curare le ferite e progettare con ottimismo il futuro. Si tratta, certo, di un cammino non facile né privo di ostacoli, ma l'impegno concorde di tutti i componenti della Nazione renderà possibile il raggiungimento dei traguardi desiderati. Si dovrà tuttavia procedere con saggezza nella legalità e nella salvaguardia delle istituzioni democratiche, senza lesinare sacrifici, custodendo e promuovendo i valori che fondano la vera grandezza di una Nazione: l'onestà morale e intellettuale, la difesa della famiglia, l'accoglienza del bisognoso, il rispetto per la vita umana dal suo concepimento al suo termine naturale.

Formulo l'auspicio che lo sforzo di rinnovamento sociale intrapreso con coraggio dalla Bulgaria trovi l'accoglienza intelligente e il sostegno generoso dell'Unione Europea.

6. Forse proprio qui, vicino alle tombe dei martiri, si radunarono nel 342 o 343 i Vescovi dell'Oriente e dell'Occidente per la celebrazione dell'importante Concilio di Serdica, dove si discussero le sorti dell'Europa cristiana. Nei secoli successivi, qui è sorta la basilica della Sophia, la Divina Sapienza, che secondo il pensiero cristiano indica i fondamenti su cui deve essere edificata la città degli uomini. Il cammino che conduce all'autentico progresso di un popolo non può essere soltanto politico ed economico; esso deve necessariamente presupporre anche la dimensione spirituale e morale. Il cristianesimo è alle radici stesse della storia e della cultura di questo Paese: da esso non si potrà quindi prescindere in un serio processo di crescita proiettato verso il futuro.

La Chiesa Cattolica, con l'impegno quotidiano dei suoi figli e la disponibilità delle sue strutture, intende contribuire a conservare e sviluppare il patrimonio di valori spirituali e culturali di cui il Paese va fiero. Essa desidera congiungere i propri sforzi con quelli degli altri cristiani, per porre al servizio di tutti quei fermenti di civiltà che il Vangelo può offrire anche alle generazioni del nuovo millennio.

7. Per collocazione geografica, la Bulgaria si trova a fare da ponte tra l'Europa orientale e l'Europa del sud, quasi come crocevia spirituale, terra di incontro e di reciproca comprensione. Qui sono confluite le ricchezze umane e culturali delle diverse regioni del Continente, ed hanno trovato accoglienza e rispetto. Desidero rendere pubblicamente omaggio a questa tradizionale ospitalità del popolo bulgaro, ricordando in particolare i benemeriti sforzi compiuti per salvare migliaia di ebrei durante il secondo conflitto mondiale.

La Madre di Dio, qui particolarmente amata e venerata, custodisca la Bulgaria sotto il suo manto ed ottenga al suo popolo di crescere e prosperare nella fraternità e nella concordia! Dio Onnipotente colmi delle sue benedizioni questo vostro nobile Paese, assicurandone un futuro prospero e tranquillo!

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

1. It is with emotion and deep joy that I find myself today in Bulgaria, addressing my warm greetings to you. I thank Almighty God for allowing me to fulfil a desire that I have long held in my heart.

Every year, on the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the Apostles to the Slavs, it is customary for me to receive in the Vatican representatives of the Bulgarian Government and Church. In a way therefore today, I am here to repay those visits and to meet in their own country the beloved Bulgarian people. At this moment, my thoughts turn to my predecessor Pope Adrian II, who went personally to meet the Holy Brothers of Thessalonica when they came to Rome to bring the relics of Saint Clement, Pope and Martyr (cf. Life of Constantine, XVII, 1), and to bear witness to the communion between the Church founded by them and the Church of Rome. Today it is the Bishop of Rome who comes to you, prompted by the same sentiments of communion in the love of Christ.

On this occasion, my thoughts turn also to another of my predecessors, Blessed Pope John XXIII, who was Apostolic Delegate in Bulgaria for ten years and remained always deeply attached to this land and its people. In memory of him, I greet everyone with affection and I say to all that I have never ceased to love the Bulgarian people, lifting them up always in my prayer to the Throne of the Most High: may my presence among you today be a clear sign of my sentiments of esteem and affection for this noble Nation and its children.

