The Lenten “Statio” in Saint Peter’s Basilica with display of the Lance of Longinus

Followed by the Eucharistic Celebration at the Altar of the Cathedra of Saint Peter, presided over by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican

VATICAN, 14 MAR – Tomorrow, Saturday 15 March, at 18.00, the Lenten “Statio” will be held in Saint Peter’s Basilica.

It is a rite of the ancient Roman tradition, by which the faithful and pilgrims, every day for forty days, gather and pause in one of Rome’s churches that preserves the memories of the martyrs. The litanies of the saints are recited, with a short procession, and the Eucharist is celebrated.

On the Saturday preceding the second Sunday of Lent, the “Statio” takes place in Saint Peter’s Papal Basilica. Here, from 18.00, the procession will be accompanied by the litanies of the saints to the Loggia of Veronica where the relic of the Lance of Longinus, with which the Roman centurion pierced the side of Christ, will be displayed.

This will be followed by the Eucharistic Celebration at the Altar of the Cathedra celebrated by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, with the presence of the canons of the Basilica, the priests who wish to concelebrate, and God’s holy people.
