Alle ore 9 di oggi, Festa della Natività di San Giovanni Battista, il Papa presiede la Celebrazione Eucaristica in rito romano nell’aeroporto di Chayka, alla periferia ovest di Kyiv. Concelebrano con il Santo Padre i Vescovi cattolici dell’Ucraina.

Nel corso della Santa Messa, introdotta dall’indirizzo di omaggio del Vescovo di Kyiv-Zhytomyr, S.E. Mons. Jan Purwiński, Giovanni Paolo II pronuncia l’omelia in lingua ucraina e polacca. Di seguito ne pubblichiamo la traduzione in italiano e inglese:

1. "Il Signore dal seno materno mi ha chiamato, fino dal grembo di mia madre ha pronunziato il mio nome" (Is 49,1).

Celebriamo quest'oggi la nascita di san Giovanni Battista. Le parole del profeta Isaia ben si addicono a questa grande figura biblica che sta tra l'Antico e il Nuovo Testamento. Nella lunga schiera dei profeti e dei giusti d'Israele Giovanni "il Battezzatore" è stato posto dalla Provvidenza immediatamente prima del Messia, per preparare dinanzi a Lui la via con la predicazione e con la testimonianza della vita.

Tra tutti i Santi e le Sante, Giovanni è l'unico di cui la Liturgia celebri la nascita. Abbiamo udito nella prima Lettura che il Signore ha chiamato il suo Servo "fino dal grembo materno". Questa affermazione si riferisce nella sua pienezza al Cristo, ma, quasi di riflesso, si può applicare anche al suo Precursore. Entrambi vengono alla luce grazie ad un intervento speciale di Dio: il primo nasce dalla Vergine, il secondo da una donna anziana e sterile. Fin dal grembo materno Giovanni preannuncia Colui che rivelerà al mondo l'iniziativa d'amore di Dio.

2. "Dal grembo di mia madre tu mi hai chiamato" (Salmo resp.). Possiamo fare nostra, oggi, quest'esclamazione del Salmista. Dio ci ha conosciuti ed amati prima ancora che i nostri occhi potessero contemplare le meraviglie del creato. Ogni uomo nascendo riceve un nome umano. Ma prima ancora, egli possiede un nome divino: il nome con il quale Dio Padre lo conosce e lo ama da sempre e per sempre. Così è per tutti, nessuno escluso. Nessun uomo è anonimo per Dio! Tutti hanno uguale valore ai suoi occhi: tutti diversi, ma tutti uguali, tutti chiamati ad essere figli nel Figlio.

"Giovanni è il suo nome" (Lc 1,63). Zaccaria conferma ai parenti stupiti il nome del figlio, scrivendolo su una tavoletta. Dio stesso, mediante il suo angelo, aveva indicato quel nome, che in ebraico significa "Dio è favorevole". Dio è favorevole all'uomo: vuole la sua vita, la sua salvezza. Dio è favorevole al suo popolo: ne vuol fare una benedizione per tutte le nazioni della terra. Dio è favorevole all'umanità: ne guida il cammino verso la terra dove regnano pace e giustizia. Tutto questo è inscritto in quel nome: Giovanni!

Carissimi Fratelli e Sorelle! Giovanni Battista era il messaggero, il precursore: era stato inviato per preparare la via a Cristo. Che cosa ci dice la figura di san Giovanni Battista proprio qui, a Kyiv, all'inizio di questo pellegrinaggio nella vostra Terra? Non è, in un certo senso, provvidenziale il fatto che questa figura si rivolga a noi proprio a Kyiv?

3. Qui ebbe luogo il Battesimo della Rus'. Da Kyiv cominciò quella fioritura di vita cristiana che il Vangelo avrebbe suscitato dapprima nella terra dell'antica Rus', poi nei territori dell'Europa dell'Est e, in seguito, oltre gli Urali, nel territori asiatici. Anche Kyiv, dunque, ha svolto in un certo senso il ruolo di "precursore del Signore" tra i numerosi popoli a cui l'annuncio della salvezza sarebbe giunto partendo da qui.

