Nel pomeriggio di sabato 25 marzo, il Papa ha incontrato, presso la Delegazione Apostolica di Gerusalemme, i Consoli Generali ai quali ha rivolto le parole di saluto che pubblichiamo di seguito (cfr Bollettino n. 192):

Esteemed Consuls General,

I am happy to have this opportunity to meet you and to encourage you in the mission that you carry out in this unique City and Land. You come from different countries and represent different peoples and political systems, but without exception you are pledged to serving the same great cause: the promotion of peace and understanding among peoples and nations.

In this important sphere, no accomplishment or gain - no matter how small it may seem - will fail to have a positive effect on the entire family of man. I encourage you to bring to your work all the energy of a deeply-felt ideal: that of building a world firmly based on solid foundations of peace, justice and respect for human rights and dignity. May God who is the source of our peace abundantly bless every effort aimed at securing an era of sincere understanding and cooperation among the nations of the earth.

sono lieto di avere questa opportunità di incontrarvi e di incoraggiarvi nella missione che svolgete in questo Paese e in questa Terra unici. Venite da Paesi diversi e rappresentate popoli e sistemi politici differenti, ma siete tutti, senza eccezione, impegnati a servire la stessa grande causa: la promozione della pace e della comprensione tra i popoli e le nazioni.

In questo ambito importante nessun risultato o conquista - per piccoli che possano sembrare - mancheranno di avere effetti positivi sull’intera famiglia umana. Vi incoraggio ad apportare al vostro lavoro tutta l’energia di un ideale profondamente sentito: quello della costruzione di un mondo che poggi saldamente su fondamenta solide di pace, di giustizia e di rispetto dei diritti e della dignità dell’uomo. Possa Dio, che è la sorgente della nostra pace, benedire abbondantemente ogni sforzo profuso per assicurare un’era di sincera comprensione e collaborazione tra le nazioni della terra! Nel corso delle visita compiuta nella mattinata di ieri, domenica 26 marzo 2000 (cfr. Bollettino N. 193) al Gran Mufti Sheikh Akram Sabri, Presidente del Comitato Supremo Islamico, nel suo ufficio sulla spianata della Moschea di Gerusalemme, il Santo Padre ha pronunciato le parole che riportiamo di seguito:

Your Excellency,

Distinguished Muslim authorities,

I wish to express my gratitude to you, in your capacity as Chairman of the Islamic Supreme Committee, for receiving me within the Haram al-Sharif which is connected with the memory of Abraham, who for all believers is a model of faith and submission to Almighty God.

This visit of mine, as you are aware, is essentially a religious and spiritual pilgrimage. Pilgrimage to holy places is a feature common to many religious traditions, especially to the three Abrahamic religions. I thank God revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Jerusalem is the Holy City par excellence. It forms part of the common patrimony of our religions and of the whole of humanity.

May the Almighty grant peace to the whole of this beloved region, so that all the people living in it may enjoy their rights, live in harmony and cooperation, and bear witness to the One God in acts of goodness and human solidarity. Thank you, all!

Distinte Autorità musulmane,

Desidero esprimerle i miei ringraziamenti, nella sua qualità di Presidente del Comitato Supremo Islamico, per avermi accolto nel "Haram al-Sharif" collegato al ricordo di Abramo, che per tutti i credenti è un modello di fede e di sottomissione a Dio Onnipotente.

La mia visita, come ben sapete, è essenzialmente un pellegrinaggio religioso e spirituale. Il pellegrinaggio nei luoghi sacri è una caratteristica comune a molte tradizioni religiose, in particolare alle tre religioni abramitiche. Ringrazio Dio onorato dagli ebrei, dai cristiani e dai musulmani. Gerusalemme è la Città Santa per eccellenza. Essa è parte del patrimonio comune delle nostre religioni e dell’intera umanità.

Possa Dio Onnipotente concedere la pace a tutta questa amata regione, affinché tutti i popoli che la abitano possano godere dei propri diritti, vivere in armonia e collaborazione e rendere testimonianza al Dio Unico attraverso atti di bontà e di solidarietà umana! Grazie a tutti!

Pubblichiamo di seguito la preghiera che ieri, 26 marzo, il Papa ha deposto tra le fenditure del Muro Occidentale (Muro del Pianto) a Gerusalemme, recante il testo pronunciato il 12 marzo in San Pietro, in occasione della Giornata del Perdono, riferita alla confessione delle colpe nei rapporti con Israele:

God of our fathers,

you chose Abraham and his descendants

to bring your Name to the Nations:

we are deeply saddened by the behaviour of those

who in the course of history

have caused these children of yours to suffer,

and asking your forgiveness we wish to commit ourselves

to genuine brotherhood

with the people of the Covenant.

Ieri mattina 26 marzo (cfr. Bollettino N. 193) Giovanni Paolo II si è recato in visita al Patriarca Armeno-Ortodosso S.B. Torkom II Manoukian nella Sede del Patriarcato di Gerusalemme.

Pubblichiamo di seguito le parole che il Santo Padre ha rivolto al Patriarca:

Your Beatitude,

It gives me great pleasure to visit you in your own residence, after having had the joy of meeting you in Rome on the occasion of the memorable visit of His Holiness Karekin the First in December nineteen-ninety-six. I cordially repeat the words I spoke at that time to the Catholicos Patriarch of All Armenians: "May the grace and cordiality of our meeting become like ‘a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts’ (cf. 2 Pet 1:19)".

Our meeting today is yet another step forward which the Lord has granted us for the strengthening of ties between the Catholic Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church. In this Jubilee Year when we pray more intensely that the Lord will grant us the gift of unity, may our friendship be like a prayer rising up to the Father like incense, like the fragrance of the evening sacrifice offered on the Cross by his beloved Son.

Your Beatitude, in visiting your home I feel like a brother in the midst of brothers who together are striving to build up the Church of Christ. I thank you for your gracious welcome, and I ask the Risen Lord to grant to you and to all the clergy and faithful of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Holy Land his gifts of prosperity, joy and peace.

Beatitudine,

è per me un grande piacere visitarla nella sua residenza dopo avere avuto la gioia di incontrarla a Roma in occasione della memorabile visita di Sua Santità Karekin I nel dicembre 1996. Ripeto di cuore le parole che rivolsi allora al Patriarca Catholicos di tutti gli Armeni: "Possano la grazia e la cordialità del nostro incontro diventare come una ‘lampada che brilla in un luogo oscuro, finché non spunti il giorno e la stella del mattino si levi nei vostri cuori’ " (cfr 2 Pt 1,19)".

Il nostro incontro oggi è un ulteriore passo avanti che il Signore ci ha concesso per il rafforzamento dei vincoli tra la Chiesa cattolica e la Chiesa apostolica armena. In questo Anno Giubilare, quando preghiamo più intensamente affinchè il Signore ci conceda il dono dell’unità, possa la nostra amicizia essere come una preghiera che sale a Dio come incenso, come il profumo del sacrificio della sera offerto sulla Croce dal suo Figlio prediletto!

Beatitudine, visitando la sua casa mi sento come un fratello tra fratelli che insieme cercano di costruire la Chiesa di Cristo. La ringrazio per il suo gentile benvenuto e chiedo al Signore Risorto di concedere a lei e a tutto il clero e i fedeli della Chiesa apostolica armena in Terra Santa i suoi doni di prosperità, gioia e pace.
