Pubblichiamo di seguito le variazioni del discorso che il Santo Padre ha pronunciato al Campo Profughi di Dheisheh, ieri pomeriggio 22 marzo (cfr. Bollettino N.182):

Sostituire il saluto iniziale "Dear Friends" con: "Mr President, Dear Palestinian people,".

Paragrafo 3, secondo capoverso, prima riga, dopo la parola "Dear", aggiungere: "brothers and sisters, dear refugees".

Paragrafo 3, alla fine del secondo capoverso aggiungere queste parole: "Probably the pastors and shepherds of Bethlehem were your predecessors, your ancestors".

Nel corso della visita di ieri pomeriggio al Presidente dell’Autorità Palestinese, Sig. Yasser Arafat, al Palazzo Presidenziale di Bethlehem (cfr. Bollettino N.182), il Santo Padre ha rivolto il saluto che riportiamo di seguito:

Your Excellency,

I am happy to have this opportunity to thank you again, and to return the visits which you have made to me in the Vatican. I thank you for your warm welcome. This is an important moment in the search for peace in this region. Much has been achieved, but there is still much to be done if all the peoples of the region are to live in harmony based upon respect for the rights and dignity of all.

Our meeting today makes clear the commitment of the Catholic Church to work unceasingly for peace in the Middle East as a partner of all peoples. The Church understands the aspirations of the different peoples and insists that dialogue is the only way to make those aspirations a reality rather than a dream. I am thankful for the recognition you have given me here today. I know that you too are convinced that only patient and courageous dialogue will open the way to the future which your people rightly desire.

Entrusting this great challenge to Almighty God, I invoke upon you, upon your family and the Palestinian people the abundant blessings of heaven.

Sono lieto di avere l’opportunità di ringraziarla di nuovo e di ricambiare le visite che mi ha fatto in Vaticano. La ringrazio per la sua calorosa accoglienza. Questo è un momento importante nella ricerca della pace in questa regione. Si è ottenuto tanto, ma bisogna ancora fare molto per far sì che tutti i popoli della regione possano vivere in un’armonia basata sul rispetto dei diritti e della dignità di ognuno.

Oggi, il nostro incontro dimostra l’impegno della Chiesa cattolica a operare incessantemente, vicina a tutti i popoli, per la pace in Medio Oriente. La Chiesa comprende le aspirazioni dei diversi popoli e insiste, insiste sul fatto che il dialogo è l’unica via per fare di quelle aspirazioni una realtà piuttosto che un sogno. Le sono grato per il riconoscimento che mi ha conferito oggi. So che anche Lei è convinto che solo il dialogo paziente e coraggioso aprirà la strada al futuro che il suo popolo giustamente desidera.

Affidando questa grande sfida a Dio Onnipotente, invoco su di Lei, sulla sua famiglia e sul popolo palestinese le abbondanti benedizioni del cielo.

In occasione della visita ai due Rabbini Capi d’Israele, il Gran Rabbino askenazita Meir Lau e il Gran Rabbino sefardita Mordechai Bakshi-Doron, compiuta questa mattina a Gerusalemme (cfr. Bollettino 184) Giovanni Paolo II ha rivolto loro il saluto che pubblichiamo di seguito:

Very Reverend Chief Rabbis,

It is with deep respect that I visit you here today and thank you for receiving me at Hechal Shlomo. Truly this is a uniquely significant meeting which - I hope and pray - will lead to increasing contacts between Christians and Jews, aimed at achieving an ever deeper understanding of the historical and theological relationship between our respective religious heritages.

Personally, I have always wanted to be counted among those who work, on both sides, to overcome old prejudices and to secure ever wider and fuller recognition of the spiritual patrimony shared by Jews and Christians. I repeat what I said on the occasion of my visit to the Jewish Community in Rome, that we Christians recognize that the Jewish religious heritage is intrinsic to our own faith: "you are our elder brothers" (cf. Address at the Synagogue of Rome, 13 April 1986, 4). We hope that the Jewish people will acknowledge that the Church utterly condemns anti-Semitism and every form of racism as being altogether opposed to the principles of Christianity. We must work together to build a future in which there will be no more anti-Judaism among Christians or anti-Christian sentiment among Jews.

There is much that we have in common. There is so much that we can do together for peace, for justice, for a more human and fraternal world. May the Lord of heaven and earth lead us to a new and fruitful era of mutual respect and cooperation, for the benefit of all! Thank you.

Molto reverendi Rabbini Capi,

È con grande rispetto che vi faccio visita qui oggi e vi ringrazio per avermi ricevuto a Hechal Shlomo. Questo incontro ha un significato veramente unico, che - spero e prego - condurrà a maggiori contatti fra Cristiani ed Ebrei, volti a raggiungere una comprensione sempre più profonda del rapporto storico e teologico fra le nostre rispettive eredità religiose.

