Nel momento di lasciare il territorio siriano e nel sorvolare poi il Libano, Cipro e la Grecia, il Papa fa pervenire ai rispettivi Capi di Stato i seguenti messaggi telegrafici:

All’arrivo all’aeroporto internazionale di Gudja a Malta, previsto per le 14 (ora locale e di Roma), il Papa è accolto dal Presidente della Repubblica di Malta, S.E. il Sig. Guido Di Marco, dalle Autorità civili e politiche, dall’Arcivescovo di Malta S.E. Mons. Joseph Mercieca e dagli altri Vescovi dell’Isola.

Pubblichiamo di seguito il discorso che il Santo Padre pronuncia nel corso della cerimonia di benvenuto:

Mr President,
Members of the Government,
Brother Bishops,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. With heartfelt gratitude to God, I stand on Maltese soil for the second time. The Jubilee Pilgrimage which I am making on the Two Thousandth Anniversary of the Birth of Jesus Christ has brought me to Malta. After visiting some of the places especially connected with the history of salvation, at Sinai, in the Holy Land, and now in Athens and Damascus, my pilgrimage in the footsteps of Saint Paul brings me to you.

2. Thank you, Mr President, for the kind invitation which you extended to me in the name of the Maltese people. Thank you for your courteous words of welcome here today. I am grateful also to the distinguished members of Parliament, the Civil and Military Authorities, the members of the Diplomatic Corps, and all who are honouring this occasion with their presence.

With affection in the Lord, I greet Archbishop Mercieca, Bishop Cauchi, and Auxiliary Bishop Depasquale, as well as the other Bishops present, some of whom represent the missionary vocation of the Maltese Church, while others are descendants of Maltese emigrants. I greet the priests, the deacons, the men and women religious; and in particular the young people who are preparing to serve the Lord in the priesthood and consecrated life. I greet the catechists and all who actively collaborate in the Church’s mission.

In the words of your Patron Saint Paul I greet all the Maltese people, without exception: "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 1:2).

3. The memory of my first visit, eleven years ago, spontaneously comes to my mind. I remember my meetings with the priests and religious, the workers, the intellectuals, the families and the young people. I remember the Co-Cathedral of Saint John in Valletta, the Marian Shrines of Mellieha and Ta' Pinu on the Island of Gozo. I remember the Bay and the Islands of Saint Paul, and in particular the ancient Grotto, venerated as the place where he stayed.

I remember above all the faith and the enthusiasm of the Maltese and Gozitans.

Saint Paul arrived in Malta as a prisoner on his way to Rome, the place of his martyrdom. Here he and his shipwrecked companions were treated – as we read in the Acts of the Apostles – "with unusual kindness" (28:2). Here he bore witness to Christ and restored to health the father of Publius and other people of the Island who were sick (cf. Acts 28:8). The goodness of the Maltese people was met by the "the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour" (Tit 3:4). For two millennia you have been faithful to the vocation involved in that singular encounter.

Today the Successor of Peter wishes to confirm you in the same faith, and to encourage you in the spirit of Christian hope and love. He prays that, like your forbears, you too may bear good and abundant fruit. Good trees yield abundant good fruit (cf. Mt 12:33-35), as has been the case of the Venerable Servants of God whom I shall have the joy of declaring Blessed tomorrow.

4. Marked by its position in Europe and in the Mediterranean, Malta is heir to a singularly rich cultural tradition, the heart of which is the humanism of the Gospel. In a world in search of a sure light to guide the transformations which it is undergoing, you have a spiritual and moral heritage perfectly able to heal and elevate the dignity of the human person, to strengthen the fabric of society, and to endow human activity with a deeper sense and meaning (cf. Gaudium et Spes, 40). This is the wisdom and insight which Malta can offer to the new historical era that is slowly but surely emerging.

Dear Maltese Friends, cherish your Christian vocation! Be proud of your religious and cultural heritage! Look to the future with hope, and set out with renewed vigour to make this new Millennium a time of solidarity and peace, of love for life and respect for God’s creation.

5. I have entrusted my pilgrimage to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostle Paul. I invoke their intercession upon all the inhabitants of Malta and Gozo!

I bless you all, and in particular the sick, the elderly and all those who are suffering in body and spirit.