2. I cordially greet the Authorities of the Republic. I thank them for their invitation to me and for all that has been done to prepare my visit. To you, Mr President, I express heartfelt gratitude for the kind words with which you welcomed me to this historic Square. Through the distinguished Members of the Diplomatic Corps, my thoughts go also to the peoples whom they so worthily represent.

With respect I greet His Holiness Patriarch Maxim and the Metropolitans and Bishops of the Holy Synod, together with all the faithful of the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria. I fervently hope that my visit will serve to increase our knowledge of each other so that, with God’s help and on the day and in the way that pleases him, we shall finally live "united in the same mind and the same judgment" (1 Cor 1:10), mindful of the words of our one Lord: "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (Jn 13:35).

3. With particular affection I embrace my Brother Bishops Christo, Gheorghi, Petko and Metodi, together with all the sons and daughters of the Catholic Church, priests, religious and laity: I come to you with the greeting and good wishes of peace that the Risen Lord offers to his disciples (cf. Jn 20:19), to confirm you in faith and encourage you on the path of Christian living.

I greet the Christians of the other Ecclesial Communities, the members of the Jewish Community with their President, and the followers of Islam led by the Grand Mufti. I reaffirm here, as I did at the meeting in Assisi, my conviction that every religion is called to promote justice and peace among peoples, forgiveness, life and love.

4. Bulgaria received the Gospel thanks to the preaching of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and down the centuries that seed planted in fertile soil has produced abundant fruits of Christian witness and holiness. Even during the long cold winter of the totalitarian system, which brought suffering to your country and to many other European nations, fidelity to the Gospel did not disappear, and numberless children of this people remained heroically faithful to Christ, in not a few cases to the point of sacrificing their lives.

I wish to honour here those courageous witnesses of faith, members of the various Christian denominations. May their sacrifice not be in vain, and may it serve as an example and make fruitful your ecumenical commitment with a view to the full unity of Christians. May those who work to build a society based on truth, justice and freedom look to them as well!

5. Wounds must be healed, and the future needs to be planned with optimism. This is certainly not an easy road, nor one without obstacles, but the united efforts of all sectors of the Nation will make it possible to achieve the desired goals. At the same time, there is a need to move forward with wisdom, in accordance with law and safeguarding democratic institutions, sparing no sacrifice, maintaining and promoting the values on which the greatness of the Nation is founded: moral and intellectual honesty, the defence of the family, care of the needy, respect for human life from conception until natural death.

I express my hope that the efforts to achieve social renewal, which Bulgaria is courageously undertaking, will be wisely received and generously supported by the European Union.

6. It was perhaps on this very spot, near the tombs of the martyrs, that the Bishops of East and West gathered in 342 or 343 for the important Council of Serdica, where the future of European Christianity was discussed. In the centuries following, there rose here the Basilica of Sophia, Divine Wisdom, which according to Christian thought indicates the foundations on which the city of man is to be built. The path to a people’s authentic progress cannot only be political and economic; it must also necessarily be open to the spiritual and moral dimension. Christianity is part of the roots of this country’s history and culture: therefore it cannot be ignored in any serious process of growth that looks towards the future.

The Catholic Church, with the daily commitment of her children and the ready availability of her structures, intends to contribute to maintaining and developing the heritage of spiritual and cultural values of which the country is so proud. She wishes to join her efforts with those of other Christians, to place at the service of all people those forces of civilization that the Gospel can offer also to the generations of the new millennium.

7. By reason of its geographical location, Bulgaria serves as a bridge between Western Europe and Southern Europe, like a kind of spiritual crossroads, a land of contacts and mutual understanding. Here the human and cultural wealth of the different regions of the Continent have come together: they have been welcomed and respected. I wish to pay a public tribute to the traditional hospitality of the Bulgarian people, remembering especially the noble efforts made to save thousands of Jews during the Second World War.

