All’inizio della visita a Wadi Al-Kharrar, nella Valle del Giordano, compiuta nel pomeriggio di martedì 21 marzo (cfr. Bollettino n. 177), il Papa, prima della preghiera, ha pronunciato le parole che pubblichiamo di seguito:

I want to greet all of you for having gathered for this brief prayer. In particular, I pray for His Majesty the King and I thank him again for the welcome I have received in Jordan.

Pubblichiamo di seguito le parole di Giovanni Paolo II che ha pronunciato prima della benedizione finale:

I wish to thank everyone who has taken part and all who helped in the organization.

A special word of thanks goes to the Patriarchs and Bishops, the priests, the Sisters. It has been a moving experience to celebrate with the Catholic Community of Jordan.

And I cordially greet the representatives of other communities who have come from many other parts of the Middle East. I am grateful to you all.

I feel especially close to the children and young people. Know that the Church and the Pope put great trust in you!

Special greetings to His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed.

I will keep all the people of Jordan - Christinas and Muslims - in my prayers, especially the sick and the elderly.

With gratitude I invoke abundant blessings upon His Highness the King and upon the whole nation.

Desidero ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno partecipato e tutti coloro che hanno aiutato nell’organizzazione.

Un particolare ringraziamento va ai Patriarchi, ai Vescovi, ai sacerdoti e alle religiose. Celebrare con la comunità cattolica in Giordania è stata un’esperienza commovente.

Nel corso della visita di questa mattina nella località di Al-Maghtas, nella Valle del Giordano, vicino Gerico (cfr. Bollettino N. 180), il Santo Padre ha rivolto ai presenti le seguenti parole di saluto:

Your Excellency,

Dear Friends,

I am grateful for this chance to visit a place so steeped in history. For many thousands of years, this area around Jericho has been a human habitat. It is near here that we find the remains of the oldest city yet discovered. But its memory becomes still richer when we turn to Holy Scripture, which shows Jericho as a place which bears the footprint not only of man but of God himself.

In my mind I see Jesus coming to the waters of the River Jordan not far from here to be baptized by John the Baptist (cf. Mt 3:13); I see Jesus passing on his way to the Holy City where he would die and rise again; I see him opening the eyes of the blind man as he passes by (cf. Lk 18:35-43).

Today Jericho has become a flourishing oasis in the desert. May the city which is so rich in memory also be rich in promise. May its progress announce the hope of the more peaceful future which the inhabitants of this place and all the peoples of this Land have desired for so long.

Cari Amici,

Sono grato per questa opportunità di visitare un luogo tanto permeato di storia. Per migliaia di anni, quest’area intorno a Gerico è stata un habitat umano. Qui vicino troviamo le vestigia della città più antica del mondo. Tuttavia, la sua memoria diviene ancora più ricca se ci riferiamo alle Sacre Scritture che descrivono Gerico come luogo che reca l’impronta non solo dell’uomo, ma di Dio stesso.

Con gli occhi dell’animo vedo Gesù avvicinarsi alle acque del fiume Giordano, non lontano da qui, per essere battezzato da Giovanni il Battista (cfr Mt 3,13); vedo Gesù andare verso la Città Santa dove morirà e resusciterà; lo vedo aprire gli occhi del cieco lungo la strada (cfr Lc 18, 35-43).

Oggi Gerico è divenuta una florida oasi nel deserto. Che questa città tanto ricca di memoria sia anche ricca di promesse! Che il suo sviluppo annunci la speranza di quel futuro più pacifico che gli abitanti di questo luogo e tutti i popoli di questa Terra desiderano da così lungo tempo!

Dio vi benedica tutti!