San Vladimiro e gli abitanti della Rus' ricevettero il battesimo da missionari provenienti da Costantinopoli, il più grande centro del cristianesimo d'Oriente, e così la giovane Chiesa entrò nell'ambito della ricchissima eredità di fede e di cultura della Chiesa bizantina. Era la fine del primo millennio. Pur vivendo secondo due tradizioni diverse, la Chiesa di Costantinopoli e quella di Roma rimanevano ancora in piena comunione. Ho scritto nella Lettera Apostolica Euntes in mundum: "Dobbiamo ringraziare insieme il Signore per questo fatto, che rappresenta oggi un auspicio ed una speranza. Dio ha voluto che la madre Chiesa, visibilmente unita, accogliesse nel suo grembo, già ricco di Nazioni e di popoli, ed in un momento di espansione missionaria sia in Occidente sia in Oriente, questa sua nuova figlia sulle rive del Dniepr" (n. 4).

Se dunque oggi, celebrando l'Eucaristia secondo la tradizione romana, ricordiamo quel momento così profondamente connesso alla tradizione bizantina, lo facciamo con gratitudine. Lo facciamo anche con il desiderio che il ricordo dell'unico fonte battesimale favorisca il ricupero di quella situazione di comunione in cui la diversità delle tradizioni non impediva l'unità della fede e della vita ecclesiale.

4. Con il Battesimo avvenuto qui, a Kyiv, ebbe inizio la millenaria storia del cristianesimo nei territori dell'odierna Ucraina e dell'intera regione. Oggi, avendo la grazia di sostare in questo luogo storico, il mio sguardo è portato a spaziare sugli oltre dieci secoli durante i quali la grazia di quel primo Battesimo ha continuato a riversarsi sulle successive generazioni dei figli di questa Nazione. Quale fioritura di vita spirituale, liturgica ed ecclesiale si è sviluppata dall'incontro delle diverse culture e tradizioni religiose! Questa splendida eredità è ora affidata a voi, cari Fratelli e Sorelle. In questi giorni, che mi vedono peregrino nella vostra Terra, io prego Dio insieme con voi, perché la vostra generazione, all'inizio di un nuovo millennio, sia all'altezza delle grandi tradizioni del passato.

Da questa Città, culla delle fede cristiana per l'Ucraina e per l'intera regione, volgo lo sguardo e abbraccio con affetto cordiale gli uomini che dimorano in queste terre. Saluto, in modo speciale, i Signori Cardinali Marian Jaworski e Lubomyr Husar, il caro Vescovo di Kyiv-Zhytomyr, Mons. Jan Purwiński, i venerati Fratelli della Conferenza Episcopale Ucraina e del Sinodo dei Vescovi della Chiesa Greco-cattolica Ucraina, il clero, i religiosi, le religiose ed i fedeli delle vostre gloriose e martoriate Chiese, che con tanto coraggio hanno saputo tenere accesa la fiaccola della fede anche nei tempi bui della persecuzione. Saluto cordialmente il Signor Presidente della Repubblica Leonid Kučma e lo ringrazio per la sua presenza.

5. Popolo di Dio che credi, speri ed ami in Terra ucraina, riassapora con gioia il dono del Vangelo, che hai ricevuto oltre mille anni or sono! Guarda in questo giorno a Giovanni il Battista, modello perenne di fedeltà a Dio e alla sua Legge. Egli ha preparato a Cristo la via con la testimonianza della parola e della vita. Imitalo con docile e fiduciosa generosità.

San Giovanni Battista è anzitutto modello di fede. Sulla scia del grande profeta Elia, per ascoltare meglio la Parola dell'unico Signore della sua vita, egli lascia tutto e si ritira nel deserto, da dove farà risuonare l'invito a preparare le vie del Signore (cfr Mt 3,3 e par.).

È modello di umiltà, perché a quanti vedono in lui, non solo un Profeta, ma addirittura il Messia, risponde: "Io non sono ciò che voi pensate che io sia! Ecco, viene dopo di me uno, al quale io non sono degno di sciogliere i sandali" (At 13,25).

È modello di coerenza e di coraggio nel difendere la verità, per la quale è pronto a pagare di persona fino al carcere e alla morte.

Terra d'Ucraina, intrisa del sangue dei martiri, grazie per l'esempio di fedeltà al Vangelo che hai offerto ai cristiani di ogni parte del mondo! Tanti tuoi figli e figlie hanno camminato in piena fedeltà a Cristo; molti di loro hanno spinto la loro coerenza fino al sacrificio supremo. La loro testimonianza sia per i cristiani del terzo millennio di esempio e di sprone.