May the Mother of God, who is particularly loved and venerated here, keep Bulgaria under her mantle and intercede for her people, that they may grow in brotherhood and harmony! May Almighty God fill your noble country with his blessings, assuring it a future of prosperity and peace!

Chers Frères et Sœurs,

1. C’est avec une grande émotion et une profonde joie que je me trouve aujourd’hui en Bulgarie et que je peux vous adresser mes salutations cordiales. Je remercie Dieu tout-puissant de m’avoir permis d’accomplir un désir que depuis longtemps je portais dans mon cœur.

Chaque année, à l’occasion de la fête des saints Cyrille et Méthode, apôtres des peuples slaves, j’ai l’habitude d’accueillir au Vatican les représentants du Gouvernement et de l’Église de Bulgarie. Je viens donc aujourd’hui d’une certaine façon rendre la visite et rencontrer dans son beau pays le cher peuple bulgare. Je pense en ce moment à mon prédécesseur le Pape Adrien II, qui alla personnellement à la rencontre des saints frères de Thessalonique, lorsqu’ils vinrent apporter à Rome les reliques de saint Clément, Pape et martyr (cf. Vie de Constantin, XVII, 1), et témoigner de la communion de l’Église qu’ils avaient fondée avec l’Église de Rome. Aujourd’hui, c’est l’Évêque de Rome qui vient à vous, animé des mêmes sentiments de communion dans la charité du Christ.

Ma pensée va aussi, en cette circonstance particulière, à un autre de mes prédécesseurs, le bienheureux Pape Jean XXIII, qui fut durant une dizaine d’années Délégué apostolique en Bulgarie et qui resta toujours profondément lié à cette terre et à ses habitants. En souvenir de lui, je vous salue tous avec affection et je dis à tous qu’en aucune circonstance je n’ai cessé d’aimer le peuple bulgare, le portant constamment dans la prière au Trône du Très-Haut : que ma présence aujourd’hui parmi vous soit une manifestation éloquente des sentiments d’estime et d’affection que je nourris envers cette noble Nation et envers tous ses fils !

2. Je salue cordialement les Autorités de la République et je les remercie des invitations qui m’ont été adressées et du soin avec lequel ma visite a été préparée. À vous, Monsieur le Président, j’exprime ma vive reconnaissance pour les paroles courtoises avec lesquelles vous m’avez accueilli sur cette place historique. À travers les Membres du Corps diplomatique, ma pensée se tourne aussi vers les peuples qu’ils représentent dignement ici.

Je salue avec déférence Sa Sainteté le Patriarche Maxim ainsi que les Métropolites et les Évêques du Saint-Synode, en même temps que tous les fidèles de l’Église orthodoxe de Bulgarie : je désire que ma visite serve à renforcer notre connaissance réciproque, afin qu’avec l’aide de Dieu, au jour et de la manière qui Lui plairont, il soit possible d’en arriver à vivre «bien unis dans un même esprit et dans une même pensée» (1 Co 1, 10), en nous souvenant de la parole de notre unique Seigneur : «À ceci tous vous reconnaîtront pour mes disciples : à l’amour que vous aurez les uns pour les autres» (Jn 13, 35).

3. J’embrasse avec une particulière affection mes frères Évêques Christo, Gheorghi, Petko et Metodi, avec tous les fils et les filles de l’Église catholique, prêtres, religieux et laïcs : je viens à vous avec la salutation et le souhait de paix que le Seigneur ressuscité offre à ses disciples (cf. Jn 20, 19), pour vous confirmer dans la foi et vous encourager sur le chemin de la vie chrétienne.

Je salue les chrétiens des autres Communautés ecclésiales, les membres de la Communauté juive avec leur Président, et les fidèles de l’Islam guidés par le Grand Mufti, et j’affirme de nouveau ici, dans l’esprit de la rencontre d’Assise, la conviction que toute religion est appelée à promouvoir la justice et la paix entre les peuples, le pardon, la vie et l’amour.

