Lasciata la Nunziatura Apostolica di Rabat, alle 16.30 il Papa si reca a visitare la Tomba del nuovo Beato Don George Preca, presso la quale si raccoglie in preghiera, nella chiesa della Madonna della Medaglia Miracolosa a Hamrun, chiesa che è oggi il Centro della Società della Dottrina Cristiana a Malta.

Dopo essersi raccolto in preghiera presso le spoglie mortali del Beato Don George Preca, il Papa incontra i Membri della "Societas Doctrinae Christianae" nel Centro adiacente alla Chiesa della Madonna della Medaglia Miracolosa e rivolge ai presenti il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:

Mr President and Maltese Authorities,
Dear Cardinals and Brother Bishops,
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

1. In the joy of Easter I make my own the words of the Risen Lord: "Peace be with you! Il-paci maghkom! I thank you for your warm welcome. It shows that the hospitality which once embraced the Apostle Paul (cf. Acts 28:2) is still to be found in Malta. I am grateful for the gracious words spoken on behalf of both branches of the Society by the Superior General, who expressed all your love for the Church and for the Successor of Peter.

2. The island of Malta is a rock rising from the sea, where the soil is often thin and the sun harsh. Even this place where we are meeting bears the name Blata l-Bajda, the "White Rock". Yet down the centuries Malta has been extraordinarily generous and fertile in the deeper ways of the Spirit. The unshakeable faith of the Maltese people has ensured that this rock has been the good soil of which the Gospel speaks. In this soil, Blessed Gorg Preca planted the Society of Christian Doctrine, where it has flourished in the century of its life. Unlike the fig-tree of the Gospel story which we have just heard (cf. Lk 13:6-9), you have produced fruit in abundance, and for that we give glory to God and thank him here today.

Not only did Dun Gorg sow the seed; he tended the sapling and fed the young tree so that it would grow strong and fruitful, as it has. You have flourished because you have roots reaching deep into Christ, and because you have been well nurtured by Dun Gorg's life of holiness.

To understand your vocation more deeply, consider the fig-tree. Its new leaves are a sign that summer is at hand (cf. Lk 21:29-31); in the hot season, its shade provides shelter from the sun; it gives abundant sweet fruit as food; and Scripture says that its fruit has healing power (cf. Is 38:21). This is an image of what you are called to be! As catechists, you are to provide sweet nourishment for all who hunger for God; you are to bring healing to those who are suffering for lack of light and love. If you do these things, you will truly be a sign of the springtime which the Holy Spirit is now preparing for the Church.

3. Wherever Dun Gorg went to preach he was followed by crowds of people. They were captivated by his words. Why? It was because they recognized in the preaching of Dun Gorg the voice of Jesus himself. It was the Lord to whom they were listening; they were drawn by the irresistible attractiveness of Christ who alone, they knew, could satisfy the deepest longing of their hearts. The beauty of holiness which is found supremely in Jesus and is reflected in today’s new Beatus will never fail to draw the human heart. It is certain that if we can show forth the face of the Risen Lord to the world then we shall touch and win souls in ways that will be surprising!

4. It is in the depths of contemplation that we discover "the glory of God which is in the face of Christ" (2 Cor 4:6). That is why your rule of life urges you to pray often and to meet regularly with your spiritual director, who serves as guide and companion on the path of your fidelity. To contemplate the face of Christ is to be filled with spiritual energy for the mission entrusted to you. Like Saint Paul, from contemplation you are called to go forth as missionaries: not just as teachers but as witnesses who can speak with power because you can say, like the first disciples: "We have seen the Lord!" (Jn 20:25). It was Pope Paul VI who wrote that "the people of our day are more impressed by witnesses than by teachers, and if they listen to these it is because they also bear witness" (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 41). This was true of Dun Gorg in a wonderful way, and it must also be true of you, his spiritual children.

In his Letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul writes that God "was pleased to reveal his Son in me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles" (1:16). He does not speak of Christ revealed "to me" but of Christ revealed "in me". Once Jesus reveals himself to Saul on the road to Damascus, and once Paul opens his heart to receive the gift, the Apostle himself then becomes the revelation. He is filled with Christ, so that he can say in the same Letter: "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me" (2:20). His whole life, all that he does, says and thinks, his body, mind, heart and soul, become the revelation of Jesus to the world. This is the mystery of the sublime vocation given not just to Saint Paul and Blessed Gorg Preca, but to each of you as well.