6. Alla scuola di Cristo, sulle le orme di san Giovanni Battista, dei Santi e dei Martiri di questa Terra, abbiate anche voi, carissimi Fratelli e Sorelle, il coraggio di mettere sempre al primo posto i valori spirituali.

Cari Vescovi, sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose, che avete fedelmente accompagnato questo popolo a prezzo di sacrifici personali di ogni genere e lo avete sostenuto nei tempi bui del terrore comunista, vi ringrazio e vi esorto: continuate ad essere zelanti testimoni di Cristo e buoni pastori del suo gregge nell'amata Ucraina.

Voi, cari giovani, siate forti e liberi! Non lasciatevi incantare da ingannevoli miraggi di felicità a buon mercato. Seguite la via di Cristo: Egli è esigente, certo, ma può farvi gustare il senso pieno della vita e la pace del cuore.

Voi, cari genitori, preparate la via del Signore davanti ai vostri figli. Educateli con amore e date loro un valido esempio di coerenza con i principi che insegnate. E voi che avete responsabilità educative e sociali sentitevi impegnati a promuovere sempre lo sviluppo integrale della persona umana, coltivando nei giovani un profondo senso di giustizia e di solidarietà con i più deboli.

Siate, tutti e ciascuno, "luce delle nazioni" (Is 49,6)!

7. "Luce dell'Ucraina" sii tu, città di Kyiv. Da Te sono partiti gli evangelizzatori che, nel corso dei secoli, sono stati i "Giovanni Battista" dei popoli che abitavano queste terre. Quanti tra loro hanno sofferto, come Giovanni, per rendere testimonianza alla verità e sono diventati con il loro sangue seme di nuovi cristiani. Non manchino nelle nuove generazioni uomini e donne della tempra di questi gloriosi antenati!

Vergine Santissima, Protettrice dell'Ucraina, Tu da sempre hai guidato il cammino del popolo cristiano. Continua a vegliare sui tuoi figli. Aiutali a non dimenticare mai il "nome", l'identità spirituale che hanno ricevuto nel Battesimo. Aiutali a gioire sempre della grazia inestimabile di essere discepoli di Cristo (cfr Gv 3,29). Sii Tu la guida di ciascuno. Tu, Madre di Dio e Madre nostra, Maria!

1. "The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name" (Is 49:1).

Today we celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist. The words of the Prophet Isaiah are well-suited to describe this great biblical figure who stands between the Old and the New Testaments. In the long line of Israel’s prophets and just men and women, John "the Baptizer" was placed by God’s providence immediately before the Messiah, in order to prepare the way before him by his preaching and by the witness of his life.

Of all the Saints, John is the only one whose birth is celebrated by the Liturgy. We heard in the first Reading that the Lord called his Servant "from his mother’s womb". This statement refers in its fullest sense to Christ, but in a derivative way it can also be applied to his Precursor. Both are born as the result of a special intervention by God: the first is born of the Virgin, the second of an elderly and barren woman. Even from his mother’s womb John indicates the One who will reveal to the world the loving plan of God.

2. "From my mother’s womb you called me" (Responsorial Psalm)

Today we can make our own these words of the Psalmist. God knew and loved us even before our eyes could contemplate the marvels of creation. At birth all men and women receive a human name. But even before that, each one has a divine name: the name by which God the Father knows and loves them from eternity and for eternity. This is true for everyone, with the exception of none. No one is nameless in God’s sight! All have equal value in his eyes: all are different, yet all are equal, and all are called to be sons and daughters in the Son.

"His name is John" (Lk 1:63). Before his astonished kinsmen, Zechariah confirms that this is the name of his son, writing it on a tablet. God himself, through his angel, had given that name, which in Hebrew means "God is benevolent". God is benevolent to human beings: he wants them to live; he wants them to be saved. God is benevolent to his people: he wants to make of them a blessing for all the nations of the earth. God is benevolent to humanity: he guides its pilgrim way towards the land where peace and justice reign. All this is contained in that name: John!

Dear brothers and sisters! John the Baptist was the messenger, the forerunner: he was sent to prepare the way for Christ. How does the figure of Saint John the Baptist speak to us here, in Kyiv, at the beginning of this pilgrimage in your country? Is it not in some way providential that this figure speaks to us precisely here in Kyiv?

