PRESS RELEASE
New horizons for theology?
In Rome, the 13th PATH International Forum relaunches religious thought in a time of global crisis
A theology capable of dialoguing with artificial intelligence, questioning science, inspiring legality, and generating concrete solidarity. This is the challenge launched by the International Forum of the Pontifical Academy of Theology (PATH), entitled “Ad theologiam promovendam: an epistemic revolution? New horizons for religious thought”, to be held on 6 and 7 March 2026 in Rome at Palazzo Maffei Marescotti in Via della Pigna 13A.
Now in its thirteenth edition, the Forum is part of the renewal process desired by Pope Francis with the Apostolic Letter Ad theologiam promovendam, which redefined the mission and statutes of the PATH, and finds new impetus in the words addressed to the Academy by Pope Leo XIV during the Audience of 13 September 2025: a theology based on the encounter with Christ, open to dialogue with philosophy, science, economics, law, art and digital culture.
The proceedings will be opened by the President of the PATH, His Excellency Bishop Antonio Staglianò, with a reflection on the possible “epistemic revolution” in theology. The protagonists of the first day will be Massimo Naro, who will propose a reinterpretation of theology as scientia sui generis, capable of engaging with contemporary scientific knowledge; Teodora Rossi, with a proposal for the refoundation of moral theology in the postmodern horizon; Francesca Cocchini, who will return to the patristic roots of wisdom theology; and Jean Ehret, with a contemporary model inspired by Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Rosmini.
On the morning of Saturday 7 March, the initiative will continue with a round table discussion entitled “From Faith to Fraternity: Theology as the Matrix of a Culture of Solidarity”. The discussion will intertwine art, legality, politics, pastoral care, the environment, and institutions. Speakers will include Debora Diego (Vatican Museums), Nicolò Mannino (International Parliament of Legality), Antonio Manzo (journalist), Giovanni Mazzillo (theologian), Andrea Pagliaro (Colonel in the Carabinieri), Antonio Pompili (PATH Solidarity Coordinator) and Carlo Simeone (Secretary of the PATH Council of Higher Studies).
“Authentic theology is at once scientific, wise and supportive; it dialogues with the sciences, questions artificial intelligence, promotes and safeguards human dignity, and generates fraternity. Today, more than ever, it is called to be responsible for the future of humanity”, says PATH President Bishop Antonio Staglianò.
The proceedings will be open to the public and broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of the Pontifical Academy of Theology.