5. Your founder was especially devoted to the words: Verbum Dei caro factum est; based on the Prologue of Saint John’s Gospel: "The Word was made flesh" (1:14). Here in fact is the foundation of your vocation and apostolate. The Divine Word in a certain sense continually takes flesh in his Mystical Body, the Church. You are to help in this by doing for others what Dun Gorg has done for you. You are to plant the seed of God’s word in people’s hearts, so that Christ may live in them! You must teach everyone – children, young people, adults – to contemplate the face of Christ, to see the Lord (cf. Novo Millennio Ineunte, 16), so that the light of God’s glory which shines from the face of Jesus may shine forth from them as well. This is the "rooting of the Church in time and place [which] mirrors the movement of the Incarnation itself" (ibid. 3).

As you set forth and continue this sacred mission, let the words of your founder echo ceaselessly in your hearts: MUSEUM – Magister, utinam sequatur Evangelium universus mundus! Divine Teacher, may the whole world follow the Gospel! Entrusting you to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Saint Paul and Blessed Gorg Preca, as well as Blessed Ignatius and Blessed Adeodata also beatified today, I impart my Apostolic Blessing to all the members of the Society of Christian Doctrine as a pledge of endless mercy in Jesus Christ, "the faithful witness and firstborn from the dead" (Rev 1:5). Signor Presidente e Autorità maltesi,
Cari Cardinali e Fratelli Vescovi,
Cari Fratelli e Sorelle,

1. Nella gioia della Pasqua faccio mie le parole del Signore Risorto: la pace sia con voi! Il-paci maghkom! Grazie per il caloroso benvenuto, che dimostra che l'ospitalità un tempo riservata all'Apostolo Paolo (cfr At 28, 2) esiste tuttora a Malta. Sono grato per le cordiali parole che a nome di entrambi i rami della Società mi ha rivolto il Superiore Generale, esprimendo tutto il vostro amore per la Chiesa e per il Successore di Pietro.

2. L'isola di Malta è una roccia che affiora dal mare, dove il suolo è spesso sterile e il sole brucia. Persino questo luogo nel quale siamo riuniti si chiama Blata l-Bajda, la "Roccia Bianca". Tuttavia nel corso dei secoli Malta è stata straordinariamente generosa e fertile nei modi più profondi dello Spirito. La fede incrollabile del popolo maltese ha permesso a questa roccia di essere il buon terreno di cui parla il Vangelo. Su questo suolo il Beato Giorgio Preca seminò la Società della Dottrina Cristiana, che in un secolo di vita è fiorita. Diversamente dal fico della narrazione evangelica che abbiamo appena ascoltato (cfr Lc 13, 6-9), avete prodotto frutti in abbondanza, per i quali rendiamo oggi gloria e grazie a Dio.

Non solo Don Giorgio piantò il seme, ma curò anche il germoglio e nutrì il giovane albero cosicché crescesse forte e fecondo come ha fatto.

Siete fioriti perché le vostre radici affondano profondamente in Cristo e perché siete stati ben nutriti dalla vita di santità di Don Giorgio.

Per comprendere meglio la vostra vocazione, consideriamo il fico. Le foglie nuove indicano che l'estate è vicina (cfr Lc 21, 29-31). Nella stagione calda la sua ombra fornisce riparo dal sole. Offre abbondanti e dolci frutti da mangiare e le Scritture dicono che il suo frutto ha proprietà curative (cfr Is 38, 21). Questa è l'immagine a cui siete chiamati ad assomigliare! Come catechisti dovete offrire dolce nutrimento a quanti hanno fame di Dio. Dovete guarire quanti soffrono per la mancanza di luce e di amore.

Se farete questo, sarete veramente il segno della primavera che lo Spirito Santo sta ora preparando per la Chiesa.

3. Ovunque si recasse, Don Giorgio era seguito da una folla di persone, affascinate dalle sue parole. Perché? Perché riconoscevano nella predicazione di Don Giorgio la voce di Gesù stesso. Ascoltavano il Signore stesso. Erano attratte dall'irresistibile fascino di Cristo che sapevano essere l'unico in grado di soddisfare il desiderio più profondo del loro cuore. La bellezza della santità che si trova in sommo grado in Gesù e si riflette nel nuovo Beato di oggi non cesserà mai di attrarre il cuore umano. È certo che se potremo mostrare il volto del Signore risorto al mondo, allora toccheremo e conquisteremo le anime in modo sorprendente!

4. È nelle profondità della contemplazione che scopriamo "la gloria divina che rifulge sul volto di Cristo" (2 Cor 4, 6). Questo è il motivo per cui la vostra regola di vita esige che preghiate spesso e che incontriate regolarmente il vostro direttore spirituale che vi guida e vi accompagna lungo il cammino della vostra fedeltà. Contemplare il volto di Cristo significa essere colmi di energia spirituale per la missione che vi è stata affidata. Come san Paolo, dalla contemplazione siete chiamati a essere missionari: non solo insegnanti, ma testimoni che possono parlare con forza perché possono dire come i primi discepoli: "Abbiamo visto il Signore!" (Gv 20, 25). Fu Papa Paolo VI a scrivere che "l'uomo contemporaneo ascolta più volentieri i testimoni che i maestri o se ascolta i maestri lo fa perché sono testimoni" (Evangelii nuntiandi, n. 41). Questo fu vero per Don Giorgio in modo meraviglioso e deve essere vero anche per voi che siete i suoi figli spirituali.