3. This is the place of the Baptism of Rus’. From Kyiv there began that flowering of Christian life which the Gospel first brought forth in the land of the ancient Rus’, then in the lands of Eastern Europe and, later, beyond the Urals, in the lands of Asia. In a certain sense, then, Kyiv itself played the role of a "precursor of the Lord" among the many peoples who would receive the proclamation of the Gospel from here.

Saint Volodymyr and the inhabitants of Rus’ were baptized by missionaries sent from Constantinople, the greatest centre of Christianity in the East. Thus the new-born Church entered the sphere of the exceedingly rich patrimony of faith and culture of the Byzantine Church. This was at the end of the first millennium. While living according to two different traditions, the Church of Constantinople and the Church of Rome were still in full communion. As I wrote in my Apostolic Letter Euntes in Mundum: "We ought to thank the Lord together for this fact, which today represents a good omen and a hope. God willed that Mother Church, visibly united, should welcome into her bosom, already rich with nations and peoples, and at a moment of missionary expansion both in the West and in the East, this her new daughter on the banks of the Dnieper" (No. 4).

If, as we celebrate the Eucharist today according to the Roman tradition, we recall that moment so profoundly linked to the Byzantine tradition, we do so with gratitude. And we do so with the desire that the memory of the one baptism which we share will help to restore that situation of communion in which diversity of traditions posed no obstacle to unity in faith and ecclesial life.

4. The Baptism which took place here, in Kyiv, inaugurated the thousand-year history of Christianity in the lands of today’s Ukraine and in the whole region. Today, having the grace of coming to this historic place, my thoughts go back through the more than ten centuries in which the gift of that first Baptism has continued to be poured out upon successive generations of the sons and daughters of this Nation. What a flowering of spiritual, liturgical and ecclesial life developed from the meeting of different cultures and religious traditions! This splendid inheritance is now entrusted to you, dear brothers and sisters. During these days of my pilgrimage to your country, I join you in praying that your own generation, at the beginning of a new millenium, will prove worthy of the great traditions of its past.

From this City, the cradle of the Christian faith for Ukraine and for the whole area, I greet and embrace with heartfelt affection all the men and women living in these lands. In a special way I greet Cardinals Marian Jaworski and Lubomyr Husar, together with the beloved Bishop of Kyiv-Zhytomyr, Jan Purwiński, my venerable Brothers from the Ukrainian Episcopal Conference and the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. I greet the clergy, the men and women religious and the lay faithful of your glorious and sorely-tried Churches; with great courage they were able to keep alight the lamp of faith even in the dark times of persecution. I also greet the President of the Republic, Mr Leonid Kuchma, and I thank him for his presence.

5. People of God, you who believe, hope and love in the land of Ukraine, joyfully savour once more the gift of the Gospel which you received over a thouand years ago! Look today to John the Baptist, an enduring model of fidelity to God and his Law. John prepared the way for Christ by the testimony of his word and his life. Imitate him with docile and trusting generosity.

Saint John the Baptist is above all a model of faith. Following the example of the great Prophet Elijah, in order to listen more attentively to the word of the one Lord of his life, he leaves everything and withdraws to the desert, from which he would issue the resounding call to prepare the way of the Lord (cf. Mt 3:3 and parallels).

He is a model of humility, because to those who saw in him not only a Prophet, but the Messiah himself, he replied: "Who do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie" (Acts 13:25).

He is a model of uprightness and courage in defending the truth, for which he was prepared to pay in his person, even to the point of imprisonment and death.

Land of Ukraine, drenched with the blood of martyrs, thank you for the example of fidelity to the Gospel which you have given to Christians the world over! So many of your sons and daughters walked in complete fidelity to Christ; many of them remained constant even to the supreme sacrifice. May their witness serve as an example and a stimulus for the Christians of the third millenium.

6. In the school of Christ, in the footsteps of Saint John the Baptist and of the saints and martyrs of this land, may you too, dear brothers and sisters, be brave enough always to give priority to the values of the spirit.

Dear Bishops, priests, men and women religious, who have faithfully accompanied this people at the price of personal sacrifices of every kind, sustaining them in the dark times of the Communist terror, I thank you and I offer you this encouragement: continue to be zealous witnesses to Christ and good shepherds of his flock in this beloved country of Ukraine.

