Alla fine del primo paragrafo (prima della frase: I have already...), del discorso pronunciato al Suo arrivo ieri lunedì 20 marzo all’aeroporto internazionale "Queen Alia" di Amman (cfr. Bollettino N.176), Giovanni Paolo II ha aggiunto le seguenti parole:

My spirit first turns to Ur of the Chaldeans where Abraham’s journey faith began.

[Il mio spirito si rivolge in primo luogo ad Ur dei Caldei, dove è iniziato il cammino di fede di Abramo.]

Al termine della sua visita all’antico monastero sul Monte Nebo compiuta nel pomeriggio di ieri lunedì 20 marzo (cfr. Bollettino N. 176), il Santo Padre ha pronunciato le parole che seguono:

Father Minister General,

Dear Friends,

Here on the heights of Mount Nebo I begin this stage of my Jubilee Pilgrimage. I think of the great figure of Moses and the new Covenant which God made with him on Mount Sinai. I give thanks to God for the ineffable gift of Jesus Christ, who sealed the Covenant with his blood and brought the Law to fulfilment. To him who is "he Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end" (Rev 22:13), to him I dedicate every step of this journey which I make through the Land which was his.

On this first day, I am especially happy to greet you, Father Minister General, and to pay tribute to the magnificent witness given in this Land by the sons of Saint Francis through the Custody’s faithful service in the holy places down the centuries.

I am also pleased to greet the Governor of Madaba and the Mayor of the city. May the blessings of the Almighty be upon the people of the area! And may the peace of heaven fill the hearts of all who join me on my pilgrim path!

Padre Ministro Generale,

Cari amici,

qui, sulle alture del Monte Nebo, comincio questa fase del mio pellegrinaggio giubilare. Penso alla grande figura di Mosè e all’Alleanza che Dio strinse con lui sul Monte Sinai. Rendo grazie a Dio per il dono ineffabile di Gesù Cristo, che suggellò la nuova Alleanza con il proprio sangue e portò la Legge a compimento. A Lui che è "L’Alfa e l’Omega, il primo e l’ultimo, l’inizio e la fine" (Ap. 22,13), dedico ogni passo di questo viaggio nella terra che fu Sua.

In questo primo giorno, sono particolarmente lieto di salutare lei, Padre Ministro Generale, e di rendere onore alla testimonianza magnifica offerta nel corso dei secoli a questa terra dai figli di san Francesco mediante il servizio fedele della Custodia nei luoghi santi.

Sono anche lieto di salutare il Governatore di Madaba e il Sindaco della città. Che le benedizioni dell’Onnipotente ricadano sugli abitanti di questa zona! Che la pace dei cieli riempia il cuore di quanti si uniscono a me lungo il mio cammino di pellegrino!