Nella sua Lettera ai Galati, San Paolo scrive che Dio "si compiacque di rivelare in me suo Figlio, perché lo annunziassi in mezzo ai pagani" (Gal 1, 16). Non parla di Cristo rivelato "a me", ma di Cristo rivelato "in me". Una volta che Gesù si rivela a Saulo sulla via di Damasco e una volta che Paolo apre il suo cuore per ricevere il dono, l’Apostolo stesso diventa la rivelazione. È tanto pieno di Cristo da poter dire nella stessa Lettera: "Non sono più io che vivo, ma Cristo vive in me" (2, 20). Tutta la sua vita, tutto ciò che fa, dice e pensa, il suo corpo, la sua mente, il suo cuore e la sua anima, divengono la rivelazione di Gesù al mondo. Questo è il mistero della vocazione sublime donata non solo a San Paolo e al Beato Giorgio Preca, ma a ognuno di voi.

5. Il vostro fondatore era particolarmente devoto alle parole: Verbum Dei caro factum est, basate sul Prologo del Vangelo di San Giovanni: "Il Verbo si fece carne" (1, 14). In ciò, infatti, risiede il fondamento della vostra vocazione e del vostro apostolato. In un certo senso il Verbo Divino si incarna continuamente nel suo Corpo Mistico, la Chiesa. Dovete aiutarlo in questo facendo per gli altri quanto Don Giorgio ha fatto per voi. Dovete piantare il seme della Parola di Dio nel cuore delle persone affinché Cristo viva in loro!

Dovete insegnare a tutti, bambini, giovani e adulti, a contemplare il volto di Cristo, a vedere il Signore (cfr Novo millennio ineunte, n. 16), cosicché la luce della gloria di Dio, che rifulge sul volto di Gesù, possa risplendere anche sui loro volti. "Questo radicarsi della Chiesa nel tempo e nello spazio riflette il movimento stesso dell'Incarnazione!" (ibidem n. 3).

Mentre continuate questa missione sacra, le parole del vostro Fondatore riecheggino incessantemente nel vostro cuore: MUSEUM - Magister, utinam sequatur Evangelium universus mundus! Maestro, fa' che il mondo intero segua il Vangelo!

Affidandovi all'intercessione della Vergine Maria, di San Paolo e del Beato Giorgio Preca, così come dei Beati Ignazio e Adeodata, anch'essi beatificati oggi, imparto la mia Benedizione Apostolica a tutti i membri della Società della Dottrina Cristiana, quale pegno di infinita misericordia in Gesù Cristo, "il testimone fedele, il primogenito dei morti" (Ap 1,5). Alle 18 il Papa lascia la Chiesa della Madonna della Medaglia Miracolosa e si trasferisce all’aeroporto internazionale di Gudja per il ritorno a Roma, concluso il Pellegrinaggio giubilare sulle orme di S. Paolo Apostolo.

Dopo il saluto del Presidente della Repubblica di Malta, S.E. il Sig. Guido Di Marco, il Santo Padre pronuncia il discorso di commiato che pubblichiamo di seguito:

Mr Prime Minister,
Your Excellencies,
Beloved People of Malta,

1. As the Successor of Peter I must go back to Rome, the See of Peter, and to my duties as Pastor of the Universal Church.

But I shall not forget this visit to the Maltese Islands. Above all I shall not forget the Maltese people. Thank you for being a part of my Jubilee Pilgrimage in the footsteps of Saint Paul! In the"geography of salvation"!

At the end of my first visit, I told you that on my return to Rome I would tell the Apostle Paul that the Maltese were "a good Catholic people". Now, I shall tell your Patron that you are still doing what he wanted: "fighting the good fight of the faith; taking hold of the eternal life to which you were called" (1 Tim 6:12), just as Blessed Dun Gorg, Blessed Ignatius and Blessed Adeodata did. I leave you their example to follow, and I commend you to their intercession.

2. Thank you, Mr President, for your personal kindness during my all too brief visit. My gratitude goes also to the Prime Minister and the Government, to the Armed Forces and the Police Force, and to all who have assisted this pilgrimage in any way. I know that you have done this with sacrifice and love. I thank you from my heart.