Personalmente, ho sempre desiderato essere annoverato fra coloro che, da entrambe le parti, operano per superare i pregiudizi e per garantire un riconoscimento sempre più ampio e pieno del patrimonio spirituale condiviso dagli Ebrei e dai Cristiani. Ripeto ciò che ho detto in occasione della mia visita alla comunità ebraica di Roma, ossia che noi Cristiani riconosciamo che l'eredità religiosa ebraica è intrinseca alla nostra fede: "siete i nostri fratelli maggiori" (cfr. Incontro con la Comunità ebraica della città di Roma, 13 aprile 1986, n. 4). Speriamo che il popolo ebraico riconosca che la Chiesa condanna totalmente l'antisemitismo e ogni forma di razzismo perché in radicale contrasto con i principi del cristianesimo. Dobbiamo cooperare per edificare un futuro nel quale non vi sia più antigiudaismo fra i Cristiani e anticristianesimo fra gli Ebrei.

Abbiamo molto in comune. Insieme possiamo fare molto per la pace, per la giustizia e per un mondo più fraterno e umano. Che il Signore del cielo e della terra ci conduca a un'era nuova e feconda di rispetto reciproco e di cooperazione, a beneficio di tutti! Grazie.

Members of the Knesset,

Your Excellencies,

I am most grateful, Mr President, for the welcome you have given me to Israel. To this meeting we both bring long histories. You represent Jewish memory, reaching beyond the recent history of this land to your peoples unique journey through the centuries and millennia. I come as one whose Christian memory reaches back through the two thousand years since the birth of Jesus in this very Land.

History, as the ancients held, is the Magistra vitae, a teacher of how to live. This is why we must be determined to heal the wounds of the past, so that they may never be opened again. We must work for a new era of reconciliation and peace between Jews and Christians. My visit is a pledge that the Catholic Church will do everything possible to ensure that this is not just a dream but a reality.

We know that real peace in the Middle East will come only as a result of mutual understanding and respect between all the peoples of the region: Jews, Christians and Muslims. In this perspective, my pilgrimage is a journey of hope: the hope that the twenty-first century will lead to a new solidarity among the peoples of the world, in the conviction that development, justice and peace will not be attained unless they are attained for all.

Building a brighter future for the human family is a task which concerns us all. That is why I am pleased to greet you, Government Ministers, members of the Knesset and Diplomatic Representatives of many countries, who must make and implement decisions which affect the lives of people. It is my fervent hope that a genuine desire for peace will inspire your every decision. With that as my prayer, I invoke abundant divine blessings upon you, Mr President, upon your country, and upon all of you who have honoured me with your presence. Thank you.

Le sono molto grato, signor Presidente, per l'accoglienza che mi ha riservato in Israele. Entrambi portiamo in questo incontro lunghe storie. Lei rappresenta la memoria ebraica che va oltre la storia recente di questa terra fino al viaggio unico del suo popolo attraverso i secoli e i millenni. Vengo come una persona la cui memoria cristiana risale a duemila anni fa, alla nascita di Gesù in questa stessa terra.

La storia, come dicevano gli antichi, è Magistra vitae, maestra di vita. È per questo che dobbiamo essere decisi a guarire le ferite del passato affinché non si riaprano più. Dobbiamo operare per una nuova era di riconciliazione e di pace fra gli Ebrei e i Cristiani. La mia visita costituisce il pegno che la Chiesa cattolica farà tutto il possibile per garantire che questo non sia solo un sogno, ma una realtà.

Sappiamo che la vera pace in Medio Oriente sarà solo il frutto della comprensione reciproca e del rispetto fra tutti i popoli della regione: Ebrei, Cristiani, Musulmani. In questa prospettiva, il mio pellegrinaggio è un viaggio della speranza: la speranza che il XXI secolo porti una nuova solidarietà fra i popoli del mondo, nella convinzione che lo sviluppo, la giustizia e la pace non si ottengono se non per tutti.

Edificare un futuro più luminoso per la famiglia umana è un compito che ci riguarda tutti. È per questo che sono lieto di salutarvi, Ministri del Governo, membri della Knesset e Rappresentanti Diplomatici di molti Paesi, che dovete prendere e attuare decisioni che influiranno sulla vita dei popoli. È mia fervida speranza che un autentico desiderio di pace ispiri tutte le vostre decisioni. Con questa mia preghiera, invoco abbondanti benedizioni divine su di Lei, Presidente, sul suo Paese e su tutti voi che mi avete onorato della vostra presenza. Grazie.