Signore e Signori,

1. Sentitamente grato a Dio, mi trovo in terra maltese per la seconda volta. Il pellegrinaggio giubilare che sto compiendo nel bimillenario della nascita di Gesù Cristo mi ha portato a Malta. Dopo aver visitato alcuni luoghi legati in modo particolare alla storia della salvezza, sul Monte Sinai, in Terra Santa, e ora ad Atene e a Damasco, il mio pellegrinaggio sulle orme di San Paolo mi porta a voi.

2. Grazie, Signor Presidente, per il cortese invito che mi ha indirizzato a nome del popolo maltese. Grazie per le cordiali parole di benvenuto che mi ha rivolto qui oggi. Sono grato anche agli illustri membri del Parlamento, alle autorità civili e militari, ai membri del Corpo Diplomatico e a quanti onorano questa occasione con la loro presenza.

Con affetto nel Signore, saluto l'Arcivescovo Mercieca, il Vescovo Cauchi e il Vescovo Ausiliare Depasquale, così come gli altri Vescovi presenti, alcuni dei quali rappresentano la vocazione missionaria della Chiesa a Malta, mentre altri discendono da emigranti maltesi. Saluto i sacerdoti, i diaconi, i religiosi e le religiose e in particolare i giovani che si preparano a servire il Signore nel sacerdozio e nella vita consacrata. Saluto i catechisti e quanti collaborano attivamente alla missione della Chiesa.

Con le parole del vostro Patrono San Paolo saluto tutto il popolo maltese senza alcuna eccezione: "Grazia a voi e pace da Dio, Padre nostro, e dal Signore Gesù Cristo" (Fil 1, 2).

3. Il ricordo della mia prima visita, undici anni fa, mi torna spontaneo alla mente. Ricordo i miei incontri con i sacerdoti e i religiosi, i lavoratori, gli intellettuali, le famiglie e i giovani. Ricordo la Co-cattedrale di San Giovanni a Valletta, i santuari mariani di Mellieha e Ta' Pinu sull'Isola di Gozo. Ricordo la Baia e le Isole di San Paolo e in particolare l'antico Grotta, venerata come luogo dove egli visse.

Ricordo soprattutto la fede e l'entusiasmo dei Maltesi e degli abitanti dell'Isola di Gozo.

San Paolo arrivò a Malta da prigioniero in viaggio per Roma, il luogo del suo martirio. Qui lui e i suoi compagni che avevano fatto naufragio furono trattati, come leggiamo negli Atti degli Apostoli, con "rara umanità" (28, 2). Qui recò testimonianza di Cristo e guarì il padre di Publio e altre persone dell'isola che erano malate (cfr At 28, 8). La bontà del popolo maltese fu accompagnata dalla "bontà di Dio, salvatore nostro e" dal "suo amore per gli uomini" (Tt 3, 4) Per due millenni siete stati fedeli alla vocazione insita in questo singolare incontro.

Oggi il Successore di Pietro desidera confermarvi nella stessa fede e incoraggiarvi nello spirito della speranza e dell'amore cristiani. Prega affinché, come i vostri predecessori, anche voi rechiate frutti buoni e abbondanti. Gli alberi buoni portano frutti buoni e abbondanti (cfr Mt 12, 33-35), come nel caso dei Venerabili Servi di Dio, che avrò la gioia di dichiarare Beati domani.

4. Caratterizzata dalla sua posizione in Europa e nel bacino del Mediterraneo, Malta è erede di una tradizione culturale ricca e singolare, al centro della quale troviamo l'umanesimo del Vangelo. In un mondo che anela a una luce sicura che orienti le trasformazioni che vive, avete un'eredità spirituale e morale perfettamente in grado di sanare ed elevare la dignità della persona umana, di rafforzare il tessuto sociale e di donare all'attività umana un senso e un significato più profondi (cfr Gaudium et spes, n. 40). Questa è la saggezza e la visione che Malta può offrire alla nuova epoca storica che sta emergendo in modo lento ma sicuro.

Cari amici maltesi, curate la vostra vocazione cristiana! Siate orgogliosi della vostra eredità culturale e religiosa! Guardate al futuro con speranza e impegnatevi con rinnovato vigore per fare di questo nuovo millennio un tempo di solidarietà e di pace, di amore per la vita e di rispetto per ciò che Dio ha creato!

5. Ho affidato il mio pellegrinaggio alla protezione della Beata Vergine Maria e all'Apostolo Paolo. Invoco la loro intercessione su tutti gli abitanti di Malta e di Gozo!

Vi benedico tutti e in particolare i malati, gli anziani e quanti soffrono nel corpo e nello spirito.