You, dear young people, be brave and free! Do not let yourselves be taken in by the deceptive mirages of an easy happiness. Follow the way of Christ: he is demanding, certainly, but he alone can help you to savour the full meaning of life and enjoy peace of heart.

You, dear parents, prepare the way of the Lord before your children. Bring them up with love, and set a good example by living the principles you teach. And you, teachers and leaders of society, deepen your commitment to promoting the complete development of the human person, fostering in the young a deep sense of justice and of solidarity with the less fortunate.

May you be, one and all, "a light to the nations" (Is 49:6)!

7. City of Kyiv, may you be a "light to Ukraine". From you there set out the evangelizers who down the centuries have been "John the Baptists" for the peoples dwelling in these lands. How many of them, like John, suffered in order to bear witness to the truth, and by their blood became the seed of new Christians. May future generations never lack men and women of the mettle of these, your glorious ancestors.

Most Holy Virgin, Protectress of Ukraine, you have always guided the Christian people on their pilgrim way. Continue to watch over your children. Help them never to forget the "name", the spiritual identity which they received in Baptism. Help them to rejoice always in the priceless grace of being followers of Christ (cf. Jn 3:29). May you be the guide of each one. You, Mother of God and our Mother, Mary!

Questa la traduzione in lingua italiana e inglese delle parole in ucraino che il Papa pronuncia nell’introdurre la preghiera mariana:

Prima di concludere questa solenne celebrazione eucaristica, ci rivolgiamo con la preghiera dell'Angelus a Maria Santissima, verso la quale il popolo ucraino nutre una profonda devozione.

Maria, la prima e perfetta discepola del suo Figlio, è figura e modello della Chiesa che accoglie con fede la parola del Signore. La sua protezione ha accompagnato i passi della comunità cristiana in Ucraina sin dal Battesimo della Rus' nel 988.

Bagnata dal grande fiume della fede, l'Ucraina è così diventata terra cristiana e, al tempo stesso, terra mariana. Lo attestano i numerosi Santuari, nei quali si esprime tutto l'amore dei fedeli verso la Madre celeste. Per i fedeli di rito latino penso, in particolare, ai Santuari di Berdichiv e di Letichiv. Tra i fedeli di rito bizantino, grande richiamo esercitano i Santuari di Zarvanytsia e di Hoshiv. Con la mente e con il cuore mi reco in tali luoghi di culto e mi prostro devotamente ai piedi della Vergine e per tutti ne invoco la materna protezione.

Alla celeste intercessione di Maria affido questa mia visita pastorale e quanti avrò modo di incontrare durante questi giorni. In modo speciale, chiedo a Lei, Madre della Chiesa, di affrettare i passi di tutti i cristiani verso la piena comunione. Che in Ucraina e ovunque nel mondo, i credenti in Cristo possano quanto prima realizzare l'invito accorato dell'unico Signore: "Ut omnes unum sint!" (Gv 17, 21). Che ciò avvenga per Mariam, Madre di tutti i credenti, Madre dell'unità!

Before concluding this solemn Eucharistic celebration, let us turn in the prayer of the Angelus to Mary Most Holy, to whom the Ukrainian people are deeply devoted.

Mary, the first and the most perfect disciple of her Son, is a figure and a model of the Church which welcomes the word of the Lord in faith. Her protection has accompanied every step of the Christian community in Ukraine ever since the Baptism of Rus’ in 988.

Bathed by the great river of faith, Ukraine thus became a Christian land and, at the same time, a Marian country. This can be seen in the numerous shrines which express the deep love of the faithful for their heavenly Mother. For the faithful of the Latin Rite I am thinking, in particular, of the Shrines of Berdichiv and of Letichiv. Among the faithful of the Byzantine Rite the Shrines of Zarvanytsia and of Hoshiv are greatly venerated. In mind and heart I wish to visit these places of worship and prostrate myself devoutly at the feet of the Virgin to invoke upon everyone her maternal protection.

To Mary’s heavenly intercession I entrust this my pastoral visit and all those whom I shall meet during these days. In a special way I ask her, Mother of the Church, to hasten the steps of all Christians towards full communion. In Ukraine and throughout the world, may believers in Christ be able as soon as possible to fulfil the heartfelt prayer of the one Lord: "Ut omnes unum sint!" (Jn 17:2). May this take place per Mariam, through Mary, Mother of all believers, Mother of unity!