4. La Bulgarie a accueilli l’Évangile grâce à la prédication des saints Cyrille et Méthode, et cette semence déposée en terre fertile a produit au cours des siècles des fruits abondants de témoignage chrétien et de sainteté. Même durant le long et rude hiver du système totalitaire qui a marqué de souffrance votre pays, en même temps que bien d’autres pays d’Europe, la fidélité à l’Évangile n’a pas fait défaut, et de nombreux fils de ce peuple ont vécu héroïquement leur adhésion au Christ, allant dans beaucoup de cas jusqu’au sacrifice de leur vie.

Je veux ici rendre hommage à ces courageux témoins de la foi appartenant aux différentes Confessions chrétiennes. Que leur sacrifice ne soit pas vain mais qu’il serve d’exemple et rende fécond l’engagement œcuménique en vue de la pleine unité des chrétiens ! Que ceux qui œuvrent pour l’édification d’une société fondée sur la vérité, sur la justice et sur la liberté tournent eux aussi leurs yeux vers eux !

5. Il faut soigner les plaies et envisager l’avenir avec optimisme. Il s’agit, c’est certain, d’un chemin qui n’est pas facile ni privé d’obstacles, mais l’effort conjugué de toutes les composantes de la Nation permettra d’atteindre les buts désirés. Il faudra toutefois procéder avec sagesse, dans la légalité et dans la sauvegarde des institutions démocratiques, sans lésiner sur les sacrifices, en sauvegardant et en promouvant les valeurs qui fondent la vraie grandeur d’une nation : l’honnêteté morale et intellectuelle, la défense de la famille, l’accueil des nécessiteux, le respect pour la vie humaine de sa conception à sa fin naturelle.

Je forme le vœu que l’effort de renouveau social entrepris avec courage par la Bulgarie trouve l’accueil compréhensif et le soutien généreux de l’Union européenne.

6. C’est peut-être ici précisément, près des tombes des martyrs, que se réunirent en 342 ou 343 les Évêques de l’Orient et de l’Occident pour la célébration de l’important Concile de Sardique, où l’on discuta du sort de l’Europe chrétienne. Au cours des siècles suivants a été édifiée ici la basilique de la Sophia, la divine Sagesse, qui, selon la pensée chrétienne, désigne les fondements sur lesquels doit être édifiée la cité des hommes. La voie qui conduit au progrès authentique d’un peuple ne peut être seulement politique et économique; elle doit nécessairement avoir aussi comme présupposé la dimension spirituelle et morale. Le christianisme est à la racine même de l’histoire et de la culture de ce pays : un sérieux processus de croissance tourné vers l’avenir ne pourra donc pas faire abstraction de lui.

Par l’engagement quotidien de ses fils et la disponibilité de ses structures, l’Église catholique entend contribuer à la conservation et au développement du patrimoine de valeurs spirituelles et culturelles dont le pays doit être fier. Elle désire unir ses efforts à ceux des autres chrétiens afin de mettre au service de tous les ferments de civilisation que l’Évangile peut offrir aux générations du nouveau millénaire.

7. Par sa situation géographique, la Bulgarie est amenée à servir de pont entre l’Europe orientale et l’Europe du Sud, en quelque sorte un carrefour spirituel, une terre de rencontre et de compréhension réciproque. Ici ont confluées les richesses humaines et culturelles des diverses régions du Continent, et elles ont reçu accueil et considération : je veux rendre hommage publiquement à la traditionnelle hospitalité du peuple bulgare, en rappelant notamment les efforts très méritants accomplis pour sauver des milliers de juifs durant la deuxième guerre mondiale.

Que la Mère du Dieu, particulièrement aimée et vénérée ici, garde la Bulgarie sous son manteau, et qu’elle obtienne à son peuple de croître et de prospérer dans la fraternité et dans la concorde ! Que Dieu tout-puissant comble de ses bénédictions votre noble pays, en lui assurant un avenir prospère et tranquille !