My visit has been a moment of intense communion with Archbishop Mercieca, Bishop Cauchi and Bishop Depasquale, and with the priests, religious and lay faithful. To the Churches in Malta and Gozo I say only this: be faithful to Saint Paul, your father in faith on these Islands, remain in steadfast union with Peter and with the Universal Church. In this way you will be ever faithful to Christ.

3. Malta is at the centre of the Mediterranean. You therefore have a unique vocation to be builders of bridges between the peoples of the Mediterranean basin, between Africa and Europe. The future of peace in the world depends on strengthening dialogue and understanding between cultures and religions. Continue in your traditions of hospitality, and continue in your national and international commitment on behalf of freedom, justice and peace.

4. As my Jubilee Pilgrimage comes to an end, I solemnly entrust to Almighty God’s loving protection the peoples of the places I have visited. In the places linked to the Two Thousandth Anniversary of the Saviour’s birth I have hoped and prayed for a great renewal of faith among Christians. I have wished to encourage believers and all people of good will to defend life, to promote respect for the dignity of every human being, to safeguard the family against so many present-day threats, to open their hearts to the world’s poor and exploited, and to work for an international order built on respect for the rule of law and on solidarity with the less fortunate.

This is also the task and the ideal I leave to you, beloved people of Malta.

In the Acts of the Apostles, Saint Luke writes that the Maltese "honoured [Saint Paul and his companions] with many marks of respect, and when [they] sailed they put on board the provisions [they] needed" (Acts 28:10). Spiritually I have had this same experience, and I go away praising God in my heart for all of you.

Amato Popolo di Malta,

1. Come Successore di Pietro devo tornare a Roma, la Sede di Pietro, e ai miei doveri di Pastore della Chiesa Universale.

Tuttavia non dimenticherò questa visita alle Isole Maltesi. Soprattutto non dimenticherò il popolo maltese. Grazie per essere stato parte del mio pellegrinaggio giubilare sulle orme di San Paolo! Nella "geografia della salvezza"!

Alla fine della mia prima visita, vi dissi che una volta tornato a Roma avrei detto a San Paolo che i Maltesi erano "un buon popolo cattolico". Ora, dirò al vostro Patrono che state ancora facendo ciò che voleva: "Combatti la buona battaglia della fede, cerca di raggiungere la vita eterna alla quale sei stato chiamato" (1 Tm 6, 12), proprio come fecero il Beato Don Giorgio, il Beato Ignazio e la Beata Adeodata. Vi lascio il loro esempio da seguire e vi affido alla loro intercessione.

2. Grazie, signor Presidente, per la cortesia che mi ha personalmente riservato durante la mia breve visita. Sono grato anche al Primo Ministro e al Governo, alle Forze Armate e alle Forze di Polizia e a tutti coloro che hanno assistito questo pellegrinaggio in ogni modo. So che lo avete fatto con sacrificio e amore. Grazie di cuore.

La mia visita è stata un momento di comunione intensa con l'Arcivescovo Mercieca, il Vescovo Cauchi, il Vescovo Depasquale e con i sacerdoti, i religiosi e i laici. Alle Chiese a Malta e a Gozo dico solo questo: siate fedeli a San Paolo, vostro padre nella fede su queste Isole, restate saldamente uniti a Pietro e alla Chiesa universale. In tal modo sarete sempre fedeli a Cristo.

3. Malta è al centro del Mediterraneo. Quindi avete la vocazione unica di edificare ponti fra i popoli del bacino del Mediterraneo, fra l'Africa e l'Europa. Il futuro della pace nel mondo dipende dal rafforzamento del dialogo e dalla comprensione fra le culture e le religioni. Continuate la vostra tradizione di ospitalità e proseguite il vostro impegno nazionale e internazionale in nome della libertà, della giustizia e della pace.

4. Al termine del mio pellegrinaggio giubilare, affido solennemente alla protezione amorevole di Dio Onnipotente i popoli e i luoghi che ho visitato. Nei luoghi legati al bimillenario della nascita del Salvatore ho sperato e pregato per un grande rinnovamento di fede fra i cristiani. Ho voluto incoraggiare i credenti e tutte le persone di buona volontà a difendere la vita, a promuovere il rispetto per la dignità di ogni essere umano, a tutelare la famiglia contro le numerose minacce di oggi, ad aprire il loro cuore alle persone povere e sfruttate nel mondo e ad operare per un ordine internazionale basato sul rispetto per il diritto e sulla solidarietà verso i meno fortunati.

Questi sono anche il compito e l'ideale che lascio a voi, amati abitanti di Malta.

Negli Atti degli Apostoli, san Luca scrive che i Maltesi "ci colmarono di onori e al momento della partenza ci rifornirono di tutto il necessario" (At 28, 10). Ho vissuto spiritualmente la stessa esperienza e parto rendendo lode a Dio nel mio cuore per tutti voi.
